Saturday, and another chance for SU to extend their losing streak. This week, it’ll be on the road at Illinois. Could be ugly, but, hey, you never know. I think I’ll get me a big old bag of spinach and listen in.
Don’t forget to get out and see Marc, if you’re near San Fran.

Whaaass Happening :?::?::?:
The protests here are getting some real momentum, but only here in “Chinese” Taipei. The “Taiwanese” rest of Taiwan hasn’t decided, yet.
Hey, tred- have the Fall colors started?
Here’s more on the scarlet protest.
The BBC has been talking a lot about the protests in Taiwan .. Not much in the press in the SBR..:paranoid:
The Aspen should be turning at higher altitudes.. Its has been really wet so the leaves may just frieze , turn brown and fall off..:yuck::yuck:
Fall with its colors is the season I miss most here.
Sorry to hear you may miss it with the wet.
The thugbots are certainly using their “sting” terraist operations for lots of justification for the thugbots at least to be :paranoid::yuck::jason::jason:
All you see on C-span is hearing after hearing where the terraist acts their “stings” participated in or peoples “thoughts” are the subject of discussions.:jason::jason::jason:
Ewwww..:yuck: . the thugbots want to create private spy agencies… :yuck: Ewwww :jason::jason::jason::gate::omg::jason::jason::jason:
Private spy agencies??? WTF?? That movie story line of the end of Freedom is second only to machines taking over!
The thugs in their effort to make us more secure have created so many federal agencies that essentially do the same thing that they detect grid lock occurring so they now want to make the process “more efficient”,( translated line the pockets of some other thugbot) by employing private contractors to spy domestically. :bf::bf::bf::gate::omg::jason::jason::jason::fist::fist:

Off to a dinner and a movie. 881
The crusty old men calling WJ with backwoods accents certainly have their heads up their asses this morning. :yuck::eek::fustrate::paranoid:
I would like to know what terraist attacks torture has stopped ..but.. that of course is classified.. maybe they tortured a democrat about to get a rich donor .. to them that would be a terraist attack. :jason::jason::jason::gate::omg::jason::jason::jason::fist::fist::fist:

Mexico City- Left-wing protestors in Mexico City allowed traffic back onto the central Reforma avenue on Friday, breaking a 47-day blockade in support of failed presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Protest camps were also lifted in the nearby Zocalo square and Juarez and Madero streets.
“I shall not surrender,” Lopez Obrador told his supporters who had lived outdoors since July 30.
“I am again going to travel across the whole country and we are going to keep meeting,” he said. “I am going to go to every village to visit, so we are going to see more of each other.”

Hey Fred, did you ever meet up with Sean?
Immigration raid cripples Ga. town
Trailer parks lie abandoned. The poultry plant is scrambling to replace more than half its workforce. Business has dried up at stores where Mexican laborers once lined up to buy food, beer and cigarettes just weeks ago.
This Georgia community of about 1,000 people has become little more than a ghost town since Sept. 1, when federal agents began rounding up illegal immigrants.
The sweep has had the unintended effect of underscoring just how vital the illegal immigrants were to the local economy.
(snip)
Federal agents also swarmed into a trailer park operated by David Robinson. Illegal immigrants were handcuffed and taken away. Almost none have returned. Robinson bought an American flag and posted it by the pond out front — upside down, in protest.
“These people might not have American rights, but they’ve damn sure got human rights,” Robinson said. “There ain’t no reason to treat them like animals.”

To neutralize the thugs one has to marginalize their funding sources, their leaders and their media. Once they are neutralized there followers will mill around in confusion. The neutralization should take place in a way such that they will very leery of coming back and having what ever is done happen again.:yuck::paranoid:
Most of their funding source comes from corporations. Boycotts seem ineffective.
The funding sources seem to be big corporations and very very wealthy families and individuals. The majority of their followers are generally poorly educated and poor.
Corporations are run by bosses and by boards of directors and to a lesser extent share holders. Obviously the first two are comprised of people who probably live someplace where they can be located. The loss of stability in the social fabric would , however , scare away investors who come to the SBR because they see it as a “safe” place to invest.
There media is a physical entity that costs a lot to establish and replace.
The number of thugbot politicians probably represents the largest number of participants that would have to be dealt with. Perhaps just removing their media would marginalize them. 😮
There has to be a better and less messy way than we see in Iraq. :yuck:
Commerce is also physical plant driven my miles and miles of buried ( but localized) fiber optic cable and local communications facilities which like their Media are expensive to establish and costly to replace.
If you cut a thugbot off from his stock broker they will go bonkers. 😮
Hey, so I got a cd the other day of an anthology of The Au Pairs, Stepping Out of Line. I used to have their first record years ago and on a cassette tape that is long gone now. There is a song called “Armagh” that may be still relevant. As soon as I download Itunes or something, I’ll put some of them up. This computer has musicmatch and some components are missing. It’s really annoying.
Yeah, but wouldn’t we cut ourselves off also? I think fighting these people may have to include a lot of low tech options.
In Colorado one thought was to wait until February and turn off the gas to the radio and TV stations at the meter which is outside and by fire regs has to be accessible. You can also do things like pull there main disconnect to the power company or take the oil drain plug out of a transformer. Some of these Clear Channel stations are totally automated so there would be no one around to notice the water in the toilet turning to ice.:eek:
What ever is done has to be by local groups maybe sharing information but little else. Keep the group size small and if possible limit it to just those people you know.
You studied this matter, haven’t you Fred.:wink:
I pretty much do that anyways.
Even the big power transformers in the utility substations have oil drain plugs. If you drain the oil out of them, they will short out and explode. Most utilities don’t have a whole lot of replacements. Those pictures of that power plant in Gaza that the Israeli airfarce shot up where a good example of what happens.
That’s good to know Fred. I will file it and remember it when I need it. :hubba:
If you have ever noticed most newer buildings have the HVAC units on the roof and the natural gas is run through pipes on the outside of the building.( re Walmart stores) I have wondered what would happen in one went to True Value, bought a pipe cutter and a 24 floor extension ladder and modified the gas supply so that it went into the air intake then ran like hell. I think it would have the same effect as “shooting” a cars gas tank would have only a lot more spectacular.:eek::eek::yuck::paranoid:
:omg:
Gotta go now, later Fred.
Hey nicki, got your video tape, I’ll watch it when I get to an ole VHS machine.
Railroads which haul about 80% of the power plant coal are very insecure. A chain with one inch links ( best stolen) wrapped around the rail will do very bad things. If you managed to do that right under an Interstate highway bridge it would do even worse things.:eek:
Better to shut down the “V” part of the HVAC system entirely, and pipe it into the building, but it would take a long, long time to get enough gas into any sizeable place in order for it to become explosive, even if you took it off before the PRV and made sure everything was sealed up tight (works much better if you find a place with a basement, and then crack a gas line down there; the heavier-than-air gas sits and fills up the basement until somebody decides to come down and flick on a light – or the furnace contacts kick on or whatever – and then you get a pretty good boom-boom).
So, first you’d wind up poisoning the night cleaning crew that’s chained inside the building, and maybe by morning you’d have enough gas to do some damage.
OK, maybe I’m the only one who thinks this is cool, but I think this is cool.
Humm… Hi tech but still corny ancient Star Trek Episodes. 😮
 The term is “classic” episodes. With the “classic” female alien costumes. :hubba:
Having a helms man on something traveling at warp 3 is corny.. so are verbal commands. :rant1:
Hey, there were a lot of dially things to twist, and blinky-blinky lights to pay attention to. I assume the verbal commands are all modeled on the navy. Besides, somebody’s gotta say, “go to Rigel and take a left.”
On a navy ship you might hear something like “ahead all engines make for 30 RPM’s all ahead dead slow.”
I suspose on a Star ship that would be “ahead all engines make for Mach 2200 all ahead dead slow ..” 😮
They say that on a new Boeing Airliner that the pilot does not go into the cockpit, sit down in his seat and fly the plane to Pittsburg.. He sits down in his seat, the computer asks for a destination , the pilot tells it Pittsburg and from that time on the computer then performs all the tasks necessary to fly the plane to Pittsburgh.:eek::omg:
Flying something at warp 3 in an area of space that has not been previously mapped would be extremely hazardous.. Suppose some planet darted out in front of you..:eek:
I would think that moving at no more than about 300 miles an hour would be in order. It would only take a couple of thousand years to get where you are going. 😮
Oh, well, they drop out of warp when they get near anything. But they’re warping space around them, and I reckon the leading edge of the warp field would shove the smaller stuff out of the way, so assuming they can detect any fairly large amount of mass (and, quite a ways away, too, if your relative velocity is, say, in the neighborhood of a million miles per second – roughly warp 5.4, give or take – and stay away from it, I reckon they don’t have to worry too much about slamming into anything. Hopefully the “auto-pilot” has a collision avoidance system. Seems like they ought to leave the shields up, though. I mean, what the hell, unless you’re low on dilithium crystals or something, what’s a little extra power.
Of course, how they ever fire on another ship when they’re both at warp speed is beyond me. I mean, the phasers presumably are at the speed of light, so you’d kinda run into your own shots. And the photon torrpedoes I suppose could have faster than light propulsion, but, damn, seems like they’d all need to have pretty sizeable warp engines and all. And if they’re using matter/anti-matter, then, shit, they ougtta pack quite a wallop. Screw the photon part (whatever exactly that is), just mix the matter and anti-matter together, and bang.
I have to go do some work around here- strange. Then I’ll go study up on my Star Trek propulsion theory. Later
Oh, on a naval vessel, you might hear, “fire off another boiler, Scotty,” or “bring us up to periscope depth, Mr. Sulu – that is, if you’re done checking out Mr. Checkov’s ass.”
Plus you gotta have a human to override all the safeties, and actually decide where you want the ship to go (and like, how fast you wanna get there, and then how close you wanna get to that spatial anomaly over there).
:peace:
I wasn’t crazy about the song for Enterprise, but I actually liked the show, even though it was very much maligned. TNG was my favorite.

