I trust that those of you who did the family thing over the weekend survived alright. Despite some rather glaring differences of opinion between myself and my in-laws over things like the MTA strike, dubya, and the whole Iraq debacle, we managed to avoid fisticuffs and have a nice time. It’s interesting how my father-in-law can think that FDR was a great man, that we need some socialism in this country to even things out between the corporatists who can afford to buy politicians, and the rest of us, that we need a national health system, that what they’re doing to old people sucks, that dubya has done a lot of really stupid things, and yet he still, somehow, disagrees with me that dubya is the worst president in my lifetime, thinks Iraq really showed all the dictators in the world not to mess with the US of A, and he still thinks that Gore or Kerry would have done a worse job – or at least wouldn’t have been any better than this idiot we have now. Oh, and that Clinton should have been thrown in jail. π I mean, what does it take?
Maybe it’s pride that prevents your father-in-law from taking the next step. It must feel awful to have voted for Bush and then see that he didn’t do even ONE thing right.
I did a google-news search on Marc Maron, and five newspapers include him in their TV lineups for today, such as:
San Jose Mercury News, USA – 28 minutes ago
… 12:35 am Late Night With Conan O’Brien Ch. 8, Ch. 11 — Actor Jeff Goldblum; comic Marc Maron; North Mississippi Allstars perform. (CC) (TV-14) (HDTV). …
Hey pj and foggyblue. Sorry to hear about your in-laws differences. Some people just walk around with blinders on. Foggyblue, yeah he’s on Conan tonight. I wish I was livin’ in the states just so I could watch it. I’ll try to download it later. Is it a new show or a rerun? I wonder if Maron will mention the new show?
Your f-i-l is a victim of NewSpeak. what more can be said. the 6-9 slot on AAR sux. The damage Goldberg has done is obvious. What will it take….. and how long?
:peace: The difference between Democrats and Republicans is the footprints on the Democrats’ asses! :peace: 2006: Incumbents should be filling their trousers with butt biscuits!:peace:
BASCOMBE!!!!! Hey buddy, what’s up!
Mornin’, all.
I’m pretty sure tonight’s show is a rerun–although the show’s official site doesn’t indicate whether that’s true or not. I thought someone said here last week that it was a show from August, and the Jeff Goldblum/Marc Maron lineup sounds vaguely familiar. Also, think about it: Conan tapes in NY and Marc is in LA π –for now.
Must . . . get . . . more . . . coffee . . .
Hey kahn, thanks for the info. I wish they would make some sort of announcement about this supposed new show! :fustrate:
Hey, Jason. Did a little more research. The site lists it as episode 2099–and Friday (12/24)’s show was 2166, so clearly a rerun. (Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it, though!)
π
Evening / Morning.
Jason- Left of the Dail was very interesting to see. While filled with hopeful good intentions, the loss of MS makes it a sad movie.
Good Morning Jason, Bascombe and Foggy Blue. All I had to do to be uninvited to holiday festivities is email petitions to my aunt. Although, they never invited me before I sent petitions either but if they had any inclination to invite me over since the selection I ruined it. Just as well, my cousin and aunt have hooked up with rednecks that have turned them from being moderate cheeseheads to dumbass repugs. The last time I spent any time with them I had to listen to a bunch of racist crap and I didn’t have the guts to say anything about it back then. Plus I was outnumbered 8 to 1.
Hey Kahn and KK!
Mornin Krista, evening Kong! How did you see it? Did you buy it or rent it? I agree, I tried to watch it again last night, but the loss of MS really does make it sad….
What network is Conan on? That’s one thing I can see as long as I stay up late enough.
Krista, he’s on NBC….
Hi kristapea! Conan’s on NBC.
Left otd was downloaded a whileback. It was my first torrent file. Thanks for the suggestions of site on the weekend thread, jason.
you’re welcome Kong! :fire:
Is the firetruck out of focus or am I?
:omg: Hi guys! great to be here. I had a melancholy holiday. We buried my uncle on the 23rd at Arlington Nat. Cem. I listened this morning for an hour and AAR mornings is dead. Not just dead-to-me, but really dead. If they weren’t in trouble before, they are now! I gotta go make up with my girlfriend for the holiday melancholy, so this qualifies as a drivethrough. It’s great to see your voices! :peace:
Plus I was outnumbered 8 to 1.

