Well, here we are at the end of yet another week. And what a week it’s been. Tom DeLay is down and out. Danny Goldberg is up and out (or over, or something). The Dpartment of Homeland Security is full of pedophiles. The US Attorney General (who has taken an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States”) testified yesterday that not only can the president spy on Americans who might be talking to foreign nationals, but that he “wouldn’t rule out” wiretapping of totally domestic calls without a warrant, either (again, I think the fourth amendment is possibly the most simply written and easy to understand piece of the constitution, but then again I think “thou shalt not kill” should be pretty fucking clear to all those hate-filled, war mongering bible thumpers out there, too). We now know that dubya authorized the leak of the National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq (or we know, at least, that Libby said that Cheney said that Georgie said it’d be OK). Even Fox News has Bush’s approval ratings down in the 30’s (he’s even losing ground with Republicans, which is really all he’s got left, since independents left this boat a loooong time ago), so – surprise, surprise – now they’re putting the word out that a military confrontation with Iran is “unavoidable.” That, and there’s no Marc tonight. I hope Bill Maher doesn’t have any wingnuts on later, or you might find me out teevee shopping in the morning. Happy Friday y’all – and a special howdy to Farmerkat, now that we know she’s up and reading the blog.
I’m first!:omg: How do ya like that?
Stay strong Farmerkat!
Oops. If you saw that:doh:
Hi…new to posting here…business kind of kept me out of the loop last few days, what happened to Danny Goldberg, did they boot him?

McKinney should have given the rethugs a concerto on a Chicago piano
We don’t need to be mean about it, man. Fred:spank:
Riley needs to get Bender the f off the air before I :barf::fu::fu::fu:
I wonder if AAR has something so repulsive on the air that gets you so ticked off that you get out out your assault rifle and blow your computer away can you sue them ??
Well, unless it’s about public radio and/or television.
Oops. Maybe I should just show myself to the door. Later.

Yeah. Woo-hoo!:cake:
Riley appears to be a member of the “Investor Class”.. he travels to work in a limo and hires people to train his dog.. No wonder he is so far to the center.
Kerry’s comments about IRAQ are rhetoric..There is nothing the Iraqi politicians can do while the Iraqi people see us as occupiers and there/our politicians as pawns.
I like :joe:!
:joe:: GOOD!
Friday morning began here 10 hours ago with a cup of :joe: from PJ and a message from Farmerkat. It was a really nice way to start the day.
Hope y’all have a good one too.
One NY reporter I really like is Errol Louis at the Daily News. He’s a real working-class NYer, very pro-union–he was great on the NYC transit strike. (I don’t actually read his paper, I know him from various “reporters’ roundtables” on local networks.) This guy is really true to his roots. His wife works for some big Democrat here–Spitzer, I believe.
After :joe::joe::joe::joe::joe: AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGG
I feel like I’m finally crawling out from under a rock. The past month has been insane, between Otis’s health crisis, and then my strep (and complications), and then trying to finish up my stupid, stupid project.
Now, finally, I can get back to whatever I was doing back in January (oh yeah, trying to get my business off the ground) and, of course, talk about the issues! I wouldn’t want to say I’ve had my head up my butt the past month, because that would imply I didn’t know what I was doing, when I most certainly did! (Emphatic hands-on-hips gesture here.) But in terms of what was going on in the rest of the world . . . hmmm, not so much. I feel like there’s a lot to catch up on, but I am encouraged by the developments this week (Delay, Danny G, Libby). Is it too much to hope that unbridled arrogance will finally bring the Bush Crime Family down?
And I’m encouraged, too, by Farmerkat’s post yesterday (and Becky’s reportage). Not just by how well she’s doing post-op, but of how the Seditionists came together in a very concrete way. Who’s choppin’ onions, indeed!
So Kevin…where are you in the blue roof state?
Pam

Clearwater. Actually, sort of on the line between Clearwater and St Pete. The part of Tampa Bay where baseball fans won’t go to see a ballgame because it’s too far away and the stadium is ugly. Not because the team sucks every year. 😀
So where are you in south Florida, Pam? I haven’t been down there in some time.
I was going to post a

I wasn’t listening..to Ms Rant yesterday but last night on the MR blog they were making some comments about Ms Rant sounding like she was soon to be a candidate for the loony bin.. any one else listen ??
Ahhh.. Rachel has a most excellent sound effect of a Donkey.. I can see how that will become a regular as November approaches.
I just listened to last night’s Maron show. Much better than the previous one, but my stream capture missed about 20-25 minutes of the Rove expert. Disappointing….
beemer… Hopefully there will a torrent that will allow you to download an MP3 of last nights show available some time today.

