Oh boy it’s Friday. Here in the provinces, it’s Apple Festival weekend. No doubt that sounds dumb to you more sophisticated types, but it’s supposed to be a beautiful, weekend here, with crisp air, blue skies, and the leaves starting to turn. Unfortunately, our asshole of a Governor vetoed a bill that would allow the apple orchards here to distill and sell apple vodka. Not that I’m much for vodka, but hopefully Governor Spitzer will straighten things out when he gets in. Enjoy your day.
Well what do you know.
Kevin, I liked your thoughtful letter to Sen. Nelson, but the moment you say you tell him he still has your vote, I feel he or whomever reads his mail for him, will chuck it. Withdrawing financial support means nothing, I’m afraid, unless you’re a (pre-indictment) Jack Abramoff. Do a write-in protest vote if there’s noone decent running against him. Collluding in cancelling habeas corpus merits it, I think, no matter how much you’ve liked him in the past.
Comment by ex-ny’er — October 5, 2006 @ 7:57 pm
You’re right, and I thought of that when I wrote. Unfortunately, in this election a protest vote is not an option, because in the unlikely event that Nelson loses, this is what I’m stuck with for the next six years:
Senator Katherine Harris.

Keith Olbermann delivered a ‘Special Comment’ in his Thursday evening broadcast on the subject of lying, specifically that committed by members of the Administration, up to and including President Bush. His Thursday ‘Special Comment’ was among the longest he has produced on his MSNBC show Countdown. A full transcript is available here.
“It is startling enough that such things could be said out loud by any President at any time in this nation’s history,” Olbermann said. “Rhetorically, it is about an inch short of Mr. Bush accusing Democratic leaders, Democrats, the majority of Americans who disagree with his policies, of treason.”
He concluded by addressing the President directly, saying “You want to preserve one political party’s power. And obviously you will sell this country out, to do it… [D]o not throw this country’s principles away because your lies have made it such that you can no longer differentiate between the terrorists and the critics.”

Yeah, Sean, I’ve been saying that for several years now (about country moving to the right). I wonder if it’s aabout time for a move to the left to start again. It’s been so many years. I think we’re overdue for a shift., people are fed up
MSNBC I think is supporting Keith’s more outspoken partisan attitude (which is kind of cool). I think they’re giving him the a-ok for it. He’s become very popular and it’s driving up the ratings at MSNBC, that’s why.
Farewell, Martha
An eagle who taught some lessons to our region
Friday, October 6, 2006;
HOLLYWOOD WOULD have scripted a different ending for the saga of Martha, the bald eagle who with her mate, George, captured the imagination of the Washington area. But rather than feeling sad for what has been lost, we prefer to focus on the lessons that this improbable pair imparted about the beauty and value of the natural world.
Martha was put to sleep this week after veterinarians wisely concluded that it would be cruel to keep her alive in captivity following injuries that would have prevented her from ever flying again. Martha and George were so named by workers building a replacement for the Wilson Bridge, which the two bald eagles nested near in spite of the noise and commotion. They became mascots, and a public eager to imbue animals with human qualities saw love and loyalty as they stayed together and, over the years, produced 16 eaglets. Martha was injured in an attack by another bird in April, and her struggle to recover and rejoin George became national news.
That attack epitomizes both the good and bad news about the state of bald eagles today. Once threatened with extinction, the bald eagles’ population has rebounded to a point where some are suggesting they no longer need to be on the endangered species list. The eagle that attacked Martha is a sign of that increase; the battle, which was over territory, is evidence of the loss of habitat to urban encroachment.
George and Martha showed thousands of commuters a better side to a lousy ride over a bridge. As a result, many drove away with a new respect for wildlife.
No sooner did Congress authorize construction of a 700-mile fence on the U.S.-Mexico border last week than lawmakers rushed to approve separate legislation that ensures it will never be built, at least not as advertised, according to Republican lawmakers and immigration experts.
GOP leaders have singled out the fence as one of the primary accomplishments of the recently completed session. Many lawmakers plan to highlight their $1.2 billion down payment on its construction as they campaign in the weeks before the midterm elections.
But shortly before recessing late Friday, the House and Senate gave the Bush administration leeway to distribute the money to a combination of projects — not just the physical barrier along the southern border. The funds may also be spent on roads, technology and “tactical infrastructure” to support the Department of Homeland Security’s preferred option of a “virtual fence.”
What’s more, in a late-night concession to win over wavering Republicans, GOP congressional leaders pledged in writing that Native American tribes, members of Congress, governors and local leaders would get a say in “the exact placement” of any structure, and that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff would have the flexibility to use alternatives “when fencing is ineffective or impractical.”

Scientists have found a fossil of a “monster” fish-like reptile in a 150 million-year-old Jurassic graveyard on an Arctic island off Norway.
The Norwegian researchers discovered remains of 28 plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs — top marine predators when dinosaurs dominated on land — at a site on the island of Spitsbergen, about 800 miles from the North Pole.
“One of them was this gigantic monster, with vertebrae the size of dinner plates and teeth the size of cucumbers,” Joern Hurum, an assistant professor at the University of Oslo, told Reuters.
“We believe the skeleton is intact and that it’s about 10 meters long,” he said of the pliosaur, a type of plesiosaur with a short neck and massive skull. The team dubbed the specimen “the Monster.” Ten meters is about 33 feet.
Such pliosaurs are known from remains in countries including Britain and Argentina, but no complete skeleton has been found, he said.
The skull of the pliosaur — perhaps a distant relative to Scotland’s mythical Loch Ness monster — was among the biggest on record.
Scientists said they will return next year to try to excavate the entire fossil, buried on a hillside.
It is pretty easy to see that the theory that dinosaurs and humans existed at the same time is false ..No human bones in the TREX eating places. Yumm…. Yumm… human… Yumm…..Yumm.
I love hearing about urban raptors…sorry this one ended sad for Martha and George. I became a fan of the hawks that nest in the apartment building across the street from sailboat lake at Central Park. The hawks most eagerly watched are named Pale Male and Lola. I don’t suppose anything would happen to these two birds without the current batch of photographers and bird fanciers that hang out by the lake going crazy to protect them. I don’t know if that’s a wise course of action and in accord with the natural world, but I can understand their devotion…once you see these birds treating NYC buildings as they would cliffs of their more natural habitat (the photographer guys will often let you look at them through their binoculars) you are in instant awe of them

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. –A Rockvale man discovered that Western films aren’t a good source of emergency medical advice for a snakebite. Mike Edwards, 46, was bitten by a timber rattlesnake Saturday while working on his Rockvale farm. The bite was so severe that Edwards was kept at Vanderbilt University Medical Center until Monday.
The standard snakebite scene in many movies shows the victim applying a tourniquet to the limb and then cutting the wound and sucking out the venom.
As Edwards and his wife, Andrea, waited for the ambulance to arrive, a good Samaritan tried to help using advice gleaned from Hollywood.
“She put a tourniquet on his arm,” Andrea Edwards said. “We were on the phone with the EMT who was on his way to us, and he said to take it off.”
As the Edwards learned when they arrived at Vanderbilt, the tourniquet could have cost him his hand or arm.
“The toxicologist at Vanderbilt said the tourniquet just kept all of the venom in one place, and it swelled, which made it harder for the antivenin to get to it,” Mike Edwards said.

St. Bruno
Confessor, ecclesiastical writer, and founder of the Carthusian Order. He was born at Cologne about the year 1030; died 6 October, 1101. He is usually represented with a death’s head in his hands, a book and a cross, or crowned with seven stars; or with a roll bearing the device O Bonitas. His feast is kept on the 6th of October.

Fred, I cut down the standing deadwood with :jason:, but used the axe for splitting. That was taken at the cabin I lived in in the Colorado front range.
And it’s not fuzzy.
More importantly, Bette Davis died on this date in 1989. Oh, and it’s Thor Hyerdahl’s birthday, too.
I’m fascinated with the Saints. A lot of pagans treat them as Gods of a panthiesm and pray to them. Non Catholics. True Catholics would cringe I would assume …
Kon Tiki!
Catholics pray to saints for intercession. Also to Mary hence the rosary.

Evacuations after US plant blast
An estimated 17,000 people have been evacuated from near a chemical plant in North Carolina after a blast inside the compound that injured at least 18.
An explosion that rocked the plant near the town of Apex sent clouds of chemical smoke high into the sky.
Officials said the cause of the blast late on Thursday was not clear, but said it may take days to extinguish.
About half of the residents of Apex were quickly evacuated, with more told to leave their homes hours later.

Characteristics of Fascist Philosophy
Fascism, especially in its early stages, is obliged to be antitheoretical and frankly opportunistic in order to appeal to many diverse groups. Nevertheless, a few key concepts are basic to it. First and most important is the glorification of the state and the total subordination of the individual to it. The state is defined as an organic whole into which individuals must be absorbed for their own and the state’s benefit. This “total state” is absolute in its methods and unlimited by law in its control and direction of its citizens.
A second ruling concept of fascism is embodied in the theory of social Darwinism. The doctrine of survival of the fittest and the necessity of struggle for life is applied by fascists to the life of a nation-state. Peaceful, complacent nations are seen as doomed to fall before more dynamic ones, making struggle and aggressive militarism a leading characteristic of the fascist state. Imperialism is the logical outcome of this dogma.
Another element of fascism is its elitism. Salvation from rule by the mob and the destruction of the existing social order can be effected only by an authoritarian leader who embodies the highest ideals of the nation. This concept of the leader as hero or superman, borrowed in part from the romanticism of Friedrich Nietzsche, Thomas Carlyle, and Richard Wagner, is closely linked with fascism’s rejection of reason and intelligence and its emphasis on vision, creativeness, and “the will.”

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Brings Rush Limbaugh to it’s Stores!
BENTONVILLE, Ark.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Wal-Mart’s program to register it’s employees to vote has been extended to educating them over their in-store music/public address system. The Wal-Mart Political Education Challenge, a private/public partnership between Wal-Mart and Excellence In Broadcasting, will help employees and customers familiarize themselves with the Democratic Process.
“We’ve been extremely pleased with the customer response to RUSH! And. Rush is truly tickled by the attention! Crowds were at Secaucus Wal-Mart ready to listen to the the big guy early this morning and the response to the loveable guy was overwhelming! After the official unveil and introduction conducted by a security guard, Rush received a rousing round of applause accompanied by delighted squeals from the kids!
The Wal-Mart Political Education Challenge debuted in July 2006 in Sacramento, Palm Springs, and Salt Lake City, and expanded across the entire state of California earlier this year. Due to its success, Wal-Mart has extended the program to 12 states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, the entire state of Utah, Washington, and Wyoming, and plans to further expand it across the country in the Fall of 2007.
“The Wal-Mart Political Education Challenge teaches employees and customers how to become responsible stewards of their republic by limiting Democrats and Big Government that can harm the United States,” said Nicole Anderson of Wal-Mart. “The program brings immediate political education benefits to our communities, educational benefits to our children, and financial benefits to our nation. We are excited to bring the program to new areas.”
How the Political Education Challenge works
Upon joining the program, Rush Limbaugh is downlinked to Wal-Mart Stores via satellite and played on a continuous 3 hour loops 24 hours a day. Wal-Mart will donate $5.00 cash monthly from each employee’s paycheck to pay for the program.

Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One’s Own
Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments
People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The
authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these
domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make
unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it. Across 4
studies, the authors found that participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor, grammar, and
logic grossly overestimated their test performance and ability. Although their test scores put them in the
12th percentile, they estimated themselves to be in the 62nd. Several analyses linked this miscalibration
to deficits in metacognitive skill, or the capacity to distinguish accuracy from error. Paradoxically,
improving the skills of participants, and thus increasing their metacognitive competence, helped them
recognize the limitations of their abilities.

And so the Democrats are feeling good, and calling for a giant drive to get the vote out on Election Day. Such an effort is essential—and not just to the Democrats but to the very survival of this foundering Republic. However, such a drive will do the Democrats, and all the rest of us, more harm than good if it fails to note a certain fact about our current situation: i.e., that the Democrats are going to lose the contest in November, even though the people will (again) be voting for them. The Bush Republicans are likely to remain in power despite the fact that only a minority will vote to have them there. That, at any rate, is what will happen if we don’t start working to pre-empt it now.
Even though this election could go either way, neither way will benefit the Democrats. Either the Republicans will steal their “re-election” on Election Day, just as they did two years ago, or they will slime their way to “victory” through force and fraud and strident propaganda, as they did after Election Day 2000. Whichever strategy they use, the only way to stop it is to face it, and then shout so long and loud about it that the people finally perceive, at last, that their suspicions are entirely just—and, this time, just say no.

I’m here Gypsy, home from 12 days at Good Sam fighting off surgical residents wanting to perform seppuku/harakri on my poor inflamed stomach.
Hey, some more of you are back!
AAR is a vast wasteland these days in San Francisco, except for Stephanie Miller in am drive time and Bob Linden’t goveganradio on Sunday nights.
Sigh.
I sure liked the Malloy youtube clips from yesterday…
Oh MAN! Thanks for posting Marc, PJ. But what a horrible cut off! Bad timing Sam.

Any body else as dumb as me, subscribing to 6 months of AAR when Maron’s show started in Cal., and then cancelling it when they stabbed him in the back, and then getting charged twice on my credit card in Sept by AAR without my permission?
Of course, I’m willing to forgive the whole $99.58 if they bring back Morning Sedition. :sammy:

Teacher Arrested
NEW YORK — A public school teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy International Airport as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule and a calculator.
At a morning press conference, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement.
He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction. “Al-gebra is a problem for us,” Gonzales said. “They desire solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values.
They use secret code names like ‘x’ and ‘y’ and refer to themselves as ‘unknowns’, but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, ‘There are 3 sides to every triangle’.”
When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, “If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction. He would have given us more fingers and toes.”
White House aides told reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the president.
