I haven’t looked at the national election results from last night, but there weren’t any surprises here in NYS. I’m really interested to see how the RI US Senate Republican primary went (hey, any race that’s Laffey v. Chaffee has to be a good one). If Chaffee lost, it’s a real good chance for the Dems to pick up that seat, since Laffey is an all but unelectable wingnut.
The good news is that I’ve once again missed the cut for Jury Duty, but they’re starting to get awfully close to my number, and I don’t know if I’ll survive another round. Sounds like they’ve got three jury trials to seat, so I hope today’s crop works out. The bad news, of course, is that today’s Wednesday, and I have to go to class. Better than JD, to be sure, and this is one of the few courses that I actually feel will do me some good. Still, I’d feel remiss if I didn’t at least whine about it a little bit.
Anyway, I guess I’ll see if the dog can talk me into taking him out to the park before class this afternoon. There’s only so much of his pitiful pleading eyes I can take. See ya.

Chaffee won in RI.. They say he is a “liberal” rethug.. does that mean he would only agree to saturation bombing of Iran with cluster bombs instead of nukes or what ??:yuck::yuck::paranoid:
I haven’t seen any other primary results, I take it that Hillary won in NY :crap: How did Tasini do ??:eek::rant1:

Well on the other hand, when Hillary gets 83% it means extra anti-depressives for the Ditto Heads. She wasn’t going to lose anyway, so what the hell…
Chafee’s victory is a bad bell weather for the Dems.

“In the New York race, Mrs. Clinton’s landslide carried its own broader significance. By performing strongly among a liberal, antiwar primary electorate, she showed that her vote for military action in Iraq in 2002 did not damage her political standing as it did with Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut, who lost his bid for re-nomination last month to an antiwar candidate, Ned Lamont.
Mrs. Clinton’s little-known opponent in New York, a union organizer named Jonathan Tasini, tried to tap into voter anger over Iraq, yet he had little money and did not effectively turn the race into a message-sending moment about the war.”
Chafee’s victory is a bad bell weather for the Dems.

In terms of not picking up a seat, true dat. But it could be worse. As Repigs go, there is a gulf of difference between Chafee and Santorum or Frist. At least Chafee gives the Dems a listener across the aisle on many issues.
So what happens to Riley when the Young Turks invade next week? Is he allowed to say? Does anyone care?
Someone indicated that Riley had signed a contract with WLIB to be the morning drive guy.:yuck::eek:
http://www.mydd.com lists all the election stats…
I would say it is not so much what happens if the dems win the house but what happens if they don’t win the house. In addition what happens if they retake the house and nothing happens.:gate::omg::gate::omg::gate::omg::jason::jason::jason::jason:( insert emo of tree trimming truck)
I think that over the last 6 years the country has seen that the system is broken. The people in the ivory towers don’t see that but the people do and don’t know what to do about it because they are isolated and not organized . They find they can not organize inside of existing demodorp or rethugs political structures so they will choose to go other routes..They know a third party would be ineffective and take to long to effect the required changes. Perhaps they will do as the Iraqi’s do.. :yuck::eek::eek::eek:
When the Young Turks take over morning drive next week they will have to put a cut out of Jill in her chair .. I don’t get the impression she is a morning person.:shock::paranoid:
Hillary is the “desired candidate” for the thugs in 08. There plan of attack is already to go just like the patriot act was on Sept,. 12 th …. :gate::omg::gate::omg::jason::jason::jason::fist::fist::fist:
Jill is TERRIBLE. I thought Stephanie Miller sounded like a ditz but Jill from Young Turks … well put it this way, she’s worse…
I haven’t quite figured out the use of the :bf: symbol .. Does :bf::40: mean No drink and :bf::crap: mean No shit or does Sun’s Java turn the symbol into something more palatable than it really is. :?::?:
I’m still angry at all the so-called liberals in NY who would support a pro-war candidate like the “wildly popular” Hillary
The young Turks make Shultz and Marvin look really communist by comparison. They will go over like a lead Hindenburg and AAR will crash and burn. :yuck::yuck::eek::eek::crap::crap::paranoid::paranoid:
I take it to mean “dirty thought” or “censored thought”
I dunno, I got the feeling they’re really popular and would appeal to a broad, youthful audience. They tap into pop culture pretty good and and are very chatty and that goes over well at least here in NY – real liberals might be upset but that’s not the biggest audience that listens to radio anyway…
Like they say the “typical” American comprehends at the 8th grade level and the more candy you give them the fatter and happier they are .The system will only work with a “well informed ” electorate .. We have a poorly educated and misinformed ( even it they did pay attention to the news) electorate, Maybe the initial idea of only letting the elite vote was better than our lefty talkers would have us believe.:eek::yuck::crap::paranoid::paranoid:
I think 8th grade level is pushing it…NY TImes for instance is written on a 6th grade level and that’s one of the more “intellectual” papers, haha. 5th or 6th grade level is a more realistic expectation for the average American adult
My heart bleeds for you guys suffering through the Young Turks. Me, I get Sammy and Armie here in liberal NY. Lucky me.
Remember how AAR management kept pushing Mark Green on Marc and Mark? After his blowout loss to Cuomo last night, i hope we’re heard the last of Green. Apparently, a thoroughly nasty man that no one [except the NY Times!] likes. Maybe it will start to sink in. Doubt it tho.
Typically the over 30 crowd are those who can find time between the four hours of commuting, the eight hours of work and all night at the club/ disco to vote .:eek::crap::yuck::fustrate::fustrate:
That’s because they no longer spend the night at the club/disco.. They need the sleep at that age. 😮
I am watching C-span in the mornings these days. I will go over and listen to Marvin pretty soon or just turn off the noise entirely. 😮
I would like to put the entire congress in a room and surround them with thirty masked people in sweat shits and ski masks with assault rifles and then have someone ask them questions and when they give a “politically motivated ” answer have the gun people all fire their rifles into the air. Maybe that would scare the :crap: out of them enough that they will either :crap: or get off the pot. :growl::growl::gate::omg::gate::omg::jason::jason::jason::fist::fist:
there would be a lot of bullets flying since politicians VERY often give politically-motivated answers….
I think that the :bf: has the banana and his little friend behind it….aka censorship!!!!
I thought that Riley was gonna do 5-6 …? But I also heard that he was staying ar LIB, because he has been there for so long.
I guess I will be getting the Young Turks because I cant get 1600 up here…doesnt seem to be much that I want to put up an antenna for, considering that I can stream. Its only a drag in the car…just when Sam is gonna be on during my peak driving time.
I wonder if its possible to lose The Predictor when we move to the evening slot….and maybe Dr Maddow too….its all so goofy….
that’s my solution also, Melina. Most of the time when I listen I’m streaming. If I made a lot of long car trips I’d think about replacing the antenna but as it is now I only use it for 15-minute trips to work and shopping. Can’t get 1600 either
a lot of his routines are realllly corny (and not in a good sense)
Well, while I voted for Tasini, he really had no chance. And the wingnut Replublican that won (John Spencer) the “right” to challenge her “…questioned Clinton’s patriotism for criticizing the Patriot Act and launched a television ad that paired her image with that of terrorist Osama bin Laden.” So, we’ll see how that works for him. I reckon it’ll be Howie Hawkins for me come November (unless Spencer is somehow a less pathetic candidate than it would appear he’ll be).
On the bright side, the Democrat running against our Bush buddy Congreesman – Dan Maffei – won the Working Families Party primary here, so he’ll be on two lines, which can’t hurt. The NY-25th is hopefully one that will be a pickup, but it isn’t goign to be easy. The NY-24th (our neighbor) is also a good chance, as encumbent Republican (and not all that bad, for a Republican) Sherwood Boehlert is retiring. So hopefully Mike Arcuri can pull that one out.
:bf: = butt f**k
:bf: well, if it’s censorship, I feel partly responsible. If the banana on the bottom looked like he/she/it wasn’t getting raped, I would not have voted against it. BUT Once KP had a new interpretation for it, I could have lived with it. So There.
we have been having a heavenly rain here – steady all night. We need rain so it’s more than welcome. dorks aren’t happy about it, though.
aar is the worst at letting their listeners know what is going on. do they fly by the seat of their pants so advance notice is impossible? If they can afford the turks, I’m sure they could have afforded maron/earl if they had wanted, don’t you?
Kent needs someone else to temper him…someone a little dark. Thats what I dont like about him as much as someone like Jim or Marc…the dysfunctional darkness. he reminds me of the Prarie Home Companion or something…they both do actually….
I have to ipod anyway, so since I dont listen at night I usually have a MR, Al Franken show, and often a Rachel….and then there is always all the other stuff like the NYTimes select podcasts, which cut down on my reading time.
Actually, it’s Banana Frolicking.
Was anyone streaming last night when the Catholic radio program came on ?? I hope they got it fixed by this morning that was very unnerving.:eek::paranoid:
Kent and Rachael are “nice” together and that ain’t a compliment. Blasé
If you run your mouse over :bf: you get bf
If they can afford the turks, I’m sure they could have afforded maron/earl if they had wanted, don’t you?
Oh sure…but Young Turks (they think) would appeal to a broader audience…
Maybe…Its a big step up for the Turks, and they might have made a good deal for a year or so just to get a foot in the door at broadcast radio. I guess that even if the future of all media is on the computer, the podcasters all want to get on “real” radio…..
Its still looked at as a step up…..and considering they they are a small indy show, they’ve done well….
I think that marc probably needed $200,000 per year at least plus expenses for travel etc….Thats like the money that most of these CEO types use to rent a summer house in the hamptons for a month or two, so it shouldnt have been a problem…I cant believe that Jim would be much more. They definitley could have afforded it.
I miss Marc on the air so much, but Im glad that hes done with these jokers. I just hope that hes thinking about radio and not realizing how nice it is to not have the pressure of a daily show.
Banana Frolicking => well THAT sounds fun!
speaking of frolicking, keep fingers crossed, mr fk and i are trying to arrange a rendez-vous so he can take a break without coming all the way home – he’ll be there until the first of nov.
Well, in true AAR fashion, they have rounded up all the Springerite types of older people, and people who dont know all that much abotu what is going on, and now they are gonna just throw this young show in their face…..I dont think they should focus so much on their youth.
Kent and Rachael are “nice” together and that ain’t a compliment.
It’s hard to believe this is the same guy who was (the very funny) Lawton Smalls.
The First of Nov??? That is so long!! Does he then get the holidays off?
turkey day here christmas trees there.
Lawton Smalls is only as funny as who he is talking to….less funny talking to Mark Riley or Rachel, Im sure…..
The whole funny thing only works in the atmosphere of the whole thing…..Marc had the whole gang involved and there seemingly wasnt any uncomfortable moments or whatever….everyone was in sync, and Marc was the ringleader….unless it all only happened because Riley anchored it…..um…nah!
Rachel just seems so uncomfortable with this setup. She did so much better with Lizz doing the goofy and her doing the intelligent.
They are taking only 2 days to plan the new show…will have fillin hosts for Th and Fri….so I doubt things will be much different. Even Riley took a week!
re #38 i saw on rachael’s blog (i was looking for line-up info) someone opined it was hijacked by the freepers or some such idiots.
Ugh!! Kat!! Thats so hard….Maybe you should book Cancun for you and the kids (Im there 16th-23rd) and meet me there for even just part of the time. They have a great new teen area….
The Turks are probably a syndicated program so AAR pays them some fee plus some adder per radio station that carries them. A large number of AAR’s affiliates have a morning program of their own at that time of day. There are even more that have their own programming on between 9 and 12.:eek::paranoid:
will riley be back?
Lawton Smalls is only as funny as who he is talking to
i realized how much stronger riley was with maron, too, while listening to sedition radio yesterday. maron is a magnet – an unusual personality.
I couldnt believe that so many of the ding dongs who commented on Mr FK’s blog post were saying that HE should be in Afghanistan….as if he decides where the army goes or what gets aired….its so missing the point. I cant imagine how he can be patient enough to even want to give anyone information anymore.
true Kent as Lawton played off of who he was with and that made it work (plus the writing was just really good). With Rachel he is so not funny, he’s the anti-funny.
yes, it is not gettting easier, melina.
My God yes…when you see him do his comedy thing on stage…he is just so good and seamless. He is so quick on his feet and he draws people in from the audience, even if they dont know him.
The other guy who was arguably more “famous” used strange faces, like Barney Fife when he got to these uncomfortable moments…or started picking on people in the audience in a mean way.
He was also so together and magnetic on the TV show. I would die if I had to stand up there and know that 30 million people were gonna see me. He seems to work his worry and pathos into his comedy…and there seems to be something that everyone can relate to, even if they are not as dysfunctional and dark as say someone like….er…me!
What ever programming AAR carries it has to fit into the must pay for itself and make a profit at around 1600 dollars an hour ( 20 commercials at $80 per spot). That’s not much when you consider how many people behind the scenes are involved along with renting space and paying the utilities in NYC. I still think they need to move to North Platte.:eek::paranoid:
people don’t get it. i know he responded to a couple folks who said they have family over in iraq – had some nice correspondence with them. he tries to ignore the nut-jobs.
===
With Rachel he is so not funny, he’s the anti-funny.
exactly.
Well, I thought Rachel made a good newsreader, and was pretty good at showing Lizz how to do radio (like, in Left of the Dial). But unless she’s been holding something back, I just can’t see her being abig hit in primetime (nor is she worth suffering through the horrible streaming muzak they play during commercials, and I don’t see taking the time to record the show, either). Sam is good in any time slot, I think.
Well, next time I go to see Marc, I will either not sit three inches from him, or will not order twenty-three plates of food to be delivered in the middle of his set. 😳
Really? If you have any Israeli stamp you cant get into ANY Arab country? Wow! I guess that makes sense….and the jews I know here who spend every summer in Israel would never go to an arab country.
Well, if you want to come to Cancun and hang with me, that would be great…..Im not someone who makes any huge plans or does much sightseeing or anything…just gonna hang…maybe try to kayak (which is in the package) and ride horses, if its available and not too expensive.
Damn…Dancing with the Stars is over. Jerry is Back….
Well, I think I say “well” too much. I need to work on that. Must be something to do with being college age during Reagan or something.
Hey! I say Hey all the time…I have all sorts of exclamations that I say….
I liked Rachel even after Liz left when she had a one-hour morning show. It was very condensed and somehow she worked well with it. I also thought she took more risks in what she talked about at that time.
and I use in writing…I think its good because it makes writing more like talking…as long as youre not saying You KNow all the time
well, i don’t know of any that will let you in with the stamp other than Jordan, but am not 100% sure of ALL of them. I know absolutely Lebanon will not….was told to never let the israelis stamp the passport, but the guy stamped it even though i asked him not to. :rant1:
thanks for the invite!
Ciao!
sure…check it out and if you want to, then feel free….I could maybe upgrade to a suite also for some of the days if they let you switch around….Im not sure if its more expensive if you go solo as opposed to as two people…though I would expect not because they market club meds as also good for singles….
Having Rachel on live so early in the morning on these station in the west certainly didn’t get her much of an audience. I have to wonder it AAR has to look only at there ratings in NYC when they make these programming considerations. I guess if its talk radio you need to be on when people want to talk but Rachel never did talk radio. :paranoid::fustrate:
I would watch the news from south of the border before going to Mexico these days..Being in the middle of a revolution might be interesting for about 10 minutes.:eek::paranoid:
can anyone get This trailer? I cant seem to run it.
Its for the Al franken movie
I think that they judge by NYC…dont they?
Isnt that why the flagship station was so important?
missing some quicktime thingie “Unfortunately the add on is not available on the quicktime website”. Gee, thanks.
The trailer works fine for me (in FireFox).
I get a green screen but that is pretty normal when I play videos :crap::fustrate::paranoid:
I need to upgrade my version of OS on my old iMac so I can start getting some of these upgrades and newer programs 😐
NYC is the largest market, so it’s important in that sense (highest advertising rates and all that), but all the markets you’re airing in are important. That’s why the Rushmeister is so huge – he’s on in like 600 markets.
I was able to get Al Franken’s trailer once I installed the free QuickTime upgrade. I have Windows XP.
The secret on this computer is to :paranoid:run the Dxdiagnostic , have it get a runtime error then it works fine after that…
If you are interested in Java programming Sun has their single user development tools along with a windows IDE available for free.. here..

