Here we are again, another Sunday, another round of talking heads. Last week was birdshot Sunday, but this week I reckon it’ll be all about ports. Well, as long as we don’t have to look at Mary Matalin, how bad can it be?
It’s a Republican love-fest over at Press the Meat, as Timmy boasts an “exclusive” with the Gropenator himself, Ahnold “Duh Peeg” Schwanzenschtupper. Vow, ein eggskloosif mit Ahnold. Oy. First, though, Republican Peter King (isn’t he the Sports Illustrated guy?) of NY and Republican John “Hey, so what if she was old, I banged Liz Taylor” Warner of VA talk ports. Warner tells us why it’s a great thing to let another country control our ports (and how we should only be xenophobic when the President tells us to be xenophobic), and King will no doubt try to harummph enough to appease his constituents, but not so much that he alienates his masters. Then they’ll discuss how well things are going in Iraq, for everybody except the Iraqis, the US soldiers on the ground, and anybody else crazy enough to be there. Check you local listings, because, believe it or not, the freakin’ Olympics are still going on. I thought theses things were supposed to happen every four years, not last four years.
Over on CBS, Bob “Claudia” Schieffer has, um, well, I don’t know who he’ll have on Fazed the Nation this week, because they aren’t saying. Must be a secret (or maybe they had Don Knott’s scheduled). Gee, I sure hope it’s Bill Frist and Joe Lieberman. They could get them to reenact a few scenes from Brokeback Mountain.
This Weak with George Snufalufagus has John “Sell Out” McCain and Carl Levin on to talk ports and Iraq. Hey, maybe Saddam Hussein can manage our ports (he’s got fewer ties to 9/11 than Dubai does). Let’s see how tight a leash the Bushies have McCain on this week. On the roundtable, there’s former Pentagon mouthpiece (and one of Mary Matalin’s bestest buddies) Torie Clarke, WaPost op-ed writer E.J. “Pass the Grey Poupon” Dionne, George :jerk: Will, and, providing a little bit of color to this vanillapalooza will be Fareed “Token” Zakaria. Finally, Richard “Got Any Gerbils” Gere (from North Syracuse, I might add) apparently has “a message [for] President Bush on the issue of AIDS in India.” I’m sure dubya will be watching closely.
Over at Fux News Someday with Chris “Dork” Wallace, it’s Port Talk, with Homeland Security Adviser Fran “Who?” Townsend (think they’ll ask her why DHS initially objected to the port deal, before being told to shut up?) and Senator MBNA himself, Joe Biden. Then it’s Republican Governor Mitt Romney of MA, and, um, Joe Gibbs, for some reason.
Later, on 60 Minutes, Ed Bradley talks to voodoo magic witchdoctor Hans Keirstead about the evil Stem Cell research, and walking rats, Lesley Stahl talks coal with Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, and Steve Kroft talks to Stephen Flynn (who actually knows stuff, unlike everybody else you’ll hear from today) about port security. Oh, and if Andy Rooney hasn’t died yet, he’ll probably be whining about colored paperclips or something.
Over at CNN…. Well, who really cares?
Well, I think I’m going to start reading “The People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn. It’s a fat book, so I think I’ll probably lose interest within the first chapter or two. But, for the moment, I’ve got this crazy idea of sitting down with a jug :40: of coffee and zoning into the pages. I have this problem of reading things and then totally blanking them out. Hopefully, I can overcome that stupidness.
Oh, well, who watched Forrest Gump last night on ABC? I did, partially, anyway…If you haven’t noticed, I didn’t really have anything to say, so I’ll just depart with this…:peace:
Until you sheeple wake up, I’ll be :paranoid:(not paranoid)
ding! dong! -> Good morning, travis! You’ve got company! I have read portions of that book, but have yet to start at the front and work towards the end, trav.
Beautiful! Submit that to vent@ajc.com, pj, you’ve got a winner there!
From reviewing the Sunday Cliff Notes, it looks like a good reading day. Need to walk the dorks. It rained here no-stop yesterday. The dogs are restless.
Is this guy related to Bush & Co:?: Talk about denial:
good morning everyone…restless night again here of trying to figure out if I should go down to the urgent care and get a chest xray…seems I have pneumonia or something like it. Its very bad and the antibiotics dont seem to be doing much. I keep hoping theyll kick in.
Looks like a pretty dead day on the sunday shows. Might catch some of em early…why dont those olympics end?
They seem long this time dont they?
Moom is upset about repug spin on ports…why does she watch their shows? She wants to know the enemy.
This is so bad on so many levels and thank god that it touches a level that average joe-schmoe in the middle of the ocuntry can get his mind around….but good to ask the question of why are we outsourcing these things? It may be a global economy and all but in a post 9-11 world it has to all be looked at again…so that is a good thing.
We have a primary here on March 6th or 7th….I didnt realize it was so soon! Is that the primary for the mid-terms?
The people who run the campaign for the guy against lieberman just called me to help them…and of course I cant do anything right now…but if the primary is in a coule of weeks how can the guy hope to win?
Maybe Im confused?
That Bode Miller…man….I know that there is added stress when youre the golden boy and on the covers of magazines and stuff…but this is something else, like addiction ,talking. Poor guy. Either hes way immature and unable to handle things in general or hes just totally screwed up. He has every reason to mess up in his sport considering whats happened to him fame wise, but his attitude is pretty scary. I guess hes hitting all the hot spots!
the “spots” are all over the freaking country. The could have just written, Iraq is Trouble.
Iraq Trouble Spots
Hey Farmerkat, I was destracted by the internet, so I didn’t quite get as far as I wanted to in the book. Then I was destracted by the tube, so that’s like double plus bad, or something. Yeah, so I’m getting really tired. I think I’ll crash now. Um, Bode Miller, is that the hang-over skier guy? Yeah, I’ve heard he grew up in the boonies or something, so that has to play a part in his personality… I’m crashing now
:spank:Columbus really messed up the Arawak
Melina, shouldn’t you be at least feeling a bit better, not worse? As much as I despise going to a doctor’s office, my blog diagnoses is that your need to go! (hey if frist can do it from a video tape, I can diagnose from a blog!)
good night, trav!
I’m off to let the dogs get the vinegar out of them. Feel better, Melina!
Gov Schweitzer on C-span ::omg::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:
When he gets though being the Mont governor he can be a stand up comic on late night TV
Hey Trav. Thanks for the visit. I need a a day off once in a while man! Oh, there are more posts now….:40:
Mornin seditionists! :fist:
Hey, no problem, Jason. I really have to sleep, so I’ll write you sheeple later.
Oh, and if it’s really bad, Melina, your health is nothing to mess around with, so you should do what you can and not be lethargic about it. Hope you get well soon.
Later sheeple
Night night Trav!
Howdy, all! Has someone already posted this? For whatever it’s worth….
Secret Service agents say Cheney was drunk when he shot lawyer
By DOUG THOMPSON
Feb 22, 2006, 07:35
Secret Service agents guarding Vice President Dick Cheney when he shot Texas lawyer Harry Whittington on a hunting outing two weeks ago say Cheney was “clearly inebriated” at the time of the shooting.
Agents observed several members of the hunting party, including the Vice President, consuming alcohol before and during the hunting expedition, the report notes, and Cheney exhibited “visible signs” of impairment, including slurred speech and erratic actions.
According to those who have talked with the agents and others present at the outing, Cheney was drunk when he gunned down his friend and the day-and-a-half delay in allowing Texas law enforcement officials on the ranch where the shooting occurred gave all members of the hunting party time to sober up.
More here.
Wait, maybe I shouldn’ use the word lethargic. Maybe I mean indecisive… I don’t know. Words are funny. I don’t want to make anyone mad
Falkland fear as Argentina steps up show of strength
From the Scotsman:
http://news.scotsman.com/politics.cfm?id=296232006
AN INCREASINGLY anxious UK government is closely monitoring a build-up of Argentinian military strength and a series of confrontations with the RAF close to the Falkland Islands, Scotland on Sunday can reveal.
The activity has led Tony Blair’s most senior advisers to demand he issues a “hands-off” warning to Buenos Aires.

The people in the southern hemisphere taking back their countries ??
I just dont want to be on line at the urgent care place with eveyone from my town who cant afford insurance…thats alot of people and people who work all go to the clinic/emergency on weekends…so Ive been putting it off. But its pretty bad.
Thanks everyone… am trying to get things stable here with the dogs and kid so I can go.
Hey, Melina. Glad you are going to seek help. I was just about to suggest you do it when I saw your last post.
Don’t take the time to address this before you head out, but I hope you’re going to the ER and not the urgent care facility. Or is it the same by you?
You might want to have your doctor (whoever prescribed the antibiotics) paged . . . maybe he or she will meet you at the hospital or make a phone call to whisk you through once you get there . . . ?
:doh:How could you guys let me get away with misspelling distract!? I had already turned off my computer before I actually thought about what I wrote. So, maybe next time one of you sheeple can give me a clue, or something(in a nice way). Now I really have to pass out.
Nevermind, I just haven’t slept in a while:billcat:
Travis, I can’t speak for anyone else, but sometimes I scan the posts so quickly I don’t even notice the occasional typo. (The eye see what it wants to see.) Of course, that probably means I shouldn’t obsess about typos of my own, either . . .
Hey–there’s a typo in my post!
:rofl2:
Becky, I’m skeptical only because it’s Capitol Hill Blue, which isn’t the most reliable source in the world. It would not surprise me if Cheney were plastered that day, even if it’s only a drug interaction with his heart meds. But I’d need better sourcing than CHB.
Meanwhile, folks, Doug Kreeger rocks.
Yesterday I sent e-mail to both Kreeger and Jon Sinton thanking them for their work in getting Maron back on the air (I recommend we all do it). I got a reply back from Kreeger WITHIN FIVE MINUTES.
Here’s his reply, and my original message:
Jill:
Thanks for your note. A lot of folks worked hard to make this work. I know I’ll be listening. Thanks for your patience and dedication.
Best,
Doug

I want to thank you for the role you played in bringing Marc Maron back to the Air America Radio airwaves. As you no doubt know by now, the Morning Sedition program created a community of loyal listeners that most radio shows only wish they could generate. Much of the environment which allowed this community to foster was created by Marc Maron, in his willingness to share of himself over the air and make himself accessible to the show’s fans. The man has a unique kind of brilliance, and I can’t even begin to express how grateful I am that you were able to see beyond whatever conflicts he had with the current CEO of Air America and do what had to be done to bring him back to the air.
I’ve been a loyal AAR listener from the beginning, and I lost my enthusiasm for the network after the appalling decision to cancel Morning Sedition. With your yeoman work in doing what had to be done to get Marc Maron on the air, I am back in the fold.
Thank you again.

W00t! 2 more days, kidlets! I have my Replay AV all set up and I have told Mr. Brilliant he has to work on the new PC from now on because it MUST be connected between 1 and 3 AM NY time.
:banana::banana::banana::40::40:
Also….
If you haven’t seen Keith Olbermann’s masterpiece skewering of Bill O’Reilly’s petition to get him off the air, catch it here.
becky, thx for your post. why oh why isn’t the headline on every single american newspaper today?????
randi talked about what the secret service agent said this week. she said if someone is drunk and shoots someone, a felony has been committed. then i heard NOTHING else about it from the msm. 😡
sidney blumenthal has an interesting take on cheney and the unitary executive theory (from salon.com link):
I have just downloaded ReplayAV and am in the process of configuring it. When I schedule Marc’s show, should I set it for CA time or NY time?
(NY time being where I am.)
Okay . . . and do I want to “capture by recording audio output” or “capture by downloading”?
(I know all this has probably been explained before, but until Marc’s official announcement I wasn’t bothering myself about it.)
Keith Olberman is hilarious :rofl2:
Someone posted that secret service story here from a different source I think.
Where can you get Replay AV. I guess I have to think about it too.
Hey there CK. Use your local time, since it’s your computer that has to figure out what time to start. I’d use capture by downloading, since that doesn’t use your computer’s sound card (which means, among other things, that you can capture more than one stream at the same time, plus if you happen to be using your computer at the same time, you won’t get all the computer noises in your recording, and you can actually capture a couple of different streams while listening to another – bandwidth permitting, of course). Not all streams can be captured by downloading, so you miht want to do a test run to be sure (in fact, I have yet to come across one that I can’t capture by downloading). Since the show doesn’t start until Tuesday, we have tonight and tomorrow to test, which is cool. There’s another option to just save the raw stream (Real or Windows Media, depending), or convert it to mp3. If you want to put it on a portable mp3 player, you’ll want to save it as an mp3. I save all of mine as mp3.
Now that you hve this thing, you might want to check out RadioTower. You can also use the ReplayAV guide to find/add shows, but make sure you chaeck them, because they aren’t always accurate (really simple to use when they work, though).
Have fun.
ReplayRadio
Olbermann’s great. We just watched the Friday night show last night, and I guess O’Reilly’s got a petition to get him off the air, and replace him with Donahue. Olbermann busted on him big-time (as usual); it was great.
Thanks PJ. I guess I’ll be opening another Pandora’s computer trying download and figure this out.
It’s pretty simple to use, really. Download it and play around before you pay for it. You can capture up to 15 minutes before you register, which is enough to see if it’ll work for you.
Thanks for the tech support, PJ! You have the patience of a saint!
:priest:
I’m configuring my ReplayAV thing as well and have a question. (Sorry if this has already been discussed.) Would it be better to capture the stream from AAR or from the host station in LA? Any real difference?
As for Marc, I don’t know if his show will be on AAR. For the other shows, the times are different than the AAR stream for most of them, so you have to take that into account. Also, I don’t think KTLK has that godawful jazzac crapola during the breaks.
I think ReplayAV ought to offer a Morning Seditonists discount, since we seem to be selling a number of copies for them.
It didn’t seem like Marc’s show would be on AAR except on the weekend.
Yeah, I think they just want to use him to pimp their premium service, and maybe have a “best of” on the weekend, ala Hartmann.
No shit? So we HAVE to record it from KTLK? Which isn’t a problem, it’s just very, very confusing….
Well, I don’t know for sure. So far there’s no info on AAR’s site (as far as their schedule) or on KTLK.
You’d think that Marc would be preferable to Al Franken reruns on the live stream, but who knows. There seems to be some question as to what XM will carry, but if Marc is on the live feed on AAR, he should be on XM.
It sure would be nice if KTLK would give Ed Schultz the boot, and slide everybody else up 3 hours. I feel kinda bad for Malloy. First WLIB sells him out of the NY market for the Satellite Sisters, and now he gets pushed back (one would assume) to midnight – 3AM in LA.
Later all. It’s laundry time!!:banana::jerk:
Ok, Im back and still alive. Its apparently a severe viral bronchitis (which I dont think Ive ever had before,) and they didnt want to do a chest xray…whatever…as long as they feel like Im not gonna die before Marc’s show comes on Im OK. They gave me some codeine cough syrup so I expect Ill be sleeping the rest of the day. This really sucks.
At least I beat the crowd. When I was leaving the waiting room was full.
So, I came home to Ahhnnoollld on with Timmy boy. How is it that anyone wants to hear what this guy says? He is uneducated and knows nothing about what hes talkng about! So, why do Americans elevate actors and bodybuilders to office where they should know something? Just because he can run a movie company and act doesnt mean he can run a whole state!
I was disgusted to find in my local paper at the hospital that all the state and local Dem leaders are gonna endorse Lieberman. Farrell who is running against Shays is endorsing him because he endorsed her…huh? Considering that Shays and Lieberman are butt buddies and they live in Bush’s butt…well, I guess it WAS hard for him to endorse the person running from his own party…but come on!
Unless the can say that it is because they need Lieberman’s seniority or they feel like LaMOnte cant win against who the Repugs are running, I feel like its all ho’s scratching eachother’s backs…
But then, I HAVE to vote for Farrell if she is on my ballot because Im not gonn a vote for Shays and Im not gonna vote 3rd party right now…if there even was a third party person running for this seat. If Lieberman is the nominee then I guess Ill have to vote for him…if I can stand it. God I hate him!
I am so happy to hear everyone setting their replays…I have to do that too! We should all meet here Wednesday evening after PJ is back from hell day and listen together and blog.
…and finally…
(Im trying to move up on the most postings list…)
Can I translate this into terms that web morons like myself can understand?
Starting Tuesday, If you don’t live on the left coast, your options are:
1. spring for the $50 replay AV program;
2. pod cast [i don’t own one of these, being old and broken down]
3. listen at 10PM PST on your computer, while assuring your wife that you’re not staying up to ungodly hours to download porno.
Is there no way to download and save the live KTLK feed for listening later using the shareware versions of realplay or windows media player?
Can we safely assume that at this point AAR is sitting back and doing nothing to help, like by archiving these shows.
I also assume that KTLK isn’t going to do it.
No chance that the indominatable PJSauter, or snot green sea, are going to archive the new shows for us poor suffering folks?
You mean I’m going to actually have to do my work from 9 -5 and not listen to Maron?
The authorities will be duly informed of this outrage.
And did anyone catch little tommy friedman playing liberal this morning? it was soooo cute…
It really ticks me off that this Arab thing is so all over the place. I wish that Dean or someone would come out and say that the big point here is that our ports should not be outsourced and they we have to pull back all ports, borders, and travel stuff to be just run by US companies, and preferably the government! Unless they are gonna get the El-Al guys to set up security, I dont think that any of this stuff should be run by any foreigners.
Crest- #4 is that you can subscribe to the podcasts from AAR. They will then give you access to the whole archive depending on the plan you buy. The thing is that its something like over $60 per year, whereas if you spring for the replay a/v you can use it forever and for everything. You could also get replay radio which is cheaper but will only record one stream at a time. You may find that as you use it, you want to record a few things to have handy so you never have to listen to anything you dont want and wish you had the a/v, but thats up to you.
Im using replay for everything…and I save alot of content all the time. You dont need an iPod…you can burn to CD or listen on your computer….or get a cheapie player and just load with a few shows at a time.
Oh Crest- #5 is that you can subscribe to XM and get the MyFi player which saves 5 hours of programming for you and is portable…and offers a ton of other programming. But you have ot lay out alot more cash for that.
Youre lucky to be on the west coast and to be able to listen at 10….Though even if I was I expect I would save it for morning. I need the funny in the morning more than the night!
It looks like the “Left of the Dial” DVD is out. If you haven’t seen mention, get a load of this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BBOU9K/104-7399662-7242307?v=glance&n=130
Woo-hoo!
Remember when Brendan McDonald and company were talking about making another version of this with their own snide commentary?
Sad as it is.. I think that the way for me is to go for thge AAR service.
I don’t want to miss a minute. When I am on the road I shut down my home computer and the laptop gets so hot for two hours. I listen to most things in the car on the ipod.
I also have no confidence that my local station in Seattle will carry the show. They completely screwed up the lineup even before morning sedition was cancelled and I stopped listening pretty much when they never responded to one single comment about the changes they made.(Al franken is in afternoon drive time in place of Randi and she is on in the evening in place of Janene and Sam.)
I don’t miss any of those commercials.
I am assuming though that the commercials will make their way to the podcasts eventually.
“More coffee mister?”
Anyone here subscribed to AAR premium? How’s it going?
Melina -take care of yourself and thanks for the relay radio info.
OH and PJ!
Thank you for keeping us all somewhat sane during these depressing times. I plan to keep hanging here:tongue:
cresttwo–with your question, you took the words right out of my mouth. I’m still trying to figure out the heck I am going to listen to marc, when I know it’s impossible to listen live (I’m on the east coast), and an ipod is not in my future, for the moment. my husband suggested, as a cheaper alternative, I might get these headphones, or even a speaker, that would enable me to listen to my computer, while I’m running all over the house chasing my 3 1/2 year old.
melina, pj, others–thanks for the help wading through the tech madness. to say it’s not my strong suit doesn’t even begin to describe my cluelessness.
Gore Vidal is ripping on RFK on David Bender’s show.:omg::rofl2:
Great show!
Gore is killing the myth of Bobby Kennedy. Gore despised RFK.
Gore loves Bobby Jr. (I do too.)
Likes Teddy, too. (Ditto!)
Adolph Reagan: Repigs are trying to build him up. Not of the modern age–unlike Gorbachev. “We cannot go on living like this.”
Reagan: Nancy was taken by Gorby’s words. Helped change administration’s direction.
Gore: Reagan was a very good “A” actor!:omg: All the instincts of a popular figure.
I admit that I have a pathological hate for Reagan. When I was in school, I thought he was going to create an American Nazi regime. I could not believe that so many people fell for his sleazy politics. Little did I realize that many dems went along with his policies. New Deal killing policies.
Well, let’s see. There is freeware out there for recording streams and/or your soundcard output. Here’s a page with some, and here’s a google search you can try, too. I haven’t tried any of these, so I can’t attest to how well they work. I have Nero, which includes a utility to record your soundcard output, but of course the catch is you have to get it started (and stop it). Some of those freebies seem to include a timer, so they may work out OK.
As for podcasting, you can’t do that unless you subscribe to AAR premium. KTLK may possibly provide podcast archives (they do for their own shows, but I kind of doubt AAR will allow them to do it for Marc’s show). AAR will presumably archive the shows, but again, only for premium members.
You can stream the show live on your computer and surf porn at the same time, though it might be difficult to concentrate on one or the other, and you’ll have to watch your sound levels to avoid attractiing attention.
Back when I had Sirius, I bought an FM transmitter from CCrane that I used to turn my house (and about a half block radius around it) into an AAR affiliate. It will work with the output form your computer soundcard (or even your mp3 player), too, so you could listen that way around the house. I do that with mine – works great in the car, too; much better signal than those little car ones have. It was a little pricey ($69, I think, on “special”), and to improve the range, there’s a little plastic cover you can pry off, and then an adjustment screw).
As for subscribing to XM, you might want to wait and see if Marc will actually be on. I had XM before I had Sirius, and I get their music stations on DirecTV, which I like. I actually preferred Sirius’ programming (not the music, so much, but 2 NPR’s and PRI, plus the Wisdom channel and a few others), but w/o AAR, there was just nothing for me there anymore.
As for posting the show, that would be problematic now that AAR has introduced their pay service, and making the shows available via the Internet would probably not be something they’d take kindly to (or ignore).
So, I guess I’d try the freeware to see how it works, first, though I have to admit the ReplayAV works very well, and the fact that it’s easy to use and stable (and does what it says it does, which is kind of unusual these days) was worth the $ for me (considering it was cheaper than a year of AAR premium; frankly, Marc’s show is the only thing worth paying for, IMHO).
Oh, if you can get the show on the radio where you’re at and you have a VCR, you can record it that way (assuming you have a stereo where you can set the output to the radio, and then record the line in on your VCR; I used to record lots of stuff that way).
Check your email Nicki. :bow::rabbi::priest::?::?:
George Bush. Stupid President. Not qualified. Media is corporate controlled. They go along with Bushco. Lazy. Not doing its job.
Rove gang is machiavellian. Kerry is war hero; Rove attaks him for being a coward. Media loves it.
Onto death of empire. In 1940 Depression had came back. (After WWll) 13,000,000 need to find jobs. Militarize the economy. Keynesianism. Military keynesianism. Ala Germany. Re-arm. Air power. Build up air force. Get into atomic weaponry. Military-Industrial complex!
“Is there hope for the Republic?”
Those machines. Votes are not being counted. The Conyers report was not mentioned in one newspaper. Nothing on the stolen election in Ohio. How to change attitudes?
End of part one.
Why? Are we to cease and desist on this blog?:omg::rofl2:
If you want a balanced version of the Reagan story [believe me, its a bleak and dispicable tale without the need to editorialize] check out the new Richard Reaves book about Reagan – I got it from my library, and its a great quick read that shows, in very entertaining fashion, where so much of this faith-based government came from.
As to the “how do we listen to Maron” controversy, thanks for your tech help, guys, but i’ll be damned if i want to give AAR a single penny at this point.
I have been struck with how bloody awful most of the KTLK programming is, since i’ve been listening in, just for practice, from time to time. With all this wealth of truly crappy offerings cluttering the public airways, how is it possible that no other more local station [i.e. east coast] will pick up and stream Maron for us at a more convenient time? What’s pathetic WLIB in NY so damn busy doing? At this precise time, they’re running a one hour infomercial for Carribean tourism thinly disguised as an interview show. The ‘host’ can’t even remember his ‘guests’ names!
Its still funnier than Randi Rhodes, or the Satellite Sisters, anyway.
Holy Maronite Church, Batman!:omg::rabbi::rabbi::rabbi::nixon:
:omg::omg::omg::omg::omg::omg::omg::omg::pent::priest::rofl2::rabbi::jesus::sdavid:
What’s up with the AAR site. It seems to have been decimated by a virus from hell.
:omg:
:omg:ahhhhh a fox news alert!!!!!
Well, it is possible. AAR’s syndication wing is supposed to be getting syndication deals for stuff like Maron and Hartmann. However, I have my doubts as to whether they knwo what they’re doing, or have anybody out there trying to work out syndication deals. Also, to get it on a good time here in the East, you’d need to delay it quite a few hours. I guess you could make it a morning show (say, 9 – noon Eastern when “you know who” is on). I guess now we now how the folks out West felt when they put Morning Sedition on live.
But, here’s hoping that Marc’s show is a big hit, and it gets picked up widely – maybe even moved to an earlier time slot, eventually. Or maybe he’ll get a weekly HBO show (Real Time with Marc Maron, maybe?). I’d really like to see that cast of characters get to do something where they don’t have to worry about the FCC.
:rofl2:Just because he can run a movie company and act doesnt mean he can run a whole state!
HA very funny melina very very funny of you to suggest that he can act or run a movie company so very very funny ok well i am going to get back to my really bad appetizer and read the rest of the posts
Sam Seder will be subbing for Al Franken all this week !
ha maybe frankens screeners will let me through with my message for him from marc!!!!!
:spank:so where did all the posts go yesterday and today?
:shock:slackers!!!!!
Hey, I’ll have to record the show, then. I kind of quit listening to Al when I wasn’t in front of a computer working all day. It really bugged me when he’d spend four mintues singing some guest in, and then he’d have to cut the interview short when he ran out of time. I got pretty tired of Mark Luther, too. No matter how much you show him what an idiot Limpballs is, he just doesn’t care. A lot like Janeane’s dad. At soem point, there’s just no point in tryign anymore.
Plus, I started to realize Al’s a little too DLC for me.
Hey, I thought y’all might be interested in Sideload.com. It’s a free music place, where you can listen to a bunch of free songs, and if you like them, “sideload” them into your “locker.” It doesn’t have everything on the world, but there’s some interesting stuff. And it’s free, which is always good.
It’s even got that “jaunty” version of “Wish You Were Here” that Malloy uses.

Teacher Awaits Day in Court
By Matthew Rothschild
January 25, 2006
Deb Mayer was a teacher of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders at Clear Creek Elementary School in Bloomington, Indiana, during the 2002-2003 school year.
On January 10, 2003, she was leading a class discussion on an issue of “Time for Kids”—Time magazine’s school-age version, which the class usually discussed on Fridays and which is part of Clear Creek’s approved curriculum.
There were several articles in the magazine that discussed topics relating to the imminent war against Iraq, and one that mentioned a peace march.
According to Mayer, a student asked her if she would ever participate in such a march.
And Mayer said, “When I drive past the courthouse square and the demonstrators are picketing, I honk my horn for peace because their signs say, ‘Honk for peace.’ ” She added that she thought “it was important for people to seek out peaceful solutions to problems before going to war and that we train kids to be mediators on the playground so that they can seek out peaceful solutions to their own problems.”
Mayer claims in a pending federal lawsuit that the school chilled her First Amendment rights because of this one conversation in class, which she says took all of about five minutes, and that the school district refused to renew her contract because of it. (The quotes above are taken from court documents.)
I spoke with Mayer on January 24—more than three years after this incident took place.
“It didn’t dawn on me that people would object to me saying peace was an option to war,” she says. “I didn’t even think it was controversial.”
But it sure turned out to be.
“One student went home to tell her parents that I was encouraging people to protest the Iraq War,” she says. “The parents called the principal and demanded to have a conference. The dad was complaining that I was unpatriotic. He was very agitated. He kept raising out of his chair and pointing his finger at me and yelling, ‘What if you had a child in the service?’ I said, ‘I do have a child in the service.’ ”
At the time, one of Mayer’s sons was a naval nuclear engineer aboard the USS Nebraska, she says, adding that he’s now an officer in Afghanistan.
She told the parent, Mark Hahn, that her son also “doesn’t preclude peace as an option to war,” she recalls. “And that made him even angrier.”
At the end of the meeting, Hahn insisted that the principal, Victoria Rogers, make Mayer refrain from talking about peace again in the classroom. “I think she can do that,” Principal Rogers responded, according to Mayer’s deposition. “I think she can not mention peace in her class again.”
“I was just floored,” Mayer says, “but I said OK because we had a parent out of control, and I didn’t want to be insubordinate. I thought that would be the end of it.”
It wasn’t.
At the end of that day, Principal Rogers circulated a memo, entitled “Peace at Clear Creek,” that said: “We absolutely do not, as a school, promote any particular view on foreign policy related to the situation in Iraq.” And she cancelled the annual “peace month” that the school had been holding.
On February 7, 2003, Rogers also sent Mayer a letter telling her to “refrain from presenting your political views.”
Mayer and her lawyer, Michael Schultz, contend that this illegally infringed on Mayer’s First Amendment rights.
At the end of the spring semester, the school district did not renew Mayer’s contract, and she and Schultz allege that this was in retaliation for her political expression.
“This is a classic First Amendment free speech case,” says Schultz. “It involves, for the first time as far as I can tell, the right of a teacher to express an opinion in a classroom while teaching approved curriculum.”
The school district, the Monroe County Community School Corp., takes a different view.
While neither Principal Rogers nor anyone at the school district would respond to my phone calls because the case is pending, the district is mounting an aggressive legal defense. Represented by the law firm of Locke Reynolds in Indianapolis, the district is seeking summary judgment, asking the judge to throw out the case.
I called Heather Wilson, one of the Locke Reynolds attorneys on the case, but she would not comment, suggesting only that I examine the court documents.
“Ms. Mayer’s one-year contract was non-renewed after ongoing parent complaints about her and her teaching style, and five students being transferred out of Ms. Mayer’s classroom at the parents’ request,” says the brief for the school district. And it summons affidavits from parents finding fault with Mayer’s teaching style.
The brief does not deny the Iraq War discussion took place, or that the Hahns got upset by it. In fact, it acknowledges that Mayer was instructed to refrain from discussing her opinions on the war. But the brief says that during the parent conference on the subject, “according to Principal Rogers, Ms. Mayer was borderline unprofessional.” And it states further that the Hahns alleged that Mayer continued to talk about the war in class, a charge she denies.
The gist of the district’s case, as outlined in its brief, is this: “Ms. Mayer’s speech on the war was not the reason for her ultimate termination. Instead . . . the motivating factor for her termination was her poor classroom performance, the ongoing parental dissatisfaction, and the allegations of harassment and threats towards students.”
Schultz, in his court filing in response to the request for summary judgment, rebuts this argument. He says the affidavits about poor performance are pretexts. They “were signed in the summer of 2005, more than two years after Plaintiff’s termination. . . . Those alleged complaints about Ms. Mayer were not and could not have been relied on by Principal Rogers in making her decision to terminate Plaintiff’s contract with the school.” He also cites an evaluation that Mayer received that had praised her effusively.
Schultz says that Mayer deserves her day in court not only because of what he calls the “wrongful termination” but also because her First Amendment rights were violated.
Mayer says at one time the school district did offer to settle—for $2,500. She had already spent ten times that amount, so she refused it, she says. Plus, she wants to defend the free speech rights of teachers. “If the school prevails on this, teachers have no protected speech at school and can be fired for saying anything,” she says.
The case has cost Mayer dearly, she says. “I have lost my house, my income, my health insurance, my life savings, and my prospects for employment.”
If the judge does not grant summary judgment, the case will begin on March 6.

As Prepared
Good morning. Thank you for that kind introduction.
It’s an honor to be here today. I would like to thank CSIS for hosting this discussion of American foreign policy and the International Criminal Court.
Let me get right to the point. And then I’ll try to make my case in detail:
Here’s what America believes in:
We believe in justice and the promotion of the rule of law.
We believe those who commit the most serious crimes of concern to the international community should be punished.
We believe that states, not international institutions are primarily responsible for ensuring justice in the international system.
We believe that the best way to combat these serious offenses is to build domestic judicial systems, strengthen political will and promote human freedom.
We have concluded that the International Criminal Court does not advance these principles. Here is why:
We believe the ICC undermines the role of the United Nations Security Council in maintaining international peace and security.
We believe in checks and balances. The Rome Statute creates a prosecutorial system that is an unchecked power.
We believe that in order to be bound by a treaty, a state must be party to that treaty. The ICC asserts jurisdiction over citizens of states that have not ratified the treaty. This threatens US sovereignty.
We believe that the ICC is built on a flawed foundation. These flaws leave it open for exploitation and politically motivated prosecutions.
Franken does good sound-bites. Sometimes he seems so silly that it goddamn funny. I am sure that he plans it that way. Wasn’t that his SNL gag, deliberate unfunniness becomes hilarious?:rofl2:
Last week on Steve Earle’s show, Lenny Kaye played Emmett Miller singing “Lovesick Blues.” His version is the one that inspired Hank Williams to record the song. Anyway, I became obsessed with finding a recording by Emmett Smith. I discovered that they are available, including, yes, 78 rpm recordings on ebay, as well as modern CDs. My problem is with the price of the moderns. $69.99+ for “Emmett Till: Minstrel Man from Georgia”. One damn disc of about 20 songs. Boxed collections of several discs cost that much. My William Burroughs Collection was around $70. Hell, the 78 shellac of Lovesick was going for around $26.50 right before the closure of bidding.
Emmett Miller–bandleader, minstrel, and yodeling crooner–is a true music legend. His version of “Lovesick Blues” was covered by Hank Williams, Merle Haggard recorded an entire Miller tribute album, Leon Redbone cites him as an influence, and author Nick Tosches has devoted an entire book to his fascination with the forgotten Georgian. What makes an obscure blackface musician who recorded just two dozen or so tunes in the late ’20s so special? A lot. Miller existed at one of those magical crossroads in American history. His music is a bridge between the sounds of hot jazz and the as-yet-discovered “country music,” and his crooning sound would be copied by Jimmie Rodgers and others, but never quite so compellingly. His music sounds like no one else’s and, despite the minstrel shtick he refused to shed long after it became unfashionable, his songs are absolutely, perfectly timeless. Miller’s backing band, the Georgia Crackers, was comprised of some of the best jazz musicians of his day (Eddie Lang, the Dorsey Brothers, Gene Krupa, Jack Teagarden), and they’re in top form on these tunes, including “Lovesick Blues,” “I Ain’t Got Nobody,” and “Anytime.” Included are a few of Miller’s recorded minstrel routines–archaic relics that can’t compare to his tunes. Anyway you look at it, he led a controversial lifestyle, but his recordings are just too influential to forget. –Jason Verlinde
Sometimes Al is very funny, no question about it. And he gets soem good guests, but a lot of his stuff reminds me of the last half hour of the old SNL, when they’d do sketches that had a nugget of funny in them, but not enough to do 10 minutes, and they’d kind of keep dragging on, and on, and on.
I saw Al at Syracuse University way back in the beginning of 2003, and a lot of the jokes he told that night are the same ones he tells now (or used to tell now – as I said, I don’t really listen anymore).
So, yeah, he’s a lot better than Rush or Bighead O’Reilly, to be sure. But I think they ought to just let him be Senator from Minnesota, and put Maron on in his slot.
I feel like a giant IDJIT but I can’t make Replay A/V work. Can’t do the URL finder thing and pretty often while I’m fiddling around I get a Microsoft error message that sez Raplay A/V has to close.
Guess it’s a good time to use this: :fustrate:
We believe the ICC undermines the role of the United Nations Security Council in maintaining international peace and security.
The Council has 15 members – five permanent members and 10 elected

So why are we opposed to the I.C.C.? Why would the bush administration suddenly support the U.N.? We continually undermine the U.N. ourselves by lying and bullying it but now we are concerned about the I.C.C. undermining it?
I think the real issue here is that our president fears that he will be arraigned by the international criminal court for his actions and therefore would rather the U.N. be in charge. As you can see the U.S. is a permanent member of the security council and would from that position be able to protect our president from prosecution if the U.N. were in charge. We are not opposed to the I.C.C. because we think it will be used improperly, we are opposed to it because the president knew he would be invading Iraq and did not want to be held responsible for the crime of aggression which he most certainly would be found guilty of.
ok well im off sheeple:fire:
keep on fighting:fist:
I don’t think I’d bother with the URL finder.
Do this:
Open up ReplayAV, and click on the Media Guide (lower left, just above Main Settings). A browser window will open up.
In that window, look for “Stations,” (up at the top, fifth one from the left) and click on that. Up comes the station search page.
Enter KTLK (for instance), click “Find Station,” and up will pop “KTLK 1150 AM Burbank, CA.” (It will also show programs that it knows about on KTLK, ignore that). Click on “ADD” next to KTLK, and KTLK will be magically added to your ReplayAV. You can then fiddle with the scheduling to set up Marc’s show, and change anything else.
To test, right-click on the new KTLK entry in your ReplayAV, and select “tune to station.” The live stream should start momentarily.
Hope that helps.
PJ is a friggin magician!!!!!
Good evening, seditionisti. And once again the ol’ computer is demanding a reboot but I just had to ask before I went…
I checked out the KTLK website and they’ve got Mike Malloy from 10 til midnight weeknights. Does anyone know, is Malloy being pushed back to accomodate Maron or is Malloy being kicked off KTLK? Because I know Malloy has a pretty loyal following and it would totally suck for him to lose out to Maron. The AAR personalities snarl at each other enough as it is!
Okay, now I think the pup and I are going to go have some quality nap time before Iron Chef comes on TV and I get to become totally zombified.
a libero-socialist zombie brigader of the neo-lib baby killer cult?
Hey, I’ve only briefly perused the last dozen posts . . . but THANK YOU, PJ!!!
I was having a heckuva time making this work, but it’s working now!!! I’ll be running tests tonight and tomorrow and hope to have something good to report sooner rather than later.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
:bow::bow::bow:
Hey Sean…I said schwartzbugger could run a studio and act, I didnt say he could do either well…though he has made alot of money. So, yeah, he seems to be able to do both. Just not my cuppa tea.
As a politician and governer I dont think that he has the knowledge that one needs to even direct people who know how to do things. There should be some sorta civil service exam for these posts.
I just played around with the replay a/v and found KTLk by browsing stations in the guide. For some reason the search didnt bring it up. From there I added it and then I scheduled it to start tomorrow night as a test. We’ll see how it works. I think this is the way to go.
dlp, can you burn CD’s from iTunes or another program with your computer because you can buy bulk CDs cheap and a cheap CD walkman thing and just burn the shows onto CD. But it seems like a cheapie MP3 would be just as good…any MP3 player will work and the replay doesnt really need alot of tech knowhow. It will put what you want directly into iTunes for you.
I find Al annoying in general. I really liked him with Katherine to keep him in line, but he is such an egotistical guy that if hes left alone he just sorta doesnt get what is workign or not,
PJ you are exactly right about that old Sat nite live feeling of things just being carried on too long…I think its poor editing.
I like that Al is so concerned with checking facts and that you can be pretty sure that his info is checked right to the bone, but I hate that he has become so PC and politician like. I also am less interested in the guests hes having since hes in the middle of the country, though I think its a good thing for the station to have him out there.
Im expecting to get Left of the Dial in the next couple of days!!! I saw it when it was first on and have been waiting for this release…
This should be a great week as long as I start feeling better, my stream works and I get my amazon box!
Hey PJ, maybe you sould make a Replay folder here so that you can just refer people to it…a FAQ…
Thanks for all the great tips. Its such a great program! Im so glad I have it!
:banana:inimitable = me
yikes, I just tried a test recording of ktlk, with replay radio, and got only radio silence. a message popped up telling me to update my sound card driver. :fustrate: this may be beyond my meager skills. they did refer me to the support section, which I may try, but this is starting to get complicated.:doh::doh:
:growl::rant1:one of you people are going to be e-mailing me the friggin funny!!!!! at least until it is on the xm damn it:mad:
That’s one of the reasons I spent the extra $10 and went with ReplayAV. You don’t need to to use your soundcard. Select “capture by Downloading” instead of “Capture by recording audio output” (this is on the “basic” tab, if you right-click on the show you want to try and record in the list, and select properties).
dlp- me too…my sound card isnt even compatible with replay but the downloading works just fine…and if IM saving via downloading I can use my soundcard for other things like to listen to something else or watch TV (which I have because I put a little card in, screwed the cable into it, and like magic there is TV on my ‘puter!)
Its good that youre testing it now so there wont be any screwups when its the actual time!
Sean, How do you email MP3’s…just the normal way or do you have to zip them?
I am about to sign up for some super fast thing that my cable company is offering because it comes with a big web space and extra email addresses and extra large mail attachments…and is cheaper than the spcae I have now….but does eveyone have the capacity to receive a 2-3 hour MP3 show via email? Can you just attach sound files to any old mail and send em like normal?
Oh well, I had to take some codeine again and am just in yucky land…now I remember why I dont drink or take drugs anymore…it feels so icky.
Am listening to Jeaneane from Friday…she is so smart and pretty funny but she has such an edge too….
uh when i e-mail mp3’s i just send them as attachments but i can only send them if they are under a certain mb’s freaking nina simone is awesome just in case any of you didnt know
so, PJ, I now tried replayAV (in the demo mode, because I’m not going to buy it until I know it’ll work.) I followed your instructions, and it didn’t work. I’m sure there’s something I am missing, but it’s probably too late in the evening to figure out. I refuse to spend more than 1.5 hours (which is about how long I’ve been working on this) at a clip.
sigh. :doh::doh::doh:
hopefully, I can find time before tues. night to try to work this out (but my weekdsys are insane), but it’s not very user-friendly.:mad::mad: at least to this somewhat sorry user. :rant1::rant1::rant1:
YEAH I AM E-MAILING NINA SIMONE TO PEOPLE FRIGGIN CAPS LOCK AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! okay better yeah so nina simone if you dont get it from me uh email me at seaniesean5@aol.com and you will get it word later homies
Well, we can certainly make sure you get the MP3’s….I am looking at MP3 editing software in the hopes of finding something that takes out commercials easily and quickly. I am so tired of fast forwarding through the muzak…I may have to find another stream to capture because I really believe that AAR is trying to hypnotize us all with that horrible muzak…who would ever select that? I wonder who is getting paid and/or a kickback for such crap.
And that teeth grinding commercial should be against the law!
What is wrong with the sales department of AAR? Why dont they give the time away if they cant sell it? They could give it to whoever is advertising on the regular radio as a package deal…it just looks so bad to have either no commercials or really sucky commercials.
I want to edit them out!
sean- send to me here
I want to see if I can get it…and also want to hear it though I have some of her stuff.
hey quietgirl :fu: dont pick on me and my misfortune of being stuck in a truck with an xm and no reliable ability to stream the friggin show thats not nice anyway hope they let you in later
:rant1:melina i am so with you on the teeth grinding commercial
now i must ask: how many of those things is kelly kaplan from paramus nj going to order? and where does she get all the money to keep ordering them? and arent you happy she does us the public service of stopping the grinding every time?
Dlp-if you want I can walk you through it tomorrow on the phone. Just email me hereand we can figure a time thats good. If you can talk to someone who has it set up properly and walk through the steps it should be quick.
I will be around tomorrow still recovering. maybe out around 3-ish for a bit to the Dr but thats it.
I’m happy to help if you cant figure it out.
If there is any problem, apparently any one of us can email the show to you as long as you can receive a big file.
I go so crazy trying to turn it off that Im not even aware of who is buying it or not….
Im all for it because I grind my teeth …but to “resort” to coersion” or whatever, is just such a horrible way to try to sell something…and I would never buy that brand because I hate that form of advertisement. Its like Crazy Eddie used to be. So annoying that you have to go there….and didnt crazy eddie end up in jail and broke?
So…what to do about Lieberman? I am at a loss….its just too horrible…I have to call the Lamonte people and see what they think.
He hasnt even announced yet. How is it possible that we are having the primaries in a couple of weeks and he hasnt announced?
Maybe Im confused, but it seems like there should be more time.
Nina Simone is great…thanks Sean!
How many Megs per 2 hour show, do you think?
hey did anyone see 60 mins report on the stem cell cure for paralysis? It seems like its really close and the young dr who is behind it is ready to try it on humans.
Im listening to my sammy stem cells on my ipod…really funny…I always forget how good this stuff is.
Depends on what you encode it at. The edited versions of MS at 1:52 minutes encoded at 24 kbps were about 20 MB. By the way, you can tell ReplayAV to split the files based on (among other things) time, so you could split the two hours into 4 30 minute segments that would probably e-mail OK (one at a time).
i have no clue?
Hey Melina, I have a campaign to end annoying commercials. Those advertizers will NEVER get my money because their commercials are so annoying. Some who have made my list are Old Navy, The Sunscreener(Now this truly is a boycott because living in AZ those could be pretty darned useful and I hate to boycott them but I don’t wanna hear poor Harry get nagged about the friggin discount), Ovaltine and there are others but I can’t think of them right now.
:paranoid:hey marons page isnt working!
:banana:i hope this means he finally got around to updating!
Cool, things are going just the way we want them to in Iraq.
Looks like Maron’s new web page will be at:
http://www.airamericaradio.com/maron/
It says it will officially launch on Monday, March 27.
Hey, sheeple! March, REALLY! Damn, that’s not good
:40: PJ, I think you’re tired, man.
With a face like that who needs Martin Short doing his nervous lawyer bit??
Why is anybody surprised that Bush is a fuck-up? He’s been a fuck-up all his life.
I just tried to log in on Maron’s new site and it just took too long to load or something. Maybe it’s being worked on.
Oops. February 27. I could swear I copied and pasted that. Too much reading, too much wine. Not enough hallucinogenics.
Yeah, KP, it doesn’t actually work (yet).
Yeah, now there is no front page, or whatever. I think they heard me knockin’ and shut the shit down. :40: Ah, yes, beer is good. What’s that Ben Franklin quote?…Anyway.
Oops, it’s back up again. I think they do it on purpose, to mess with me:doh:
Shit down. I like that. 😉
“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to prosper.”
Hmm, so I guess we could be split between Marc’s show blog and this one. I can’t imagine AAR having such cool emoticons and I have grown to love our li’l Ark. And I have less time these days, it’s been difficult to keep up with this blog much less Marc’s show blog. I think we are going to have to insist that Marc’s show blog import our emoticons. I cannot leave them behind 😥
:40:
Well, technically it’s the 27 on east coast, right?
So where is the site that they’re talkin’ ’bout?
Okay nite all, I have to work way out in Avondale this week which means having to leave earlier.:yawn:
When I try to go to Marc’s site, the thing in the bottom left corner of my web page is freakin’ out. It keeps changing from a globe with a magnifying glass to a hour glass. :omg:ARGGGH, now it says web site not found. More beer is the answer, I think:40:
:fist:henry fucking rollins “terrorist threat”
#30. 01-30-06 Melbourne Australia: 2139 hrs. I just got a letter from a nice woman who told me the man I sat next to on the flight from Auckland to Goldcoast Australia reported me to the Australian Government because of the book I was reading.
“I hope this finds you before you leave Australia as I think its something that won’t surprise you but might give you a smile when you are sitting in a hotel room. I work in one of those Government areas that deals with anti terrorism matters. A fine service is provided but unfortunately we get to read a lot of things submitted by lunatics. The Australian Government set up the National Security Hotline to report terrorists.
The person who sat next to you on the flight from New Zealand does not agree with your politics or choice of reading and so nominated you as a possible threat. As they were too cowardly or stupid to leave their details I can’t call them to discuss their idiocy with them.”
Interesting that he and I exchanged nothing but polite hellos. I was reading Ahmed Rashid’s book Jihad: The Rise Of Militant Islam In Central Asia. He’s a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal and the book is on the Yale University Press. Didn’t Bush drink beer at Yale? Didn’t he not seem to learn much at Yale?
Of course I wrote the nice lady back.
“I was reading a book called Jihad by Ahmed Rashid which is a history of Central Asia. I didn’t speak to the man next to me past how do you do. I think Ahmed Rashid is published by Yale University Press. Bush’s alma mater. Please tell your government and everyone in your office to go fuck themselves. Tell them twice. If your boss is looking for something to do, you can tell him I suggest he go fuck himself. Baghdad’s safer than my hometown and your PM is a sissy. You have a nice night.”
I really don’t take kindly to that kind of shit. I like it though. Love it. Confrontation. Tension. Adversarial relationships. More please. It’s the only time it gets real.
:doh:wow were not even gonna hit 200 posts on a sunday how pathetic and that is with melina breaking hers up into little posts
:fustrate:dont make me have to post 65 posts myself:fustrate:
