Booblehead Thread

Filed under: Whatever — pjsauter @ 5:00 am

Well, what wonders do they have in store for us on this, the first Booblehead Sunday of October?

First up, on Press the Meat, Timmy Potatohead has a debate between Ohio scumbag Mike DeWine, and his challenger, Sherrod Brown. My advice to Brown? Dangle a 16 year old boy over the table, and watch Timmuh and Mikey fight over him.

Over at Faze the Nation, bush buddy Bobby Schieffer hosts a real Sunday snoozefest between Senator MBNA, Joe Biden, and Bush “counselor” Dan Bartlett.

Over at Fux News, Weaselface Wallace hosts Michael Scheuer, former chief of the CIA’s bin Laden Unit and Dan Benjamin, former NSC member under Pres. Clinton. Let me guess – it’s all Clinton’s fault.

Over at CNN’s Late Emission, the Wolfman asks the question, “did the Bush administration turn a deaf ear to warnings about the Iraqi insurgency?” And, in order to get an honest, objective answer, he goes to (who else) White House Counselor Dan Bartlett. Plus, the disturbingly named Dick Lugar (I think he’s packin’), and CT’s Democratic Senator, Chris Dodd. As if that wasn’t already more excitement than you can handle, Wolfie also welcomes the US ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, former National Security Adviser (and a man who desperately needs to buy an “O”) Zbigniew Brzezinski, and war criminal/dubya Iraq adviser, Henry Kissinger (his puss must haunt Jill St. John’s nightmares).

If you weren’t boycotting the Goebells Broadcasting Network, you could tune in to This Weak with George Snufalufagus to see, well, gosh, once again, it’s Dan Bartlett, giving us the unvarnished truth about Iraq. Plus, it’s John Murtha, and yet another exciting roundtable, with George :jerk: Will, former Pentagon spokesbitch Tori Clarke, ABC’s resident political hack, Mark “the Snark” Halperin, and architect of the brilliant Al Gore 2000 campaign, Donna Brazile. Plus, US Poet Laureate Donald Hall unveils his first work as the nation’s poet:

There was a Republican from Florida,
Who met a young boy in the corridor.
He pulled down his pants,
And effected a stance
Where he was the bull, and the lad, an unwitting toreador

Later, on 60 Minutes, Bob Woodward sits down with Mike Wallace to plug his book, State of Denial. Not sure if Woodward woke up one day and realized he’d become a pitiful hack or what, but my guess is that the former darling of the Bush White House will suddenly find himself persona non grata. Or maybe he’s still a hack, but released a couple of “hard-hitting” quotes from his book in an attempt to boost sales. Beats me, but if I was Woodward, I’d ask Mike how it feels to have spawned that evil, fuckfaced, Fox whore creep of a son. Ed Bradley does a story on “bum hunting,” (apparently this is a new sport, popular amongst the “future of America”) that looks to be truly disturbing. But, frankly, what would you expect in a nation where torture is legal, protected – and even admired? And finally, Lesley Stahl looks at a new technique for stimulating “Area 25″ of the brain with electrodes, in an effort to help the severely clinically depressed. Looking at Lesley’s hair, I get the feeling she tried this out personally. :omg:
Enjoy your Sunday.

  60. A new U.S. push for greater Russian military openness collided with Cold War habits last week as Russian long-range bombers flew within 15 miles of U.S. airspace off Alaska, Denver Post website reported.

Fully-armed U.S. fighter jets responded, intercepting the two bombers.

The Russian Tu-95 bombers on a training exercise Thursday penetrated a North American buffer zone, said a statement Friday from Maj. Gen. Brett Cairns, operations chief for Colorado Springs-based North American Aerospace Defense Command.

    >>>

Russian commanders had announced an exercise in Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic regions Sept. 26-30 involving 70 bombers and the test-firing of 18 cruise missiles.

It remains unclear how many times the ground-based laser was tested against U.S. spacecraft or whether it was successful.
But the combination of China’s efforts and advances in Russian satellite jamming capabilities illustrate vulnerabilities to the U.S. space network are at the core of U.S. Air Force plans to develop new space architectures and highly classified systems, according to sources.
According to experts, lasers — depending on their power level — could blind electro-optical satellites like the giant Keyhole spacecraft or even interfere with radar satellites like the Lacrosse. Blinding, one source said, is different than disabling given the enormous power required to shoot a laser through the dense lower atmosphere and reach a fast-moving satellite in space. The hardware on the spacecraft can’t be changed given they’re in orbit, but software changes can help them weather disruptive attacks.

  62. Nader wants to be significant again. No doubt he was mighty thrilled to have gotten so much attention in 2000 when some blamed him for not asking his supporters in the states where the election was close to support Gore (which, according to some of the people who worked for him, is what he’d promised to do).

Point of fact it, Nader got 2.74% of the vote nationally in 2000. In 2004, Nader had trouble getting on the ballot in a lot of states. He would have everyone believe it was beacuse the Democrats were “mean” to him, which, of course, they were (would have been interesting to see what would have happened to Nader had his campaign been seen as a threat to the Republicans; my guess is he’d have been driven into the ground so deeply, he’d still be trying to dig his way out, but as it is, they were happy to support him, and he apparently had no problem taking their support). But it was more than those nasty old Democrats being meanies, I think. My guess is that it was tough to get support from the same old places (hence, prostituting himself by taking GOP money – oh, and “what about Kerry” makes about as much sense as “buh-buh-buh-but Clinton…!), and he was unable to recreate the magic of his nearly 3% performance in 2000. Getting on the ballot in many states is hard work, and you need some real machinery in place to get it done. So Nader wound up with something like .34% of the vote. No doubt those 411,000 or so righteous souls can stand tall, proud of their votes.

But, if you’re gonna run a holier-than-thou campaign, you ought to remain holy, no? You know, keep your head held high, your hands clean, and you coffers clear of “dirty” money? Especially if you’re just gonna be a loser anyway.

Because, make no mistake, the Nader campaigns were losers. Bigtime losers. To whatever extent that he helped Bush become president, he can feel significant again. But any ability he might once have had to try and push candidates to the left is pretty much gone, now. Whether it’s fair or not, he will continue to be associated with getting the worst president ever elected.

  70. An editorial from the Washington Post:

It’s Not Just About Rep. Foley.

THE SUDDEN resignation of Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) involves more than an obviously troubled man who sent sexually suggestive e-mails to underage congressional pages. Numerous fellow lawmakers, including Republican leaders, apparently had at least partial knowledge about Mr. Foley’s disturbing conduct. A thorough and prompt accounting is needed of what colleagues knew about his behavior, when they knew it and what they did about it.

    snip
Mr. Foley’s interests were so well-known that pages reportedly warned each other to watch out for him. Rep. John M. Shimkus (R-Ill.), who chairs the House Page Board, said he was told by the clerk of the House about troubling e-mails from Mr. Foley to a page “in late 2005.” Mr. Shimkus said he warned Mr. Foley to cut off contact and “be especially mindful of his conduct” with pages. That hardly seems an adequate response.

    snip

The better course would be to appoint an outside investigator to do the fact-finding. Meanwhile, lawmakers, from the speaker on down, should divulge, fully and quickly, their conduct in this affair.

  72. Well, b@b posted a message over on Marc’s myspace about the radio thing, so, if he actually reads that, then he’d know. Whether he gives a shit or not, who knows?

My feeling is that, since I’m not running the entire show, and since I’m not publishing a playlist ahead of time, and since you can’t actually download what’s on the stream (you could record it, of course, but that’s a pain, and not something most people would bother with), and since all those bits (and a few more) are, in fact out there at TSGS and available to download, and since both Jim and Marc have made mention of the fact that they know of TSGS, I think what I have going should be OK under fair use (especially since there’s no money being made).

Of course, I would stop doing it if asked, but since nobody “official” seems to be doing anything to preserve these treasures, I think it would be a shame to to allow them to disappear forever, so I’m very grateful for the fact that TSGS is archiving them.

Plus, it’s not like there are lots of people tuning in to it. I don’t think there’s ever been more than 5 simultaneous listeners.

We have people who voted for Nader to thank for Bush becoming President. That’s what I believe. The Democrat Party is a minority party and depends on liberals and progressives coalescing around their candidates to win elections. People like Nader should work within the Democrat Party. Otherwise the Rethug tactic of Divide and conquer will guarantee their victory.

As for my backing off it was simply because the more I listen to my podcast the more they suck. I even eliminated (deleted) some of the earlier ones out of embarassment. 83. I didn’t go back and look at last nght’s stuff, but I’ve heard the Nader nonsense before, and whether or not he’s responsible for getting Bush elected (he has some culpability there, but not 100%), he has no chance of ever getting elected, and therfore he is of no use. Frankly, even if he somehow got elected, he’d never be able to actually do anything, because there’s no political infrastructure in place for him to work with.

