An official told a national television audience that the results wouldn’t be available until after a detailed recount of millions of ballots later this week. GENEVA– Globalization moves in fits and starts, sometimes three steps forward, sometimes two steps back, sometimes at a gallop, sometimes at a crawl. It took a nasty tumble last weekend, when a meeting intended to advance a worldwide trade agreement ended in failure.
The gathering was supposed to produce a detailed blueprint that would lead to the completion late this year of the Doha round of talks, which are aimed at lowering barriers to commerce among the 149 member nations of the World Trade Organization. Instead, the breakdown laid bare the strong resistance among many, and perhaps most, of the WTO’s members to the sort of market-opening measures that the Bush administration and its free-trade allies envisioned when the round was launched in 2001.
Most striking was the defiance expressed by trade ministers from developing countries at a news conference after the meeting had ended with virtually no movement in long-held negotiating positions.
One after another, Latin Americans, Africans and Asians on the podium pointed out that the talks had been proclaimed a “development round,” with the interests of nations like theirs supposedly paramount. They asserted that the biggest concessions must come from rich countries and that they had no intention of exposing vulnerable groups, such as subsistence farmers, to the chill winds of foreign competition. Accordingly, they said, they must retain extensive rights to exempt “special” and “sensitive” products from tariff cuts.

It is a bill that poses serious threats to Medicaid and SCHIP funding and it is moving through Congress this summer.
The “SOS” bill (S. 3521), sponsored by Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), makes several changes to the way Congress passes and implements a budget each year. If it became law, S. 3521 would force automatic cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and SCHIP and give Congress and the President new tools for reducing or realigning Medicaid and most other federal programs.
Do all of you know what SCHIP is? Well, I’m going to remind you. SCHIP was enacted in 1997 and currently provides health care coverage to approximately 4.3 million children.

They are not outraged that the troops committed the deed; they are outraged that the media reported it. These “conservatives,” who proudly wear their patriotism on their sleeves, dismiss the reports of the incident as a Big Lie floated by “the anti-American liberal media” in order to demoralize Americans and reduce public support for the war.
Playing to this audience, Col. Jeffrey Snow, a U.S. brigade commander in Baghdad, told AFP News that news coverage could cause the U.S. to lose the war. In other words, what we are doing in Iraq cannot stand the light of day, so reporters must not report or the word will get out.
Many Bush supporters believe that truth is not on our side and must be suppressed. Yet, they support a war that is too shameful to report.
I have made it clear in my columns that Bush supporters are not true conservatives. They are brownshirts with the same low intelligence and morals as Hitler’s enthusiastic supporters. And they are just as resistant to facts.

I was just listening to las wednesday of Martc’s show which I think they reran last nite, and he did another thing on the teachers union and whats going on. I guess the union is against charter schools because they are non union…thats one issue. I didnt hear the whole thing.
I spent the better part of the afternoon, after seeing my baby bird and getting my Mom at the station, at the emergency clinic for this eye…its so bad…but, its just a very bad blood vessel with a clot. Great! My eye explodes right before Will’s surgery.
The rich thing was that the Dr said that I shouldnt lift anything…ha!…this after I carried the a/c in and have to set up Will’s new bed and move his TV…I also dont know if he will be able to walk out of the car and into the house tomorrow. Maybe it wont be as bad as it could be. Of course the eye is getting worse because Ive been carrying these things around…but what can I do? Hire Mexicans!…since no teenager is around to help me this summer as a sorta au pair/sitter/carrier, I think I may have to look to the immigrant community, as I do for everything these days.

Recently, a committee formed by the administration at CU found Ward Churchill guilty of several instances of plagiarism, and three out of the five recommended that he be fired as tenured professor and dismissed from the university. I looked at the infractions, not enough information to decide on the quality of the charges. Remember the right had a field day over alleged plagiarism by MLK. Was Churchill’s pecadillos likewise minor, or much ado about nothing? Anyway, has Churchill formally responded to the charges and guilty verdicts. (I was on a list that was discussing the matter, and got nauseated at the self-righteous pettiness of many of the posters.) But still…What is his response? My hunch is that he is an entertainier with an identiy crisis. Is he really Native American? (Who gives a fuck?) I remember a professor who said he was CIA, or something. But I said that the one book I had read of his (Agents of Repression) was factual. (I knew one of the activists who the feds tried to kill in San Diego. Churchill’s account meshed with the account I knew of the history.) The professor said it was public records. Churchill had easy access and did stenographer work. Oh well…Has Churchill defended himself yet?
Churchill is a curious figure…I’d like to know what he says next. My feeling is the right did/will blow up anything and everything about him to unreal proportions or outright lie. but if he doesn’t defend himself it will make him look worse

University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill issued a stinging rebuttal Tuesday to an official recommendation that he be fired, comparing the campus disciplinary process to the Scopes Monkey Trial and charging that his accusers are guilty of the same misconduct for which he stands charged.
Churchill vowed that the fight over his job has just begun and predicted that interim CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano’s call for his ouster “sets the stage for the taxpayers to waste another quarter-million dollars” while his case goes to the next level of appeal.
On Monday, DiStefano recommended that Churchill be fired for a pattern of research misconduct that includes plagiarism.
However, DiStefano insisted that his decision had nothing to do with the controversy that Churchill stirred in an essay on the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack.
In that essay, Churchill compared some of the victims in the World Trade Center attack with Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann.
In a point-by-point critique of the decision by DiStefano, Churchill alleged that the interim chancellor:
• Joined Gov. Bill Owens and state lawmakers in denouncing Churchill’s work on “explicitly ideological grounds.”
• Violated the laws of the Regents of Colorado by creating and leading an unprecedented special committee “devoted to investigating the political content of my scholarship.”
• Actively solicited allegations of research misconduct to create the impression in the media that other scholars were independently and voluntarily leveling the charges.
• Routinely broke confidentiality rules concerning the case by issuing press releases “designed to sustain the media ‘feeding frenzy.’ ”
• Refused Churchill’s request that the panel be composed of academics from outside the university and instead drew three of the five members from the campus, thus ensuring a biased panel.

I had not seen that article by Churchill in the Denver area news but both of the papers are owned by the same company.. The Denver Post just represents a slightly more left hand view than the snooze. There are some local papers like the Boulder Daily Camera which are more left wing but hardly anyone in the metro area reads that.. not that many read the other two either..:yuck::eek::tongue:

Forest Service officials said they had issued more than 500 citations, mostly for camping without a permit and drug violations.
Diann Ritschard, spokeswoman for the Routt forest, said the campers were expected to begin leaving over the rest of the week.
The gathering officially began Saturday, but Ritschard said law-enforcement officers began issuing citations on June 12, when the first members of the loosely organized, nationwide band arrived.
Through Sunday, officers had issued 531 citations, including 287 for camping without a permit and 153 for drug violations.
The Forest Service refused to issue the group a camping permit, citing fire danger caused by dry conditions and a widespread outbreak of tree-killing beetles. A federal magistrate set up court in a nearby fire station and held scores of hearings on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.
Ritschard said “a significant number” of people failed to appear in court as ordered, and officers were trying to find them in their camps.
Ritschard said Forest Service is trying to work with the campers to restore areas showing wear from the gathering, which covered about a 4-square mile area.
She said vegetation has been trampled, fire pits have been dug and trails up to six feet wide have been worn into the forest.
Rainbow Family members have said some of the group always stay behind to restore areas where they have camped.

How Old George conveyed his message was certainly no mystery to the US public. One need only recall the 24-hour-per-day dissemination of bombardment videos on every available TV channel, and the exceedingly high ratings of these telecasts, to gain a sense of how much they knew.
In trying to affix a meaning to such things, we would do well to remember the wave of elation that swept America at reports of what was happening along the so-called Highway of Death: perhaps 100,000 “towel-heads” and “camel jockeys” – or was it “sand niggers” that week? – in full retreat, routed and effectively defenseless, many of them conscripted civilian laborers, slaughtered in a single day by jets firing the most hyper-lethal types of ordnance.
It was a performance worthy of the nazis during the early months of their drive into Russia. And it should be borne in mind that Good Germans gleefully cheered that butchery, too. Indeed, support for Hitler suffered no serious erosion among Germany’s “innocent civilians” until the defeat at Stalingrad in 1943.
There may be a real utility to reflecting further, this time upon the fact that it was pious Americans who led the way in assigning the onus of collective guilt to the German people as a whole, not for things they as individuals had done, but for what they had allowed – nay, empowered – their leaders and their soldiers to do in their name.
If the principle was valid then, it remains so now, as applicable to Good Americans as it was the Good Germans. And the price exacted from the Germans for the faultiness of their moral fiber was truly ghastly.
Returning now to the children, and to the effects of the post-Gulf War embargo – continued bull force by Bush the Elder’s successors in the Clinton administration as a gesture of its “resolve” to finalize what George himself had dubbed the “New World Order” of American military/economic domination – it should be noted that not one but two high United Nations officials attempting to coordinate delivery of humanitarian aid to Iraq resigned in succession as protests against US policy.
One of them, former U.N. Assistant Secretary General Denis Halladay, repeatedly denounced what was happening as “a systematic program . . . of deliberate genocide.”

During the 90’s there were several groups in the US that tried unsuccessfully to fight the Genocide of the Iraqi children by the “sanctions” the US imposed. They kind of like the left as a whole had most of their objections fall on deaf ears.. With the inability of the Rethugs to govern and the rest of the world turning against us that may soon end.. The sooner the better as far as I am concerned. Economic collapse,, 20% inflation ( that’s already happening).. Wide spread high unemployment.. Maybe between songs , sports and trying to be funny Riley and Maddow will come to that conclusion too. … Nawww..:barf::yuck::eek:
