I’m still pretty beat from Friday night, but let’s see what the Sunday news programs have in store for us today.
On Press the Meat, The potatoheaded one has Newt Gingrich (why?) and Senator MBNA, Joe Biden. Then its Count Novakula, who will desperately try to pretend he’s still relevant. Fortunately Timmy has his back.
Over at Faze the Nation, bush buddy Bobby Schieffer has Condi “the Lizard Queen” Rice on to tell us how great things have been going during her rein as Secretary of State and presidential concubine (I understand she’s been trying to get dubya to start smoking cigars). Then it’s Richard Haas (unfortunately not the Richard Haas who’s president of Steelworkers local 9443-1, but wingnut Dick Haas of the Council on Foreign Relations). Hey, how’re them foreign relations goin’, Dick? And, just to make the show fair and balanced, it’s DINO Jane Harman.
The Lizard Queen slithers on over to Fux News Sunday, and, speaking of creepy slithering things, so does VA Senator George Allen. Chris “twinkieass” Wallace also adds CT Senator Chris Dodd, and Philippe Cousteau (note to Fox – that’s with three p’s – but not all in a row – geniuses), president of Earth Echo International, and son of the late Philippe Cousteau, who was the son of the late Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who was the son of another dead Cousteau.
Over on This Weak with George Snufalufagus, it’s yet another talking lizard performance, as Condi discusses the “brewing tensions” in the Middle East (note to ABC; you can take the pot off the burner, ‘cuz this shit aint just brewed, it’s burned), and then Madeline “Vincent Gardenia in Drag” Albright will be on to tell us what she thinks of the the job the current Sec State has been doing. At the roundtable, it’s Sam “worst toupee in the business” Donaldson, Cokie “scag” Roberts, Fareed “Token” Zakaria, and George :jerk: Will. Plus, former olympic gymnast Kerri Strug will tell us how she’s been bending over backwards to fight crime at the DOJ.
On CNN’s Late Emission with the Wolfman, it’s White House mouthpiece Dan Bartlett, and then Shimon Peres will explain to us why killing Lebanese civilians and attacking Lebanese infrastructure isn’t terrorism (I mean, it’s not like they didn’t clear it with dubya first). Next up is token redneck, Trent Lott, and token DINO, Dianne Feinstein. Then, Syrian Ambassador to the US, Dr. Imad Moustapha, Iraqi National Security Advisor, Dr. Mowaffak al-Rubaie (my security advice? stay the hell out of Iraq), Pakistan’s foreign minister, Khursid Mahmood Kasuri, and Professor of Middle East Studies Fouad Ajami will all tell us how great it is that the US had brought “Western Style” Democracy to the region. And finally, the astronauts aboard the space shuttle will be on to tell us that, on second thought, they’d just as soon stay in fucking orbit.
Later, on 60 Minutes, as if you aren’t getting enough facism from your government, Morley Safer tells you how you might just get an extra dose of facism from your emplyer, too. Then Scott Pelley rolls out a report about two orphans and the Holocaust, and Bob Simon does a story about how Bode Miller is the best skier in the US, even though he choked in the Olympics (because, um, this is a story we’ve all been clamoring for).
An all new episode of Deadwood is on HBO, plus new shows of the 4400 and the Dead Zone (at least, I think they’re new; I have to confess I didn’t bother to check). Enjoy your Sunday, and rest up. You’ll need your strength to face that Maronless Monday coming up tomorrow.

This is key:.
[A major source of the strife between Israel and Palestine is demonstrated when] Olmert announced his annexation program, what’s euphemistically called “convergence” and described here [in the US] often as a “withdrawal,” but in fact it’s a formalization of the program of annexing the valuable lands, most of the resources, including water, of the West Bank and cantonizing the rest and imprisoning it, since he also announced that Israel would take over the Jordan Valley. Well, that proceeds without extreme violence or nothing much said about it.

[T]he [U.S.] veto of the UN resolution is standard. That goes back decades. The U.S. has virtually alone been blocking the possibility of diplomatic settlement, censure of Israeli crimes and atrocities. When Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982, the US vetoed several resolutions right away, calling for an end to the fighting and so on, and that was a hideous invasion. And this continues through every administration. So I presume it will continue at the G8 meetings.
The United States regards Israel as virtually a militarized offshoot, and it protects it from criticism or actions and supports passively and, in fact, overtly supports its expansion, its attacks on Palestinians, its progressive takeover of what remains of Palestinian territory, and its acts to, well, actually realize a comment that Moshe Dayan made back in the early ’70s when he was responsible for the Occupied Territories. He said to his cabinet colleagues that we should tell the Palestinians that we have no solution for you, that you will live like dogs, and whoever will leave will leave, and we’ll see where that leads. That’s basically the policy. And I presume the U.S. will continue to advance that policy in one or another fashion.
NOAM CHOMSKY
The Lebanese people, habitues as few people are of the lethal, violent and unexpected, yesterday awoke to the kind of news they thought they had put behind them. Their brand-new airport, the pride of their postwar reconstruction, had been bombarded by Israeli war planes along with a host of other infrastructure projects, bringing death and devastation on a more than Gazan scale.
For some it inevitably brought to mind a bleak winter day in 1968 when, out of the blue, helicopter-borne Israeli commandos landed on the old airport and blew up 13 passenger jets, almost the entire fleet of the national carrier. The pretext: of two Palestinians who killed an Israeli at Athens airport, one came from a refugee camp in Lebanon, then an entirely peaceable country. The significance of this most spectacularly disproportionate reprisal was something the Lebanese could hardly even have guessed at then. But it was a very early portent of the long nightmare to come: military conflict with Israel, eventually to be compounded with an atrocious civil war that it did much to engender.
There is something ominously similar, in possible consequences, about yesterday’s repeat Israeli performance. Ever since the Israelis ended their occupation of southern Lebanon in 2000, this weak and diminutive country has enjoyed an almost unmarred respite from the turbulence of the region to which it so easily and habitually falls victim. But overnight it has been plunged back into the role it endured for a quarter century and more – that of hapless arena for other people’s wars, as well as pawn in the ambitions and machinations of regional players far more powerful than itself.

Do you remember the space age buildings of a few decades ago, back when the space program captured the attention of millions and optimism was at an all time high? To:ย White Castle Management Co.
We are students and professionals, young and old, of Westchester, who demand to enjoy the fine flavors of White Castle hamburgers. We are tired of traveling to the far reaches of the North Bronx just to experience the unreal union of onion and beef one more time. No longer are we satisfied with being supersaturated by McDonalds locations and their cholesterol-laden pseudo-meat. No longer are we satisfied with do-it-yourself White Castle burger packs from the frozen-food aisles. They are a nice gesture, but Middle and Southern Westchester demands a location to call its own. It is what we crave.

In Fast Food: Roadside Restaurants in the Automobile Age, John Jakle and Keith Sculle contemplate the origins, architecture, and commercia1 growth of wayside eateries in the United States over the past 100 years. Written in the informative style of their previous two books, The Gas Station in America and The Motel in America, this new volume examines the impact of the automobile on the restaurant business and offers a thorough account of roadside dining. Jakle and Sculle begin with America in the 1850s, when restaurants came into their own, and trace the evolution from coffee shops, main street cafes, and diners to drive-ins and drive-throughs. Focusing on the people who created and ran these enterprises, the authors recount the rise of early franchises such as White Castle and White Tower and the later dominance of large corporate chains such as Burger King, Hardee’s, and – the giant of them a11- McDonald’s.
As Fast Food makes clear, the story of these unpretentious eating places is the story of modern American culture. At first, one-story wood-frame sheds were modeled on stalls at carnivals and amusement parks, where many foods that were once novelties but are now basic to the American diet – such as the hamburger and the hot dog were popularized. Architectura1 experimentation was a hallmark of the late 1920s and early 1930s, with stands built as giant oranges, lemons, milk cans, inverted ice cream cones, and milk cartons. By the 1950s, drive-ins and diners had become the icons of a generational subculture, places where teenagers sought freedom from parental surveillance and adult authority. In the late twentieth century, the roadside restaurant (like the gas station and motel) is an essential part of the modern American landscape – where intentional sameness of design “welcomes” every interstate driver.
I hope that book is illustrated ๐
Located in the New Jersey area is White Manna. This hamburger joint is a classic old eastern chain. But hurry in quickly for your greasy burger as there is only 2 left in New Jersey.

This wasn’t a road trip from Philadelphia to North Jersey, it was a pilgrimage.ย ย
White Manna’s burgers, lovingly called “Sliders” by those who grew up on them, start off as balls of ground beef dropped on the grill – smaller balls for single burgers, larger balls for doubles.ย The grill master, who also functions as emcee and social director, flattens them with a spatula and covers them with fresh onions.
One flipped the bun goes on top of the cooking burgers, sopping up the juices.
They sure ain’t pretty, but I’m not sure there’s a better burger, anywhere.

Hey, Suzie — here’s how you get to White Manna:
Take the GWB to NJ, follow the signs to Route 4 West. Follow Route 4 about 5-6 Miles, get off at the Hackensack Avenue exit. This puts you on Hackensack Avenue NORTH. Make a U-turn by the Best Western Hotel to get onto Hackensack Avenue SOUTH. Go about 2 miles, past the Target.
(If you want to check out the best German bakery in the world, duck into the Target parking lot, go to the opposite side, park the car and look south to find the B&W Bakery. Buy two crumb cakes — one for now, one to freeze.)
White Manna is on your LEFT. It’s a chrome-and-red place that looks like a diner that’s been squashed.
To get back, take Hackensack Avenue North and get on Route 4 East by the Coach House Diner.

“I serve the best hot dog in New Jersey.”ย Said with conviction by the man in the blue and yellow striped trailer who’s been selling them since 1971.ย His one rule, painted on the menu frame, “16 – under must say please.”
These are “Dirty Water” dogs, cooked in hot water.ย Dirty water is good, not bad.ย It’s not really dirty, just flavored from that day’s batch of dogs cooked in the water.ย It gives a dog a special flavor you don’t get with steamed or fried or grilled dogs.

I figured you would understand, Druid :pent::peace:
We could do a several page spread of where to eat/where to look when going from Philly or West C-Section to search for Electric Warrior. Lots of roadside stands.
:nixon: great idea!
So, are there any old diners and hamburger stands in Heartbury or Yonkers?
maybe down in Yonkers. Not so much here…it seems to be an urban thing or working class neighborhood thing. The more upscale you go the less often you get those interesting-looking places unfortunately.
New Jersey is probably chock full of them.
Hey Druid, let me know when you want to talk about string theory. I’m no John Schwartz, but I find it all very interesting. Ever since my undergrad days (the first time around), when I learned that light travels in a curved line in a 4 dimensional universe, I was hooked. If the bars in Buffalo hadn’t been open until 4:00 (or if they’d only changed the damn drinking age to 21 a few years earlier), I mighta actually made something of my life.
How about that ice cream guy and his stand in your town? They are everywhere–except Federal Way, WA.
Upscale! What am I getting into? No hotdog stands! Oh, that’s right. You yuppies had to petition to get a White Castle joint in your “region”.

Roakes: The ultimate hot dog and milkshake shanty. This spot literally looks like a metallic box, with ceilings so low an NBA off-guard couldn’t fit inside. Cooks seemingly from the “Happy Days” era work busily behind the counter while hunched diners down the “special sauce” Coney Island hot dog. The hamburgers are just as tasty, and the thin-cut fries need no added salt.

oh yeah, i was just googling for reviews of the restaurant and that’s the first thing I came up with. Actually Frankie and Johnny’s is interesting for three reasons: it has absolutely huge portions of food, it has a Soprano’s-gang style feel, and NY Mets and Yankees regularly hang out there.

uh god….So I actually slept late for one day in my life and stumbled down to feed the animals…turned on MSNBC to see, for some reason, Meet The Press, but I guess it was on the news …and there was o less than Newt Gingrich going off on the administration and Bush (which Timmeuh had to confirm…”youre saying that the president….youre saying that our diplomacy…”)
and then he starts to go on very seriously that this is world war 3 and that if anyone just looks at a map and makes the connections, that its clear that we are looking at the beginning of WW3…..
and hes basically blamin US!!….Its on again at 10PM, but also will likely be on crooks and liars, so I have to find it to confirm that I heard what I think I heard, but man…not good to wake up to someone like that sayg something like that.
Now McLaughlin…who I like more and more as time goes on (as these things go)
…oh, and Novak managing to transfer blame and then go on abotu how he made the judgement himself that she wasnt undercover…he really doesnt think that she was outed because it appears that aldrich ames outed her already so it was “unlikely” that the CIA would ever send her anywhere again….so he decided it was OK and he can sleep at night….
when hes just checking with Rove and there is no mention of editors or a larger entity…and the reporter himself is an arm of the power structure of a government like this….and he seems to make the decisions…and Fitzgerald isnt after him…is after who his 3rd unnamed person is….
I hope that some of this can ocme out in the Plame-wilson case to at least shake it around a bit…
Hopefully the lawsuit will make it to the discovery phase. There’s some doubt if it will get that far. Of course, then the adminstration would classify it or claim executive privilege, so it would be interesting to see where that would go. Of course, by the time it gets to the point, they will probably be out of office, assuming martial law has been declared and elections suspended.
Carrot top used ot be a prop comedian…and Marc says that he now has turned into a Joe Piscapo steroid head…that its scary what hes done to himself
Did you hear that show?
I always thought that he was horrible anyway…good for a children’s party….accidentally got on TV…but no Andy Kaufmann
Is it a sign that the end times are upon us when Newt Gingrich sounds more like a Democrat than the former Democratic candidate for Vice President? Sadly, we may never know, now that Cardinal Milfington has been silenced.
you know, Im to the point here where IM just happy to have things on the record somewhere so that someone can write a book later on…
Brewign Middle east….liek I love Lucky baking bread….
Mom is on the IM hysterical about our people over there
….how europe went over and swept all of their people out of the war zone…and we’ve done nothing
and now another Katrina is coming??
I slept late so I missed everything but man, Ive got a bit to say about this…and its not about who is right or wrong either, unless we’re talking about America…
ufattah mantattah….I may have to start at the beginning and listen to the whole of MS from the get-go
If I can publish my website to the remote server today, maybe Ill get into posting some audio too
I wanted also a set of Jim’s songs from TMMS
I don’t think getting all buff lends itself to being funny. How many of the greatest comedians are beefcakes, you know? Seems to me comedians are funnier when they are more human and embody our worst insecurities.
Hey Brill at Break, if youre around, though I believe that I slept through breakfast…thanks for linking to ripcoco…I need links…though I always wonder if anyone is really reading or just sorta looks at it and says ‘oh, this is too long’…
PJ- I learned something yesterday….if you have built a webpage in Frontpage, you can just scrap front page and open it in Dreamweaver with no problem. You have to change your remote settings, but Dreamweaver will take the pages and convert whatever is messed up to their format!
So Im on a learning curve now, but I may be actually able to get something up and then get my ripcoco separate from himanbrown going….you never know…
slow but sure
well, carrot’s whole thing was that he was a stringy young guy with that red hair…and a suitcase of props…the workout thing is just an addiction (I know cuz I have it…though revocering because all my joints are failing and Ive injured myself)
But when I look at those guys at the gym…the muscle heads is what we call them from the pilates world…they have body dysmorphic disorder as much as any young anorexic girl…and they are not as strong as us. My friend, who is also the trainer in the pilates area for the whole area, loves to get them into class and onto the reformer machine and show them what they cant do….
Yeah, I think Dreamweaver will import FrontPage these days. I’ve been using DW at the Smithsonian, though all I use is the HTML editor, because I really don’t go for all that other shit.
Ha- Mom gave up….
Her best friend from college is an old commie who is pro palestinian…and I believe that Mom is sorta pro Israel…so she wants to talk fault and all…
I dont want to talk fault in that fight because it gets nowhere…I think that we have to talk diplomacy and where we have failed as the most powerful nation in the world, at our supposed mission of bringing peace and help to the world….we have done nothing in a diplmatic way in year and now it may be too late. I dont think that Jimmy cARTER can mop this one up.
Yeah, I just had a bit of an Earlfest this morning, and now I feel able togo out and face the day, which is going to amount to going to some sort of store and buying some ant buttons and bug killer, to deal with a recent infestation of flying, buzzing things here. I’m thinking of seeing if we can’t market a new brand of insecticide. “Jim Earl’s Buzzkill.”
well, as Ive been playing more and more with html…and I took a class in it a long time ago at UConn, so I remember it…its sorta handy that they make Dreamweaver so accessible to html people…in that there are handy dictionaries and click menus of the code, as oppsoed to the tedious writing of it….so you dont have to do a wysiwyg thing…but you can easily write the code and look at it quick…
Of course, I was only just starting to look at building from scratch…the template at blogger has been incredibly helpful in that I know it well and its a good basic layout.
I cant get my side bar to stay up top in IE though…its fine in firefox but according to statcounter, most people use IE…and I keep making the setting slimmer and slimmer but its probably a picture somewhere in the archives.
This is a big problem at blogger…
Fault is a wondeful sort of academic discussion that solves nothing. First thing is to get everybody to stop killing each other. The US and the rest of the world needs to get off the fucking oil standard, so that we don’t have to support repressive governments in order to keep our hands in the region.
โJim Earlโs Buzzkill.โ
:rofl2::rofl2:
I think we have a new career for Jim!
OK, while we’re talking food, here’s a little tip for y’all: If you’re ever up in the Albany, NY area, you have GOT to go to Ted’s Fish Fry, 636 New Loudon Rd, Latham, NY. The place dishes up really fresh, crisp, not-out-of-the fryer fish, clams, scallops or shrimp. The “fish fry” from which the place gets its name is a long strip of fish (haddock?) served hot and crunchy on a hotdog roll with either tartar sauce or something they call “red sauce.” They have good fries too and really excellent coleslaw. I could probably eat a half-dozen of those fish frys (without the bread) without batting an eye.
And if you want something a bit more exotic, there’s an excellent Indian restaurant just two doors down.
The two places are separated by a healthfood store, which says something, but I’m not sure what.
Well, Macromedia (which has since been bought out by Adobe) bought out HomeSite, and incorporated it into Dreamwever. Except I much prefer HomeSite (Adobe has seen fit to fuck with it). For stylesheets, TopStyle (written by the guy who wrote HomeSite, now bought out by Gator) is great, and integrates with HomeSite. There are a bunch of good freeware html editors out there, though.
Wandering in with no particular thing to say…
Yesterday, while enjoying the wildlife (I hate mice. I hate slugs. I’m not particularly fond of snails. But wildlife is to be ENJOYED!) my friend Amy and I decided not to solve all the world’s problems. We just solved the Mideast’s problems.
A mad genius scientist must invent a biodome type shield that will totally enclose the region. We then will wait ten years and deal with whoever is still there when we lift the biodome. It’s the only sensible solution. Both sides have valid reasons to e fighting and both sides are BUTTHOLES for fighting. So I think the only solution is to keep the rest of the world save while they work it out together.
YMMV. But I think it’ll work.
And now I’m off for MORE Sunday morning coffee, breakfast, and a nap before heading out to Mike and Liv’s wedding. I’d like to request a wake up call noon, please, so I can take a shower first.
I got this whole suite from Will’s ID Tech camp last year when he took a webpage class…so I have flash, firecracker and a couple of other things…but it doesnt seem to be all that new. I guess that if I really love it Ill buy the new one…but this is worlds better than front page…which I just had because I took a class at UConn to graduate in which this was the program…again offered dirt cheap in the bookstore….
I still havent figured out the adobe elements, but I use it and just sort of feel my way around…I have to do some tutorials…and I want a really good movie editor…
I guess Adobe will have everything sewed up soon…maybe just sell to google to make things simpler…
I can’t get Cnick’s podcaste of the show to play. Something is not letting the add on be installed. I’ve gotten his podcastes to work before. ๐
Brilliant, thanks for making me homesick! Okay, not totally but some. I was raised in Albany, NY and while the restaurant you mention surely post-dates me it makes me long for a trip back there.
Oh Brill, if you get up to the Cape at all, go to Wellfleet pier and Macs seafood. Its a sit outside, order at the window sort of place, but is fantastic and even has totally fresh just out of the ocean sushi….its more healthfoody, but has great fried stuff and the steamers are…well, gross, but fantastic….
Krista, Ive got this whole past week that I can give you on aol instant messenger…and now I offer Yahoo messenger, thanks to Kat!….but I hear that I may have edited out a part…? Have to read back and am just gonna go through it to see if I cut something…
oh, now IM sad going through this last show….
was hackett drunk?
Hey PJ, was that you on the phone?
Freeport goldmines….
The problem with your sidebar is that the links under previous posts are all new ul’s, but none of them are closed, so what you have are unordered lists nested inside unordered lists, which keeps pushing each one over. Basically, you have:
ul id=”recently”
ul
li xxx /li
ul
li xxx /li
ul
li xxx /li
(etc)
and then
/ul
Then the archives ones are all ok.
And at the end of the sidebar, you get all the closing ul tags in a row
/ul /ul /ul….
So, there’s something funky in your template that doesn’t add the previous post links properly. Fix that, and you should be good to go.
On the phone? You mean, the incredibly moronic sounding guy named Patrick? Yes, I’m afraid that was me. ๐ณ
You didnt sound moronic at all….you were great. What did you say that was different than what anyone else said including pashman and brendan?….I thought that was you.
Was Lawton on the last show or the second to last show?
Welcome back Gypsy! You won’t be last much longer now.:peace:
Lawton was on the second to last show.
This thing happens all the time…The blogger help boards are full of this. But also if you put too long a link or too big a picture it happens, and if you have the settings on width adjusted wrong it happens….its crazy…
so what you see is only on the current page and not in the archives?
Thank you PJ….Kat was saying that my file was missing it and I was looking for it…will have to check with her when shes on…I have the second to last show,
PJ when I start my liberal internet radio station complete with politics and animals and old time radio shows ๐ will you be the webmaster?
I only need the last show and Tuesdays show. just add a 55 to my handle on yahoo.
No, what I meant is that the links listed under “archives” are all ok – that is, they are like this:
ul
li xxx /li
li xxx /li
li xxx /li
li xxx /li
/ul
So it just seems to be a problem with the way the template constructs the previous posts links.
But, yeah, if you have something too wide that can’t wrap (picture, or a big long string of text w/ no breaking spaces of it – you’ll see that here when people post really long url’s instead of making a text link) you’ll get funky results, too.
Oh god, I just remembered what I wrote about last night…after my wild airplane bottles of flavored vodka buying spree, I managed to drink half an oz of grapefruit Absolute and go into a drunken stupor…or something…
Anyway, Lieberman announces to the local paper (and maybe the times, who knows, havent looked….) that he has a feeling in his gut that Iran is behind this Israel thing…uh-huh….
how does that get on the fornt page? This is a big city right outside of NYC and the more interesting thinkg is that the republican senate hopeful who would run against Liebermont has a scandal about gambling…and so they are considering pressing another little known…locally well known, I guess…repug into service…but they are all up in the air….and very worried with Lamont in the mix.
Then I went off into readng firedoglake, which I love!
Drunk…ha! Half an airplane bottle and I only finished half of the little seltzer drink I made in a batman cup….damn, what has become of me?
Hey, sure, I’ll be the web guy, seeing as Marc doesn’t need my help. ๐
Yeah…I always try to use tinyurl…but even the youtube might be too big…though it works in firefox and Ive adjusted the colums…
This not closing thing happens all the time. Also when you import the embed code for youtube you lose the close embed part and have to do it like 3 times to make it work…
well, this is a part time gig that you can do in your spare time…and we wont out you as a covert agent either!
In the html of the individual posts IMnot even seeing the opening ul and li’s….
should I look at each post or the template for the whole blog?
Yeah, I’m unable to successfully embed u-tube links here, for some reason (though I haven’t really taken the time to look at it). Easier to just highlight the text and make a link.
Marc needs you PJ, he just doent know it yet…Maybe his crowd out there has some good computer people in it, but I dont trust those hollywood types with their fake boobs and spray on tans…
He’ll come crawling back….heh
and anyway, we need you!
You should look at the template. If you want to e-mail the template to me, I’ll take a look at it, and see if I can figger it out. Just copy and paste it into notepad, if you want, and send it to me.
Well, I’m happy to help him, but my feelings aren’t exactly hurt. I have lots of other stuff to kill time with (very hard to work here, anyway, ‘cuz my laptop keyboard is so small, and I’m a shitty typist to begin with).
Yeah, because when I close it on the post it wont accept publishing because it has no opening matching thingy…just wanted ot make sure I wanst missing it.
Yes…I will mail to you and if you can fix it, go ahead and Ill transfer it.
Why does this program do this, and why cant they fix it?…true, the last time they tried some fixes they were down for like 24 hours when things got out of hand…
THEY need you too!!
PJ- you need to treat yourself to a full sized keyboard to plug into your laptop…how bout a nice big wirelesss one? You can carry it around in a backpack if thats a concern, but arent you just using the laptop for the dorm, more or less?
It’s the Minima Black template. You’ll have to ask Douglas Bowman what the problem is. But, he did it in feb 2004, so maybe blogger changed something.
people have this problem with all sorts or templates….its not the templates, its something in blogger that takes the closing code and puts it all on the botton of the page regardless or…whatever….
see what you can see. Ive been studying this thing for months and reading the help boards and….finally Ive decided ot only look at it in firefox…but it does lose something for the IE folks,..and the safari folks for all I know.
Can I open this thing in dreamweaver too?
Lawton was on the second to last show.
MY BAD, MELINA. :spank: SORRY!
====
iran is definitely behind Hezbollah and that this is what it’s about now (besides the containment Israel does with the Palestinians)- iran, which we only strengthened in Iraq is empowered. no one gives a shit about the Palestinians. all the surrounding countries are only concerned with their own power and they all use the Palestinians as a pawn/excuse to solidify their bases (whether israeli or arab).
alan dershowitz is a prick, btw.
pj is 100% right =>
Oh, so I stopped at a rest stop just west of Flagstaff on my way back from Vegas. I decided to take the longer route that included some cool weather. So, I’m resting my eyes a bit in my car and I notice this trucker walking toward the pavilion things. I have my sunglasses on. And he is gawking at me in the car, probably thinking my eyes are closed because i have the seat reclined. I was going to go check out a hole in the fence and what looked to be a giant pit on the other side of it but I didn’t want anyone, especially some trucker gawking at me, to see that I was going into the woods alone. So I was gonna wait til he left. Well, he walked over to some other pavilion in line with my car and sat on a bench and proceeded to stroke his weiner while glancing at me now and then. Fuckin’ CREEP! :fu: So I just left. But then after fuming a bit I started worrying that he was lurking around waiting for an opportunity to maybe hurt someone. So I called the Flagstaff police and reported him. He may have been harmless but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a police officer make an appearance.
Thanks FK…I was going a little crazy because I havent properly listened to either show yet.
I know that Joe likely has a point, but who is he to be strutting round talking to the press as if hes Joementum…and I guess IM so sick of hearing his voice…here in CT, hating Joe has become an art…
And all it serves to do is to rally the people to get ready for WAR, WAR, WAR….WW3, according to Newt!!!!!
and by the way, is Engle gay? There is something about that hair….but maybe not. I suppose it doesnt matter.
You sure that wasnt Seanie????
JOKE!!
Be careful Krista…the roads are full of wackos. Just be glad you dont have my bumper stickers. People follow me to tell me they love them, bbut if I left the east I would probably have to take em off!
The best response to weeinies in public is to laugh hysterically…but be sure your doors are locked and you are driving away at the time!…though Ive done it on the subway. Pointing at it and laughing is even better…just have an escape route and hope they arent packing.
Hey, PJ, I’ve offered web help to Marc too. So far no reply. Bite, hand, feeds, etc. ๐
I agree with you about HomeSite. That’s what we use for Cold Fusion development. If I’m laying out a site that has a lot of tables for layout (I still haven’t gotten things like absolute positioning to work right) I’ll use Dreamweaver to lay out the initial table, but once that’s done it’s all hand-coding with HomeSite.
Ok so Melina- we’ve had a similar morning.
Newt is terrorizing me right now. I never turn it on but love PJ’s Sunday morning lineup. Count Novak is on now.
I watched Syriana with my neighbor last night… I was kind of lost so will rent it again.
Druid I don’t know much about String Theory but plenty about String Management.
A lot of people pack out here. You do have to kind of be careful about who you provoke. Besides, I didn’t want him to know I noticed him,I wanted the cop to get there. I had a really good description of him. Good thing I already met Sean in person so I know what he looks like! ๐
I try not to use tables at all anymore, though I sometimes cheat and use them as a crutch.
If I was gonna use the laptop forever as a workstation, then I’d get a keyboard for it, but I don’t use it for much serious work. I’ll be back at my fullsize keyboard soon, hopefully.
pj is 100% right =>
The US and the rest of the world needs to get off the fucking oil standard, so that we donโt have to support repressive governments in order to keep our hands in the region.

Crazy equifax credit card companies on phone and dogs trying to “play with” birds….
Did you say CRUTCH???
yeah, ‘cuz i’m more used to using tables for page layout, and while stylesheets are much more elegant to use, it takes a bunch-o-thinkin’ to use ’em effectively. And that thinkin’ shit aint easy.
Well, I reckon I better go out and get me a can of Buzzkill.
Kristapea
Are you on a Mac?
I subscribed to Cnickthomas podcast through iTunes and under the Advanced menu pasted the URL into Subcribe to Podcast.
Be careful out there.
Now I know for sure why I almost never stop at rest stops and I am on the road alot!
Oh yeah itunes, I’ll try that. Thanks blufox.
You just have to be aware of your surroundings at rest stops. And a little bit of paranoia helps too!:paranoid:
I’m on a pc
Althopugh I try not to stop at them at night. You know you’re trapped in those bathrooms, only one way out.
I swear, you can’t make this stuff up.
Did you know that there is a Maronite Church?
The church is named after St. Maroun (yes really):
Sounds about right to me. :priest::rabbi::bow::lol:
I remember a 60 minutes expose some 15 years ago about all the sex going on at rest stops by “not gay” men with wives at home.
Well that went into the paranoia bank big time.
I use the “pay” toilets at restaurants an such. I do avoid Macdonald’s or don’t “pay” there.
Time for PJ to post the Maronite picture for Jill:banana:
well, a can of pepper spray is also in order, and maybe a blackjack or some such. I keep a baseball bat by my bed for such emergencies, but I figure if anyone is gonna make it past the dogs and the alarm they are pretty resilient….
PJ- I meant crutch as in…crutches swirl in my nighmares at night round here!….no judgement in the web area….I cant even figure out blogger, fer chrissakes!
Hey, what’s goin’ down, peeps?
Wow, Krista, that sounded scary… I definitely think you did the right thing by calling the police there. I’m really glad he didn’t approach you.
Too anyone – Reading all these posts in the last couple of hours…can someone tell me how to make “tiny url?” I always see it but have not figured out how to do it (Have a rudamentary knowledge of HTML, so go ahead, explain, I can deal with it…thanks all…
hey Travis
go to google and search for the tiny url website. There, that’s about it, I think.
Hey, Susan
Hey, Travis. How is your stay in the lower 48 going? Did you get to listen to the last TMMS!
It’s pretty nice here in Seattle today. Um, in about a week or so I think I’ll be going to Spokane or something. Um, what else…Oh, yeah. Nope, wasn’t able to hear the last Marc Maron show.:knit2:
oh, I see…they shorten it for you at the website. Thanx Travis!

go here, Susan.
Travis where are you blogging from?
Uh, I’m at the library. where are you at?
Fremont
35 AVE NE and something:doh: I think
Hey Susan.
I use a different but similar URL squeezer:
http://compacturl.com/cgi-bin/compact
it’s fast and the links seem to live forever.
Where’s Fremont?
Hi Travis!!! Are you having fun?
Let me me know if you want the shows…we can get them to you…if you have any mailing address I can send you a CD of the last week if youd like.
Did you check your gmail yet?
Hey Susan,

http://compacturl.com/cgi-bin/compact
It’s fats and the links last “forever.”

I keep a link on my toolbar so I can go there easily.
It is in Seattle- You would go to the Udistrict where I could meet you at the Allegro and burn you a CD of the show if you want.
I have to be somewhere at 5pm
Third try:
Hey Susan, I use this ine:
It’s fast and the links seem to last forever.
PJ- thanks so much for the template…I will try it later on…there is no hot water due to power outtage the other day, and the burner guy is coming…I also have to go on bird visitation and to market…
Its really hot here…95-ish?…and tomorrow they are saying that with the heat indexit will feel like 110. The thing is that its really humid, so its just debilitating…especially in casts…
Poor Will has hardly left the house.
Allegro is at 42nd and between University way and 15th NE
Fremont is just the next district over. There is a weekly craft fair and a statue of lenin here
Cool, thanks, Melina.
Uh, how about Magnuson park? I have the Miata for a little while.
oh, so nice sblue….
Or allegro. That’s cool.
thanks. I was getting tired of sending out those long strings of web address
I’m not really sure how to get to Allegro though:smack:
Lets do the Allegro-
I am having a rare lazy Sunday- I usually try to get there much earlier so all my pals are gone by now I’m sure.
I am 50 red-hair yeah old enough to be your mum so don’t worry.
I think I will recognize you from your picture.
I can bring an old ipod and we can maybe load it up for you.
Is there a map somewhere online?
…I think I’m deceased.
I’m logged in, but when I post, nothing appears! # times.
So I’ve chenged my password, logged out, logged back in.
If this doesn’t work I’ll try sliding a penny up the wall and see if anyone notices….
Hey Susan, I use a different site:
It’s small, fast and the links seem to last forever…unlike me, it would seem.
(s.) Dead Zeb
Follow the street that the library is on all the way down to the U village.
The stay right- all the way up the bridge and then stay left and turn left at 15th NE and then go one block past the U bookstore parking lot.
Allegro is to the south just off the parking lot that is near the big church.
you stiilll there I am a slow typer
Yeah, I’ll try and get there. How ’bout in a hour or so. Cool?

I am just trying to coruupt him with Apple stuff:hubba:
OK-off to the bird store!!
Well, I have to save the 20 minutes that I have left on the library computer, incase something happens and i need more directions or something. So, i’ll try and navigate over to the cafe.
See ya’ll in about an hour!
The Question of Palestine
by Edward Said
This original and deeply provocative book was the first to make Palestine the subject of a serious debate – one that is now more critical than ever. With the rigorous scholarship that he brought to his influential Orientalism and an exile’s passion (he is Palestinian by birth and has been a member of the Palestinian National Council), Edward Said traces the fatal collision between two peoples in the Middle East and its repercussions in the lives of both the occupier and the occupied – as well as in the conscience of the West. He has now updated this landmark work to portray the changed status of Palestine and its people in light of such developments as the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the intifada, the Gulf war, and the ongoing Middle East peace initiative.
For anyone interested in this region and its future, The Question of Palestine remains the most useful and authoritative account available.
About the Author
Edward Said, who has died last year at age 67, was a widely respected writer, scholar, and activist. Dr. Said was a professor of literature at Columbia University, and his book Orientalism revolutionized the literary field. He was one of the leading literary critics of the last quarter of the 20th century, and he was widely regarded as the outstanding representative of the post-structuralist left in America. Above all, he was the most articulate and visible advocate of the Palestinian cause in the United States.
Cool.

ย I was a Zionist youth leader, and I was opposed to a Jewish state…
Itโs been obvious for 35 years what a just peace is. In fact, itโs pretty much what Sadat offered Israel in 1971. It was a full peace treaty in return for Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories. I donโt think Sadat cared much about the West Bank. He meant withdrawal from Sinai, where Israel was then expanded though North Eastern Sinai. Well, thatโs when Israel rejected the offer, and the US decided to back Israel. And since then there has been no possibility of a just peace.
ย By the mid-1970s the Palestinian issue had made the international agenda, prior to that it wasnโt, so Sadat said nothing about the Palestinians in his peace offer just as UN [Resolution] 242 says nothing. By the mid-1970s Palestinian nationalism began to be recognized. In January 1976 Syria, with the support of Egypt and Jordan and the other states, put forth a resolution in the UN Security Council, calling for a peace, in accord with UN 242, the main diplomatic document, but different in that there would be a Palestinian state in the areas that Israel occupied. Go back to UN 242 borders but with the Palestine State, maybe minor, mutual adjustments to the borders, which was the original intent of 242.
Well the US vetoed it. When the US vetoes something, itโs a double veto…

The Israel-Arafat Agreement
Noam Chomsky
Z Magazine, October, 1993
On August 30, the Israeli Cabinet approved a draft agreement on “Palestinian self-rule” that had been reached by the government of Israel and PLO chairman Yasser Arafat’s personal representatives. Parts of the agreement have not been revealed or are not yet settled at the time of writing (September 2), but it is likely that something much like the published text (NYT, Sept. 1) will be instituted, and that it will be followed by separate agreements between Israel and Arab states.
To understand what has been achieved, it is necessary to recall the relevant background, much of it familiar to readers of this journal, at least.
The June 1967 war brought the superpowers perilously close to confrontation, driving home the importance of a diplomatic settlement. In November 1967, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 242, which expressed a broad international consensus on the general terms for a settlement. The current agreement is based entirely on UN 242 (and 338, which endorses it). Article I of the 1993 draft agreement, outlining the “Aim of the Negotiations,” specifies that “the negotiations on the permanent status will lead to the implementation of Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338”; no other UN Resolutions are mentioned, thus resolving a central issue in the controversy in accord with US-Israeli demands.
UN 242 “emphasiz[es] the inadmissibility of acquisition of territory by war and the need to work for a just and lasting peace in which every state in the area can live in security.” It calls for “Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict” and “Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every state in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.” It calls for an agreement among states; Palestinian rights are mentioned only in the call for “a just settlement of the refugee problem,” left unspecified. UN 242 is therefore thoroughly rejectionist, if we understand the concept of rejectionism in nonracist terms: as denial of the right to national self-determination of one or the other of the two contending parties in the former Palestine. . .
Nicki, resend that Chomsky link…
XM is US based. If Marc goes that way, I’ll be out of the loop without a podcast.
No.. People will go out into the streets. Recall WTO Seattle in 1999. It is because we have no opposition party in the United State.
UN 242 is therefore thoroughly rejectionist, if we understand the concept of rejectionism in nonracist terms: as denial of the right to national self-determination of one or the other of the two contending parties in the former Palestine. . .
That’s the part a lot of people don’t get about all this, I think. Thanks for spelling it out.
I can’t get the Chomsky link from the blog either. I got it from google.
It’s partially what you say about there being no opposing party. People ARE worked up to a point. I still think there’s a tipping point that the Mexicans reached that we didn’t reach yet. Maybe I’m wrong, though
No. Chomsky is only pointing out that the strict interpretation of 242 leaves the Palestinians out. It does not mention their right to national self-determination. However, it does not allow Israel to annex the territory they seized in the June 1967 war. It calls for the end of fighting, and the withdrawal of all armies from occuppied territories. Israel is to move out of Sinai, Gaza, West Bank, and the Golan Heights. Perhaps there can be minor border adjustments. A comprehensive peace treaty under UN auspices is to be worked out.
SYRIAN MILITARY MOBILIZING RESERVE DIVISIONS; IDF INFANTRY MOBILIZED
IDF infantry division mobilized to north
http://www.jpost.com
The IDF on Sunday mobilized a reserve infantry division in preparation for a possible ground incursion into south Lebanon, The Jerusalem Post has learned. The move was intended as the beginning of a new effort to push Katyusha rocket launching cells away from the Israel-Lebanon border.
The division was setting up command posts along the northern border, while tanks and armored personnel carriers were being transported northward.
…
Meanwhile, Al-Arabiya television reported that the Syrian military was mobilizing its own reserve divisions.
Syria vows to respond directly to any Israel strike
DAMASCUS (AFP)
Syria has warned it would respond directly and by all means necessary to any Israeli attack on its territory, in its first official reaction to
Israel’s offensive on neighboring Lebanon.
The warning coincided Sunday with a similar threat by Damascus’s key ally
Iran, and came amid rising fears that the Middle East is being dragged deeper into the spiraling conflict sparked by the capture of Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon and militants linked to Hamas in Gaza.
“Any Israeli attack against Syria will provoke an unlimited, direct and firm response using all means necessary,” Information Minister Mohsen Bilal told the official SANA news agency.

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so.
Gingrich said in an interview Saturday that Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president.
“We need to have the militancy that says ‘We’re not going to lose a city, ” Gingrich said.
Gingrich said in the coming days he plans to speak out publicly and to the administration from his seat on the Defense Policy Board about the need to recognize that America is in World War III.

You sound like someone who is not an activist. How many were picked off in Seattle? Mass murder in NYC during the Republican Convention protests! Yeah. We have to stay hunkered down in our holes, lest the stormtroopers round us all up.
Knock on the door. Uh oh. They are here to get me…..Gestapo Deathe Squad Black fist of death….
:omg:
When all the members of the leftist media are peace at any cost nicks or want to make the problems subordinate to sports and tell you any uprising would be suppressed by tanks.. nothing.. absolutely nothing will happen on a national scale.. That’s why i think they are just put here to make people paranoid and to lull the left to sleep until it is to late.:gate::omg::jason::fist:
I don’t think we should wait for a leader. If a leader emerges from this (ie a Cindy Sheehan) power to her or him, but we should not wait.
For those who use FireFox, you can dwonload the TinyURL creator extension, and then when you right-click on any page you’re on, you will get an option to create a TinyURL for that page, which will get copied to your clipboard. Quite handy.
thanks, PJ. I will do that.
Localized protests are not going to cut it.. A million or more people have to be willing to spend a week or a month in DC and rattle the cages of all the politicians. I don’t even know the name of whoever it was that lead the WTO demonstration or who other than the national UPJ organization did the demo in NYC. The demonstrations lasted ten hours and that was that. The people organizing the Denver contingent of the UPJ march at the rethug convention got visited by the FBI in the weeks leading up to the demonstration.. that was apparently pretty common in big cities all over the country. They knew that if anything got broken they would go by by.
Are you fooled by the media? How did you wrest your thinking from the propaganda sluice?
Fuck the FBI..
Diane Feinstein! What a mindless zionist bitch!
To get people into the streets (more than a few people, and more than just on a Saturday afternoon), you need to get the people to give a shit about what it is they ought to get out into the streets for. This would, I think, require some sort of media outlet to educate the people and spread the word. It also has to be a medium that people can easily get, and are willing to pay attention to. The information is certainly out there if you are ready, willing, and able to go out and get it, but most people are just trying to get by in life, and do their thing. If it aint on the teevee, they aint gonna get it. Worse, if what is on the teevee is corporatist propaganda, then they not only won’t get the truth, but they will be pre-conditioned to not believe – even scorn – the truth, should they accidentally hear it.
Oh, and leaders – or at least organizers – would be nice, too.
I’m here! Where’s Travis… here comes a guy in a suit… oh no!!!:omg:
Israel needs to withdraw from the territories they are illegally annexing. Then we can talk about rocket attacks.
People are not doing that now?
Shit the bi cycle cops are riding by now:omg:
If we wait for the media, we might as well not do anything. The media is not progressive-friendly, but we need to carry on anyway. Protests have to be done. Enough people and they will make waves. WE should still work on taking the media back, via contacting advertisers and media outlets, but we need the people in the streets as well. Personally I think the tide has turned recently and people are angry enough to make a real show of it out in the streets, and the side of the media that latches onto sensationalism will pick it up. It’s a different atmosphere these days than in the days of the Republican convention (which the media buried). Things are worse and people are angrier. I say the time is now. We need to act.
It’s also gonna be tough for those of us with our righteous indignation and computers, Internet access, cable or satellite TV, and relatively nice lifestyles to convince those members of society who are barely scraping by that they ought to listen to us, since we, no doubt, appear about as much on their side as do the wealthy corporate whoredogs.
People are not organizing now?
So true …
here comes travis
It’s not a matter of waiting for the media, so much as it is a matter of being the media. And doing as much as possible to compel the mainstream media to do their jobs. And doing away with news for profit, which is, IMHO, the biggest problem with the media (as well as scrapping the fairness doctrine).
And do something about the “opposition” party.
…like support third party politics instead of just voting for dems even when they suck
Yes, people are oranizing now. And god bless the 17 people that are willing to hang out in front of the White House, and Code Pink, and anybody else. But the majority – I would dare to say the overwhelming majority – of “we the people” are either unaware, or don’t care, or don’t trust anybody’s motivation. That’s what needs to change.
That doesn’t mean good things aren’t being done, or that people should quit trying, but I don’t see any quick turnaround.
Yes, what needs to happen is that a third party needs to capture the local governments. Take over the government from the ground up.
Then line up and collectively jump off of the cliff. It is hopeless.
What’s hopeless? Did I imply that anything was hopeless?
Or am I being too fucking analytical?
The too analytical crack yesterday was intended as a joke. But the prospects for mass change are here. People resent these massive cuts in social welfare that began with Reagan. Tired of wars. We need to organize more. But the people are ready to be organized.
Like PJ said you have to have an organization on the national level to spread the news, organize the meetings, watch your back.. The number of people listening to AAR is probably a tenth if that of those listening to the M$M on a daily basis and that’s s probably only 8 million or so.. So what does 800,000 people spread all over the country do ?? In a typical uprising only 5 – 10 percent of the populous has ever been involved and I doubt that even 28 million spread out all over the country would look like much of an opposition force to those in DC. Rethugs are known to be followers..and their leaders are numbered only in the several thousands. Their primary source of financing is from some relative small number (less than 2000) of the elite.
PJ, you only have two more Sunday’s after today. Rejoice :nixon:
Admit it, you are going to miss DC :rofl2:
Why don’t you ask Russia and China to send in their support?
Probably not Russia and China they are becomeing corportocracies too. but maybe Venezuela , Brazil, Chili.. To keep a few hundred thousand people in business. the cost to Chavez would be almost trivial.
AN “ANTI-RATIONALITY” trend is sweeping our society. It’s hard to specify its scope or breadth but it seems most pronounced in parts of the left. Consider the following experiences:
At a talk to a group of activists and academics about eight months ago in Amherst, MA, a speaker is repeatedly called “too logical.” He is told that he offers too much evidence, hypothesis, and argument, and too few emotive descriptions. His “scientific style” renders his words worthless. A priori, his ideas are dismissed.
A few weeks later an a Midwestern anarchist editorial advises activists to henceforth doubt the writings of a heretofore highly respected commentator. The fellow is too in thrall to “Western Technology.” He accepts too many of technologies offerings and by this allegiance, his utterances are made suspect.
More recently, a New York leftist attends a conference where she is criticized by a number of people for being “too forthright” in openly expressing strong disagreement with a presentation. When she replies that forthrightness is honest, and therefore good, she is told that forthrightness is “too fractious.” Whenever necessary, she should henceforth “reinterpret the words of others to make them more acceptable to her own views.” This will prevent sharp disagreement and “show real respect.”
Next, an exchange occurs in Chicago because someone asserts that some claim (I don’t remember what) about our culture is true. She is told by another activist that there is no such thing as truth–neither that claim nor any other. It is better to discuss competing interpretations, possibilities, or stories than truth. Truth is too final, too closed, too imperial. There is no one truth, no one angle for knowing, and therefore no single right answers.
Finally, we have the recent national arguments about JFK and Vietnam. First, a view is posited: JFK wanted to end the war and was killed for it. Then, when some data can be “reinterpreted,” or “massaged,” or manufactureded to fit that view, it’s done, On the other hand, when all other evidence contradicts the preferred view, no problem, it’s ignored.
I could go on, not only with specific instances such as these, but also with broader trends including aspects of the rise of conspiracy theorizing, especially on the West Coast, and, of course, the miasma of post modernist theory throughout academia. The point isn’t that all these phenomena are identical. They aren’t. Nor is the point that they all embody disagreements or a diminution of good sense. That’s nothing new. The point is that all these examples are part of an anti-rational trend elevating anti-rationality to a virtue and demoting rationality to a sin.
When I first encountered this trend, it seemed to be just one more arcane, academic fad that would quickly fad away. Now, however, seeing how many tributaries feed “anti-rationalism,” I worry that my earlier optimistic reaction may have been wishful thinking. What valid insights fuel anti-rationalism? Is it sensible? What effects is it likely to have? What’s the antidote?
MICHAEL ALBERT
1992
Calling someone “too analytical” would put me in the Anti-Rationality group that Albert is exploding here.
What valid insights fuel anti-rationalism? Is it sensible? What effects is it likely to have? Whatโs the antidote?
Anti rationality is always accelerated at times right-wing governments hold sway over the masses. This is because they know how to use propaganda to feed into the latent wish of most people to stop thinking (because thinking will not allow them to channel their anger onto other people) and the right want to use this to further their own cause. They don’t want rationality, they want raw emotion, because they know how to use that. Lately I see people on the left buying into the anti-rationality thing also. I have ideas why, I’ll have to elaborate in another post.
Michael Albert was discussing the Postmodernism trend that was big among the left in the 1990s. This authoritarian mind stuff that John Dean’s new book goes into is a little different. As you know, Dean’s groupings support the neocons and their allies.
When it comes to politics at least, there’s no such thing as being “too analytical.” This is a lie created, probably by the right. The opposite of logic, emotion, is what enables right wing goverments (probably any government!) to be in power, beause masses of people are swayed by emotion, not logi. It’s in their best interest to keep us from thinking. The bst thing to do is expose this lie. Anti rationality was used in Nazi Germany also.
Organized labor is where it’s at in my opinion. If you’re a white guy and you’re in a union, you make a little more money. If you’re a woman or a minority, you make significantly more. There are problems with unions, to be sure, but I think that’s the best way to reach all the people, and the way to stop commerce and get these bastids’ attention. And no coincidence that our only president to be in a union, I’m sorry to say, spent his whole life trying to crush labor, from the NFWA and the lettuce boycott on. It’s time that “union” stopped being a dirty word.
That the right is against postmodernism is no surprise. That’s something they’ve had a lot of success fighting. But they misrepresent it.
Unions are what take, even now, significant numbers of the population out of the category of working poor and into the middle class. Anyone who has worked with a union knows the difference. how anyone who is not wealthy could be anti union baffles me
Reagan was the president of a big union. Yeah. He was a real opportunistic fascist fuck.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e88/travisdem_04/IMG_1677.jpg
can’t turn the clock back to 1980 and vote him out…that would be nice, though
The railroad unions effectively shut down deliveries of coal and other raw materials durning the RayGun administration.. he ordered the army in to put them back to work after they refused to honor the Taft Hartley act. They could have just walked off the job, went home to eventually live under a Bridge but they choose to go back to work instead. With their knowledge of railroad operations they could have effectively done some significant property damage that would have put the RayGun admin out of business..
Union ,leaders were arrested and imprisoned as I remember.. their union members gave new meaning to the word sheeple.
You mean Truman. Reagan killed the Air Traffic Control Union.
Big Railroad strike in 1877, too.
Reagan fired more than 11,000 air-traffic controllers in 1981 for staging an illegal strike. The move was a major blow to the power of labor unions.
Ron Taylor was fired by President Reagan 23 years ago. He’s still trying to get his job back.
Taylor, 57, of Stuart, Fla., was one of more than 11,000 air-traffic controllers fired by Reagan after they went on strike for higher wages and fewer hours on the stress-filled job. In 1993, President Clinton ended the “ban for life” Reagan had imposed on former members of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Association, but Taylor and thousands of others weren’t rehired.
“When they talk about Reagan as compassionate, I just don’t know what they are talking about,” says Taylor, president of PATCO, which continues legal action to get members’ jobs back.
“Reagan banned us for life,” Taylor says. “Even murderers are eligible for parole. We thought we, as labor, had a friend in the White House.”

PJ, are you going to get a chance to go to the Capitol and tour the White House and do some more touristy stuff before you leave?
Also, I was glad to find out who Lt. Ronnie Rudloph was from TMMS. It’s Wyatt Cenac. I thought he was laugh out loud funny.
RayGun effectively neutered the entire union movement .. he allowed the United Steel workers to be demonized by big steel so they could say foreign competition forced them out of business , He fired the federalized air traffic controllers, He broke strikes by the railroad unions and the United mine workers and others by the use of federal troops and the imprisonment of union officials.. The union membership was brainwashed by the media and just buckled under because of the possibility of losing their jobs entirely.
You are getting rather postmodern, there, Fred.
Actually, postmodernism had its applications: the arts, mostly. Architecture, literature. I am not a philosopher of science, but I know that people do science without giving much thought about theories or philosophies of scientific thought.
The ATC shit was bad, and it set the stage for the crushing of the Greyhound strike. The contract they were forced to take, including the continued employment of the scab drivers, was what really devastated labor, IMHO.ย Well, that and loading the NLRB with fiercely anti-union scum.
Travis and I are skulking around the U district trying to find a good signal. We are speechless. Anyway, it is good to get together and talk.:knit::knit2:
The loss of union political contributions was what started the DLC who’s mission was to try to attract Corporate money to the democrats. Now they are going after white collar non union jobs and union jobs.. The sheeple are again brainwashed by the media to believe that the WTO and NAFTA are going to eventually be good for America.. When they wake up in utter poverty they will have no economic power to stop the fascist state.

Well, I’ve been to every Smithsonian museum so far (except the American Indian museum which is on my list). I probably won’t go inside the White House or the Capitol. I’ll try and get to the National Archives, I think. They just reopnend the National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum, which is right across the street from where I work. It’s in the second oldest building in DC (after the White House), and is where Abe Lincoln had his innagural ball. Great old stone building with columns. They did a great job on the inside – this place was on the verge of becoming a parking garage, but they managed to scrape up $600 million to rehab it.
Sorry to interrupt this discussion but we are having a good time here in Seattle but wherever we find a signal there is no electricity.:-(
Too many fucking murders here. Another one early this morning – the 15th in DC since July 1st.
Oh, it’s always about PJ! PJ this and PJ that… – Travisdem_04:rofl2:
The railroad unions, the auto workers and the Airline Pilots Association are the only large national organizations.. The UAW is now going to be castrated and the BLE ( Brother hood of Locomotive Engineers and the UTW ( United Transportation Workers ) are being outflanked by short line non union operators that run non union shops that haul freight on routes parallel to the big four railroads. A national strike by those two unions would just result in the existing non union short line employees taking over the operation of the big railroads.
Greetings All
GREAT POSTINGS and I only perused.
(I got a confession, I went tearing to turn on SG1 (scifi) and it wasn’t on ๐ but as I got involved with other stuff I saw The beginnings of AirBud. Post-Modernism
Michael Albert
ย
A little over two years ago, preparing to ride from Boston to New York to attend the Socialist Scholars Conference, I asked a scholar friend to explain “post-modernism” in the four to five hours we would spend on the road. He accepted, and we rodeโhe lecturing and me listening.
When we got to New York if someone had walked up and asked, “What is post-modernism?” I could not have answered. Four hours and I still didn’t know what “post-modernism” referred to. Three interpretations spring to mind.
* My tutor was an idiot incapable of explaining one concept in four hours.
* I am an idiot incapable of understanding one concept in four hours.
* The concept is idiotic, a vague pastiche of mush covering a range too broad to clarify in four hours.
The third possibility, as you might guess, is my favorite. But how could a concept which engenders shelves of books be nearly empty? Here’s my hypothesis: Literary theory is largely a sham literary theorists use to cajole regal treatment from their professional cohorts, bosses, students, and broader intellectual community.
How can I commit such blasphemy?
First, calling an academic discipline phony is often common sense, not blasphemy.
Take mainstream economics. Nearly the entire “neoclassical” economic edifice is constructed to legitimate the rewards of economists by pleasing the corporate piper who pays the bills. Thus, mainstream economists mainly “prove” capitalism’s worth or indicate how capitalists can better pursue their own ends and rarely try to understand how the system works, who benefits, who loses, and why.
Or take academic political science. Again, the idea is not actually to understand the governmentโwho would pay scholars to do this?โbut to “theorize government” in ways that justify official behavior.
I doubt that Z readers would recoil in horror at these condemnations of mainstream economics and politics. I even think most Z readers would probably find supporting evidence quite convincing. For example, surveys reveal that economics graduate students accept these horrible assertions about their own profession, and the best first-hand documentation of the inner workings of the U.S. government, such as the Pentagon Papers, are exactly the materials that political science departments never bother to study.
But literary theory? Surely this can’t be phony. After all, the most obscure practitioners of literary theory are often radicals and self-serving mystification is never radical…

she’s not the better California senator, I can see that…
Hey, Why don’t you 2 Seattleites walk on over to NE 6th Avenue?
SEIU has about 1.5 million members – about what the UAW had at its peak in 1979, and more than double what the UAW has today. AFSCME has about 1.4 million members (NY’s Civil Service Employees Association, which is part of AFSCME, has about 265,000).
why
Both California Senators take big money from AIPAC. Boxer stood up to the ’04 election theft.
Hey Druid, I watched the season premiere’s of SG-1 and Atlantis on Friday night. Good shows, both (at least if you’re an analytical geek, such as myself).

anyone can understand postmodernism. It’s some kind of willful stupidity how everyone keeps misinterpreteing it.

Post-modernism is a pastiche of mush! Hey. Pastiche works in writing and crerating collages.
pastiche sounds like a dessert… :omg:

So if the SEIU and the UFAW ( I think the United Food and Atomic Workers ) walk off the job what happens?? They are not especially skilled workers easily replaced .
[A]ccording to Jean Baudrillard, is that in postmodern society there are no originals, only copies–or what he calls “simulacra.” You might think, for example, about painting or sculpture, where there is an original work (by Van Gogh, for instance), and there might also be thousands of copies, but the original is the one with the highest value (particularly monetary value). Contrast that with cds or music recordings, where there is no “original,” as in painting–no recording that is hung on a wall, or kept in a vault; rather, there are only copies, by the millions, that are all the same, and all sold for (approximately) the same amount of money. Another version of Baudrillard’s “simulacrum” would be the concept of virtual reality, a reality created by simulation, for which there is no original. This is particularly evident in computer games/simulations–think of Sim City, Sim Ant, etc.
I want to talk about the Megs and the Yanks. You know, those who like to dress down and go slumming in the Bronx for kicks.
What is the whole zipcode?
there’s got to be an original somewhere I tell you! Help!
Haha. 10530-1719 seems to be the whole thing
my girlfriend Meg (we call her Megs) is coming over to stay with me for a few days , that must be why I typed “Megs and Yanks” by accident…
Depends on where they walk to, when they walk. It also depends on who walks with them, when they walk. Used to be a thing called solidarity. It made Lech Walesa a bit of a legend in Poland.
come slumming with me, baby…I want to take you to the streets

Uh oh. I think I pissed her off with that remark.:omg:
We have a lot of murders here too. We have a serial Rapist and a serial Murderer, unrelated, on my side of town. And it’s stumped the police so much that they did a townhall meeting that was carried on local tv to get folks aware of it and to keep an eye out. You know, I wish these people would direct their anger and frustration at the government instead of at the other regular folks.
The Polish coal miners walked out .. in a country that was still in the early 1900’s economically that was a death sentence especially in February… wait… wait the US generates some 70% of its electrical power from burning coal.. but.. 90% of it is mined by non union miners.
Zeb, sorry man, but you got caught in the Spam filter for some reason. I don’t know why, but hopefully that won’t happen anymore.
Love the picture of TRAV and the miata – alaska grown!
sbluefox – where’s the picture of you?
PJ – WE NEED AN AREA FOR ALL THE PHOTOS TO GO!
The solidarity movement was more than the coal miners. But imagine organized labor in this country using its organizing skills and infrastructure to conduct a general strike. It could shit down mass transit, garbage collection, schools, hotels, municpal government, delivery of fuel, food, and other good (in an extreme case, even hospitals, fire departments and the police). Then consider that most union members have families – for every union member that hits the streets, they bring two, three, four family members with them.
It would take something very monumental to get the people out into the streets, but organized labor – even in the reduced numbers there are today – has the infrastructure and the organizing abilities to make it happen. At least, if anybody does.
Ole Zeb in the spam filter? ๐ฏ
hope he gets out and isn’t in there with a bunch of fish!
do you have to sign up to listen to the maron clips or can you just listen?
ray gun totally demonized the unions (agree with fred). Americans are waaay too comfortable to protests…fear of losing that comfort prevents the march.
Well, plus the traditioinal media doesn’t report the things that would get the people riled up enough to demand action. Bush stole the election? No, no. Gore’s a sore loser. And exit polls that are used to test the legitimacy of elections around the world, and are never, never wrong? Oops, guess they were wrong all of a sudden.
KP, you home and ok? Good for you for calling the cops on that guy with the little unit – the pervert. glad you have your doggie. the bad guys don’t like houses with dogs. :paranoid:
the reuthugs WERE mobilized in Florida 2000. I saw them. It was amazing…these little neo-con chicken-hawk white boys in suits were freaking everywhere – like vultures.
Pj, maybe we need the black eagle label of the UFW’s as an emo
But those were paid Republican staffers in 2000, not the people. And of course nobody found that out until way after, and even then it’s almost a secret – in spite of these thugs even putting it on their resumes.

Well, the murder here last night was a 23 year old kid who got stabbed nine times by some woman, apparently over a “freestyling” rap contest. He was a maintenance guy in VA, and a doting father of a 1 yr old son. This was the 15th murder in 15 days here. Last weekend, a British national was stabbed and had his throad slit after four people tried to rape the woman he was with. They have declared a “crime emergency” here, though I think they’re more upset by the spate of armed robberies that have been happening in the National Mall (an area previously “off limits” to crime) This has been very upsetting to the politicians and their staffers, who like to run in the area at night (and is bad for tourism, doncha know).
Then I suppose you’ve heard that a former Bush administration official (William H. Lash III – assistant secretary of commerce until last year), after arguing with his wife, shot and killed his 12-year-old son, and then killed himself. That’ll teach her. That was out in Fairfax County though, so it doesn’t count toward our DC muder toll).
So, anyway, I think I’ll lay low until I can get out of this place.

So PJ, do you believe open or closed or both String Concept? Or…
I just lost a String link oops, so while I get it back I will Q. you more? I did not even see this site, but I think it was the same one you showed re Swartz, yesterday. (A weak joke.) So how long has this concept interested you?
Or are you on “the other side”?
Does anyone have the “Wake” site? I found it earlier, but NOT NOW:omg:
ARREST! IMPEACH! VIGILANCE!
http://freeradiosaic.org/program/shows/35/
THXXXXXX, I didn’t even know of that one, MoonLightMan tea:joe:Cheers
But see this the wake/celebration?
…go to brillianatbreakfast around #395 to post a comment:)
:growl:ARREST! IMPEACH! VIGILANCE!:fist::jason:
Sorry MoonLightMan… it is now the same as what you sent, BUT it was a place to post comments on blogspot, ๐ฎ HONEST :???::roll:(teehee)
I know, i guess its over. I am back and forth so not here all the time
Missed the wake…had to go to a birthday party.
Really fun meeting Travis. Loaded him up with some shows.
It was all a bit of a rush and when we got back to the car it was gone.
I hope it turns up!:fire:
I have not heard ONE GODDAMN democrat call for a cease fire. I am so angry:jason::jason::jason:
I was watching tv today and am completely sickened at the propaganda that they spew. There was an Israeli girl saying she was scared and could not concentrate on her homework….while lebenese children were being blown apart
look at the pics at http://www.nytimes.com . Beirut looks like complete rubble. It is stated that 1/2 a Billion dollars of damage has been inflicted
Perhaps if the Palistinians were given their homeland as promisied by U.N. resolutions that created Israel as well, there would be peace. THAT is NEVER mentioned. It’s as if Israel has the power to veto that unilaterally
Does anyone know how much $$$ it would take to create a web radio station?
๐
Awful pictures Mr.MLMan.
I hear you
:pent::fu:ALL is :evil:bush and his :evil:evil administration fault. We ALL have been proclaiming but, regarding protest I have done as far as one can go in ALL venues. NOW WHAT:?: besides writing:?:
:growl:ARREST! IMPEACH! VIGILANCE!:fist::jason:
I am sorry to say, the rubble is not a surprise…
:-(:growl::fist::jason:
BY THEIR ACTIONS THEY W I L L BE DAMNED:!:
Hi all, how’s it going? PJ, that was one helluva a great blog starter you wrote today. I can’t stomach those Sunday morning shows, and you’re reminding me why. I’ve got too much to do, can’t stay on, but was thinking of you all and just wanted to stop in. Haven’t seen Sean posting, is he ok?
Today was the Labor History Boat Tour around SF-Oakland bays, with lectures by local labor historians. Fantastic.
Tour de France Stage 14 happened today. Anyone else watching the TDF?
[insert bicycle emo here]
This is ALL :evil:bush and his :evil:administration’s fault. IF we had a strong, good LEADER…
Hey ex-nyer.
Glad to see you here and to hear you the other night.:knit:
Everyone that had the courage to call. Thanks again Druid!
I can only hope that Democrats will take the majority in the House and Senate and IMPEACH THE MOTHERFUCKER. It seems that is all we can do. I am sure you all have said this before ….I just have to let it out.:fu::jason::fist:
sbluefox, tea:joe:Cheers. I wanted to talk String Theory stuff, but I can not PLAY now. Hearing again about the bombings and seeing again those type of pictures of the murders, I do not know what else to do except write…but that takes too much time. But rats, what else is there to do?oh well.:-(
moonlightman, Welcome aboard, you are at home THX to PJSAUTER:wink:
Let’s “Play a Game”…Regarding what MoonLightMan said in #414, Does anyone know how much $$$ it would take to create a web radio station?
Comment by moonlightman
Anyone? Anyone?
What to do with all this anger:fu:
grief?:-(
Meeting up with Travis did my heart good today.
I find hope in brilliant young minds that care…
but still WTF can we DO now…?:smack:

The podcast of the Un-official Marc Maron on AAR WAKE is up!
Maron on AAR Wake
It’s on my old 24 podcast site so if you see some talk of Jack Bauer, don’t worry. You’re still at the right place.
You can also find the feed on iTunes. Search for K. Barrick or 24. The show is/was called 24 Weekly Debriefing.
If you’d like to have the plain mp3 file for whatever reason, e-mail me at kbarri@artic.edu.
Thanks!
Yeh, PJ what are we not seeing? (I am also still looking but I have this site and do not want to let go.)
Thanks for the “bait” MoonLightMan.
:growl::fist::jason:ARREST! IMPEACH! VIGILANCE!
You are welcome. I think you should talk string. Sometimes its good to “fiddle” just to stay sane. Perhaps if we “crack” the string code we can change the world and reenchant it once again…..and the forests will echo with :rofl2:
I know exactly what you meant NOW
Thanks…I was on her site but too late to post and hear:(
Calling oh paint girl, your she Can we talk…?
MoonLightMan, your question FED me to respond. BRILLIANT:!::love:
Hi sblue. I would have become pretty tongue-tied if I spoke any more than I did the other night. Always afraid I’ll come off trite and repetitive, so I kept it short and sweet, even though I wanted to tell him how close yet how far I was from attending the last MS show – I was under the covers at a friend’s house in Brooklyn, propping one eye open at that ungodessly hour, with the radio glued to my ear, kicking myself that I cannot be upright at that hour. That all would have made for boring airtime, so I’ll just bore you all with it here :roll:
Goodnight:sheep:
OOppss- I hope you didn’t take it that I was bored…I was just saying sweet untroubled dreams if that is possible just now.
sbluefox , Can we still talk String on another day?
:pent::knit::gate:Pleasant Dreams
ex-ny’er = Brilliant, and even on TMMS:wink:
Yes!
Now that I know you are here it is hard to leave.
I will have to read more about string theory- I only know string management …weaving knitting:knit:
moonlightman, re #430  …and putting on right now …to have me and “…the forest echo in :rofl2:”, once again and in future..
sbluefox , :knit:but the positive “web we weave” :knit: …”Untie a knot, tie a new not BIND IT (bush) and set IT FREE…”
What about Paint Girl? I think that’s referring to me…. I don’t know.
I’m kinda scared of you guys here on the seditionists blog. You’re much smarter than I.
Druid, I am not a very experienced blogger. Your post sort of flew by me. (re#438)
There’s alot to learn here and many different people here. Come hang out. I am listening to your wake right now and suddenly I am awake:omg:
Painting Girl rocks!
sbluefox: That’s probably just because my voice comes BOOMING across the speakers every once in awhile because I’m not a master multi-tasker yet. And didn’t normalize that file yet.
I’ve got to hit the hay… Hope people check out the Wake podcast. It was a hell of a good time and I think it’s a good thing to keep doing until Maron pops up again in our ears.
My Blog about the Marc Maron Show Wake
Oh yeah just as I was reading this the FU danny Goldberg outburst
occured just had closed the windows though.
Awww, Druid thank you. Listen all, g’night and sweet dreams, I’ve got to sign off and get ready to go to sleep. G’night all:sheep::yawn::sheep:
MoonLightMan…The bloggers put up with me…since I for very many years, was in mountains with a few wolves. …and I was and MOSTLY (but not totally anymore:-( ) still a misanthropic recluse. But I was a “Fine Arts” major.
…so exactly what did I say that needs to be decipher:?: ๐ 8) ๐
It was #438. Dont’t worry, somtimes I have to spend deciphering other things as well. I am jealous, I wish I could do what you have done. If I had the $$$ I would go get lost in Alaska or somewhere remote just to try to forget all this shit.
PJ, it probably got lost in the many “blogs” but I did touch on the “String T. AND It HELPED To Bring up a GREAT IDEA:!::wink:
I love that word- reenchant.
listening to Painting girls podcast -Mort ‘s James Griffin (Bread)rememberance.
MoonLightMan …echoing in :rofl2: was special words in “Stairway To Heaven”.:wink:
Did I answer your question? I can be a bit  with what I call Lead Ballon Humour…(it doesn’t “fly”:D
๐ )
:smack:Got It! Its what i thought.
I/we bought (barely) raw land many years ago…then pretented our army tent was a Yurt and then…….
You are evidently needed here for now…golly gee, your idea alone…well what can I say except THX
 well folks I am out, I am going to go count the endless :sheep: as tomorrow comes early. Lets hope tommorrow is better than today.:pent:
sbluefox , ๐ isn’t that enchanting :rofl2:
moonlightman, :pent::knit::gate:Pleasant Dreams
Its sounds like quite and adventure. I would really like to hear about it. You must have endless tales. It sounds like you walden ponded it. Now I am really jealous. I am not quite sure what idea I had …..but I hope it helped.
Sounds like a magical radical life:rofl2::nod:
I just read that Bush said to Putin that Russia should implement Iraqi style reforms…..Putin replied…”No Thanks”:rofl2::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:
Putins sense of humor is amazing… he is really able to show Bush for what he is ….a total ASSCLOWN
