The reluctance to bail out GM and the other Detroit automakers has everything to do with the UAW, as if the impending collapse is the fault of the workers at the bottom of the heap. The "free market" types want to use the current auto industry crisis to force a "restructuring" of the companies' "relationships" principally with the UAW. We hear a chorus about "bloated UAW contracts", contract terms that "GM can't live with," or references to "overpaid" autoworkers, etc. Never mind that just one year ago UAW autoworkers agreed to huge concessions in what President Ron Gettelfinger describes as a "transformative agreement" (for which, in the Detroit media, he was heralded "man of the year."). That agreement, according to Gettelfinger, was designed to make the UAW labor force cheaper than their non-union brethren at Honda, Toyota, etc. This from a once proud union which set the industry standard.

u can come her andy!

this does not sound good:

New Jersey's Lisa Jackson set to get EPA nod from Obama

...Jackson's tenure has been marked in large part by a stream of pro-development policies and proposals that environmentalists say undermine longstanding protections.

These include plans to replace state inspectors with "licensed site inspectors" hired by developers; cutbacks in proposed clean stream and soil rules and delays on new measures to reduce greenhouse gases.

Critics say the DEP under Jackson also delayed in releasing a critical report linking chromium waste sites in rapidly developing areas of Hudson County to lung cancer.

But most of those decisions, Tittel said, came not from Jackson but from her boss, Gov. Jon Corzine.

Many of Jackson's proposals, such as a plan to protect 900 miles of the state's cleanest streams were scaled back once they reached the governor's office, he said. Others were tabled once they got there, he said, citing a DEP proposal requiring the Oystre Creek nuclear power plant install cooling towers.

"It is clear that this governor has her hands tied on a lot of important issues,'' Tittel said.

But others contend that Jackson must take credit for changes during her tenure.

Jeff Ruch, executive director of the non-profit Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, said Jackson is a non-starter for the EPA job because she espoused many policies that Obama himself cmapaigned against.

Ruch's group says that Jackson's DEP endanagered public health by its failure to adequatelyt respond to crises such as the discovery of mercury contamination in daycare students housed at the site of a former thermometer factory on the state's contaminated site list....
