Saturday Open Thread

OK, I think what we all need to do here is pick a buddy, so that if your buddy mysteriously disappears in the middle of the night, we’ll all know that the bushies declared them to be subversives, and took them away.  I’m not exactly sure what to do after that, though.  I mean, it aint like you can report it to the police.  But at least we’ll know.

Before they come for you, you might want to check out Marc at Giggles in Seattle (where “Tickets Still Available” – of which I have two copies, because, even though I ordered “Not Sold Out,” somebody shipped me two of the same thing – was recorded) tonight, though.  I mean, what better way to get through those waterboarding sessions than to laugh while recallign a few choice Maron bits?

Be careful out there – it’s a brave new world.

  21. the bagel store bagels have a thicker dough and they’re baked differently. I don’t remember the process. But they don’t ship well, which is why Lenders makes them the way they do, they found a recipe that travels better

  27. actually I don’t know if grandpa kept a kosher butcher shop. I don’t think so. That’s the funny part of it. My told me some funny stories of how they were kosher except when they were really hungry he’d bring home meat.

  31. A definition of terms, then. A bagel is a round bread made of simple, elegant ingredients: high-gluten flour, salt, water, yeast and malt. Its dough is boiled, then baked, and the result should be a rich caramel color; it should not be pale and blond. A bagel should weigh four ounces or less and should make a slight cracking sound when you bite into it instead of a whoosh. A bagel should be eaten warm and, ideally, should be no more than four or five hours old when consumed.

    All else is not a bagel.

It’s funny, because when I first moved to Portland and was working in the Pioneer Courthouse, there was a similar outfit right across the street, called Dave’s — “Jewish soul food,” my boss called its fare — and sure enough, there was the mother-in-law behind the register as you paid your bill and picked up your tray.

    Dave’s is worthy of another post all its own, but what got me thinking about Hobby’s this morning is this story. Like my mom, Sam is now retired. But his sons still run the deli, and they’re sending free salami over to the soldiers in Iraq. I’m sure it will taste great to the fighters in the desert, but if they start to think about those monster sandwiches that you can get at Hobby’s, they, like me, are going to be homesick.

  38. I’m a New Yorker. Is there anywhere in Portland to find a Coney Island style Brooklyn, NY knishe?

    Which, of course, brings up my own NYC food cravings (and the substitutes I’ve found here, where possible):

    * Matzoh ball soup: Mother’s has a nice one, with decent matzoh balls (although mine are better, she says not so modestly…)
    * Chopped liver. Mother’s chopped liver will do – but serving it up on that soft bread? The travesty!
    * Deli sandwiches – Rose’s, I suppose. If I must. But I’m sorry I never got to experience Dave’s Deli.
    * Bagels? Don’t get me started, grr…

    Nick? PDXFoodDude? Anyone?

  47. I have heard of Yonah’s.

    I’ll bet that many large US cities have “good knishes”. Cleveland? I read somewhere that Cleveland had a large Jewish population. Portland was, until recently, a medium sized town. It had a relatively small Jewish immigrant population–especially when compared to NYC and Cleveland. I have a friend from SF who is Jewish. His family settled in SF in 1844. He is a poet. Knew Jack Kerouac. I cannot remember his name.

    The history of Jewish life in Cleveland, Ohio, began, not in Cleveland, but in the small town of Unsleben, Bavaria, on May 5, 1839. On that day, a group of 19 emigrants led by Moses Alsbacher departed for America, seeking escape from political unrest and economic and personal discrimination. They chose Cleveland as their final destination because a fellow townsman, Simson Thorman, had two years earlier made this thriving village on Lake Erie the base for his fur trading business. Arriving in late 1839, they found their first homes in the Terminal Tower-Central Market area.

    A Torah scroll was among the belongings of this group of settlers, and soon after they arrived, they formed the Israelitic Society for worship. By 1850, the society had split permanently into two congregations, Anshe Chesed, today Fairmount Temple, and Tifereth Israel, now The Temple. Over the next 20 years, both congregations gradually adopted the Reform mode of worship under the leadership of Rabbi Isadore Kalisch, Cleveland’s first rabbi.

  64. The slender brown-and-yellow Butler’s garter snake is a mild-mannered creature that spends its time sheltering in burrows and eating earthworms. But it has sparked a heated dispute between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and state legislators.

    State Sen. Glenn Grothman wants to see the snake removed from the state’s register of threatened species, because, he says, the snakes are plentiful and their protected status has cramped economic development and community projects such as a high school sports field and an aquatic complex in Milwaukee suburbs.

    If the Department of Natural Resources does not significantly reduce the amoun of protected snake habitat and set in motion the garter snake’s removal from the list by the end of the month, a joint legislative committee that reviews administrative rules will, legislators have said, invoke a law to suspend the protected status.

    Department of Natural Resources officials and conservationists say that would be nationally unprecedented and could set the stage for attacks on state protected-species listings nationwide.

  67. Toll wrote that Portland’s community was very small when compared with those of Cleveland and other places. I read that Cleveland is home to over 80,000 Jews. (SF has 70,000.) Quality. Portland has quality over quantity.

  68. #64: Tough choices sometimes with these protected species. I tend to take the side of the plant or the animal but that’s just me. I realize people are more “pragmatic” sometimes. I can’t see a way out of it though if the population of the snakes has risen sufficiently to take it off that list

  88. and strangeHouse Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of inappropriate “contact” between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he then told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). Boehner later contacted The Post and said he could not remember whether he talked to Hastert.

    Among the Republican explanations during the night:

    _Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., chairman of the Page Board that oversees the congressional work-study program for high schoolers, said he did investigate but Foley falsely assured him he was only mentoring the boy. Pages are high school students who attend classes under congressional supervision and work as messengers.

    _The spokesman for Speaker Dennis Hastert, Ron Bonjean, said the top House Republican had not known about the allegations. Shimkus said he learned about them in late 2005.

    Just don’t do it from here, or mention here. For one thing, it’s very doubtful it had anything to do with the sites you found yourself at. More likely some sort of a hosts file trick, or other browser-realted nasty (possibly even brought forth by analyzing files on your computer (like browser cache or cookies/history, that sort of thing). Usually they’ll either hijack your search results, or pop up a window related to your browsing, but I’m not up on all that’s out there theses days (when I was supporting computers, it was invariably a result of porn surfing or downloading malicious but “cute” little flash movies or the like). If rebooting cleared it up, then consider yourself fortunate, and get yourself some spyware protection.

    And on the odd chance that it was a result of the sites you went to, stay away. Imagine what fun somebody who actually knows what they’re doing could have with you.

Good morning seditionistas…..I use the AOL Im buddy list to check on my peeps….My Mom uses it for me and my sister…as in, when I get up and turn on the computer she knows Im up etc….if she doesnt see me on she worries. I hardly use those things to chat but I do sometimes….they are just handy to keep track of people….
    So you want me to add you to my watch list just IM me at luckymessmcb on aolIM….or Melina Brown on Yahoo IM….and Ill add you and keep an eye on you too….
    But I suppose Id have to have emergency nmbers and stuff so if you didnt show up for a few days I’d know who to call…besides that I have access to some pretty hot east coast lawyers who like the limelight…I dont know if they do the guantanamo deal.

    NYC has the best bagles b/c of the water. This was the first stop for so many jews and I think that the early immigrant new world culture perfected official bagles in NYC, which has the best water anyway, so you cant really bake em (they boil and then bake) anywhere else and have them taste the same without the water from here…..
    My father is on the west coast (ojai and Pacific palisades) and has been all through this and finally, after baking and searching for his whole life has finally admitted that you have to come to NYC to get the real thing…..so, Nick…come on!! We’re waiting for you…airfares are cheap as hell and you can stay with Suz!!

  95. Gonzales Cautions Judges on Interfering

    Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who is defending President Bush’s anti-terrorism tactics in multiple court battles, said Friday that federal judges should not substitute their personal views for the president’s judgments in wartime.

    He said the Constitution makes the president commander in chief and the Supreme Court has long recognized the president’s pre-eminent role in foreign affairs. “The Constitution, by contrast, provides the courts with relatively few tools to superintend military and foreign policy decisions, especially during wartime,” the attorney general told a conference on the judiciary at Georgetown University Law Center.

    “Judges must resist the temptation to supplement those tools based on their own personal views about the wisdom of the policies under review,” Gonzales said.

    And he said the independence of federal judges, who are appointed for life, “has never meant, and should never mean, that judges or their decisions should be immune” from public criticism.

EEEKKK- Nicki, go to your add/remove programs in the control panel and see if anything has been added to you computer…and go to Kim Komando and check her downloads for free spyware and virus protection. If you surf alot you will get hijacked like that…it happens on my desktop all the time from my son going to the game cheat and flash movie pages….you need to run a spyware remover every time you turn the computer off or on.

    I was researching last night and I keep coming back to this problem with human nature. Knowing that it doesnt work and that the information gained cant be trusted so much of the time, what is in it for these sick guys?…and what of the prisoners at Guantanamo who have had all of their papers, letters, pictures, and attorney/client materials removed by guards because of the suicide thing that happened…..what of them ever seeing any sort of due process?
    How can the American people go along with this…..I dont think that they can possibly understnadthat its not some remote thing happening to those bad guys over there…its us and our neighbors….and there is no recourse. The Times yesterday just said that the lawyers are bitter…..huh? Well, there is nothing else for defense lawyers to do but wring their hands and become bitter.

Well, the best thing that could happen would be for a few of the high-profile, pro-torture pundits to be picked up off the street and thrown into a cage somewhere w/o being accused of anything, charged with anything, or being allowed contact with anybody on the outside. The problem is that the 80%’ers think it’s just bad people that this happens to, and that they deserve what they get. The don’t get the mesage (nor will they believe it if they do) that this is happening to all sorts of people who are either just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or are unfortunate to have had somebody “report” them or otherwise get on a list somewhere.

    What doesn’t get stressed enough is the basic lack of fairness in not even being able to know what you’ve been imprisoned for, and given a chance to plead your case. It’s evil, it’s un-American, and it shouldn’t be allowed to happen. Period. I honestly don’t know how any sane, reasonable person can not grasp that.

  103. I really doubt that the Reich have much of an ability to actually pick up and detain any large number of people at any given time.. The FBI has been really decimated during the Bush admin. I would think that the Reich might pick up some big mouth lefty talker .. Shultz’s disappearance or Frankens disappearance might attract some attention but the Reich’s media would just say they got canceled because of lack of interest . On the other hand if Olbermann was disappeared that would probably attract more interest but only until the drug stores got sufficient shipments of Prozac. :eek: :yuck::rant1:

Suppose you’re a vocal opponent of the administration, and you write lots of letters to the editor, and you organize and speak at rallies, and you maybe get enough credibility to go beyone being some harmless, random nut, and start to become a “problem.” So one night you disappear. Maybe nobody sees, or maybe they make a big noisy show of hauling you away, but, either way, you’re never seen or heard from again.

    You think that would have an affect on the next person who thinks about standing up and being heard?

    It’s just like the NSA spying stuff. Sure, they can’t process (yet) every phone call and e-mail that passes through their secret closet at ATT, but they can damn sure decide to start looking into what you’ve been up to, if they have a mind to.

  108. In the Denver area in 2003 just before the Iraq invasion the FBI picked up and questioned probably five to ten leaders of the local UPJ groups. The police also fired rubber bullets and teargas at one demonstration. What was seen as an inappropriate police response resulted in the UPJ groups sponsoring training sessions in the same kind of police containment and isolation techniques that protesters learned in the 1970’s.

    If people are disappeared it will probably create more animosity than fear.

    You might find the state and local authorities asking to FBI in a not very nice way to please leave.:yuck:

    And really Fred, not to become as indignant as you and some other often do about some issues here, but if youre speaking from a position of knowledge…as in, you know about clinical depression and anxiety and have spent alot of your life doing research and feeling horrible pain….then Ill discuss this with you…but if you are just going on about big pharma for whatever political reasons, give me a break….youre cutting off your nose to spite your face and youre treading into dangerous territory.
    Just because they need to be re-regulated as far as advertising, drug costs, and perks to Dr’s, doesnt mean that you would do away with the medications that in many cases save people’s lives. There is just a lack of knowledge out there…..obviously….

    The reason the demonstrations in DC in the 70’s were successful was because they at least appeared to threaten the congress and authority.. with the possibility of a occupation/takeover/mob violence..

    Even Gandhi who is touted as the leader of the most successful non violent protest movement in history had tens of thousands of his followers and himself beat up by the police and locked up for prolonged periods of time.

  135. Demonstrations in the 60’s and 70’s usually had a civil disobedience component, such as a sit-in on the Pentagon steps. This required a police response as the demonstrators had to be phsically removed. That also led to thousands of people being arrested. Thus…media coverage.

    Today it might lead to thousands of people being disappeared.

  147. By the time of the demonstrations in DC in the 70’s there were a lot of regular army and special forces people who were operating on the side of the peace movement. They provided training to other people in local groups who then knew a lot more about what they were doing and only used the mob to obscure their actions. I would think you would be able to still find some of those people as well as more recent ones not agreeing with the current situation. I doubt that WCW would want to advertise that part of their operation if it exits.

  148. A mob with training? Can’t even get people to register and vote – what’s gonna motivate them to get themselves trained and then put themselves at risk? Love to see it, don’t get me wrong, but most of what I see are the occasional weekend demostrations where a bunch of people get together to hoot and hollar and speechify, and then go home and complain that they underestimated the crowd – or didn’t report it at all.

    If this next election is stolen by the bad people, I hope the good people will get out and fill the streets and demand action – and not leave until things change. But if only half of the people bother to register, and only half of those registered actually can be troubled to take the time to vote – and half (give or take) of those being perfectly content with the status quo, I have a hard time believing that anything will actually happen. Perhaps the Nazis fell, eventually, but a helluva lotta people sure had to die horribly first.

  181. So, is it possible to catch your dogs’ kennel cough? She keeps coughing on me and last night I started to get a sore throat. I downed a bunch of Vitamin C and the sore throat hasn’t gotten worse and has gotten a little better but I feel wiped out. It didn’t help that all I ate most of the day was cake, I guess. I could have got something from my friend and her baby too, I spose.

    Human health risk

    Until recently, kennel cough was considered to not be a human health risk. Recently however, research indicates that Bordetella bronchiseptica may cause disease in some humans, primarily those with compromised immune systems. In normal healthy adults there doesn’t appear to be a risk factor but young children and immunocompromised individuals should take precautions against coming into contact with animals that have symptoms of kennel cough.

  220. Well, in those city tap water taste tests…there is something about NYC water…and its supposed to be up in the top of best tasting water. Yes siree….or it was anyway.
    But Ive heard for years from bagle people all over the place that the difference is the water. And I spent many a year out on the left coast looking for a good bagle.
    But, God, I just read about the water problem in India because the infrastructure is so bad in the cities, and its so bad that middle class people (not to mention the poor) spend all day gathering water as sewage flows through the streets in most places….it is so horrfying….NYC’s water system is on its last leg and I dont know how close they are to completing the replacement main.

    It is something NY’ers like to say. The water in NYC and nearbye suburbs comes from upstate NY and doesn’t have go through treatment plants and is supposed to be pretty good. I’ve just been drinking bottled water for so long that I’m used to the taste of it and can’t really drink tap water easily, I’m not used to the taste anymore.

  296. I do think democratic candidates of late have run weak campaigns and been weak candidates. John Kerry. The reason he lost is not that a third party got in the way, it’s because people looked at him and knew that he was weak, and also that he had views which in some ways weren’t really different from Bush’s. But Bush expressed those views better, so they went with him.

    Ralph Nader came to New Haven Wednesday to blast U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman for his record on business issues. Before he left, though, he ended up taking sharp issue with Lieberman’s challenger in Aug. 8 Democratic primary, Ned Lamont, over the war in Lebanon.
    Nader, the consumer advocate and former Green Party presidential candidate, spoke to an overflow audience of about 75 people in the basement public room of the New Haven Free Public Library.
    He came to deliver a speech, typed on an old Underwood typewriter, attacking Lieberman for his endorsement by the right-wing U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Nader noted that the group generally supports Republicans, not Democrats. He cited a long list of pro-corporate, anti-consumer positions that Lieberman has supported, from free-trade agreements (CAFTA and NAFTA) and the “Cheney/Exxon energy bill” to lawsuit protection for tobacco companies and manufacturers.
    Nader also noted that the U.S. Chamber boasted of helping defeat Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle in 2004. “They defeat the leader of the Democrats in South Dakota in 2004, brag about it, and then endorse Joseph Lieberman,” Nader said.
    Lieberman’s press spokeswoman couldn’t be reached for comment. At his debate with Ned Lamont, Lieberman defended his vote on the energy bill by saying that while he disagreed with certain provisions, he supported it because of other parts that benefited Connecticut and energy conservation.

    Bush supporters give independent’s bid a financial lift

    Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader — still not on the ballot in a single state — has received a recent windfall of contributions from deep-pocketed Republicans with a history of big contributions to the party, an analysis of federal records show.

    Nearly one in 10 of Nader’s major donors — those writing checks of $1, 000 or more — have given in recent months to the Bush-Cheney campaign, the latest documents show. GOP fund-raisers also have “bundled” contributions — gathering hefty donations for maximum effect to help Nader, who has criticized the practice in the past.

    The donations from wealthy Republicans — combined with increasingly vocal Democratic charges that they represent a stealth GOP effort to wound Democrat John Kerry — prompted Nader’s vice presidential running mate, Green Party member Peter Camejo, to suggest the consumer advocate reject the money that doesn’t come from loyal Nader voters.

    “If there has been a wave of these (donations), then that’s something Ralph and I will have to talk about — and about returning their money,” he said Thursday in an interview with The Chronicle. “If you oppose the war, if you’re against the Patriot Act, your money is welcome.

    “But if your purpose is because you think this is going to have an electoral effect, we don’t want that money. I take no money from people who disagree with us,” Camejo said. “We’re not interested in that.”

    But Camejo’s views differ with Nader’s recent defense of the contributions.

    “We have no indication that the Republicans are trying to maneuver support for us,” he said at a recent press conference. “There are three or four major Republican donors who have contributed to my campaign. But that’s because I worked with them on a number of issues. … It’s all very small, relatively small, contributions. And we like it that way.”

    But the financial records show that $23,000 in checks of $1,000 or more have come from loyal Republicans. Among those who have given recently to Nader are Houston businessman Nijad Fares, who donated $200,000 to President Bush’s 2000 inaugural committee; Richard J. Egan, the former ambassador to Ireland, and his wife, Pamela, who have raised more than $300,000 for Bush; Michigan developer Ghassan Saab, who has given $30,000 to the RNC since 2001; and frozen food magnate Jeno Paulucci, and his wife, Lois, who have donated $150, 000 to GOP causes since 2000 alone.

    All have donated the maximum $2,000 to Nader’s campaign since April, records show.

    Asked about the money from GOP backers, Nader campaign spokesman Kevin Zeese countered that many of Kerry’s donors also had given to Republicans, including Bush in the past.
