So, I know Larsen and Maron had a bit of a falling out and all. But in his blog
post he didn’t seem necessarily angry at Maron as much as angry about the whole
situation that created it. But he only has a link on his blog to Rachel’s show. Just
an observation, don’t really know where I was going with that.
Krista, I think you were just going, not necessarily going anywhere.
I still wish there were a way for Marc to end up doing show biz reporting for The Colbert Report. I mean, Marc is just about as full of himself (in character) as Colbert is of HIMself and the match would be perfect. Marc could even do the Brittney Spears bit from Radio Theater. And for his first month’s worth of interviews he could spend the whole interview making his subject sympathize with him for losing his AAR gig.
“When you’ve become the president’s best friend on the war in Iraq, you should not be in office, especially if you’re in the opposing party,” Mr. Weicker, 74, said in a phone interview from his home in Essex, Conn. “I’m going to do everything I can to see that Joe Lieberman does not get a free pass.”
It’s sad when a Republican is more progressive that your current senator.
I see someone over at Huffington was complaining about us wanting perfection from AAR. I just responded that we wanted listenable radio, not perfection, and AAR isn’t delivering.
Perfection – No. Morning Sedition – Yes! I’m willing to put up with an hour of commercials and otherwise nondescript programming for one gem during the day. Is that too much to ask? Apparently. However, being a progressive optomistic cynic, I hold out hope for Marc’s next venture.
Shows I’ve loved and lost:
Kolchak “The Night Stalker” with Darren McGavin
The Job (Dennis Leary’s gem that accurately protrayed cops)
Get a Life (Chris Elliot, an acquired taste or mental defect, I’m not sure, but I loved the show.)
Morning Sedition (res ipsa loquitur)
Police Squad – The show that spawned the Naked Gun movies
Sledgehammer – great Dirty Harry spoof
The Goodies – Ran for 10 years in UK. PBS dropped it after a few episodes
Dave Allen at Large – outstanding Irish comic famous for “sitdown” standup delivery an satirical jabs at the Catholic Church. Refused to let his material air more than a few episodes in the US after PBS censors butchered his material.
1960’s Smothers Brothers Show with David Steinberg and Pat Paulsen
National Lampoon Radio Hour (ended up getting original SNL with most of cast and writers which was nice)
Morning Sedition
Ah, I loved the Goodies. Night Stalker and Get a Life, too. Actually, pretty much everything that’s mentioned above. Anybody remember Lotsa Luck, with Dom Deluise?
I sure hope all this adulation and comparisons to some of the greatest shows of the
20th century doesn’t go to Marc’c head. Hopefully he’s insecure enough that that won’t happen.
For the Goodies fans… go to http://www.bbc.co.uk. Once there, look for the Radio section near the bottom of the page, click the”listen to the shows you’ve missed” link. Look for the “comedy and quiz” link. It’ll open the BBC Radio Player. When you finally get to that, look for I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again. Clue is a parody game show that features two of the Goodies, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden. Read that again is a pre-Python 1960’s comedy sketch show that featured all three Goodies along with John Cleese. I would have posted the links, but the smartfilter here is blocking them.
I didn’t hear the Slander Minute today. Did I miss it or did they skip it?
If I missed it, I’d appreciate an approximate time it was broadcast or better, its location on the podcast.
Does anybody know what the definition of “growing” is? The other day, the AAR site said, “87 affiliates and growing.” Then I noticed this morning it was, “86 affiliates and growing,” and now it’s “84 affiliates and growing.” So, I’m thinking maybe “growing” is some fancy-schmancy radio term.
Does anyone remember “The Aristorcrats”, with Gig Young and David Niven (among other greats) playing a family of upper-crust con artists? Oy, it was priceless…and they always conned rich people trying to get even richer.
“Cannonball”-1/2 hour 18-wheeler drama
“Whirleybirds” 1/2 hour helicopter drama
“Rescue 8” 1/2 hour rescue drama
I think the basic plots from these episodes have been recycled more times than John Kerry’s smile. So far as I know, none are in syndication.
After listening to 620KPOJ in Portland from the very first day, the brain-dead, agressive ads are beginning to take their toll–as are Big hEaD Schulze (simply unlistenable) and Randi (increasingly unlistenable). Mike Mollory is welcome at my house any time, dead or alive.

Does anyone remember that show Action with Jay Mohr from the summer of 2001 I believe. It was on for maybe a month or 2. It was so raunchy and hilarious I knew it wouldn’t last on regular tv.
Ah, Fernwood Tonight. Barth Gimble, Jerry Hubbard, Happy Kine and the Mirth Makers.
Fernwood Tonight introduced me to Tom Waits singing “The Piano Must Be Drinking.”
Add that to my previous list.
Dave Allen At Large was great — Jeez, that was thirty-some years ago…out here in Orygun, anyway. Thanks for reminding me.
Domestic Life with Martin Mull. In one episode the family dentist (invited over for dinner because dentists have a high suicide rate) was playing a dreadfully slow and dark song on the piano in their home. One of the characters remarked that it sounded like a “Mahler dirge-along.” Didn’t even make a full season.
And the Sci-Fi spoof Quark with Richard Benjamin as the captain of a space garbage scow. Buck Henry…The Bettys, a pair of gorgeous clones, and if I recall, the co-pilot was a humanoid ficus tree. Again, didn’t finish a season.
I forgot Fernwood/America 2night with Martin Mull and Fred Willard. I loved the guests like W.D.”Bud” Price, the mayor played by Kenneth Mars, with a ping pong ball strapped to his chin.
I found some NTSC versions of Dave Allen anthologies on eBay. and watched some of his stuff on DVD when I was in Sweden visiting my girlfriend too. It was good seeing those again after 30+ years. Dave Allen passed away earlier this year. I was sad to hear that, especially when he was working with Paul Jackson, producer of the Young Ones and the early seasons of Red Dwarf, on a TV
I also forgot to mention The Two Ronnies. Ronnie Barker, the taller of the two Ronnies, died recently too.
I forgot to mention some other shows woth checking out while typing those directions to get to the BBC Comedy and Quizes. One worth checking out is 99p Challenge. It’s an improv comedy/parody game show that feature Simon Pegg, from Spaced and Shaun of the Dead as a regular. There’s also reruns of the Goon Show, the radio show that helped launch Peter Sellers’ career. 4 at the Store features current UK stand up comics doing their acts at a top London comedy club. Old Harry’s Game is a situtation comedy set in Hell. The UK comedy writer/producer Andy Hamilton is hysterical as Satan. Hamilton is a world class comic smartass and gallows humorist. It would be great to hear Maron do a radio project with him. News Quiz is a comedy quiz show featuring some top comics and humor writers commenting on current affairs, and some unintentionally funny headlines from various sources
Somebody has to be first. Come on sheeple!

Lowell Weicker may return to politics to challenge Lieberman in ’06.
It’s sad when a Republican is more progressive that your current senator.
I see someone over at Huffington was complaining about us wanting perfection from AAR. I just responded that we wanted listenable radio, not perfection, and AAR isn’t delivering.
I just want them to recognize when they have something that’s as close to perfection as can be reasonably expected, and support it.

I almost forgot Lotsa Luck! Anyone remember the Marty Feldman Comedy Machine and Pat Paulsen’s 1/2 a Comedy Hour.
If I’d have been old enough at the time, I’d have voted for Pat Paulsen for President (Picky, Picky, Picky).
His campaign site is still up, even though he died in ’97.
I sure hope all this adulation and comparisons to some of the greatest shows of the
20th century doesn’t go to Marc’c head. Hopefully he’s insecure enough that that won’t happen.
I hope not either. One Randi Rhodes is enough.

Ah, sorry about that. As an anti-spam device, any comment with 3 or more links has to be moderated before it shows up. I may need to up that a bit.

“Growing” is HillarySpeak for “shrinking”.

How about a show that kept on evolving:
Fernwood 2Night
Forever Fernwood
America 2Night
I think about those shows and have hope that Maron and company mutate into something just as funny and biting.
Does anyone remember that show Action with Jay Mohr from the summer of 2001 I believe. It was on for maybe a month or 2. It was so raunchy and hilarious I knew it wouldn’t last on regular tv.
And then Jay Mohr hosted that reality show “Last Comic Standing”. At AAR, the winner of that crown is … Al Franken.
Ah, Fernwood Tonight. Barth Gimble, Jerry Hubbard, Happy Kine and the Mirth Makers.
Fernwood Tonight introduced me to Tom Waits singing “The Piano Must Be Drinking.”

Correction, The Piano Has Been Drinking.
Flashbacks!

I’d forgotten about Quark – great stuff. Any Max Headroom fans out there? The show was a bit prophetic when I look at the way media is run today . . .
