Gotta go mail some stuff.
Ann Coulter is a lawyer. She has finally overstepped her bounds. Thrown to the wolves.
I quit!
dkjdfjkdfgjkldfjlkdffjk!!!!!
Pardon Hinckley!
sorry, my fingers went a little crazy for a minute…
there’s just a Randi rerun on AAR radio right now…
KGO! I heard this one already.
….I liked that clip of Keith Olbermann going off on Coulter, though, I can listen to that over and over
C-span had that Cato Institute panel on states rights on The Cato institute is a bunch of wing nuts babbling Reich wing BS.
states rights…you hear that phrase and you know wingnuts in the neighborhood
Now C-span has the Reich’s state dept person on babbling about why Syria is a bad apple.
These people on the Reich look perfectly normal ( the women are not round faced, beady eyed , bald people at least).. Someone will have tor remember to dissect one some day to see how much they differ from humans.
I think we had a discussion here about lizard brain, or using more primitive part of the brain more often? That probably can’t be proven via an autopsy, though…
Now rep Ackerman (D Ny) :omg: looks like a Reich wing guy.. bald head, beady eyes, babbles on incoherently about killing off people.. but so does Rep Crowley (D Ny). :omg: Susan you have aliens in your state masquerading as democrats. :omg::gate::omg::jason:
yes, I know, as I said, Hillary lives only a few towns away from me :omg: These two I’m not familiar with though. Should I be watching C Span? Hmm, might just depress me
Why are the people in NY so easily fooled by these Aliens ?? Your state is more than 60% democratic. Maybe that’s why Rachel is tailoring her program more to the wing nut point of view.
Colorado has an excuse.. We have a low population density.. and lots of unoccupied areas where the Aliens could land their space craft :tinfoil: The high altitude also leads to oxygen deprivation so all those people living in Vail, Beaver Creek and Aspen have brain damage (Jerry Ford being a perfect example) so they make perfect rethugs.:omg:
A lot of the people who live along the front range came here from California where they escaped from the democrats and their liberal attitudes. The Altitude is not high enough along the front range to explain brain damage so some may also be Aliens who landed out on the planes:tinfoil:
People in NY are more conservative than they let on, especially when you leave the NYC area. Being a Dem is sort of a tradition among some, but that doesn’t mean liberal values always follow from it
I need to start getting ready for work…have to work a few hours this morning. Will be around later, though…have a good one, Fred, the rest of you sheeple
:eek:Ah haw I figured it out..:tinfoil: DOD built these people at area 51 in the Nevada desert and then populated Calif with them as a DARPA demonstration program in the 1970’s under RayGun . It worked so well that they then planted them all over the place, The people in California finally got wise and found that by implementing liberal policies they could simply chase a lot of them out.. They have now been reprogrammed to offer resistance to expulsion so the struggle continues .. Sounds as good as any other thing I have heard. :omg:
Its time to try and go back to sleep for a while here. I will throw the laundry in the washer and crap out for a while.. I shall return.
This gumball on C-span was talking about the eventual collapse of the Syrian economy. I came in in the middle of his commentary. I thought he was talking about the US economy. The parallels were pretty amazing. The good part about this is it has to be over in 5 minutes.
Morning!
How are you Fred? A quick howdy before I get the walk in with the dorks. It’s going to be a hot one today. I’m a wee bit behind in listening to the “Big Show” so am playing ketchup this weekend.
Hey Farmerkat hows it going ?? I just opened all the doors and windows to let in the morning air. Its only supposed to get up to 80 today..
great. another “me too” inappropriate pig on cable tv:
CNN Host Compares Gore to Nazis
(I’m glad cnn is advertising this jerk-face on AAR – waste their money and support the progressive message all in the same process.)
isn’t that a dry 80, you lucky dog?
we’re going in to the 90’s here. humidity hasn’t been too bad thus far, but I think that’s about to change. guess it beats KP’s heat, though.
I have heard a lot of people on DU and in the AAR blogoshere that were wondering why AAR would advertise for Glenn Beck.. As long as they don’t put something on AAR that is a lie or terrible misleading anybody who wants to advertise should be considered a customer.
The humidity rarely gets above 20% unless it rains. Most people who live here get totally spaced out if the humidity goes up.
I agree. Take the $$$ and run. No one who is a serious aar listener is going to take someone like that seriously.
check back with you later!
Phoenix used to have low humidity too but as I understand it all the truck farming around the city has done bad things and its a humid as southern Calif is these days ( KP correct me if that’s not the case)
120 degrees with 70 – 90 % humidity makes you do nutty things. I lived in Houston for six months… the humidity plus the heat plus the petrochemical air pollution made it close to unlivable for someone who grew up in Colorado.

Appeals court backs Bush on wiretaps. Please note lead judge was the Zelig of GOP partisan judicial hacks, David Sentelle. Among other Republican duties, Sentelle reversed convictions of North and Poindexter and was handpicked to allow Ken Starr free rein to entrap Clinton. He was joined by the infamous Judge Janice Rogers Brown, a recent incompetent Bush loyalist appointment. This is an example of why controlling the judiciary and making it an activist GOP stronghold is so important to them.

Iraqi Claims U.S. GIs Beat Wounded Man (Zarqawi)
June 10, 2006, 6:15 AM EDT
BAGHDAD, Iraq — An Iraqi man who was one of the first people on the scene of the U.S. airstrike targeting Abu Musab al-Zarqawi said he saw American troops beating a man who had a beard like the al-Qaida leader.
The witness, who lives near the house where al-Zarqawi spent his last days, said he saw the man lying on the ground near an irrigation canal. He was badly wounded but still alive, the man told Associated Press Television News.
U.S. troops arriving on the scene wrapped the man’s head in an Arab robe and began beating him, said the local man, who refused to give his name or show his face to the camera. His account could not be independently verified.
The U.S. military made no mention of any physical contact between U.S. troops and al-Zarqawi other than an attempt to provide him with medical attention

Sweden labels Golan wines: ‘Made in occupied Syrian land’
Sweden has started to note that wines produced in the Golan Heights originate in “Israel, occupied Syrian land,” the Golan Heights Winery has informed the Israeli Embassy in Sweden. Winery sources told Haaretz that the step is unprecedented and worrisome.
The embassy is investigating claims that the warning is being issued for several wines on the Web site of the Swedish government’s chain of shops that sell wine. The chain is the only Swedish body permitted to market alcoholic beverages.
Swedish Jews have protested the step, claiming that the new way of listing the wines from the Golan Heights is a political move by a government body. The sources also said such an indication had never been made regarding any other country – not even South Africa during apartheid.

Nicki should appreciate this one.
OK- heres the question that is being repeated all over the place….if the house where Zark was killed is flat how was Zark in such good shape? Can we see pics of the others killed there?
Mr FK is on MSNBC with that cutie Richard Engle (not that Mr isnt cute himself…there is something about a man in a flak jacket!) off in the rubble…and a new offensive happening out there to stop whatever is gonna happen as they just replace old Zark….
How is Zark looking so good?
Did they have him on ice or something?
Well the post I made up the page a way said they found him wounded then beat the hell out of him until he died. Given two 500 lb bombs and the mess that house was in no one survives a direct hit.. There might not even be anything left to identify.
Hey…dont forget that the yearly Kos starts at 11AM EST
And his face looks ok…a little bloated actually, like he had been dead for a while…
Have you guys been up all night?
ZZZZZZZZZZ Huh… what. Oh… Susan had to go to work I think Nicki fell asleep on the computer..FK went to walk her dorks.. I got my bills paid and the laundry done and its not even 8 am yet.
C-span starts their coverage of KOS at 12:00 maybe there is some really good stuff at the KOS convention in that first hour they don’t want people to know about..
It is more humid here but not in the 70% range. When it’s 115 degrees, 30% humidity is pretty damned icky.

(but how do I really feel?)
KP, i don’t understand why you can’t switch from swamp to ac after a certain point in the day. What happens? thought about that on this mornings walk.
melina, is Will getting any sleep yet?
Ann Coulter Challenges President of Iran to Insane-Comment Contest
Conservative pundit Ann Coulter today challenged Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to what she called “an insane-comment contest” on live TV to determine who is the insane-comment champion of the world.
[…]
Swamp coolers are less expensive to operate ( it says in small print) for a given number of square feet than a mechanical AC unit. I used to have three 8,000 BTU window units and it cost about as much to cool in the summer as it cost to heat in the winter. This single huge unit costs about half as much to operate as the three units did. Gas prices went out of site so I can’t really compare the summer utilities bills to those in the winter any more. Swamp coolers are good for both humidifying and cooling but they work by evaporation to cool the air. You have to have something to evaporate the water into so they don’t work well or at all if the outside air is humid. Our utilities dept was discouraging the use of swamp coolers for the last three years because we had an acute shortage of water.
but kp says she can’t switch from one to the other mid-day for some reason. is it true that swamp coolers do not work so well in high humidity? We have A/C only here – costs a
smalllarge fortune to operate. The swamp cooler makes the humidity in the house go up so switching on the mechanical unit will probably cause it to ice up.. It freezes the humidity on the cooling heat exchanger. You have to turn it off or put it on blower only until it thaws out. That’s why my AC unit wasn’t making it the other day after it rained .. It iced up so no air got cooled .. It turned into an ice maker instead.
A lot of central AC units installed with the coil in the furnace actually run the furnace to dry the air out before it is cooled. That can cost two arms and a leg with today’s natural gas prices.
we have outside heat pumps and under the house & in attic furnances/AC units. we’re using puron in the ac units. They do pull the humidity out of the house which is good or I’d have to get separate de-humidifiers for inside or the mold when be horrendous. i know quite a few folks around here who have geothermal. It was too cost-prohibitive to convert over when we had to replace our units.
God I miss northern Calif….
Kat: You might inquire of your furnace maint company or dealer if the Furnace units heat the air before it is cooled and if so see if they think it would still work if you turned off the gas in the summer time. There might be something in your control scheme that might make it not work at all unless the furnace comes on. (the blower still has to run but not the heating part). We should ask PJ since he was in that business for a while.
Will slept last night!!! Yers, hes better on a higher dose of this medicine, but he may also need an even higher dose as time goes on. I have to watch him carefully.
The first hour of the Kos was Dean speaking and asking question.
He is fantastic…Im sure that they are scrambling to get the video out there on crooks and liars or whereever…its definitly coming to a computer near you. This is why I voted for him in the primary.
And Maureen Dowd is Columning from there.
here is a snippet of that:
I will post it up in a bit. I got worried because I turned up on Wednesday as #1 at Technorati and then someone from the NYTimes was on my blog….so even though the worst you get is a cease and desist letter to start, I want to wait a bit…and I guess its important not to use some of her wording in the title line.
OK…back to the Kos….
Apparently with this $10 pass I am also a premium AAR member …I wish there was something that I needed or wanted from them….
Anyone need anything from the premium archive? heh heh
Krista/Kat/all, my electric bill is high year round because of CT’s wonderful electric monoploy that supposedly isnt a monoploly or whatever…its really horrible.
When I moved here the electricity was aorund $100 per month, then when I got window a/c’s, which I didnt use all that much it went up to around $175…then, of course, I have added the fish tanks and animals with heaters in their cages…those things brign it up.
In the past few years its been going up and up…with just aorund the same setup as always here, its not are $380 per month …and everyone is saying this.
The little apartment over the garage aka the gues house, used to cost between $20-30 per month depending on if anyone was there, and now its around $80-100….
Then the OIL!!! Its gone from 99 cents gal. to….the moon!!
How does anyone live?…its so crazy…
anyway, I want to invest in solar panels…I need to find out where the best place is to get them and how hard it is to run the system…I think Ed Begley Jr has links on his site.
Hey. I’m not sure why you couldn’t switch to the a/c after using the swamp. The first thing the a/c will do is remove the heat from the mositure in the air (that is, it condenses it, and the water goes out the drain – assuming the drain’s not plugged, in which case there’s usually a safety switch that will shut the thing down so you don’t get a flood). So, you won’t get any real temperature drop until the RH of the inside air goes down. But, you’re still removing heat because you’re pulling it out of the moisture in the air (and that in itself will cool the air – and make you feel more comfortable).
We don’t have swamp coolers here, per se, because they just don’t work above about 30% RH (probably best at around 15% – 20% or below).
Your a/c shouldn’t freeze up due to high moisture. All it should do is puke out lots of water. Having the coil freeze up is usually due to poor air flow (say, dirty filters, the access cover not closed all the way (usually there’s a safety switch to keep the unit from running, though) a slipping fan belt or motor that’s not running at full speed, not enough return air (stuff blocking the returns, for instance), or something along those lines. You could also conceivably have your supply ducks shut off or blocked, too. Basically, the a/c will more or less remove however many BTU’s it’s rated for. If it’s rated to remove, say, 200 BTU’s per minute and it’s supposed to move, say 500 CFM, then it will pull the heat out of the air and moisture. The coil gets all wet and sweaty as the water in the air condenses. Now, if you block off the air (say, your filters are plugged), it will still pull out its 200 BTU’s every minute. If it can’t pull it out of the air, then it’ll pull it out of the water sitting on the coil. That is, it freezes it. The frost on the coil blocks even more air, exascerbating the situation, until the coil is frozen solid. Now, if your air flow is a bit restricted, it might be that the coil will start to frost, but the t-stat gets satisfied soon enough so that the unit shuts down and has a chance to defrost. If it gets warmer and has to run longer though, the frost might build up to the point where you lose enough cooling capacity that it never catches up, keeps running, and freezes solid. That could be the case with dirty filters and the moisture in the air is quite high, too (you’re removing heat, but the air temperature doesn’t drop enough to shut the thing down, and you freeze up).
There are other things that can cause it, of course (like being low on refrigerant, running the condensing unit when it’s really, really cold outside), but the #1 cause is plugged filters/blockd ducts.
So, anyway, I’d be interested in hearing why you can’t switch over to a/c mid-day, too.
Hey Fred, I’m not surprised your window shakers were using lots of juice. That’s 2-tons of cooling. My central system at my house is only 1 1/2 tons (slightly undersized, IMHO, but it came with the house), but the central a/c only needs to run one compressor and one fan. Of course, we have a little 5,000 BTU unit on our bedroom window so we can keep the room cool at night w/o running the a/c for the whole house.
Well, that’s probably more information than anybody wanted.
Melina – here’s a good place to learn about some alternative energy sources. They sell stuff, but have a library, too.
Solar electric panels will generate electricity at 12 or 24 volts (maybe others, too), so you either need 12 or 24 volt appliances, or you need an inverter (an inverter will reduce the efficiency even more). You also need a bank of batteries (the panels charge the batteries, and you run off the batteries).
I’m looking at getting solar panels for heating, myself. They aren’t too bad price-wise. I’d like to do something like dig a pit and fill it with rocks Then you heat the rocks while there’s sun, and pull the heat back out at night.
i’m gonna change my filters after reading pj’s report. I think it has been about 6 or 8 months.
Guess we have to wait for KP to tell us the reason she can’t switch from swamp to A/C.
so glad Will slept, Melina. Hurray! I want to put our well pump on solar with battery back-up. Besides the hopeful savings (my dream is to live off grid), when the electricity is off in a storm, we don’t have any water. I helped fight, unsuccessfully, 🙁 two merchant power plants near here. The Bastids. They eventually had to pay the surrounding landowners some $$$, but the plants came in, nevertheless.
Thanks PJ.. I’m not sure why it iced up on Thursday either. It started on high cool with the temp set at 70 and the temp in the room was 97. The humidity must have been 90% at the time..its always on recirculate so it gives the max cooling. The front heat exchanger almost immediately iced up.. There is just a debris filter in the air path, I put it on fan only for about a hour and it defrosted itself but then when I set it back to cool it iced up again. The temp sensor is in the intake air path not on the coils. I don’t think there is a coil temp sensor. I put it on low cool yesterday and it ran all day and half the night with no problems..I would like to see a graph of my watt hours consumption for June I will bet I could find Thursday with no problem. All I could attribute the ice to was the almost condensing humidity at the time.
The older AC unit as well as the three old old units did that once in a while too.
I know someone who lives off grid in the foothills of the Rockies.. His house couldn’t be located as well as it should have for solar usage so he only gets direct sun light about 6 hours a day in the winter and maybe 10 hours a day in the summer. He has a bank of 24 volt batteries out in an out building ( he was afraid of chlorine gas build up) and uses a 5kw inverter/power conditioner and it runs the whole house and his electric stove and refrig. He gets about 3 hours of power in the winter time ( he uses propane for heating) and 7 hours in the summer time. He also has an Onan 25 kw diesel generator that provides power when his batteries get low. It auto starts if the batteries get down to some level the inverter doesn’t like. I think it provided 24 volts too so it charges the batteries. The generator bypasses the inverter so he has all 25kw at his disposal. There is a transfer switch that connects both the generator and inverter to the house. It makes a neat system for a techie tinkerer but not something Joe six pack would be able to maintain.
He said once that he had about sixty k invested in that system including the generator which must have been 20% of that cost.
All six or seven times I have been to his house the diesel was either running or stated and switched over. I ticked him off when I asked him why he didn’t just run on the generator. The generator will quick charge his batteries in about an hour.. In the winter when his wife is home in the day time she just puts the system in auto and gets three hours of power on the batteries, runs the generator for an hour then he gets another three hours on the batteries. Except for the noise and the diesel smell that process works pretty well and probably doesn’t cost as much as running the diesel all the time.
Usually if the coil ices up rapidly (like immediately), it’s an air flow problem. Sometimes, if there’s been poor maintenance, you’ll actually get the front part of the coil full of crud, too. If you see a blanket of fuzz on it, you can try and clean it off – careful not to just push the crud into the coil though. You can try to blow it out with air if you have a compressor (hard to get at ususally though, and you want to go opposite of the normal air flow to avoid just embedding the crud deeper into the coil).
However, if you see part of the coil freeze, it could be that it’s low on refrigerant, too. The coil (the evaporator, ‘cuz the heat from the air is transferred to the liquid refrigrant, which evaporates it) is supposed to be more or less flooded with liquid. If there’s not enough liquid to flood the coil, all the heat exchange will happen at the where there’s liquid (you’ll just superheat the refrigerant vapor beyond that). So, that part of the coil begins to freeze. Then, the frost prevents air from going through that part of the coil, so there’s liquid beyond that. Eventually, if the thing doesn’t shut off, the frost will spread until the wole thing is frozen. If the unit is oversized, you might get away with that – until you get conditions where there just isn’t enough capacity in the starved coil to allow the unit to shut off and melt the ice (or it cycles back on before the whole coil has a chance to thaw out – so you start out in the hole, so to speak). I’ve seen coils with so much ice that it backs up into the fan, and then the fan doesn’t turn. If it’s belt driven, then motor sits there and spins around the belt. If it gets a chance to shut off and thaw, the belt is loosened up. So, it slips, which is another reason for reduced air flow that I forgot to mention. If it’s frozen solid, the belt will melt and you’ll get icky stinky smelly burning rubber smell. A direct drive fan can burn out the motor (also stinky).
The best thing to do is check your filters, your belts, etc. Then get gauges on the thing.
Oh, BTW, Puron is just a Dupont brand namee (like Q-tips) for the refrigerant (R-410A, in fact) that’s replacing R-22 (the refirgerant that’s been in house a/c’s for quite a while).
R-12 has been in refrigerators and car a/c’s for quite a while. It’s a CFC, and among the first to be phased out. It’s no longer in new equiopment, is is way expensive. Now, you need certification to buy and handle it. R-22 is an HCFC. Not as bad as 12, but still has Chlorine in it. 22 is to be phased out totally by like 2020. CFC’s, HCFC’s, and HFC’s have been collectively known under the trade name “Freon,” which you’ve probably heard.
Yeah, we don’t get enough sun here, and solar electric generators are still expensive. I’ve been looking into wind, but where I am now is a but on the low side, wind-wise. The best thiing is to reduce your consumption, and not live like an energy pig. Unfortunately, with something like 10 computers, a few TVs, A/C, and assorted stuff, I live like a real energy pig. I’m not proud if it, and I pay extra per kwh to support green power (60% wind and 40% low impact hydro, though it’s not like I have an extension cord from the wind farm to my house, so it’s kinda conceptual, but it makes me feel better).
Some day, when I win the lottery, though,I’m building an earth-shelterd home and will have a combo of wind and solar, and thr greenest home you can get.
The compressor in the AC unit is self contained and both the heat exchanger fan and the air circulation fan are direct driven by the same motor.
It is something that only happens once in a while. I’m not going to worry about it. I think we need to find out why KP can’t use her unit after using the swamp cooler.
The Kos-fest panels are over for the day, I guess….I guess that AAR isnt broadcasting from there anymore this weekend.
Marc should have taped his show from there!

Well, The moisture is what is cooling the air. That’s how a swampcooler works. It pulls the air through wet pads and puts moisture in the air to cool it down. And yes, it doesn’t work for shit over 30% humidity. So, if you switch over, the ac does the opposite, it pulls the moisture out of the air so while its doing that it’s not working very good and mean while the sun is beating down on the house. Now, if I had any kind of insulation what so ever I might be able to get through that period of drying out without too much trouble but I don’t. I live in a shack, literally. But when these things work they work great and it can get pretty darned cold in here and they are pretty cheap to run. It’s just a motor and a pump. Pretty simple. I think my electric bill in the nineties when I was running it all the time all summer didn’t get over $80/month and the water bill went up to $60/month.
Look into solar sheets.Last time I looked into solar they had it in big rolls that you just rolled over your whole roof. Less bulky and I think they were a little more efficient on cloudy days than panels. I’ll try to find the info I had on it.
WOW Kp
With utility costs like that and from what Melina said I see why all the Northerners flock to Arizona for retirement.. :omg::omg::omg:
I don’t know what the bill is now because I don’t see it. But maybe I will ask Michael out of curiosity.I just got some new pads for the swamp and they are some kind of foam stuff that is spose to work way better than the traditional shaved wood pads. I’ll let you know how they work.
Yeah, it’s too bad you can’t make swamps work in wetter places. They’re even easy to work on.
And yes, there has been a band called Swampcooler. Contemporaries of The Gin Blossoms.
Ah, mystery solved! Thanks, KP. (my fu’s on post 48 was NOT refering to your post 47, btw!)
Reuters is reporting this:

the headline makes it sound like Hamas ended the truce. But if you read the article and see the horrific front page of the NYT, you’ll see that Israel attacked by mistake a beach on Gaza killing 7 innocent people on a crowded beach. 30 civilians were wounded. Israel says there were targeting some crude Palestinians rockets 400 yards away FROM THE CROWDED GAZA beach.
So you tell me who ended the truce and who was the aggressor in this instance.
The US targets assassinations like Israel, the US wants to build a wall like Israel and we pre-emptively struck a country, like Israel has. But things aren’t working out so well for Israel so why is the US following a similar game plan?
does tit for tat ever work anyway? who did the tit and who did the tat?
well, maybe for nuke threat…threat of “equivalent retaliation”
:jesus: :peace:
:tinfoil:The Aliens are all programed alike ??? well its a thought :yuck::doh:
For some reason US and Israeli foreign policy says its ok to steal people resources, and beat them up and blow them up but when they do that to you its not ok.. :gate::omg::jason::fist:
Oh, I love the Gin Blossoms! They were/are friends of my brother in law…when he lived in Mesa. Way back then they were just starting out and he would bring us tapes of their shows….
Hey everybody. Sorry I missed HVAC Corner today. 😀
For the record, it’s hot as hell down here this week, but my AC is working great. I’ve been turning it completely off when I go to work, then putting it on when I first get home, then going off to do something else so that when I get back it will be cool. Hoping this will reduce last year’s stratospheric electric bills. We’ll see.
I picked up a copy of F*U*B*A*R today. Review to follow once I finish it. It’s not a very long book, so I wasn’t thrilled to pay full price, but Sam has a mouth to feed at home so I did it. :sammy:
(The Sammy emoticon is in lieu of a crying baby emoticon. Read into that whatever you will.)
Streaming Video of yesterdays KOS convention coverage on C-span

Hey Kevin did you notice the tropical depression was headed your way ??
Any one see video/audio of Deans opening remarks at the KOS convention this morning posted some place yet ??
Hey…here are some of the keynote speeches on video from the Kos convention…(including the Howard Dean speech).
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=yearlykos
Thanks Susan.. Hows it going this pm ??
ok…I’m watching these videos now myself – Howard Dean sounded pretty good actually. Markos said some interesting things about the the history of blogging and the importance of politics on the internet – though his remark about Daily Kos being a site where “liberal, moderate, and conservative dems come to gether and fight but vote together on election day” reminded me of one of the reasons I’ll never really be a fan of Kos… going to watch Barbara Boxer now.
Day Two at Dem Blogfest: Kosniks and the CIA
Babes in Kosland
By MICHAEL J. SMITH
Okay, so I’m a behind-the-times old Sixties lefty. Guilty as charged, yer Honor. I throw myself on the mercy of the court. But would somebody explain to me how anybody who thinks of himself as a “progressive”, or a person of the Left in any sense, can fail to be pleased when a CIA agent is “outed”? Personally, I love it when that happens, and I wish somebody would out ’em all. Don’t you?
Well, the regular communicants of Daily Kos don’t see it that way. I’m lurking, under deep, deep cover — disguised as a security guard, actually — at their “first-annual” convention in Las Vegas. It’s Day Two (Day One was reported at http://www.counterpunch.org/), and — we’ve all been there — Day Two has a slightly bleak, morning-after quality. (We’ll get back to the CIA in a minute.)
Day One was undoubtedly exciting: all these folks who knew each other only under screen names finally meeting in the flesh — fairly prepossessing flesh in some cases, less so in others. I hope there were at least a few hookups, though as a journalist, I personally would have declined embedding (not that it was offered, dammit).
Day Two has had the slightly tentative, halting air of a post-coital breakfast. Perhaps that’s why the Kosniks turned from each other’s now-known, and suddenly too-familiar faces, to the safer ground of celebrity-worship. The first celebrity made available for the purpose was Ambassador Joseph Wilson, husband of “outed” CIA agent Valerie Plame and whistle-blower on the Niger yellowcake story .
Wilson is a classic FSO type. He’s well-spoken, he knows how to play gravitas in the left hand and levity in the right simultaneously, and he seems to be profoundly comfortable in his own skin, without a shred of Kos’ conscious and showy arriviste self-assurance. Wilson’s Paderewski coiffure says that he is a man of culture as well as a man of the world, and if ever I saw a coiffure that wasn’t lying, it’s Wilson’s.
The Kosniks ate him up. Standing ovations, big belly laughs at every donnish little witticism — he’s the guy they’d all like to be. And when he dropped the tidbit that his Frau had the best score with an AK-47 on the CIA rifle range, I feel sure a lot of ’em crossed the line from wanting to be him to wanting to do him. Or her. I felt a little frisson myself, to tell the truth. (For her, of course. Ahem.)
Wilson repeatedly referred to the “national security” of the United States, and flirted with accusing the administration of treason — an accusation made explicit by one of his fellow panelists, another ex-CIA guy, Larry Johnson, who has been breaking blogsphere lances left and right on Plame’s behalf ever since she became a household name. Johnson was apparently a bud of Valerie’s in the Agency, lucky dog.
Now “treason” and “national security,” it seems to me, are expressions that ought to send any Lefty running for cover. But it didn’t have that effect on the Kosniks. They loved it. They were delighted to be on the same side as this orotund, world-weary vieux-prepster Foreign Service dude,
I’m lurking, under deep, deep cover — disguised as a security guard,
Heh…cool. An outsider opinion who is not a neocon
Israeli Court Finds US-Born, Mad-Dog Prof Guilty of Lbeling CounterPuncher Neve Gordon
Judge Nails “Holocaust-Denier” Smear
By IRA MOSKOWITZ
Haifa University economist Steven Plaut was convicted last week of libeling a fellow academic [and CounterPuncher], Neve Gordon of Ben-Gurion University’s Department of Politics and Government, and ordered to pay the plaintiff NIS 80,000(aprox. $18,600) in compensation plus NIS 15,000 (approx. $3,500) in legal fees.
Plaut, who teaches in the Graduate School of Business Administration, has called Gordon a “fanatic anti-Semite” and a “Judenrat wannabe.” Such statements overstep the bounds of free speech and constitute libel, Nazareth Magistrate’s Court Judge Reem Naddaf ruled last week.
Plaut, 55, is originally from Philadelphia. He received his doctorate from Princeton University before immigrating to Israel in 1981. Besides his academic work in economics, he publishes scathing, right-wing commentaries in several print and online publications.
Gordon, 41, is a third-generation Israeli and left-wing activist who completed a Ph.D. at Notre Dame University and began teaching at Ben-Gurion University (BGU) in 1999.

I got something in the mail today….
Play it.:omg:
A personality crisis…I’m a prisoner in my own mind
A personality crisis — I said mama, mama, I’m one of a kind
sorry I missed the reception at Scary Monster Music :omg:
How’s the music?:omg:
I love it…listening to it for the second time right now…I take it one side of a rehearsal
I did not have a mic for that rehearsal. There is one now.
I dig the guy who’s playing the recorder flute 😉
The guest mentioned that 133 votes separated Governor Gregoire-D from her opponent. There was a hotly contested recount. Ed Schultz did much on his show to ensure that the recount(s) took place. (So did Randi Rhodes and AAR.)
Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell barely beat Shellfish heir Slade Gorton in 2000. Interestingly enough, it was the Nader campaign that probably brought out enough voters so that the democratic candidate would win. (Hartmann said some good things about Nader on his national show recently.)
Can you hear the singer?
One side, as filler.
Ready to go to Kinko’s and slap a zine together.
I am talking to myself.
I’m listening to it again, I’ll tell you if I do. I heard someone singing to the “Warriors” song
oh cool!!!
I wish I had visuals
The two songs at the start are by someone else. Computer manipulation. Took Iron Maiden riff and sang Electric Warrior. And a Clash song for Personality Crisis. I think I can sing better that that.
I was going to say that voice sounded like the guy in AC/DC…
“Stand by me, or not at all…”
NOW I hear a voice singing “Battle in the Sky,” is that you?
Bad imitation of him. The AAC/DC guy can really sing.
Susan:: Can you post “it” on your blog or send “it” to Melina so we call all hear “it” ?? .. or is Nicki copywrited or something or is it personal ??:banana::omg:
Is it the first song on side one?
yeah, the Clash, Train in Vain
not sure, sounds like a new one is starting, hold on
It is a rehearsal. Wait for the documentary to be released.
“Baby Once in Awhile” I think…
The first two songs on side one are not by Corrupted System. Side two is all Corrupted System.
Nicki: Do you have any other “documentaries “posted on the net some place. ??????:omg::bow:
“Once in a While.” Yes. That is on side 2.
sounds pretty good for a rehearsal…a lot of fun stuff going on at different moments…yay, a documentary!!!
Some filmmakers from New Orleans made one about a year ago.
Once in Awhile may be my favorite Nicki song
I must tell you, the band is tight. Good at coming up with songs and new arrangements through space jams.
That’s exciting…I can’t wait to see it
That was just me singing into a cheap recorder. I finally secured a Shure microphone. The latest rehearsal is better.
sounds like you guys got a good thing going! I’m playing it on a crappy stereo tape player but I can imagine how it sounded live
thanks so much for sending this, and I can play it in my car (and will) because my car is ancient and still has a cassette player 🙂
Hey! Cassette Culture Rules!
yeah!!! I hope they don’t disappear
Has vinyl disappeared? There is a new book out on cassette culture. (I have not read it yet.)
cool, I didn’t know that. People made fun of me because I still have like three shoeboxes full of cassettes that I made over the years. Some of music, some of just of weird stories my friends and I wrote and recorded
People on this blog, I’ll bet. People who quickly grasp new technology can be like that. (Not always; not all of them.)
“Herrrre’s what she did to me!” Ah, the Bitch song, hehe
Yeah, I don’t give up the things I love very easily, and I loved cassettes. There are a lot of great memories centered around taping all kinds of shit 🙂
The Bitch drives me insane….:omg:
(She may be your neighbor.)
yeah, I understand she could be from NY or CT!!! OK, she might be this woman I work with named Anita….
:omg::omg:
well so much for anonymous blogging …no, I don’t think that beeyotch is the type to read this blog…
I liked the interview between you and Joel (in the NW); it was funny 🙂
He plays bass.
yeah, i see him listed on the band’s profile apge
You can play your tapes back and make a *.wav file on your computer if you have a aux out on your player and a line in input on the computer/sound card.. then most CD burning software will let you burn the *.wav file to a CD. To be like Nicki .. look it up…:omg::40::eek:
“Now she’s gotten bigger
A big fat crocodile.”
:omg::rofl2:
that’s not a bad idea…I’d have to check how my computer is set up. I do have burning software.
you know I’m sure he listened to a lot of Guns N Roses, I hear it as an influence in that “Bitch” song. Not musically but lyrically for sure
you play percussion too, cool (just reading this)
Who listened to Guns and Roses?
“Guns and Roses with a different sound
Mama I’m coming down on you.”
yeah, Axl ROSE. Coincidence? Maybe
The rehearsal is of bad quality. Not for widespread dispersal.
Absolute coincidence.
Understood. I’m sure I’ll hear better quality eventually 🙂
Anybody listening to Laura Flanders? OMJP people up next. I helped start that fucking group in August 1990.
well the tape just finished up right now, so I suppose I’ll put it on
Oh, you were listening to the tape exclusively.
so what group is this?
Political group. OMJP.
well yeah…I can’t have different things playing at once, I’d hear nothing 🙁
Started in 1990.
Olympia is a hotbed for political activity.
I did a research article on the founding of Fort Lewis.
cool, they sound happnin
Laura Flanders is good
I wrote for Works in Progress. My friend started it.
I thought it went kaput. WiP!
wow, good for you 🙂
http://www.omjp.org/
oh looks good, thanks.
2006: Olympia Resists Militarization of Our Port
.
Not in Any Town
Not in Rachel’s Name
Oppose Nazi Rally
Sunday, April 02, 2006
11:00 am
Sylvester Park [map]
OMJP opposes the message of hate that Nazis are bringing to our community on Sunday, April 2. We strongly object to their appropriation and exploitation of Rachel Corrie’s memory, and of her support for Palestinians and the Israeli peace movement. Like Hitler did, they try to exploit economic frustrations to turn whites against people of color, immigrants, Jews, the disabled, the LGBT community, and others. If we are silent, they will once again target our neighbors with harassment and violence. The purpose of our action is to prevent Nazis from using their rally to manipulate and recruit white youth, and to have a visible presence to counter their message of hate. statement|flyer|schedule
Olympia Unity in the Community is sponsoring a concurrent event (starting at noon) at Heritage Park.
gotta fight Nazis where ever they surface 😡
AntiWar Movement Question. To be effective, the antiwar movement must establish autonomy from the Democratic Party.
At 7:00 pacific time KTPK will be web casting a media conference from Seattle. Its free and you can get it by going to their web site. Some of our favorite not quite enough lefties will be there.
http://www.am1090seattle.com/
We brought thousands to the streets before the war started. Before both Gulf Wars. Now we get this lame stuff because “we have to elect democrats.”
I wish I could blog on Laura’s site. This activism is not NEW!
thanks Fred… I’ll check it out. Re: Anti War movement; it’s probably stifled by the Dems – I remember that when Cindy Sheehan started to become active, a lot of criticism regarding her came from liberals/democrats. Also, you have dems like Marcos Moulitsas who distances himself from protestors. Seems like many Dems (though not all) don’t want protest and only want armchair or voting booth activism
I remember chasing nazis out of Seattle one evening. Our march and rally concluded with a police riot.
I grew tired of the “must elect a Dem” thing. I’m not saying I would never vote for a Dem if I liked him/her, because I would…but the point is I’m going to vote my conscience whatever party the person belongs to.
Do you remember the big demonstrations that took place all over the country before Bush invaded Iraq? We must return to those days. Cindy is a bright spot among dull kosovitic culture.
here’s to chasing Nazis…:fist:
The problem with many liberals is that they won’t admit the stranglehold that corporations have over our society.
I think we’re heading in that direction. People are getting fed up. It’s not happening fast enough for me however. I’m hoping it doesn’t take yet another monumental Bush evil to set it all in motion
they’re not going to knock the corporations because that’s what they aspire to be…it’s called Yuppie culture. They want to be the oppressors.
We chased them out of Olympia, too. There was aa documentary film a few years ago about a young kid who was murdered by skinheads in Olympia.
all the activism in your neck of the wood is inspiring
I was slightly peeved at the Olympia people for making it seem that their movement is of recent vintage. Things may have been dormant, but Olympia has been heating up since the 1980s. I mean, going internationally. Radical activism.
yeah, that’s true…I’ve been hearing stuff coming from that direction for a lonnng time…
I picked up a community paper today called The New York Rat. Reports on lots of activism.
really? I’ll try to find that…
I must cut and paste the zine at Kinkos. Should not take too long. So much stuff to choose from.
The Shadow is better. Did you know that Grandpa Munster was a big activist in New York? Al Lewis.
well I’m sure you’ll make some good choices…
Yes! Actually I did hear that. Cool dude. He passed away this past year though, didn’t he?
He did an interview in an anarchist publication several years ago, did Al Lewis. I was surprised at how savvy he was.
yeah, you never know which famous people are going to to turn out to be cool that way, or which ones are just publicity hungry liberals, of course there’s a difference…
I damned near forgot the comic panels.:omg:
you know since I did that cartoon for you I’ve been so inspired to keep drawing, I haven’t drawn anything really since before the fire (2002!) I feel like I’m reborn.
nooo! don’t forget those! :omg:
Good. I can teach drawing. Many artists never learned how to enjoy drawing.
I just needed to break the ice again, and I just did that! (thanks to you) I guess I was hung up on the loss of all of my artwork, it kind of stunned me and for some reason I wouldn’t allow myself to create … I seem to be over that now though
I got that damned thing done. Not bad; almost dehydrated inside Kinkos.
No one has blogged in over 4 hours. I am BAAAAAACK! Listened to a little bit of Ed Schultz on the way back home. He called Ann Coulter a news slut.
:fist:
I fell asleep. I still have that music from the tape swirling around my brain though, I woke up thinking “once in awhile” LOL
Side one or side 2? I will make you a tape of the most recent rehearsal.
Who would lurk here at this hour? Randi Rhodes is on AAAR. This is the third time I have heard the show.
I’m still waking up literally. I think I hear voice singing but clearer than I heard in the tape
Hmm, yeah, I already heard that show twice… that’s the thing with AAR weekends, the shows are on an endless repeat loop. I would love a tape of the new rehearsal.
No one lurking at present…
http://www.kboo.fm/content/view/24/38/
KBOO
You know that radio host that is on that tape? Well, his show starts in one half hour.
4 down to 2. Me and…
ah, ok
ok, I guess we chased lurkers away just by mentioning them :rofl2:
Stream the station.
I’m streamming it, yeah 🙂
Chomsky followed by the VU.:omg:
hehe, I thought that sounded like him
It was him. Interesting that he closed with a jingle.
so what’s up, just happened to know the DJ and he invited you on the show?
Sounds like the Velvet Underground is singing through cardboard equipment.
I know how to get messages across.
that you do…
I think we have an audience. Shall we get steamy?
NO!!:jason:
I was thinking the same thing! What a mind I must have
The programmer shares a lot of my taste in music. I used to listen to an old show he did for years before I met him. (Big Bill Broonzy?)
Uh, I could go and come back sometime later, if you two would like, or somethin’?
cool, I guess the show’s going to start in about five minutes…I thought that was just Smiths, yeah
I’ll bet the Velvet track was a bootleg. I went to a record store today and found a few interesting recordings. One was a vinyl recording of Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex. The composer was the conductor. Jean Cocteau did the narration. It was $18. I did not buy it, hoping that it will be there when I have some money to spend.
5 people on board.:omg:
cool…Stavinsky’s “the Rite of spring” is all I can think of by him right now…
I think she said Gatemouth Brown.
hehe, is he saying what I think he is? LOL
:yawn:Later, people. My fingers hurt and I’m tired:peace:
goodnight Travis… :joe:
:nixon:
So, what do you have on?
hehe, if I type this the lurker factor will probably go up to like 20…
or even greater…so guess 🙂
See through night gown. Split up the middle. Bare feet.
LOL….hello????
mmmm. not wearing a nightgown.
and that’s all I’m going to say! ::insert angel emo:::
Track oufit. About ready to take the bottoms off.
:spank: LOL
:omg:
I submit. (Was I right?)
very close
anyway, ahem
so…good music…whatcha doin??
good radio station 🙂
hmmm…
Now listen to the stream…
the stream is still on, yeah
:bow::love: :omg:
:omg:
:rofl2:
OMG…
Rolf is in on the gag.
LOL :::smooch:::
A kiss instead of a spank! How hot is that?
So, are those bottoms off yet?
I am going to open a bottle of dry red wine.
well it seemed like the right response
:omg: would I do that????
LOL, he’s not going to play Nicki Rose, is he?
I’ll share thet wine with you “virtually,” I have a bottle in house…
He did not bring his cassette tape with him. I will have to request that he do so.
yes 🙂 There will be other nights.
I like dry red wine. Recently I bought a cheap bottle of Italian Red Wine. Was not paying attention. It was more sugary than Manischewitz.
:omg:
that’s pretty sweet 😮
yeah, I can do without anything that sweet right now
I poured it down the drain. I like Chianti. This stuff I bought is a little sweet. But good.
That stuff is undrinkable. sacrificial wine.
a little sweet is ok. Just nothing that reminds me Jewish wine!
You have passed fred on the poster list.
oh my god, I’m in the elite class now!
I remember once I brought a bottle of Manischewitz to a social gathering of Middle east peace activists. Over half were Jewish or of Jewish descent. I did not think it would be the sacrificial stuff. what a faux pas on my part.
Never Again!
666! Did you hear that?:omg:
hehe…well how were you to know…
the aliens!!!
he said “naked” ! :nixon:
How did you know? We used to drink Mogen David 20/20 when I was a juvenil delinquent. I thought it would be something like that.
Current 93: Black Ships in the Sky.
I don’t know, I guess some people do drink that wine, but it’s sort of a private joke among me and friends that that wine is just for Passover
Who is naked?
::shrug:::
That is not a private joke. That wine is strictly for Passover–or it should be.
I just caught the word “naked” in that song ….yep, that’s it
I know of temples that do not even drink Manischewitz for Passover.
the new blog is now open…
8. 522 SE 5th- C.E.S. Wood’s Office (1920)
C.E.S. Wood (known as Col. Wood) came to Portland penniless in 1883. Over the next thirty years he came to live two separate lives. In one, he was a well-known poet and lawyer. He also founded the Portland Art Museum, directed the Portland Public Library, and was an influential member of Portland’s business and social elite. At the same time, Col. Wood thought of himself as a social anarchist and believed that American capitalism was an exploitative system. Therefore, in his second life, he was a vocal supporter of the IWW and defended Emma Goldman, Marie Equi, Tom Burns, and other IWW members, all for free. He was also a strong supporter of birth control, women’s rights, and civil rights. In fact, he quit the Oregon Bar Association in 1913, because it denied membership to an African American lawyer. He kept two different offices, reflecting his two different lives, but used the money he made from his business life to finance the radical causes he believed in. He left Portland in 1920 for Los Gatos, California, where he built an amazing house that still stands.