Good Morning :joe: Thank god my boss called last night and asked if I wanted the day off. I jumped at it.

From CQ’s update this morning.
Minneapolis Voters Make Ellison Congress’ First Muslim Member
By Libby George | 1:54 AM; Sep. 13, 2006
Democrats in Minnesota’s strongly Democratic 5th Congressional District put history into motion by nominating state Rep. Keith Ellison in Tuesday’s primary — all but guaranteeing that he will become the first Muslim ever elected to Congress.
Ellison’s virtually certain victory in November also would make him the first African-American to represent Minnesota in the 110th Congress, and one of a small handful of black lawmakers who represent districts with sizable white majorities. The 5th, which includes all of Minneapolis and much of its suburbs, has a population that is about 70 percent non-Hispanic white.
The winner of the November election will succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Martin Olav Sabo, who never had a close race over his 14-term career. Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry took 71 percent of the 5th District vote in 2004.
Ellison earned his primary victory in a hard-fought campaign against two other leading contenders — longtime Sabo aide Mike Erlandson, a former state Democratic Party chairman, and former state Sen. Ember Reichgott Junge.
With all precincts reporting in unofficial returns, Ellison took 41 percent to 31 percent for Erlandson and 21 percent for Junge. Minneapolis City Councilman Paul Ostrow ended the race with 5 percent.
Business consultant Alan Fine was unopposed to stage the Republicans’ longshot bid for the seat. Independence Party candidate Tammy Lee and Green Party member Jay Pond also will contend for the seat.
Ellison was established as the front-runner for the Democratic nod in May, when he received the official endorsement of the Democrat-Farmer-Labor Party (as the Democrats have long been known in Minnesota). His bid to make racial political history in the state also drew him an endorsement from the Congressional Black Caucus.
Sabo, though, stood by Erlandson, who chose to pursue the primary bid despite losing the party endorsement vote.
And Ellison had to recover his footing after some early stumbles. He was stung by news reports about a variety of personal problems, including allegations of unpaid parking tickets, late federal income tax payments and failure to file timely campaign finance reports in other elections. Perhaps most damaging were reports linking him to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan after his conversion to the religion as a young man.
But Ellison’s charm and progressive politics are what likely pulled him through, experts say. The 43-year-old state lawmaker has been likened to progressive political icon Paul Wellstone — a comparison that can go a long way in a state that is still mourning the late senator, who died in a plane crash late in his 2002 bid for re-election.
“The margin speaks to the strength of progressives and grass-roots in that district,” said Blois Olson, co-publisher of the newsletter Politics in Minnesota. “He’s been compared to Paul Wellstone . . . I think it was a factor, and I think the people could relate to that.”
Ellison also pushed hard in the final hours of his campaign, meeting with as many voters as possible to spread a message that included advocating withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, universal health care coverage and support for labor issues.
Throughout the race, Ellison focused on those subjects, eschewing a race-based campaign, and vigorously seeking face time with as many voters of all backgrounds as possible.
The tactic clearly worked: more voters showed up for this primary than any other primary in state history. “This is exactly how we planned it,” said Ellison campaign spokesman Dave Colling.
Colling contended the real reason Ellison is able to elicit so much enthusiasm is his willingness to stand up to authority, a trait he said President Bush will soon encounter. “I watched him do it in the state House, and I can’t wait to watch him do it in Congress,” Colling said.
Erlandson, who targeted older voters who usually cast the most ballots in primary elections, finished strong in the suburbs. “We just didn’t have quite enough juice at the end,” said Erlandson campaign spokesman Peter Brickwedde.
CQ rates the race as Safe Democratic. Please visit CQPolitics.com’s Election Forecaster for ratings on all races.

PORTLAND MARONISTI!!!!!

Ol’ Zeb and I are planning to take Amtrak to Seattle on the 30th (because I can’t get Friday off at work) to see Maron at Giggles. Anyone from Portland who wants to join us, EMAIL ME at ms.gyspy@gmail.com. If you post it on the blog the odds are I won’t see it since my blog time is limited. PLEASE EMAIL ME.
If I don’t hear from anyone prior to Friday I’ll assume no one else wants to go with us and we’ll make our own arrangements. If someone has alternate travel arrangements they prefer, I need to know before Friday.
Okay, I’ve stressed that as much as I can.
Malloy was interviewed on my local AAR station this morning.
He talked about his firing, pretty much all the stuff he’s said
before and claimed to have no clue about what caused it or
why it was done so suddenly. He mentioned the Drobney’s
and Sinton as good guys in all this and suggested that the
investors and corporate types didn’t know what they were
doing. He also said he was offered the CEO job at AAR way
back when they were first organizing but that he’d suggested Sinton
instead.
But then he said that some kind of struggle was going on currently for control of AAR. If it was successful, there was a good chance he’d be back on. If not, it was very unlikely he’d return to AAR.
This was at about 6 am and I wasn’t yet fully awake but I was
happy to hear that someone’s fighting the recent dumb ideas
at AAR. It didn’t sound real likely that there would be a coup, yet
the fact that Malloy mentioned it as a possibility gave me some hope.
BREAKING
AAR story from THINKPROGRESS.ORG
WOW!
Thank you “beat around the Bush” for that news.
http://www.thinkprogress.org
Malloy sounded like this shakeup could be a good thing – if
this is what he was referring to.
I’m too pissed to gloat. What a mess they’ve made out of this. Sorry that [the wrong] people are losing their jobs.:sammy:
Hey, now you know what its like to be a Knicks fan!
Hartman was just talking about AAR’s bankruptcy filing and he thought it was just indicative of normal small company start up problems and that progressive radio is not dead and he hopes, thinks, maybe neither is AAR.
Wait until O’liely comes on FAUX tonight though..:yuck::yuck::yuck::eek::eek::eek::barf::barf::barf::paranoid:
hey did you guys see this
? AAR bankruptcy….
What total jerks…because even in bankruptcy they are saying that AAR proved that there is a strong desire for this rogramming and is doing OK. I think that the mistakes of a few have hurt us all…and the movement…and the country…..
But also to corporate climate of broadcasting and what has been nuiltup since the Reagan years and the dismissal of the fiarness docterine have insured that any venture like AAR is gonna have a very hard time and hemmorhage money for years. This isnt a business, its a necessity for our society…and if the government isnt gonna help both sides see light, then the people have to provide it.
Wouldnt they want to win the ratings war fairly? What good is it to have whatever ratings if youre using all kinds of bullshit to crush the competition…so then its not about talent or actually good content, its about who can pull enough shenanigans and control the corporate culture to shut down discourse in America….its so wrong.
Anyway, Im running here, but I wish that AAR had filed this on fucking friday…late, like all smart corproations who dont want to GIVE food to the opposition do….damn…talk about being in a bubble!
oh, I see its been long posted…Its not even up on HuffPo yet, but I hope that she fires off something and maybe we get something out of Drobny or some such….
I’m not sure what to make of this 😉
Wow….lets submit Marc!!!
Lets do a huge campaign for Marc….Imagine how great it would be to have him as the devil’s most promising progressive talk radio star!
The “next Progressive Talk Radio Star” sounds like a reality competition show, like “The Next Food Network Star,” and others of that ilk. It should be on Bravo, and have as host some exec from Clear Channel and the role of “Tim” (Project Runway reference) should be played by Mark Riley (Maron doesn’t have the years and years of experience, Randi’s too big a name these days, but maybe Maddow would be a better choice. Malloy should be one of the regular judges on the panel…) Marc should be a celebrity judge and should be in on the final judging, the one where the two finalists go head-to-head.
The behind the scenes squabbling among contestants ought to make great TV.
Oy! They had such a good idea at AAR and they let it go so very, very south so dramatically.
:smack:
It makes me sick to see The Young Turks taking over morning drive time instead of having Maron in that slot. If they do a restructuring of the board tomorrow which means Mike Malloy comes back then Marc’s decision not to come back was probably wrong. :billcat:
I think, now that I’ve had a chance to reflect, that Janene should be the host of my imaginary show. Sam Seder should be one of the judges, alongside Malloy.
The advisor role is always played by someone with knowledge of the field but not a name himself. At least that’s how it’s been before. Of course, the Food Network and HGTV shows didn’t bother with the advisor role at all.
I’m waiting for a backup to finish so I’m bored at work. Can you tell?
Ok, I did a Google search, “Air America bankruptcy.” Here is a right-wing site you might not wish to look at.
I wonder what XM is going to do.
I can’t say that Marc’s decision to leave was wrong. Under the restructuring, he’d still have to move to New York, the way things were going for him. I want him to find someone who wants to put him on the air in syndication, and then I’m willing to bet a lot of the AAR affiliates would chose to air him instead of some AAR program.
I have to say that I totally approve of AAR cutting ties to Jerry Springer…
I’m in a bad mood now!
I think the biggest error AAR has made is to listen to the suits and not the audience.
BTW that emo for which :bf: now stands might be very appropeiate now.
Cenk Uygur has a big forum to announce his move to AAR in morning drive time
If AAR files for bankruptcy tomorrow and shuffles the board does that mean they have to honor the contracts/decisions made by the ousted board?? strong>
http://www.marcmaron.com is under construction.
Wow, he got his website back. Very cool. GO MARC!!!!!
Gotta go to a lunch meeting. Think kind thoughts of me…:omg:
Sam just posted this over at
http://www.majorityreportradio.com
Ed Shultz is talking about this AAR story right now! Well I missed it my stream tanked! I doubt anyone is talking about this save Sam Seder at AAR. Randi Rhodes is somewhat of a loose canon. She may say something. I’m gonna monitor Ed’s show. See if he says anything else. Sure he’ll get some calls on that. I may wait till tomorrow to do a podcast. I want to follow this.
Marc needs to put a cat under that tree.
Randi just said she will tell us what is happening at AAR at the 4:00 (ET) hour.
Thanks isi, I’ll be listening.
Radio giant Clear Channel is so committed to progressive talk radio that, this week, it will announce a partnership with the Center for American Progress, Jones Radio, and MSS Inc., to conduct a nationwide search for the next Progressive Talk Radio Star.
Comment by Beat around the Bush — September 13, 2006 @ 12:31 pm
With Stephanie Miller doing 9-noon Eastern, and Ed Schultz 3-6, I wonder if Jones might be looking for someone to syndicate in the noon-3 slot if they don’t already have someone. Probably most stations that run those two shows air Franken in between, but depending on when he steps down to start the Senate campaign, that could turn out to be a lucrative slot for somebody.
Maybe Marc? Maron to Schultz at 3 PM would be kind of a tough transition, though. Kinda like a restaurant flipping from vegan to steakhouse every day.
Staff meeting? During the show? WTF does that mean?
Well, Randi is postponing talking about AAR because there is a staff meeting at 4:15 (ET) and she will wait until after the meeting to give an update.
Maybe her producer will be at the meeting.
Kevin, which one is vegan in your example: Marc or Ed?
What’s going to be on while Randi is in the meeting?
:cat:? :pup:? :knit2:?
Maybe the staff meeting will be during the break :rofl2:
We’re waiting Randi? What’s the story?
Latest: Randi will be briefed shortly about the state of AAR
She did say, Why does all the scary stuff happen during my time on the air ?
Okay, totally off the subject but I have to insert some levity to keep our spirits up.
I wish I could insert an image but I’ll have to do the second best thing and link to this picture of Tucker Carlson. Ah, so many snide comments, so little time…..
the Huffington Post now has AAR story posted from ThinkProgress.com
Ok Randi! What’s the scoop?
So how much longer are we gonna have to wait? Goddamn Randi. Tell us what you know already!
Some of us will have to wait longer than others to find out what’s going on. Would someone PLEASE post it as soon as Randi’s says something? Thanks ever so….
Somebody call Randi Rhodes and ask her WTF is going on over there.
forwarded from the Mike Malloy fansite on MySpace:
I’m pasting this from Malloy’s board. Not long before they shut down White Rose too. DOWNLOAD ALL OF MALLOY’S OLD SHOWS WHILE YOU CAN!!!!!!

I have been ordered by the attorneys at Air America Radio to shut down this site. I am going to keep an eye on that other site archiving the Randi Rhodes Show and see if he has to take her off his site as well. If he does, then I will be offline for good. If he is allowed to continue his site, then I will resurrect this one. Thank you for more than THREE YEARS of support. We were around before Air America was a load in Sheldon Drobny’s pants. We helped bring Randi to you and to the world when she was just a local host on a medium sized South Florida radio station. Apparently helping get her name out to people, and her becoming the STAR of Liberal Radio was only good until they figured out how to make money from her archived shows. So this week will be the final week of this archive. It was a great run while it lasted. First malloy, now us. We’re fired.

Stop on by Randi’s Official Website at http://www.TheRandiRhodesShow.com or email Randi directly by clicking here.
I thought this deserved it own thread. You guys know what other archiving site he is talking about, dont you. [/quo
So she said she was gonna tell us. Then delayed the announcement till after the staff meeting. So alright already! We’re dying out here Randi. Won’t you please tell us something? I’d like a little good news. But we over here at the morningseditionist blog are used to being f*ed. It’s happened to us twice. Canceling of Morning Sedition and then the cancelation of Marc Maron Show. So are we gonna be left with anything?
Each other, cnick, we’re left with each other.
Sorry. Sentimentalism isn’t REALLY in my nature…
don’t worry, all these people who are fired from AAA will come running to us at Morning Seditionists radio… :omg:
ok, really bad graveyard humor – I actually don’t know what is going on and I’m on the edge of my seat too…
Let’s get real Susan Joy. I know you don’t really believe that. People have to make a living. They want and need $$$ for their time.
So maybe Randi has been told by AAR attorney’s not to say anything.
Excuse 136. I’m just in such a shitty mood right now. These f*ing assholes at Air America and their bloated salaries. Al Franken making close to 2 million dollars a year. WTF was up with that. I cannot imagine a bankruptcy judge that would allow for such a salary like Al’s while Air America is in bankrupcy Chapter 11.
Yes, like I said it was a joke…would rather joke than cry I guess
So is Randi live at the moment or is her program a rerun ??. :paranoid:
it sounds like a live show
I don’t think the bankruptcy judge has any say over salaries, although I’m sure there is a way the creditors can give their input. But I’m not a lawyer. Nor do I appear on “Boston Legal” in any capacity.
So Randi instead of playing Chris Matthews Hardball episode why don’t you tell us what is going on at AAR?
this is an update from the Think Progress site (that originally reported the bankruptcy:
UPDATE: Air America responds.
If Air America had filed for bankruptcy every time someone rumored it to be doing so, we would have ceased to exist long ago; it may be frustrating to some that this hasn’t happened. No decision has been taken to make any filing of any kind, we are not sure of the source of these rumors and frankly can not respond to every rumor in the marketplace.

(looks at identical post) jinx!
Maybe Bill O’liely started the rumor or the creditors immediately took a :crap: so AAR is denying it.
Cut and paste is a wonderful tool..You can’t make a transcription error that way..
I’m not going to worry about it unless all the shows just get cancelled tomorrow. And even if they do I won’t. These progressive voices will surface somewhere. So there. What will be will be.
This from the right wing radio equalizer website
No matter what I try, the ThinkProgress website is coming up with “problem loading page.” Can someone give me a summary? Please?
Gypsy, here’s the entire post (see bottom where AA radio denies it all)
Air America To Declare Bankruptcy, But Progressive Radio Remains Strong
Air America Radio will announce a major restructuring on Friday, which is expected to include a bankruptcy filing, three independent sources have told ThinkProgress.
Air America could remain on the air under the deal, but significant personnel changes are already in the works. Sources say five Air America employees were laid off yesterday and were told there would be no severance without capital infusion or bankruptcy. Also, Air America has ended its relationship with host Jerry Springer.
The right wing is sure to seize on Air America’s financial woes as a sign that progressive talk radio is unpopular. In fact, Air America succeeded at creating something that didn’t exist: the progressive talk radio format. That format is now established and strong and will continue with or without Air America. Indeed, many of the country’s most successful and widely-syndicated progressive talk hosts — Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller, for instance — aren’t even associated with Air America.
Radio giant Clear Channel is so committed to progressive talk radio that, this week, it will announce a partnership with the Center for American Progress and MSS Inc. to conduct a nationwide search for the next Progressive Talk Radio Star.

Hi Gypsy….long time
Here’s the cliff notes on why AirHead America is bankrupt.
AirHead America could not compete in the real world. There is no paying audience for this socialist pablum. Soros welfare is OVER
Advertisers will pay great money for ad time if there is a strong audience.
Thus the bankruptcy.
Hope all is well.
Speedy
Thanks, Susan. I wonder what the truth of the whole thing is, though. Since there was a staff meeting and Randi was going to “report” on it I assume there was something to discuss other than just the rumors.
Then again, maybe Loofah Boy’s ratings are down again and he had to start a rumor to make himself feel good….
Speedy sounds like an asshole!
I will go with Susan ..I only listen to them, after 6 pm Eastern usually and Im sure something will come on the local station to fill any void created. I was hoping Sam would bump Marvin in the mornings though. :rant1:
Ewww.The return of Speedy .. Ewww :yuck::yuck::yuck::crap::crap::crap::eek::eek::fustrate::fustrate::paranoid::paranoid::paranoid:
I just realized I don’t listen to enough AAR to have an opinion on it any more. Just to Randi and Sam. I listen to Stephanie Miller on the way to work (unless I have a novel on tape to listen to) and to Ed Schultz at noon. During the Dead Air with Franken show I’m usually plugged into my walkman.
What’s this about Speedy?
Speedy prolly fell out of Barbara Bush’s vagina. And now he’s working as Bush’s asshole. Since Bush has made such a shithole out of Iraq perhaps Speedy could find a home over there. Nice job President Bush. Ha ha, now you gonna make Afghanistan secure too?
So Bush got it right in the debate with Al Gore when he said he did not believe in “nation building.”
Hey Gypsy .. remember waaayyy back there was this passing Reich wing screamer named Speed Racer. It was never right so it was so easily forgotten.:crap::crap::paranoid:
And he apparently does not believe in his oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America” either since he’d rather piss on it. It’s nothing but a GD piece of paper. Bush wipes his ass on the Constitution and Republicans love him for it.
Ugh! My friend who’s stationed in Afghanistan has started to use the word Iraqification.
Gee, I leave to go to school, and look what happens! And little speedy finally slipped one past the goalie! That’s a major achievement for him or her. I don’t envy you out there in Colorado amongst meatheads like him, Fred.
(continuation of 161) Bush holds the soiled paper up to Chaney’s nose and Chaney says: “I can’t smell anything.” Bush replies: “Of course not . . . our SHIT don’t stink!”
If this election does not go the way Rhodes envisions and the SBR Titanic begins to go down by the bow will she appear in her khakis with her assault rifle and yell the R word into the microphone or will she be the one who directs all of us to the box cars. :paranoid::paranoid:
Cheney, right?:peace:
I’ve been meaning to ask this for awhile, Fred, what’s SBR?
The R word?
Those assholes are gonna find a way to stay in office Fred. The Christian Right will help them maintain their control. And we shall watch as we are mired in that shithole some like to call the Middle East. How ’bout this Bush: :fu: My Middle finger to you buddy. You better hope we don’t win the House you asshole. We’re coming after you. You’re party went after Clinton. Turnabout is fair play. We’re coming after you buddy! A picture of Bush: :paranoid:
hmm SonovaBeeyotch Republicans?
There are a lot of crazy people in Colorado or we would never have had 10 years of rethug rule. The problem is they are still here and in the way of progress at every turn. They need to have a bad accident involving the TREE TRIMMING TRUCK :yuck::yuck::paranoid::paranoid:
R = Revolt,… Revolution,… Ring their necks,..:gate::omg::jason::jason::jason::fist:
I got sidetracked from my podcast today. I’ll work on it tomorrow. I’d rather do that than the gym anyway. A want some pork chops and apple sauce.
interesting day, huh?

Leonard Peltier
http://www.counterpunch.org/peltier09132006.html
Randi never said anything. 🙄
Speedy! Another asshole heard from.
Don’t worry, folks, he can’t post very often. It’s tough for him to type with one hand.
The other hand, of course, is holding the microscope in an attempt to find his miniscule boy-penis.
Go back to sleep, troll. Mommy wants her laptop back.
she was told not to I think…
Bet Sam will say something. 😉
Nicki does that article imply that when you preach sedition from a soap box that it would be a good idea if you are surrounded by people in sweat shits wearing ski masks that are heavily armed. :?::?::?: WCW is advertising it on the radio .. so what did he really do. ??:eek::eek::paranoid::paranoid:
Fred, that is one of those fortuitous typos:
Peltier’s story is classic. Too long for me to go into (Perhaps Nicki has more patience to type.) Read up on it here.
The Google tool bar needs a not good phrase parsing utility as well as a spell checker. 😮

I may blog tonight if I can get online. If not, keep your knees loose, okay?
Novak: Real story behind Armitage’s role
September 13, 2006
BY ROBERT NOVAK SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST
When Richard Armitage finally acknowledged last week he was my source three years ago in revealing Valerie Plame Wilson as a CIA employee, the former deputy secretary of state’s interviews obscured what he really did. I want to set the record straight based on firsthand knowledge.
First, Armitage did not, as he now indicates, merely pass on something he had heard and that he ‘‘thought’’ might be so. Rather, he identified to me the CIA division where Mrs. Wilson worked, and said flatly that she recommended the mission to Niger by her husband, former Amb. Joseph Wilson.
Second, Armitage did not slip me this information as idle chitchat, as he now suggests. He made clear he considered it especially suited for my column.
http://suntimes.com/output/news/cst-edt-novak14.html
Fred. Are you asking what happened to Leonard Peltier? You don’t know? FBI wanted a scapegoat; Leonard was chosen. The details are available.
Sammy addressed in length the rumors surrounding AAR. He said that a decision about bankruptcy has not been made. He said that it is not unusual for a new start up company to have money problems. And, if that does happen at some point, it would go into reorganization and they would continue to broadcast. He did a run down of the new schedule. I think this is what I heard:
The Young Turks 6-9
Sam Seder Show 9-12
Al Franken Show 12-3
Randi Rhodes 3-6
Rachel Maddow 6-8
David Bender 8-9
Eco Talk 9-10
Decision has not been made on who will fill 10-1 spot. He is hoping it will be Malloy
I was half listening, so I hope this is the correct lineup.

Peltier Frame-Up
The case of Leonard Peltier: notorious frame-up of Native American activist returns to public spotlight
By Cory Johnson
14 December 2000
Earlier this fall, in a downtown Toronto office, a Native American woman recanted her 1976 testimony that served as the basis for extraditing American Indian Movement (AIM) activist Leonard Peltier from Canada to the United States.
Peltier had been present on June 26, 1975 near Oglala on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian reservation when a fire-fight erupted between Indians and two FBI agents who died in the fighting. The FBI launched the largest manhunt in its history to capture the small group of Indians involved.
Peltier ultimately escaped to Canada, secure in the thought he was out of the vindictive reach of the FBI. It was at that point the US government produced affidavits that gave the Canadian government the excuse to extradite Peltier. A year later in a Fargo, North Dakota courtroom Peltier was subjected to a travesty of justice when he was found guilty of murder for the deaths of the two FBI agents. He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms and is serving time in Leavenworth Penitentiary in Kansas.
Some 25 years later, Myrtle Poor Bear, choked with emotion, declared, “I was forced into this, and I feel very awful. I just wish that Leonard Peltier will get out of prison.”
Poor Bear, now 48, related how FBI agents came to her shortly after the June 26, 1975 shoot-out. On more than one occasion she was taken away and sequestered in hotel rooms for days or even weeks. FBI agents subjected her to a steady barrage of threats aimed at pressuring her into signing affidavits that would implicate Peltier, whom she had never known, in the deaths of FBI agents Ray Williams and Jack Coler.
Where did everybody go? I have to brave the stormy weather and go to the store now.
:omg:
I can’t go with you 😳
Check out this MarkRiley story:
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2006/09/08/news/.mark.riley.threatens.bacolod.migration.firm.html
We will create another storm later.
Will AAR keep Riley. I know that I am in the minority here, but I like him and his radio work.
I’m willing to bet it’s not AA’s Mark
I like him too ::taking a break from AA and listening to The Police:::
Hopefully he will be on the 2-3 PST slot. Keep him around until the reforming of Morning Sedition.
I just logged in and will be reading backwards but if any Bay Areans are reading, The Quake has announced their new schedule http://www.quakeradio.com/pages/programming.html .
No Seder, only 2 hours of Franken, no Maddow, 1 hour of Riley. They are adding 1 hour of Stephanie Miller, 4 hours at night of someone called Lionel, 3 hours of Bill Press in the early morning hours, and Hartmann in the night slot.
On a happier note, I will be seeing Maron Friday night.
he’ll turn up somewhere. He’s a radio pro and they know it. Also that 10 pm spot is still open…
Cool, this site has its own dittohead “Speedy” [undoubtedly a nickname from his frustrated girlfriend?] – I knew something was missing; our own Lawton to goof on. Welcome. :sammy:
Riley will be on The Quake 2-3AM PST.
well that means I can stream him at 5 am in NY… thanks for the info
Oops, how did I get on yesterday’s thread? Anyhow, Sedition Radio has been updated with more bits, courtesy of the collection at thesnotgreensea. Now roughly 36 hours of bits from MS and TMMS.
Oh, Marc has a new placeholder page up for his web page. Good to see he’s gotten away from the AAR sinking ship.
I’ve heard Lionel on 1300 in Connecticut a couple of times. He can be interesting. 1300 AM has a stream if you want to listen.
Reconfirming Old News:
It’s been hinted about for some time, but Air America’s rumored lineup changes will finally be official at the liberal talk network…starting a week from today. And it brings a change for one partially Ohio-based talk host.
OMW hears that in the official announcement, as rumored and even reported by the host himself, “Majority Report”‘s Sam Seder will move into the 9 AM-noon ET slot on AAR.
And though that means “The Sam Seder Show” will indeed bump former Cincinnati mayor Jerry Springer off of the main Air America satellite feed, as expected, Air America will continue to offer Springer’s show via its syndication arm in the current time slot. That’s the same distribution used for Thom Hartmann, which AAR Syndication offers opposite network mainstay Al Franken.
Other changes on the official schedule released late today, which starts September 18th:
* Sirius/syndicated hosts “The Young Turks” take 6-9 AM ET weekdays.
* Rachel Maddow, who shared morning drive with Mark Riley, moves to a new two hour evening show from 6-8 PM ET.
* Riley continues for an hour on the AAR schedule, 5-6 AM ET, and the new Maddow show trims AAR afternoon drive host Randi Rhodes to a 3 hour program from 3-6 PM ET.
* The rest of the old “Majority Report” slot will be filled by two AAR weekend shows going to weekdays – “Politically Direct” with David Bender, and “EcoTalk” with Betsy Rosenburg (one hour each).
* And fired late night host Mike Malloy is officially off the schedule, with Detroit-based host Peter Werbe listed only as a guest host in the 10 PM-12 AM time slot. (It appears the 12-1 AM slot formerly occupied by Malloy’s show will now be filled by the start of the Al Franken repeat broadcast.)
According to the information we have, AAR says Werbe will be in the slot through September 29th, until “a permanent replacement is confirmed”.
I got this from Ohio Media Watch
so I guess we’re still up in the air with 10 pm… calling Marc :omg: ok, ok, I know better
This is so crazy….why would they flip the schedule? Its like network TV…they move a show around until it fails. Sam did OK at night and unless he was doing really poorly, why move him to the morning? He was saying last night how he had to polish up his morning zoo humor or somesuch. I just dont see it working all that well, though it will be tons better than Springer. Rachel might work at night if she had some other…um…hosts or writers or people with her. Rachel needs Pashman!! She should take Pashman and McDonald away from their respective weekend shows and use them as sounding boards….that could work.
See, I would move shows around in the same general time area so the fanbase that show had developed wouldnt be erased. It is counterintuitive to screw the built in audience and evenb the passing listeners who are used to hearing that voice, and replace it with a totally different sort of voice and show, also disrupting that show’s fanbase…..how does that make sense?
Ive been packing for Will’s school trip tomorrow and watching this Jimmy Kimmel Live salutes JImm Kimmel Live show…I never get to see this guy but he has some funny bits.
at one point he pops a huge pimple on Jon Stewart’s forehead and they have this endless shaving cream shooting out all over the place….very funny.
Speedy first, and xzeltzke (or whatever his name was) must not be far behind. In dishonor of them, I have posted the following comment at a couple of the wingnut blogs:
very cool webhub…its absolutely true…and what have they got against another point of view being aired? Why is it so important for them to shut down discourse?…maybe because their lies are so transparent that they risk being shown for the freaking liars that they are.
Im going to sleep….just too tired….
Maybe Ill get a bit of time to blog about this tomorrow….
Also Dowd has a great piece that I will post in the AM.
Ta!
I like it but weird that Betsy Rosenberg will get an hour of EcoTalk every night. That is so insane as to be brilliant. I suggest Betsy hire Jim EARL as her second banana. It would be proper recycling and therefore good for the environment.
I like Maron’s site. It has that Partridge Family Show vibe, right down to the retro 70’s lettering style.

yeah, so, I’m just going to leave now.
From http://www.khazaria.com, we learn about the cultural aspects of the Mountain Jews:
Occupations. According to historian Ken Blady, the Mountain Jews used to be agriculturalists and grew such crops as grapes, rice, tobacco, grains, and marena (madder). In later years most of the Mountain Jews were forced to get involved in business, so they became traders, tanners, jewelers, rug-weavers, leather-workers, and weapon-makers. A small number of Mountain Jews remained farmers as late as the 20th century.
Cuisine. The foods of the Mountain Jews are outstanding. I have personally eaten the Mountain Jewish versions of chicken shashlik (shish-kebab) and dolma (stuffed grape leaves), and I liked the way the food was prepared and the vegetables and sauces that were used with the meats. There are many very good Mountain Jewish and Persian restaurants in New York City and one of the Persian restaurants is called “Khazar” after the Persian name of the Caspian Sea.
Hospitality. The Mountain Jews were generous to guests, just like their Caucasian neighbors. Ken Blady says that this hospitality probably originated with the Jews themselves: “As one of the oldest inhabitants in the region and the people who brought monotheism to Caucasian soil, it may well have been the Jews who wove the biblical patriarch Abraham’s practice of hachnosat orchim (welcoming guests) into the fabric of Daghestani culture. Every guest was treated as if he were personally sent by God. In every Jewish home a special room or hut covered with the finest carpets was set aside for guests. Every host would… lavish on them the finest foods and spirits….” (p. 165-166)

Shish Kebab and Dolmabahce. Yemek. Yemek. Turkce biliyormisin?
I like the bit of biographical information
Is Borat really a “Mountain Yahudi”? :omg:
shish kebob anyway :omg:
I feel like yodeling and davening at the same time. That’s all I know
If one objects that Air America’s approach is more progressive than Don Imus’s, then I’d have to recommend listening to the station more frequently as much of it consists of the same sort of low level insult found on rightwing stations, but with different targets. It can be fun, but it grows tedious after a while.
Ok, this crticism would only make sense if Franken brought nothing else to the table (like Stephanie Miller) but he does bring insight as well, and the Bush Bashing (with him it’s more O’Reilly bashing) is much funnier than whatever Imus does
The New York Times (among others) has reported that Baron Cohen (in character as his Borat persona) has urged them on, stating “sue this Jew!” [3] He was, however, recently defended by Dariga Nazarbayeva, a politician and the daughter of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who stated “We should not be afraid of humour and we shouldn’t try to control everything, I think.”[4]
The word “Dolmabahce” in English means “The filled garden”. Because the Dolmabahce Palace is founded upon a reclaimed area by filling up the sea. It’s a beautiful 19th C palace right by the Bosphorus, on the waterfront. It’s in baroque and rococo style and very French. Many people think that it is a small model of the palace of Versailles in Paris, France. It can be visited with a tour guide of the palace as a group. Open everyday from 9:30-17:00 except Mon and Thu.
good advice…:menorah::sdavid:
Stuffed grape leaves. Dolma. Rice and meat.
Why is Ali G so harsh about Kazakhstan? I don’t think that country is as anti-semitic as he portrays it, through Borat. My guess is that he has family that came from there originally and were hounded out. But I don’t know.
Never been there myself…
Dolma (Azeri: dolma, Armenian ????? tolma/dolma; Turkish dolma; Bosnian dolma; Greek ntolmad?kia dolmadakia; Persian ???? dolmeh; Georgian ????? tolma; Romanian sarma; Ladino yaprakes finos; Arabic ??? ??? warak einab; Aramaic prakheh; Montenegrin japraci) is a family of stuffed vegetable dishes originating in the eastern region of Anatolia and found from the Balkans to Persia. Perhaps the best-known is the grape-leaf dolma. Common vegetables to stuff include tomatoes and peppers. The stuffing may include meat or not. Meat dolma are generally served warm, often with sauce; meatless ones are generally served cold.
Could have had some bad experience that colored his perception of the place
Jewish Life
Jews reside throughout Kazakhstan, and they maintain a substantial community in Almaty, the capital. Many cultural and education programs are sponsored by the Almaty community, including Hebrew and Yiddish classes, a theater, and a senior citizens center. Construction began in 1996 of a new synagogue. Smaller communities also maintain culture societies, synagogues, and schools. But many of these institutions are in dire need of Jewish-themed books and dictionaries.
Kazakhstan has diplomatic relations with Israel. The two nations have engaged in several exchange programs and have even established a “Friendship Society.”
Antisemitism and Government Response
Freedom of religion is a constitutional right and is generally respected in Kazakhstan. Thus antisemitism is not as much of a problem there as in many of the other former Soviet states. Nationalism is on the rise, and Jews have occasionally been beaten or harassed for their identity. President Nazarbayev has publicly called for an end to antisemitism, and he backed his words in 1995 by ordering the closing of a newspaper that had published antisemitic and anti-Russian articles. However, it was re-opened later that year.
In addition, though most of them speak Russian, Kazakh Jews are threatened by antisemitism from within the Russian population as well.
Selected Antisemitic Incidents
On March 20, 1997, Leonid Solomin, an independent labor leader and organizer of nonviolent protests against the state, was charged with violating Kazakhstan’s hard currency laws. In the previous months, Solomin and his associates were routinely interrogated and harassed in blatantly antisemitic terms by Kazakh KGB agents. Other union workers were told that they had “sold themselves to the Jew Solomin.” Solomin’s house was broken into, and union financial records that Solomin was storing were stolen. Although Solomin is clearly being harassed for political reasons, the state has publicly asserted that he is charged with “a typical economic crime.”
Dr. Leonid Stonov, who visited Almaty in 1996, reports that the paper, Kazakhskaya Pravda, has published several articles warning against “Zionists” and “international Jewry.” One accused Jews of driving a wedge between Russians and Kazakhs; another called upon the people to kill Jews “if they in time do not clear off to Israel.” One prominent target of attack is the rival paper Caravan, a democratic weekly edited by a Jew-this weekly is allegedly responsible for “the great confrontation of Moslems and Christians” from which only the Jews will profit. The paper was sued for libel by the Almaty Jewish Society and was forced to pay damages (the court also ordered the Society’s chairman to pay damages to the paper for declaring it “fascist.”).