And, a lot of people seem to forget that just because they think this candidate is wodnerful or that candidate is a corporate sellout doesn’t mean that every voter thinks the same way. In the end, you have a choice between somebody who can maybe get elected (and if they do, you can try to push them your way), and somebody who hasn’t a prayer. You know, in NY, I’ll be voting for Howie Hawkins for Senate. This isn’t because Ralph Nader came and endorsed him (again, Nader is insignificant), but because I don’t care for Hillary’s stance on the war.

OTOH, Hillary has done some good things for NY – especially Upstate NY – and came out quickly in favor of the Alito filibuster, was an early supporter of Net Neutrality, and certainly voted AGAINST torture. If the election was gonna be close, you can bet there’s no way I’d vote for wingnut John Spencer. And, while I hope that Hillary isn’t the candidate for prez in ‘08, I would gladly vote for her before John McCain or Bill Frist, or whatever thug they come up with. At least, if things were tight here in NY. No doubt, I’d have the luxury of voting for a thrid-party candidate here, since we’re a blue state.

  85. Well, in order to get the radio thing really rolling, there needs to be a bunch of content. Enough to make a schedule, so that people would know when to tune in. Right now, there’s just a bunch of mp3’s in the directory with a playlist that plays them in a random order. That’s fine for what it is, but to just start tossing thigns in at random won’t really get the job done.

Ideally, there’d be, say, eight hours of original programming a week. And we could make up an eight-hour schedule. So you’d know that the XYZ show will be on at, say, noon, 8PM, and 4AM, every day. Then, as we get some archived content, we could throw that in, too. So, the fresh content gets played, say, 21times a week, and last week’s stuff get’s in there there 14 times, and eventually you have enough older stuff where you don’t have to play the fresh stuff quite so often. But it’s all precluded on getting regular content.

And god forbid we could get people to subscribe to it. Then we could pay for hosting, and maybe even get a BMI license to play music (not all that expensive, for Internet radio). Start selling swag, promote other stuff, maybe indie music. Oh, the possibilities are endless. All we lack is time and money.

  93. I read some of last night’s blog before I fell asleep. I hate to discuss religion.

But, believing in a diety or dieties is one thing. Deciding that you or your group knows what god wants is the first problem. Becoming god’s agent is another. It’s one thing to believe JC is coming back, it’s another to hate (fill in the blank) and believe you are doing god’s work by harming or excluding that person. Too often that’s where orgainized religion leads.

Interestingly, the word religion comes from re (again or back) and ligare (to tie) . That’s the same root as ligature.

    Nader’s “illegal” GOP backers
Right-wing groups — and Bush-Cheney ‘04 — may have violated federal campaign law to help get Ralph Nader on the ballot in Oregon.
    – by Joe Conason

GOP Donors Double Dipping with Nader
Contributors deny that financial support is designed to hurt Kerry
    –by Wayne Slater

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader is getting a little help from his friends – and from George W. Bush’s friends.

Among the new crop of Nader donors: actor and former Nixon speechwriter Ben Stein, Florida frozen-food magnate Jeno Paulucci and Pennsylvania oil company executive Terrence Jacobs. All have strong ties to the GOP.

Politics: Try to Guess Who’s Backing Nader
    –By Holly Bailey

In his run for the White House, Ralph Nader is getting help from an unexpected source: Republicans. Of the $1 million that Nader has raised for his campaign so far, about $50,000 is from donors who have also given to President George W. Bush’s campaign. One in 10 of Nader’s biggest contributors—individuals who’ve written checks of $1,000 or more—are longtime GOP donors.

Among the notable: Richard Egan, Bush’s former ambassador to Ireland. Egan raised more than $100,000 as a Bush Pioneer in 2000 and at least $200,000 this cycle as one of the Rangers, the Bush campaign’s most elite fund-raising circle. In 2001 Egan contributed $100,000 of his own money to help pay for Bush’s Inauguration, while he and his family rank among the biggest contributors to the Republican Party in general, giving nearly $1 million to the GOP since 1999, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. And according to Nader’s campaign-finance reports, Egan, his son John and his daughter-in-law Pamela each contributed the maximum $2,000 donation to Nader’s effort. Richard Egan, Bush’s former ambassador to Ireland, has given to Nader
    [...]
Another $2,000 contributor to Nader was Houston businessman and longtime Bush-family pal Nijad Fares, the son of Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Issam Fares. In 2000 Fares gave $200,000 to the Bush Inaugural fund.
    [...]
Republicans and conservative groups in battleground states including Oregon, Florida, Wisconsin and Michigan are also working to get Nader on the ballot this November. Democrats have sued to keep him off the ticket in Arizona, where, according to the state’s Democratic Party, half of the 10,000 registered voters who signed petitions last month to get Nader on the ballot were Republicans. The state GOP committees in Michigan and Florida have announced efforts to collect signatures to get Nader on the ballot in those states. Meanwhile, in Oregon, two conservative groups—the Oregon Family Council and Citizens for a Sound Economy—financed phone calls to GOP voters encouraging them to attend a recent Nader nominating convention. CSE, which is headed by former Republican House majority leader Dick Armey, plans to take its campaign to other states. Nader last week rejected calls to disavow Republican efforts on his part….

There are really a lot more of these. Even Joshua Frank wrote about it (although he – predictably – turned it into a “the Democrats are bad, and anyway Ralph can take money from the devil, ‘cuz he’s pure” story).

Of course, Ralph can take money from whomever he wants (even if his running mate finds it unacceptable). The ends justify the means, and all.

All Nader has done is gotten rich and taken the publicity he oculd get…but in between elections, where is he? Does he build the Greens or whoever else hes used along the way?? NO! He turns up to be a repug supported spoiler who, no matter what good he ever did regarding exploding cars and stuff when I was a teenager, has damaged our process and government more than anyone I can remember. He is an ego maniac who has no vision of the big picture…and those of you who want to take to the streets and take back the country with Nader as your king…have fun…all 1 or 2 thousand of you marching around the pacific northwest….
Meantime, the rest of us who have to work within the system to try to change it, if its not too far gone, will keep doing the hard work of trying to get some semblence of reasonable people in office and then move ahead to try to get rid of the worst of the “reasonable” people….
Only after that can there be a revolution or whatever deluded thing youre wasting your time on.
Unless we have a nuclear war or a widespread draft or huge disease that killd half the country, no one is taking to the streets anytime soon. People are just too scared and uneducated and unsure.

  112. You have to discipline yourself Melina to record podcasts from your computer. Or buy a Minidisc. That would probably work best for you since Will has a Apple computer. Record the podcast on the minidisc then it is a simple thing to import that file into Garageband. I did that with my man-in-the-street interviews.

  113. There are tons of free options available for both Winders and Linux to produce, record, and publish podcasts. As for Skype, for PC to PC, it will work anywhere on the Internet, if both sides have Skype. For PC to telephone, it also works anywhere in the world (free in the US and Canada until the end of the year). Sweden is between 2 and 4 cents a minute, depending on what system you’re calling in to.

Skype is probably the best known, but there is also voice calling in Yahoo Messenger, proabably AIM, and others.

  126. iRiver is the cheaper solution Melina. Look at them. And they are portible like a minidisc. Much less $$$ for a iRiver.

    Comment by cnickthomas — October 1, 2006 @ 12:08 pm

  127. From what I understand, you can pay money for a third-party solution to record on an iPod, but you’re limited to 8 kbps (roughly equivalant to landline phone quality), unless there’s some sort of a hack available.

One big reason I opted out of the iPod (that and the optical in/out, ogg support, and it was quite a bit cheaper than a comporable iPod at the time – though that’s changed, now that Apple has gotten some competition). But even my wife’s little Samsung one with the built-in mic does a pretty darn good job, and can do multiple bit rates.

Unfortunately, I rather despise the sound of my own voice (too bad certain politicians aren’t similarly inflicted).

    Comment by pjsauter — October 1, 2006 @ 12:11 pm

  128. No, iRiver’s are no longer cheaper than iPods. They are roughly equivalent, price-wise. IPods tend to be slightly smaller (and have higher capacity gig-wise), and the iRivers come with the ability to record right out of the box, and of course also have FM tuners in them.

