Well, I’m not much for going to funerals, but I sure woulda liked to’ve been sittin’ next to dubya yesterday, watching him squirm. Of course the Bush apologists are all over it, saying “those people” don’t know how to behave themselves. Well, fuck all you Hannitys and Limbaughs and O’Reillys and Matthews and whatever other wingnut assholes are out there that are so offended by the truth, and the people who have the balls to speak it.
Maybe if your boy hadn’t had all his events managed and sanitized for the past five years, we wouldn’t be in the goddamn mess we’re in today. I just wish some of it would sink into that ventriloquist’s dummy head of his, but I reckon that’s about as likely as Danny Goldberg learning how to run a radio station.

Sean I was trying to test the ReplayRadio thingy PJ was talking about. Was trying it out on Riley’s show. It works great. I guess I can podcast Marc’s show whenever it starts that is ๐ฎ
Dont understand why Riley is terrified even to talk of Marc. He has not a word to say about Marc. ๐ก
hey…maybe someone should call Riley and ask him about Marc’s show….let hear how he reacts
:fustrate:after i posted this on my myspace blog i actually recieved the e-mail after it crazy people i must say:nod:
ok so i bitch about wal-mart all the time and i shop there rather frequently. i know that is hypocritical but i cant help it. im kinda stuck since wal-mart is one of the few stores with parking lots i can get into fairly easily with a semi-truck. not to mention i do most of my traveling at night and conveniently enough most wal-mart supercenters are open 24/7. i try and balance it out and get me some good karma by shopping at small mom & pop stores when i get into downtown areas of cities as i often do with my job. one of my biggest problems with wal-mart, well aside from the sweat shops, tax evasion, (i pay all of my taxes) low-wages, high republican political contributions $$$$$, (we really do need publicly funded campaigns) union busting etc. etc. etc. ………………….. and on and on is their hypocritical propensity for censorship every cd that comes into their stores is censored yet motion pictures and video games are sold as is. they sell the video game manhunt. they sell many war games such as socom navy seals. they sell GRAND THEFT AUTO (great friggin game by the way). the point is they sell movies, books, and video games all peppered with fucks, shits, and damns yet eminem and nirvana can not say fuck because bad words corrupt. oh yeah and they ban maxim magazine, stuff magazine, and fhm because of “adult content” (not that there is much adult about them, very juvenile if you ask me. pretty pictures though) yet cosmopolitan is perfectly fine. ok well im all done bitching about wal-mart. so here, for everybody’s viewing pleasure is a little video about wal-mart threatening to sue a town into bankruptcy if they try and stop them from building in their community.
a link for all you friggin blogger people
hey. how’s it going? Okay here, I guess. Can I ask you why you “hate” wal-mart so bad? I know why I hate wal-mart but that is because I use to work for them for almost 7yrs and then right before the 7yr anniversary that dropped me like a bad habit. And that I hate wal-mart song is so funny but right at the same time.
email me when you get a chance or if you want to chat im me at on aol.
thanks,
Amanda
call him quiet!!!!! so what youre saying is that you wouldnt of been listening to riley but you had to test your replay i see
Sean! are you crazy! i can’t call New York!:omg:
hey, i remember that blog! i have to post more blogs on Myspace.so did you tell why Wal-mart is evil?
i thought the blog already said enough but yeah i expounded a tiny bit
1-866-303-2270 toll free quiet call that fat fucker
aw man….that’s it…it can’t stand it anymore. i’m going to go catch 40 winks before school.
:yawn::yawn::yawn::yawn::yawn::yawn::yawn:
i’ll talk to you guys later :nixon::doh::40::banana::sammy::banana:
:spank:sorry riley
ok well i just reread my wal-mart blog and im annoyed i hate it when i reread stuff and catch bad grammar damn it ok well uh call quiet the only reason im still up is because im waiting to hear you
i’m too sleepy to call…….you seem to be more awake then me. Go get’em Tiger!!:nixon:
haha!! i guess no one’s gonna call today.
Riley! you won this round!
Yeah. Gave up listening to Riley after a couple of his shows. No point falling off to sleep after just waking up. No offense meant to Riley but he is not good as a solo radio host. And if Marc’s new show is going to be only one hour ๐ก Danny :fu:
:yawn:ive been up for 22 hours i would swear on air wouldnt be able to help it
im only up because i heard lawton i wasnt even getting online until i heard his wonderful voice!!!!!
wow a :priest:christo fascist called riley i cant believe it dumb bastard i wish marc was here for this one or even better ๐ฟ malloy
Morning, everybody.
Lawton Smalls’s Hallelujah Hayride! Woo-hoo, it’s been a long time since I laughed at morning radio…and this was only a commercial!
Do we know that Marc’s show is only an hour long? That sux. The combination of Marc, Jim Earl and Lawton Smalls is charmed. It’s the unholy trinity.
sean maybe they’d make you into a character on the show. the cranky pissed off Seditionists!
:santacool:merry christmas people
morning Becky!:nixon:
well, okay. now i’m really going to sleep.
Bub-bye!
me? i would never work as a charachter i think?
so are you a rebecca and you shorten it to becky?
i e-mailed my room-mate about the happenings at the funeral heres what he had to say
And they can say all they want about her funeral not being the place for shit like that and they’d be wrong. Her and MLK would’ve loved the idea. Besides he was only there for publicity so the poeple who smashed him weren’t doing anything different than he was.
oh wow i feel like an ass now just found out wal-mart worker girl has cerebral palsy and was recently diagnosed with asthma well i guess now i know why she got fired but she says shes gonna fight wal-mart and sue them for firing her for being disabled so uh if its your thing or even if its not pray she gets justice
Hi, quietgirl and Sean. I’m just “Becky.”
I loved hearing the clip from Mrs. King’s funeral. Who was it who was ranting? He’s my new hero!
ok im going 2 sleep riley is making me tired and his guest isnt helping any
Riley’s show has now morphed into a sports- music with some political talk show..:yawn:
:banana:Lowery, former head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which Martin Luther King helped found in 1957, gave a playful reading of a poem in eulogy of Mrs. King and made a none-too-veiled reference to the Iraq war launched by Bush.
“We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there / But Coretta knew and we knew that there are weapons of misdirection right down here / Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor,” Lowery said.
“She extended Martin’s message against poverty, racism and war/She deplored the terror inflicted by our smart bombs on missions way afar,” he said.
that guy?
mornin fred youre not gonna make me more :paranoid:paranoid:paranoid: again today are you?
PJ and Melina, thanks for the info on Replay Radio. I’ll check it out. PJ, I think you owe Melina a Coke because she called jinx. ๐
Did anyone else see Satan, I mean Cheney, on Lehrer last night? I struggled through the first fifteen minutes but that was all I could take. What an evil bastard. “We have all the legal authority we need.” Just what I need to hear to get fired up about throwing Repigs out of office in November to get the impeachment started. :fu:
There was this like six line article in the NYT that said that the dems were not going to do as well this year as they expected because they couldn’t get their act together on national defense. If they have to even talk about it they have no idea about whats going on.
The goof balls in DC must have their own version of the Marvel Comics for reps and senators from which they get all their news. Oh yeah… is called the Wall Street Journal
WalMart is evil because they buy all there junk… err.. fine merchandise.. from China and pay their employees Chinese wages to boot. They also chase out all the local merchants and subsidize their workers health care through state medicaid programs.. other than that they are an outstanding company.
Yes, Joseph Lowery, right?
Long live Joseph Lowery!
Is everything politics these days..?? When people die from what they do I would call it murder. Joseph Lowery said it like it is… The M$M needs to be indroduced to a base ball bat.
I didn’t hear Lawton this morning. Hopefully, it’ll get replayed on Rachel’s show. So, am I to take it that the new Marc show will only be an hour long, and that it will be on XM after Malloy? Well, as long as I can catch the stream from somewhere, it’ll be OK. But damn, an hour? That really sucks. I’m glad I didn’t fall for their premium service, the bastids.
On after Malloy !!!!!:mad::omg:
In LA that would be midnight.. what is he going to do cuss for a whole hour ??
oh I missed Laughton…. oh my, oh my….
one hour:?: sounds like a looong letter campaign we’ll have to start.
I’m greedy :growl:
SHIT. pj, after all my pestering I ordered replay a/v and look:
Well, maybe Marc & Co for an hour won’t be soooo bad because it’ll be a full hour of funny.
Apropos of nothing . . .
I’m reading Shibumi, by Trevanian, who (since I began reading him last summer) is my new, hands-down-favorite author.
I’m only about 60% of the way through, and bogged down right now in a section about spelunking (though, since I trust Trevanian, I am not skipping past it because it will figure in later, I’m sure), but I’ve been meaning to write about how prescient he was. The book was first published in 1979, but his take on the oil industry/terrorism/gov’t spying/m$m complicity is spot-on. I keep going back to the copyright page to make sure I’m not dreaming. It’s as if he wrote the script for how things have played out in this country. Not that he prescribes it; in fact, he’s pretty clear about his disdain for the whole thing, but it’s really quite amazing to read this now.
Anyway, just thought I’d share.
SO now how do I “tape” the stream:?:
Oh, what a fretting morning…. :billcat:
Farmerkat How geeky are you ?? There are some OSX stream capture programs but they probably won’t be as user friendly to install as a Windoz product might be.
recording streams information here
–sounds like a complex author, kahn, what other books of his have you read?
Hi everybody-
An hour is good…it just limits how many interviews he can do. But, that is what Rachel got when they cancelled Unfiltered. And now she is positioned to take over mornings….so, I wouldnt worry. Marc can make a tight, excellent hour and also branch out in to TV….which is what DG really likes! Rachel’s star seemed to really start rising when she got on MSNBC.
I think that Marc sort of enjoys that remote correspondent stuff. Hell, he gets all acces at the grammys and he gets to meet and joke around with everyone. Its also alot of exposure. Remember when he was asked on Good Morning America for some sort of lifestyle spot?…I thought that he would definitely do alot more of that.
An hour will allow him time to get things rolling so that DG will be begging him to take over Al’s slot….or maybe he will just be done with it…
who knows?I am sure that this is not exclusive to XM. If it was then he would have a deal directly with them on their comedy channel or some such. Im sure that it will stream from the radio station page when its on (for replay or whatever) and then XM is the national outlet.
So they are saying that they have a national outlet! Which is good. its not the best unless you want to go over to XM…but if you do…its got great music, news (BBC,CSPAN, MSNBC live,) specials, and the sound is really good. I got it because I lose the NYC signal here at night…and the portable player will save 5 hours or programming. This was before my iPod, but now they compliment eachother.
The other thing is, Im sure that you can set that up to record. I know that you can run it through your computer pretty easily and capture it with Replay…There, you have, for $12.95 per month, the entire lineup of AAR AND BBC, Comedy channels, Opie and Anthony (which I cant stand but…)all kinds of music, sports…everything…and the news and talk shows are great.
They are supposedly coming out with a portable player that holds 50 hours of material.
I’m not too geeky, fred, but always willing to attempt learning.
I read Shibumi many years ago. Great book. Trevanian also wrote the Eiger Sanction (you may have seen the Clint Eastwood movie), and had gay cowboys way before Brokeback Mountin in Incident at 20-mile.
An hour show is only about 38 minutes after commercials, and when you take out the intros and outtros, you’ve barely got a half-hour of content. It’s better than nothing, for sure, but not enough.
Hey, farmerkat.
Well, the first book I read was his last, The Crazyladies of Pearl Street. The Pearl Street in question is in Albany (NY), which is a favorite destination for hubby and me. We actually first learned of the book while in Albany last summer. I think it’s his best, although it is much different from his earlier books.
In order of preference (best first), here are the others I’ve read:
The Summer of Katya
The Main
The Loo Sanction
The Eiger Sanction
He wrote a couple other books that are out of print, so Shibumi will be my last until I can find them. Even when I don’t love his subject, his writing is so good that it doesn’t matter–he’s just a pleasure to read. Unfortunately, he died in December, so there probably won’t be any more books from him.
Summer of Katya was especially beautiful. I wish I’d saved it for last, but I’d heard that Shibumi was his best.
Farmer- I just had to get my son a mac laptop for school and Im absolutely lost with it…and I am geeky with tech things…I cant understand what it is that people like about them, but I guess that Ive always been a PC person so Im sorta brainwashed. I like that I can open up my computer and move stuff around in the tower…I added a TV card and thats excellent. I havent figure out the best software to burn TV shows to DVD but I have saved a ton od daily shows and Colbert reports…
Anyway, I will ask my Mac friend who is a graphic designer…and also the school tech if you want…to see what is out there. I know that there must be something sinple for Mac to record…or that you can get a piece that you plug in that is a CD recorder….and something to capture the stream.
With Marc’s new hours it looks like I will be learning how to be a night person. ๐ฎ
Message to Rachel:
Go Buy A Radio Voice!!!
Until then I can’t hear
anything you are saying.
:billcat:
PJ–
Last I checked, Incident wasn’t available but I’ll look for it again. (See what I mean about prescient?)
By the way…did anyone see Dowd this morning in the NY Times? I posted Kristof yesterday to RIPCoco…am worried about putting it up 2 days in a row lest I get in trouble for breaking the exclusive for subscribers deal…but its great! I hope she is right about Hillary…I am really getting worried that the Dems will run Hill…that could be too big of a gamble for us.And, yes, I think we have to come out strongly with a defense plan of some sort….at least say somethign besides that we would figure that out if we were in the position…
Eiger Sanction – yep
oh man, i’m not geeky enough for some of that mac/record stuff. egads.
melina, i have xm, bought it because of MS.
I used to have to support Macs at work, and I really wasn’t too crazy about them. For one thing, I didn’t find them to be the foolproof, never crashing machines that I’d been led to believe they were.
Good Morning. WAHHHH! I missed Lawton!
thnaks melina. I’ll buy marc’s podcast, but pj’s idea of replay had me already down the path of wanting to record stuff.
ISI – when rachael goes on her tirades, I can NOT stand her voice either.
re: mr farmerkat – (asked on yesterday’s blog) is fine. we talk via cell phone (except when Iraqis pick up his line before he does. I’ve “spoken” to a few!), hard line phone and emal. he said the anger over the cartoons (but not REALLY about the cartoons) is picking up steam rather than dieing out. thanks for asking!
So has he-who-eats-children-for-breakfast-cheney said that iran caused 9-11 yet? I’m waiting for him t say that. :crap:
The way Marc was talking before he got sliced out of morning radio sounded like Danny didn’t like him so much, so I doubt he’ll get Al’s time slot. An hour is not long enough!
Farmerkat That site you found with the MAC OSX stream capture software was the sme one I found.. There might be an Itunes or Quick-time plug in that will do the capture too but I’m sure Apple does not sell it so you may have to understand how to install RPM’s or binaries or something of the like on your MAC.

Why are Macs so difficult? Is it just me?
Macintosh computers.
I have to say this. Being a computer professional, ex-IBM employee with intimate knowledge of Apple, I can tell you the Apple’s targeted audience for computers is the graphics design industry and all its associated uses. Always has been and always will be. To survive, though, they began marketing to college students and the general public. The iPod is their golden egg. Their Mac’s will always be crippled by lack of software due to the limited market value.
Imagine yourself a software developer. You have time to develop one program and sell it for lots of bucks. Mac has 15% of the market, Linux another 15% and Windows the remaining 60% of the market. Which do you write for? Macs lose and always will. Besides, they are moving to Intel chips and most of the old Mac software will not port to new computers. That has been an Apple hangup for years – new computer means new software.
So, I ask you, why would anyone want to buy a Mac if it is always a dead proposition? I am not a Microsoft fan but one does not do battle with the ocean and expect to win.
Kristapea, thanks for the funny! :rofl2:
Ive been pretty freaked out by these cartoon riots….and Farmerkat, I agree with Mr that its not as much about breaking religious law as about the whole thing.
What is going to happen if the whole muslim world is up in arms over whatever and we’ve got people like Bush and Hillary who are saying that they are very concerned about Iran…and our military is stretched so thin and we are in such debt…and Russia and China support Iran…and there is nothing in the budget for Iraq for next year…?
What does this mean?
Also, my Mom is so pissed off because the Muslim Mullahs dont seem to really stand up and and against all of this. I suppose its religious law, but if Muslims spread out all over the world and into secular societies they cant really expect …or take offense at any depiction of god…?
I suppose that when people are rioting in the streets its a difficult thing to do to stand up for freedom of expression or whatever, but it seems like Denmark has backed down…and then some of these cartoonists throughout the world are striking back by making more cartoons…which is leading to violence…and how can a religion have a rule that you cant depict god at all, much less in a cartoon with a bomb in his turban?
OSX is a Debian/NetBSD Linux derivative so it exhibits a lot of the same strangeness as almost any LINUX with X windows does. You can get FEDORA from Red-hat and something called Yellow Dog Linux for a MAC too. The FEDORA Cd’s as ISO images are down loadable from Red-hat’s web site for free, A lot of techie users put LINUX on their MACS so they can participate in the LINUX communities discussion groups.
Jean Paul Sartre! Who reads him anymore?:rofl2:
NC- Also, I think that when I first got into computers, my father, who is schooled as an MIT engineer, (in other words he takes things apart and rebuilds them,) was really into the idea that you could build these things…so my earliest experiences with them were that you could open the thing up and slide cards in and add memory or whatever. If things go wrong I always am the first one to take the thing apart and mess with it….
Back then, the folks I knew with Apples had to take them to the shop. You couldnt open them up. I remember also that back when Compaq first had cheap machines ont he market that they were welding pieces in place so you couldnt do much with them or fix things with out dealing always with Compaq…I thought that was nuts, though the machines were cheap.
Anyway…its been really funny for me to figure this thing out. The only Apple thing Ive ever used is an iPod and I could hardly figure that out because I just dont understand nice design as opposed to function…
It took me a whole evening to find that Safari was Explorer…and I had to write my graphics friend for that. I also couldnt figure how to turn the thing off…and I spent a really long time figureing out how to right click…because we are addicted to the right click in this house. and it makes no sense to have to use two hands to do that!
Its been disconcerting for me. Honestly, I dont want to go further. When my son leaves this special school that Ive got him in for a couple of years, I want to sell it and get him some other laptop….Maybe MOnarch will have a nice one. They are a completely American company who doesnt outsource their tech help.
Ive really gotten into this magazine called Wired. They had a little article about these new plastic laptops with a crank that cost like $100…someone is developing them so that all the children of the world can have computers. I wonder what OS they have….
If its the children of the world Ill bet its asshole Gates trying to get in on the action for some good publicity…but then he’d give them a break rather than free software in exchange for some photo ops…
๐ก I get so mad when I hear that bit from Kerry on Rachel’s show! It’s comments like that make me think he threw the election.
:growl:Also, that friggin’ sunsetter ad is driving me NUTS! They even tried to tone it down with a pestering guy but I still have to turn the sound down.
good morning farmerkat!
i only quickly scrolled through the posts after your replay comment, so maybe someone has already mentioned this, but the software i use for recording streams on a mac is called (inappropriately enough) “wire tap”.
i’ve been using the freeware version for the past year or so and it couldn’t be easier to use. the only problem with the freeware version is that you can’t schedule recordings. for that you need wiretap pro. i’m planning to get it when (if?!) marc’s s new show starts. it only costs about 20 dollars.
as for the “macs vs. windowz” debate – i hate computers – that’s why i use a mac.
Why isn’t Kent Jones funny on Rachel’s show? Cheesy cracks.
That’s a problem?:omg:
Is Maron to be on tomorrow?:rabbi:
Yes. Marc Maron will be on Rachel’s show tomorrow. He will talk about the Grammies. :omg:
Fuck Bono!:fu:
maybe Kent needs Marc’s help editing and punching up his humor?
Now I have to watch the Grammy’s so I can catch a glimpse of Marc. Or will he be watching it at home in his underwear with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and his cats ๐
Tom…great!! that is really good info to have for all of us struggling in the Mac world…
But dont Macs make you hate computers more unless youre in Graphics or music?I love computers and Ive never ever, in the depths of my despair, hated one until I met this Mac that my son brought home! I guess it depends on what youre used to.
I think that Kent is used in different ways by different people. he is excellent in all ways, I think…but the problem here is probably more who’s show hes on than what he is capable of.
:sheep::sheep::fire::sheep:
Busy day! (As though anyone gives a fuck.)
I think he probably will be able to go as press…thats what I was thinking…but youd have to spot him. Too bad they havent developed the video feed. It would be great to follow him around and watch what he does.
Okay, that’s it. The first time I see an ad on a parking lot stripe my campaign to boycott all annoying ads is kicked off. I don’t buy Old Navy clothes because of THEIR ads and there’s a couple of others, Ovaltine, which I wouldn’t buy anyways but now I will NEVER even drink it because of how annoying those ads with the screaming kids are.
thanks tomT et al – I’ll check out wiretap!
I’m using a mac as I inherited mr’s as he took his dell to the big sandbox (company computer). i decided to try his to determine what i will eventually buy. with apple switching to the intel chip, i thought it might be prudent to see what starts happening in the computer world. i will say i hated my dell laptop as it just gobbled up crap from everywhere, even with all kinds of bells & whistles. over time, it just got plain ugly.
my technology know-how starts and stops with being able to rebuild 1940- 70’s VW engines. don’t think i’ve progressed much since.

Then Marc 1-2am ET and 12-1am CST
I think I’ve got it, now. :billcat:
Charles Goyette is talking about the fact that Gonzalas was not put under oath. He talked about it yesterday and I automatically called my senators and apparently a whole lot of other people got the same idea to call from listening to the show. Which prompted Kyl’s secretary to ask a caller if he was part of a calling campaign!

How can anyone know where they are if they do not know WHEN they are?
Ha…here is from yesterday on Kristof’s blog regarding Bill O’Reilly and his trip to Darfur that he wont take because he is so “busy”: (links to this op-ed from yesterday are on RIPcoco)
I’m just headed out the door to Columbia University to speak about — what else? — Darfur. But as of 7:38 a.m. this morning the pledges to finance Bill O’Reilly’s trip to Darfur totalled $75,799.61. (That does not include a considerable number of people who are only willing to pay for a one-way ticket.) I’ll have more updates tomorrow.
By the way, some people say that if O’Reilly doesn’t go, they want the money to go to charity or to Darfur. I can’t do that for you, but if want to do that then check out a coalition like Save Darfur or almost any aid organization. They all operate there
As for calling Senators… I emailed two dozen yesterday along with another 30 or so Reprehensibles, I mean Representatives. Of both parties. I firmly believe we will not restore democracy in this country until the right-wing cleans its house of corruption and self-destructive ideologies (faux-christian conservatism). I have absolutely no faith in the Democrats getting their act together as a political party without some real leadership. At least not before the foreseeable collapse of the oil-based world economy. Then it will be a grass-roots rebellion against both parties and our ineffectual government in general.

I love computers and Ive never ever, in the depths of my despair, hated one until I met this Mac that my son brought home! I guess it depends on what youre used to.
Comment by Melina โ February 8, 2006 @ 8:59 am
melina – you’re probably right that it does depend on what you’re used to. but when i’m composing what i try to pass off as “music” on a mac, i feel that i’m just making music, not using a computer. the mac never gets in the way.
one thing that always makes me grateful that i’m using a mac is that, whenever i buy a external device, or whatever, the windows installation takes up something like 6 pages in the manual. the mac installation always reads something like:
For Mac users:
Plug in USB cord, turn on device and enjoy.
that sorta thing is especially welcomed when your manual is written in japanese only.
i’ve always felt, that with a mac, you don’t have to know anything about using a computer to get it to do whatever you want it to: whether it’s setting marc maron to “music” or posting a message to melina.
gosh…maybe its that I know too much…Im second guessing the thing.
hmmmm….
isi- I would capture a few hours of the stream just to be sure, until youve got it down. Ive made many mistakes myself…I guess you can always buy an AAR daypass but why do that if you can save a few hours around the show?
Melina, I don’t have a clue about capturing the stream.
Oh, Im sorry…I didnt realize you were thinking of staying up for it!;-)
You can capture the stream with replay for pc or wiretap for mac…replay is what I have and its really easy. Thats just if you want to save it or listen the next morning.
It is snowing this morning in st. louis. A wet snow that sticks to the trees but not the street. Picture Perfect. ๐
Okay, so I woke up to Rachel’s voice and the first thought that came to me was, “Maybe she should eat more dairy?” Her voice just isn’t pleasant. (Dairy would at least make it softer…more muffled.) The second thing that came to me was, “Did she just say Marc’s going to report on ‘The Real Grammies?’ Does that mean he’s just going to do a short bit of schtick?” I have a feeling that by this time tomorrow we still won’t know anything about “The Marc Maron Show.”
I do want to see a recent photo of Marc. “Big hair?” Sounds scary.
As for Kent Jones, he does seem to tailor his voice to the host he’s working with. He sounds so much harsher when working with Rachel than he does when working with Randi. Is it because it’s a different sound set up or something? I don’t know.
Ol’Zeb, when you wake up, I want you to know that somewhere in my dream last night you were regaling folk (under the overpass where Saturday Market is held later in the year, and there were a bunch of truck drivers there) with elegant bad jokes. :rofl2:

PJ, Hear Hear!! to your opening comments this morning. Just imagine if we had had Limbaugh, Hannity, Matthews, O’Reilly commenting on Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement back in the 50’s and 60’s??? They would have been spewing the same nonsense they are spewing today. Such as, “why don’t those negroes behave themselves!”
:evil:Racist bastards.
Hi all. I haven’t been able to check in recently. I’m heavily involved in a political campaign. I ended up NOT being the candidate, but I’m thrilled with the guy they went with and I’m now on the executive committee. I think we have a shot at getting Count Chocula out of the U.S. House. Check out http://www.francisforuscongress.com
As far as the whole OS debate. I will admit I was a die-hard DOS/Windwos kind of guy for years. I despised Apple. Then I was forced to start using Macs for a graphics job and hated it. At first. Eventually they grew on me and now it’s all I’ll consider buying. Granted my background now is in graphics, but now I’m doing a lot of Web work and I still don’t have any interest in switching to Windows even though I’ve found Mac’s OS X to be pretty “buggy” but then how is that really any different from Windows?
People get in to religious wars over computer OS’s. I grew up with VMS, CP/M, and CDC Cyber NOS (anybody but Ol Zeb have any idea what those are, or have that early computer ailment, “paddlefinger”?). Still have a working VAX. However, in these modern times . . .
There is no operating system but Linux, and the GNU project is his Prophet.
re: Recording streams on a Mac. I’m not a Macster, but have a look at:
iRecordMusic and
Audio Hijack
Tom T, there was a time when Windows hardware installations were a bit tough, but that hasn’t been the case in a long time – I can’t think of an external device that I’ve had to do more than plug in in quite long time. Even internal devices are pretty simple. Of course, I rarely look at the installation manual. ๐
Macs, though….
One example I can think of was a Mac we bought for design work. Our publishing people needed Quark, and our old Mac was getting very tired, so we bought a new one. We were on a Novell network and of course there is no Novell client for Mac (you have to buy a third-party product, which is of course expensive, as most Mac things are), so we couldn’t use the shared network stuff. Well, Quark didn’t have a version at the time that would run on OSX (it wasn’t “carbonized” as the buzzword was). We were supposed to be able to run legacy apps in an OS 9 shell, but that didn’t work for Quark (Quark also sucks, IMHO, but that’s another story). So, I had to set it up to boot to 9 only. It didn’t have an CD Writer, so we bought an external USB one. That didn’t work in OS 9, but only in OS X, and some of the apps they needed to run only worked in OS X, not 9. So I had to teach them how to boot back and forth between OS’s so they could use them all (sometimes several times on one project). And of course fonts were always a big issue. You were supposed to be able to just choose whatever fonts folder you wanted, but that didn’t work either (in Quark). Some of the companies would only take ads in pdf. To get Quark to print to pdf required a song and dance where I’d have go to the “chooser” (or whatever it is; another reason I didn’t like the damn thing was the childish name everything seems have) and install the LaserWriter whatever “phantom” printer, and then set up the document to print – and a few other things I can’t think of – just to output a pdf. Then I’d have to go back and change to the default printer so they could print to that if they needed to. If it was just a one page thing, I could drop it onto Distiller, but for multple pages fuggetaboutit. Of course, I didn’t do it enough to remember exactly what I had to do, so I’d have to think about it and play around (and usually get frustrated, trying to right-click on things with a one-button mouse, which really used to irritate me) for a while. And the users would never be able to remember how to do it, either (which I thought was odd, because they were supposed to be Mac “people”). A lot of time down the tubes for something I could do in two seconds on a PC. And they used to get the thing locked up all the time, too, which wasn’t supposed to happen (I thought) on a Mac. In fact, I remember going to two different PhotoShop seminars where their Mac laptops locked up on them (and when that happens you pretty much gotta pull the battery out, ‘cuz they’re locked right up). By the way, ever see this Mac ad parody? Pretty funny.
Now, I know people love their Macs, and I really have nothing against them, but I just don’t see them as being so much easier to use (or even more stable) than Windows or even Linux. Hell, I didn’t even start playing with these things until I was old and my brain was atrophied (and I wasn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed to begin with), and I figured ’em out (at least to some extent; my biggest advantage is that I’m not afraid to break stuff).

In the fun world of American Industry you get a lot of strange computers when you have equipment that is 30 years old and you have to keep it operating because no one makes it any longer and/or management is to cheap to buy a new one. I have this Philips electron micro-probe that is used every day that was built in 1963. It used to have a Honeywell mini running it but somewhere along the line they replaced it with a PDP11 and RSX11M. Except for the 6AJ7’s in the Micro-probe preamp all the parts are still pretty much available so there must be lots of PDP11’s doing things around the world. We have this strange combo of LINUX based machines and Windows based machines. LINUX may be attractive for it being open source but upgrading specialized installations that require the drivers to be rebuilt is a royal pain in the rear. A couple of those machines are like 300MHZ P3’s and maybe even a 486 or two. I have a tek 585 scope that is good for keeping my cubical warm on cold days though.
Corporate crime and violence โ like pollution, hazardous products, corruption, health care fraud, death on the job โ inflict far more damage on people and society than all street crime combined.
This is uncontested.
Ask any corporate criminologist.
And yet, the Democrats failed to make corporate crime and violence a major issue in the 2004 campaign against the corporate Republicans.
As they failed to make the fabricated, costly war in Iraq an issue.
As they failed to make national health insurance an issue.
Three winning issues.
Three Democratic Party failures.
Some people โ like Paul Krugman writing this week in the New York Times โ canโt figure out why the Democrats canโt and donโt take advantage of these issues.
We have figured it out.
Most Democrats are tied into the same corrupt corporate system as the Republicans.
And they just canโt shake it loose. . .

The DLC was the biggest mistake the Dems ever made. It will be almost impossible to get the corporate money out of the system if the public has to pay out the bucks needed to field a candidate against the corporate interests.

Opus Dei Aims to Improve Its Image
By RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer
NEW YORK – The entrance to the national headquarters of the Roman Catholic group Opus Dei is the last place you would expect to find mention of “The Da Vinci Code.”
The conservative organization has spent the last few years trying to escape the best-seller’s shadow, after the novel portrayed Opus Dei as a murderous sect fixated on power and self-mutilation.
But now the low-profile spiritual community is starting a drive to improve its image ahead of a major film based on the book _ and that campaign begins at the group’s front door, where a sign invites fans of the Dan Brown novel to learn about “the real Opus Dei.”:rofl2::priest:
Hey, I could tell you stories about my Wang (talk about something to keep your office warm on cold days). ๐

Now here is the big caveat. What I am about to propose is crossing some lines that we canโt step back across. Itโs a two-step solution.
:priest:Step One: Bury the corpse of the Democratic Party.
:priest:Step Two: Make a corpse of the Republican Party.
This requires some chutzpah, and many wonโt be up for it. It means undermining the Democrats in 2006 over the question of the war.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 8) – Alan Shalleck, who collaborated with the co-creator of “Curious George” to bring the mischievous monkey to television and a series of book sequels, was found dead outside his home, and police were treating the death as a possible homicide.
The bloodied body of Shalleck, 76, was found Tuesday covered in garbage bags in the driveway of his mobile home. Police said it was there for at least a day before a maintenance man discovered it.

I think the Dems would be much better off if they told the truth about what US foreign policy has done to so many other countries since the Spanish American war when we started our empire. Having the rest of the world hate us is only the tip of the iceberg. Now with our overt aggression it will just be a matter of time before someone FedExes a couple of “devices” into the country and gets an email from FedEx confirming delivery about 2 minutes before a bunch of US real estate leaves the planet.

Sean remember that 63 years ago a country acting just like the US had invaded and occupied all of Western Europe and was sitting pretty as they planned an invasion of an relatively small island nation. The other countries around them seemed powerless in comparison. Then as they slept some 2500 B17’s, and B25’s blew one of their major cities off the face of the earth. It was at that point that most of their citizens knew it wasn’t going to be long before they were through. FedEx and technology just conveniently replaces the need for an air force. The clock is ticking….
Farmerkat; I thought of the same thing concerning PJ’s Wang but its all Wang’s fault for having that name.
Wow… Since when is it a fact the Hoover got Jack Kennedy and his brother killed ?? Hartmans’s book has it that the MAFIA got him killed. I wish Ms Rant wouldn’t be so matter of fact about conjecture.
Oh, man, I spent the whole morning surrounded by small children (I was helping do a self-assessment for our Head Start program) and all this talk of Wangs is making me uncomfortable.
Okay, I’m better now.
You know if one was to loosely connect the dots maybe Hartman is right and Bush is a shortened Italian name hence Bush = MAFIA. That would explain a lot.
Some people โ like Paul Krugman writing this week in the New York Times โ canโt figure out why the Democrats canโt and donโt take advantage of these issues.
Dear Paul: You know how the Harlem Globetrotters always win when they play the Washington Generals? Game after game, year after year, the Generals lose to the Globetrotters. That is not because the Generals are inherently less skilled basketball players–they’re not. The Generals always lose because they are PAID to lose. It’s their JOB to lose.

Janeane does a good job of explaining the current neocon political system operates. However, she, along with most liberals, do not bring in how liberals enable the extremists. Examples: Joshua Frank does a good job of bringing this out. Also Cockburn and St Clair’s “Dime’s Worth of Difference.”

Portland never really had a “super” ghetto. Well, perhaps Vanport, but it got washed away in a flood and the diaspora move the former citizens southward.
Mind you, Portland was a big place for the Klan, red-lining and other inequities, but no ghettos as one might find in, say, Chicago. There are no neighborhoods that were unsafe to drive/walk through. At 3AM, sure, but during the day there were no problems for white folks free passage. The other way ’round….

Vancouver Ave, Williams Ave, et al, in North Portland had vibrant Black communities. Night clubs, churches, real communities. As residents and specualtors flooded into Portland in the 80s real estate values (and subsequest property taxes) soared. Many long tern residents cashed out. First, Northwest with was transformed from warehouse and heavy industrial to frufru chrome and glass and million dollar apartments. It is creeping ever northward as the city leaders “plan” for another million people by 2020.