Last year, two Colorado elections were reversed when recounts in tight races found that an Optech III-P optical scanner misread paper ballots:
* In Salida, Hugh Young initially lost a city council election to Ron Stowell by three votes. After the recount, he won by three votes.
* In Clear Creek County, a school issue passed by six votes, according to the electronic count, and failed by 18 when the paper ballots were counted. The machines had failed to count more than 100 votes.
The secretary of state’s office ordered 10 races audited last year where the Optech III-P Eagle was used. It was found to have miscounted ballots where voters skipped some races.
The Optech was decertified and is no longer used in Colorado, said County Clerk Pam Phipps.
there was a problem in my town with voting results last year…it took over six months for them to decide a winner in a local race.

Istanbul. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, spiritual leader of the 200 million Orthodox Christians, is “deeply saddened by the tensions sparked by Pope Benedict XVI’s recent comments over Islam, the Patriarchate said Saturday. Bartholomew said world religions had to tread carefully to ensure not to hurt others’ beliefs and called for greater dialogue and tolerance, a statement from the Istanbul-based Patriarchate said. The course which the relations between the Christian and Muslim faiths is taking … is deeply hurting the Patriarch” the statement said. “We have to show the determination and care not to hurt one another and avoid situations where we may hurt each others’ beliefs. Dialogue is needed more than ever. That is why our course must a sincere dialogue based on tolerance” the Patriarchate said.

Turkey Won’t Cancel Pope’s Visit in Country Despite Discontent Caused by Speech
16 September 2006 | 14:59 | FOCUS News Agency
Ankara. Turkey won’t cancel the visit of Pope Benedict in the country, expected in November, despite the wave of discontent, caused by the Pope’s speech regarding Islam, Europa Press reported. This will be the first visit of Pope Benedict in the Muslim country.
Hmm…I wonder what kind of protests the pope’s arrival will generate…
Hmm, digitally remastered Star Trek effects. I don’t think I like that idea. What am I gonna make fun of now? The alien female costumes?? :jerk:

Today was the first day I had to suffer due to my boycott of the propaganda network ABC. I missed the Ohio State-Cincinnati game (which OSU won!) due to the boycott.
Actually, I slept through it, which made the pain a little less intense. Now let’s see if I can hold out through Tuesday’s season premiere of Boston Legal.
The only other ABC shows I regularly watched last year were Lost and Desperate Housewives, both of which jumped the shark at some point during the season, so I won’t miss either of them much.
Dancing With The Stars is barely even on my radar, although I did find it hilarious that Tucker Carlson was apparently the first one voted off. Which spoiled my prediction that Springer would be first to go, but what the hell.

They’re taking it to the streets Thursday in Tampa! (OK, to the stadium, but still.)
United Nations International Peace Day 9/21/06
Protest the Tampa Presidential Visit at GOP Fundraiser, Raymond James Stadium
War monger George W Bush and other members of the Florida GOP delegation will hold a fundraiser for Congressional Candidate Gus Bilirakis at the Raymond James Football Stadium, Tampa on Thursday September 21, 2007 from 11 AM to 1 PM
This is also the United Nations International Peace Day and we urge peace, labor, environmental, immigrant and other organizations for peace and justice to take the time off and come onto the public sidewalks surrounding Raymond James Stadium to protest the presence of War Criminal George Bush and let them know that we will Give Peace a Vote! … No More War Candidates!
Please arrive by 9-9:30 am and we will begin walking down the sidewalks to the entrance of the stadium on W. Tampa Bay Blvd., so that we are stationed by 10 AM, an hour before the presidents arrival to avoid being left behind roadblocks and have our signs, banners and noisemakers ready.
Join with Military Families Speak Out, St. Pete For Peace, Code Pink, Food Not Bombs, Gold Star Families Speak Out, Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice, Nature Coast Coalition for Peace and Justice and the Sun Coast Peace Education Group, the Refuge, Tampa Chapter of the Sierra Club, Veterans For Peace, Pinellas Progressive Democrats, and labor, immigrant and environmental groups.
Bring along a musical instrument or noisemaker of your choice and your voice to chant and let the anti-war message be heard. Lets make George and his supporters feel the pressure of our presence throughout his stay at the fund raiser and make him feel as surrounded as our GI’s in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We will hold a processional march for International Peace Day around the stadium after Bush’s arrival and those that remain behind can carry on protesting. We want to send a clear message… to end the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, and to end unprovoked attacks on other nations using illegal weapons of mass destruction!
Parking is available at the K-Mart on Columbus and Himes Road
You can drop off friends at the ABC-TV Station and park at the Mart and walk or ride back up with a shuttle provided by the Refuge of St Petersburg at the K mart. You can park on nearby streets east of Himes Rd but avoid blocking driveways, parking on grass, or on private property.

END, CODE PINK MESSAGE
(Sorry about the length, but I couldn’t get TinyURL to work.)
If I can get the day off work, I’m going to try to be there. I have a day scheduled a week from Monday, so hopefully I can swap them out.
Gus Bilirakis is the son of current Rep Michael Bilirakis, who wants to turn the throne over to his son. This cannot stand. Besides, anyone who would appear with Bush after his actions of the past week does not deserve the office.

Sorry to hear the Zips lost, but we’re pretty stunned up here that Syracuse has finally won a game – and against a real team (if not exactly a great one) on the road, too. Their last win was against Buffalo, which is kinda like the Patriots beating up on a crappy high school team. Too damn bad they had to blow it against Iowa last week, or they’d be 2-1, with 2 wins against Big Ten teams. Oh well, hopefully it won’t be another year before they win again.

cresttwo, thanks for posting the judt aricle; it was poignant.
Well, speaking of scores, my adopted team, OU, blew a 43-30 lead in the last 3 1/2 minutes of the game. Mr fk will be very angry when he wakes up tomorrow. btw, He said the wall-idea around baghdad is pretty humorous. The idea evidently came up as a semi-joke and then was picked up, as hey, why don’t we try it. But there are relatively few insurgents coming in to Baghdad anymore; the problem is already in Baghdad -sectarian violence.
They are trying to determine who will dig the moat around their compound and pour the hot molten oil over the walls! :rofl2:

farm news: Today, I caught Mathilda the widowmaker goose who was all alone. (Her last husband, Ernie, died of a snake bite. geese will mate for life, btw). I took her over to a friend’s house where a “husband” of her same breed was waiting for her. She went off swimming with him and looked very content – tail feathers wagging. There are other geese there, too, and geese are very social. She needed some pals. She now has 3 lakes to frolic in (we just have a small pond) and she will still get fed every day.
It’s really quiet around here, though and I already miss her….even though I know it’s for the best. She followed me around the yard and honked if any cars came down the drive. But she has

Okay, I gotta somehow post these songs for you guys. I’ve been listening to The Au Pairs anthology for the last 3 days and it’s so incredible and provides a rear view mirror for what is happening now and if you like Gang of Four, The Pop Group and other post-punk British groups from the early eighties, this band will blow you away! How can I post these!

Hey, I am looking for the list of songs used on the Majority Report….if anyone knows where that is posted….They were talking about it on the last show and I dont know if they ever got around to it or not….
Hey Melina, I just happened to notice a day or two ago that the bumper music is listed in the Wikipedia entry for Majority Report.
Also, I think WebHubTel has them listed on his site too.
[St]Francis [of Paolo] was overwhelmed by the problems of the simple people, crushed by poverty and by the physical and political oppression of the powerful.
He pleaded with the Kings of Naples and France, running the risk of ending up in jail. He was worried by the threat of the Turkish invasion that hung over Europe and especially the coasts of his own land. He therefore wrote to the King of Naples and encouraged the King of France to do something about it.

Pope Benedict is dismayed, the cardinal said, because his words were “interpreted in a manner that in no way corresponds to his intentions.” Far from belittling the faith of Muslims, he noted, the Holy Father had explicitly warned, in that same speech, against “the contempt for God and the cynicism that considers mockery of the sacred to be an exercise of freedom.”
Citing the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate (doc), Cardinal Bertone said that Pope Benedict held the Islamic faith in “esteem,” and strongly favors inter-religious dialogue. He said that the Pope hopes the present “uneasy moment” can be overcome, and “collaboration may intensify” between Christians and Muslims. Catholic World News
Not all Christians joined in the crusades old and new. When Pope Urban launched the crusades the Norman king of Sicily refused to send troops in which Sicilian Muslims would be compelled to fight against Muslims in the East. His son, Roger II, refused to back the Second Crusade. In doing so they showed more courage than the leaders of contemporary Italy, who are only too willing to join the imperial crusades against the Muslim world.
‘To make sure of being right in all things’, said the founder of the Jesuits, Ignatius Loyola, ‘we ought always to hold to the principle that the white I see I should believe to be black if the hierarchical church were so to rule.’
Today most Catholic prelates in the West (including the Bavarian in the Vatican) and politicians of Centre-Left/Right worship the real Pope who lives in the White House and tells them when black is white.
Amen.