    Comment by pjsauter — October 1, 2006 @ 12:13 pm

I have some things that Dell has refurbished that the techs say that by the time theyve had to go througg things a second time that they are perfect because if they get them back again they are losing $$…so they dont want to see them again…

    Comment by Melina — October 1, 2006 @ 12:47 pm

  144. I think as long as there’s at least some warranty on it, refurbished is OK. The mic is important, of course, but I’m quite happy with the sound of mine from the built-in mic. Of course, it’s very dependent on the ambient conditions and all that. If you have an external mic, you have more control over what doesn’t get picked up. The firmware is upgradeable, and you can even (if you’re adventurous) load something like Rockbox on there (haven’t gotten around to doing that, myself).

Have a look around Mystic River for all things iRiver related before you buy anything.

  156. Kerik Under Investigation … Again

    Newsweek

Oct. 9, 2006 issue – New legal problems appear to be looming for Bernard Kerik, the onetime New York City police commissioner and unsuccessful nominee for Homeland Security secretary. Kerik’s lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, confirmed to NEWSWEEK that federal prosecutors are investigating Kerik for an alleged conversation he had with Jeanine Pirro, GOP candidate for New York state attorney general, about bugging a family boat so Pirro could determine whether her husband was having an affair.
    Story continues below ? advertisement

Tacopina said he believes the Feds are also investigating Kerik’s taxes, but declined to give details. (Prosecutors wouldn’t comment on the tax issue.) Kerik’s nomination to succeed Tom Ridge as Homeland Security secretary was withdrawn after Kerik confessed to a “nanny problem”; earlier this year Kerik pleaded guilty to charges of accepting gifts from a company that wanted to do business with New York City’s government. “We are not afraid of any investigation,” Tacopina said.

  163. Mike Malloy Update (from MM fan space on MySpace)

    UPDATE

Thanks to all of you for your “get well” wishes, ecards, email, and message board posts. We’re feeling much better thanks to Theraflu (Mike and Kathy) and baby vitamin C and Benadryl (Molly). We are traveling this weekend on a little unexpected non-business-related trip and I doubt we’ll have any updates for you until we return next week.

As for media news: Mike was recently interviewed by salon.com for an article they’re writing about Air America Radio past, present, and future. As is “Creative Loafing” here in Atlanta. We haven’t been told the publication dates, but watch for them. Mike had some interesting observations.

We’ve recently heard drips and drabs of rather distrubing information about our former employer that – among other things – hint to another possible explanation for our shocking and sudden dismissal. We are hesitant to discuss the details until we can confirm them, and until all our financial interests with Air America are resolved. Unless we sell the story to E! “Behind the Scenes” first. If true, the intrigue and backstabbing and spying and double-dealing would make Caligula blush. You can’t make this stuff up, Truthseekers.

As for those three radio opportunities we keep mentioning – I think we’ll have final news from one of them early next week. The other remains unchanged. The “less likely” opportunity is more so as days go by, however, a fourth option might have popped up! Not trying to be coy, but this really is all we can say at the moment. Once we’re free to speak, we’ll certainly give you the whole story in as much detail as you can stand!

Finally, your email, calls, and petitions on our behalf are so appreciated. It certainly is a big boost to our morale and is noticed by potential radio outlets as well. Thank you thank you thank you so much, we’ll be in touch.

    Watch your back,
    Malloys

The Government Tells the Truth About Drugs–For Once!
    By Doug Bandow

It turns out that the drug czar’s office now admits that marijuana is essentially harmless. Explains analyst Seth Stevenson in an article entitled “The New Case Against Pot? It Makes You Lazy”:

The spot: A high-school kid sits on a couch in a basement rec room, next to a couple of stoner friends. Looking straight at the camera, he says, “I smoked weed and nobody died. I didn’t get into a car accident. I didn’t OD on heroin the next day. Nothing happened. We sat on Pete’s couch for 11 hours.” The couch then magically teleports into the midst of some wholesome teen scenes ( kids mountain biking, ice skating, playing basketball ), while the zonked-out stoners just sit there, looking bored. Our narrator concedes that you’re more likely to die out there in the real world ( “driving hard to the rim” or “ice skating with a girl” ) than on Pete’s couch back in the rec room. But, deciding it’s worth the trade-off, he says, “I’ll take my chances out there.”

In this context, “Pete’s Couch” is a work of bracing honesty. Other spots in the ongoing “Above the Influence” campaign have been unawful, too. In “Whatever,” a straight-edge kid talks about chaperoning his stoned friends around, acting as designated driver and as a sort of den mother for his wasted buddies. The point is that this kid makes his own decisions and chooses to stay off drugs even though his friends are getting high. Aside from cloaking the stoner kids’ faces in shadows ( as though smoking pot makes them incorporeal nothings ), the ad is done in a low-key, nonhyperbolic way. I like that it seems to say it’s OK to be friends with pot smokers ( instead of instantly calling the cops on them, as past ads might have recommended ).

The ads rationally explain why it isn’t smart to use drugs. They do not explain why the government tosses hundreds of thousands of people in jail to stop them from using drugs.

It’s time to realize that drug abuse is a moral, spiritual, and health problem. It shouldn’t be a matter for the criminal law.

There’s a link to this at Raw story, but this is the entire piece.

  199. The ethnic cleansing of Palestine
    by Ilan Pappe ; October 01, 2006

The ethnic cleansing of Palestine, Publication date: October 19th 2006 Hardcover, £16.99, 336pp, 1-85168-467-0

The Arabs will have to go, but one needs an opportune moment for making it happen, such as a war.

    – David Ben-Gurion writing to his son, 1937

There is no such thing as a Palestinian people… It is not as if we came and threw them out and took their country. They didn’t exist.

    – Golda Meir, statement to The Sunday Times, 15 June, 1969

As Israel stands accused by Amnesty International of committing war crimes in Lebanon following its almost 5-week bombardment of that country, which left over a thousand civilians dead and almost a million displaced, a prominent Israeli historian at Haifa University revisits the formative period of the State of Israel to investigate the treatment of the indigenous Palestinians.

In this controversial new book, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, Ilan Pappe uses recently declassified archival sources to investigate the fate suffered by the indigenous population of 1940s Palestine at the hands of the Zionist political and military leadership, whose actions led to the mass deportation of over a million Palestinians from their cities and villages, over 400 villages wiped from the map, and hundreds of civilians dead.

Anyone who has had real deli food (ie Carnegie, Katz, in NYC) would know that this place is a rip off, and the food is not fresh. A real corned beef or pastrami sandwich should be heaping with meat, not servered luke warm, and at least come is a pickle. The macaroni salad was so old it was hard on top, and the service was far from stellar. Even the kraut was horrible. I would never come back to this place.

They have another sandwich, they call “Pavarotti’s Pick”, which I think, is a new and improved “Phili Cheese Steak” sandwich. When served, they bring you a small “Pickle Barrel”, with plenty of awesome dill treats. The menu is huge. The feeling here is “New York City”. My guess, is that they can seat about 36, at a time.

  229. Pastors Guiding Voters to GOP
The Christian right seeks out members who might not go to the polls. The focus is issues, but some leaders don’t oppose endorsement.
By Stephanie Simon, Times Staff Writer
    October 1, 2006

With a pivotal election five weeks away, leaders on the religious right have launched an all-out drive to get Christians from pew to voting booth. Their target: the nearly 30 million Americans who attend church at least once a week but did not vote in 2004.

Their efforts at times push legal limits on church involvement in partisan campaigns. That is by design. With control of Congress at stake Nov. 7, those guiding the movement say they owe it to God and to their own moral principles to do everything they can to keep social conservatives in power.

Preachers “ought to put their toe right on the line,” said Mathew D. Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit law firm that supports conservative Christian causes.

The Rev. Rick Scarborough, a leading evangelical in Texas, has recruited 5,000 “patriot pastors” nationwide to promote an agenda that aligns neatly with Republican platforms. “We urge them to avoid legal entanglement, but there are times in a pastor’s life when he needs to take a biblical stand,” Scarborough said. “Our higher calling is to Christ.”

  237. The Mets play in a minor league; sort of AAA-A – check out how the two leagues did in interleague play- the NL embarrassed itself.
Of the best ten teams in baseball, at least 8 are in the AL, and that might be conservative.
AL Pitchers who get traded to the NL think they’ve died and gone to heaven, because the opposing lineups are just not as good, which is just amplified by the fact that the pitcher hits.
If the Mets don’t get through those mediocre teams and into the Series, its a loss in my book [they outspent the rest of their league by tons of money]. And I love Willie Randolph, as a Yankee fan, but this is a major test for him.

  238. Okay, PJ. I talked to my friend Bob about doing a radio show where he fucks with the Christo Fascist Zombie Brigade. It’s his favorite thing to do. One time, him and a couple of friends, back in the day at ASU, were walking past a christian table handing out pamphletts in front of the MU. So they went and got a table, set it up next to them and proceeded to dump a trash can’s contents onto the table and sat there and handed it out, just like the christians. A little edgy and controvercial, but makes for good publicity. Now to figure out how best to present it on radio. I’m gonna keep bugging him.

  239. Slumping Fox News to mark its 10th year

NEW YORK – Fox News Channel will mark its 10th anniversary this week in an unusual position: knocked back on its heels.

The network is in the midst of its first-ever ratings slump. Cable news’ most stable lineup is being juggled. And the blow-up over President Clinton’s interview with Chris Wallace suggests that Democrats are attacking Fox because they perceive the same vulnerability in the network as they do in the Bush administration.

Maybe some of this was on Fox News chief Roger Ailes’ mind one day last week when he rode the elevator to the 22nd floor of News Corp.’s office tower for an 8:45 a.m. stroll through the network’s ad sales department.

Mr. Ailes? What are you doing up here, someone wondered aloud.

“Taking attendance,” the hard-charging motivator replied.

    Message delivered.

Loved by some, loathed by others, Fox News Channel has been the biggest success in the cable industry and profoundly changed television news since its signal turned on Oct. 7, 1996.

Ailes can still remember a reporter’s laughter during the news conference to introduce the network. He had the last laugh: Fox News beat by a year his plan for overtaking CNN and grew to more than double its rivals in viewership. It made stars of Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity and put “fair and balanced” into news history textbooks.

  243. T-minus ONE HOUR until Grand National Championship featuring the archived material of Marc Maron and Jim Earl on FREERADIOSAIC.ORG.

It’s a fun time for all, community, laughter, a crappy chat room, and political banter… but not all that serious political banter.

    PLEASE SHOW UP!!!!

8 pm CENTRAL TIME on FreeRadioSAIC.org

    Comment by Sue P — October 1, 2006 @ 8:19 pm

  246. Hey Sue P, yeah she’s been barking at me a little and the other dogs when she hears them outside. I tried to take her for a short walk yesterday and she is absolutely terrified of the outside human world. I can’t hardly blame her I guess  I guess we’ll get her used to it little by little.

  247. Kristapea’s got me wanting a doggie. I want a chihuahua so bad. I came real close awhile back to buying one from a local veterinarian. So I keep looking at the Vet’s marquee for “Puppies for sale!” I’m gonna be tempted should I see that message again. :pup:

  250. You should get a dog Nick. I think it would be really rewarding for you. Dogs are awesome. I love cats just as much and they are great pets too. But dogs worship you. Cats prefer to be worshipped. :cat: I’ve met some very sweet Chihuahua’s and I’ve lived with some really shitty little Chihuaqhua’s. Much of it is how they are raised. :pup:

    Comment by Melina — October 1, 2006 @ 10:23 pm

  262. Two big helpings of steaming Maron! Yeah!

Despite our best effort of planning (Rumsfeld-class) Gypsy and I met at Portland’s Union Station for the ride to Seattle on Saturday. Because of the excellent planning and hospitality of Roxie and SBlue we met up with Travis for dinner & two!-two!-two! showings of Marc’s best at Giggles of Seattle.

If you ever wondered if Marc was pulling his (sucker) punches when, after being teased by Jim or Barry or Bruce, And challenged with the signature, “You wanna’ play? C’mon, you wanna’ play?” well…. Not being limited by the demands of the FCC and the M$M radio we got to experience Marc flay a couple of annoying hecklers while making the rest of the audience double-over in laughter and drool on our shoes. (Not that he was mean spirited: Marc was delivering The Funny to all, including a 17-year old son of a fan and a couple visiting all the way from Kentucky.) His rehearsed and his extemp banter and rants were over the top, once he’d vanquished the gomers back into the darkness.

His two shows to a packed house were not carbon copies — each show was different. (Marc, after noticing the gang of five at the second show, told the audience that we would get fresh material, even if it was at the expense of the other 100 in the audience. Despite his repeated guilt-trip, the second show was even better than the first.)

Roxie supplied all the goodies for a private after show party, and both Marc and Mishna (who opened for Marc with a great set of her own) were gracious, communicative, and friendly to their fans despite obviously exhausted being exhausted.

A fun weekend! Beg, steal, borrow, rendition, or waterboard your way to a live show and relive the times that were TMMS and MS with new material and facets you could only imagine..

