Great, here comes another week. I certainly hope this one continues where the last one left off, at least as far as Greedy Old Perverts go. It was kinda fun to watch them fall all over each other this weekend, trying to get their stories straight. Otherwise, I guess I’d better get a move on. SHANNON, Ireland –Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she cannot recall then-CIA chief George Tenet warning her of an impending al-Qaida attack in the United States, as a new book claims he did two months before the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
“What I am quite certain of is that I would remember if I was told, as this account apparently says, that there was about to be an attack in the United States, and the idea that I would somehow have ignored that I find incomprehensible,” Rice said.

Poor Condaleeza, she doesn’t remember. She’s sure she would remember if she had been told about an attack. Of course the daily brief entitled “Bin Laden determined to strike in US” was historic info so she was able to remember that.

Now the idea seems daft. But in the spring of 1972, the dumping of a million or so tires offshore here looked like ecological enlightenment.
From the scrap tires, artificial reefs would grow and fish would throng, or so it was thought. A flotilla of more than 100 private boats with volunteers turned out to help. A Goodyear blimp christened the site by dropping a gold-painted tire.
“A potential grouper haven,” a county report opined. Artificial reefs made from tires “appear to be the next best thing to recycling.”
What happened instead is a vast underwater dump — a spectacular disaster spawned from good intentions. Today there are no reefs, no fishy throngs, just a lifeless underwater gloom of haphazardly dropped tires stretching across 35 acres of ocean bottom.
It’s not just a matter of botched scenery. Because they can roll around, the tires are pounding against natural reefs nearby.

Nearly 50 years before Sept. 11, 2001, the American public learned that a group of prisoners in military custody confessed to being part of an elaborate conspiracy to bomb civilian targets with bacteriological weapons.
The first prisoner to crack said the goal was “the mass annihilation of the civilian population.” As often happens, his confession led to others, and before long, three dozen prisoners had coughed up page after page of chilling, meticulously detailed admissions.
But it was all a lie. Thirty-six American airmen, shot from the sky during the Korean War, falsely confessed to a vast plot to bomb civilian targets.
snip
The airmen were subjected to something new: touchless torture. They were kept isolated from all human contact, apart from their interrogators.
snip
They were made to stand or sit in awkward and painful positions for hours at a time. One prisoner had to sit at attention on the edge of a stool for 15 hours per day for 33 days. Another time he had to stand for 30 consecutive hours, until he collapsed. Schwable was required to sit at attention every day for almost 10 weeks.
They were demeaned, taunted and treated like animals. Schwable said the guards “growled” or “barked” at him, slopped food at him, and made him defecate in public. “Every effort was made to degrade and humiliate me,” he said.
snip
After the war North Korean atrocities were roundly condemned by the United States, which complained to the United Nations that the Koreans had not complied with the Geneva Conventions. One institution, however, was not repelled but intrigued. The experience led the CIA to accelerate its research into the theory and science of coercive interrogation.
Between 1950 and 1962, the CIA poured millions of dollars into studies that tested different interrogation techniques, hoping to learn from and refine the lessons of Korea. The research culminated in the top-secret KUBARK manual, a 1963 primer on how to conduct coercive counterintelligence interrogations. The manual was finally disclosed in 1997 and is now available online.

“That’s just a big waste of money,” said Vickers, a Texas Republican activist who heads a group opposed to illegal immigration that until recently was the state branch of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.
…
Many expressed shock that a proposal they considered a pipe dream by pandering Washington politicians had been approved, and that a fence they likened to the Berlin Wall could soon separate them from their neighbors.
“For so many years, we talked about tearing down that wall. Now we want to build a wall between us and Mexico? It makes us look like hypocrites,” said Denise Carreon, 21, who like many border residents still had family members to the south.
Many others expressed outrage that the Rio Grande, a near-mystical river in the Texas imagination and one of the most prized bird-watching spots in North America, could soon be blocked from view.
“Zero — that’s how many people I know who support this. People are opposed from Brownsville to El Paso,” said Eagle Pass Mayor Chad Foster, head of a group of frontier leaders called the Texas Border Coalition.
…
Ray M. Keck III, the president of Texas A&M International University in Laredo, said the idea of building a wall to deter immigrants ignored the lessons of history, which clearly showed that such barriers do not work unless they are patrolled by soldiers willing to kill.

Wal-Mart to Add More Part-Timers and Wage Caps
By STEVEN GREENHOUSE and MICHAEL BARBARO
Published: October 2, 2006
Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest private employer, is pushing to create a cheaper, more flexible work force by capping wages, using more part-time workers and scheduling more workers on nights and weekends.
Wal-Mart executives say they have embraced new policies for a large number of their 1.3 million workers to better serve their customers, especially at busy shopping times — and point out that competitors like Sears and Target have made some of these moves, too.
But some Wal-Mart workers say the changes are further reducing their already modest incomes and putting a serious strain on their child-rearing and personal lives. Current and former Wal-Mart workers say some managers have insisted that they make themselves available around the clock, and assert that the company is making changes with an eye to forcing out longtime higher-wage workers to make way for lower-wage part-time employees.

Doco claims Pope in child abuse cover-up
October 02, 2006 12:00
Over 20 years, the man formerly known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger enforced a secret 1962 document on how bishops should deal with allegations of child abuse which included a code of secrecy, enforceable by excommunication, the BBC Panorama investigation said.
Father Tom Doyle, a canon solicitor reportedly sacked by the Vatican after criticising its handling of the issue, interpreted the document for the BBC and said it was an explicit written policy to cover up cases of child abuse which emphasised total Vatican control and did not mention victims.
The program also claims to have found seven priests facing child abuse investigations living in and around Vatican City.
But the Archbishop of Birmingham in central England, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, told Britian’s Press Association (PA) that the documentary “misrepresents two Vatican documents and uses them quite misleadingly in order to connect the horrors of child abuse to the person of the Pope.”

British troops in secret truce with the Taliban
Michael Smith
BRITISH troops battling the Taliban are to withdraw from one of the most dangerous areas of Afghanistan after agreeing a secret deal with the local people.
Over the past two months British soldiers have come under sustained attack defending a remote mud-walled government outpost in the town of Musa Qala in southern Afghanistan. Eight have been killed there.
It has now been agreed the troops will quietly pull out of Musa Qala in return for the Taliban doing the same. The compound is one of four district government offices in the Helmand province that are being guarded by British troops.
Although soldiers on the ground may welcome the agreement, it is likely to raise new questions about troop deployment. Last month Sir Richard Dannatt, the new head of the British Army, warned that soldiers in Afghanistan were fighting at the limit of their capacity and could only “just” cope with the demands.

Foley tried to ‘deal’ with ABC
RAW STORY
Published: Monday October 2, 2006
A Republican strategist attempted to offer ABC news access in exchange for not printing sexually-explicit instant messages sent by Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL,) according to a report buried in the Media Notes section of the Washington Post.
The relevant excerpt follows:
#
On Friday afternoon, a strategist for Rep. Mark Foley tried to cut a deal with ABC’s Brian Ross.
The correspondent, who had dozens of instant messages that Foley sent to teenage House pages, had asked to interview the Florida Republican. Foley’s former chief of staff said the congressman was quitting and that Ross could have that information exclusively if he agreed not to publish the raw, sexually explicit messages.
“I said we’re not making any deals,” Ross recalls. He says the Internet made the story possible, because on Thursday he posted a story on his ABC Web page, the Blotter, after obtaining one milder e-mail that Foley had sent a 16-year-old page, asking for a picture. Within two hours, former pages had e-mailed Ross and provided the salacious messages. The only question then, says Ross, was “whether this could be authenticated.”

His latest statement:
“In my 21 years as a Member of the House Page Board, every decision has been made on not just a bi-partisan basis but on a non-partisan basis, with our main concern always being the safety and wellbeing of the young teenagers who serve the U.S. House as pages.
“I was outraged to learn that the House Republican leadership kept to itself the knowledge of Mr. Foley’s despicable behavior toward the House Pages.
“I am now equally outraged to learn that Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert announced today that there will be changes in the policies of the House Page program. Once again, I was not informed of the meeting today, nor was I consulted in any way about any proposed changes.
“And once again, the House Republican leadership is following the same pattern of unilateral decision-making that caused this problem in the first place in the Mark Foley issue. Speaker Hastert’s announcement this afternoon is yet another example of the House Republican leadership being more concerned with finding political cover for themselves than with the safety and wellbeing of the House pages.”

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A City Council member, reacting to a video store holdup believed to have been carried out by children, says parents who can’t properly care for their kids should be sterilized.
“We pick up stray animals and spay them,” Larry Shirley said in a story published Saturday by The Post and Courier of Charleston. “These mothers need to be spayed if they can’t take care of theirs. Once they have a child and it’s running the street, to let them continue to have children is totally unacceptable.”
Shirley’s comments come after police say a video store was held up by a group of children, including a 14-year-old girl suspected of wielding a BB gun that looked like a pistol.
The holdup happened about 9 p.m. Wednesday at a Hollywood Video store. A 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy were charged as juveniles with armed robbery. A 9-year-old boy was not charged because police said he was too young. He was released to his mother.

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., says she was not told about suggestive e-mails that a Florida congressman sent to a 16-year-old former Capitol page, even though she is one of three representatives who oversee the page program. […]
Several high-ranking House Republicans have known about the e-mails for months, including Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., chairman of the House Page Board.
Late last year, Shimkus met with Foley about the e-mails. But Shimkus never told Capito or the board’s other member, Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Mich., about them until Friday, according to all three.
“There’s only three of us on the page board. I feel that we should have been informed,” Capito said. “I’m absolutely disgusted by what I’m hearing. I was caught totally unaware.” […]
Capito said she would have been very concerned if she had read those e-mails.
“I don’t think it would pass the sniff test,” she said. “Even asking those questions — that is not normal between a 52-year-old adult and a 16-year-old. It’s not like they’re family friends or anything. I think it would raise some serious questions. But I wasn’t given that opportunity.”
Late last year, Shimkus and former House Clerk Jeff Tandahl met privately with Foley to talk about the e-mails, but did not tell the other House Page Board members or launch an investigation.

Kos summary of what we know:
The undisputed facts here are these: the GOP pages (but not the Democratic pages) were “warned” about Foley as of 2001. Alexander, Shimkus, Reynolds, Boehner, Tandahl, and Hastert, at minimum, knew about the problem. It came up very directly again in late 2005, and there are stories in the press describing Hastert and the others as discussing the problem multiple times between then and the spring of 2006.
And nothing happened. Hastert himself knew, his office knew, and a sizable chunk of the leadership knew — and they just didn’t do nothing, they prevented the usual channels from even investigating the claims. As Capito says, it doesn’t pass the sniff test.
The more one reads about the sexual goings on in DC one can see a lot of parallels between these times and those in Rome in last century of the empire. GOP, Hastert CONTINUING To Block Foley Probes
by Hunter
Mon Oct 02, 2006 at 01:37:34 PM PDT
This latest round of behavior on the part of the House GOP leadership is astonishing. I don’t know what they’ve got left to hide, but they apparently think it’s something big, something worth a continuing stonewall even now, because Dennis Hastert, John Boehner, Tom Reynolds and the other GOP House leaders are trying to put multiple bullets in anything that looks like it even might lead to an actual investigation.
Boehner blocked Pelosi’s call for an investigation, instead shunting it to the Ethics Committee which hasn’t yet “decided” what they’re going to be doing about it; Hastert nobly calls for the DOJ (after an investigation was already announced) to investigate everyone except the House leadership; now Hastert is going to “deal with” the problem according to his own rules, without actual investigation of any sort but the exclusively Republican kind.

Rice Received Qaeda Warning Before 9/11 By Philip Shenon NY Times
JIDDA, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 2 — A review of White House records has determined that George J. Tenet, then the director of central intelligence, did indeed brief Condoleezza Rice and other top officials on July 10, 2001 about looming threat from Al Qaeda, a State Department spokesman said on Monday evening.
The account by the spokesman, Sean McCormack, came hours after Ms. Rice, the secretary of state, told reporters aboard her airplane that she did not recall such a meeting and said it was “incomprehensible” she ignored dire terrorist threats two months before the Sept. 11 attacks. Mr. McCormack also said the Bush administration had determined that the Sept. 11 commission had been briefed about the meeting, even though no mention of it appears in the commission’s report.
The question of whether such a meeting took place and what may have occurred has emerged as central since an account of it appeared in “State of Denial,” the new book by Bob Woodward of The Washington Post. The book said that Mr. Tenet and his top counterterrorism deputy, J. Cofer Black, believed that Ms. Rice had not taken their warnings seriously.

U.S.: Gas prices lowest since February
Prices fall to $2.31 a gallon in government’s weekly survey, and could be headed lower.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — U.S. drivers continued to find more savings at the pump, as the price for gasoline fell for the eighth week in a row to the lowest level since February, the government said on Monday.
The national price for regular unleaded gasoline dropped 6.8 cents over the past week to $2.31 a gallon, according to the Energy Information Administration’s weekly survey of service stations.
That’s down 62 cents from a year ago and the lowest price since Feb. 27. Since hitting a summer high of $3.04 a gallon in early August, the pump price has fallen 73 cents in the past eight weeks.
The Energy Department’s forecasting arm says gasoline could hit $2.15 in the next few weeks, though prices at many stations around the country already have crashed through the $2-a-gallon level.
Pump prices are down because of cheaper crude oil, which accounts for about half the cost of making gasoline. Oil fell nearly $2 on Monday to settle at $61.03 a barrel at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

I haven’t read the whole blog, so I hope this isn’t a repeat. Cliff Schecter kicks rethug ass!! Scroll to the middle of the page for the video.
Hey Andy. Yeah, I saw the video of that on C&L. Great stuff.
I hope every Dem watches the video, that’s how it’s done!!
Greetings All.
I am not around that much. I call regarding the next elections to get out and vote. Now I MUST READ (part of work) AND WORK!
I am listening the Rachel on KTLK for background noise 😮
I also do not read all the Blog — again only browsing blog.
Andy, great video
Thank You Druid.
Absolutely. When you have the fucking truth on your side, there’s no need to be calculating and political. Just come out and say it. There’ll always be the Republican minions or the “you’re not pure enough” crowd to spin things, but the hell with all of them. Just be honest. And let’s just hope there are no pedophiliac Democrats caught up in this.
WTF is up with school shooting and child violence?? 😮 Man! I am so glad I’m not a kid these days. I knew kids in my day carried knives to school sometimes and that’s about it. I’m also glad I don’t have kids to worry about going to school. This is insane. There were sad kids and picked on kids when I was in school but when did they start picking up guns and going on shooting sprees? What is it about the nineties and 21st cenury that pushed all these people over the edge?
It’s gonna get nasty :slap:
Oh my, poor old Denny seems to be under fire.
I tell ya PJ. Why do we inately understand this, but so many Dems don’t?
I think Fatty Hastert is gonna get :spank:
I think they get caught up in the “conventional wisdom” and their handlers. You get inside Washington, and everything seems to change. And it doesn’t help that the traditional media will spin even the most innocuous statements whatever way the Republicans want them to. I mean, Clinton “out of control,” and “crazed?” I don’t think so, but that’s the frame that was “accepted.” And it doesn’t help that the “left” is so ready to slam anybody that doesn’t exactly fit their little pigeon hole of what’s acceptable. How many people on “the left” demonize somebody because they disagree with one or two points of view, yet give a pass to the truly evil people out there?
They’ve really come to believe their own propaganda. That really scares me to see how easily people fall for the dark side.:reaper:
Hey Krista, I been through that part of Lancaster county where todays shooting took place many times. It is the last place you’d expect this kind of violence.
Yeah, I know Andy, that’s what’s so distressing. So, the story didn’t say much about the guy other than he was a 32 year old truck driver. I assume he wasn’t part of the community.
So, I think I’m going to form a scary industrial electronic band called Silly Puppy. We’ll chase bouncing balls around the stage and yap at the audience. :pup: :dancers:
Do you see print? I am trying to send on this contact, and it (this lil monster computer “contact here” thingy) keeps saying ERROR :growl: = “Out the Window” ❗
Well I see my print so = :smack: = :fist:
