King Inauguration Day

Today’s kind of a double-dose of “fuck you” to the wingnut racist assholes out there. Not only does that you-know-what get ceremonially sworn in front of upwards of a million of the lazy slackers on the public dole that he gave all kinds of gifts to so they’d vote for him and not have to work for a living, but it’s also a public holiday honoring that other you know what who fucked everything up for the white man (and we had such a good thing going for the first couple hundred years, too). No matter how disappointed I am with Obama, it’s always nice to see a few teabagger’s heads explode. Which is a neat trick, because their skulls are basically filled with inert ingredients.

Otherwise, there’s no much going on today. The weather has turned a bit chilly – and temperatures are supposed to drop all week. They say the high temperature on Thursday will be in the single digits (take that, Al Gore). I’m trying to decide if I have enough ambition to leave the house to buy groceries and get gas. Plus I should drop off the checks to pay the property taxes. I really ought to, but that would involve getting dressed, and I don’t actually have to leave the house until Wednesday, so I dunno.

I doubt I’ll be watching any of the inauguration, though I gather that there’s really big news: Michelle Obama has bangs now. Now I just need to find out who made the dress she’ll be wearing, and my day will be complete. I’m sure there will be plenty of stupid-looking hats on display, too.

It was nice that he mentioned Seneca Falls. A shame he didn’t mention that, in addition to Women’s rights, Seneca Falls was the model for Bedford Falls, where the common people triumph over the greedy and evil epitome of the financial industry, Henry Potter.

While the eyes of the nation were turned toward President Barack Obama’s second inauguration on Monday, the Virginia State Senate managed to hurriedly pass a bill that would redistrict the state’s senate seats.

The vote, 20-19, would have been a tie had Democratic Senator Henry Marsh been present. Marsh, a civil rights leader, was in Washington, D.C., attending the inauguration.

Had Marsh been present, however, the state’s Lieutenant Governor, Bill Bolling, would likely have broken the tie. The bill was reportedly pushed through in a matter of hours.

According to Virginia politics blogger Ben Tribbett, the move could potentially eliminate at least one Democratic seat, the 25th district, which currently belongs to former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Sen. Creigh Deeds (D).

This isn’t the first time that Virginia has attempted to redraw district lines conveniently for Republicans. Just last month, the state’s Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli lobbied to have the state exempt from the Voting Rights Act’s redistricting requirements because the state had “outgrown” racism. Largely, redistricting has disenfranchised Democratic votes.

The gerrymandering bill now goes to the heavily Republican House of Delegates for a vote, where it will likely face little opposition.

My kinder nature after such a beautiful day yesterday says that many VA repubs find the actions of these a**wholes abhorent and repugnant even if they have not already left or been driven out of the party. They should really do something about this rather than cowering while the Tealiban destroys what is left of the brand. That’s about as nice as I am going to get.

I think Gubnor McDonnell with his ambitious last year in office agenda meant to be his catapult into the 2016 repug presidential race might just knock this down. Spokespeople are saying that he and the lt. gubnor Cooch who seeks to replace him did not know anything about this and it does not help their cause. Also, the Fedrul courts could look a little askance at such a thinly disguised maneuver to weaken minority representation in the state legislature. Maybe a frugal McDonnell might not see much good from the massive legal fees that would be spent to argue the indefensible.

At least it disabuses me of any inclinations I might have about moving back some day.

The courts think gerrymandering is fine. Sometimes they get concerned about restricting minority voting. I will be surprised if they think that the new redistricting is a problem.

I can’t figure out why they are still redistricting. I think there have been some lawsuits that have set back something I thought was supposed to be done two years ago.

I have tried to resister to vote from Shelter Island 3 times. On the last attempt I sent the application certified mail/return receipt and finally, today, I am registered to vote once again. The gentleman to whom I spoke swears I have been registered since August but he is the only person who was able to find that record.

The problem seems to be that they check addresses with the post office and, as there is no mail delivery on Shelter Island, they could not find the address. This also is a problem buying things online as the address is often rejected as incorrect. GPS, for the first time this year, began to find addresses on Shelter Island.
