The vote to invoke cloture will begin shortly. 60 votes are required to end debate, and if that happens Alito will likely be confirmed tomorrow morning. However the vote goes, it isn’t an end; just a beginning. In the coming weeks and months, we need to work to remove those traitorous Democrats and faux moderate Republicans from office, and reward those who stood up for the right to privacy, and rejection of the imperial presidency.
We’ve made our voices heard. The politicians and talking heads aren’t too crazy about our little peasant uprising. They aint seen nothin’ yet.
I wish Frist would just shut the fuck up already.
He looks like a pedophile funeral director.
thank you for stating it so clearly, i am so fed up with the cowardice and gameplaying of the democrats, we should start calling tomorrow and let them know how little they can count on us, both in terms of votes and money…..i’ll start sending the fund raising letters back addressee unknown…..
C-span seems to be experiencing streaming problems as 20 million Americans tune in from all over the land,
Here’s the vote.
DU just went to members only mode.. thats like 2 million connections/minute or more
Seems to be some sort of preliminary vote. Is Rockefeller a dem or a reponazi?Voted Y on cloture (I believe).
Not good. Rockefeller, Bingaman, Landrieu, Byrd.
Nelson of Florida. Well, this looks to be over.
Stop depending solely on the system’s stale, big money-dominated, parliamentary system. See how our elected officials do not listen to us?
OUT in THE STREETS!
FUCK Lieberman!!!!!!!!!
I cannot say that strongly enough!
It looks like some of the uncomitted dems who might have voted no voted yes as it became more evident the vote was not going to be even close.
Did I hear that whore Cantwell vote “aye!”
Jesus H. Tapd-Dancing Christ!:omg:
well since the C-span website seems to have crashed…i’m watching the tv and running over to my computer like a mad woman….:growl::fustrate:
It is SO FUCKING obvious that we the people don’t matter to these jokers. I’m with you, NickiRose: To the streets!
Awwww, do I HAVETA?
This is sounding worse and worse. :yuck:
You know, this betrayal by Dems is not new. In fact, it is how the corporate-dominated system is driven. Taft-Hartley Act. Check out the vote.
Bankruptcy bill…FreeperAlito.
Opus Dei Dominates!:omg:
Well, we now will have a list of people to work for, and against. They need to pay for stabbing us in the back.

Pray for an Act of God.
Smite that Dirty Fucker!
Well, at least we know that they KNEW what the people wanted…what theyre doing is for their own political expediency, though Im sure theyre telling themselves that its for our own good….
Don’t just call their offices; STORM THEIR OFFICES!:omg:
Well, Lieberman is from my state and this is his hometown. I decided long ago to work against him…I doubt I can even do anything with the local dem office here because I so deplore him…he isnt even a dem…hes a joke!
Cantwell voted AYE on Alito? What the F*CK is that all about?
was it just my imagination or did they try to put Harry Reid down as aye??
i heard his name twice and finally they put him down for a No…madness
Can it be any more clear: WE DO NOT LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY!:omg:
Paass awaay you NAZI Opus Dei freepers!:omg:
Anyone have a good supply of wine bottles and rags ??
It will happen again! Get a clue, Young Turks!
WE CAN”T WAIT! PROTEST TOMORROW!
Protest REGULARLY. DEMAND DEMOCRACY! :nixon:
I am drinking from a big jug of chianti.:40:
The Media is not balanced. Stop recycling the lessons you should have learned in the 1980s. “Manufacturing Consent.”:omg:
Do we have a final count yet ?? Looked like it was 20 something to 70 something.
Why would any of these dems vote to silence their own side? Its just an issue of letting the debate go on…but they know that if the debate goes on they will have to face the facts of this thing….idiots….
fred, i think the fellow Seditionists wouldn’t mind drinking bottles of wine if it’s for the revolution…:40:
Jill reported that Cantwell’s office is being flooded with calls. Flood her offices with protesters, too. That will be effective!:omg:
Can’t get through to see the role call, Was it that bad? 70/20. I’m sick. who are the creeps who abandoned us?
No vote tally up on C-SPAN yet, but I didn’t hear nearly enough nay votes.
Only 20 no on cloture votes? WHAT THE FUCK!:omg:
Hey melina. Dems fear activism. They voted cloture to shut up our activism! Street protests scare the hell out of them. For some reason, aye on cloture voters believe that this will dampen the activism. Prove them wrong!
OUT IN THE FUCKING STREETS!:omg::mad:THIS IS THE BEGINNING!
IMPEACH one of those NAZIS on SCOTUS! Impeach all of them!
Recall how big the early anti-Iraq war demonstrations were. Then, we allowed the Move-on types subsume our movements into the presidential campaign. The result: No more demonstrations! Kerry was pro-war! Dems did not fight back when the Republican machine stole the election.
LESSON:…..
72 – 25
what the fuck!!!!
What was the Bankruptcy Bill vote tally? Nearly half of the dems are not with the people. Typical.
Don’t rely merely on electoral strategies. Phonecalls and e-mails are not enough to stop this descent into hell we are experiencing.:growl:
what the hell is this DeMint talking about!!:fustrate:
I woke up this morning thinking that I had to buy Howard Zinn’s A People’s History. These are dark days, but we have had them before. In the other Gilded Era, the Supreme Court became an instrument of the hard right, as it is becoming now, but gradually, the Progressive Movement grew to such strength that it had an effect on the previously useless Democratic Party. It can happen again.
I”ve been thinking about the suffragettes, and abolitionists: god, they suffered such wretched defeats, but still kept going.
Somehow we have to wake up the people. I don’t know how it can happen, but it is time to take collective action. Our representative democracy is seriously broken.
I doubt that the republicratic dems have any idea the fury that is coursing through the country right now. And it’s not just aimed at the creepy Frist and Company. Joseph Lieberman and friends: we mean you!:growl::growl::growl:
Once I get the official tally of who voted what way, I’ll put up an official “hit” list of those Senators that need to be targeted in the next election. Joe Lieberman is an obvious one, and their are others as well. I’m particularly pissed at those who intend to vote no on confirmation, but voted yes on cloture. That’s a hypocritical vote, and they need to be made to pay for it. Those who voted against cloture should all abstain tomorrow, and let the pathetic loser “no” votes of the traitors stand out.
http://www.c-span.org/congress/alito_senate.asp
This is the intentions of the Senators as known right now. The cloture vote tally isn’t up yet.
Every time the left looses no matter how hard we try it becomes more and more obvious that the wait until next time philosophy is a joke.. The way this is going under Bush there may well not be a next time.
This time when you call your senators office to voice your extreme displeasure remember to turn the caller ID on your phone off and if their switchboard accepts calls with no ID voice your “real” opinion.
CNN is reporting on its homepage that the filibuster was defeated 72-25
Hey! Here’s a choice in our democracy: Senate Race in Florida,
“Yes on Cloture” Nelson versus Katherine “Enough Said” Harris.
:omg:
Well, I have to go get my shit together to go sit through a three-hour class. That will be tougher than usual tonight, I’m afraid. At least it’s warm evening.
Boxer is speaking on the floor
Didn’t Justice Kennedy vote with the other scoundrels to give the election to Bush?

