Well, what’s going on today? Apparently there’s been a rash of flag burning, ‘cuz the Senate is gonna take up a flag burning amendment (how they can keep anything lit in this weather is beyond me). I’m not sure how that fits in with the whole Nicole Kidman getting married thing, but I guess exempting multimillionares from the estate tax works out OK for her and her kids. Odds are they’ll never need to survive on a minimum wage job, so killing any increase there shouldn’t be a problem. They’re white and privileged, so killing the Voting Rights Act works out OK, too. And I certainly doubt they’ll be joining the military, so staying in Iraq permanently should be fine, too.
So let’s hear it for the rich folks. Nothing’s too good for ’em, as long as they keep their yaps shut and don’t express any “bad” opinions. As for the rest of us, well, try not to get stuck in a flooded subway tunnel.

Male, 44, Delaware, household of three, income less than $8,860

Nation divided on troop withdrawal deadline
Poll shows rebound in President Bushβs job approval rating
snip
About half, 51 percent, oppose a deadline for getting out of Iraq, but the margin has dwindled as insurgents have continued to kill U.S. troops. The poll found that 47 percent now favor some kind of deadline, up eight percentage points since December. Two thirds of Democrats support setting a deadline, more than double the proportion of Republicans who want a timetable for withdrawal. Among independents, 44 percent support a deadline.
snip
But the survey offered some hopeful signs for Bush and the Republicans as they prepare for the midterm elections. The big advantage that Democrats held on virtually every major issue has narrowed or reversed. On the question of which party is best able to handle the situation in Iraq, the Democrats’ 14-point advantage in last month’s Post-ABC poll has been cut in half; they now have a 47 percent lead over Republicans’ 41 percent.
A month ago, Democrats held a five-point lead over Republicans on dealing with international terrorism. Republicans now hold a seven-point advantage. On the economy, the Democratic advantage has narrowed from 18 points to 13 points since May

According to the New York Times, Hurrican Katrina has “produced one of the most extraordinary displays of scams, schemes and stupefying bureaucratic bungles in modern history, costing taxpayers up to $2 billion,” RAW STORY has learned.

FEMA officials say they typically expect 1-3% of disaster relief funds to be improperly disbursed. However, in the cases of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, nearly 11% of the expenses to date are estimated to have been fraudulent — and as much as 21% of the money given directly to individuals.
The most disturbing cases are those which involve government officials accused of orchestrating elaborate scams involving bribes and extortion in connection with debris removal, provisions for relief workers, and unemployment benefits. Even a program set up by the American Red Cross resulted in an extraordinary level of waste and abuse.

If the democrats can take back Congress and then the White House, it will be interesting to see how far up their ass the traditional media is, as compared to their near total complacency (complicity, even) during the Bush II monarchy.
Posters at the right-wing Free Republic message board today were roused into a fury of indignation by a news story about the New York Times’ revelations of the administration’s illegal programs of warrant less surveillance. Posted by an individual calling himself or herself “pissant,” the story quoted Vice-President Cheney as saying:
“The New York Times has now twice — two separate occasions — disclosed programs; both times they had been asked not to publish those stories by senior administration officials. They went ahead anyway. The leaks to The New York Times and the publishing of those leaks is very damaging.”

NIZMIT HILL, Israel (Reuters) – Israeli tanks and troops massed near Gaza on Tuesday for a threatened offensive against Palestinian militants as the Israeli government said it would target Hamas leaders if an abducted soldier was not freed.
In northern Gaza, Palestinians blocked roads with dirt and barbed wire. Militants wielding automatic rifles and anti-tank rockets rigged explosive devices along a road as tensions hit their highest since Israel quit Gaza nearly a year ago.
The United States urged Israel to give diplomatic negotiations a chance to win the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit, who was seized on Sunday by militants who also killed two soldiers in a raid on a military border post.

It is fair to say that since 1980, conservative candidates have been winning overall more than have liberal candidates. From the presidency to the Congress to the state legislatures to the governorships, this trend has been much reported.
Moreover, the liberals who do win, like Clinton, Lieberman, Bayh and assorted governors are often more corporatists than liberals on major subjects such as foreign policy, military budgets, the Federal Reserve, corporate welfare, real regulation, tax policy and consumer protection.
It could be that more often than is normally recognized, the self-described conservative voters spend more time personally interacting with one another in situations where “social” can easily move to “political.”
More often than the liberal voters, they participate in activities associated with clubs, and churches where person to person conversations abound.
The above areas of liberal domination involve more passive, spectator, celluloid or “cool” internet occasions. And after a while a chronically humorous way of looking at politics becomes a distraction, even though it may be a style that avoids commercial media censorship.
Of course, money in politics comes more easily to corporatist candidates, as does the media. For example, extreme right-wingers get on talk shows, receive media attention or have their own profitable shows like Pat Robertson does. Who are the extreme left-wingers, who receive any press, other than an occasional newspaper picture showing them being dragged away from a protest at the IMF, World Bank or toxic dump site?
The lesson? Politics, even in an age of electronic supremacy, is still strongly moved by the person-to-person, conversational, affinity, communal groupings in our society. Big TV ads cost money and the corporatists can buy them over and over again. But the word of mouth from friend to friend, relative to relative, neighbor to neighbor and worker to worker is not something anyone wants to sell short.

Israel’s Deadly Siege of Palestine
By ALEXANDER COCKBURN
“The idea is to put Palestinians on a diet but not make them die of hunger,” commented Dov Weisglass, senior advisor to Israeli Prime Ministers Sharon and Olmert, when asked how Israel should deal with the new Hamas government. Even these disgustingly callous words scarcely do justice to the collective punishment to Palestinians (illegal under international law) being inflicted by Israel on the people of Palestine for democratically electing a government that refuses to accede to Israeli demands.
The situation is desperate. Since the new Hamas-dominated government took office in January 2006, record levels of poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, malnutrition, movement restrictions and social unrest of all kinds have been reported.
Here is the grim picture as culled from available sources by Jennifer Loewenstein of the Refugee Studies Centre in Oxford, the U.K.
In addition to an economic siege imposed by the governments of the United States and the European Union -in which all aid to the Palestinian Authority (and in some cases to NGOs as well) has been cut, bank transfers suspended, contacts with and visas for new government members effectively banned, and $55 million in tax revenues illegally withheld each month- comprehensive closure has been imposed on the territories restricting access to goods and services within the West Bank and imposing draconian movement restrictions on the entire Palestinian population.
Israel has kept the Karni (al-Muntar) industrial crossing into the Gaza Strip shut for weeks at a time locking out medicines, food and goods as well as preventing the export of agricultural produce from Gaza. Approximately 165,000 employees of the Palestinian Authority have gone without pay for more than three months affecting the lives of at least 700,000 people. Doctors, nurses, teachers, civil servants, policemen and others return home empty handed each day to families whose overall levels of poverty and malnutrition have grown dramatically. Save the Children UK Program Manager Jan Coffey reports that in Gaza now 78% of the population lives below the poverty line ($2 per day) and that 10% of children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition…
http://www.counterpunch.org
I see that AAR news is firmly in the mainstream (extreme right!) when it comes to reporting the news from Israel/Palestine. “Recognize Israel’s right to exist.” If only there was fair reporting on this.
If I had access to, say, Rachel Maddow’s blog, I would post balanced reports about the Middle East; wonder how quick I would be censored by the liberals.
Hitchens Hails “Glorious War”
The recent memorial for long-term New York Review co-editor Barbara Epstein, sadly felled by cancer on June 15, was disfigured by an unseemly outbursts from Christopher Hitchens. There was a list of invitees for the private ceremony and C. Hitchens — a sometime NYT contributor – was not on the list. He implored to be admitted, and some misguidedly decent soul gave him the green light.
Visibly taken with drink, in the estimate of at least one observer, Hitchens showed up and soon made his way to Jean Stein, a close friend of Barbara Epstein, also editor of Grand Street in recent years. Hitchens spared Stein the habitual presentation of his hairy cheek but made a low, facetious bow and offered his hand.
Stein icily declined, saying she had no desire to shake hands with him for many reasons, not least the fact that Hitchens had attacked one of her best friends, Edward Said, while he was on his death bed.
As Hitchens retreated, someone remarked to him, “So your glorious war has turned out to be a total disaster, hasn’t it?”
“It is glorious,” the sodden scrivener blared, “and it is my war because it needed Paul Wolfowitz and myself to go and convince the President to go to war.”
As mourners digested this megalomanic outburst, Hitchens continued, “And we are going to kill every Al Qaida terrorist and Baathist in the country and that’s a good thing. They need to be killed and we will kill them.”
Heh. What’s this “we” shit?
Visibly taken with drink, in the estimate of at least one observer, Hitchens showed up

You would be surprised at how many lefties read Hitchens. I myself find the whole situation a tragedy of some sort. I used to read Hitchens a lot; I did not always agree with him, but I always learned something. I always forget how he trashed, while he was on his deathbed, one of the great men of our times, Edward Said. That is probably why Cockburn relentlessly trashes him. Oh, well…I am not going to defend that drunken neocon.

A Congressman took to the House floor yesterday insisting that illegal border crossings from Mexico have slowed due to fear of rape, robbery and beatings at the hands of U.S. National Guardsmen, RAW STORY has learned.
Representative Ted Poe (R-TX) began his one-minute statement by characterizing the US-Mexican border as a war zone. “Mister Speaker,” he began, “news from the front: The border war continues. Generalissimo Fox and the Mexican media have taken a setback in the illegal invasion of the United States.”

It isn’t, of course. But the Dems who are running for re-election this year are probably too chickenshit to take a stand, for fear that this non-issue will cost them votes when their opponents start the attack ads questioning why Dems hate America.
I haven’t seen a listing yet of who voted yea or nay, but I’m assuming Bill Nelson was one of the Dems who voted for the amendment. He’s ahead of Cruella by almost 30 points, for chrissake. Give me a break.:blech:
Apparently he is not in need of any additional contributions from me, because he’s not going to be getting any, although I have a sneaking suspicion that the person I did donate to today did the same thing he did due to being in the same boat but not almost 30 points ahead of their opponent. Hope I’m proven wrong.
I say we cut Texas loose. Let ’em go, and let them sell their oil to China. Up in the Northeast, we’ll just cut a deal with Canada for everything they’ve got, since they’re our #1 source of foreign imports anyway. Mexico’s a close second, so we’ll take theirs, too, and we can even agree to pay their folks a decent living wage if they wanna come on up here. Just stop by and let us know who you are – no hassles, no quota, no exploitation. Anything else, we can get from Hugo – at least until we develop alternative energy sources. Oh, and dummy is no longer eligible to be prez, so he has to go back to Midland, or Crawfor, or whatever. He’s not allowed to go to Maine, ‘cuz we’re building a big old fence to keep the undesireables out.
Israeli troops crossed the border into southern Gaza early Wednesday after air strikes targeted a power plant and at least two bridges, the Israeli military told CNN. The campaign is aimed at securing the release of a soldier kidnapped by Palestinian militants. Palestinians have been building sand mounds on border roads to try to slow a land attack.

Oh and regarding Kidman…the Cruise-Kidman children are half scientologist and one of them is black…but he still wont have to worry about Iraq or minimum wage, I’d guess….If she has a bump them more power to her because she went through tons of infertility treatments with Cruise…and this might be the indication that we need to prove that Cruise is in fact GAY and had a stand in do the nasty with his Katie….
I suppose Id have a better grasp on all of this really important stuff if I had bought the NY Post while I was down there, but I went with no news at all…except the first day when I actually went on my phone’s internet to check the news.
Kidman…Urban…who care about them! The really big news is that Star Jones is OUT, OUT, OUT…thus, removing a scary hour from the day in which I must avert my eyes from the gym TV sets lest I have an anxiety attack (not that Rosie O’donnell is gonna be any better though…)
OK thats the popular culture news…now Im gonna try to scan for real news.
I hope Mr is OK over in the war.

Breaking news in Scarborough Country!!! The senate killed the flag burning thing…what a bunch of crap and a waste of time. The only interesting thing is that it seems that Pap is arguing this thing in a clip…though perhaps one could get that on crooks and liars rather than have to look at old Joe….
only 4 incidents of flag burning last year and 3 the year before…incidence of this went down after the supremem court ruled that it was OK to burn it….
This is a smoke screen but they are also gonna try to paint the Dems as the flag burning baby killers….I dont think its gonna help them. This is a desperate move by a desperate party….
I am going to the city square. I expect to see a crowd of people there, protesting the Israeli attack on Gaza. Call the White House. Demand that they order Israel to stop their attack.
