On today’s date in 1989, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition for his nonviolent campaign to end the Chinese domination in Tibet. He accepted the prize on December 10th of that year, saying, in part:
I accept the prize with profound gratitude on behalf of the oppressed everywhere and for all those who struggle for freedom and work for world peace. I accept it as a tribute to the man who founded the modern tradition of nonviolent action for change – Mahatma Gandhi – whose life taught and inspired me. And, of course, I accept it on behalf of the six million Tibetan people, my brave countrymen and women inside Tibet, who have suffered and continue to suffer so much.
No matter what part of the world we come from, we are all basically the same human beings. We all seek happiness and try to avoid suffering. We have the same basic human needs and concerns. All of us human beings want freedom and the right to determine our own destiny as individuals and as peoples. That is human nature.
You don’t often hear kids saying, “some day, I want to grow up to win the Nobel Peace Prize,” and that’s too bad. It’s pretty easy to get angry these days – there are lots of things to be angry about. But maybe we ought to try to be better than that.
It might seem that the only way to combat the hatred and violence of those who run this world is with even stronger hatred and violence, but what do you wind up with if you “win,” except a smoking ruin of a world filled with death and rage? I dunno. Just sayin’.

Last week, the International Monetary Fund released its semiannual Global Financial Stability Review, ahead of meetings this weekend in Singapore. The report was full of warnings that the risk of a global financial crash is increasing. This comes hot on the heels of a message from HSBC, one of the world’s largest investment banks, that it has put the United States on recession alert.
So what is behind all of the doom and gloom? Chalk it up to the rising global imbalances in trade and foreign reserves that are boosting the possibility that a cyclical global slowdown could melt down into something worse. Not surprisingly, the U.S. economy is the key variable here.

Hon. Bill Nelson
United States Senate
716 Senate Hart Office Building
Washington DC 20510
Dear Senator Nelson,
I was stunned to learn of your vote in favor of the Military Commissions Act of 2006. This bill supports the reckless power-grab of the Bush administration and violates the Constitution. What were you thinking?
It has been proven that President Bush took this nation to war in Iraq based on manipulated intelligence and lies. This misguided bill allows Bush to interpret the Geneva Convention and other international law as he sees fit.
No president should be above the law. Giving Bush such free rein is akin to handing a drunk the keys to the car AND the liquor cabinet.
This bill:
1) Allows the US to torture prisoners at the whim of the President.
2) Eliminates habeas corpus, a legal concept that has endured since the days of the Magna Carta.
3) Permits the President to potentially determine any act of protest as seditious and illegal, including the writing of THIS LETTER ITSELF.
How can you support such an extreme usurption of the Constitution and Bill of Rights? Do you fear that your re-election campaign may be affected by Republican accusations that you are “soft on terror?”
Your colleague from Washington state, Maria Cantwell, is (like you) a first-term senator campaigning for re-election against a well-funded Republican opponent. However, Sen. Cantwell’s lead over her opponent is considerably less than yours, and she has the additional challenge of running against an opponent who is not insane.
Despite these obstacles, Sen. Cantwell voted against this bill because she believes President Bush is steering the nation in the wrong direction. It is astonishing to me that you disagree.
You will receive my vote in November, as your opponent is a delusional stooge unfit to hold any public office, much less a Senate seat. However, I am withdrawing financial support for your campaign, and directing my contributions to more progressive candidates.
Although we have occasionally disagreed on issues, I have always supported your service in the Senate, and have respect for your intellect and thoughtfulness. Unfortunately, this makes your vote on this bill even more incomprehensible.
This great nation should not be ruled by fear.
I fear what it may become as a result of this bill.

Speaking of China and Tibet ..
Tibet will be soldered to the rest of China tomorrow with the launch of a railway service across the Himalayan roof of the world.
But the controversy surrounding this engineering marvel was highlighted at Beijing station today when protesters unfurled a banner warning that the line would destroy the culture and environment of what, until recently, was one of the planet’s most remote regions.
The first of what is expected to be a daily influx of 4,000 passengers will set off from the Chinese capital at 9.30am on a 48-hour journey to Lhasa, which will take them across mountain passes, alpine deserts and the vast plains of the Qinghai plateau. Some travellers are likely to require oxygen, which will be available under the seats, because of the thin
air.

look at the Amish. I dont like the extremist aspect of their culture because in the entire world it is not exactly possible to live in that way. How Bush could thik that he is in line for the rapture and not people like that is….confusing….

Take a look at these numbers released by the VA!
Just doing simple math reveals horrifying death rates among Vets serving in the 2 Gulf Wars between 1990 and May, 2006.
Gulf War I and II service members are defined on Page 4
The Chart in question is on Page 8
http://www1.va.gov/rac-gwvi/docs/GWVIS_May2006.pdf
Based on these numbers,
85,738 Vets who served in THE FIRST YEAR ALONE of Gulf War One have DIED!
(12.30% have died)
100,132 Vets who served in the Gulf (Both Wars) from the SECOND YEAR of Gulf War I Through May 2006 have DIED! (23.15% have died)
185,870 Vets who were DEPLOYED in the 2 Gulf Wars have DIED between 1990 and May 2006! (16.48% have died)
What is killing so many Vets who have served in the Gulf? Is it Gulf War Vet Syndrome?
Depleted Uranium? We have used far more DU in this second Gulf War…
What will be the fate of those Vets lucky enough to make it home from Iraq?

If this idiot thinks america is heading towrds fascism, he’d better open up a fucking dictionary and find the word…better yet, find a history book and see what fascism is really all about. Every time someone disagrees with an idelogue they pull out the most extreme word they can. Could it be that Higgens just possibly read the bill and thinks it would make us safer? just because you and him think differently, that doesn’t make him the anti-christ. Don’t assume evil motives on the people in this country that think we are facing enemies from abroad. where would we be if we let the peaceniks of the 30’s run the show? I’ll tell you. We’d know all about fascism, first-hand. there will always be a peace movement in america, no matter how justified the war, that’s because of our freedoms. I really think we need to start inconveniencing local news channels in a major way. Disable their vans, block them, whatever. They need to be held accountable.

Pope abolishes Limbo
VATICAN CITY, Oct. 4 (UPI) — Pope Benedict XVI, after deliberation by Vatican theologians, is abolishing the concept of Limbo that put the souls of unbaptized infants at risk.
While it was never a formal part of the church’s doctrine, the existence of Limbo was taught until recently to Catholics around the world, The Times of London said. Limbo was described in Britain as “a place of rest where the souls of the just who died before Christ were detained.”
This week an international commission of theologians began its final deliberations on the concept of Limbo. Vatican sources told the newspaper it had concluded that all children who die do so in the expectation of “the universal salvation of God” and the “mediation of Christ”, whether baptized or not.
A Times source said the theologians’ finding basically says “that all children who die go to Heaven.”

Hey KP, the only real way to get their attention is to fill the streets and not leave. I’ve been to DC when there are a few hundred thousand people in the streets, but it’s always on a weekend when all the “important” people are away. Fill the streets on Sunday and never leave, shut everything down, and once all the jails are full, somebody’s bound to notice. Maybe.
They’d also get more of a turnout if they scheduled it for a weekend, for instance. Let’s face it, many people just have to work.

Although fascist parties and movements differed significantly from each other, they had many characteristics in common, including extreme militaristic nationalism, contempt for electoral democracy and political and cultural liberalism, a belief in natural social hierarchy and the rule of elites, and the desire to create a Volksgemeinschaft (German: âpeople’s communityâ), in which individual interests would be subordinated to the good of the nation.

There’s a great topic which deserves some hi-level study by progressives: It ain’t the sixties anymore; are sit down strikes, boycotts, marches, rallies, etc, all those things which worked for King and to a lesser degree for the anti-war movement, is this still the way to go forty years later? In a repressive time when the govt arrests people just for telling Cheney that his conduct is ‘reprehensible’, why are we still using the old tactics? The media has gone over to the enemy, assuming that they weren’t on that side all the time. Why try and rely on news coverage that will not be forthcoming? And if there is coverage, it will be slanted or stupidly reported. If there were 25 million people in the streets today, would Bush have to step down, or even fire Rumsfeld? Lets get real. Even if Barbara joined the demonstration.. these guys cannot be budged except by the people who pay their bills. Fix that, and we’ll be in business.
I heard a guy by the name of Mark Kurlansky on the Diane Rehm Show last month. He wrote a book entitled “Nonviolence: history of a dangerous idea.” He was quite interesting. If anyone cares to listen to the segment, you can do so here.

“It was very intimidating, there is no question about that,” said Botero, a media consultant and former TV cameraman. “He (Tancredo)crossed the line on this.”
On May 11, Botero sent the Washington press corps a release urging them to investigate Tancredo, whom he is opposing in the 6th Congressional District election. He also sent a copy of the statement to Tancredo’s office.
“I can be a reasonable guy, but if my colleagues don’t play by the rules, I have what it takes to get them to wake up and do their job,” Botero wrote.
“If you know anything about the training by Colombian Commandos, you will know that underneath a soldier’s suave demeanor, there is a fierce and highly trained warrior that can overwhelm you if you’re not careful,” he continued.
“I hope that I don’t have to go to the next level in this process, but I am running out of options and patience with every passing minute of media silence.”
Botero said those comments were directed to the media, but that Tancredo took them as a threat against him.
Botero said he initially was contacted by telephone at his Washington hotel May 12 and was told by a “Secret Service agent” that he was under investigation and could face a decade in prison for an alleged threat against Tancredo.
When he met the agent on a Washington sidewalk the following Monday, Botero said, 10 armed, uniformed officers approached him, asked if he was armed, then searched him and his belongings.
Botero said he later was taken to Capitol police headquarters, locked in a guarded room and interviewed while the agency ran a background check that resulted in a 3-inch thick file.
“I was interrogated for about four hours,” Botero said.

I heard Thom Harman say John Ashcroft was scheduled to be on his show Oct. 20. Sounded serious, not a joke. He did say “I guess if he doesn’t find out exactly what my show is, he’ll be here”. Anyone else hear this?
Forgot the name field. :smack:
I only see one photo uploaded by you.
I’ve generally felt no objection when I see Black Block kids trashing a corporate media vechicle, provided they’re politically conscious about it (ie, not out to just ‘fuck shit up’); reading this, I hope some Fux News (sic) vehicles get some treatment, :jason: because we know phone calls and letters will just be ignored by them. For those who prefer to write and call to demand proper crowd count, that is worthwhile too – wasn’t the NY Times finally shamed by massive outcry to report proper numbers after the worldwide pre-invasion demos?
So, my friend said he was watching our local Fox news and they were reporting on the protest at the Camelback Inn. Apparently they said there were only a couple of dozen people there. At the peak of the protest there were at least 250- 300 people. By the time Bush decided to get going people had to go to work or catch planes. I really think we need to start inconveniencing local news channels in a major way. Disable their vans, block them, whatever. They need to be held accountable.
Ahhh, that’s better.
Hey PJ, I wasn’t filling out the name field. They’re up now.
Hi PJ, I continue to be impressed with all the great emoticon thingies – makes me want to post things just to try and use them. This one is great :slap: Is that Foley getting slapped by fellow rethugs? I hate that term ‘bitch slapped’, but sometimes it does fit…
And now everyone can see what I look like, well sort of. :omg:
Cool pix Andy. Thanks for sharing them.
Kevin, I liked your thoughtful letter to Sen. Nelson, but the moment you say you tell him he still has your vote, I feel he or whomever reads his mail for him, will chuck it. Withdrawing financial support means nothing, I’m afraid, unless you’re a (pre-indictment) Jack Abramoff. Do a write-in protest vote if there’s noone decent running against him. Collluding in cancelling habeas corpus merits it, I think, no matter how much you’ve liked him in the past. :joe:
Where where??
And now everyone can see what I look like, well sort of
Here
I see Travisdem and Sblueheron, Marc and Mishna, Quietgirl, and some blurry photo called A Manly Man – where’s Andy??
Why the manly man of course, it’s a little blurry due to the water surrounding the camera.
A little blurry??? Dude, c’mon…No offense, but all that’s visible are your eyes, and very blurry at that. Well, but it does tell us that you go scuba diving.
You could say “argh matey!” :pirate::parrot:
That’s commercial diving, not SCUBA diving.
How are they different? I don’t know.
The equipment you use and depth you go to. That’s a picture of me at pipeline testing rig wearing a Superlite Bandmask, which suck by the way.
Wow. Looks dangerous.:omg:
Ok, I’m out. Goodnight, all. :fire:
G’Night ex-ny’er

UPDATE
Watch for Mike at 9:30 AM ET Friday 10/06 on MSNBC!
Still no official radio news to report, but of the three radio opportunities we’ve been writing about, one is now out of the picture, one remains unchanged (but seems to be cooling off as time passes) and one has become slightly more likely. The bad news is that we do not have a concrete time frame as to when we’ll be back on the air. As you know we are very eager to get back behind that mic! We do hope it will be before the end of the month.
As for media news: Here’s an article in the latest issue of Creative Loafing. Mike was also recently interviewed by salon.com for an article they’re writing about Air America Radio past, present, and future. Atlanta Magazine is also considering an article. We haven’t been told the publication dates, but watch for them. Mike had some interesting observations. We’ll post a link if/when they’re published.
We’re still working on a few issues before we can openly reveal what we’ve come to believe is the backstory to our untimely dismissal from Air America. You better get out a flow chart because there are more twists and turns than entire seasons of “Lost” and “24” combined. It is truly bizarre.
And it’s come to our attention that there are one or two Internet efforts underway to initiate some kind of independent syndication for the Mike Malloy Show. We want to thank all those folks who are working to establish a self-syndicating operation for us. As we’ve stated in response to your many inquiries via email, we are awaiting official word from a couple of traditional radio outlets before we delve into the world of at-home syndication or netcasting.
We do remain confident that the Mike Malloy Show will be picked up by a network very soon. If not, then we’ll certainly entertain all these other opportunities and generous offers in the near future. As always, we so appreciate your support and efforts on our behalf.
In fact, your email, calls, and petitions are tremendously helpful. It certainly is a big boost to our morale and is noticed by potential radio outlets as well. Thank you thank you thank you so much, we’ll be in touch.
Watch your back,
Malloys
