As we contemplate the fact that Morning Sedition will soon come to an end, we mark the anniversary of an even sadder event; John Lennon was murdered 25 years ago tonight.
I find it inconceivable that’s it’s been so long. God, I was young then, and going on my second college. It was a Monday night, as I recall. Some of the guys were watching the football game in one of the lounges, but I wasn’t particularly interested in the teams that night, so I was in my room listening to the radio when they came on and gave us the news. I walked down the hall to break the news, and just after I did so, Howard Cosell announced to the Monday Night Football world that John Lennon was dead. He was 40 years old.
It was even sadder, because John had just returned to making music again; Mark David Chapman has deprived us of 25 years of what I’m certain would have been great music, humor, and insight. The world needs you John – now, more than ever.