Hi all,
I had to take a break for a couple of hours because there wasn’t enough electricity left in the battery bank (only 11.55, and 12 Volts is optimum) to run the computer. I fired up the old generator because weeks and weeks of rain have zeroed out the solar collectors. Then the satellite dish for the internet didn’t work because of heavy rain. Now the battery bank is putting out enough volts, the computer works, the satellite dish works (on and off, the heavy rain is still making it tenuous sometimes), and here I am again.
Checked google news for Marc again and found this line in the New York Daily News (what kind of newspaper is that?) in its Top Stories that Made (air)Waves in ’05:
“Air America (WLIB, 1190 AM) brought in Jerry Springer, and Marc Maron left the morning show.”
I’m always curious about how well the mainstream press is keeping track of Marc. I want him to be a Big Star. He deserves the recognition, and the nation could use his honesty and his humor.
foggyblue, yeah I’ve done my own searching Marc Maron on google news and I’m right there with ya’ buddy! I think if Danny “Stool”Berg would have shown more patience and fondness for MS, Morning Sedition would have been AAR’s #1 show. Could you imagine MS on from like 11:00 to 2:00 PM? Let’s hope for the best on this new show, I’m still a little suspicious…
foggyblue, hello. I’d like to see Marc go big time, too.
May I ask where and how you’re living in these conditions?
Jim Earl’s page is where I was listening to Mort Mortenson
hello King Kong, I live in the coastal mountains in northern california eight miles from the end of the paved road, fifty minutes from the post office, two hours from the nearest traffic light, moved here with my husband in the 1970s. there are a bunch of us old hippies out here still having a good time and still making noise.
where do you live? i noticed that jasonwkinney said good evening to you.
I miss Mort Mortenson. The first time I heard him I was shocked for about 30 seconds and then couldn’t stop laughing.
I wonder if Marc is going to carry these characters with him to his new show. AAR doesn’t own these characters, does it? There isn’t anything that would keep Marc from building from the same foundation that he and the others have so carefully laid in the last 20 months, is there?
Kristapea- It’s good to see JimEarl has gotten content up on his page. β
foggyblue- I’m in Taiwan, a neighbor to jasonwkinny in Japan, working as a director of an American language school here. It’s the big city life here.
Rolled over from the weekend thread …
Jeany,
Much of radioβs success revolves on repetition. Lots of people want to hear the same songs on the hour, etc. Therefore we canβt really fault Rachel for going through the same schtick every morning (βI spent a lot of time looking at the news yesterday. While I had to take a quick break, Kent Jones took overβ). However, I rather more like the mix of the comforting bumper music and the totally unexpected stuff. Thatβs what made Unfiltered better than 99% of the radio out there, but the new programming model somehow caused Rachelβs show to vear close to the NPR formula. Luckily Rachel has not yet caused my brain to clench in agony to the robotic gridlock I get with the national/local NPR morning team.
As far as I can tell, Lizz Winstead was responsible for programming the comedic elements into the AAR schedule. That part of the original philosophy is now almost gone. Watch as the comedy highlight bits start disappearing from the AAR home page.
One thing you have to remember about Goldberg. His biggest claim to fame among the majority of people is that he was responsible for the mind-numbingly repetitive hit, βWho Let the Dogs Out?β
Actually, that would make a good name for Maronβs new show.
βWho Let the Douchebags Out?β
While that’s funny, “Hey Buddy, What’s Up” might catch a few more liteners. IMHO
Goodnight everyone! I’ve been listening to the last War on Brains! “Firetruck, the missing piece”…….maybe that could be incorporated in Marc’s new show name…..:fire:
Jinx Kong, G’night buddy! :blech:
night jasonwkinny. that’s a GREAT biit.
:fire:
:yinyang: when did this show up?
Thanks!
Listened to the re-run of Majority Report last night, the show with Marc on the eve of his last day at AAR.
I hate to run this by all of you again, but what do you think actually happened in the Morning Sedition incident with Steve Gilmartin?
Marc described it to Janeane and Sam that Steve Gilmartin was introduced out of the blue to Marc as a talent scout who said he thought Marc was doing a great job and looked forward to Marc’s contributions to AAR after he left, and the whole thing irritated Marc mightily because he said it was news to him that he was being asked to be a contributor to AAR and he got mad and yelled at Brendan McDonald and just had to get out of there so he walked out and we listened to a lot of elevator music.
Later when Marc was on Majority Report he said he was sorry he’d yelled at McDonald but he was so exercised that he (Marc) had just had to get the hell out of the Morning Sedition studio, so he left.
When we heard the fight replayed numerous times on Friday, it sounded like a funny hoax with Timmy the Turtle and all, but I think Marc was being honest with us when he described the situation to Janeane and Sam. (Sorry Janeane, I never remember how to spell your name.)
Did anyone else listen to the Majority Report re-run last night? I felt much calmer listening to it this time around because I know Marc’s headed for a bright new future. I hope.
foggyblue–
Didn’t listen to MR last night (I no longer listen to AAR), but I am convinced the Gilmartin thing was just a sketch. I remember when Marc went on MR that night, and to me it sounded like Janeane and Sam were just playing along.
:billcat:
I believe that Steve Gilmartin was played by John Crimmings. I listened to the argument and then remembered that I had heard Crimmy for the first time like the previous week or so and I went back and listened to that and I’m pretty sure it’s the same person. We know Dan and Brendan’s voice too well for them to have played the exec although it did sound like Paschman for a bit there.
Janeane and Sam were totally playing along.
Thanks for the :yinyang: π
wow. so it was just a sketch. boy, marc is one hell of an actor. he really had me convinced.
Gilmartin was a sketch. Listen to the opening of the Friday show.
:sdavid::menorah::sdavid:
Holidays, People!
Where’s my Nixon emoticon?
Hey bascombe! Shouldn’t you be over on Laura Flanders’s blog? Causing trouble?
Goddamn lurkers! :ear:
:om: Happy Boxer Day!:40:
Foggyblue, did you hear the show when Mick Foley was on and Dan Paschman called in as a conservative and challenged Marc to a fight? So Dan “comes over” to the studio only to find he has to fight Mick Foley and gets his ass kicked. It was pretty good, I was totally fooled on that one and that’s why I was immediately suspicious when Gilmartin showed up. Marc’s gonna have to get pretty clever to fool us us again.
I don’t know how to pull quotes on this son of a gun, but I want to comment about Danny stoolshit Lizz and the comedy innovations on AAR, patience and Morning Submission becoming #1 had D Stoolshit the patience to let events proceed.
My hunch is that Lizz was let go because she refused to toe his new party line. Unfiltered, although a great show, was not getting picked up by affiliates. Thus, DG had justification–not that he was right–to cancel the show.
Lizz was probably not happy with the weekend show offer, ala Chuck D. She may have also argued that the network should do a better job of getting affiliates to pick up UF. It was a great show. All fell on pig-headed ears. So she quit.
Yes, I agree that Morning Sedition would have become a huge success. Making Big Radio Stars out of much of the cast. Goldbalm realized this. And that’s why he killed the show. He feared that the show would somehow challenge his executive power. Can’t have that in the corporate world. Command and obey.
Who’s fucking idea was it to hire DG? Did anyone sense the bewildered tone of Janeane and Sam last night, when they were pondering why the Lizz-inspired comedy is being squeezed out of AAR programming in favor of news programming?
Holiday Vigilance!
:sdavid::menorah::sdavid:
Don’t forget to light the second candle tonight.
Dan Paschman was the conservative who challenged Marc to a fight? why doesn’t anyone ever tell me these things! i remember the fight, the silences in between scraping chairs, it was scary and it was all very real. or not. now I find out!

I think you’re right Hatebuzz. I was listening to an old show yesterday and it had a segment called something like Ask Dan Paschman, where you could email him a question and he would advise you on the Paschman way of doing things. And now I can’t remember his very practical advice right now. It was funny though, I wonder how i missed it and why it didn’t last.
Bring back Nixon!:peace: This peace icon cuts the mustard not.

Has anyone checked out the KTLK site? Isn’t that where Maron is supposed to develop his new comdy show? My question is, where will the station put him? Weekdays are pretty much filled. Weekends? Syndicated, ala Tyger Thom?
Can anyone shine a light?
May the good lord shine a light on you.

I actually got NO Chinese gifts. A local church had a little Fair Trade boutique where we bought presents for each other. I went crazy trying to find a friggin’ sweatshop free bike helmet – but I succeeded! The brand is Louis Garneau – they’re made in Canada – Yaaaay Canada!
Continuing to vote with my wallet….
XM Radio announced this morning that the AAR channel will stop airing Alan Colmes show (he’s moving to another channel) and in its place air Mike Malloy’s show live (instead of continuing to force us to hear Malloy’s show on tape three hours late). π
The change in XM schedule for the AAR channel will be January 2.
Isn’t that the date that the new Air America Morning show is supposed to begin?
I wonder if that’s the magical date for the start of Marc’s new show, too??? β
A lot depends on how long of a show Marc gets. They already delay Randi, MR, and Malloy, so they could pretty easily push MR back an hour or two and put Marc in there. Or, dump Ed Schultz and run Randi and MR live, and put Marc in for three hours from 7 – 10 Pacific. I think the plan is to have a daily show on KTLK, and then syndicate it to anybody that’ll buy it, and probably put a “best of” together to run on AAR on the weekends (ala Hartmann). Of course we won’t know until they actually make a deal. Let’s just hope it doesn’t fall through (I don’t trust these radio people).
Dump Ed Schultz! I love that Idea!:nixon::nixon:Thank You for resurrecting Nixon!:nixon:

Good for you Stacey! Every year it seems like my relatives are coming around a little more on stuff like this. Maybe, rather than starting political arguments at the dinner table, we can persuade others to purchase from companies that support liberal causes. People who know my feelings about Wal-Mart  will not only NOT shop for me there, they will occasionally let me know that they INTENTIONALLY avoided shopping there.
It’s kinda like water eroding a rock in some cases, but a little progress is certainly better than none at all.
:kinara:
Yep, I always consult Buy Blue before I buy anything. I haven’t set foot in Wal-Mart in years, I try not to buy anything from Home Depot, I don’t do Amazon anymore, and Blockbuster can kiss my ass.
Hopefully your relatives are honest with you Kevin. One time my step monster tricked me into buying something at Sam’s CLub when I didn’t realize it’s owned by Walmart. Sneaky bitch!:rant1:
I am listening to the Friday December 23rd Majority Report. Intriguing stuff with Crispin Miller. Can’t wait for the Lamar stuff.
Circulate those tapes!:nixon:
FYI: I just saw where Danny Goldberg has 2 posts at HuffingtonPost.com. One dated 9/28/05 re: right wing media and one dated recently 12/12/05 on the ACLU. I would hate to see him have a regular forum.
Boycotts are good, but they rarely accomplish much. Create alternatives. Patronize co-ops. Don’t worry so much if you accidentally shop Wal-Mart. Support their workers in an organizing drive.
Circulate those Morning Sedition Tapes!:nixon: (Get me a master copy!:omg:)
I didn’t find DG’s posts on Huffington offensive; I found them to be fairly standard liberal boilerplate. What did you find that was so bad, isi?:alc:
I find the fact that someone gives DG a place to voice his opinion about anything anytime he wants to offensive. He’s a phony. He showed his phony-ness in the way he treated Marc Maron.
I think that if you looked a little, you’d find that a lot of these liberals are phonies. They talk a good game, but watch out when theirinterests are threatened from the left.
:nixon:Tapes:nixon:
“These liberals?”
Wait a minute. Some of my best friends are liberals.:omg:
Oh shit, Akron is losing 13-3 at the half. Looks like my alma mater with the stupidest nickname in collegiate sports isn’t going to enjoy the thrill of postseason victory.
It’s Zips. There will now be a brief pause so that those of you reading this thread can laugh your asses off. I didn’t choose the name, I just went there. :crap:
:sdavid::menorah::menorah::sdavid:
Don’t forget.
NickiRose, when you kept posting “Where’s my Nixon?”, I thought you meant a morning bowel movement. Really!
I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Kinky Friedman. Kinky used to have a band in the 1970’s called The Texas Jewboys; they were irreverent and nuts in the glorious way the Maron and Earl are nuts. (In They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anyore, a cowboy who has never seen a Jew before says, “I had you lamped for a slightly anemic, well-dressed country nigger.”)
After a long bout with “Peruvian Marching Powder”, Kinky sobered up and wrote a series of off-the-planet detective novels which take place in the Hill Country of Texas and Greenwich Village. Now he’s running for Governor of Texas, and thousands of rabid fans are turning out for his no-bulshit speeches. He’s running as an independent; he’s so plain-spoken that the standard political smooth talk from the Dems and Repubs sounds just greasy by comparison. And Billy Joe Shaver is his spiritual advisor! (When I get to heaven, Jesus is gonna kick my ass. I just know it. BJS)
Back to the topic at hand, Nixon. Kinky always refers to a bowel movement as “taking a Nixon”. So that’s what I thought you were hoping for…as we all do.
JP
:menorah::menorah:
It’s time.

I might say “Take a Reagan.” I really hated that bastard. When he took power, I thought we were headed for Nazi Nationhood in the USA. I couldn’t believe that people could fall for that psyche-job. I was young and naive then.

Akron Zips! :rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:
Am I the only one here right now? Crap. I hate that I can’t participate from work. Of course, I wouldn’t get any *work* done, so I guess there’s wisdom in that.
I’ve got a few comments, but I’m going to go in separate posts, as I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. π
Look out, Non Sequitors a-comin’!!
Let’s say, “6 – 12 slot” sucks. Jerry Springer belongs on talk stations right after Rush. JS seems to be instructing listeners on The Truth, and is much too simplistic for the serious Liberal Listener. Syndicate him, and let him straighten out the Right Wing Wackos.
Citizenkahn, do you have a variation for apple? An old Polish neighbor used to make Apple Latkes, and they were just wonderful!
I’m not much of a cook (ask my husband!), but I’d think a strict substitution of apple for potato would work vis-a-vis consistency, but perhaps not for taste.
Ideas?
My family used to roll their eyes and smirk when I’d go off on Dubya and the State of the United States. It’s since become obvious I was paying attention, and they weren’t. Now, they can contribute to the rant themselves. And I roll my eyes and smirk. Fondly.
It’s good to know you’re not alone. And good to know “I told you so” can be unspoken and still heard.
(One of) My college alma mater(s) has the nickname of “geoduck”. Anybody know what a geoduck looks like?:40:
If you use apple I would think you would have to treat it like an onion and use a large grate and then squeeze the juice out of the pulp before you mix it with everyone else. Which means you will need a lot more apple than you would use potatos because of the water content.
mix it with everTHING else.Is what I meant to say. I used to know a girl that refered to her hair as “them”.
“Did you get your hair cut?”
“Yes, I got them cut.”
Sounds like a “translation” problem, like she was mentally translating from some other language into English.
When I first learned how to tell time, I’d tell people it was “5 minutes before 6:30”, or “4 minutes past quarter of”. It’d drive my mom nuts. Later, when I tried to teach myself German, I found that same system of telling time in some German book. I don’t think it’s universal, though, because a later German teacher said she never heard of such a thing. π
The first time I heard him, I thought I had gotten Rush by mistake! I can’t stand him. And I can’t figure out why *he* is on Armed Forces Radio!
Hey Kristapea:
The Pashman advice was called “Pashman Rules.” Again, I think I know far too much MS trivia. It’s probably why the cancellation of MS has caused such emotional trauma and such a hole in my life. Pashman dished out the fundamental information about getting enough of the best hors douvres, and the proper way to get your fill at a buffet.
Yes, Jan 2 for the new AAR lineup. And if MM’s show also starts at that time (although he mentioned “end of the month” whatever that means), I’m sure he’s been busy working out a format, and writing material. I do hope some of the old characters can come along for the ride. I wish Lawton could do some guest shots.
But it seems that some of the best characters have developed from news stories, like Angus MacFarquar. We can’t know what gems may be unearthed in the future.
Funny isn’t it? Two weeks ago, I was despondent over the end of MS (Danny Goldberg took my shoe!), and then Marc’s email came, and time passed, and a light showed up at the end of the tunnel. Better times are comin’! I can’t wait!
Hey, Phoener.
Just finished cleaning up after myself (latkes, of course), but I saw your post about the apples. The potatoes make a lot of liquid; you’d be surprised how much. I’m gonna ponder this after I’ve gotten some sleep and will report back soon!
:menorah:
Yes Hatebuzz, you do know too much. π Maybe you should make a Morning Sedition combination board/trivia game on the computer.
This may have been touched on above, but here’s the quote.
From http://www.radioink.com/HeadlineEntry.asp?hid=131509&pt=todaysnews
Wouldn’t it have been easier, Danny Douchebag, to just have left MS alone, and given Springer the heave-ho?
Even though I am excited about Maron’s opportunities this coming year, I am still seething over this *#^@)$^ decision.
DG could have left MS alone, and kept Springer. Springer liked having Morning Sedition as a lead-in. I do like the idea of syndicating JS. Put him up against Hannity in some markets.

Air America is hanging by a thread with me. I’m in wait and see mode. As long as Marc and friends have a show I’ll listen, but they really ruined the momentum the show was gaining. It’s so sad. But I have faith that Marc is nimble enough to pick it up again. But, since I will no longer have an AAR affiliate here in Phoenix, I will have nothing to listen to in the car and so I won’t be able to keep up throughout the day anymore.
Same here. Philly never had a worthwhile affiliate, so it’s been impossible to listen at home.

Dear PJ:
What the hell is :om:?
Amen and Halleleuah to that Hatebuzz
I got satellite radio to listen to Air America Radio eleven months ago. Since this whole thing with MS has come down, I find myself really reluctant to listen to AAR much. For the last week I’ve been listening to the African American Talk Station “The Power” on XM Radio and am really happy with it.
I worry that once Marc has his new show in LA that I won’t be able to hear it. I’ll be happy for him and his career but I think I’ll be left by the wayside.
That is from Islam silly, but I have no idea what it means
:om: is Om.
There will be podcastes Foggyblue, that’s how many of us in the west have had to listen to MS. Now it’s your turn.
Is THAT how that’s spelled:om:
Just erased a long message to you folks becasue I don’t knopw what’s appropriate or not. In a nut shell, I took care of my 96.5 years old mother for three days to give her caregiver time off, bought clothes for my daughter while my mother was sleeping, chatted with old friends who stopped by or called (everyone supported the strike), and just got home.
It was great to get the latke recipes, the reminders to light the candles, and to know that the blog is blogging along and growing. I love all the new little whatever they are called–emoticons? Please leave them all of them up.

My father-in-law died yesterday so I have to fly to Pittsburgh tomorrow. I won’t get there in time for the funeral, but I will be there for the burial on Wednesday. My husband’s family is pretty religious so I am surprised that they are not following the 24 hour rule. I wonder if Chanukah has something to do with it or if it is just because the family plot is north of Pittsburgh. I couldn’t get there earlier because my sister is in Honduras and I could not get any one to care for my mother until her caregiver returned.
I hope I’ll have computer access while I’m away, but if not, all the best in the coming year! I’m staying up to watch Conan tonight.
By the way, I turned on AAR, on 1190, the home station. Didn’t last more than 15 minutes.
Kristapea, Is Phoenix giving up on AAR. I think the Rochester station may be doing so. All I seem to hear these days is sports :rant1:, Stephanie Miller and Big Al :crap:
:fire::fire::fire:
Dani, my heart goes out to your husband and to you. I know what a sad time it is, and coming at this time of year makes it that much more difficult. My folks have been gone for quite a while now, and it really helped me to know that there were people who cared. Though we have never “met,” you have an extended family out here who care about you, and know what you and your family are feeling. Whatever else, you’re not alone. Peace to you, your husband, and both your families.

OK, WebHT β I replied to your post back on the week-end thread. I’m delighted to see that I’m not the only one to pick up Goldsnot’s Lizz jones. I hate that bossman attitude, that demand that underlings curtsy and grovel and laugh at all his awful jokes (yeah, I’m projecting, so what?) and pretend his ideas are good. How much did Goldberg invest in order to call the shots? Just askin’.