Thank you SBlue and Roxie — you’re gems in an Emerald City

  263. Israel Shahak’s Jewish History, Jewish Religion

Foreword by Gore Vidal [p. vii-viii]

    ————————————————————————

Sometime in the late 1950s, that world-class gossip and occasional historian, John F. Kennedy, told me how, in 1948, Harry S. Truman had been pretty much abandoned by everyone when he came to run for president. Then an American Zionist brought him two million dollars in cash, in a suitcase, aboard his whistle-stop campaign train. ‘That’s why our recognition of Israel was rushed through so fast.’ As neither Jack nor I was an antisemite (unlike his father and my grandfather) we took this to be just another funny story about Truman and the serene corruption of American politics.

Unfortunately, the hurried recognition of Israel as a state has resulted in forty-five years of murderous confusion, and the destruction of what Zionist fellow travellers thought would be a pluralistic state – home to its native population of Muslims, Christians and Jews, as well as a future home to peaceful European and American Jewish immigrants, even the ones who affected to believe that the great realtor in the sky had given them, in perpetuity, the lands of Judea and Sameria. Since many of the immigrants were good socialists in Europe, we assumed that they would not allow the new state to become a theocracy, and that the native Palestinians could live with them as equals. This was not meant to be. I shall not rehearse the wars and alarms of that unhappy region. But I will say that the hasty invention of Israel has poisoned the political and intellectual life of the USA, Israel’s unlikely patron.

Unlikely, because no other minority in American history has ever hijacked so much money from the American taxpayers in order to invest in a ‘homeland’. It is as if the American taxpayer had been obliged to support the Pope in his reconquest of the Papal States simply because one third of our people are Roman Catholic. Had this been attempted, there would have been a great uproar and Congress would have said no. But a religious minority of less than two per cent has bought or intimidated seventy senators (the necessary two thirds to overcome an unlikely presidential veto) while enjoying support of the media.

In a sense, I rather admire the way that the Israel lobby has gone about its business of seeing that billions of dollars, year after year, go to make Israel a ‘bulwark against communism’. Actually, neither the USSR nor communism was ever much of a presence in the region. What America did manage to do was to turn the once friendly Arab world against us. Meanwhile, the misinformation about what is going on in the Middle East has got even greater and the principal victim of these gaudy lies – the American taxpayer to one side – is American Jewry, as it is constantly bullied by such professional terrorists as Begin and Shamir. Worse, with a few honorable exceptions, Jewish-American intellectuals abandoned liberalism for a series of demented alliances with the Christian (antisemtic) right and with the Pentagon-industrial complex. In 1985 one of them blithely wrote that when Jews arrived on the American scene they ‘found liberal opinion and liberal politicians more congenial in their attitudes, more sensitive to Jewish concerns’ but now it is in the Jewish interest to ally with the Protestant fundamentalists because, after all, “is there any point in Jews hanging on dogmatically, hypocritically, to their opinions of yesteryear?’ At this point the American left split and those of us who criticised our onetime Jewish allies for misguided opportunism, were promptly rewarded with the ritual epithet ‘antisemite’ or ’self-hating Jew’.

Fortunately, the voice of reason is alive and well, and in Israel, of all places. From Jerusalem, Israel Shahak never ceases to analyse not only the dismal politics of Israel today but the Talmud itself, and the effect of the entire rabbinical tradition on a small state that the right-wing rabbinate means to turn into a theocracy for Jews only. I have been reading Shahak for years. He has a satirist’s eye for the confusions to be found in any religion that tries to rationalise the irrational. He has a scholar’s sharp eye for textual contradictions. He is a joy to read on the great Gentile-hating Dr Maimonides.

Needless to say, Israel’s authorities deplore Shahak. But there is not much to be done with a retired professor of chemistry who was born in Warsaw in 1933 and spent his childhood in the concetration camp at Belsen. In 1945, he came to Israel; served in the Israeli military; did not become a Marxist in the years when it was fashionable. He was – and still is -a humanist who detests imperialism whether in the names of the God of Abraham or of George Bush. Equally, he opposes with great wit and learning the totalitarian strain in Judaism. Like a highly learned Thomas Paine, Shahank illustrates the prospect before us, as well as the long history behind us, and thus he continues to reason, year after year. Those who heed him will certainly be wiser and – dare I say? – better. He is the latest, if not the last, of the great prophets.
    :omg: :sdavid:
