Here we are, Friday again. Week after week just keeps flying by, and this weekend, we’re screwed out of an extra hour to boot. Add to that the hour of Marc we’re getting screwed out of thanks to the Clippers game tonight. The Senate Judiciary is scheduled to take up Russ Feingold’s proposal to censure Bush today, so that might be interesting, especially with John Dean and Bruse Fein scheduled to testify. Arlen Specter is floating the idea that the measure could fail in committee, but be sent to the floor for a vote by the full senate anyway. I suppose the weasels are still doing their head counts, trying to embarass anyone who votes for censure. It sure would be nice if it backfired on them.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. and Mrs. FK today (as FK has her pre-op work done), and of course on Monday when she has her little “procedure.” Mike, you’d better take care of her, and, while we know you have more pressing matters to attend to, we’d all appreciate an update as soon as you get a chance.

Venezuelan Government To Launch International 9/11 Investigation
Quietgirl, thanks for the post. Enjoy your snooze.
Why do I get the feeling that if Chavez actually goes through with this, his investigation will uncover more information than OUR “investigation” did?
And why do I get the feeling that the MSM will COMPLETELY IGNORE THIS STORY??? :fustrate::fustrate::fustrate:
Thanks again, quietgirl. Sweet dreams.
Man, I suck at the Lotto. I’m never playin’ again! Good night, people.

This post took, like, maybe a second. So, how can some people not post anything at all, for days! I don’t get it.:jason:
IRAN seems to have so many earth quakes we could drop a daisy cutter on them and they would probably not be able to tell the difference.
Good Morning!
Ita AAR’s anniversary today apparently and Al is on the Today show at 7:11 AM….
the email that greeted me from the birthday station informed me that I am not a premium member so I cant hear the concert!…Isnt that kind of snotty?
PJ- isnt Kat having her presurgery workup today? I didnt think she was doing anything really big until the 3rd, unless they are putting in a central line or something…
In any case I’ll be waiting to hear how it went today.
In news we have a ferry capsized in Bahrain right up there with naomi campbell attacking her maid with a cell phone…ugh…TGIF…
The UAW says Delphi is going to break union contracts
With the Bushevics in office Delphi will pack up and move out, The UAW will strike GM and GM will then pack up and move out too.. just like the steel industry did in the 1980’s. By the time the democrats get their act together, assuming they do, there will be nothing left but empty parking lots with weeds growing up through the cracks.. Rachel will still be trying to make funnies though.
Actually I don’t find Rachel at all funny this morning.. I think I’m going to :barf:
Mornin’, :sheep:le!
I was up for a while in the middle of the night (which is why I was first) but then went back to sleep for a couple hours.
Quietgirl, I’m sure you’re asleep by now, but that’s an interesting development. I worry, though, that if Chavez pursues this, we might see Pat Robertson’s wish come true . . .
Good luck today, FK. And welcome home, Mr.!!!
:nixon:Happy Anniversary!:rofl2:
I would worry more about the US trying to make Pat Robertson’s comment come true and then having to walk a lot more to get some where.
Joining us now from New York to talk more about the opposition to the war, Laura Flanders of Pacifica Radio.
Thanks very much for coming in, appreciate it.
LAURA FLANDERS, PACIFICA RADIO: Thank you.
SESNO: There are those within the pacifist movement who say that the anti-war sentiment has been ignored, swept under the rug, minimized. Do you buy that, or are the numbers relatively small compared to other conflicts?
FLANDERS: Well, I think that’s been the, sort of, media drumbeat, that the left has been silent on this war; and I would say it’s true, the left, if you look at the mainstream media, has been silent, but it’s not been silent, so much as silenced.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing demonstrations in the thousands from the very first night of the bombing. Today in New York, there’s a demonstration called by the War Resistance League, that I’m going to after this. There’s another similar demonstration called by, among others, Peace Action, outside of the NATO shindig you mentioned in Washington, tonight. And there’s a national demonstration called June 5th. Now I bet that’s the first time you’re hearing that mentioned on these airwaves.
SESNO: Now, what is it that anti-war protesters are saying, that this war is immoral, that any war is immoral, unjust, unjustified?
FLANDERS: Well, the media tends to — I think they can have a kind of theme tune of sort of looking for the left in all the wrong places. I mean, if you want to understand what the left position has been on this war, you just need to look at the line that has been consistent since the Vietnam War, that militarism is not the solution to conflict. You have had every major organization that you would expect — the War Resisters League, Peace Action, Fellowship of Reconciliation, AFSC, MADRE — many, many other groups, who’ve all made statements calling for an end to the bombing, an end to the NATO involvement in Yugoslavia, and a negotiated settlement to the problem in Kosovo.
SESNO: Isn’t getting your message out and, in fact, mobilizing many of your followers complicated by the fact that the commander in chief of this country was opposed to the war, the Vietnam War, that the national security adviser was opposed to the war, that the chancellor of Germany protested nuclear weaponry in Europe, that the prime minister of Britain was, again, part of his generation, opposed to the war.
FLANDERS: Well, there you go again, looking for the left in all the wrong places. I mean, progressives have never counted any of the people you’ve mentioned as their leaders. The leaders you could look to are people like the folks from the Catholic Workers — Daniel Phillip Barrigan, Elizabeth McCallister, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Vivian Stromberg, Lou Walker. There’s no shortage of leadership that has held absolutely firm.
But Clinton may be the king of inconsistency — it’s not exactly the left’s fault. The left is not responsible for him.
:omg:
Clinton has to be the best republican president we have ever had.
Good Morning Sheeple. Anyone going to go see Marc tomorrow night? Small venue, maybe I’ll be able to see him sweat!
Laura is the only real journalist on AAR. To bad she is on only on the weekends, She said that she was going to be gone for the entire month of April.. she is writing a book.
c-span.org
So you have to pay AAR’s premium service to hear what Cindy Sheehan has to say. People have to PAY to hear about peace now. I dunno, Danny’s business model is gonna crash I think. They have a very antagonistic relationship with their listeners. Stupid.
“When the Senate Judiciary Committee convenes as extraordinary session on Friday to consider the Feingold’s motion to censure the president for ordering federal agencies to engage in eavesdropping in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act’s requirement that judicial approval be obtained for wiretaps of Americans in the United States, the dissenting senator will call two witnesses.
Making arguments about the extreme seriousness of the warrantless wiretapping issue — and the need for a Congressional response — will be noted constitutional lawyer Bruce Fein, who served in President Ronald Reagan’s Department of Justice as Deputy Attorney General, and author and legal commentator John Dean, who served at Richard Nixon’s White House counsel before breaking with the president to reveal the high crimes and misdemeanors of the Watergate era.”

Help!
Hubby has finally decided to “do” something with his dad’s photograph collection. (F-I-L was an amateur photographer and developed his own negatives.) We bought a special scanner recently, but my F-I-L, bless his flat little head, seems to have chopped up all the negatives into individual frames–far too small to feed into the scanner.
It’s been years since I played with film of any kind (and back then it was 8mm), but I keep thinking there must be some way to splice still negatives together–isn’t there?
Of course, the reason I need help pronto is that hubby’s birthday is Sunday, I am completely unprepared for it, and only today thought of the perfect gift–if it even exists. (He’s not a baby about birthdays, I just feel bad that I haven’t given it my usual attention this year.)
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!
CH- How about a slide scanner?….or just have them scanned onto a disc by a professional. Im not sure if the slide scanner needs the paper round the image to work, but Im sure you could get those little paper things to slide the individual images into….I think they are the same size except negative as opposed to positive.
I owuld price havig it done for you though…might be a big job if you do it yourself.
PJ, upon startup of the UBCD I get an “Unknown Hard Error”
What the hell could that mean?
I guess I should try the other utilities you suggested but this one seems to have everything…
oops…sorry for the typo(s)…CKKKKKK
CK, you’ll spend way more money having those slides scanned than it would cost to buy a scanner. I just got a copier/scanner/printer that I LOVE! Now I need a digital camera.
Although, I think there is some kind of special attachment you’ll need to get to scan slides. It has been a very long time since I scanned slides though.
A slide scanner? Oy. (Does that mean we just spent $150 for nothing?)
Melina, we are talking THOUSANDS of pictures here; I don’t think it would be cost-effective to take them to a pro. (Besides, I think the idea of this project was to archive them online as a family-built tribute.) I’m happy to potchke with the splicing myself, I just don’t know what tools/equipment I need. And most places I call just offer to print them for me. I may just jump in the car and see what I can find, but I’m not quite sure where to go . . .
But thank you!
But a slide is different than a negative, isn’t it? A slide is a positive image . . . or are we just using the term slide to mean the film in the little paper window?
Gee, I hope I don’t sound as cranky as I think I do!
😳
Yep, pre-op today, and op on Monday. I just wanted to get something out there, in case she and Mr are too busy to blog in the next few days. I used to have to go and do al this stuff with my mom and dad, and they just keep sending you through the maze (thought I don’t suppose there’ll be much to do this weekend, come to think of it; one of the things with being a college kid again is that I don’t seem to know what day it is anymore – or, rather that I don’t attach signifigance to the days of the week the way I used to). To me, Friday just signals that I haven’t gotten all the shit done that I was going to, so that I wouldn’t have to cram it all in over the weekend (that and there will be people around the house during the day). Although, today is my wife’s last day of fulltime orientation (seems like it’s been forever – a couple of months, anyway), and she’ll be off Mon, Tue, Wed. I hope she’s got plenty of her other work lined up.
On the bright side, I played hooky from my CCNA class because it’s another gorgeous day today, already up to 67 degrees. Siggy and I have already been out for walkies, and we went for a nice long one today, and Siggy got to sniff four butts that he’d never met before, play with some wild turkeys (who didn’t seem to really be in the mood to play), and go swimming in the river. He’ll be sore when he tries to get up from his nap, but hopefully the aspirin I gave him will help a bit.
Now, maybe I ought to get some lotto tickets, so I’ll have something to daydream about until Sunday when reality hits again.
My Dad is/was a filmmaker and I grew up with old fashioned splicing equiptment in my livingroom…the livingroom was actually an editing room, really…but there is a splicing thing that you can get and special tape. You should look at photo supply places rather than camera stores…
I think that the negative scanner is an add on to a regular scanner.
Sound like a huge job…and somehow it seems like it could maybe be automated by a professional.
You could just ask the local KMART or whatever big store if they transfer slides to disc…though, negatives are another story…
The piece…God, I may have one here in the garage or my Dad might have one is a little splicer thing…with sprockets acrossed it and measurement lines to line up the frames, and a blade that is over it, like a guillotine or….hammer?…Im not describing this well at all…sorry…but get special tape anyway.
CK- you dont sound cranky at all…
CK – try a professional lab – in Denver we have a few that will do just about anything (for a price of course). But I have saved alot of time and pictures taking them to one.
Oh, man, you go Leahy! Kick ass!
Yeah, Melina, that’s what I’m envisioning. I remember–we’re talking when I was in jr. high, so 30 or so years ago–learning how to splice the family movies together on one of those things. God knows where it is . . . long gone I suspect.
I actually have been calling places around here–not camera shops per se but those that go a little deeper. I know I should probably just get myself into the city (B&H closes in two hours and no one seemed to understand what I was even talking about!) but I’d so much rather take the car and have that freedom.
I was thinking of going to Pearl Paint (out on the Island), because I’m pretty sure I can at least buy the tape and stuff I need there. Oy. WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THIS TWO DAYS AGO?!?
The thing with hubby is, he’d rather go with the impulse than wait. So if he gets the bug to work on this tonight or tomorrow, he’s just gonna run out and buy more crap to try to make it work . . . Me? I’ve gotta study and analyze and find a deal. Oh well.
CK, if you have the special scanner already you probably need the tape…and the little thing that allows you to line up the sprockets…There, that sounded better!!
See how well coffee works!?
Right! What’s that called? (Maybe it’ll come to me if I have some coffee too?)
On second thought, maybe I should go to the city. I might be too tired to drive . . .
Check out CSPAN right now for the Feingold hearings…Repugs are agreeing that censure is called for (according to Mom…) IM watching it now but have ot run out…
CK- try a google search of “Film negative splicing processing” you might add “Still” and “35 MM”…there are services that will scan individual negs for $8 a roll, but Ive never used any…(we dont cut negs in this family unless they are motion picture negs…;-)
There are all sorts of machines, and I can see the little metal machine my Dad used throughout my childhood…Im sure they have a ton of em on ebay.
Ive got to run out and look at Jeeps…uh on and get Will at a b’day party, but I will put in a mail to my father to get the name of the thing.
Yu may be able to get one and have it fedexed to you for tomorrow, if you need it by Sun. The city is probably a mess today with Friday traffic…
Thanks, Melina. (I’ve done some searches, but not with all those terms.) Will do. I appreciate the time and thought you’ve given to this!
Lindsey Graham–gaping asshole.
Lindsay Graham is such a fucking weasel.
Also Sprocket Alignment
This CSPAN hearing is incredible…incredible!!
Let’s see. You can scan positive or negative – there should be a setting in your scanning software. You can get something as simple as a little box with a mirror that bonks the light from the scanner off the mirror, and through the slide. Or, some scnners will come with a little attachment that has its own light source in it. Even other scanners will have a tray that you can pull out and stick slides/filmstrips etc. in. Then there are official slide and slide/film scanners. If you wanna get really good quality, you can unmount the slides prior to scanning.
Unless you want to spend big (big) bucks for a slide feeder (like $500 for the feeder alone, and $500 – or muchm more), it’s a pretty slooooooow process.
Yeah, you can do tape splices or glue splices. Tape’s easier (lasts longer, too), and doesn’t kill two frames when you take it apart.
What’s really cool is a 70mm film splicer. You could do away with the aristocracy with one of those.
Off with their heads!
Well, I just finished watching the Censure Hearings.
And, I was infuriated. 😡
Lindsey Graham thinks of himself as Perry Mason. It’s pathetic and embarrassing :barf:
Bruce Fein and John Dean were excellent. They were instructive and detailed in their presentations and answers.
The only Republicans asking questions were Hatch, Graham and Specter.
The only democrats Leahy and Feingold.
They only got 5 minutes per senator per round and the entire hearing only lasted 3 hours.
Democrats should be ashamed of themselves!! :rant1:
Republicans are idiots and the republican witnesses were idiots
Ohhhh . . . that old lady was great!
:rofl2:
This is a BIOS error? Or a Windows Stop message?
Does it look like this?
0xC0000218: UNKNOWN_HARD_ERROR
That would be a windows error message. If that happens, it could mean that a reigstry hive is corrputed, or possibly that the place (in memory) where it’s trying to load the registry is ca-ca. If your 512 RAM is on two chips, you can try pulling one out to see if it gets better.
You have the thing set to boot to the CD first, right? If the memory is OK, I’d say it’s a hard drive error (since it’s been having problems, right?).
Assuming the BIOS is set to boot to the CD first (and this isn’t a Windows error message), you might want to try removing the hard drive, and then see if it’ll boot off the CD (I’ve seen some boxes that won’t boot with a bad device, even if you’re not booting from it). If that works, then I’d run the memory test while I was there, just for the hell of it. If you get the same error, then pop the CD drive out and put the hard drive in, and see if the thing will boot OK that way. This laptop is capable of booting off the CD, right? If you boot with the Windows XP install disc in there, will it boot and try to start the Windows installation program? I’ve come across some that you could tell it to boot off the CD, but it wouldn’t (could always be a problem with the CD, too – you might try and boot another computer off it, just to check).
If it’s a Windows error message, and your memory is OK, (and you get it to boot off the CD with the hard drive in it) you can try using one of the disc utilities on it.

An Appeal to International Lawyers and Law Professors
Hold the Bush Administration Accountable for Flauting International Law
By CURTIS F.J. DOEBBLER
I just wanted to take this timely opportunity to encourage those of you who are courageous enough, to think about what you can do to encourage the United States to respect international law through outside pressure on the United States.
While I laud the efforts of those within the United States — such as the recent effort of Ben Davis and those who supported it — and hope that such efforts will continue, at the same time I am every day more and more convinced that change cannot come from within the United States, or that if it does, it will only be after countless people have died or suffered because of the failure of the US to respect international law.
This belief is based on dozens of meetings every year with senior American officials, with senior diplomats, and with senior foreign government officials. And it is based on meeting and representing some of the most downtrodden people in the world and advising some of those who are among the most persecuted by the United States, often even called terrorists by our government.
Many, many other governments–even friends of the United States — at their highest levels believe that the United States is very harmful for international law and must be forced to change through outside pressure. Some believe this pressure must be radical, others believe that this pressure must be slow and careful. But that there is a significant international consensus that recognizes the harm the United States is doing and recognizes the need for it to change, is something that I hope will encourage you…

Randi is bragging on herself. O, she is so tallented–and popular. Please don’t play the Nader clip. He would wipe you out in a fait debate, Rhodes.
he Ethnic Cleansing Party Outpaces Likud
The Rise of Israel’s Avigdor Lieberman
By SAREE MAKDISI
Everyone is talking about the successful-albeit lackluster-performance of Ehud Olmert’s Kadima party in Tuesday’s Israeli elections. Kadima won a marginal victory, gaining 28 seats in the Knesset, and giving Olmert the opportunity to form a government.
But in a sense the real winner of the elections was Avigdor Lieberman, leader of Yisrael Beiteinu, which pushed past Likud to become one of Israel’s major parties-turning Lieberman into a potential kingmaker. This is a remarkable development because Lieberman’s party stands for one thing: an Israel finally cleansed of the remainder of the indigenous Palestinian population.
Lieberman was born in Moldova in 1958. In 1978, he moved to Israel. Since he is Jewish, he was eligible for instant citizenship under Israel’s Law of Return.
It was evidently not enough for Lieberman that, as a Russian-speaking immigrant fresh off the plane, he was instantaneously granted rights and privileges denied to Palestinians born in the very country to which he had just moved (not to mention those expelled in during the creation of Israel in 1948). The very presence of an indigenous non-Jewish population in Israel was, in effect, unacceptable to him…
http://www.counterpunch.org/makdisi03312006.html
I knew that bitch would play the Nader clip.:omg:
Look into the Green Party 2004 and Nader, RR. A minority hijacked the party, of which the majority of the members wanted to draft Nader again. ( Who was Nader’s running mate for ’04.) Cobb was lame, ran a loser campaign, and a con as well.
Randi’s description of Lindsey Graham attacking John Dean:
He acted like a “BITCHY QUEEN” 😀
Two minutes of that whiney bitch Lindsey Graham. Yippee!:omg:
I have issues with that twerp!
That little queen is stonewalling Dean with Watergate. What a fucking weasel!:fu: Southern closet poodle.
What was the point of laying it on to Dean about Watergate? Will it impugn his testimony? Seriously. I do not get it.
These machiavellian Republicans bother me. :fu:
Tell us how you really feel, Nicki!
I liked how Dean told Graham that if he’d just shut the fuck up, he might learn something.
Orrin Hatch. A western wallacite. I wish the temple would crash down on him–and him alone. Divine Retribution!
:rofl2::rofl2:
The whole thing was fucked up. I was astounded to see them twist Watergate, of all things.
Bemjamin Franklin signed the Constitution reluctantly. Found it unfair to the lower classes. Great man!
We would be so fortunate to have another Dean step up and denounce the present administration. Any takers? Or is our culture so radically changed from the 1970s that he would get stonewalled?
:omg:
He or SHE would get stonewalled.:omg:
It was unfortunate that Graham didn’t get that Nixon claimed National Security to cover up what his administration did, and that’s why just claiming National Security doesn’t cut it. All he wanted was to say, “oh, well, this is a pure thing, not like breaking into your opponent’s campaign HQ or lying in a civil court case.”
But where the hell were Teddy Kennedy, Joe Biden, Herb Kohl, Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Schumer, and Dick Durbin?
I think Bush has eliminated all persons of integrity from his administration. Loyalty is the trait he values most.
Exactly 😡
To some, the market has no boundaries.
You can’t even listen to a ballgame on the radio anymore without ads infiltrating the call of the game. On our public airwaves, no less.
Or as the Yankees announcers are required to say – “there’s another Jiffy Lube double play.”
Or when manager Joe Torre goes to the mound to change pitchers, the announcers are required to say – “There’s a Geico Direct call to the bullpen.”
Some places ought to be off limits to the commercial forces of the market.
Play by play of Yankees games would be one.
There is a coming backlash against the incursion of the market into our private lives, and the great commonwealth owned by all Americans, but largely controlled by large corporations.
Ralph Nader
:rofl2:
In the Nixon era, commentators like Noam Chomsky said things like, given Nixon’s big crimes ( such as the invasion of Cambodia), why did the Democrats go after him over a third-rate burglary?
Now there’s an mp3 player.
Speak truth to power, Randi! Good job at pointing out the contradictions.
Capitol Hill police are expected to seek an arrest warrant next week for Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia, who was involved in a physical confrontation with a Capitol police officer Wednesday, police and legal authorities said Thursday.
Officially, the investigation of the incident, in which the DeKalb County Democrat allegedly struck a police officer who tried to stop her from going around a security checkpoint, is ongoing, said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, spokeswoman for Capitol Hill police.
However, police have notified the federal prosecutor’s office in Washington that they will be seeking an arrest warrant after the investigation is complete next week, said police and legal authorities, who spoke on the condition that they not be named because the investigation was not yet complete.
McKinney ignored a reporter’s questions Thursday as she walked into the Capitol, before word of the planned arrest warrant. She could not be reached for comment later Thursday.

Are they are starting to round up the dissidents ??
Hi All . . . I’ve been having trouble with “iRecordMusic” again so I have no Maron to upload to my site today. I’m waiting on the torrent so I can listen to last nights show. I do think I’ve found the problem with “irecord” so I shouldn’t have any trouble in the future. I uploaded the final “Morning Sedition” show to my podcast page if anyone here is interested. It was kinda sad listening to that final show once again. To listen go here, http://web.mac.com/ofmen/iWeb/Site/Podcast/Podcast.html
Enjoy. Later ppl’s.
:yawn:This thing isn’t real- is it?
Has anyone here noticed how horrible the audio is in the AAR podcasts? Wonder what their using to record the show?
Probably cassette tape!
😉
Take ’em to court, McKinney. Charges will be dropped or she will make them look like jerks. (Is McKinney from a safe district?)
As far as I know, the iZilla is real. 4 500 gig hard drives and cd/dvd – even freakin’ vinyl – burning, plus an LCD touchscreen. Not bad for $800. The hard drives alone would cost you a good $300 each.
Hey! If it were a Nakamichi cassette deck.
Lindsey Graham reminds me of the Mayor on the old TV show, Carter Country, that used to run around saying “handle it, handle it!”
Of course, I doubt anybody remembers that show.
Neal Boortz, what a jerk :barf:
Privatizing the Apocalypse
Frida Berrigan
[…]”Privatization” has been in the news ever since George W. Bush became president. His administration has radically reduced the size of government, turning over to private companies critical governmental functions involving prisons, schools, water, welfare, Medicare, and utilities as well as war-fighting, and is always pushing for more of the same. Outside of Washington, the pitfalls of privatization are on permanent display in Iraq, where companies like Halliburton have reaped billions in contracts. Performing jobs once carried out by members of the military — from base building and mail delivery to food service — they have bilked the government while undermining the safety of American forces by providing substandard services and products. Halliburton has been joined by a cottage industry of military-support companies responsible for everything from transportation to interrogation. On the war front, private companies are ubiquitous, increasingly indispensable, and largely unregulated — a lethal combination.
Now, the long arm of privatization is reaching deep into an almost unimaginable place at the heart of the national security apparatus — the laboratory where scientists learned to harness the power of the atom more than 60 years ago and created weapons of apocalyptic proportions. . .

Boortz is a fucking
racist
jerk.:fu:Neil!
Malloy does a good job of trashing Boortz.
Cnick screams: “Close the door damnit I’m trying to have a :crap: movement!”
PJ, Carter Country escaped my attention. 😉
Cnick, Sam Seder always exclaims, “close the door” right after he mentions the name of a closeted republican. So far, I’ve heard him say that after mentioning Lindsey Graham, Ken Mehlman and Mitch McConnell 😉
There seems to be a right wing media person for each faction in the rethug party.. There are bigots, racists, fundies, dominionists, just plain stupid people and combinations of all of these.
I’m either to damn silly or bored. Take your choice!
There’s a cute Hispanic guy painting my building! mmm . . . gotta control my homoerotic feelings.
It took me the longest time to figure out what Sam was doing when he started yelling “close the door”,,
That Izilla thing looks great until you see it weighs 30 lbs. All those D batteries and that weight don’t make it portable.. CD quality recordings made at 44khz are like 700 meg/ hr. The Mp3’s are like 10 meg for an hour and a half.. There has to be some loss that occurs in the compression process.
Rick Santorum is another closet poodle.:omg:
Gotta go. Hair stylist, band rehearsal…..:nixon::omg:
There is a windows shareware program called hddisk that allows you to make digital recordings with your computer. I found Windoz sound recorder to be limited to 15 minutes and very difficult to use. You connect the analog output of your tuner/preamp to the mic or line in input on your sound card.. I haven’t found anything that’s free that produces a stream for broadcast over the Internet as of yet.
Yeah, mp3 is lossey, but at 192 kbps and 44,100 mHz sampling, it sounds pretty good to me. Always best to have an uncompressed master, though.
Shoutcast is free, and allows you to stream mp3 out to the masses (assuming you have an Internet connection that can accomodate the masses).
Nero will allow you record form your line in, as will ReplayAV. So will WavePad, I think. In fact, my iRiver can record from the line in (even optical) at various bitrates, and compressed or not.
What kind of connection to the internet would one need to stream to the masses ?? The corp has frame relay and one T1 line that’s like 20 52 kilo bit channels or something like that and with maybe 160 users it gets bogged down really badly at lunch time. I have a 1.5 megabit DSL connection at home although I have never upload anything at better that maybe 60 kilobits /second.
Most home users have an Asynchronous connection, and upload is a lot slower (most people don’t really care, since they’re downloading). I have a cable connection, and the upload varies widely – anywhere from 30 to 200 or maybe more, on a good day. Your DSL should be more constant (what you get is what you get). A T-1 is 1.54 Mbps (24 64k channels), and is synchronous.
So, let’s say you get 60 up at home. If you don’t do anything else, and you crank out an 8 kbps stream (about like listening on a phone – a crappy phone), you could serve about 7 people, give or take. Bump it up to 24 k (kinda like a radio), and you’re gonna get about two.
So does some streaming server operator like Ben Burch have a fibre connection directly to the internet backbone.?? I gather Burch rents bandwidth and his actual hardware from some third party and administers it remotely. Even a blade server with several cards in it must have a bottleneck at its back plane or at the connection to the internet. Are their gigabit long distance fibre networks.?? Most fibre used to be like 200 megabits/sec.

You mean it isn’t a Teddy Pendergrass reference?

CK, I’ll be spending Saturday with a friend who is a pro in the digital/film/computer stuff and has much equipment in his lab. I’ll ask him for suggestions. But I want to make sure I’ve got the details:
1. You have 35mm film that has been cut into individual frames, not strips of 6 the way most photo retailers return with your photos;
2. The film is loose — not in cardboard mounts that would fit into a slide projector;
3. You bought a scanning device with a slot in the front that you stuff the film strips into.
4. The scanner refuses to eat the film in individual frames.
Lemme know the real scoop.
Its looking like rain in Birmingham, AL. bah!!!
I would imagine he buys space from a host, and they charge a certain amount for bandwidth (which they in turn buy from an ISP, except they would use a major provider and have – hopefully – nice big redundant connections to more than one ISP).
A web host will generally charge for total data transfer in a month (I think Bob at AAP was saying that AAR was paying $4,000 a month to provide for people downloading – not streaming – the podcasts, which is why they wanted to move to the “premium” service).
Streaming requires a constant amount of bandwidth to always be available, so they generally would charge on a # of connections basis. For instance, here’s one that charges $100 a month for 100 connections at 24 k.
LAN and computer speeds are way faster than a WAN connection. Your hard drive is typically the slowest part (even the older IDE ones can probably do 15 or so MBps – which would be 120 Mbps and that gets read into memory oin chunks, anyway), and Ethernet LAN speeds are in the gigabit – even 10 gigabit – range these days. Hell, you can do gigabit over Cat5 nowadays.
The Hispanic guy has left for the day. 🙁 I donno what I’ll do with myself tonight. Sure hope “iRecord” works and doesn’t crap out on me again. I finally got to listen to last nights show. Better than the previous one, but I think Marc has to many comics on his show. “We’re fighting for our lives here, remember?” He and Jim Earl are funny enough and with all the regulars I’d prefer Marc invite some left wing politicals (Is that a word? Probably not) N e way, I donno what I’m recording the stream at with “iRecord” but it sounds way better than AAR’s podcasts. That’s probably why I’m having to edit them into segments, i.e., pt 1 and pt 2. My best friend is coming down for the weekend. He likes to go clubbing. I’ve been there, done that Gay bar scene and I’m over it now. I think Republicans are gonna use the Gay bashing card once again hoping to bring out their base of stupid Christians to vote against the Dems. “the Dems” I sound like Big Eddie! I wish ppl would quit beating up on us gays. I’m getting tired of it. Just wish this issue would go away. If these assholes don’t want us gays to marry . . . fine. But its not gonna make me all of a sudden decide to become str8, marry a girl, have 3 kids and buy a house with a white picket fence! I donno why I’m gay but I would not take a pill even if it would change me. I like the person that I am. Would anyone intensionally decide to be gay in a climate of hate like this? I don’t believe the bible is the “word of God”. I believe it is man’s words. Don’t I have the right to believe this in free America? And I don’t believe in heaven or hell either. I think its the grown up version of Santa Claus, be good or else! Sorry to go on . . .
Hey, sheeple!
If anyone is in the Durham, NC area and is planning to go to Full Frame Fest, drop me a line.
I like the website blogactive.com. The guy that runs it is committed to outing hypocrital gay republicans that support legislation hostile to the gay community. He seems very thorough with his research and doesn’t just out a republican because he is gay but because he supports anti-gay legislation.
I think Barry Lank is doing a good job subbing for Seder.
So-Co Lime. I guess our southern bloggers know about this! :peace:

This blog is way more sophisticated looking than the one on Marc’s page. I wish they’d just adopt this blog as the official blog page for Marc’s show. I don’t like having to go back and forth, it makes my head spin!
Far be it for me to disagree with such astute judgement. 😉
I’ve watched a lotta TV in my day, PJ, but this show wasn’t one of ’em! (Although I do remember the name.)
hey sheeple im really depressed about the people sitting in front of me here at the panera bread well if it is what it looks like it looks like a teenage daughter sitting there with her imac using the internet with headphones on while the dad text messages people this has been going on for about an hour and a half now craziness!

Zeb–
Correct on all points. Thank you!
This afternoon I tried to find some answers on a photo site . . . man, don’t ask me how I did it, but I hit geek pay dirt. No real answers (at least not for a casual photographer), but these guys sure have a lot of time on their hands. Most were pretty nice, but some were kind of snotty–if not to me, then to each other. (Nothing like a damsel in distress to reignite a feud!) I’m so spoiled with how nicely we play together on this blog . . .
:omg:oh my god now the little girl is arguing with her authority figure about unplugging her computer!
tis a mad mad world!
Sean, I remember when the Walkman first came out they were called “personal stereos.” I think the key word is personal . . .
I can understand if people are by themselves and hooked up electronically, but why they each gotta be in they own little world together?
❓
p.s. I love Panera. Awesome onion soup!
now what you have to remember here is that danny was a music executive! and uh you know these are the same guys suing music lovers for trading files on the internet people like him have no love or understanding when it comes to the dedicated consumer of the product they are shilling the only concern danny and his ilk have is to make money and screw the fans! not to mention the talent as well! yep yep well you’ve just went for a ride on seans wheel of anger!
Danny Boy, I’ve got my ass-kickin’ shoes on and YOU’RE NEXT!
PJ- Thanks so much for the info on the laptop. Im gonna try what you say…possibly the RAM is screwed up. I actually have some of the older memory here that worked fine but was 2 pieces of less ram…so I can swap it out and try again. I have a feeling that its the HD, and I can easily get one pretty cheap…but I need to sit with it and check to make sure thats what it is. I dont want to put another hundred dollars even into this if its gonna be something else…besides that the guy I know who is donatating computers to inner city families can probably take it to the next level if I cant fix it.
I just hate to pass on Dell’s great deal.
Any word from from Kat or Mr Kat?
Im sure they will be busy spending time together and getting ready for Monday.
…don’t forget the artists Seanie!!
yep yep thats what i had onion soup! good stuff!
ugh so the authority figure gave in and they are sitting there still in their own little worlds! guy texting or playing a game? i dont know! and the girl is on uh let me peek over my screen! i tunes! she is probably spending her authority figures hard earned money! i think this girl needs uh yep she needs a :spank:
uh is that better? yep better wtf i messed this post up! `
Apple is coming out with a patch to allow parents to set a limit on volume….It drives me crazy when I can hear the music form Will’s headphones…its just scary. Bad enough that I stood right up front at all those concerts and ruined my hearing …but this is at least controllable with a limiter. It still goes pretty loud anyway…its not like being right up front for Springsteen, Modern English, JOhn Waite, Elvis Costello, Tom Petty…oir any number of shows where my sister and I managed to weedle our way to the front to the great detriment of our ears…;-)

:banana:oh yeah my bank account went over $9000 today so uh yep im a happy soab:mrgreen:
the girl and her well i am assuming dad just left i swear dysfunctionality is written all over that little scenario i just witnessed!
CK-Here is what my Dad says:
(forgive his writing here…hes not much for email/spell check etc…)
“The tape thing puts tape over the neg on the joints and that makes it
impossible to see the pix. It’s OK for editing film but not OK for what
she is trying. I have these things and the tape — they are antiques —
in the Pal. It’s called a Rivas.
My neg scanner has a holder that will take individual frames. It’s
7,500 DPI — the best. They are much less costly now on Ebay. Any lab
can do this for her. My guys work for 8 dollars an hour. If she sends
me the stuff we can scan it to the HIGHEST quality — 25 meg a shot.
Then we burn to DVD and send back. I have lots of help and can do this.”
So, I think hes offering to have his guy do it for $8 an hour for you. I told him you were a friedn of mine so hes offering help…not much he can usually do for me.
He usually has some tech kid working with him. If youre interested I can tell him how many and ask him what he thinks it would cost for the kid…he always has the best equipment.
He has some drawbacks as a person and a father, but technical, photography, and film stuff are not a problem at all…he is very type A and always doing stuff like this. He is currently scanning zillions of slides from his entire life as a photographer and film maker…it think thats why he has the guy there working for him. He keeps sending me horrifying pictures from my childhood that I wish would have stayed slides in a closet somewhere!
He wants to scan all of my photos for me but alot of them are of the old club days and parties that we had at his NYC place while he was in LA, and I dont want him to know what we did!!…oh god…he wouldnt understand.
So, just let me know if it interests you and Ill put you in touch.
who is John Waite???? I aint missing you at all? That ring a bell Seanie??
God, I feel old.
I recently sat next to a darling guitar player on a plane to Phoenix who was connecting to Hawaii to play a private gig with Waite…
They are all so old now (like me!) and these guys have families and recording studios (this one had twin girls)…and they keep touring. They were doing a private party and then touring around Hawaii and Calif.
The strange thing is that Waite is really good, and is writing songs for others now…he is much better than his one or two hits, thats for sure! And this guy played me a whole bunch of new tracks that they are working on for a new record…
I dont know Seanie…you may have to google him.
ha yep there are so many things i skip writing on blogs and stuff just on the off chance my mom was to read it the other day my mom was asking me about something i wrote on marcs blog! i had no clue what she was talking about for like 3 or 4 minutes then she told me she read it on the blog and i was like huh? why were you on the blog? i am so confused! anyway
nope i got it i remember the song just not the guy!
:???:old people!
starbucks bad! wtf is up with buy blue? there are so many sources for starbucks anti-union anti-worker activities and they gloss over it instead of putting it on their buy-blue rating! ok i dont trust buy-blue anymore time to shop at wal-mart without feeling guilty!
or not:no:
God…I wonder if my father would ever read this blog…I doubt it. Hes not a blog sort…
Seanie, your mom sounds pretty cool!
ok well im out panera is closed! im going to sleep hope the show is good today! later sheeple!
:evil:my mom is evil! but yeah shes cool!
Is it a normal show tonight?
hey the wifi is working in the truck yay!
Hey, Melina. Thanks for posting your dad’s response! I’ll talk to hubby and let you know. I really appreciate it–$8/hr doesn’t sound that bad to me, but I’m not sure how gung-ho my husband is to do this himself! (Although he is a reasonable man . . .)
Thanks again!
Night, all!
p.s. The only time hubby reads this blog is when I ask him to!
normal is relative, I guess….
howie mandel is making noises with his testicles!
oh wait hes not he was just fucking with people!
:rofl2:he is talking about his testicles an awful lot though
:omg:holy shot go here look at the ann coulter ad!
im scared! i think ann coulter is the beast!
why do we care about Mandel’s testicles?
Here is something fun…this is broken is an ongoign blog showing stuff that is broken in the world…what will they think of next?
Seanie, Im sure you oculd add to this one through your travels…
Im too afraid to look at ann coulter before I go to sleep…as it is Im gonna dream of the film business and sprockets…want to pet my monkey? (if you dont get that seanie, just dont mention it…the other old folks here will probably remember!)
Have a great show all…my eyes are closing…
nite !
hey yep the food line at the movie theater was broken! you went through the line and the line ended closest to the theater entrance which was on the right so you went to the left to order and get your snacks then yoiu had to get all clogged up walking past the person that is next in line now if they would just put the lines end on the way far left then you would be always moving right when you went and got your snacks it was stupid and annoying and i told the manager that he could make everybodies life easier by switching the end of the snack line to the left the manager said “it works fine like it is but thank you for your input” well i guess he is just a stupid asshole that cant face reality! asshole i dont like people who ignore my suggestions! asshole just brushed me off ugh anyway yep go see slither great great popcorn movie! ok well i am out laters!
hmmm i should do rewrites before i post longer posts!
Who Really Spoiled in 2000?
Dispelling the Myth of 2000
The Supreme Court Spoiled:
Al Gore won the 2000 election. George W. Bush became President when a biased US Supreme Court allowed election manipulation by Florida Republicans.
Al Gore Spoiled:
Gore ran a weak campaign with no clear message. He failed to defeat Bush in the debates and even lost his home state of Tennessee. Millions of Democrats voted for Bush compared to the few hundred thousand who voted for Nader.
Democratic Senators Spoiled:
When the Black Caucus challenged Bush’s election victory in January 2001, not one Democratic Senator stood up in support. Senate Democrats failed to push for an investigation of the Florida vote debacle.
The Democratic Party Spoiled:
For many years, Democrats never objected when officials removed African American and other voters from the voter rolls in Florida and other states. Why didn’t the Democrats sue when 90,000 Florida voters were disqualified earlier in 2000? Why were Democrats (including Gore) silent about disqualified votes in the weeks after the election?