Give these fuckers Hell!!!!

THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED. CALL THEM, EMAIL THEM, FUCK THEM:jerk:
kennedy and o’connor both did.
This just sucks…I dont think they realize how serious this is across America. Does anyone know how Dodd voted?
hey, I just got a phone survey done by a robot. It stated that Rep Shays agrees with Bush’s wiretapping. Then it asked me if I agree with wiretapping. The it asked me if I thought that Shays would get reelected….heh heh…Thats all it asked. Maybe because I went to the town meeting with him and I filled out the info card…or maybe because hes just worried because Dianne Farrell did so well last time.
I really think that the mid terms are ours…of course it will be many, many years before we get the supreme court back in any way. It really sucks that O’conner couldnt wait another 3 years but her husband has alzheimers, I think, and he doesn thave long. I dont knwo why she didnt just take a leave for a year or somehting.

Anti Capitalist Strategy
Opening Presentation by Michael Albert for A Debate on Anti Capitalist Strategy (with John Holloway)
by Michael Albert; January 26, 2006
A viable and desirable strategy for transcending capitalism will certainly include leaving capitalism behind. Capitalism is despicable.
It will also include, however, attaining something worthwhile in capitalism’s place. What we win must be desirable.
Leaving capitalism behind will entail in each country arousing a large portion of the population to struggle.
Winning something worthwhile in capitalism’s place will entail that the large portion of the population seeking change are all equal and active participants, defining what they are seeking and their methods. Something desirable is not imposed from above, but is created from below.
To gain sufficient support to win a new economy will involve, therefore, many battles for better conditions, better circumstances, more income and more say for those who are worst off.
More, all these battles will have to be fought in ways that lead to ever enlarging further struggle for still more gains, rather than in ways that assume that capitalism will last forever and that cause people to settle for less than revolution as the end goal. . .

I know that O’Connor was no moderate. So, actually, as fuckkked as Alito is, he is not That much different from O’Connor.

The Alito Betrayal
Submitted by Bob Fertik on January 30, 2006 – 5:18pm.Sam Alito
We, the voters who elect Democrats in every election, were utterly and completely betrayed today by 17 Democratic Senators that we elected.
Akaka (HI), Baucus (MT), Bingaman (NM), Byrd (WV), Cantwell (WA), Carper (DE), Dorgan (ND), Inouye (HI), Johnson (SD), Kohl (WI), Landrieu (LA), Lieberman (CT), Lincoln (AR), Nelson (FL), Nelson (NE), Rockefeller (WV), Salazar (CO)
There was no reason for this betrayal. We only needed 40 of the 45 Democrats to sustain a filibuster. We could have won even if 5 Democrats who were flat-out stupid enough to believe Alito’s lies (like Robert Byrd and Kent Conrad) had voted against the filibuster.
Every Democratic Senator knew what was at stake – both in the rulings Justice [sic] Alito will make for the rest of his life, and in the anger – even rage – that will greet their decision to betray us.
Well I just emailed Salazar his quarterly “thanks a lot asshole” email. The Dobsonites should be swooning over him in tomorrows letters to the editor.
Hey! Here’s a choice in our democracy: Senate Race in Florida,
“Yes on Cloture” Nelson versus Katherine “Enough Said” Harris.
Comment by NickiRose — January 30, 2006 @ 5:41 pm
Tell me about it. I’m still trying to decide whether to wait until the election to hurl, or do it now and avoid the rush.
What the hell.
:barf:
Word on the street is that Bill Nelson would not support the filibuster for fear that the Repigs would throw it in his face during the campaign. Apparently he is under the impression that they will play nice as a result of his wussification today. Guess again, numb nuts.
And by the way, next time you come calling for money or support, go talk to your buddy Alito, because it won’t be coming from me.
I think Maria Cantwell may have had concerns about this as well. Explains it, but DOESN’T excuse it. In fact, I think I’m more disappointed in her, because I pretty much expected this from Nelson.
And to top it off, I missed Graham Parker on Riley’s show. FUCK!!!
For better or worse, now we know what can happen when our outrage is stoked. A week ago, the pundits laughed at the idea of a filibuster, but we damn near pulled it off.
There can be no more waiting until next time, or choosing your battles. Woe to the Dems who have yet to figure that out.
FUCK ALITO!!!
IMPEACHMENT!!!
VIGILANCE!!!
:fire::fire::fire::fire::fire:
As a reminder that on Feb 4th The World can’t Wait will have a demonstration in DC..

Good time to try out your wine bottle and your rag. Hey…. you might win a free vacation to some far away place too
Well, this is a sad day for America. We will have a right wing ideologue on the US Supreme Court. And, like Kennedy said, so many of the protections for the most vulnerable of our society are going to be eroded. I give credit to Kerry for standing up and Kennedy for his eloquence and passion. And, for democrats that crossed the aisle to vote with the republicans because they feared being defeated in their states, that is no excuse for not standing up for our constitution. None. Byrd could have gone out on a historical note of leading this filibuster and stopping this nomination but in the end he was just a politician that wanted to get elected again. So, don’t tell me he’s the dean of the senate.
This “netroots” campaign was good also for flushing out who at air america is the real deal: Sam Seder, Mike Malloy. I hope we will be able to add Marc Maron to that list soon.
Well, their yellow shines through their blue.
Dan Inouye of Hawaii is a given — remember during the Iran-Contra hearing he kept telling one of the other Seantors to be quiet when he began questioning the traitorous Marine about stuff that was getting too close to the bone? When Inouye defended Ollie North I knew he was no good.
I am soooo disappointed in sooo many dems today. This will be remembered. I am making a list of those who betrayed the People and those who listened to the People and I’m going to post it on my wall. Maybe I will send a couple of dollars to the opponents of the Betrayers and to the Listeners.
Ron Wyden got burned by Roberts about Oregon’s Death With Dignity act – what a surprise.
Kent Conrad said that Alito told him “face to face” that he (Alito) did not believe in a an all powerful Executive. And that Conrad took him at his word. HIS WORD? How about his writings and decisions? A lawyer ho tells his client to ignor the words on a contract and to tak the words of the other party because he is a good guy and promised me everything is OK is either a fool or a criminal. That behavior is unethical, and would result in disbarment if from an attorney — criminal from a United States Senator.
Who is more reprehensible: Chickenhawks who know what they want and take it by force or “liberals” who roll over on their backs and piss on themselves (and us) like puppies?
Hey Zeb! Haven’t seen you lately.
So now what?

…What you guys accomplished the last week was amazing –the outpouring of emails, letters, faxes, and phone calls was unprecedented for the netroots and particularly surprising given how weak our issue groups organized against Alito. We should’ve played a supporting role to strong efforts by NARAL, People for the American Way, and others. Instead, we ended up being pretty much the entire effort…
…So we are now on the map. The Alito vote may have fizzled, but you better believe the Dem establishment knows we exist…
Hey Kristapea — I’ve been on deadline…and seething offline. I may have to go pick up Nicki and go protest someplace. (We make a scary looking pair — wild-eyed young artist and wild-eyed old fart.)
Yeah, Fred, I hear Gitmo is beautiful this time of year!
A pair to change hearts and minds.:rofl2:
Okay, gotta go get my money’s worth at the studio now.
Sure is quiet…they must have started rounding us up already. (nervous laugh)
We “rescued” the Germans from the horrors of the Third Reich; there is no one out there to rescue us. Gotta’ do it ourselves…
malloy is going ballistic. how I do love that man.:love::love::love: he’s completely slamming the dems; :spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank: it so satisfying.:nod::nod:
he doesn’t think that online organizing did any good. he thinks the only hope is to get these senators out of office.
I’m not sure if I agree with his pessimism about online organizing (but I’m getting awfully tired of celebrating how close we came to almost getting something accomplished and congratulating ourselves on how we shook people up.) but I’m not sure how we can get them out of office, with our current campaign finance system.
but there’s an awful lot of furious liberals around the country right now, and that’s good. :growl::growl::rant1::rant1::rant1:
Alito is a federalist, free market fascist. At least Mussolini had social programs–so did Adolph.:omg:
Like a dummy, I’ve been posting over at the Monday thread! for the past 20 minutes. Sean was over there, too. Wow, Malloy said he is done with the democratic party. And, there will be ice water in hell before he gives money to a democrat. He said the next time we get an urge to sign an on-line petition we need to break our wrist! He also said the next time we get control of the House it will be in …maybe 2022!
Malloy, kickin’ ass and takin’ names!
We just have to support individual candidates. That’s the only way I can think to start getting on the right track. All these vets coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq could make good candidates in the future as some already have. We have to support or fight individual acts if it comes down to it. Like Kerry coming out to filibuster. I am so mad at him for conceding the election too soon but this act has redeemed him a little bit. Now I have to keep an eye on him. And Al Gore. It’s looking like people are starting to forgive him for conceding the election too soon because a lot of people semm to want to see him run in 2008. He has been pretty firey since this regime has proven to be totally inept and corupt and I am finding him very inspiring. It seems stupid that he should have to run for the office that he WON in the first place but maybe he has more redeeming to do.
Old Zeb,
Send your message to Ed Schultz. He quoted Conrad’s face-to-face comment too many times today. You make a good point. Tell him at wegoted.com. I will too if that is ok with you. ES kept telling us what a good guy Conrad is, what good friends they are, and how he will continue to contribute to his campaigns. :barf:
I am disgusted and furious. Only positive note today was a supportive email from Hillary.
We get Lionel inatead of Malloy. Does anyone else get him? I forgot to listen. I was too busy catching up on the work I didn’t do today because I was on the phone. That this country is making 1984 and that the majority of people are oblivious terrifies me.
Malloy said his first thought after Woodruff and his camerman photojournalist got blown up was that the son of a bitch Negraponte got another one.
I meant making 1984 into a reality scares the hell outof me. Years ago my father, a survivor of the Holocaust, warned me that this would happen.
I have emailed imploringly to friends and relatives about this but I think they just don’t understand what a sharp right turn we’re about to make. Women,
minorities and the Constitution will fly out of the windows as our country squeals and tips up on 2 wheels as it reels around a sharper curve than the one that killed that one Beach Boy, Dead Man’s Curve? They JUST don’t understand!:doh:
Go for it DrD — I’ve been tring to phone Big Eddie since I heard that comment live.
A friend’s mother is in her 80s and from Italy. Her husband was in one of the camps for those who would not fight. She is horrified by what she is seeing: She has seen it once before. Her husband died a few years ago:

Hey, Zeb, I’ve seen you and Nicky together and…DAYUM, you scared me!
My mother is still trying to figure out how we managed to lose the whole debate thing. All those years she spent as a lefty’s lefty and she can’t make sense out of what’s happening to our government today.
I’m consoling myself by listening to my brand-:spank:ing new “Tickets Still Available” CD. I miss Marc. I need to hear him tomorrow morning. 🙁
Well, blog sibs, it’s bed time for those of us who have to wake up way earlier than necessary… Type at you tomorrow. And I’ll get caught up with the recipes this week. (I went into the old archives and managed to copy about fifteen of them so I’ve got a good start going…)
Okay, seditionistas, I think we all need to buy these.

I find this report by Martha Raddatz disturbing in that they believe this was a bomb that had to be set off by remote detonator. The only two seriously wounded were the journalists. Sounds like whoever did it targeted the journalists.

The people I’ve talked to said that convoy had — had jammers in it. It’s called the warlock system, which would have detected or set off anything with a wireless signal that would set off that bomb, so they believe this bomb was actually wired probably underground and detonated remotely through that wire instead of wirelessly.
So, when it hit that Bob and Doug were exposed in the back. There was an Iraqi soldier who was in a front hatch. He was also injured but no life-threatening injuries. I think his hand was badly injured and Bob and Doug in the back.
