Alright, we’re over hump with this week, and close to my last weekend here in the nation’s capitol . Counting today, I’ve got nine more days to get through before I can pack up my shit and get out of here. I just hope the a/c holds up.
Iraq’s PM was here yesterday, and I guess he told Congress he wants Iraq to help stabilize the Middle East. Um, OK there Nuri (or is it al-Maliki?), we appreciate the thought, but, why don’t you see if you can’t get civilian deaths down below 100 in your own country? You know – you stand up, so we can stand down. That kinda shit.
I also see that a jury has decided Andrea Yates was nutsy-cuckoo when she drowned her kids. Yep, well, those Texas juries really catch on quick, don’t they (to our lurkers from Dallas, Plano, and other parts of the Lone Star state, just kidding). I wonder if this was the first murder conviction appeal based on whether the prosecutor was paying close enough attention to Law & Order?
Speaking of Law & Order, I was watching a rerun of L&O, Criminal Intent on USA last night (because, like, that’s about all there is to do for free, when they aren’t showing any porn), and damned if Stephen Colbert wasn’t in it, playing a forger (and a murderer). Whattya know. At least this summer hasn’t been a total loss.
For those of you out there in Southern California, you’ve got no excuse not to go out and see Marc this weekend, as he’ll be at the Irvine Improv with Louie CK for one show tonight, two shows on Friday, three – count ’em three – shows on Saturday, and one more show on Sunday (Marc’ll be headlining there on Augst 16th, but why wait?). For more information, check out Marc’s myspace page or the Maron Gigs page, both linked over there on the right ? .
Well, I better go check out the History Channel – you never know what might “pop up.” Have a good Thursday.
:banana: Goodnight actually :fire::omg::knit2::jason:

Israel says diplomats’ decision not to call for a halt to its Lebanon offensive at a Middle East summit has given it the green light to continue.
“We received yesterday at the Rome conference permission from the world… to continue the operation,” Justice Minister Haim Ramon said.
His comments came ahead of an Israeli cabinet meeting to decide whether to intensify the military offensive.

CAIRO, Egypt – Al-Qaida’s no. 2 leader on Thursday warned that the terrorist group would not stand idly by while “these (Israeli) shells burn our brothers” in Lebanon and Gaza.
In a taped message broadcast by al-Jazeera television, Ayman al-Zawahri, second in command to Osama bin Laden, said al-Qaida now saw “all the world as a battlefield open in front of us.”

Mortar rounds, car bomb kill 27 in Iraq
By RYAN LENZ, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 44 minutes ago
BAGHDAD, Iraq – A mortar barrage followed minutes later by a car bomb blasted Baghdad’s upscale Karradah district Thursday, killing at least 27 people and wounding 63, police said.
So, according to Bush (doesn’t that sound like According to Jim?), Hezbollah should stop “the killing of innocents?” Fine, George. How about if YOU stop the killing of innocents?
:fu::fu::fu:
George Bush = Jim Belushi. Stupid but inexplicably popular with some people of limited intelligence. Although I don’t think Courtney Thorne-Smith has ever killed someone with a car.
These ramblings might make more sense once I wake up. Or maybe not.
So what are the chances Franken will mention Norm Coleman’s dad getting busted for lewd & lascivious conduct yesterday? Family values, y’all. :hubba:
Senator says Iraqi PM won’t call Hezbollah terrorists
RAW STORY

(Updated to include DNC Chairman Howard Dean’s comments on Iraqi PM)
United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) said today that Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki refused to answer his questions about whether or not Hezbollah is a terrorist organization, according to a transcript acquired by RAW STORY.
“This morning I asked him directly, ‘Do you believe that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization?'” Durbin told reporters after Maliki’s address to Congress. “He did not respond. He would not respond to that question.”
Durbin claims that the Iraqi foreign minister told him later that, “at a meeting of Arab nations they had joined with others in being critical of what Hezbollah has done.”
“I think,” Durbin concluded, “that is the extent of the statements that will be made by the Iraqi delegation.”
Durbin went on to stress that he’s more concerned about the state of Iraq, where casualties continue to be higher than those in Lebanon:
“During the last 14 or 15 days, we have watched the news 24/7 about the violence in Lebanon and Israel. During that period of time, about 30 civilians a day are being killed, which is a terribly high number. During that same period of time, approximately 100 civilians a day are being killed in Iraq. That is not covered as closely… In that period of time that I just referred to, the Israelis lost 22 soldiers and have broke the hearts of the families and people of that great nation. In that same period, the American people lost 24 soldiers in Iraq.”
At a business leader gathering on Wednesday in Florida, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean called al-Maliki an “anti-Semite,” according to the Associated Press.
“The Iraqi prime minister is an anti-Semite,” said Dean.
“We don’t need to spend $200 and $300 and $500 billion bringing democracy to Iraq to turn it over to people who believe that Israel doesn’t have a right to defend itself and who refuse to condemn Hezbollah,” Dean added.

We all appreciate him here, and he was crucial to making MS and TMMS as great as they were (still can’t figure out why these two shows aren’t on the radio, and, no, damnit, I will not get over it). I would be happy to set him up, as I did Marc. Anyhow, if he wants, he can e-mail me at my username here at morningseditionists.com.

Security Cabinet rejects IDF’s request for large-scale reserve call-up aimed at expanding southern Lebanon incursion. Ministers call on army to ‘pound villages from the air, turn them into sand boxes’ before ground troops enter
Ronny Sofer
Saying no to the IDF: the Security Cabinet decided Thursday afternoon not to broaden the military operations in southern Lebanon, and to reject the army’s request for a large-scale reserve call-up, aimed at expanding ground incursions in the region.
The Cabinet also stressed Israel had no intention of opening a new front with Syria, and that actions against Hizbullah will continue in the same manner exercised until now.
Justice Minister Haim Ramon said in the meeting that “a village like Bint Jbeil, whose residents were alerted to evacuate and had left the place, and in which only Hizbullah gunmen remained, should be pounded from the air and with artillery before ground troops enter.”
Ramon also called on the Cabinet to authorize strikes against civilian infrastructure used by Hizbullah, including electricity. “Hizbullah must not be allowed to use civilian population as human shields,” he stated. “Even international law allows to target places from which shooting attacks are being carried out, especially after they have been warned,” he added.

Did anyone else catch Brian from Everett calling in to the Stephanie Miller show today? They were cracking on Condi Rice playing piano, and Brian wanted assurance that they were only making fun of her and not of all piano players.
It was funnier than it sounds, trust me. It was weird hearing him on a show other than with Maron… kinda out of context.

From New Orleans to Gaza
Squeezing the Last Drops from Palestine
By RICHARD HARTH
New Orleans.
Thirsty in New Orleans
On Sunday, August 29th of last year, the hurricane we’d been watching metastasize in the Gulf of Mexico crossed from sea to land, disfiguring and permanently altering the city of New Orleans. Our beloved and often backward backwater became instant front page news across the country, in Europe and nearly everyplace else–a 9/11-style catastrophe (in truth, much larger in scale) that was soon on everyone’s lips.
It was unthinkable that a modern city could simply drop off the radar like a doomed passenger jet, but soon enough, we were alone, incommunicado; the accessories of modernity-radios, television, cooling systems to protect us from suffocating heat, street lamps to illuminate the increasingly terrifying nights, put to ruin in a few short hours. On Poydras Avenue near the Louisiana Superdome, the sky seemed spray-painted with stars. It was the first time in 100 years they were visible above the extinguished city.

Peace on Trial

(Cut in)-When Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, Britain, France, and Israel invaded Egypt and began advancing on the Suez Canal. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower demanded that the invasion stop. Resolutions in the UN Security Council called for a cease-fire–but Britain and France vetoed them. Then the United States appealed to the General Assembly and proposed a resolution calling for a cease-fire and a withdrawal of forces. The General Assembly held an emergency session and passed the resolution. Britain and France withdrew from Egypt within a week.
The appeal to the General Assembly was made under a procedure called “Uniting for Peace.” This procedure was adopted by the Security Council so that the UN can act even if the Security Council is stalemated by vetoes. Resolution 377 provides that, if there is a “threat to peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression” and the permanent members of the Security Council do not agree on action, the General Assembly can meet immediately and recommend collective measures to U.N. members to “maintain or restore international peace and security.” The “Uniting for Peace” mechanism has been used ten times, most frequently on the initiative of the United States.
There was a significant global effort to use the Uniting for Peace procedure to head off the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Lawyers at the Center for Constitutional Rights drafted a proposed “Uniting for Peace” declaring military action without a Security Council resolution authorizing such action is contrary to the UN Charter and international law. In April, 2003, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Arab League announced they would take the impending attack to the General Assembly. Then-Assembly President Jan Kavan said he was expecting a request for such a meeting momentarily.

Hey, I’m turning twenty-one on Saturday, peeps!:40: I think I’ll go to the Blue Moon or something. Maybe. What do you all think I should do?
Hey, Happy upcoming 21, Travis.
Hey, thanks, man!:fist:
I’ve never been in a cast before, but I wore leg braces for a couple months and I was confined to my bed, too. That shit sucks; and yeah, I don’t think many people can possibly know what it’s like…Um, wait…you mean odolescence. I’m fucked-up. Never mind.
Um, I’ll just go read the news and whatnot now, I guess…. Or something
I was in the cast of Damn Yankees. And The All American. Other than that, I closest I came was having to wear a back brace after I crushed my T-10. Didn’t have to wear it 24/7 (but my back hurt like hell for a while).
Yeah, that made you a little bit shorter, too, right?
My time is running out on the computers here in the library. I’ve also got a bad case of lazy fingers or something. Later, PJ. Oh, my buddy just got an HP, so I should have an internet connection soon.:alc:
No nation has a “Right to Exist” dumb shit Elliot..Mexico does not recognize our right to occupy the south east. Listen to this fucker.
These base issues have been resolved for quite a while, Elliot. Palestinians who support UN 242 recognize Israel’s existence. To recognize Israel’s “right to exist” would mean that the Palestinians recognize the right to what happened to them during Israel’s nation building phase–and beyond. It was the right of Israel to drive Palestinians off of their land. It was Israel’s right to ethnic cleanse the Palestinians, right John? John Elliot demonstrates the general state of ignorance of Middle East issues among “liberals”.
so i am going to a comedy show tonight here in salt lake and the comedian chick is a marc maron fan! i met her in the shuttle to the hotel she seems nice and has a pic on her myspace of her anti-war puppy!

It’s hard to meet people who even heard of Marc (outside of Air America fans), but I gues in the comedy community it’s more common…
While waiting for our radio fix from Marc and Jim, et al, try a celebration of some vintage stuff from the guy who brought us the LaChoy Dragon, Sunsweet Pitted Prunes, (Still rather badly wrinkled) and the sesquicentennial of the State of Oregon.

Thanks for the link. If one thing we have in common, it’s a jonesin’ for the comedy fix.
Here is my Lieberman/Clinton/Lamont thing finally…I missed alot of what I wanted to say but I probably said enough and I’m tired!
Andy, which PDA do you have?
Im using a palm TX and I just got a bluetooth keyboard for when Im on the road…just have to be someplace with a wireless thats not locked or at starbucks….and there is a ton of unlocked wireless out there!!
Seanie- why not get a PDA phone that you can post from?…I had one but it was a little screwed up so I split it to a phone and a Palm TX for a bigger screen.
because they cost 400 dollars!
I spent half of that….but it was worth it…cant you write it off your taxes as a business expense?
anyway, they have some pretty great phone PDAs that are not 400…maybe 200…like the new one at verizon….
My recent correspondence with AAR:
July 27, 2006, 7:33 AM I wish I knew how a so-called liberal entertainment concern could so ardently aspire to banality. Now that removed the main reason, by far, tha I paid for “premium,” I would like to be compensated. I think a refund of half my money would be fair.
July 27, 2006, 11:05 AM Unfortunatley sir, we can not give you a full refund for your gold pass membership due to the loss of one show that is still availible via premium archives. How about a cupple months worth of crdit towards your next subscription?`AAR WEB TEAM
July 28, 2006, 12:12 AM Thanks for your prompt reply. I’m not asking for a full refund, just half. The archives are not useful to me since I’ve already heard all of the shows. That’s why I think a 1/2 refund is reasonable. I wish I could use the credit, but I won’t be renewing my subscription (unless of course Marc is back).
look at this:Its a tool to figureout how many seats the Dems will take in the Nov elections…interesting statistical analysis, I guess….
Dr- it just sucks…doesnt it? Im so crushed that AAR has turned out to be so crappy…I used to listen all day and now there is close to nothing…maybe Franken’s guest host parts, with a fast forward through the rest…..
Mom cant even listen…
And I accidentally heard an old podcast of Riley trying out his schtick when Marc went away for a few days towards the end of MS, and he starts with that good morning to all garbage men…what a slap to the philosohper kings and queens….oh my god…I cant even think of it…..
Im so glad I never paid them for premium…I was replay a/v all the way. I need to find other content to listen to…maybe the young turks?
Melina, Yeah there’s nothing on now but Sam Seder. In the not-funny vein though, I think Ring of Fire is very good. Also have you ever heard of Dave Emory (anti-fascist historian on WFMU Tues. 6pm). He puts out some real heavy, fascinating stuff…not funny, but hey I’m not in much of a funny mood anymore.

A psychologist tells me how upset she is about a meeting she attended a few days ago of the northern coordinating committee of her profession. They were discussing how best to treat the shock and trauma suffered by Israeli children under the bombardment from Hizbullah. The meeting concluded with an agreement that the psychologists would reassure the children with the statement: “The army is there to protect us.”
And so, the seeds of fascism are unthinkingly sown for another generation of children, children like our own.
No one agreed with my friend when she dissented, arguing that this was not the message to be telling impressionable minds, and that violence against the Other is not a panacea for our problems. Parents, not soldiers, are responsible for protecting their children, she pointed out. Tanks, planes and guns bring only fear and more hatred, hatred that will one day return to haunt us.
The meeting concluded with an agreement that the psychologists would reassure the children with the statement: “The army is there to protect us.”
How very scary. The reshaping of psychology in evil hands. Or maybe that’s all psychology really ever was, a tool to shape behaviors by telling people bullshit.children who are just naturally repelled by violence being told that it’s a good thing” when it’s “for our side.” That violence can be ok if we’re doing it…that’s what this is all about. Sick.
