As president bunnypants swaggers into the SOTU address tonight, trying his best to look like a triumphant Caesar, here’s some things to keep in perspective.
Osama bin Laden is still out there, and the real brains of Al Qaeda – Ayman al-Zawahiri – showed up in a new video yesterday, (looking alive and quite well) to taunt our “war president,” calling him a “failure” in the war on terror, and a “butcher” for killing innocent Pakistanis. Republicans in Congress want Bush to come clean on his Abramoff connections (and more show up every day). The traditional media had one two of their own seriously wounded in Iraq, as Jill Carroll was begging for her life on videotape. Bush’s buddy Kenny-boy Lay’s trial began yesterday, and we’re all still waiting for the other shoe to drop on Karl Rove. Gas prices are up, deficit estimates are up even higher, Bush’s approval ratiings remain in the toilet, and trotting out that tired old “nine-won-won” chestnut doesn’t seem to be working anymore.
So, watch the SOTU tonight if you can stand it (I know I can’t; the feeling of embarassment is just oo much for me), but don’t bother with the traditional media spin. They’ll just drive you nuts.
First? Let it be so.
The list of traitors in the Senate and the year in which their term is up … It would appear quite a few have maybe committed suicide.

Beat the Clock
Nothing like a failed filibuster to find out who your friends are. 🙁
sorry isi, i didn’t see this before on the other thread:
Zeb,
Wrote to Ed Schultz last night, and think everyone should to follow up on all that you pointed out to us re: the worthlessnes of words and the need to get it in writing, as we already have from A.
At times Ed gets defensive if bloggers get on his case for not getting it right; other times he listens. Yesterday a caller informed him about Roberts’ big lie re: the the right to die. He thanked the caller for the info wbich he and his staff had not put together–even called it the best call of the day.
Let’s wake “Big Ed” aout Conrad. It’s great that Conrad voted against the war, but he abandoned us yesterday on a verbal promise. Duh  If we all write to Ed Schultz maybe he will talk loud enough for Conrad and others to hear.
Hey, Farmerkat and Fred and everybody. I just heard Marc on an ad for his new show. How great to hear him again….
I’m pissed off and disappointed about Alito. 👿
oooh! oooh! If I missed a previous post, sorry, but Marc’s promo-ing the new show on Mark’s morning show. (Meaning there’s a short:banana: recorded spot with the old theme music.) Makes sense for those not on the Internets. Wonder how many stations he starts with…
I ordered Marc’s new CD just a few days ago and got it yesterday. That’s the quickest I’ve ever gotten anything not sent by FedEx! Haven’t listened to it yet….
Oh, well. Now that the Demothugs have shown their true colors it is time to start building an alternative party. The Demo-anythings have proved themselves to be a laughing stock. After yesterday I don’t see any future for the party. If they can’t even mount an argument against two SCOTUS justices who have ruled their entire careers against the American people is a condemnation against a spineless, leaderless, agendaless party that can’t even blow its own nose without help. Simply pathetic. So much for democracy…
i quit:!:
:alc::alc::alc::alc::alc::alc::alc::alc::alc::alc::alc::alc:
why did i even wake up last night?
:bow:please dont hurt me imperial masters
It’s hard not to quit…I gotta hand it to you all for still keeping up with everything and caring. In the last few months, I’ve sort of given up…but I’m trying to fight it! I don’t want to be a :sheep:
hey i can get drunk and drive off a cliff!!!!!
From firedoglake:
Getting drunk and driving off a cliff is NOT a good career move.
:rofl2::rofl2:
Yeah Sean.. I have noticed a lot of truckers listening to AAR on their satellite radios. I wonder how you guys keep from thinking of big luxury SUV’s as targets.
the christo-fascist zombie brigade worked for decades to get scalito on the bench.
:fire: WE MUST HAVE LONGEVITY AND CONTINUE THE FIGHT! :fire:
Shit, we all knew Leibermann would vote with the rethugs.
re Marc’s CD.
So I ordered it using paypal but there wasn’t any place to put in my order information. I emailed Marc and phoned the manager..No one has gotten back to me. I paid, but will I ever see my CD?
Forlorn I am. 😥
wasn’t it marc who said “Liebermann is Yiddish for Republican”? Can’t remember who…
And can I just say how enraged I am that Exxon made 36 billion dollars in profit last year? I’m sitting here in a chilly house with the thermostat set on 60 because last month’s natural gas bill was so high.
If you want to continue the fight you must find someone who will actually fight. We don’t have that in the Senate and no viable candidates to run against the conservative hate machine. At all levels. The right has the people cowed.
Farmerkat, I used PayPal and my address “autofilled” when I put in my log-in information. Yours didn’t do that? I’ll make you a copy if you don’t get it. Is that illegal? 😀
Mr. Farmerkat has to go back to the sandbox soon, did you say? I know you must not be too happy about that….
Becky, what I found in further insulting regarding Exxon:
[Keep the profits and make the taxpayer pay the losses.]
Every time you come up with a good candidate it costs so much to keep the rethug slime off him/her that they never have enough money to get there message out.
The way the media distorted the Dems opposition to the Alito nomination was also appalling.
Why people would give so much power to corporations is beyond me! Corporations are about nothing except money and power…just like our government these days.
:fustrate:
As bummed as I was last night when I posted on the cloture thread…
I looked in my mailbox and three little words smiled back at me…
Tickets
Still
Available.
I GOT THE FUNNY!!! :banana::banana::banana:
Sorry, Rachel, but I won’t be listening to you today. I needs me the funny. Between Alito and the speech tonight, I have to laugh or all I’ll do is cry. Marc, your timing is exquisite.
Not to mention that if the comedy thing doesn’t work out, you have a bright future in retail distribution. I can’t believe how fast this thing arrived! Cool.
Good to turn on Riley’s show this morning and hear Cindy. Weird that six months ago no one knew who she was, and now I recognize her voice immediately.
But why is Riley playing excerpts from last night’s 24? Those of us who watched it already heard them, and those who didn’t probably don’t give a shit. Is this Goldberg’s idea of building an audience?
Hey Sean, don’t get drunk and drive off a cliff. Okay, at least don’t drive off a cliff. :rofl2:
As long as you have a corporatist administration the people will have less and less of a say in whether corporations are punished for their indiscretions.
I guess its just going to be a continuum of well at least they didn’t come for me.
If Howie expects the grass roots to support his candidates he is going to have to keep the rethugs from spraying their Dem be gone all over the middle class.
Thanks Becky. But I figure if I don’t hear anything about the CD, I’ll call Marc when his new show starts and bug him. :billcat:
Yep, he leaves Thurs. night. I’ll tell him you asked about him. They showed on tee vee last night the “Buffalo” which is supposed to withstand IED’s. He said the IED’s now are too strong even for those damned things. lovely.
If Howie expects the grass roots to support his candidates
Fred, I was so ticked off yesterday, I phoned the DNC. I got Howie’s office and asked why I should continue with my Democracy Bond and not just support individual candidates. The gal was really great. She said I could certainly do that. she said Howie was very much opposed to Alito and in favor of the filibuster, but unfortunately, he can’t vote. She said the DNC under Howie is spending almost all their money on building the party at the ground-up in each state. Very little goes toward candidates at this point. She said Howie believes that is where we need to focus. I agree with that.
Can’t wait for one of those anti-Dems to email asking for help on an issue…screw ’em. :spank:
All the mail I get from the DNC starts out describing all their great ideas and ends with please give..
The people who should be democrats are those who are least able to give. That’s why they are attracted to the rethug line of low buck government.. hell let the corporations pay for everything.. little do they know
Anybody out there going to do the chat or IRC thing during the SOTU tonight? I was thinking about using the Young Turks site at http://www.youngturk.com/chat/chat.html
I just heard the Maron show announcement on XM radio in between Rachel’s swooshes.
Hey, Kevin! I’m going to listen to the Marc CD on the way to work…should help with my road rage. 😡
I was thinking about going to a UPJ drunk they are having tonight. One of the local brew pubs is donating the beer and at 7000 feet,,, 😮 if I chicken out I will get into Hartman’s chat.. They usually listen to Bob Kinkade.
Pashman and Ferucci had good bits on Randi’s show yesterday. The first half-hour of her show yesterday has little to do with politics but is sustained hilarious. It’s taken a few years but the more I listen to her the more I appreciate her style and convictions.
good morning everyone. i am listening to rachel’s show on xm radio and i just heard marc’s voice doing a NEW promo for his NEW show! he said something like, hey everybody, this is marc maron coming to you soon on air america radio with my new show from los angeles where my cats are doing fine, thank you for asking.
or something like that. :banana::banana::nixon::cake:
The Hartmann chat was my alternative, but that one requires a registration. Heck, I will open two chats and see which one is more active.
http://www.thomhartmann.com/chat.shtml
I guess the Young Turks chat was broken the last couple of days. Hartman’s chat had over a hundred in there last night.. That makes it way to busy.
Foggyblue, I think you are dreaming.
Just kidding.
Maron had the Chili Peppers theme going too!
i wanna hear the ad!
WHubbleT, it is early, 4:32 a.m., maybe i was dreaming.
usually i turn off the radio during the commercial break. now i’m hanging on, hoping i’ll hear marc’s voice again. i missed the chili peppers music. every freakin’ ad is crawling into my early morning subconscious. i’m not sure i’m tough enough for this.
oh, rachel says coretta scott king has died. 😥
this is a lot to take in before my first cup of tea.
Marc’s add was also on AAR’s stream.. Only once so far I think,,
Is 100 people on a chat really too much? I like my snark fast and furious.
One Hundred people on a chat is a lot like a Local dems meeting.. at least 90 different view points and a few stand up comic want to be’s… although i can’t remember 100 people every being at the dems meeting.
Our dems meetings are interesting in that 25 people can have 90 different opinions.. You see them there arguing with themselves. it is a lot like the Majority Reports blog.
Anybody have a plan on besieging the head of programming at WLIB-NY to put Maron’s show on in the morning hours, preferably in place of the horrendous Springer Show? Anybody got that e mail? [sorry to be such a New York chauvinist, but Springer makes absolutely no sense here].
You know, for the first time in weeks, that little ad made me feel like the dog with the Christmas haggis.
SOTU alternative – Drink French wine and watch the cartoon channel. Heck, I can’t find my fiddle so I’ll ignore the burning.
Dems meeting? Our annual precinct meetings are scheduled for the weekend of 2/16-2/18. Maybe we can actually get a quorum (5 or more registered Democrats) and become an organized precinct. Yeah, right.
Ah CRAP! I must have just missed Marc’s promo for his show. See what happens with no MS, I don’t get up and race to get online anymore.
I like The Freedom Game where you take a drink:40: everytime the chimperor says freedom.
Thanks for that list of traitors Fred.
I thought WLIB was a Clear Channel Robot… program director ???
Coretta Scott King dies on the day 19 Democratic Senators dishonor Martin Luther King and his dream for America.
i’m putting in hard work here listening to every stupid ad hoping to hear marc’s voice again. webhubble noticed the ad at 4:17 a.m. pacific time, maybe it will come around again at 5:17. who knows.
rachel is doing a really excellent job on coretta scott king’s passing. good info on an instant’s notice.
Farmerkat, you must take drastic measures and break mrfarmerkat’s arm to prevent him from going back to the hell hole that is Iraq. Seriously.
Russ tells it like it is again (on TRMS).
isi, i’m thinking about it…
Every time I get into a conversation with other progressives the subject of why the populous isn’t rising up comes up and the normal thought is that no is paying attention. Well this last week end plenty of people seemed to be paying attention so what else could be wrong .. could it be lack or leadership ?? I wonder what would happen if a bunch of lefty talk show hosts spent the weekend yelling the R word ??
Sam Seder is doing a “SOTU Theatre 3000” tonight, where, I guess, a few people will sit around MST3K style, and bust on dubya. Premium members get the video, but the audio should be on the stream.
To Fred’s list of traitors, I think we should also add Joe Biden and Barak Obama. They may have done a “show” vote against cloture, but they both did everything possible to undermine the filibuster movement.
Last night, seder said you may not be able to hear much of dubya’s voice with all the comments that will be made throughout the speech.
The dem senators and reps seem to get it pretty well. Hartman talks to Wyden every week and he sounds just like Finegold.. then they go back to the senate and hide under thier desks.

Yes, between the secret spying, the deceptions leading to war and more, there is plenty to justify putting him on trial.

Again, thanks pj for such an impressive blog. During the last few weeks of the filibuster push on the part of the blogosphere “Morning Seditionists” could not be beat for information and activism. This was the place to be!
Is everybody going to their local anti-State of the Union protest this evening? Be sure to bring back your reports of the event, and post here.

Salazar is also new but he voted for the bankrupcy bill too. :spank::rant1:
Hey, I didn’t get my Maron CD yesterday. Maybe today.
guess i could go for that, but i’m getting real tired of watcing him dance, and i don’t mean like the banana man. :growl:

:rabbi: He’s coming back!
Oh Oh the herd is sending me emails… I was having so much fun I lost track of the time…:???::peace:
I can’t wait to “listen to the :rabbi:go on.”
Hey everybody0 a sad and rainy day here…but in my despair last night I m downloaded and transfered and made playlists of alot of stuff from Jim Earl’s site…so this moring I had a whole playlist of Rapture watches and Sammy the Stem Cells (which there really arent too many of…I wonder if he has them all up or fi there are ore folating round out there.)…which made me feel better.
My Mom is so depressed but she is watching the regular news. I told her that she had to just turn on Rachel and stay on that station (and she likes Springer, but she is his demographic…though I would say much smarter and more activist than his usual listener…but in her 70’s, which is what springer radio attracts.)
I hope that PJ or Methaz or someone who is more technically knowledgeable than me, can grab that Marc spot and make it into a downloadable MP3….Im sure Ill get it on my saved stream but I dont know how to edit it out.
the only ad I’ve heard is one for mark riley & marc maron on morning sedition…my xm radio must need a swift kick
Well, I guess I need to send emails today to the senators who did the right thing and voted for the filibuster and thank them. I won’t include Obama and Biden.
pj, have a tech question for you:
we’re wondering if we need the replay av if we have tivo? although tivo, i guess doesn’t record video from the computer, or does it? I’m so confused :yuck:
ok, i’ve put in 1-1/2 hours of listening to xm commercials without hearing marc’s new ad a second time. i’m glad other people heard it once and that i’m not dreaming. can’t say that there’s a big media blitz for marc’s new show. jerry springer show is starting and there’s no way i’m going to listen for marc’s ad through that show.
Has anyone heard Sam Seder with EJ Dion from last night?
I think that today you can still download and hear it (the pay thing doesnt start till tomorrow)
But that gets you right back in the saddle.
First of all, a knee jerk 3rd party is not what to do with your energy right now. I like the idea but right now we have to focus on getting any somewhat better administration in office.
Dion says that Alito is a bad thing for the country but that if the NEXT judge is conservative enough the court will roll back to a pre New Deal situation and all of the protections and enviornmental laws with be changed….that what Alito means is that we have to work harder to make sure that the next death or retirement doesnt mean that we lose everything….
Things have been very bad before and they have turned around. I know that we are in a very bad place but the prosecuters are very, very serious about what has been going on (NY Magazine just had a great piece on this in the Strokes issue)…and the American people have just had it!
I am talking to people every day who voted for this pig who will never vote republican again!….
This is no small thing. People are furious.
The other thing that Dion says is that the Republicans dont really want Roe repealed…its just a rallying cry. repealing Roe is gonna cause all sorts of problems…and its not going to just lay at that. Then all of the highly organized groups will go after test cases and the people will march. I remember what happened the first time because my Mom was involved and went to washington and all…
Its tragic that it will take so very long to turn things around, but really, the damage that the Bushies have done diplomatically will take many many years to turn around and…well, these thigns are never easy.
None of you can give up…because you already care and so you wont be able to ever go back into a little life of sheep…
And Marc is coming back…..
So, wheres the chat tonight?
Is it possible for this blog to have a chat of its own?
Sam Seder had a list of the senators who voted for cloture and hes got Joe Lieberman at the top of it…hes gonna make an example of Lieberman….heh
We are actually getting a visit tomorrow night at our meetup by a guy show is considering running against Lieberman. If I can get to the meeting I will…I am going to work agains Lieberman…and he is definitely getting challenged this time round…definitley. Its on the top of all of our lists here in CT
Yea, seder really is disgusted by Lieberman. When he mentions him he plays audio of a shofar and says, “lieberman hand in your yarmulke!” :rofl2:
i found this a while back but forgot to post it. it’s an interview with marc from over 5 years ago on fresh air on npr.
I ordered the CD last week and no sign of it. I paid through PayPal too, so there shouldn’t be an issue of waiting for anything to clear.
DAMN, it was good hearing the promo for Marc’s new show this morning…with the bumper music from MS and everything. W00t!
got this in an email –
Unless you can get the computer output into the TiVo input, I don’t think there’s a way to set up TiVo to record from the computer. My ReplayTV boxes have multiple inputs, so I could conceivably set it up to record the computer output, but then I’d need to get the stream up and running first (or just leave it going all the time) and then record form the soundcard output, since (unlike the satellit box) the ReplayTv can’t control the computer.
The Replay AV, on the other hand, can “record” pretty much everything by downloading the stream and capturing it (meaning it can record two or more things at once – which I haven’t done, but I did grab Laura Flanders, for example, at the same time I was listening to the Turks filibuster live). It also means that if you’re doing stuff on your computer, the goofy little noises don’t get into your recording.
Morning, all.
This is somewhat off the topic being discussed today (can’t peruse the posts because I’m so horribly backlogged from being sick last week), but I wanted to share this Molly Ivins piece with you guys. Forgive me if it’s a repeat; I just found it.
Here’s a taste:
Later, blogsibs.
Spot for new show
Melina – ask and ye shall receive! :priest:
The spot for the new show is on line here :rabbi:, at http://www.seditionparty.org/shows/.
aaahhhhh Maron:love:
citizen, I did read that column but it is worth revisiting and certainly relevant to what we just went through with the feckless senators yesterday. I wonder if she will write a post-filibuster analysis.
Hey, man. I’m allergic to cats.
I have to prepare for the state of the union:40:
Here are quick and dirty extracts of two promos for the new show:
1) “Wake Up Sheeple” (from Riley)
2) “What’s Up Geniuses” (from Maddow)
About 10s each.
Really, I haven’t had a drink in a month. It’s bummin’ me out. I think I still have another month to go before I can indulge in that instant crazy:40:
 I have to go read the news now. Then I’ll forget it over breakfast.
oh no, this doesn’t sound good.
What does this even mean, “hit back”?
Read on
They have to get all hostile and say hit back. Why couldn’t they say it may have an impact on world oil prices? It gets me freaked out man.
Maybe I’m mixed up. I don’t think that was a direct quote. But remember that comment about sending Israel to Alaska?
My brain needs some juice, I’ll be back.:40:
Come on sheeple. The more I write, the dumber I sound and the lower my self-esteem falls.:fustrate:
Cover up my nonesense, please.
My computer is fritzin’ out. The task bar won’t disappar. I’ve checked the properies and it says it’s on that mode, so now I’m runnin’a anitvirus scan. Anybody have advice on how to kill spyware and other bothersome applications that I may not be aware of?
Okay, the vampires at the lab have had their shot at me and now I’m at work. Ugh! Anyhow, I forgot to mention that the envelope I got the new CD in was hand addressed, with a PO Box return address but no name. I’m wondering if I could send a congratulations card to that address and get it to Marc? Probably not. Ah, well, insane stalker fans are outta luck again.
I knew Alito would be confirmed but it was still a big disappointment to get into the office, turn on my radio, and hear it. Sigh.
And now I have to catch up my desk. I hate days like this…
Hey, Travis. Just doin’ my part to make you feel less alone. I have spent less than an hour on this blog the past week and am woefully behind in all areas of my life, but I know how it feels to post (and post) and not see any other activity on the blog. Sometimes I really think it’s me!
For anybody who cares, Alito was confirmed, 58-42. The Democrats voting to confirm were: Ben Nelson, Tim Johnson, Robert Byrd and Kent Conrad.
Although I think these turncoats must go, I have more respect for them than I do for those who voted “yes” on cloture and “no” to confirm. They think we’re pretty stupid, I guess.
I do care. I just don’t know what to do with my anger right now.
I just can’t figure out Cantwell and Murray. They voted yes to cloture at a time when they were still outwardly undecided on their final vote. Did they expect brilliance to flash in their brains when the time came to ultimately vote? At least Wyden voted no both times. And while I have issues with Smith, he was at least consistent with his yes votes.
Another good one from Alito’s Triumph and the Politics of Evasion by Norman Solomon:
methaz, thanks for the promos for marc’s new show. i replayed them a few times just for the thrill of it and to convince myself that yes, marc really is going to have his own show and yes, we really will get to hear him again. the chili pepper music played along just as webhubble said.:rabbi::peace::banana:
then i went to look at the James Adomian satire on bush’s state of the union speech that pj linked for us the other day and laughed myself silly for the umpteenth time. link
what we need right now is a good spoof by marc maron and company about Alito.
During Bush’s 2006 State of the Union address, how many seconds will elapse before he brings up 9/11?
– my guess 45 seconds
And how many times will he use the words “terror” and “terrorists” and “terrorism”?
– my guess 18

B-B-But Clinton!
I honestly don’t know what these Democrats are afraid of. I guess it’s just that they take us for granted (since they figure progressives have no other option except to vote for them – case in point, Nelson or Harris in FL), and then they can pander to the wingnuts.
What they fail to understand is that all they’re doing is undermining themselves.
I think it’s time to dump the Democratic Party, personally. I mean, you still have to vote for the least evil, but a new party needs to be raised from the ground up. I don’t care if it’s the Green Party, the Seditionist Party, or the Working Families Party, but it needs to start getting candidates elected to school boards, town councils, city & county governments, then State assemblies, and finally into the US House and Senate. The Democratic Party just isn’t getting it done anymore. Maybe Howard Dean can turn it around, but I don’t know.
Either way, it’s going to be a long process. That’s one of things that pissed me off about Nader. After 2000, as far as I can tell, he did nothing to build a Green Party from local government on up. Just running for President evey four years and then doing nothing isn’t going to accomplish much – not the way our government and our elections work.
Of course, it’s all easier said than done. One problem is that my generation has never actually had to do anything, so I don’t think we know how. My parents went through the depression and WWII, and my (much older) brother had the honor of serving his country in Vietnam, but my generation – the very tail end of the baby boom – has gotten used to having everything else done for us. We gobble down the shit they feed us, and then we bitch about it. Maybe send some e-mails or sign an online petition.
I’m not sure we know how to do what needs to get done.
But, maybe I’m just bummed out today. Our fearless leader will no doubt pick up my spirits tonight.
Those 19 senators who voted for cloture showed us who they really are. Obama and Biden, too. If they couldn’t be swayed by this “netroots” effort I don’t see how they could be persuaded by the netroots in the future. They aren’t worth spending any time on, imho, unless you are trying to get progressives to oppose them.
And, this is what I have to say to
Olympia Snowe
Susan Collins
:priest: Ignominious
I don’t think the gang of 19 are looking at the big picture. Who cares if by successfully blocking Alito you are not reelected. You would have done something heroic for this country that would last a generation and would be historic. This was so important all the other pet projects these sentators had paled in comparison. They are worthless for not taking a principled stand. They could have prevented Alito from getting on the supreme court. They cannot be forgiven.
isi, i agree with you completely:
i live in a very small very liberal community in california, but i grew up in dallas.
the feeling i get from the so-called democrats who could not bring themselves to vote with kerry is how it felt to grow up in dallas surrounded by people who have such a different mindset that you cannot reason with them.
they don’t begin from the same set of premises that we do. logic doesn’t work with them.
that so many of them are democrats is a painful lesson we seem to be reliving over and over. a nightmare that doesn’t stop. it’s like trying to reason with a conservative baptist who thinks bush is saving the world from immorality and who thinks card playing and dancing are sinful. where do you begin talking with someone like that?
this whole alito lesson shows us who is who. that’s good information to have even though we have to deal with the feeling of being betrayed by someone we thought was a friend.
obama and cantwell and the rest don’t see the serious implications of alito’s confirmation. if they did, they could never ever ever never (how can i say this strong enough!) never have voted against the filibuster. they’re focusing on their own careers and networks instead. you can’t use logic on people like that. but now we know who they are and what little they stand for. 😡
in my present mood there is no way i can listen to or look at the state of the union speech tonight. instead i’ll look at the adomian satire again.
My computer still isn’t functioning right. i think I’ll restart it and see what happens.
“Either way, it’s going to be a long process.”
That is really the big point here for true liberals. We have a long long road and an extraordinary amount of work to do. The vote yesterday really had a double effect on me: disgust :barf: and a deep understanding of how bad things really are, ie, how far we really have to go.
The 19 traitorous dems, biden, obama, and the traitorous so-called moderate repubs are not interested in promoting the public good; they are interested in their personal ambitions, to either keep their current jobs or move up the ladder. This WAS the Big Fight, the thing everyone was supposed to have been saving their ammunition for. instead, too many dems just lay down their arms, and said, oh well.
the left is in disarray. the democratic party has few truly democratic (small d) grassroots. the only way to turn this around is for liberals, throughout the country, to start working for the long haul, electing dog catchers, city councilors, state reps who are actually liberal, not just “democratic” in name.
the leadership of the democratic party does not share our goals and our ideals, and really just wants us to hang around for the voting and the money, but to otherwise just go away.
this weekend, I was supposed to be running to be a delegate to our state convention. I am now trying to decide whether it’s worth it. maybe it’s time to join a third party–but ONLY if it is serious about growing roots throughout this country and seriously taking on the corrupt and broken democratic party.
earlier, I was saying that it’s time to read Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History.” I’m serious. things have been thin bad before (in the last gilded age). smart liberals turned it around with the Progressive Party. is it possible to do that again?
hi travis, you aren’t breathing any of that volcanic ash, are you?
I agree foggy, now we know who they are. And, even though I knew the MSM was unreliable this issue really brought clarity to me about each of the media outlets and print media and how they dealt with this issue. We were really all alone fighting for this. There were a few posts on the Huffington Post but the website did not devote much of any space to it. Raw story didn’t really focus on it either and only a couple of shows on air america encouraged activism. It seemed to be blog driven. Boy, is that a tough “row to hoe” (sorry sean).
dpl67, you said:
do you think that there are too few delegates in the state convention to join you and therefore your views won’t be heard?
what exactly is your concern?
i don’t know much about it, but i’d think that the state convention would be exactly the place for a big turnaround to begin and your presence there would be crucial.
I got the CD in the mail this afternoon, and am listening to it right now. GOD, but I miss Morning Sedition right now!
isi, you’re right. i have to remember it’s not just the 19, it’s also the MSM and most of the blogs that we trusted and most of the shows on aar (except seder and randi). feels like we’re a little speck of dust in a vast universe surrounded by ignorance. and worst yet, the ignorance seems to be deliberate and intentional. argggh.
foggyblue,
interesting that you’d pick up on that part. here in Mass. the state democratic party is, contrary to popular belief, fairly center-conservative. in my town, cambridge, however, there are ALOT of liberals. unfortunately, because we’re from cambridge, we’re dismissed state-wide as, “well THAT’s just Cambridge.” (nationally, the mantra is “well, THAT’s just Mass.) (apparently, cambridge residents are not legitimate residents of mass. in the same way that Mass. is not a legitimate part of the US).
but, I digress; that’s not exactly my concern. really, what I am interested in is trying to drive the debate, nationally and state-wide away from its current center-to-far-right axis to left vs. right, so that is legitimate, once again, for a truly liberal voice to be part of the debate. there needs to be an effective opposition party for that to happen. I don’t know if the democratic party is generally capable of being reformed, unless it is threatened by a strong, viable third party. which leads me to wonder if I should try to find a way to encourage that.
basically, I am trying to figure out how best to use my time. that’s why I want to read up more on the Progressive Movement. (sorry for another long-winded post).
Hey, beemer, let’s go to Walmart and look for Maron’s dad! :rofl2:
(My father is schizophrenic, not manic-depressive, so I can’t fully identify with Marc but I can sympathize…)
 a bow with the MS Arc to pj for answering replay question and methaz for the bites on maron
yes, it’s going to be a long road and we just have to get smarter with every fight. I started screaming about the judges in 2000. I get so frustrated that people don’t understand our courts. To top off my frustration, the gop recent talking points about the courts are a complete farce.
enough with the awnald “nurse joke” on franken’s show – Kathryn L would have shut him down…
I got my CD today too. 🙂 I feel much better now.
Woo-hoo! US Savings rate the lowest since the Great Depression. Hell of a job, Georgie!
Our country is in a serious leadership crisis, and it’s not a liberal or conservative problem. The Democrat party seems most disfunctional because they are out of power, but speaking as a conservative and former Republican the R’s are just as screwed up; it just doesn’t show as bad when you are running things.
The key problem is that both parties are more concerned about scoring points and acquiring/maintaining power than governing. That means both parties have to find wedge issues and pursue a divide, distract, and distort strategy. So you get ignominiousness like voting for cloture, but against the nominee. Or passing “campaign finance reform” which is really incumbant protection and speech limiting. Neither party is responsive to the needs of the people – the policy approach (conservative or liberal) is somewhat irrelevant at this point.
I’m a….
Dildo!!!!

Hey, I’m a dumbass
:banana::banana::banana::banana:
dpl67, you said,
i see what you’re getting at. you want to leverage the democratic party out of the corporate mindset and back to fighting for the little guy.
what comes immediately to mind is david cobb. he’s a local lawyer here. he ran for president as a green candidate last year and did a phenomenal job afterwards by persuing the vote “irregularities” in ohio when kerry just packed up and went home. david cobb did an incredibly important job for the nation and for the democrats, esp. the center-right ones, who would have ignored ohio completely if not for david’s efforts.
of course he had to deal with the green party, which out here means dealing with folks who insist on 14-hour meetings with consensus and who argue vigorously for a separate currency. but david seems to have done good with the group anyway.
eventually his efforts forced even kerry to make some little bleeping noises about an unfair vote in ohio.
maybe you ought to get together with david cobb?
gachplope –
And when the housing market bubble pops what happens?
And when the securities markets go nuts when money stops flowing in from foreign investors, what happens?
And when consumer spending shuts down due to debt overload, what happens to the markets?
oh no, randi just did an testimonial ad for buying gold, said she bought gold as an investment and we should too.
i feel ill. randi! no!!! don’t do this!!!
For the last few months, I have been getting several spam messaages (trying to sign me up to some scheme). Nothing unusual there. What is troubling is that the subject titles of the messages regularly are unusual They seem to be telling me that they are accessing my internet posts. One is the use of an obscure *password*, or a variation of the name as though they are mocking me. (How do they know about “Walter Benjamin”?) Does anybody know what I am trying to say?
Below is an example:
Subject: Republican to say he would vote against Alito, but he said he would not support the filibuster.

NickiRose, my sister just a minute ago sent me the following email which sounds like it might be addressing some of the points you just made:
Okay, so I finally got around to reading Sunday’s NY Times and there was an interview with a fellow named James Blunt. He’s a singer out of England who used to be in the military. Now, I have nothing against his having been in the military. In fact, he said some very wise things about it, including this:
The trouble is…sigh…the Times really ought to stay out of the business of interviewing pop stars. They just don’t do it well. Read it for yourself.
One bright spot in the filibuster debacle seemed to be Debbie Stabenow. Didn’t she come out early and firm for a filibuster? Maybe she’s the anti-hillary as far as taking a stand is concerned.
Isi, I don’t think anyone is the anti-Hillary. I think too many of the Dems are sufferring from partial spine removal.
Yeah, I’m depressed about it.
Iran Papers Are for an Atomic Bomb
Is something building up, or is it just me?
God Damn! Where have I been? Stew Albert Died! :omg: (His HEP C, after being in remission, flared up and returned as cancer.) People would sometimes tell me “You need to hook up with Stew and organize something to bring attention to the Palestinian situation”. I never did, because his formidable intellect intimidated me. I mean, Stew was Brilliant…funny…thoughtful… Stop being a coward, jerk! Act into the world!:rabbi::mad::jesus:
Stew Albert. Who’s that?
Gotta get something going for the ’06 elections. Bush’s numbers are steady in the toilet – and the traditional media spin just isn’t working anymore. Only the very wealthy or the truly stupid haven’t realized what’s going on.
I must be truly stupid, I guess.

No, Travis, I didn’t mean that. I meant that only the truly stupid still don’t see what a catastrophic failure this administration has been for the country – and the planet. And the truly wealthy are too short-sighted to see past their balance sheets.

Revolutionary for the Hell of It
The Good Life of Stew Albert
By JEFFREY ST. CLAIR
As one of the creative directors of the Yippies, Stew Albert helped to script the 60s. Stew’s life is a joyous rebuttal to the slurs of mean-spirited bigots such as David Horowitz and Newt Gingrich that the 60s counterculture unleashed a moral rot at core of American society.
Of course, Stew was the true moralist. And the prime moral virtue was to live honestly. He had seen his own government spy on him and his family for no justifiable cause, politicians betray their constituents, cops beat and gas demonstrators on the streets of Chicago, university presidents summon National Guard troops onto campuses to abuse and kill students, and generals repeatedly lie about the war in Vietnam, where 54,000 young Americans and 2 million Vietnamese died.
The Yippies thrived on the exposure of moral hypocrisy. Their creative mischief made radical politics fun. The Yippies proved to be more effective than the dour pronouncements of Tom Hayden or the trustfund bombers in the Weather Underground. The Yippies didn’t need George Lakoff to tell them how to “reframe” an issue. They learned from the Situationists as well as vaudeville acts and Borscht Belt comedy routines, from the Marx cousins, Karl and Groucho. And because of that their legacy lives in Earth First and Greenpeace. The chaotic carnival of protest that overswept the streets of Seattle during the WTO meetings owed much to the Yippie brain trust of Albert, Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin.
Stew outlived his colleagues in mayhem, Rubin and Hoffman, by 20 years, spending most of that time in Portland. But he didn’t retreat from the world. . .

Most of the time when you buy Gold you don’t get the gold just a certificate that says you own it and allows you to trade it. In the case of a national emergency the government can suspend trading in precious metals. They can even seize your safety deposit boxes under the rules of martial law.
I’m pickin’ up what you’re throwin’ down PJ. I’ll check that anti-spyware stuff too, Fred.
This “Confessions of an Economic Hitman” is old news. We used to study this sort of stuff 15 years ago. “I am shocked! Shocked that gambling is going on here.” Perkins describes what has been the formal modus operandi of the US since WW2. Anybody read Philip Agee?
Should I download that spybot stuff?
Have any of you?
Spybot is good. Ad-Aware is good too.

Do I take the plunge and run it?
Hartman says he knows Perkins and says that his book is more drama than anything else. The reasons that Perkins puts forward about why the rest of the world disdains the US is true though.
Yes Travis.. run it.. Half the software in the world doesn’t have MicroSoft certificates these days.
Cool, thanks.
I guess I have to exit all windows programs. I’ll be back.
By the way, I bought & downloaded Maron’s new CD at iTunes – this is the quickest way of getting it. Also, they have samples.
Hey! Even though Perkins’d book is not ground-breaking, it is still valuable in that it gets the word out about what is going on in our name. Now. How do we get the masses upset enough to rise up and STOP IT, once and for all?:omg:
We used to talk about the stuff Randi is ranting about soon after it happened. For what its worth, I believe that the first gulf war anti-war movement was an important development. We were organizing and going into the streets “before the war started.” Our street demonstrations in Seattle were large and exciting. (Other cities have similar experiences.) Shall we crank up the antiwar movement?
Most rethugs probably think that being an empire is cool.. Most are proponents of solving every problem with an H bomb. I don’t think more than 15% – 20% of the populace are really truly stupid rethugs though.
I don’t know if anybody’s seen this or not, but for those who haven’t, there’s a pretty recent interview with Marc at One Trick Pony.
I have said this a lot but I really think that most people in the US are pretty aware of whats going on and don’t approve of it but they don’t want to go out and get arrested by themselves for trying to do something about it. It won’t take zillions of people in the streets to solve the problems. Some good old negroponte inspired techniques will probably work quit well. How long did it take the DC police to find those two guys in the Chevy ??
foggyblue,
david cobb is great, and his running mate (I’m forgetting her name right now) is wonderful, too. she is a single mom, former welfare recipient from maine, where I’m from originally. but your post pointed out one of the problems with the greens: they just don’t seem able to focus enough and organize in a broad based, grassroots fashion, which is necessary to become a real player in national politics. (exept in maine, where there is public campaign financing, and alot of greens have been getting elected.) in mass. the greens are just not very interesting, at least from what I have seen so far.
lefties seem almost inherently unable to organize themselves these days. but it hasn’t always been that way…..
The problem with taking to the streets is that will 2 million people in the street yelling “YA YA HO HO George Bush has got to go” really have any effect as long as the demonstration is peaceful ?? A lot of people could get injured if the DC police or the army got nervous. If 30-40 people in groups of 4 to 6 started working the DC suburbs in the middle of the night that would cause havoc.
by the way, did anyone notice that john mccain — darling to the media and some really misguided dems– voted not only against the filibuster but in favor of alito? :growl::growl::growl::growl:
what a guy. :growl::growl::growl:
Man, it’s crazy. I hear a bird. I hear a bird from outside. This is great. I can even see the sun. Man, what a trip. The sun makes you feel kind of sick at first. But after a few minutes it’s nice…oh, so nice.
Yeah, what do I quarantine?

There’s an element of adolescent ignorance in there, too. That pubescent boy, us vs. them, tough-talkin’ thing that takes over some people – a lot of these boys (girls, too, maybe, but it seems more prevalent in boys) just never seem to grow out of it.
It’s funny, we were doing our “bring the troops back home” thing a while back, mostly in front of a manger scene, with Mary and the baby Jesus and all, and people went by, mostly either tooting their horns and waving in support, or just ignoring us, but then came this white kid driving a pickup truck, and he rolled down the window and started screaming out something or other. He’d be sorry to know we couldn’t really hear him, but you could see the venom, and the screwed up face, all spittin’ and foaming…. And you just know the type – the 101st fighting keyboardists, who “support” the troops, and their fearless leader, but would never put on a uniform and drag their asses over to rot in the desert. The kind that swagger and talk real tough, as long as it’s somebody else going over to do the fighting and killing and dying.
And all I could think was, man, here we are, under a Christmas tree by the manger. “Peace on earth, goodwill toward men.” I mean, for these so-called Christians, waging their war to save Christmas, do they think Jesus was just kidding about that stuff?
Travis…. quarentine all of those The spyware scanner won’t identify anything that is not spyware.
Ok. I checked all of them. Thanks:doh:
travis, is this the first time this year that you’ve heard a bird and seen the sun?
Yeah, at the same time. It’s great!
I was in the other room. Sorry it took so long.
Even if it was a raven, it still was a nice experience.
sunshine and a raven in alaska.:nixon::alc::!::banana:
I bet Bush says he wants to open ANWR. Who’s with me?
:alc:
I don’t like the idea, but that’s what I think is going to happen tonight.
Check it
Travis… Most of us realize the Alaskan oil does not come south but goes west instead. The oil companies would have to open new refineries on the Pacific coast to process any more oil… fat chance of that.
What do the people in Alaska think of drilling in and developing ANWR ??
you’re right, trav. bush has his sights set on anwr. what does he care about a raven and sunshine. his friends need billions more $$$ in their pockets.
does he take some kind of drug that puts a permanent smirk on his face? his face looks like some kind of weird rigor mortis hit it.
I like The Freedom Game where you take a drink everytime the chimperor says freedom.
Comment by Kristapea — January 31, 2006 @ 8:02 am
Holy crap, I’ll be shitfaced by 9:30. :40::40::40:
So Bush is going to say we’re addicted to oil? Tough words coming from a failed oil man. :spank:
Marc’s CD is hilarious, by the way. No surprise there. Can’t wait for the show to begin.
(Marc’s, not the Chimp’s.)
Did I mention that Bill Nelson is a spineless twit, whose only virtue in the upcoming campaign is that he is NOT Katherine Harris? :growl:
Wait a minute, I think I just did.
They enthusiastically want it open. Also the native tribes closest to ANWR want it open. So a lot of people in this state, but I think that’s because most of the revenue would stay here. I don’t exactly know what the public opinion is, but I’m sure most want ANWR open.
Pj, you should start a new thread for a state of the union response. What do ya think?
:ear:
I’ll be quiet now. Sorry.
what i would like to hear: marc’s ongoing comments into his ipod while he watches bush lie and smirk and stumble through the state of the union speech tonight.
is there ANYONE who actually wants to hear what bush has to say???
Ok, as long as I don’t have to listen to monkey boy.. I just can’t stand him. I may listen via SOTU 3000 (if this ad break music doesn’t make me shoot myself in the head, that is).
What time is asshole on? 9:00 EST?
By the way, if anybody wants to watch a real president, CSPAN has video and transcripts of past SOTU’s, including back when the state of the union was actually pretty good (you know, like, from 1993 – 2000).
That’s with the Turks, right?
No, that’s with Sammy on MR.
Oh, there is no MR in Alaska. I guess I’d have to stream it. I probably would have to pay for it, too. So no MR for me.
The Turks are streaming video for free though.
It’s free. It’s free!
I’m only hearing news though. We’ll see if MR comes on.
Yeah, the stream is still free. that’s how i listen
