Holy shit, halfway through April already. The good news is you don’t have to stress about those taxes, ‘cuz we’ve got until, what, Tuesday, I think (if you file in Andover, MA – love that Patriot Day holiday). Monday, for everybody else. The bad news is, well, just go to any news site, bad news is all over the place.
Anyhow, I’ve got way too much to do today (though I did get the dump run out of the way yesterday – but did I get any credit for it? No, I did not), and my back is killing me (there are those who think clumping cat litter is a miracle; personally, I think it just makes for some very heavy shit), so I can’t sit here and type much longer. Have a good Saturday.
Hey, somebody remind me to mail my taxes in today (I’d hate to leave it ’til the last minute).
pjsauter  Cheers to having back better…It IS Heavy :crap: :billcat:

ARREST!
IMPEACH! (format by KevinM)
VIGILANCE!
Mornin’, y’all. I may have misspoken about the local AAR station. Hartmann is on now so maybe the Atlanta station still has AAR programming with some sports broadcasts thrown in. Who knows?
so i walked to the gulf and took a nap on the beach it was cold when i woke up!
Good morning peeps. 🙂 What beach, Sean? You seem to lead a travelling life…
Mornin’, :sheep:le.
Mmmmm :joe: good . . .
I thought today was the last day for taxes! Hmm . . . I guess I sent em in to soon. Hey ppl. So I guess we streamers missed Sammy the Stem Cell last night? Must a been in the first half of the show? That part covered over by that damn Clippers talk! How long can anyone talk about basketball . . . geez? Someone calling in saying “he should of done this or he should have done that!” Hey smart one . . . great athlete . . . why aren’t you down there playing ball?
I’m beginning to think its pointless to upload any of these shows to my podcast page. But I did upload last nights last hour including Tab commercials, Rock Hon-dah, click the banner now . . . to my site. Go here to listen. http://web.mac.com/ofmen/iWeb/Site/Podcast/Podcast.html
I think I’ll start working on a podcast of my own. And also start shooting some home movies to upload to my site. Perhaps show you guys around Birmingham or take you with me to work? I also need to really start using my journal again. My best friend Steve confirmed for me last night that he is indeed coming this morning around 11 A.M. (CT) to hang out for the weekend. If you think Bham is bad you ought to live in Florence, Alabama. At least there are more gays here than there. Maybe not a comforting thought for you, but a nice one for us gay guys! So my boyfriend remains elusive. Perhaps I really don’t have a boyfriend anymore and I just don’t know it yet?
Later guys and gals . . .
PS shoot me a IM on Yahoo messenger sometime. “cnickthomas”
I don’t have much to say this morning. It’s very warm in NYC, supposed to go up to 80 today. Pollen is going to be extremely high (11.4 on a scale of 12), so I’m loading up on drugs now. I wish I didn’t have to–I know it gives my liver quite a workout, which I worry about since my mom died of liver disease. (Possibly autoimmune? They weren’t sure at the time.)
Today is the anniversary of her death, so I guess my liver is staring me in the face, so to speak. We didn’t have a great relationship, and in fact it got worse after her death, if that’s possible, so the anniversary can be a hard day for me. (More in terms of what happened around her death than her actual death.) So this year I am trying something new and focusing on how freeing her death was for me instead. Not sure how that will play out, but after an early-morning appt, I think hubby and I will jump in the car and head north. Maybe New Paltz? We’ll see.
Sorry to get so deep so early in the morning, and for those who might puzzle over my mom-ambivalence, I say, if you have a good relationship with yours, cherish it (you probably already do)!
Huh. Came back to the computer to see that Elwood had done a little dance on the keyboard.

Morning.
Took me a while to play blog Ketchup this a.m.
ck, i’m sending positive thoughts your way. :gate:
becky, howdy! have you had a chance to call the affiliate in atl to ask ’em?
melina, i sent you an email about tweet. 😥
PJ, here is to your back feeling young and spry! PLUS, going to the dump is cathartic!
our nra neighbor is all excited to go to the nra convention – keynote speaker, tommy franks. had to burst the neighbor’s bubble and tell him what an a-hole franks is. last year they had delay…. what an load of :crap: that organization is scary.

OK, this is funny, Hub suggested sharing, so here it is…http://insideinfosys.blogspot.com/
Where will America meddle next?
(love the last paragraph)
Is Elwwod talking in code going to get PJ in trouble with DHS..?? Did I detect that he was typing in Arabic ?? Darn liberal cats.
When the NRA was primarily into gun safety it quite useful but I don’t think you need three guns for each household just because you can.
Elwood is Jewish (or at least he was raised Jewish), so I’m not sure where he would’ve learned Arabic. Although, with Astoria being the melting pot it is, you never know.
I’m no expert but I think it can be translated thusly:
hey fred, 3 guns? he’s got a warehouse-full.
Great link, egotils. I’ve already forwarded it to several friends.
And thank you for your kind thoughts, FK. How are you feeling today?
so I’m not sure where he would’ve learned Arabic
maybe he’s trying to cross the israeli/palestinian divide – an international peace activist!
You might be right, FK. One of his roles here seems to be the clown, the goofy spirit who tries to keep things light.
i find it kind of interesting that most people on the left don’t and probably never will own a firearm. That probably says that like 30% of the population own like 600 million guns.. You have to wonder. ???
i’m doing pretty well, ck. balance is the name of the game. i try to do things but my chesti-poo reminds me that i need to take it easy. Have now slept two nights in my own bed – can’t sleep ALLL the way through, but I’ve at least retired the banana lounger – progress!
Melina sent me a whole cigar box full of cool cd’s and during my early a.m. wake-up today, I listened to one of the Inner Sanctum Mysteries – how neat is THAT?!
=> I’d love one of your bonus-son’s cd’s – do you still have my address? I’d be happy to send you shipping costs.
What I find particularly interesting is that retired cops get to keep their firearms, at least in NY. This story really blew me away this week.
I’m sure there are other reports in the bigger papers, but I like the local, non-corporate one. Straight and to the point.
nut jobs on ALL sides drag us down (we’ve got our own share of ’em, I will point out).

Elwood for President :peace:
that’s a sad tale, ck.
FK, I’d be happy to send you the CD–and I do still have your address. Thanks for your interest!
I’m glad you’re back in your own bed. I know when I’ve been hospitalized it makes a huge difference–even if it’s not a solid night’s sleep.
I’ll let Elwood know you’ve nominated him! :billcat: The scary thing is, he’s smarter than Bush. And that’s saying a lot.
The scary thing is, he’s smarter than Bush. And that’s saying a lot.
i believe it.

Becky- if you blink, you may be listening to a rerun of Riley’s show….
PJ – cant you bury the cat litter?…Im not a cat person…My cats were all outside feral cats.
This is disgusting.
Beats me, I just do what I’m told. The cats aren’t my end of the operation. You add water to this clumping stuff, and it clumps into rocks, so I don’t know that burying it is a good idea (plus, the ground is frozen here all winter. And with four cats that are constantly crapping and peeing (when they aren’t puking, of course), I’m not sure how big a pit I’d need to dig.
I take care of the dog, who craps outside the way the good lord intended.

U.S. to Send One Troop to Iran
By Andy Borowitz
In an effort to punish the government of Iran for its nuclear ambitions, the Pentagon announced today that it was preparing to send one troop to Iran.
The troop, Private John R. Klugian, who is currently stationed at Fort Dix, could be deployed to Iran as early as next month, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld told reporters at the Pentagon.

the whole cat poop in the house thing i don’t get…and i like cats. can’t you have a cat door so they can go in and out and do their thing?
You can’t contain a cat outdoors like you can a dog. It would be like letting your dog roam free.
Got a crazy next door neighbor who I fear would do the cats some harm. She’s only around once a week or so, but she’s a nasty, crude woman.Wanted us to cut our tree down because it dropped leaves in her pool (gave the peopel on the other side a hard time, too), put up a string between our properties, and after it was out over a few seasons and broke, she accused us of breaking it, and threatened to call the cops. Has her mail delivered to a PO Box, because she doesn’t want the mailman to walk on her lawn. Said our rain gutter was putting water into her back yard (has hers pointed directly at us, BTW). After one of the cats got out and dared to run across her lawn (she screeched and yelled and carried on) she called the health department and said we had “animal” smells (he came and looked around, and determined she was nuts – said “oh, you’ve got one of ‘those.’ We get a lot of that”). I could go on and on, but you get the idea. She’s a fucking nut, and dangerous, I bet.
Plus, with the potential for bird flu and whatnot, I don’t think we want them out. And, come to think of it, they’d probably come back inside to shit, and then go out again.
I’d just be happy if I could walk from one end of the house to the other in a straight line, withouth having four cats swirling around my feet and trying to trip me. Not to mention go to the bathroom w/o an audience. But, they love me best, so what can I do?
:rofl2:
PJ, I have a question about my computer, if you don’t mind answering. It is a Dell Dimension 4700 that I have had for 14 months. Lately it seems extra loud. Sometimes, it starts revving up so much I think it is going to blast off. I have all the McAfee security stuff. I have run a virus scan, nothing. Also, did maintenance. What do you think?
George Bush: The Audit

