So, the holiday weekend is over, effectively ending the summer vacation season. We did the typically American thing yesterday – we went to the Chinese Buffet (fortunately, there were none of Marc’s “Fat Marshals” – or Jim Earl – to hover disapprovingly around the sneeze guards, scowling). Poor Siggy didn’t get to have much fun, though I did take him for a walk through the woods and over to the school near my in-laws’ house. He had to stay on the leash, though, since there were a bunch of damn people around, and you can never tell how they’ll react to an 80 pound dog running full speed in their direction (not that he really cares about them – he’s mostly oblivious to humans, unless they come to the house).
So, anyway, today is back to work for those with jobs, and a day of reckoning for me, as I scamble to make up for all the shit I should have gotten done the last week or so. And if Siggy doesn’t get out to the park today, he’s liable to nose-poke me to death.
See ya.
FIRST looks like.

On September 10 and 11, ABC is planning to air a “docudrama” called “Path to 9/11,” billed as “an objective telling of the events of 9/11.” In fact, the film was written by an unabashed conservative who twists the facts to blame President Clinton.
The show’s official blog attracted many comments from the public criticizing the film for its inaccuracies. In response, writer Cyrus Nowrasteh and director David Cunningham posted a number of strikingly defensive blog posts. Some excerpts:
Clarification
1) This is not a documentary…
2) This is not a right wing agenda movie…By the way, we are also being accused of being a left wing movie that bashes Bush.
-D. Cunningham

Further clarafication
This movie is well-supported and well-documented. But everyone should be aware, and we say so upfront in a long legend — “The following dramatization…has composite and representative characters and incidents, and time compressions have been used for dramatic purposes.”
…Whoever wants to write and talk about this movie is free to do so, and we’ve been very open in talking to them. We can’t control who writes what…
–Cyrus Nowrasteh

Even Further Clarification
…The redundant statement about Clinton and the emphasis to protect his legacy instead of trying to learn from the failures of BOTH administrations smells of “agenda”.

GOP Congress blocked Clinton push for anti-terror legislation
by John in DC – 9/04/2006 11:10:00 AM
CNN, July 30, 1996
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, emerged from the meeting and said, “These are very controversial provisions that the [Clinton] White House wants. Some they’re not going to get.” ….[Hatch] also said he had some problems with the president’s proposals to expand wiretapping.
So Bill Clinton, rather than just breaking the law as Bush did (then again, perhaps this is why Bush broke the law – he knew from history that the Republicans controlling the congress would oppose his efforts to expand wiretapping), decided to go to the Republican congress in 1996 and ask them for increased authority to do more eavesdropping in order to stop the terrorists – stop September 11. Senior Republican Senator Orrin Hatch, one of the GOP’s top picks for the Supreme Court and a GOP committee chair, objected.

It just gets me sick – if they have to air something on television on the event it should memoralize the victims and discuss 9/11 as something that brought people together and not politicize it –
“an anniversary special on the event on television” is not the place to do that – this event has already been politicized and exploited to the point where we can’t have an honest day to just look back and relive the feelings of the day –
I am so tired of it – no, I don’t want to forget 9/11, it was a standout day in my life and I lost some people I loved and it did “change things” around here (and for me in particular) as cliche as that might sound – and I do want it memoralized, but separate from the partisan politics surrounding it now. I know that’s not impossible because around that time it was done, till Bush and others came along and started “using” it to their own purposes. Anyway, that’s how I feel.

has a really good section called “Hijiking 9/11” about how only Republicans screened and reviewed the film –
CNN 7:02 p.m, EDT Sept 4, 2006
WASHINGTON – Most Americans are angry about “something” when it comes to how the country is run, and they are more likely
than in previous years to vote for a challenger this November, a new poll suggests.
A majority of Americans surveyed – and a higher percentage than recorded during the same time last year – said things in the United
States are going “badly.” Among this year’s respondents, 29 percent said “pretty badly” and 25 percent – up from 15 percent a
month ago – answered “very badly.” By comparison, 37 percent described the way things are going as “fairly well,” and 9 percent
answered “very well.”
A majority – 55 percent – said they are more likely to back a challenger in races on this year’s ballot. Such anti-incumbent
sentiment is higher than the 48 percent recorded as “pro-challenger” in a similar survey in 1994, when the GOP took control
of both houses of Congress.
Democrats lead Republicans by a 10-point margin, 53 to 43 percent, among likely voters asked which party’s congressional candidate
they would support in November, and Democrats held a 56-40 lead on the same question among registered voters.

And if it wasn’t dangerous enough for war correspondents:

I love this emphasis by the thugs on Security when we have no security problems other than those they have caused or concocted. Friends of Hillary hint she may pull out of presidential race
Sarah Baxter
FRIENDS of Hillary Clinton have been whispering the unthinkable. Despite her status as the runaway frontrunner for the 2008 Democratic nomination for president, some of her closest advisers say she might opt out of the White House race and seek to lead her party in the Senate.
The former first lady longs to return to the White House with husband Bill as consort. Only last week she told television viewers America would be led by a woman one day. “Stay tuned,” she said.
First, however, she has to win the election. Some Democratic party elders — the American equivalent of the Tories’ “men in grey suits” — say Clinton may back out of the race of her own volition.
“I would not be surprised if she were to decide that the best contribution she can make to her country is to forget about being president and become a consensus-maker in the Senate,” said a leading Democratic party insider. “She believes there is no trust between the two political sides and that we can’t function as a democracy without it.”
(SNIP)
The solution, insiders say, is for Clinton to take over as Senate minority leader in 2009 from the lacklustre Harry Reid, senator for Nevada. One well-respected blog, The Washington Note, recently claimed that Reid privately told Clinton the job was hers if she gave up her presidential ambitions.
Reid’s office denied it, but the claim made its way into the Los Angeles Times where it was suggested she would make a “superlative Senate leader” while keeping her options open for the 2012 presidential race
http://tinyurl.com/o6tma
=============================
Whats with this minority leader in 2009 shit. If they don’t fix these problems they won’t be around in 2009.:jason::jason::jason:
We actually pay our interns ..I think they get like $15 an hour for technical jobs which isn’t bad if you are living at home.:paranoid:
there was a campaign for folks to donate NT$100 (US$3) to raise a million NT$ to pay for the protest. They got 5 mil(?)orsomething like that.
I think it would be great if she didn’t seek the nomination in 2008. I’d like to think that she’ll have to wait until 2016, though, since I hope John Edwards or somebody has a nice, two-term run. Maybe she can be VP on a Gore-Clinton ticket.
Yeah, not at AAR. Their internships page says “unpaid,” right at the top.
the dorks are really mad they aren’t going for a walk this a.m.

Hillary is in her high 50’s or low 60’s so she can’t wait to long. It might be difficult for the voter to discern between senility and normal campaign BS though. :omg::shock:
Thanks, FK! :rofl2:
Hillary is 58 – she’ll be 59 at the end of October. So, if she has to wait ten years, she’d be up there a bit, but women live longer anyway. You could argue that Seante Majority Leader is a more powerful position than President (assuming you’re not a fucking loser scumbag Doctor, like Frist).
paid protests – novel idea.
she’d be better than Reid in the Senate. He’s a snooze-fest. She is much quicker on her feet and brighter. She at least was for the Alito filibuster which I think was a bellweather for identifying members of the party with guts and conviction. Alito is the antithesis of a Democrat. If they didn’t back that, they don’t deserve to call themselves a Democratic Party member.
Hey, I like that one FK. Too bad we can’t hook it up to Bush or Rummy while they’re giving a speech on the teevee.
This guy on WJ talking about terrorism is the most realistic person to talk about it in a long time. The callers ( mostly thugs) seem to see the Muslims as our enemy ( another reason for urban renewal ) .. The SBR is actually the cause of the problem but the germs that cause the patient to die never seem to see it that way..:yuck::crap::jason::jason::jason:
Hillary has (or at least had) a lot of potential. I think she might be smart enough to learn that following the DLC, poll to see what position you should take strategy isn’t the way to go. I’m willing to forgive her if she straightens out. She’s been going around here in Upstate NY, and has, by all accounts, done a great job winning people over.
yeah, she needs to amend her war talk, though. she’s in left field on that. lieberman-lite?
881. the nightmarket calls!
The big problem is petroleum. Get us off that (or at least down to the point where we don’t need foreign imports – or just from Canada, even) and we won’t need to give a crap about their stinking deserts over there. And maybe we can do something about not killing the rainforest, too. Either that, or start making oxygen from the oceans.
Hillary would have to denounce the DLC and be a mover to get rid of corporate support of the dems entirely.. well… I suspose… if it’s a good blue company that would be ok ..but … before I would vote for her. Both Hillary and Bill are on my s* list for supporting the WTO , GAT and NAFTA. :jason::jason::jason::jason:
I think her advisors told her that a woman needs to be “tough.” Plus, there’s always the connection to Israel. I’m assuming it’s tough to for a Democrat fundraise (not to mention run for the Senate in NY) w/o sucking up to the Israelis.
Ciao, KK!
with current campaign financing, can you be elected on the national level without being complicit with the dlc?
ok, i REALLY have to go do the chores and then paint. merde
:billcat:
Maybe the left needs to have a long conversation with those Dem advisers in an alley some place . The DLC advisers seem to share office space with the thug advisers.:jason::jason::jason:
Well, it’s all a matter of what the alternatives are. Voting for a candidate that’s gonna maybe get 3-5% of the vote might make me feel good, but if means somebody worse is gonna get elected, load up the Supreme Court with wingnuts, lie us into endless war, give the ultra-wealthy huge tax cuts at the expense of the poor and middle class, try to kill Social Security and the rest of the New Deal, let the oil companies run the national energy and environmental policies, then, well, I’ll hold my nose and vote for her.
The only way the dems are going to listen to the people is if you shut off their big business funding. In between elections the ability to shut down their funding ( especially in the house races) is the only way to convey them the message. :jason::jason::jason::fustrate::paranoid:
Over the next two years the left needs to go after the DLC democrats just like they went after Lieberjerk.. Even if they don’t get rid of them the noise will make them very nervous. :yuck::yuck::jason::jason::jason:
Well, I happened to listen to Larry O’Donnell last night from Al’s show on Friday, and he was talking about being shocked when Ned Lamont answered the question, “are you a liberal,” with “damn straight I am.”
That’s what these freakin’ career political “advisors” and purveyors of conventional political wisdom do. They advise candidates to never say anythgin substantive that can be used as an out of context soundbite against them, and to take positions that will supposedly piss off the least amount of people – oh, excuse, me, voters and donors, not real people. So you get candidates that appear to stand for nothing, and elections won based on the votes of about 25% of those eligible to vote.
I think the Lieberman thing is very important. If he wins in November, he and others like him will be emboldened – heroes and legends in their own minds. If Lamont wins, it should make these people understand that being Republican lite is no longer a winning strategy.
But, these people running the show now need to be stopped. That’s the first thing that needs to happen. I don’t think the Dems can get Senate this time around, but they have a good shot at the house, and I hope they pick up a substantial number of seats, and then let John Conyers get cracking.
You seem to never know what you are voting for until they get into office . The Reich wing media never tells you anything about the thugs and all the slime about the dems. ( another reason for promoting urban renewal)
Well, and as Al Gore said,
But, in order to change the system, you need to get people – lots of people, in fact – elected using that same system, and then be willing to change it once they’re in. And that’s pretty tough to do, obviously.
I think it needs to start at the local level (whether it’s an alternative party, or just candidates that get support from the grassroots, and not the party machinery), and spread upward. I just don’t see a violent revolution happening (not when such a huge percentage of the population either feels completely disenfranchised, or is complacent, or even quite satisfied with the status quo; I’ve been to my share of protests, and they sure do look pretty damn vanilla and middle class), and as enjoyable as it is to go out and hoot and holler and carry signs and make great speeches, it tends to have about zero affect on the folks in power (who probably think it’s kinda cute to see the little people out there all riled up). Millions protested on the run up to Iraq, and were ignored. There were plenty of protests before Bush’s old man’s war against Iraq, too, and that was duly ignored. Protests against the World Bank and WTO had some influence – they made sure to move their meetings to remote, difficult to access locations.
I’ve just gotten back from Long Island where there is a widespread effort to save piping plovers, birds, about 4″ long who nest on the beaches. The effort has shown success and there are now small colonies of plovers in several locations.
A four year old girl and her mom and dad were sitting on the beach when they claimed an “army” of plovers began to advance on them and several birds tried to peck at the little girl. The parents picked up the child and walked over the dune to their car where they met another group of birds which also tried to attack. A third bird clatch was encountered before they made it to the car.
The police were called and said this is the first instance of a plover attack on a human. However, the plovers were recently observed to kill a seagull and a red fox using the same tactics. The police have asked that any acts of aggression by plovers against people be reported.
I worry for the Plovers. The Bushies are in need of a new enemy from which to keep us “safe.”
Maybe the birds are realizing that the SBR is the cause of their environmental difficulties too. They have no army or air force either so they resort to mob action….. hint… hint… hint..:yuck::crap::fustrate::paranoid:
From today’s Dailykos:
A reminder that the Lieberman blog is apparently going live tomorrow. It’s basically going to be a trap to entice people to say mean things about the Last Honest Man so they can go whine to the press about how mean everyone is unlike Stay the Course Joe. I give it about 36 hours until they send out a press release along those lines. I don’t know why they’re obsessed with pointing out how nobody likes Joe, but it seems to be their campaign strategy for some reason. Maybe they should try to talk about people who actually like him for a change, although that’s pretty much Marshall Wittman, Bill Kristol, Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, and assorted other conservatives.
So, leave the Joe Blog to Joe and his pals the Bull Moose and Spezzatura. There are plenty of other places on the internets where you can say mean things about Joe.

Seattle train commuters get daily glimpse of male nude beach
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WOODWAY, Wash. — It happens in a flash as the afternoon Sounder trains carry commuters north from the city to Everett – a glance at an otherwise secluded beach frequented by mostly gay men who take it all off.
“Every day we look outside the train and count how many are there in their birthday suits,” said Sarah Thompson of Edmonds, a project manager. “It’s a plus for riding the train. It’s an added bonus. It’s the entertainment factor for the Sounder.”
The beach below a bluff in this peaceful suburb, which bills itself as “The Quiet Place,” has been a favorite with male nudists for decades. In 2004 the start of Sounder service gave them new exposure to commuters shunning the Interstate 5 traffic follies for a ride along the eastern shore of Puget Sound.
“All the women pile themselves up against the window,” said Steve Barber, a rider who works for King County law enforcement. “It’s comic relief.”

BIG TIMBER, Mont. — An enormous wildfire that has prompted the evacuation of hundreds of people continued to spread Monday.
The south-central Montana blaze has burned 26 homes and is classified as the nation’s No. 1 firefighting priority.
It has spread across 180,000 acres, or more than 280 square miles, since lightning sparked it Aug. 22. It was about 20 percent contained, authorities said.
About 265 homes were evacuated in just a few hours Sunday night on the western flank of the fast-moving blaze, said Kelly O’Connell, Sweet Grass County disaster and emergency services coordinator.
About 770 firefighters and support personnel are working the blaze.

are you kidding PJ? i cross back in forth in the truck with just my license all the time! as a matter of fact when i was doing the warped tour i crossed back and forth with my interim license without a picture no problem! maybe it is always easy for me because i put on my old jacket from when i was in the army with my name on it!
I don’t think the fools in DC have for the most part ever been to the border with either Canada or Mexico. Like lightening terrorists will strike once in a while and once in an even longer while they will cause real damage .. There is no way to close the borders and no way to check cargo at the ports without screwing up the rethugs beloved commerce and the Carlyle groups drug and people smuggling operations.:eek::eek:
FK, I kayak in northern Minnesota. The Kettle, Snake, St. Croix rivers. Kimberly Dozier is my hero, I heard she carried around a kayak with her in Iraq.
So, uh, is anyone planning on watching Couric’s first day as the CBS news anchor?
Yeah, I didn’t think so.
Goddamnit, Al Gore’s sold out. That pisses me off; I wanted to go see him.
Randi Rhodes is talking about Mike Malloy right now
You beat me to it, nick. Good for Randi.
I was wondering if she would say anything. Hooray. She’s mad as hell and she’s fighting back. :spank: :fist: Sounds like Sam is in this too. :nixon:
She’s launching a campaign to get Mike Malloy back on Air America. Go to her site for info. Call Air America’s comment line at 212-871-8290. Be polite! Or you can write Air America at comments@airamericaradio.com
Randi stresses that you be polite in your correspondence to Air America. I guess that means we can’t tell AAR what a fucking lousy job their doing in spreading the liberal agenda.
Sorry I turned sorta nuts last night, H:billcat:Oh, well. I had a good time, though.
Nick! How’s the vacation so far?
Yea, but why am I so PISSED at Randi….she didn’t start a campaign like this for Maron when he needed it!:fire:
Malloy is no Marc Maron
Randi Rhodes has just come out BIG time for Mike Malloy! :nixon:
She said he is the voice of late night for Air America and he should remain the voice. Go to http://www.therandirhodesshow.com and click on the email link and in a polite and literate manner explain to the board why this is a bad move. Some of her comments were that Mike is brilliant, angry, passionate voice that must remain on AA. And, that he is the same on the air as off. No pretense. And, some people label that as difficult and hard to manage.
Yea, but why am I so PISSED at Randi….she didn’t start a campaign like this for Maron when he needed it!
Comment by Beat around the Bush
maybe axing Malloy is making room for
Marc agasin…?????? How can you be sure?
I managed to make it to the gym this afternoon. Boy, am I outta shape! Vacation is going great, thanks Travis. I’m just relaxing here in Birmingham. The kind of vacation I need right now. I might have added a few pounds after the gym by running by Chili’s for lunch. That baked chicken was soooo gooood! Yum Yum. I’m thinking I want to try those baby back ribs next time. Don’t tell Melina!
….obviously RR didn’t care about MM….I always resented her for not doing more to keep MM!
Marc never cared for Randi. 😉
Hey “Beat around the Bush” new here? Or just a new name? Welcome n e way. I agree with you about Randi Rhodes lack of support for Maron. I doubt there is any hope for Marc ever returning to Air America. The only hope probably lies in Marc finding another network. Or XM Radio channel. Perhaps Sirrus. Marc’s much to good at radio to give it up.
So how are things with you Travis?
well….whatever isi, all I know is ever since I heard about Milloy’s departure I’ve been hoping and hoping for Maron to return in that time slot. I miss our buddy….
I’ve been blogging, albeit very infrequently, since day on morning sedition and morning seditionists
oops…*day one*
So its been looking like rain here in Birmingham so I did not make it over to Southside Birmingham for “man-in-the-street” interviews. I’m gonna try and get over there early tomorrow afternoon. I really could use some content for tomorrow’s podcast. My life is to “dull” and “lacking excitment” to talk about it all the time.
So, uh, is anyone planning on watching Couric’s first day as the CBS news anchor?
Comment by travisdem_04 — September 5, 2006 @ 2:14 pm
I might watch it if I’m not doing anything else. I watched Schieffer’s last day last Thursday, and didn’t even know it was his last day until they announced it at the end.
I trust that the normal amount of advertising for products pitching clearer vision, colonic regularity and four-hour erections will be in place as usual.
So can you imagine what H E double L we’d give Air America should they try to fire Sam Seder! Does anyone know if Seder has signed a new contract with Air America yet or not?
I know he is very apprehensive about going up against Stephanie Miller… and losing! 🙁
* same time slot*
I am doing well. I’m here at the coffee shop that H hangs out at. I hope that she doesn’t think that I’m moving in on her territory or something.
Yesterday I was at Bumbershoot, a huge music and art festival here in Seattle, and I was supposed to see Steve Miller, but ended up seeing other musicians- which wasn’t bad. And, I saw a couple short films and a couple panels. I had a good time. We also met Roxie for a couple minutes- I dunno why she didn’t want to hang out longer, though.
Um, maybe she doesn’t like to impose on other peoples’ schedules. I think I tend to do that. Unintentionally, of course- well, for the most part. I think I kept H out too long
Well Stephanie is not available everywhere. You sort of have to do contortions to listen to her. I’ve listened to her show on the stream. I did not care for her. Her voice works on my nerves. Everyone has their preferences though. My money is on Seder. I would like to see Air America’s new program schedule. Listened to a little of Jerry Springer this morning and he hasn’t said anything about being canceled or removed from Air America! So I’m wondering if Sam is being screwed over.
Yeah I noticed the festival in Seattle Travis. Sounds like fun. It is kinda hard to keep up with a 21 year old at times. Particularly one as energetic as yourself Travis.
Oh, man, car alarms are the worst invention in the world!:ear::mad:
Relief!. ..That one was rough. It must have been going off for at least ten minutes
:joe: I have to go get some. I’ll be back.
I’m still wondering how Steve Irwin managed to back into a stingray? The barb is at the rear of the stingray. Isn’t it? A freak accident I guess. I’ve heard there is footage of Steve’s final moments of life. Disturbing video I care not to see. I feel for his family. It is sort of ironic that he died in such a strange way. I’d have thought a crocodile would have got him. O well . . .
Here’s something interesting:
Will Bush Bomb Teheran? Would the Democrats Do Anything Different?
What the Fortune Teller’s Parrot Taught Me
By ALEXANDER COCKBURN
The aftershocks of Israel’s inability to crush Hezbollah continue to send their political tsunamis round the globe. After the ceasefire the Forward newspaper in New York said Bush is bad for the Jews, meaning Israel. The editorial in this influential megaphone of Jewish opinion stated that “Bush has been convinced by self-appointed spokesmen for Israel and the Jewish community that endless war is in Israel’s interest”. Forward calls for regime change among the Zionists directing U.S. foreign policy. Hardliner unilateralists out! Peace processors in! Bush “needs to hear in no uncertain terms that Israel is ready for dialogue, that the alternative – endless jihad – is unthinkable”.
It almost makes you feel sorry for Bush. He’s always been convinced that it was the loss of Jewish support that finished off his father in ‘92, after Bush Sr had publicly attacked the Lobby. He vowed never to suffer the same fate, whatever it took. Now this, after all he’s done for them.
Will Bush bomb Teheran? I’ve never thought so. You know the arguments. The US Army is dead against. A US attack on Iran might prompt Muqtada al-Sadr to lead a Shi’a uprising that would sever US supply lines from Kuwait. The US forces in Iraq might have to flee north into Kurdistan or bunker down in their desert bases. But now well informed fellows in Washington say that an attack might well be in the offing. The War on Terror is the only card the Bush crowd has ever had that worked for them, and the only riposte from the Democrats is that they could play the same card better.
Though president Bush has now plummeted so far in public esteem that he appears to be deep, deep down in some well, the only reason we can see the top of his head is that he’s standing on the shoulders of some Democrat. By all rights the Democrats should be making their way to straight for the midterm elections with a light heart. Here we are at the end of six years of oppressive, often lethal mismanagement of the nation’s affairs. I shall not rehearse the milemarkers on this road to ruin. You know them well. But when the crowds lend an ear to what the Democrats are pledging, it turns the Bush-Cheney mix. . .
http://www.counterpunch.org
Problems with your car alarm Travis? Mine goes off from time to time when I’m trying to stuff my keys into my pocket and somehow manage to press a button by mistake. Then I fumble around with the remote frantically trying to turn the damn thing off. So embarrassing!
If Bush bombs Teheran or any place in Iran he’ll be making yet another terrible mistake. What are we trying to do over there anyway? Trying to make everyone in the Middle East hate us?
I heard that it was extremely rare for a sting from a stingray to kill you. The barb got him in the heart, which probably stopped as a result of the venom. I am in shock about the whole thing. Steve Irwin was such a character.
Power politics. The US is most powerful in the realm of violence. What we say goes. Did you notice that Cockburn believes that most Democrats will not step up to stop the criminals-in-charge?
Yeah they say he is shown in video removing the barb from his chest. Perhaps that wasn’t a smart thing to do. But maybe a natural reaction. It may just be that if he’d left the barb in his body and let the doctors remove it he’d have survived. But this is speculation from someone (me) who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Some observers claim to see no major difference between the Democrats and the Republicans, especially in foreign policy. Check out what the two likely candidates for president in ’08 say about the recent war between Israel and Lebanon:
‘I want us here in New York to imagine, if extremist terrorists were launching rocket attacks across the Mexican or Canadian border, would west stand by or would we defend America against these attacks from extremists?.. We will support [Israel’s] efforts to send a message to Hamas, Hezbollah, to the Syrians, to the Iranians… They do not believe in human rights, they do not believe in democracy. They are totalitarians, they are the new totalitarians of the 21st century.’
Hillary Clinton
‘What would we do if somebody came across our borders and killed our soldiers and captured our soldiers? Do you think we would be exercising total restraint?.. Israel has neighbors on its borders that are bent on its extinction.’
McCain
(I pulled this from the Cockburn article posted above.)
Democrat leaders are spineless. At least most of em. I about :barf: ed watching the debate between Rick Santorum and his Democrat challenger on Meet the press on Sunday. Why don’t Dems have a little fighting spirit? Point out our open borders and the lack of security at our ports. Point out that the Rethugs have been in power for the last six years. They’ve had all the power and look what a mess Bush has made of it all. Fucking Republicans. If their re-elected then we’re all fucked.
Who wants to bet that the video of Steve’s last moments gets bootlegged as some sort of snuff film curio. I predict.
:omg: totalitarians! There’s Bush’s favorite word. Ha Ha, that ignorant f’er. And I thought I had a speech impediment.
A rather deadly message, Hillary. Don’t you think?
Alexander Cockburn’s maxim:
[T]he greater the hunger for change, the more thunderous the popular cries for decisive, radical action, the more rapid will be the puncturing of all hopes, as though the whole point of the electoral exercise, of 1964 and 1966 in the case of [Edwin] Wilson, and of 1992 in Clinton’s, had been to demonstrate to those foolish enough to have thought otherwise the lesson that all hopes and fierce expectations notwithstanding, business will continue as usual.
AOL was touting they had Irwin’s last minutes on film but they don’t…it’s a sick gimmick….it will only be seen by police and family another site said. I’m relieved.
The stingray “cracked” his tail like a whip to launch it’s poison barb into Irwin’s chest.
Why do you think the Dems lost the last election, Nicki? National Security, right? If the Dems give the impression that they’re weak in that field, then it’s over.
I mean, I dunno. Cut and paste something for me.
Howdy, bloggren. I’m popping in to apologize for being gone. It was the weekend, and I wanted to get out and enjoy the last throes of summer while I could. I did manage to hike an impressive five miles in one day (some of the more hardcore hikers…or the firmcore hikers for that matter…might think that’s nothing but for me it’s a major accomplishment.) It was glorious and pictures can be found on my flickr site (which if I think hard about it I’ll remember how to get to.)
According to what I heard yesterday, Irwin didn’t stand a chance, even if he had waited to let a surgeon remove the barb. Stingrays produce venom and that close to his heart it was gonna kill him no matter what.
That said, how much do you want to bet the runaway administration uses the poor man’s death as a smokescreen to pull some other stunt? I feel so sorry for his wife, who will now have to endure more public posturing about Irwin than she probably is prepare to handle.
Why are they still touting Hillary as a presidential candidate? Fnorkers!
Why is the media touting McCain? I doubt it will be him.
I mean for the Repub. pres. nomination.
Re 120:
I share your relief at only private viewing of the demise of the Crocodile Hunter. On the other hand, there is no guarantee that the foorage will not get bootlegged and distributed.
I think the point is that it does not matter who the candidates for president are, as they are both reading from the same sheet.

Nobody is blogging! :omg: Okay. You are waiting for me to leave.
Just listening to Randi . . . Nicki . . . and being lazy. Run out of things to say.
So I hear CBS News will also feature new theme music on tonights broadcast. Katie’s debut. I think I’ll tune in just to see the changes. I prefer ABC Network News and I watch lots of CNN. Hardly ever watch MSNBC. But I do like Keith Oberman and sometimes Chris Matthews on Hardball. Fav all around is Jack Cafferty of CNN. Give em hell Jack.
I absolutely hate the Larry King Show. But I don’t like Ophra Winfrey either so . . .
I get sick of these so-called experts and self-help shows on the tv. :barf:
I think I’ll record the opening of CBS News tonight and offer up the first few minutes on my video clip page later tonight just for the helluvit.
Wonder if Randi will bust a gut once clipped to three hours? I donno how that woman does it! Talk, talk, talk . . .
Music on AAR commercial sounds like the “Jetsons” theme.
“Meet George Jetson, daughter Judy, Jane his wife, his boy Elroy. (ding ding ding ding ding ding, doo wha da doo dah, ta ta)
Or have I got that all turned around wrong?
I am sadly now forbidden to watch CBS Evening News. Diabetes runs in my family and Katie Couric is a danger to my insulin level.
CBS ought to offer up their network news in HD. That would prolly help em out with ratings. I wonder why the networks are so slow to do this? O well . . . I’m just bs-ing.
“On the road” by Jack Kerouac, published today in 1957.:peace:
I hear ya Gypsy. But I’m of the curious sort and would have a hard time not just looking in on it for the first time. I doubt I’d by swayed by Katie. Know I would not be wooed by her. :rofl2:
“On the Road” is a novel that makes the reader want to go out there, seize the day, and live, live, live! Jack Kerouac, creator of the “beat generation” best sums up his philosophy as “everything belongs to me because i am poor”. The failure of ideology and of the American Dream in the 1960s gave young dreamers who were eager to live just one way out: the road.
Kerouac presents Sal Paradise, a young and innocent writer, and Dean Moriarty, a crazy youth “tremendously excited with life” racing around America, and testing the limits of the American Dream. Their journeys consist of scenes of rural wilderness, sleepy small towns, urban jungles, endless deserts-all linked by the road, the outlet of a generation’s desire and inner need to get out, break its confinement, and find freedom, liberated from any higher belief, notion, or ideology. The desperation and the lack of fulfillment made these youths feel that “the only thing to do was go”, searching for their personal freedom, and finding pleasure in sex, drugs, and jazz.
I googled it Trav . . .
Cnick, one of my cousins is a reporter for WCBS in New York. I’m hating that if I want to see his work (I have to download it here on the wet coast) it’ll no longer be from the network of Cronkite and Rather but is instead from the cutesie froo-froo network.
Well, Florida is now one vote closer to electing Jim Davis as its next governor.
Sadly, it’s also about an hour away from Katherine Harris being the Repig nominee for Senate.
If the three mental midgets running against her would have pooled their efforts and chosen only one to oppose her, they very well may have pulled it off. Drawing straws, cutting cards, hell, rock paper scissors would have been fine. BUT NO. They all had to flex their egos.
Now I have to vote for DINO Bill Nelson in November to keep this Christo-fascist shrew out of the Senate. Aaaargh.
So did AAR cave on Malloy yet?
HDTV sets will have a 30 percent penetration level in US TV households. … representing more than 30 percent of US TV homes by the end of 2006. …
With only maybe 1% of those homes watching the news on a nightly basis there is no market for HDTV in the news room.
The upper 10% of the wage earners are the only people who will be able to afford to buy HDTV in five years or so.:yuck::paranoid:
When they switch over in 2009 there will be few people able to watch it.:jason::jason::jason:
I’m not rich and I have a 42 inch plasma and a HD decoder box for my Apple Imac computer. But I am also impulsive in my purchasing habits! I think I need a financial manager. Quick, while I still have a little money left in the bank!
2009 is digital, not Hi Def.
Walter Cronkite announced Katie’s debut to the CBS News tonight. Said Cronkite: “This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.”
Never fear Cnick when they change over to broadcast HDTV they will change the specs and you will have to buy a decoder box for the decoder box for the cable box and run the TV off of 12 volt lantern batteries. 😮
Then you can enjoy 200 channels of :crap::crap::crap::crap:
No Fred . . . by that time I won’t have any money left in my bank account.
HDTV is already in digital format over the cable so I would think you should get both HDTV and digital TV in the same roll out.
They supposedly sell converter boxes for about the price of an analog TV to convert the HDTV off the cable to analog so the other 70% of the house holds can watch it. ..:yuck::crap:
No, over-the-air is required to be digital in 2009. So, if you don’t get your signal from the cable company or satellite (that is, you only watch via the airwaves), you’ll need to get a decoder to convert the digital signal they’ll be broadcasting into analog.
I think I figured Rhodes out ..she must assume she only has 1% of her “huge” audience listening every day so if she repeats everything 1000 times most of her audience will hear it at least 10 times. ( assuming they haven’t gone completely crazy by then ) :yuck::yuck::eek::crap::paranoid:
The lady next door has Verizon digital cable and a flat panel HDTV and two analog TV’s . She has a cable decoder box on her end of the cable and off that there is a cable that goes directly to her HDTV. There is another decoder box of the same type as for the HDTV for each analog TV and then there is a scan converter/format converter box and another cable box then it goes to her analog TV .. I guess they don’t package it all in one box or something. She pays like 110 a month for her basic cable and all her interface boxes plus another 50 for her Internet service. . She watches about six shows a day for that price. 😮
I sure do miss Druid!
So episode 1 of the Katie Show is in the can. Thoughts:
The new music isn’t as irritating as the old theme, which used to blast me out of bed at 4:57 in the morning if I had the volume on too loud the night before.
Cronkite announcing the show open was cute. As long as it’s a one-night thing only, cuz it made me miss Unca Walter, who can still probably do this shit better in his sleep than most others do it awake.
Tom Friedman drives me nuts, because I agree with him often enough to sort of respect his opinion, and disagree with him often enough that it irritates me more when he is wrong. He was right tonight. But if we’re going to tap into NYT columnists, howza bout Krugman, Dowd and Rich. (Dowd as long as she doesn’t dish about men.)
The “Free Speech” segment sounds OK in theory, but I don’t see the point of bringing someone like Rush Limbaugh on to speak. Not because he’s a rightie, but he HAS a broadcast outlet. Better to use the time on someone who needs an opportunity to voice their opinion on a national basis.
Like Mike Malloy. 😀
I could have lived without the Tomkitten pix, but for CBS not to show them would, of course, have been oppressive and glib.
Overall nothing really to write home about. I’ll probably stick with it through the rest of the week just as a curiosity, but give me Jim Lehrer any day. Although Katie does have better legs. :hubba:
Wow, that’s too damn much to pay. Hell, I pay too much. I can see the benefit of HD for movies or sports, but not for many other things. I read where they thought it would be a big deal for porn, but it turns out that all those things that we human beings have on our bodies are not necessarily appealing at high resolution. Even for regular movies, I guess that the typical makeup job that works for “regular” resolution winds up looking stupid and pathetic in hi-def (think heavy pancake and all that kinda stuff). Supposedly, Cameron Diaz’s acne scarslook pretty bad in HD.
Yeah, where has Druid been, anyway? I hope all is well.
What’s Katie going to do to steal the headlines? Spit out those walnuts that’s she’s been storing in her cheeks? What a Moron Nation.
I must admit that I like watching the news chicks on BBC, who seem to have IQ’s over 99, but they’re only freaking news readers; they don’t pretend to be journalists like these worthless suits do.
If ABC airs that 9-11 attack on Clinton, Dems should work to make the ESPN football game up against it the highest rated game since the Superbowl.
Gee, I’m not used to listening to AAR in realtime anymore. Nice of Sam to debunk the ABC movie, but unfortunately once everybody sees it on the teevee, it becomes fact. Remember the shitfit they had about the Ronny Rayguns movie – so much that it got pulled? Never happen with this one.
Hi Tom!
I have the opening of tonight’s CBS Evening News on my video clip page. Go here. No endorsement intended. I’m just a curious person. I prefer ABC for Network News. But I miss it much of the time cause I’m usually here listening to you people.
I heard on NPR today that Katie wanted a “lighter” news show. I reckon that sums it all up. I didn’t watch the CBS Evening News before, and Katie Colonic sure as hell aint gonna get me to start.
25 to tie with King Kong. Doubt I’ll make it tonight though.
Re 157 last paragraph: Never seen Jim Lehrer’s legs so I can’t say. Yup I guess if you like chicks Katie has a nice pair of legs. I’ve been complimented on my legs, but I think their to skinny . . . so.
My economy is not out of the tank.
Sam is so funny! Smart too. You go Sam!
Wonder if I’d get into trouble if I posted instructions for making a shit bomb on the internet? Hint: It’s a little like a water balloon, but a little chunkier. Unless your stomach is upset when you make it. Nasty!
“Nova” on PBS at 7:00 (CT). A show titled: “Building on ground zero” details some of the structural reasons for the collapse of the WTC buildings. 56 minutes in HD. It’ll be interesting to hear what these experts have to say about the collapse since there are many conspiracy therories out there.
😡 Trying to set up a Shoutcast server on my linux box, and it’s messing with me. It’s either RTFM, or have a beer. I think I’ll go with the beer.
:pent:
So what?
I mean, what do you mean?
Are you calling me a heathen?
PBS’s “Nova” will present a story on Katrina’s effect on New Orleans next week entitled: ” The Storm that drowned a city.” Should be interesting. Tonight’s show was good. So I never really did buy into theories the WTC Towers were brought down by explosives hidden in the building and set off after the impact of the planes.
But maybe I’m just gullible.
Okay what did I miss on Majority Report? Hmm . . . o well.
Ha! Some how they airbrushed those nuts out!
Hey, nice to see NCBlue in the house! like the definition of woman.
comments to add to Kev’s:
watched CBS news and I thought she handled it well – was herself. Mr. FK said to never underestimate her, people usually make that mistake at their peril. He has a lot of respect for her and started working with her when she was very low on the totem pole at chicken noodle news. So she had serious stuff the first 1/2 to 2/3 and then fluff. At least the goofy lara logan had a lengthy story – which i like (the longer story, not so much that goof ball, but that’s MY opinion) (Couldn’t watch the Friedman inteview :barf: and muted the chimp in chief.)
Also, I personally noticed Brian Williams kissed Limpdick’s behind when he first took over Nightly and what did ms couric do? Mentioned the jerk on tonight’s newscast (teased that he’ll be on Thursday). Must be de rigeur for success. Isn’t THAT a sad state of affairs? Anyway, I thought she played the thing smart inviting all kinds of participation from the audience and not committing to how she would sign off. I hope she does well because I’m tired of it being a man’s territory, frankly.
And really, how serious can a 30 minute news show be anyway? blip blip blip
Travis are you still ruining the blog with you’re one liners? he he. Just kidding. Where is sblue Trav. You wear her out at the festival today?
:yawn::nod:
Back from the road and the ferry. Where’s the remote?:jason:
Katie’s on…
Day was..good, though:lol:
Except how I almost turned into oncoming traffic getting off of the ferry:omg:
Mr. Crowley
Four to go, well now three and I’ll catch up with King Kong.
I wish Druid would make an appearence tonight.
Maybe I’ll call her.
Tied! Woo Hoo
cnick i made a big mistake with King kong by not waving when I went by-just a little tip:nod:
Everyone leaves now?
my shift key stopped working 😥
so I got in too late for katie. she always bugged me anyway.
America is an Oligarchy
Stephen Fleischman:

Okay, fuck. I need to see this NOVA tonight and it starts in 5 minutes and I’m at the library.
So this is a drive by. Hey everyone, Cox Suckers fucked up my internet so I* am going with Qwest. They are the only ones who didn’t succumb to the NSA snooping and I am not giving anymore money to a co9rporation that causes me to have a temper tantrum! 😡 Plus my doggie isn’t around to check my temper and I miss her terribly! 🙁
So I am going to race home to watch NOVA and I’ll check in tomorrow. :jesus:
Some dickweed called in Jon Elliot and said that Malloy did a disservice by ranting too hard and creating divisiveness whereas he should have sought common ground with the conservatives. Elliot did not say a word in response. Errrgrrr.
Hey, it’s eleven. Does that mean Druid is out there somewhere?
