Well, back to the salt mines for many of us today. Not for me, though, since I’ve got a few weeks off before classes start. Of course, I have a bunch of things on the list to do around the house, and Siggy has gotten used to going for walkies every day again (that didn’t take long), so it’s not like I won’t have plenty to keep me busy. So I guess I’d better get going (after I take a little nap).
Have a good one.

bbc news says that bp is going to close its oil field in alaska because of pipe corrosion. well, hurrah. 🙂
bp has known about its corroded pipes since the early 1990s and has refused to repair them and has refused to monitor them (except for the most minimal monitoring) and doesn’t mind soaking the alaska wildlands with 500 plus oil spills a year. 😥
i say if bp can’t take care of its corroded pipes, then shut them down. :fist:

from a new book by Peter Tertzakian called A Thousand Barrels a Second: The Coming Oil Break Point and the Challenges Facing an Energy Dependent World.
“Historically, substitutions in the energy world take a long time and there’s no reason to think the next substitution is going to happen overnight. While it’s likely that we may not run out of oil before a substitute is found, it will be decades or more into the future before any new solutions make a difference.”
…In the history of energy break points, we have always been able to avert catastrophe, but that doesn’t mean the temporary pain and uncertainty hasn’t been significant to the people living through the era.”
the oil price has just risen to $77 on the news of the bp oil field closure.

What the Israeli governments do not realize is that neither Hamas nor Hezbollah need Israel. It is Israel that needs them, and needs them desperately. If Israel wants not to become a Crusader state that is in the end extinguished, it is only Hamas and Hezbollah that can guarantee the survival of Israel. It is only when Israel is able to come to terms with them, as the deeply-rooted spokespersons of Palestinian and Arab nationalism, that Israel can live in peace.
Achieving a stable peace settlement will be extremely difficult. But the pillars of Israel’s present strategy – its own military strength and the unconditional support of the United States – constitute a very thin reed. Its military advantage is diminishing and will diminish steadily in the years to come. And in the post-Iraqi years, the United States may well drop Israel in the same way that France did in the 1960s.
Israel’s only real guarantee will be that of the Palestinians. And to get this guarantee, Israel will need to rethink fundamentally its strategy for survival.

From today’s Boston Globe:
Verizon customers in Maine have asked the state’s Public Utilities Commission to investigate whether the telecom giant violated privacy laws by cooperating with a domestic surveillance program. The PUC is expected to decide Monday whether to open such a probe.
In a July 28 letter to the PUC, the U.S. Department of Justice cites national security as a key reason for its opposition to a state investigation. The seven-page letter suggests a lawsuit is likely if Maine regulators decide to investigate.

Ginsburg is leaving, I wonder what’s going on?
Wow….interesting news….I wish we could get some inside poop on this.
I made reservations for the Sat Maron early show (8PM)…there is a late show too…anyway, I made a res. for 5 hoping for Granny, PJ, Son, and my sister…but if anyone else is coming and wants to sit together there is a faxed form to hold the table.
Its a $20 cover and if we want to stay for the late show they will reseat us at our table but we will have to pay cover again. They expect it to be very busy both nights.
So, if people are thinking of coming…get on it!!
Hey, that’s interesting about Ginsburg. I didn’t realize Krantz had left, too (he was the interim CEO who was trying to get Marc to come back). Would have been interesting if Marc had gone for it, only to have another Goldberg come in and screw him over again.
EDITED: Hey, what’s goin’ on?

I have to go wash my hair in the sink. I’ll correspond with ya’ll later. This blog needs some juice! No laughing at my short story that isn’t finished yet, OK?
Short Story: Journey From The Moon (The Strange Trip, part I)
It was a quarter past three in the afternoon, when Ben arrived, leisurely walking into The Blue Moon with his guitar and straw hat. “Hey, how’s it going?” I said. A smile emerged after I recovered from the pursed lips’ of bitter beer, while rising to greet him. Finally, we were on our way.
The previous night was full of booze, sloppy conversations of politics, more booze, and finally the drive home; where we made our drunken pact to meet up at the ‘Moon’ the following afternoon at three, and carry out our mutual resolutions of the day.
Even though Ben was late- that’s inconsequential- I was not concerned. For once you are in the Blue Moon, there is no one with a sense or a caring for the relative time it is. Not even for the day or for the month it is is of much importance, Ben explained to me some time before. “Notice how no one is wearing a watch here?” he had said, lifting his beer for a sip with one hand and gesturing to his wrist with the other.
Clocks hang from the walls upside down, even made with numbers in the wrong order. Patrons stare at them with no currents running through. No jolts or sensations of awareness, that something is out-of-whack, passes through their brains. Maybe the awareness of time is lost or inhibited by the consumption of the bar’s menu. Or, maybe, the patrons who are drawn to this particular dive have no use for the present time: the ever, eternal now.
On this particular day, like always, my watch was in its usual position- on my left wrist. But I had more pressing matters on the brain than that of what time it was. For we were in search of the elusive herb. :bong:

Wanwenxia, the mamet piece (#15) is terrific. :fist:
if we’re going to have ANY hope for the future, we have to first of all have a clear view of what the problem is. mamet puts his finger on the nub:
begin quote
“Our country is now largely de-industrialized. In the waning days of the industrial state, big business—which is to say, the Republicans—broke the labor movement by threatening to take jobs elsewhere, should the unions continue to demand legitimate wages.
The Republican Party turned the workers, the vast bulk of Americans, against labor, and in so doing they divided and conquered. Big business gladly accepted the gifts the now-nonunionized worker gave them, and, when the American worker could give no more, big business took the jobs out of the country, which they had intended all along.”
end quote
the corporations are in charge and they are going to ruin the rest of us without any remorse whatsoever. 👿
the republicans can yell marxist and socialist at us, but they’re just trying to scare us away from seeing what’s obvious if we just look.
“you can’t stop us on the road to freedom,
you can’t keep us ’cause our eyes can see…”
van morrison,”tupelo honey”
Since no one is here right now, and Fred was taken away by aliens or something, I guess I’ll go try and add some conflict and, uh… maybe a climax and then a conclusion to the short story. I’m not sure were all this is going, though, so it may take a while:doh:
Alfredo Arreguin. Is this guy still in Seattle, Sblue?
Ok, OK! I’ll read the Mamet piece before I finish the short story. Later
Yes- I happened into an art gallery in California where they were showing his work. I know there has to be a gallery in Seattle that has a few but it was some of the trippiest art I have ever seen. Speaking of trips.

Goliath Pretending to be David
The Deadly US-Israeli Shell Game at the UN
By JONATHAN COOK
Nazareth.
If there were any remaining illusions about the purpose of Israel’s war against Lebanon, the draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a “cessation of major hostilities” published at the weekend should finally dispel them. This entirely one-sided document was drafted, the Hebrew-language media have reported, with close Israeli involvement. The top adviser to the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, talked through the resolution with the US and French teams, while the Israeli Foreign Ministry had its man alongside John Bolton [yet another of Israel’s men, Eds ] at the UN building in New York.
The only thing preventing Israeli officials from jumping up and down with glee, according Aluf Benn of the daily Haaretz newspaper, was the fear that “demonstrated Israeli enthusiasm for the draft could influence support among Security Council members, who could demand a change in wording that may adversely affect Israel.” So no celebration parties till the resolution is passed.
Instead, in a ploy familiar from previous negotiating processes, Israel submitted to the US a list of requests for amendments to the resolution. When Israel agrees to forgo these amendments, it will, of course, be able to take credit for its flexibility and desire to compromise; Lebanon and Hizbullah, on the other hand, will be cast as villains, rejecting international peace-making efforts.
The reason for Israel’s barely concealed pleasure is that Hizbullah now faces an international diplomatic and public relations assault in place of the unsuccessful Israeli military one. Israel, and the United States, are trying to set a series of traps for Hizbullah — and Lebanon too — that will justify Israel’s reoccupation of south Lebanon, the further ethnic cleansing of the country, and a widening of the war to include Iran, and possibly Syria.

This ia posted on Daily Kos, today. It was released by Zack Space, Ney’s Democratic challenger:
“In a desperate move to stop surging congressional cha
llenger Zack Space, Bob Ney dropped out of and pushed into the congressional race his handpicked candidate, who is also one of Bob Taft’s favorites.
‘Bob Ney represented the culture of corruption in Washington and Joy Padgett represents the culture of corruption in Columbus,’ said Joe Shafer, campaign manager for Zack Space. ‘Joy Padgett is tied at the hip to the most corrupt politicians in Ohio: Bob Ney, Bob Taft and Jim Petro. For Joy Padgett, being handpicked by Ney and appointed by Taft is quite an indictment.'”

Evolution reversed in mice
The mouse looks the same but has an ancient gene
US researchers have taken a mouse back in time some 500 million years by reversing the process of evolution.
By engineering its genetic blueprint, they have rebuilt a gene that was present in primitive animals.
The ancient gene later mutated and split, giving rise to a pair of genes that play a key role in brain development in modern mammals.
The scientists say the experiments shed light on how evolution works and could lead to new gene therapy techniques.
“We are first to reconstruct an ancient gene,” said co-researcher Petr Tvrdik of the University of Utah. “We have proven that from two specialised modern genes, we can reconstruct the ancient gene they split off from.

Republicans push Santorum ‘momentum’ as gap narrows in polls

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is continuing its push to paint the troubled re-election campaign of Senator Rick Santorum as competitive by claiming a huge cash advantage, RAW STORY has learned.
Polls have long showed challenger Bob Casey leading Santorum by double digits. However, that gap has dwindled to about 6-8%, according to some pollsters

Well, I wrote a damning letter to AAR. I cant believe that they might not renew Sam’s contract…they should be crawling to him!
I told them that without Sam, thats probably that for AAR for me….
I gave my suggestions (but of course thinking that maybe Maron cold have that slot….eeekkk….I really want Sam to stay and take Al’s slot)…and part of that was to beg Lizz Winsted to come back and pair with Rachel again.
Her show with Maury and Connie got cancelled so she might be available.
Dude, I need to learn how to write:doh:
What are you talking about???

You just have to write:nod:

Have to find something besides fast food in this town.
The Wi-Fi isn’t working too well here. Uh, I’m not really sure what I’m talking about, but most of the stuff I write needs major editing. Like, I’ve already found a ton of mistakes with that partially finish short story. I guess I have to keep working at it.

I think I have to go eat. Be back later
so uh is anyone gonna be in LA on the 17th?
Im worried about the lamont thing….Lieberfck has had his Lieberkidz plaster the town with Vote Joe signs, even though its illegal….Ive been driving from one end of town to the other and delivering signs and bumper stickers etc…I did some phone banking…We just dont have the manpower and Joe is pouring it on now.
I just got an autocall of Joe saying that he considers it to be the most important thing to get the troops home as soon as possible and that he stands by his vote on the war, but thinks the war is horrible…huh?
I had to hang up before he was finished.
The kidz have declared this mischeif night and they are gonna go out and tear down all the Lamont stuff….theyt are so horrible.
Meanwhile, I just found out that I have to take Will down to White Plains to get his casts removed tomorrow because the Dr is going on vacation so wants to do it now…and there is no other day….after I cancelled everything so I could work at the primary….
I am so pissed….
And they really need people!
If anyone has time, go on moveon.com and do the phone banking there. They are just repeating some of the calls that the Lamont people are making and the Dems are making….so its a little…ugh…like the Kerry election.
Im just heart sick about this….maybe Im just getting depressed or something.
It starts with losing Maron…now Sam…AAR in general…then elections and seeing people lie and act badly….
Seanie, can you come east for the last Sat of the month?
Hi and bye ppl. I just wandered in long enough to catch up on the blog. Gots to get some sleep. I did another podcast today. My audio still sucks so I ordered a mic preamp for the Shure Mic from Sweetwater.com hoping it will help. If not perhaps I will try Melina’s tip and drag the mic into the bathroom.
Noticed someone said something jokingly about doing a “cnickthomas video podcast” in yesterdays blog. I can’t even get a descent audio blog much less video! Silly ppl. Give me a break . . . I’m learning here. It takes time to become a professional. Maybe I like being an underachiever. I’ve always been pretty good at that.
Tomorrow’s the BIG DAY! Go Lamont Go! Iraq is descending into a civil war. There might be a glimmer of hope in Lebanon? Geo Bush is still the President!!! God help us all. Oh yeah, I don’t believe in God so I guess we’re SOL. I still hear the morse code messages in my computer speakers. Maybe its my parents trying to talk to me from the otherside? I wish I could understand what they are trying to tell me. One day I’ll put a gun up to my head and pull the trigger. Until then I hope to have fun.
Cya all tomorrow afternoon. Have a good night. Dream a little dream for me.
:fu:i will be in phoenix az if i am still doing this tour like i assume i will be:nod:
then again i will get to hang out with kristapea!
oh yes…well, you and krista will have fun….and maybe we’ll get a new Marc show on the radio if they are losing Sam…and then open up a good slot….
Yeah…go lamont….keep your fingers crossed sheeple…this means so much more than the state of CT and no matter what happens we apparently have a Dem in the seat….but its more about drawing the line for the neocons and the people speaking out. But, I can feel the fear here…..people are really scared.
cnick….dont say you will put a gun to your head an pull the trigger, ok?
If you ever feel that bad you must try a bunch of different things to feel better because I know thatyou can feel better!…and how could you not want to see what happens next?….or at least leave it all behind and go live on a deserted beach desert island…?
At least try some antidepressants or something!
I just know that besides the tragedy, it would be very hard on the people around you…and not a good thing to say even in jest.
Will has been talking about kiilling himself since he was very little, and before he had any sort of influence from TV or whatever that it was even a thing that people do….so, I am very sensitive to that.
If someone really wants to die they tend not to announce it anyway…so I guess all is OK here, and there…..:blech:
anyway, maybe Ill do a podcast with you when you get your sound problems sorted out….maybe its best if we both went in the bathroom and called eachother….heh…
nite all….time for the countdown rerun!
My battery is runnin’ low:yawn:
