Busted

Filed under: Whatever — pjsauter @ 7:35 am

I don’t know if it’s a guy thing or not, but I’ve never given a crap about weddings. I didn’t care when Luci Bird married whoever the hell it was she married, or when Tricia married that Cox guy, or when Diana married Prince Jughead or even when Jen married Brad. If I hear that somebody I actually know is getting married (though, at this phase of my life, people I know are a lot more likely to die than get married), my first thought is usually, “oh Christ, I hope they don’t invite me” (my second thought, of course, is “I hope they have an open bar at the reception”). So it should come as no surprise that I really don’t give a flying frack about Chelsea Clinton getting married today.

I don’t care where it’s gonna be, or how much it’s gonna cost, or who’ll be attending. I don’t need to see “live shots” of “downtown” Rhinebeck or footage from helicopters flying over the site.

Now, don’t get me wrong, by all accounts she turned out to be a very good, smart person in spite of her rather odd family and childhood and being publicly called names by ignorant, venomous blowhards like Rush Limbaugh. So good for her and all, but geez, to waste all this time and money reporting on her “secret” wedding in Rhinebeck today is just plain nuts. Can’t they just leave this kid alone?

No, I guess not.

Is “busted” now an acceptable news term? As in “BP’s busted well in the Gulf.” ‘Cuz I’ve heard them refer to it that way several times now, and it just sounds odd (and if you do a google search for ‘busted well’ you’ll get a plethora of hits from all sorts of news sources). I mean, I never heard them say that “the driver of the Toyota Prius lost control of the vehicle when his accelerator busted” or “building has begun on a memorial at the site of the busted World Trade Center” or “New Orleans flooded when the levees busted.”

Just don’t seem like high-class English to me.

  1. English suffers constant changes and the changes can seem rather grating to old fogies like me. I still have difficulty with babysit which was always babysit for Johnny and now is babysit Johnny. Or he peed in his pants which is now he peed his pants (which strikes me as kind of painful). Basically, an intransitive verb has become a transitive one that takes a direct object. But the opposite happens too. One used to be able to change a lightbulb, now I hear one changes out a lightbulb. Now a transitive verb has become intransitive, and I and a couple of other fuddiduddies are left muttering.

When I was a kid my friend’s mom was very upset by the new connotation of the word terrific. She, with justification, insisted the word referred to something terrifying so how could we say the show was terrific and mean it was great? It bothered her for years.

Then there is try and change or try and do, which should be try to change, etc, because try plus the infinitive is the way to show purpose and result.

But, I guess as long as we understand each other, we’ll all survive, busted wells, peed pants, terrific times and all.

  2. “Graduated high school” bugs me. It should be graduated from high school. Otherwise, I don’t know what graduated cylinder means.

But it’s not that “busted” isn’t a word I’d use myself. I just thought there were certain standards for these things on the teevee news (clearly, it would be about the only standard in effect these days).

Otherwise, what the hell. Might as well say BP’s f*cked-up hole in the seabed.

  3. When I was a kid (child, not goat), there weren’t no such word as “ain’t” and it was “burst”, not “bust” but that was one of my earliest favorite songs that I may never have heard if Harlan had written it and Johnny and Ray sang it as “I’m Bursted”. Besides, what we thought of as a “bust” is now a “rack”. Not Iraq which is also something of a bust.

    :boobs:

Don’t get get me started on “and such”. Oh, never mind. I’m busting out of here.

Speaking of the meaning of “is” here’s a little tune for Chelsea and Bill and Hill’ry and the PM of Australia and Seanie.

  6. Yeah, I saw that. Pretty funny. But at least he still considers himself an Orangeman!

  7. Maybe he should have played MLB.

    Wearing the Orange

The commissioner’s office does not take kindly to fashion scofflaws, and Brian Wilson’s wallet is $1,000 lighter as a result. That was Wilson’s fine for wearing all-orange shoes when he saved Tuesday night’s 6-4 victory against Florida.

btw, my Dad will be moving to his new home for dementia next Friday. Hopefully he will be back in the district of jErik Cantor so I can call him on election day to vote the jErik out.

  8. I accidentally turned on my TV to CBS this morning about the time I was reading another great pj eye opener and the first thing I saw was Doris K. Goodwin (footnotes are your friends) wearing some very canary yellow frock when everything in her background was the same colour. She was talking about…the wedding but I did not hear if she said anything about ’something borrowed’. Speaking of plagiarism and Boston water, I guess her fellow Borrowstonian and Imus friend Mike Borrownicle no longer does Don’s show since he seems to have stuck at Morning :jerk: but I haven’t seen or heard Imus since he went to the Barnyard channel. I wonder if DKG still appears.

I left the station on for a while until the Bill/Hill’ry/Chelsea b-roll got too repetitious but long enough to see that the other story they were covering besides “A Chelsea Morning” was something about Lindsay Lohan and whether or not she could be rehabilitated now that she is about to released after serving less than 2 weeks of a 3 month sentence. We don’t have enough money or prison space here in Cali anymore to incarcerate spoiled brats with disrespectful manicures.