Digital Conversion Timeline Mandated by the Federal Communications Commission
December 1996: The FCC established digital television (DTV) transmission standards by
adopting the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standard.
April 1997: The FCC issued its assignment/allotment table providing each licensee with
a transition channel for digital broadcasting. The FCC also established
DTV service rules.
November 1998: Voluntary DTV transmission begins at 26 stations in the top 10 markets,
including public television stations.
May 1999: Commercial stations affiliated with the largest four networks in the top 10
markets must begin to transmit a digital signal.
November 1999: Commercial television stations affiliated with the largest four networks
in the top 30 markets, representing approximately 50 percent of all TV
households, must offer a digital television signal.
May 2002: All other commercial TV stations must begin broadcasting a digital signal.
April 2003: Stations must simulcast at least 50 percent of their NTSC programming on
their DTV channel.
May 2003: All noncommercial television stations must begin broadcasting a digital signal.
April 2004: Stations must simulcast at least 75 percent of their NTSC programming on
their DTV channel.
April 2005: All stations must simulcast 100 percent of their NTSC programming on
their digital channel, a requirement that will continue until the analog
channel is terminated and one of the channels is returned.
December 31, 2006: Stations must turn off their analog signal.*
Does this mean I need to get cable or a satellite dish?:fu:
Oh, I should crash, huh? Man!
The TV stations will continue to broadcast signals but you will need a down converter box to connect to your analog TV set(s) to receive them. You will probably have to tune to one of your VCR inputs and plug the output from the converter box in there. I haven’t seen any converter boxes as of yet.

I’ve had my :joe:, but I’m still !
Good morning everyone!
Its unbelievable to wake up to the national “news” actually reporting on Bush “ordering” Libby to leak information.
Even if you could split hairs about the president’s power, youre still left with WHY would he choose to declassify that particular information!!
I hope that Valerie Plame is enjoying this because she and Joe deserve every bit of justice that they can wring out of this horrible situation!
Katie Couric…boo hoo…
At least Viera is a liberal and a smart cookie. I think they shoulda given it to Ann but if they couldnt, then IM happy with Viera. Of course it makes the unwatchable View just more unwatchable…how quick till Joy Behar jums ship too? Between scary newly thin Star Jones (who I was just reading about in the Enquirer on line in the supermarket…breast reduction, almost dies…boo hoo) and elizabeth moron neocon (one of the only “celebrities” that Bush could get to appear att he Repug conention…)
Well, life is too short for that crap!
I am so excited that Goldfuck is out…of course he is the devil we know, but hopefully things will get better now.
hey, di anyone see the dateline last night baout medical mysteries…they featured that body dysmorphic disorder that makes people want to cut their limbs off. Its incurdible how storng the complusion is in some people….They had done a bit on it in Nip Tuck last year, and it seemed like a fringy thing that they were xploiting, but, man, its so horrible!
OK…off to edit, finish taxes, clean and do a million things today. I need sleep!!
Morning ppl: I noticed AAR beat me to uploading last nights show. Go here to listen to my version: http://web.mac.com/ofmen/iWeb/Site/Podcast/Podcast.html
Its nice to hear that Bush continues to sink in the latest public opinion polls. I was worried that he might somehow pull himself out of the 30’s. I think this might be a sign that the last election was indeed fixed? (duh) That most of us out here voted against the imbecile occupying the White House! I’m hopeful that we’ll soon learn Karl Rove has been indicted. Wouldn’t that be the icing on the cake. I suppose Bush will hang on despite it all. Three years left of Bush has me worried. Maybe Air Force One will plow into a mountain or something with Bush, Chaney, and the top leadership of the Rethug party onboard. Wait until after the midterms. Maybe our party won’t blow this opportunity to capture both house and senate and hold these criminals accountable for the evil they’ve done.
N e way, hope everyone has a fine Friday. It’s looking rainy in the heart of the conservative south . . . Birmingham, Alabama. Don’t you just love pissing off Bush lovers and Christian idiots? I do. later
CK- I was making Will a cup of coffee because he stayed up till 2AM…couldnt sleep…so I decided to give him a real cuppa joe, and I spilled the little melita one cut drip thing all over…grounds everywhere, hot water soaked, under all cutting boards and on all stuff….and papers of course…
WHY dont I use the real coffee machine? Why? Why?….
Must clean my house!
:joe::joe:
No plane crashes, please. Martyrs they will become.
It’s a legal matter, baby
Got ’em on the run.
It’s a legal matter, baby
A legal matter from now on.
Look, man, I know HDTV is good quality shit, but if you can’t afford it, what the fuck good is it? People are going to freak when their crappy television sets aren’t functioning properly on december 31st.
Even if I were to get cable, there isn’t even a plug in the wall for it. So, either myself, or the owner of this building (or maybe the government) would have to throw down the cash to install it. And, what about installation in multiple rooms, like dinning rooms or bedrooms? An expensive operation, right? So, why must stations turn off their analog signals? Why not continue simulcasting?
I guess it all really doesn’t matter, and I should just shut-up and pay the Man.
Viera’s kinda hot…well, for her OLD age.
Nope missed Dateline. Sorry.
cnick- I find myself lately in a delicate place because now that this is all coming out, the republicans who I had talked to all over town are now feeling badly…I want to say ” I TOLD YOU SO!!” because I could tell that he was a bad guy just by looking at him, before I even wnet on the computer and read and did reaserch.
I cant understand how ANYONE could look at his disingenuous little smirk and believe anything he says…or that nayone could think its Ok to disregard the law and constitution because we’re at war. These are people who dont know much of history and wars…worse wars were fought within the law, and worse threats have hung over us without the law being so publicly and hatefully disregarded.
So Im trying to be understanding and to say that I understand that it must be disappointing to realize that youve been lied to….ugh!
WTF is the matter with prople. Thank god I live in a blue state and the people are mostly of the same mind as me, even if they dont know much.
My sister lives in a very fancy, white, rich town, and on her block are a few really repug families…The Mom actually registered to vote in NY so that she could drive to whatever little town she had a vacation home in to vote against Hillary in the last elections. She drove 2 hours each way to vote against Hillary….
She told my sister the other day that she and her husband can never vote repubican again after this…
Thats the good news I guess…but I cant help wondering what they were thinking before?…standing at the bus stop talking about how the poor are just leeches on society….
Hey baby…Viera is only 7 years older than me, or than I will be on the 23rd…
She doesnt believe in plastic surgery, which my sister and I thnk is silly, considering that we’re planning what to get don ad how soon to start! So we get to watch Merideth’s face fall….we’ll see how far that idea gets…
:joe::eek::40:
About HDtv. I have High definition here in Bham thanks to Charter Cable. Currently they offer, HOB, Showtime, Cinemax, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, PBS, Discover, ESPN in High Def. But with a cheap antenna one can pick up all the local channels in High def for free. The way I understand it. Your old analog televisions will not become obsolite onnce the switch is made, but you will have to buy a cable box to view the new digital channels on you old tv. Most cable companies will probably offer this box to its customers. Everyone else will have to buy one. I’ve heard the price is around fifty bucks. So as a High def viewer I can tell you that I rarely watch the other channels. I do watch CNN, its the only Cable News Network I can part way stand. MSNBC is good also. I wish CNN and MSNBC were in High def., perhaps soon. As for the cost. Well the High def package isn’t expensive at all at around $20 bucks for all but the premium channels., i.e., HBO . . . but the Cable Company requires you to purchase a basic package of channels in order to receive the High def channels and you must be a subscriber to HBO, Showtime et al in order to get their High def channel. It would be nice if one could pick and choose. But I fear that if that ever comes to pass – channels like “Logo” wouldn’t be able to survive. Gays have waited along time for a network to reflect the real image of the Gay community. Not the stereotypical view put forth by right-wing thugs. They hate diversity. They want us all walking in lock step. They’d like nothing more than for media to only reflect their view of the world. That’s what the Bush agenda is all about. They really dispise our democracy and are doing everything they can to destroy it. I’m hopeful that the ppl of this country are finally waking up.
Our priority is to figure out how to engage with power – how do we make continuing the war more politically costly than ending the war? Where, besides congress, are the powers that might have some influence – political, economic, social, media, whatever – on decision-making in the Bush White House? How do we engage with Congress and other parts of government when an executive branch has seized and consolidated such a high degree of power with no accountability? Our goal is now beyond making our constituent organizations and the American people believe that they can be useful and important, and instead figure out how they CAN be efficacious in turning our anti-war majority into national anti-war power.
Springer is commenting on the McKinney case. Details…
Will it become a legal action? Leaves it at that.
Melina–You have my sympathy. I gave up on those Melitta one-cup things a long time ago. They just require too much attention! I’ve joined the set-it-and-forget-it school of coffeemaking. There are mornings when the smell of the coffee wafting into the bedroom is, quite literally, the thing that gets me out of bed.
I usually only have one cup of the real stuff a day (although this week I have adhered to that only once)–but man, it is the thing that gets me up to zero!
:doh:Oops, I just ment, um, digital television. Sorry, man. I really don’t know what the hell I’m typing about anyway. Can antennas grab digital signals or must the boxes be installed, that are connected to a plug on wall- if this is the case, then it’s no good, me no like? I’m sleep typing really. No, I’m not on ambien.
Hey fred. Most are centrist [dipshits]. Amy Goodman! Laura!:omg:
I’m so slow right now, it’s not even funny. Nope.
Check you all later…apparently its parent visiting day at Will’s school and I didnt have that information for some reason…damn!
Antennas can capture digital signals, yes. And y-e-s you’d still need a box attached to your analog tv to view these channels on your “old school” tv. If all you watch is NBC, CBS, ABC and god forbid FOX, and you live relatively close to a city with these affiliates then you don’t need cable, the Dish Network or DirecTV to watch digital channels or High Def. But if you want the creme of the crop of HDtv then your gonna have to fork over the bucks.
later melina, thanks for the post. I get around to reading most here.
I’m all delusional. I hit that state, probably a couple hours ago. The little Pavlovian bell has rung, and that’s my signal. Later, sheeple. Really, I’m already gone.
Gluten Tag! :joe: Thanks for the coffee. I listened to most of the Pendejo bits last night and forgot how insanely funny that was. Tom Johnson is, of course, great but the way Marc handles it is really great also. Thanks Patrick of Snotgreensea!
Yay Farmerkat! So glad your blogging again!
Oh yeah, this it from me, but I just looked up digital antennas and now I’m gettin’ the feeling that you all think that I’m stupid. Oh well, it’s not like I was hiddin’ it or anything
I just love these Buzzflash headlines

Bush ‘ordered intelligence leak.’ What More Will It Take to Remove Cheney and Bush from Power? Will They Have to be Caught Strangling Babies? No, the Press Would Probably Just Believe Scott McClellan Saying That They Were Performing the Heimlich Maneuver — And It Didn’t Work.
Oh, Travis. Don’t you know we love you?
:joe::shock:mornin sheeple! mmmmmmm pbj sandwich at panera bread!
:doh:hey so should i uh get all edumacated on this guy or what?
stupid marco guy from myspace i say we have travis kick his ass in alaska!
:fu:roll back tax cuts? you wanna pay more? more importantly, you want people who provide investment capital to pay more? that’s stupid. the feds bring in more money when people invest more, not the other way around. do you wanna end up like france or germany or sweden? fuck that! you’re probably poor or middle income right now, but what happens when you get old and have some capital sitting around, working for you, helping you maintain a comfortable standard of living in your old age? do you want greedy old uncle sam eating up your hard-earned profits in capital gains taxes? hell no!
remember, folks: high volume+lower profit per unit volume=more total revenue
translated to governmentese: high rate of transaction+lower taxes=more total revenue
conversely: low volume+high profits per unit volume=less total revenue.
i do think the republicans are slipping in their long-held and often-repeated (though not so much anymore, what with the war-induced polarization in popular politics) goal to lower government spending in general and make government expenditures more efficient, but transaction costs need to be kept low to keep america’s economy running strong, and that is one way to work toward accomplishing that goal.
in a largely unrelated aside, will somebody shovel all these illegal aliens back toward mexico, please? (preferably in paddy wagons) they can come in legally or not at all. giving them a free ride is not going to win my vote, republican or no. we stole this country fair and square.

I posted on wrong site 😀
so i think this is gonna be my response!
im not even gonna bother with a long drawn out response here since i can finish this nice clean and easy!
1.reagan tax cuts deficit
2.bush 1 says “no new taxes” deficit raises taxes because of necessity
3.clinton raises taxes balances budget sees strong economic growth for years
4.bush 2 cuts taxes produces largest deficit in american history (adjusted for inflation)
5.i dont like being trickled on!
so is that good enough or do i need to go in depth on this one? or should i wait for him to try to one up me again to get deep into it?
Keep in mind that the move from analog to digital signal does not (necessarily) mean HDTV. The main thing is that the FCC wants to reclaim all that nice spectrum that has excellent propagation properties. Also, the date for cutoff was pushed back to February, 2009. And, yeah, you’ll need something to decode the signal from to digital to analog (basically, it gets transmitted in mpeg format that’s compressed – a standard (non HD) TV signal takes like 6 MHz of bandwidth, which gets compressed to about 1.5 MHz in digital. Your analog tuner has no idea what to do with that, so you need something to convert it to an analog signal that your TV know what to do with.
uh yay digital tv!
I found this interesting article for all you Windows users who might be interested in buying an Intel Mac computer now that you can run Windows XP on a Mac. Go here for the review:
http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/ptech-20060406.html
so is it good enough?
come on this guy attacked my roll back the tax cuts post in a public forum! i am obligated to set him straight so uh is it good enough!
maybe one of you guys can just write a nice long in depth attack on the guys post for me!
I think I’d be more inclined to use one of the hacks that allow OS X to run on regular PC hardware.
One problem with tax supported pseudo/private corporations
RTD workers may have been making a point by striking this week, but their employer has been doing them one better – making money.
By not having to pay its unionized employees, RTD has enjoyed a net gain of $200,000 per day during the work stoppage, spokesman Scott Reed said.
That means that by the time unionized workers have finished voting on the latest proposed contract tonight, RTD will have pocketed a cool $1 million.
It’s just one of the reasons labor experts say the advantage in this strike lies firmly with RTD, and that it would be in everyone’s best interest – particularly the workers’ – to settle it soon.
“I hate to say it, because I feel badly for the workers. They don’t appear to be asking for a whole lot,” said Cynthia Fukami, a professor of management at the University of Denver Daniels College of Business.
“The union is not operating from a huge position of strength here.”
RTD’s solid financial footing is the key difference between this strike and those in the private sector, said Jeffrey Zax, a professor of economics at the University of Colorado.
In private strikes, work stoppages can cripple a company’s revenue stream, and both sides tend to lose money, Zax said.
But RTD receives as much as 70 percent of its revenue from sales tax, even during a strike. Fares make up less than 30 percent of the annual budget. So even with more than half the service hours cut and fare-box revenue down, RTD still comes out ahead by not signing paychecks for the 1,750 strikers.

I think if I was the state I would hold up payment but our governor is a thug so I don’t think thats possible.
Sean, remind him that as of now most tax revenue is coming from wage earners, which is why there’s none in the federal coffers, which trickles down the the state and local level. We can’t even get the roads paved here in SE Pa. because there’s just no money for it.
I think I’d be more inclined to use one of the hacks that allow OS X to run on regular PC hardware.

I’m with you PJ. Mac hardware has always seemed way too expensive for you get in terms of pure horsepower.
ok well im just gonna use what i have there for now i will get all down and dirty with some krugman articles and whatnot if he bothers responding again! ha stupid neo cons!
OSX is derived from Net BSD so it is quite similar to Linux except for the UI.. You can build most apps generated for Linux from source under OSX. I would run Linux on a PC.. Native OSX binaries built for the PPC can not run on an Intel MAC or a PC. I have no idea what the deal is with Intel based MACs especially if they run Windows XP..
I have a feeling this is an old joke, but it’s timely:
A man died and went to heaven.
As he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him.
He asked, “What are all those clocks?”
St. Peter answered, “Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie, the hands on your clock will move.”
The man asked, “Whose clock is that?”
“That’s Mother Teresa’s. The hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie.”
“Incredible,” said the man. “And whose clock is that one?”
St. Peter responded, “That’s Abraham Lincoln’s clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abe told only two lies in his entire life.”
“Where’s Bush’s clock?” asked the man.
“Bush’s clock is in Jesus’ office. He’s using it as a ceiling fan.”
Sean, I’m sorry–I’m confused by exactly what Marco wrote. (Maybe I need more :joe:?) But I think what you proposed was fine.
p.s. Panera pbj? Yummmmm! I’m jealous! (I was supposed to have lunch at Panera with a friend today, but she canceled and I don’t feel like driving 15 miles to eat by myself!)
well if you drive here to lincoln ne i will have some panera with ya!
The osx86 project is a good place to get info. For me, yeah, I’d prefer Linux (not that I’m a Linux pro – had I not had access to MS products for little or no cost for the last five or six years, my whole house would be running Linux right now), since I’m not all that enthralled with the OSX gui. Not that it’s terible or anything, but I like to play with computers and hardware and networking and stuff.
In fact, I feel the urge to build a box right now. I wonder if I have enough pieces laying around to build something? I have the Novell Technical Resources Kit with SUSE Linux enterprise server, and SUSE Linux Pro on it, that I’ve had for awhile and never gotten around to playing with.
‘Left Behind’ fans find another reason for rapture
First came the best-selling Left Behind novel and its subsequent multimillion-selling series of sequels. Next came the direct-to-video movies starring Kirk Cameron. Now in the works: Left Behind: Eternal Forces, the first computer game based on the novels.
Due out in the second half of 2006 ($50, for Windows PCs), the game will be publicly unveiled at the Electronics Entertainment Expo in L.A. May 10-12. In a post-Rapture New York, players must use prayer and warfare to help the tribulation forces in their battle against the one-world government peacekeeping forces controlled by the Anti-christ. (A multiplayer feature lets you play on either side.)
Best-selling authors Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim F. LaHaye served as consultants to the story line, written by Chris Fabry, a co-author of the Left Behind children’s books. “PC gamers are looking for something that is a little more intellectual,” says Left Behind Games CEO Troy Lyndon.
i soooooo doubt the game will be a little bit more intellectual! they would confuse the shit out of the people buying the game if it were intellectual!
PJ, I am going to have to introduce you to my husband Gavin. He’s a linux user for over 10 years now, he knows the ins and outs, The 2 of you would be really happy together, ha! Now have to figure out how to get him here? Anyone have a problem he needs to fix? he is an australian boyscout!
damn it there are a bunch of hot cheerleaders in here and i think they are underage! very annoting ugh i hate cheerleaders!
alrighty then, as the cheerleaders enter, am outta here! happy weekend all!
now im confue=sed they are like right on the borderline of too young too old to look at now part of me is saying well they would be in school if they were in high school but the other half of me is saying they had a half day or something ok im just not gonna look for safetys sake!
Hey, anybody wanna try a conference call sometime? I’m supposed to use this Free World Dialup thing for a class assignment, but I thought it might be fun to try sometime. It’s supposedly pretty good – better than Skype, though I don’t know for sure, since my class “partner” seems to not be on the stick, here. Anyway, if you wanna play, let me know.
Sean, any Homeland Security people hanging around with them?
:paranoid:yeah looks like tommy lee jones
he just escorted them all out very abruptly:doh:
Oooh. I bet they’ve been very, very bad. Reminds me of a movie I ran, back in the day.
:yawn:ok well i need to get out of here the cheerleaders have been replaced by old ladies with blue hair and canes!
:shock:gah stop lurking:rant1: there are too many people in here for there to not be new posts its been steady four or five all day!
Like I’ve said in the past. I’ve owned more Windows machines (6 as of this date) and I’m now on my second Mac, an Intel Imac. I still own a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop running Windows XP Pro. I’ve tinkered around with Linux a bit. But I get fustraited to easily trying to make all my hardware run in Linux. So I gave up on it. I can see the lure of Linux. It being cool to see something you feel you’ve had a hand in creating . . . work. I bought my first Mac when I grew tired of fighting off viruses and spyware. But I’d invested in so much Windows software over the years that I found I could not completely divorce myself from Windows. That’s what makes being able to run Windows on a Mac computer so appealing. Now with Intel based Macs I can do this. And there is no reason that I can’t make my Windows partition large enough to also run Linux. I figure it would be possible. Perhaps I am wrong. The thing I like most about my Apple Mac . . . is the user interface. It just looks better, better than the Windows UI. (My opinion) And I figure Michael Dell of Dell Computer (big Republican contributor) could stand to lose some of those $$$ so he’s not contributing to our country’s downfall by offering one way to think. So I’m hoping that Apple’s prior successes with such products as the Ipod will cause ppl to reasess the Apple hardware; to take another look at Apple when considering a computer purchase. Now you can own the best of both worlds. A computer running both Windows and OSX. Not a virtual machine thats slow and cumbersome. I built my site using Apple software. Software built by Apple makes producing a podcast and delivering it to the internet easy; ILife 06 included in every new Mac contains, Garageband with built-in podcasting software and Iweb for building a site. An all-in-one package that works. I’ve created sites using Microsoft’s FrontPage, but nothing has ever made website creation as easy as Iweb. If you like to tinker with code then the Mac is probably not for you. If you like to create a website without using hypertext markup language you should consider a Mac. As for Windows running on my Imac. I can say on this second day that Windows XP Pro definitely runs faster on my Intel Mac than it does on my Dell Inspirion 8500 laptop. Everything about it seems faster. So now I wish I had a Macbook Pro laptop computer so I could install Windows XP on it and have a portible machine that can run both operating systems. How cool would that be? Until I decide to go further in debt or hit the lottery I guess I’ll be forced to stick with my Intel Imac desktop and wait for that fateful day . . . when my ship comes in.
hey somebody else posted!
too much panera coffee!:joe::shock:
Yeah, but why not run OSX and WinXP on a $300 piece of hardware?
So I guess if its possible for Apple hardware to run Windows – it really should be possible for Windows boxes to run OSX. It seems fair to me.
I agree with you Pj that one of the main disadvantages Apple has is the price of its hardware. I guess Apple’s smaller market share in the personal computer industry has resulted in this pricing structure. I donno.

Yeah, well, Apple considers itself a hardware company, and that’s one of the resons they were reluctant to do with Intel. But Motorola just couldn’t deliver – especially for laptops (power consumprion being the biggie). So, the Mactels use the “Trusted Platform Module” (TPM) chip to prevent thier OS from running on other hardware. Of course, it didn’t take long for that to get hacked, and, they’ve even managed to remove the TPM kernel extension called AppleTPMACPI.kext entirely. It’s not super-duper easy for all hardware (yet), but it’s only a matter of time, and then it’ll be interesting to see what happens.
Personally, I hope the open source community keeps on rolling, so that all of these companies will have to put out better (and cheaper) products.
Outsourcing US Missile Technology to China
The Saga of Magnequench
By JEFFREY ST. CLAIR
Magnequench is an Indianapolis-based company. It specializes in the obscure field of sintered magnetics. Essentially, it makes tiny, high-tech magnets from rare-earth minerals ground down into a fine powder. The magnets are highly prized by electronics and aviation companies. But Magnequench’s biggest client has been the Pentagon.
The neodymium-iron-boron magnets made by Magnequench are a crucial component in the guidance system of cruise missiles and the Joint Direct Attack Munition or JDAM bomb, which is made by Boeing and had a starring role in the spring bombing of Baghdad. Indeed, Magnequench enjoys a near monopoly on this market niche, supplying 85 percent of the rare-earth magnets that are used in the servo motors of these guided missiles and bombs.
But the Pentagon may soon be sending its orders for these parts to China, instead of Indiana. On September 15, 2004 Magnequench shuttered its last plant in Indiana, fired its 450 workers and began shipping its machine tools to a new plant in China. “We’re handing over to the Chinese both our defense technology and our jobs in the midst of a deep recession,” says Rep. Peter Visclosky, a Democrat from northern Indiana. . .

The Rebuking and Scorning of Cynthia McKinney
By DAVID VEST
A Washington press corps that stood idly by while Bush and Cheney plundered the country, wrecked the environment, spied on Americans without a warrant, tortured civilians and lied the country into a war that will only get worse, woke up one morning and collectively decided: “Let’s all play Get Cynthia!”
Let’s get her for being too outspoken, bringing up the wrong issue at the wrong time, failing to get with the program, becoming a distraction, leaving House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi beside herself with rage.
Let’s get her because, hell, she practically volunteered for it, and besides, she’s an easy target, standing practically alone, fired upon at will by Republicans — who seem to think her story cancels out DeLay, Abramoff, Katrina and Iraq — and virtually undefended by Democrats, except by the rolling of eyes heavenward, as though to say, “Oh, please! We’re not responsible for HER!”
Rep. Cynthia McKinney has now apologized for her part in the face-off at Checkpoint Cynthia. It was not enough to stop the cartooning of the coverage. Already the news wires are spinning her statement as a complete about-face, an abandonment of everything else she has said about the incident. Look, she said there was racial profiling in Washington! Look, now she’s apologizing! […]
http://www.counterpunch.org/vest04072006.html
We still need to show our support for Cynthia. Beat back this rightwing attack!
I wish there was some Web site that could keep a running total of the unemployment situation in the US. What you see and what is reported is radically different. Even BLS has stats in their Net Job Gains and losses tables that will show 8 million jobs lost since 2000 add to that the new jobs that are needed to keep pace with population growth that were not created and you can get another 4 to 8 million so that makes it 12 to 16 million unemployed/never employed to begin with. Add to that those unemployed in 2000 ( 8 million) those under employed and those who have dropped out of the work force and there are probably another 12 to 14 million equivolent people. So that makes maybe 24 – 30 million unemployed. The work force is like 160 million so despite the 4.5% that was report4ed today its really 15% – 18%. I believe the unemployment in 1933 was around 20%.. Is there nothing this administration tells us that’s the truth ??
I don’t want her to drop out. She’s too much fun to hiss at. I figure she’ll be here campaigning soon and I’d really love to see all that makeup in person. I haven’t seen anything quite that special since the “fabulous” Tammie Faye Bakker.

Cynthia McKinney is supposed to be coming down here for the Sarasota Film Festival, and is planning a protest IN FRONT OF HARRIS’ OFFICE!!! while she’s here. This could be brutal. (At least I certainly hope it is.)
I wonder if her makeup will run like Tammy’s used to when Nelson kicks her ass in November.

Nice rack, though. Gotta give her that.
Orhan Pamuk was born in Istanbul in 1952 and grew up in a large family similar to those which he describes in his novels Cevdet Bey and His Sons and The Black Book, in the wealthy westernised district of Nisantasi. As Orhan Pamuk writes in his autobiographical book Istanbul, from his childhood until the age of 22 he devoted himself largely to painting and dreamed of becoming an artist. After graduating from the secular American Robert College in Istanbul, Orhan Pamuk studied architecture at Istanbul Technical University for three years, but abandoned the course when he gave up his ambition to become an architect and artist. He went on to graduate in journalism from Istanbul University, but never worked as a journalist. At the age of 23 Pamuk decided to become a novelist, and giving up everything else retreated into his flat and began to write.

Yashar Kemal
Prolific Turkish novelist, short-story writer, and essayist, the last great traditional storyteller, whose novel Ince Memed (1955, Memed, My Hawk) made him world famous. The book, which had several sequels, depicts a conflict between poor tenant farmers and rural landwoners, the Aghas. This struggle creates a young hero, a kind of mixture of Jesse James and Che Guevara, who becomes a famous outlaw and a legend of South Anatolia.
“People have always created their own worlds of myths and dreams, perpetuating their lives in those imaginary worlds. At times of duress, they have created more such worlds, which have given them haven and facilitated their lives. In their transition from one darkness to another, having acquired the consciousness of death, they have realized their lives and the joy of living in the world of myths and dreams they have created.” (Yashar Kemal in his acceptance speech of the 1997 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, trans. by Talat Salt Halman)

U.S. ambassador’s car pelted in Venezuela
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Supporters of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez pelted the U.S. ambassador’s car with fruit, vegetables, and eggs on Friday, and a group of motorcyclists chased his convoy for miles, at times pounding on the cars, a U.S. Embassy official said. No one was hurt.
Embassy spokesman Brian Penn said Venezuelan police escorts did not intervene as the car Ambassador William Brownfield was riding in was pounded on by protesters and hit by produce.
“We’re being attacked by groups of motorcyclists while we’re traveling in an embassy car,” Penn told The Associated Press by cellphone shortly before the motorcycles stopped chasing the four-car convoy.
“It’s a very violent demonstration by a small group of people who appear to be organized by the mayor’s office,” Penn said.

OK, I’m still trying to process how we will get Maron’s show come Monday. There is a Clippers game at 7:30. So, they will join TMMS in progress and if we stream ktlk we will miss an hour. So, it looks like the only way to get the full show will be by podcast. Is that how everyone else understands the situation?
Yeah, I guess that’s how it’ll be – three shows next week dealyed by Clippers games, so we non-premium subscribers will be screwed out of at least an hour per, except for the bittorrent possiblilites.
Unless AAR would be so kind as to stream his show, as they once promised.
o shit! Bad weather moving my way:

I thought Maron said once the show is on the satellite it would be picked up by other progressive stations. If so then perhaps one of those stations will broadcast the show in its entirety and at a earlier time of the day.

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Supporters of U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay protested at an event Thursday held by the Democratic candidate for the congressman’s seat, and the event quickly dissolved into a shouting and shoving match. Police were called, but made no arrests.
“I got pushed. I got hit. I got a sign wadded up in my face and my hat pulled down over my eyes,” said Marsha Rovai, 69, a supporter of Nick Lampson. “They just did it to be nasty.”
DeLay campaign manager Chris Homan said he organized the protest but DeLay, a Republican, didn’t know about it.

When you don’t get your way throw a temper tantrum
Maybe, but it won’t go to syndication until 4/17, so we’re still screwed for next week, and if it doesn’t get syndicated by a station with a stream, we’re still screwed.
The EFF is saying that AT&T is forwarding all – ALL – Internet traffic to the NSA.
I just posted this on Marc’s blog:
Okay . . . well I’m not gonna pay AAR for podcasts. So I guess I’ll just have to pick up the show from the torrent. This is bullshit. Maybe things will change at Air America for the better now that Goldberg has been reassigned to Siberia.

If you go or find out what happens be sure to share. …Pam
On Olberman (a fill in host, Holtz, because Kieth took the day off) they just did a thing on Harry Taylor…with this website that was put up so that people oculd thank him for speaking out to the prez for us…incredible when you watch the whole clip…Bush is such a psycho.
Oh, Hi everyone! I finished my taxes!! Spent the day on one wild gose chase after another…
goose…..duck, duck, duck, Goose!!
and one more thin from the countdown:
Cyclops the Cat!!
I want one!!
i approve of the job president bush is doing as president i think bush should have a 99% approval rating yes yes make him hitler!
So….My granddad did a podcast interview with a radio network guy. The readers of thing are all industry professionals. The interviewer told m that he had to edit “alot”…and he caught Hi on a bad day, I think…though most days are sorta hard when youre 96.
Anyway, Check it out…Im gonna ask him for the unedited version!
Hey, I have all of these tapes Ive made of him telling stories. If I wanted an easier way to transfer to the computer what sort of media recorder would I buy? Is there anything that will just plug in with a USB OR something and transfer files in some easy to convertt form?
Also, PJ, if youre out there….Im gonna put a new HD in my laptop. Can I just load the XP discs or do I have to format it and partition it in DOS?
If so, what is the format comand fromt he C prompt and what is the partition prompt?…greatly appreciated if you know off hand and its an easy answer……if not, I will diveinto the books/search engines…
Hey, Melina. The XP installation will offer to format the drive for you, so no worries. If you buy a retial HDD
You should be able to plug the line out of your tape player into the line in of your soundcard, and record it into ReplayAV, shouldn’t you?
I bought one directly from Dell…but also broke down and bought a new laptop on credit because I have wanted one for so long and the deals were too good.
I love XP…sorry Mac people, but this program is great (except for whn your HD corrupts)…and I still have to track back and find those sites to uncorrupt the thing…on my to do list….
OK…nite nite…no Marc tonight, but also no Goldfuck…and TGIF!!! Ive got to get some rest.
I hope that the torrent will have the full show if AAR wont stream it from their site….
really? (re: #138)…OK, Im gonna try that…what did you use to record the live show?
I used my iRiver, so I was able to record it directly to mp3 format.
cool…Im sure ipod wont do that…probably need an add on or some such.
From what I’ve read, you need to buy a $50 addon for the iPod,a nd then it’s limited to 8 kbps recording unless you do some kind of a hack on it. My iRiver has a built-in mic, or you can use an external one (plus it has optical in/out for even better quality).
Most of your cheapo ones can record (my wife’s little samsung one works great, and it’s about the size of a thick book of matches.
But then, it isn’t white. 😉
Now that I look at ReplayAV, I guess you can’t record form the line in. You can do it with WavePad, though. Just go to record, and it’ll walk you through selecting the device and line in.
:knit2:
Hi you all. Have to catch up with a lot of reading here. I’m in Nashua and just finished a two day meeting- very stressful and not much sleep. Just before I left I bought an Olympus digital voice recorder.
I can plug it into my Usb and download voice recordings seamlessly.
They told me it would work on a Mac if I had WMP and it opened in Quicktime.
I think Melina told me about a program that translated WMP to Quicktime.
The older Belkin recorder for iPod doesn’t work with the 5th gen iPods or the Mini’s- they haven’t brought one out yet.
So my plan was to record my meeting but it never came out of my bag.
I plan to use it on the road like seanie Sean- maybe not to podcast yet but just record the thoughts I have while driving.
I was only able to skim the blog.
Travisdem I hope you are OK- I caught the S-word up there. Best to learn to eradicate that word from your vocabulary when thinking or speaking of yourself. It is not appropriate.:spank:
I am so friggin tired because this hotel has thin walls and all the voices of the meeting were bouncing around my head.
Travis- stupid is being awake during the Marc maron show and forgetting that I could stream it..rather than tossing and turning.
I will listen to it tonight and pretend it is the Friday show. Is that what day it is?
Next report will be from a Panera Bread spot somewhere in the Northeast.
I am completely fried.

I’m going to go listen to Lawton.