Pj-
My dad has a great cat and he lets her use the cat door to do her business. One night he woke up at 3am to some noise in the bedroom and Mia was staring into the corner behind the TV stand. The next couple of hours was devoted to rat patrol. He was able to extract the rat by using a “getter”(A tool for helping you pull up your socks when you can’t bend over) Got it around the rat’s neck and flung him out the front door.
Last week he woke up to some commotion on his bed.
A pile of bird feathers and a dead baby bird.
We had a serious talk about bird flu and I felt like reporting him to the Audubon Society. :sammy:
My two cats are under house arrest.
I reccomend the World’s Best kitty litter- corn based and completly flushable- but then there’s the water bill.:spank:
ok, so kitty outside isn’t such a hot idea. the flushable corn thing sounds good, though.
isi, i’m not very computer savy but my dell latitude had to have the fan replaced and the cd/dvd drive replaced (jet engine noise came from both during separate incidents). I had major problems with ad stuff gumming up every nook and cranny and made the processor run constantly and loudly. tried to perform an exorcist, but only worked temporarily. if finally died. (3 years later)
almost afternoon nap time.
Hey isi. Hard to tell from here, but there are a couple of possibilities. One is a noisy fan. There should be a power supply fan (it should be the one around back). So, pull the computer out where you can get at it, and see if it seems to be coming from that fan. Might be the fan bearing is gogin bad, and is making noise. Could also be an accumulation of crap in there. Next, on the inside, there’s probably a fan that cools the processor. You’ll have to open the thing up to see if that’s the problem. Again, it may be the bearing, or sometimes a cable will shift over and kinda make contact with the fan blade. Usually Dell ties all their cables up tight, but you never know. I’m not all that familiar with the Dimension 4700’s, but it’s conceivable that there are other case fans and/or a video card cooling fan (probably not, but you’ll see when you get inside there). At the very least, I’d crack the case and clean out all the dust bunnies and stuff.
If it doesn’t seem like a fan, then you could have a bearing going bad in the hard drive, or it could be a noisy CD drive, too. There may be a HDD diagnostic you can download form Dell (or from the HDD manufacturer). Sometimes it’ll be able to tell if there’s a mechanical problem. If the drive is SMART capable, you may get an error there. You could always disconnect the CD drive to see if the noise goes away.
Of course, if it’s still on warranty, you may wnat to get on the horn to Bangalore and see what they have to say.
Without hearing the noise, though, I’d look for a fan problem first, and then the other stuff. I hope that helps a little.
Hey, I’ll pass the WBCL along to the person in charge of the litter boxes (FWIW, FK, growing up with dogs, I never “got” the whole shit-in-a-box thing, either; this is apparently considered a “feature,” but if it were up to me, they’d either be going outside or they’d be cleaning the litter box themselves).
Isi- also, if youre not under warranty anymore, know that almost every dell part is available via ebay and once you open the thing you can see that everything is pretty easy to replace. Its the software and drivers that go with things like th ehard drive that get me…but a fan or something is easily gotten and replaced just by unscrewing and rescrewing and plugging the wire wherever it had been…pretty cool…once you get the dust out!
Is the Torrent up? I didnt manage to get the show last night…boys on the computer playing Age of Mythology and seeing whatever else they cold blow up!
egptils- this is hilarious…wanted to repost it in link form so people would go there.
Is it maudlin to go to the bird store later on just to look at birds? I miss my Tweet…Less vacuming though…
Thanks, PJ. When I get the courage to do some exploring I will follow your instructions.
FK, it could be I have the same problem. :rant1:
Thanks, Melina.
Isi: Something else that might make your dell be noisy is some of the later models had “quiet” operation where they put fans in them that have a built in control IC that monitors the air temperature inside the case and then brings up the fan speed as the computer warms up. I have an HP with an AMD processor with this feature and on cool days it runs quiet but as the room temperature comes up it gets louder and louder.
Fred, I’ll try to pay attention to that. Thanks.
Warning: Poop and throw up below!!
PJ- just dig a hole in the summer and keep it coered with boards like a cesspool and dump the corn or flushable litter there all year, then when its sorta full, cover it and let it settle into the ground.
There are these doggy doolyes that Ive been looking at because cleaning the dog run usually means a whole supermarket plastic bag full of poop (and if you feed them completely raw the poop turns to white show and disappears in the sun…but go figure, my dogs only like the raw once in a while!)…the poop is mostly the undigestable cereal matter that they use to carry the prion cow brains and by-products to the animals…
The poop thing is what got me started on the raw diet, but if your animals lose interest then there is raw meat sitting around. There is sometihng to be said for good old Hills Rx at times like that…and then there is the pup with the chronic throw up illness…;-)
The torrent for the 4-13-06 show is posted at
http://www.mininova.org/tor/281618
well, out of desperation, I got off my ass (symbolically)…or wrist rest, as it were…and I found where they keep the freakin torrent…I think. So, apparently is not up yet…but, I can wait…there is majority report and Rachel from yesterday…
Off to boil some eggs!
Hey did anyone hear Dr Maddow explain the Easter Bunny? I kept thinking of what Marc and his crew might do with that question…
Oh…maybe it is up…because I call it the show fromt he 15th because thats when it plays here, but it really was the show from the 14th…right??
Ok, I have copied and pasted all your suggestions and emailed them to myself.
Let’s just say, it’s a wonder I am allowed to even OWN a computer! 😮
nope, I was wrong…oh well…I know youre all outside on this glorious day….and here I am tapping away trying to get my shows so I have something to listen to while boiling eggs and cleaning the dog run…
If you look at the wavepad of the majority report you can see that they do have more and many commercials….youd think that they could get liberal corporations to take a chunk of the show as a product placement sort of thing…
But Fred, is last night’s show not for the 14th?
Fred, that is interesting…is there a setting for that cooling thing in the software or is it automatically set in the hardware?
My RAM is som super hot kind with a cooler on it and I recently got an error saying that the computer was overheating…and they came and replaced the RAM and motherboard for me…but in the meantime they told m to keep the coer off the case to keep it cool
So, Isi, open the case and leave it open for now and see if there is less noise when its cool.
I don’t believe that radio advertising is very expensive as advertising goes so one would think that AAR could find some green companies to advertise and maybe pay for only half the advertisements at twice the price or something so that you can get like 45 minutes of programming per hour instead of 35. Rhodes explained the advertising policy once and it sounded like they buy blocks of commercials from some add agency so they didn’t have much of a say about the content of the commercials. AAR’s advertisers are quite similar to those on the Reich wing stations.
yeah that’s the torrent for Thursday nights show but it just got posted at like 11:30 last night.
I don’t think the fan speed thing is programmable since there is no connection between the IC’s running the fan and the mother board other than the fan power wires themselves.
The whole advertising thing has to turn on its head in order for these things to work…I see huge changes coming and if the networks dont ge ton board in some way they are gonna be left in the dust. Did you see this weeks NY Times circuits where David Pogue writea about Torrents…very interesting ot watch this seep into the mainstream and realize that the powers that be are so far behind the curve…
Yeah, I had Thursday from replay, I think…I have to look through because I just listen to them in order of recently added or whatever…
Ive got plenty to keep me busy till they…whoever… posts it…Im still trying to understand the torrent thing after only maybe 2 years of use…ding dong…
Oh, and PJ…mail your taxes!! I stood online at the PO yesterday after the vet just so I wouldnt have to today or MOnday!! It gets worse and worse and they put on less and less people….and it costs so much for a return receipt and certified letter these days. Ive got a few states going here so my postage was something like $20…just cause I dont trust the PO…funny how that work, huh? They make $ on being untrustworthy!
Use Turbo tax and file electronically. You will get your refund in about ten days.
would that it were so simple….Im not ready to take on multiple states and depreciation etc…
 I think my computer is working ok now!
I did two things, I was able to finally figure out how to pull the cover off, and I did find dust bunnies. So I vacuumed that. And, I also pulled file storage away from the side of the CPU to give it more air. Right now, It’s working fine. Thanks, everyone! 😀
HEY! Ah, since we’re on the topic of tech: this may sound stupid– cause I’m computer illiterate– but is there a way to add stuff from my old Acer computer to my dell? Like, are there compatibility issues? I’m hoping I can combine the old hard drives and the 256 MB SDR DIMM, F. Will that work? What do you think? Um, right now I just tore open the old computer, and it’s laying on the floor next to some towels. Actually, on some towels, but whatever. Oh, and I noticed that dell’s chip (or whatever it’s called) is made in China, while the Acer’s is made in Korea. I dunno what I’m gettin’ at, maybe I’m just a little tired. Where’s my first step? :40: (Yeah, that’s what I’m thinkin’, too)
Travis, congratulations on getting a new computer!
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to help you on your question. 😐
Hey Travis, mull this over while you’re working on your computer 😮
Thanks ISI. I’ve actually had this Dell for awhile now, but I’ve just thought of combining components :doh:I Don’t know how it will pan out, though. Maybe I should ask the Drunk Prospector:40:, or Dr. Maddow.

Must have been tough finding a mohel for that. :rabbi:
:rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:
Well, it looks like the pins don’t match up. Acer’s RAM has 168 while Dell takes 184.
The question of whether the hard drive can be useful or not in this little project is still open. Any ideas?
Probably the same incompatibility. Never mind:knit2::knit2:
Well, are we all ready for the next war?
Hey Travis – the hard drive is probably compatible. Odds are they’re both IDE, but even if one PC is using SATA, you should still be able to hook up an additional IDE drive. Just make sure if you need to set the jumpers as master/slave that you do it, and get pin one correct on the ribbon cable (the power cable is idiot proof, by the shape of the connector). This’ll walk you through.
Oh, and thanks for the reminder Melina, I managed to drop my taxes off into the mailbox (no waiting in line for me – I figure if the USPS can’t find the IRS, then they’re SOL).
Hey Fred, I did use TurboTax, but as there’s no refund for me, I figure they can wait for my paper return. My damn stipend is taxable, so I kinda got screwed this year (and not even a kiss).
 Hey, thanks PJ. There’s even pictures!
I’m a little scared of screwing up the system. I just read that I should make a back-up disk. (I don’t have a disk drive)

Eh, backups are for wimps. You shouldn’t screw anything up, unless you format one of the drives or something. If there’s something you can’t stand the thought of losing, then you may want to find a way to back it up. Even e-mail it to your gmail account (use WinZip or something to put all your most precious files into one file, and then e-mail it). I think you’re limited to 10 megs at a time. Didn’t you wind up getting an iPod? You can back stuff up to that, too.
Keep in mind that if both drives have an OS on them, you have to pay attention to which one you’re booting from.
Of course, another alternative would be to buy a 3.5″ USB drive enclosure, and then you can just use your USB port to add a drive. They go for around $30 – $40.
Farmerkat, that animation makes me sick to my stomach. Isn’t it against an international treaty or something to use a nuclear weapon. And, the harmful exposure to so many people. 😥
I thought Randi said that we were going to detonate a bomb somewhere in the desert this weekend. Anybody heard about that?
They fly the B2 Bomber from Whiteman AFB in Missouri to drop the bombs.
I’m still really lost on this hard drive stuff. I think I’ll read more about it before I dive into the box.
Yeah, I wanted an ipod really bad, but then I saw the Creative Zen Vision M with its FM tuner, voice recorder and 200,000 color display screen. So, I’m still not sure on that choice for the mp3 and video player. It’s kind of a bummer that it only has 30 gigs and not 60 like the pod, too. I dunno, 300 bucks is a lot of bacon.:40: and beer

Yeah, I think that is what Randi was talking about.

Maybe I over-stated. I didn’t read the article all of the way yet.
Hey Travis: Go with the USB external drive idea .. that way you can take the disk with you when you do your next computer upgrade. USB II ports have almost the same data transfer rate as serial ATA.
Thanks for the ideas. I have this old Acer laying around and I bought a 40 gig hard drive for it a few years back and thought I could use it as a secondary or slave drive for this cheap dell. But, I’m not sure how to operate this little procedure. When I can afford the tech equipment, I’ll go with the usb drives. Thanks man.
I’m not all that convinced about Ed yet. I didn’t hear his comments about the Phoenix station though, but from those quotes posted on the Small Eddie site, it seems like a rather weak case against him. I mean there’s no context for those quotes and they’re so spread out.
I do want to hear more about this Daschle thing if it’s true, though.
How many times do I need to write though?

Hi Spiritdancer…I don’t know that song, is it on Neil Young’s new album? I heard one or two songs from that and like it, but have heard no song about impeachment…I do think Neil Young wrote “Ohio.”

Here’s a story on the album, “Livin’ with the War.”
PJ…I can’t thank you enough for turning me on to that James McMurtry song yesterday, it’s rapidly becoming one of my favorite protest songs, and I turned a whole bunch of people on to it. 🙂
No, KK, don’t know that there’s anyplace to hear it yet.
Young and a 100-strong choir recorded the album, titled ‘Living With The War’, in just three days.
Doesn’t surpise me, he wrote “Ohio” in something like an hour after he heard about what went down on that campus. The man still got it.
Thanks, pj.
I look forward to it. With Bush’s popularity down and the wave of resentment against him growing, it’ll be great to see some cowering republicans.

Yeah, I like that James McMurtry song a lot. I found that video to accompany the acoustic version of “lives in the Balance” to be pretty moving, too. Another 20 year old song that I wish wasn’t still relevant.

AND HAVE A HAPPY EASTER (maybe I just misinterpreted all of this)
Anyone see the retired general on CNN saying that we’re already at war with Iran, and that the decision to ‘Pearl Harbor’ Iran has already been made [crooksandliars.com]?
Do we still have an opposition party? Do we still have a republic, you know, the kind with a constitution which states that the Congress has to declare war? Do we need the generals to put a stop to this madness, a la Seven Days in May?
What the hell is going on?
I’m so frightened by all of this 🙁
Travis- why wont you have a happy easter?…do you not celebrate the pagan bunny and all his candy goodness?
PJ- great video link! I was at that acoustic tour and it was one of the best shows Ive seen in years…I have tons of bootlegs of that tour….
Jackson is such a great songwriter but its really kind of sad that the protest songs seem to be timeless…
Ill have to hear the Neil Young and McMurtry…
Meantime Im gonna go and watch either History of violence or brokeback…Will seems to want to watch a movie with me so maybe Ill be watching one of those early in the AM instead…we’ll see…
Have a good before easter evening everybody.
Maybe tomorrow the torrent will be up, now that ive made my way through everything from last week save Al’s shows…That would be my desperate choice now…maybe friday with Conasin.
But I now have MR from Friday night and Ring of Fire lined up so Ill not have any problem getting through till Monday if I can catch the torrent sometime tomorrow…
Oh Torrent Gods…hear my plea!
May the bunny bring you all lots of peeps!! Try em aged for a couple of weeks in the cabinet with a slit cut in the plastic…or try em frozen…or put 2 in the microwave facing eachother and give each a toothpick sword, turn on the microwave and watch them fight to the melty goodness death!! Adult supervision suggested for that one!
And when youve run out of bunny festivities theres always this
My friends actually called me today to tell me about this and to warn me not to let Will do this alone because it has far reaching possibilities if the wrong kids got their hands on this technology!! Be very afraid! (and does this tie in with the Maron aspartame hysteria somehow?)
:40:mwah ha ha ha a whole bottle of appleton special jamaica rum just for me!
Oh, I think a few bottles of soda and a case of Mentos are in order for Easter dinner with the in-laws tomorrow.
Be careful what you ask for. Generals to remove Bush? Martial law to follow. People out in the street. Pressure the government to change. Demand change.

President Bush says he declassified portions of the prewar intelligence assessment on Iraq because he “wanted people to see the truth” about Iraq’s weapons programs and to understand why he kept accusing Saddam Hussein of stockpiling weapons that turned out not to exist. This would be a noble sentiment if it actually bore any relationship to Mr. Bush’s actions in this case, or his overall record.
