The US election system is rigged so that a third party unless it has more than 50% in congress is as useless as the democrats are now. We need among a few hundred other things to get rid of majority rule . Not likely given the system as it now stands.

Pretty much true about 3rd parties. A problem that I see is that people tend to vote, and then go home. We know what happens then. Public pressure is small and selective. On the other hand, Business interests have the resources to ensure their needs are met. I see change come about when massive (think Seattle WTO) protests are common. From what i have read about FDR and the great depression the wealthy only allowed him to put through the new deal because they were afraid of a national uprising and that would destroy their property and perhaps them too. The WTO demonstrations showed the same thing.. fires, broken windows ,police unable to retain full control. That kind of thing is really disturbing to the wealthy. Right now if you got rid of the right wing media or intimidated it such that it would report all the news … ok at least some of the news.. That would be a good start. From what I have read lately FOX has gone from the number one news channel to number five. People have cut back on their listening to right wing talk radio but liberal radio still has only about 10% of the audience of the right wing radio. ( like 1.5 million/day compared to 15 million/day) I don’t quite know if that’s a result of most people on the left having to work 12 hours a day in this economy and the right wing listeners being those lying around the pool waiting for their dividend checks or that the right wing radio has just been around a lot longer.
I find radio with a blog attached is quite superior to TV. I saw where the FCC says analog TV broadcasts will be gone by 2009. I have to wonder if everyone will be able to spend the money on a digital TV or even an adapter box. I am certainly not going to subscribe to cable for 200 channels of garbage.

I have a friend who was in a fairly prominent rock band in the early 1990s. I ran into him today, and we started talking about AAR and politics. I mentioned Goldberg, and had a fit. Hehas had dealings with DG, and said that DG was a real jackass. I mean a shit snorting pig’s ass. I invited him to come to this blog and tell his insider story. His response was that he feared a lawsuit if he did so.
(You know. Outside of name-calling and over the top rhetoric, I have stayed fairly neutral about DG. I heard that he did good work with Tikkun. In my mind, he was probably just the typical business executive. I mean, saints need not apply. But the rocker said DG was worse than average. He was not surprised that people post that DG helped do in Kurt Cobain–he said that DG put incredible pressure on Nirvana to tour, record nonstop.)

Kong, it’s really easy if you wanna get into downloading shows. It doesn’t take long at all. I only download the Daily Show, Colbert Report, The Simpsons…… anyway download a program like Azureus, then go to sites like mininova.org or tvtorrents.com and then begin your downloading….
The Daily show takes no time to down load because it’s just so widly popular…. They are posted everyday…
By the way…have you seen Left of the Dial? I have it, you could probably take it straight from my server if you wanna. Also, download a video player called VLC, it handles basic AFI video files….

Hi. I never posted on the show blog but once or twice, but I have a couple of things to say. One, Maron is a class act all the way, and two, Goldberg may actually be stupid. When he killed Unfiltered, I gave Springer a week and then went back to NPR Morning Edition. That’s when I started listening to the MS podcast; I don’t do early.
So, DannyBoy doesn’t like comedy, or commedians, check. Here’s what I think happened: he read those notices Rachel got from her post on little Fucker Carlson’s bow-tie show on MSNBC and figured he’d better bolt her in with something a little jucier than one hour at 5 am, quick like, before someone else lured her away. I think he thought he was making a really smart move. Where he effed up was failing to actually listen to her show. She’s fantastic when she’s pounding the news, she’s genius at shaking out the obscure bits that the powers try to sneak past the door. However, the format is a fucking straightjacket; it’s boring and tiresome, the noises are by now just gag-me stupid. I’m not saying this to bust on her; she’s great, and I admire her work. I’m just sayin’ that the show is a couple of major revisions away from competing with EITHER morning news or morning drive. I think Goldnutz has some fantasy of competing with NPR. He got Rob Glaser to cover his arse by blabbering about the importance of the upcoming election. The thing is, I’m pretty sure they tossed the audience, the demographic the Dems most need to cultivate right in the toilet. It would have made a hell of a lot more sense to start working more news into the existing format.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to Maron being back on the air, and honestly, I’m not sure Air America is going to be part of my morning next year.

I’m really gonna miss the show. I’m sitting here at work listening to the last show feeling sad, pissed, frustrated, and laughing hysterically. Thanks Marc and Mark.

Jeany, Much of radio’s success revolves on repetition. Lots of people want to hear the same songs on the hour, etc. Therefore we can’t really fault Rachel for going through the same schtick every morning (“I spent a lot of time looking at the news yesterday. While I had to take a quick break, Kent Jones took over”). However, I rather more like the mix of the comforting bumper music and the totally unexpected stuff. That’s what made Unfiltered better than 99% of the radio out there, but the new programming model somehow caused Rachel’s show to vear close to the NPR formula. Luckily Rachel has not yet caused my brain to clench in agony to the robotic gridlock I get with the national/local NPR morning team.
As far as I can tell, Lizz Winstead was responsible for programming the comedic elements into the AAR schedule. That part of the original philosophy is now almost gone. Watch as the comedy highlight bits start disappearing from the AAR home page.
One thing you have to remember about Goldberg. His biggest claim to fame among the majority of people is that he was responsible for the mind-numbingly repetitive hit, “Who Let the Dogs Out?”
Actually, that would make a good name for Maron’s new show.

WTF??? Why does ANY market need NINE christian stations? :barf: Isn’t the Phx area adequately served by six or seven stations spewing the bland nonsense that is christian music? Are the program directors trying to drive their listeners into the arms of Howard Stern? :priest:
Honestly, I would scratch out both my eardrums with a rusty nail before enduring crap such as that. No offense to any christians on the blog, but seriously, most of your music sucks it raw, with the exception of the White Stripes, who shouldn’t count because their music is not presented to the public as christian music. So there.

Hey WebHT — Thx for the reply. It was Goldberg who started his tenure at AAR by killing Unfiltered, wasn’t it? And Lizz screamed at him, walked out, and sued his ass? I wonder if that just inflated the giant hard-on he has for comedy, like he’s this GeorgeBushLike little boy trying to prove he’s got a big dick and he’s running the show.
Intellectually, I understand the repetition meme, but the bits don’t have to be as ham-fisted as the ones sucking up time on TRMS. If I had to listen to the show live, I’d be tempted to drop it, the bits are so tiresome. As it is, I listen to the podcast and when i’m at the computer, I just fast forward over the filler.
But back to Goldberg; is there any way to get the entire Board roster? Time will tell, but frankly, he should be fired. His programming decisions will, I believe, prove to be very destructive to Air America’s mission, and to the goals of the progressives who form the core of the audience. I would really like to know if he got ANY support from listeners for his moves. I think you only have to look at the place The Daily Show holds in the culture to understand what Goldberk killed off. Partisan news will not save journalism, but wild satire just might.
