OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy — almost impenetrable forests of 10-feet (three metre) high marijuana plants.
General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defence staff, said on Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.
“The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It’s very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices … and as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don’t dodge in and out of those marijuana forests,” he said in a speech in Ottawa.
“We tried burning them with white phosphorous — it didn’t work. We tried burning them with diesel — it didn’t work. The plants are so full of water right now … that we simply couldn’t burn them,” he said.
Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.
“A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those (forests) did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action,” Hiller said dryly.
One soldier told him later: “Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I’d say ‘That damn marijuana’.”
suzie- me too…I saved it to my computer on my TV card and may be able to transfer it to you…I dont have time to look right now but if you want I can check later on….they rerun it at midnight, did you know?

Deborah Solomon is writing about John Ashcroft in the NY Sunday times. Here’s the teaser from Huffpo:
Defending the president’s policy on torture, he says, “I think there is a very sound argument for saying that those who violate the Geneva Conventions should not benefit from its provisions.” When Solomon reminds him that that the U.S. stands for rights for all, he answers, “Well, we have guaranteed many rights to the prisoners.”
Speaking of which: Ashcroft reveals that his artistic leanings go beyond music. He also makes “barbed-wire sculpture,” he says (you can’t make this stuff up).
Ashcroft also suggests the American Civil Liberties Union opposed the Patriot Act partly to make money and add members.
Elsewhere, Ashcroft, a leading evangelical, admits he is a sinner, explaining, “I’m unkind on occasion, and I am selfish.” He’s an active
Christian “because I am not good, because I need help.” Ask about specific “sins,” Ashcroft says he has “never had a mixed drink,” never smoked a cigarette, and if tempted by another woman he would immediately call “my wife.”
At the interview’s close, Ashcroft makes this plea: “I just hope that in meeting people, they’ll understand that I am not as bad as they thought I was.”
This week’s issue of the magazine features a cover story on anti-immigrant politics by former Times’ executive editor Joseph Lelyveld.
Died in Stockerau, Austria, on October 18, 1012. Saint Coloman, an Irish or Scottish monk of royal lineage who began a penitential pilgrimage to Jerusalem (Shemanski) and was stopped at Stockerau, about six miles from Vienna. At that time there were continual squirmishes between Austria, Moravia, and Bohemia. So the stranger, who spoke no German, was accused of being a spy and, after various tortures, hanged to death with several robbers.
For 18 months Coloman’s body remained on the gibbet, uncorrupted and unmolested by the birds and beasts–a miracle. The scaffolding itself was said to have taken root and sent forth green branches, one of which is preserved under the high altar of the Franciscan church at Stockerau. Many miracles were wrought by his incorrupt body.
Three years after Coloman’s death, Bishop Megingard translated his relics to Melk (then called Marc Maron, the capital of the ancient Marcomans near Moravia), at the request of Marquis Saint Henry of Austria, who built a tomb for him in the imposing abbey on the Danube River in western Austria. Four popes have granted indulgences to those who pray at the shrine of Saint Coloman (or at Melk Maron) (Paschal II, Clement VI, Innocent VI, and Leo X). Melk (Maron) burned a 70-pound wax candle in 1713 in petition for the saint’s prayers against the plague that was devastating the land.
Many churches and chapels in Austria, Swabia, the Palatinate, Hungary, and Bavaria bear his name. On his feast day in Melk (Maron), hundreds of horses and cattle are brought to the abbey for Coloman’s blessing. Then they are sacrificed at the altar. Dozens of neighboring parishes made a pilgrimage to his chapel near Würtemberg on Whitsunday until the 18th century .
In art, Saint Colman is a pilgrim monk with a rope in his hand. At times he may be shown (1) hanged on a gibbet; (2) with tongs and rod; and (3) as a priest with a book and maniple. He is venerated in Melk (Maron) and Ireland. Colman is the patron of hanged men and horses. He is invoked against plague and husbands by marriageable maidens.
Ah, so its like Saint of the Day….I though it was just sorta forced religion class….
Catch you all later!
Im off to the city…again…

Who ever this Repug woman is on the Young Turks has revealed a part of the conservative psyche that is so dispicable. An unwillingness to help their fellow human when in trouble. They have no sense of community. She thinks that Katrina should have been handled locally. Well, how can the people who are drowning help themselves. If you see someone drowning, do you just stand by and say, Oh, well, they should save themselves. NO! It’s up to the rest of the states in this United States of America to help out. I hope that every single one of these “rugged individuals” finds themselves in a situation where they need help so we can see how rugged they truly are. What a bunch of ASSES!
Hello. Apart from Jandek, what other musicians/bands do you listen to?
Thanks for your replies.
David
I pretty much collect and and listen a lot of different stuff so I’ll just
list what I’ve been listening to lately:
cool V/A release of amazing Southern Pre-WWII gospel songs “American
Primitives Vol. II”
Yo La Tengo – “I Am Not Afraid Of You and I Will Beat Your Ass”
Sorcery – “Stunt Rock” (film soundtrack)
TV on the Radio – “Return to Cookie Mountain”
Thrones – “Day Late and A Dollar Short”
Corrupted System – Basement Recordings
and of course Guided by Voices and anything Bob Pollard related (like his
new LP “Normal Happiness”).
Who ever this Repug woman is on the Young Turks has revealed a part of the conservative psyche that is so dispicable. An unwillingness to help their fellow human when in trouble. They have no sense of community.
That’s one thing I noticed about ultraconservatives – also many libertarians. This “rugged individualism” crap is nothing more than selfishness. I believe it’s an “American” trait unfortunately. Glad to know there are some people who transcend that
Well, SJ, community is how the human species has come so far(sometimes I wonder about that). We don’t have sharp teeth and claws, or horns and tough skin to defend ourselves in this world. We stick together and help each other survive and prosper. That’s how we have become such a prolific species. If the human race had been rugged individuals, we wouldn’t have survived past the first ice age.
Patriotism is not a good thing, at least the way people tend to define it. Patriotism: “loving and caring for the human race and other life forms we share the planet with” sounds like a good deal. Nationalism, on the other hand…not very healthy
simulataneously listening to Springer and Sam (or rather going back and forth) I don’t want the market to decide nothing. I want to… :tommygun: ooops sorry I’m being violent

Conservative media watchdog Accuracy in Media is alleging that the Foley scandal is not the work of a gay Republican, but rather of a Democratic operative posing as a Republican to undermine the party.
In a piece entitled, “Republican Gays are Closeted Dems,” Cliff Kincaid seems to allege that gay Republicans themselves are nothing more than a “Democratic ‘dirty trick,'” hoping to use the party to “advance the same homosexual agenda embraced by the Democrats.”
“If you are getting the idea that gay Republicans may be closeted Democrats,” the column suggests, “then you are beginning to understand how the Mark Foley scandal could have been a Democratic Party dirty trick.”
Accuracy in Media has come under fire in the past for reports alleging that then-president Bill Clinton was involved in the death of Vincent Foster. The allegations are contrary to other government and independent reports, including one prepared by Kenneth Starr, the prosecutor whose work regarding the Lewinski affair eventually led to Clinton’s impeachment, though not removal from office.

NEW YORK — A woman in a high-rise apartment hit by New York Yankee Cory Lidle’s plane survived after her housekeeper saw the aircraft coming and rushed in from another room to get her out, a relative of the resident said Thursday.
Flames from the deadly crash scorched Ilana Benhuri’s back and legs but she “has very good spirits,” said her husband, Dr. Parviz Benhuri.
“She was in the same room that the nose of the plane hit,” said her brother-in-law Dr. Marc Benhuri. “I’m telling you it’s an absolute miracle that she’s alive. I honestly believe that God was sitting on her shoulder.”
Ilana Benhuri, 50, was doing paperwork at her desk when she heard the small plane outside her 30th-floor apartment, Marc Benhuri said. The housekeeper, Eveline Reategue, saw the plane coming and rushed into the other room to get her, he said.
The plane crashed into the apartment as they were trying to get out, Marc Benhuri said. Lidle and his flight instructor, Tyler Stanger, were killed.
If you look at the video, you can clearly see that it wasn’t a small plane, it was a cruise missle, which apparenly malfunctioned. Clearly, this was orchestrated by the Bush administration in order to bury the “Bush thinks evangelical Christians are a bunch of nuts” story.
Documents Reveal Scope of U.S. Database on Antiwar Protests
WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 — Internal military documents released Thursday provided new details about the Defense Department’s collection of information on demonstrations nationwide last year by students, Quakers and others opposed to the Iraq war.
The documents, obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union under a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, show, for instance, that military officials labeled as “potential terrorist activity” events like a “Stop the War Now” rally in Akron, Ohio, in March 2005.
The Defense Department acknowledged last year that its analysts had maintained records on war protests in an internal database past the 90 days its guidelines allowed, and even after it was determined there was no threat.
A department spokesman said Thursday that the “questionable data collection” had led to a tightening of military procedures to ensure that only information relevant to terrorism and other threats was collected. The spokesman, Maj. Patrick Ryder, said in response to the release of the documents that the department “views with great concern any potential violation” of the policy.
Not just the Quakers, either, but the Amish, too. You know that Charles Carl Roberts IV was actually one of those brainwashed DOD plants, don’t you? He had no idea how he’d been programmed, until they called him on his cell phone, and spoke the passphrase. Also an attempt to help out Rick Santorum.
On Sept. 21, Raw Story reported that Karl Rove was telling conservative groups that he had a surprise scheduled for the last two weeks of October that would turn the midterms in the Republicans’ favor.
Now, as mid-October approaches, we have to assume that Rove’s other shoe will drop within a week or so.
We have already seen how suddenly the narrative can change in an election. Eight days after the Raw Story report, Rove found the shoe on the other foot, for once, when an unnamed Republican operative outed GOP Rep. Mark Foley as chickenhawk who had been stalking Capitol Hill page boys for years. And worse, GOP leaders, including Speaker Dennis Hastert, Majority Leader John Boehner and others, have known about Foley’s predatory ways for months and years, and have been covering it up to keep Foley’s seat in GOP hands. The scandal has had Republicans on the defensive and off-message for two weeks.
Appeals court upholds woman’s right to protest while topless
Oct 12, 2006
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A woman, who was arrested when she exposed her breasts to protest laws that bar women from publicly going bare breasted, can demonstrate topless as part of a legitimate political protest, an appeals court has ruled.
The 7th Judicial Circuit Court of Appeals on Oct. 5 upheld a Volusia County judge’s opinion that Elizabeth Book could protest while topless on the city’s Main Street Bridge.
Book, of Ormond Beach, was arrested by Daytona Beach police and fined $253 during Bike Week in March 2004. The city said she violated an ordinance banning public nudity that was passed in 2002 to curb indecency at special events.
Book’s attorney, Lawrence G. Walters, said the latest ruling is a victory for his client, who set out to test laws against nudity because she believes they are unfairly applied to women.
Deputy City Attorney Marie Hartman said the city “respectfully disagrees with the opinion.” Hartman said the city is looking into an appeal to the 5th District Court of Appeal.

Talk radio group ready to tune into politics of the left
Baltimore Business Journal – 2:51 PM EDT Monday
Oct 10, 2006
A group of media and political partners is teaming up to launch a new star search for progressive talk radio.
Clear Channel Radio, the Center for American Progress Action Fund, Jones Radio Networks and Media Syndication Services, which is based in D.C., will conduct a nationwide talent search for the next voice of the political left.
The contest begins Monday and will culminate with a final broadcast in front of a live studio audience in the District. Entries will be judged by an expert panel that includes Ed Schultz, one of the highest-rated syndicated progressive talk show hosts on the airwaves.
The entire at-large contest will be managed online at TalkProgress.com, a Web site designed by Seattle-based Internet development company Nakea and by local promotions.
Clear Channel Radio developed the progressive talk format in March 2004 at one of its AM radio stations in Portland, Ore. The station’s rating shot from 23rd to first in that market. Since then, nearly 100 radio stations industrywide have begun airing syndicated progressive talk content, including eight in the top 10 radio markets.

Damn, Fred. I was hoping your link included a picture. No such luck. :boobs:
At least I got to listen to Marc in real time this week, although I missed about 90 seconds toward the end. Some people seem to want me to work as well as listening. Shame on them. I need to get a DO NOT DISTURB sign for my desk.
Of course, my co-workers would note that I’m already disturbed.

Free Fall Radio: Air America Goes Bankrupt
Liberal network lists $20.2 million in debts, assets of $4.3 million
OCTOBER 13–Air America Radio today filed for bankruptcy, listing liabilities in excess of $20 million and assets of only $4 million. The Chapter 11 filing by Piquant LLC, the radio network’s parent company, was made in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. The list of Air America’s creditors runs 25 pages, and includes on-air personalities like Al Franken ($360,749.98) and Chuck D ($10,749.99), as well as law firms, landlords, limousine firms, and a variety of other businesses. The company’s single largest creditor is Rob Glaser, founder of RealNetworks, who is owed $9.8 million, according to the bankruptcy petition. Below you will find an excerpt of the court filing showing all Air America debtors. (26 pages)
SHANGHAI, Oct. 12 — China is planning to adopt a new law that seeks to crack down on sweatshops and protect workers’ rights by giving labor unions real power for the first time since it introduced market forces in the 1980’s. The move, which underscores the government’s growing concern about the widening income gap and threats of social unrest, is setting off a battle with American and other foreign corporations that have lobbied against it by hinting that they may build fewer factories here. Some of the world’s big companies have expressed concern that the new rules would revive some aspects of socialism and borrow too heavily from labor laws in union-friendly countries like France and Germany.
Hoping to head off some of the rules, representatives of some American companies are waging an intense lobbying campaign to persuade the Chinese government to revise or abandon the proposed law.
The skirmish has pitted the American Chamber of Commerce — which represents corporations including Dell, Ford, General Electric, Microsoft and Nike — against labor activists and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the Communist Party’s official union organization.
The workers’ advocates say that the proposed labor rules are long overdue, and they accuse the American businesses of favoring a system that has led to widespread labor abuse.
“You have big corporations opposing basically modest reforms,” said Tim Costello, an official of the group and a longtime labor union advocate. “This flies in the face of the idea that globalization and corporations will raise standards around the world.”
Well like Seder said on this mornings show. The filing of a bankruptcy petition does not spell the end of Air America Radio. Many corporations have come out of bankruptcy and thrived. So I don’t think anyone can proclaim liberal talk radio as being dead.

NEW YORK — Air America Radio, the liberal talk and news radio network that features the comedian Al Franken, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a network official told The Associated Press.
The network had denied rumors just a month ago that it would file for bankruptcy protection. On Friday, Air America spokeswoman Jaime Horn told the AP that the filing became necessary only recently after negotiations with a creditor from the privately held company’s early days broke down.

3. We lose 2006 only through GOP election fraud–take it to the streets.
Ukraine and Mexico style streets protests and strikes are in order. Boycott red states. The works. I think this time the press will be covering the election fraud that the GOP perpetrates, because their bosses got screwed by Rove who did not make good on his six year old promise to give them media mergers ( Michael Powelll rubbed their face in it by revealing the day AFTER Congress signed W. up for a second term in 2005 that the administration never intended to keep its promise).
If W. and Cheney do something really bad, like try to declare martial law, the US military will step in to stop them. Right now the administration is suffering a severe lack of power.
Even though the demonstration in the Ukraine seemed to work the one in Mexico seems to have fizzled and is subjecting a lot of people in southern Mexico to what may be a massive suppression by the military. 😮
I would enjoy pictures of the army rounding up the congress and taking them away.. never to be seen again. Maybe it would also catch on and each states National Guard units would be seen doing the same to the state and local thugs politicians too.:reaper:

Bush to campaign for troubled lawmakers
By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent
WASHINGTON – A congressman who admitted to having an affair and a senator accused of using racial slurs will get some political help from President Bush next week.
Bush will make campaign stops Thursday in Pennsylvania and Virginia to help the two troubled Republicans as the GOP struggles to maintain its endangered grip on the House and Senate.
“The President has made a commitment, and he’s going to fulfill the commitment,” White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday.
Bush’s appearances are intended to give a boost to four-term Rep. Don Sherwood, R-Pa., and Sen. George Allen, R-Va.
Suicide bomber kills 9 in Afghanistan
By NOOR KHAN, Associated Press Writer
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – A Taliban suicide bomber rammed an explosives-packed van into a NATO military patrol manned mostly by U.S. troops Friday, killing one NATO soldier and eight Afghan civilians as shrapnel blasted nearby shops.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 — Representative Bob Ney of Ohio pleaded guilty to corruption charges today in connection with the scandal swirling around the lobbyist Jack Abramoff. He said he was ready to take his punishment for selling his integrity and his office.
In a calm and clear voice, Mr. Ney admitted before Judge Ellen S. Huvelle in Federal District Court that he had indeed engaged in a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy and made false statements about gifts he accepted while representing the people of Ohio’s 18th District.
“I accept responsibility for my actions, and I am prepared to face the consequences of what I have done,” Mr. Ney, a Republican, declared in a statement distributed to reporters after the court session.
Hey, Cnick. Nope, no snow here in the ‘Cuse. That was your basic Lake Erie lake effect storm. Buffalo tends to get more snow than we do early in the season, but Lake Erie is shallow and freezes over. Lake Ontario, which gives us our lake effect, doesn’t, so we tend to get more snow for the rest of the year. The biggies are the nor’easters, where the storm dumps snow on the whole northeast, and then as it passes, the wind comes back across the lake and dumps even more snow on us. The Tug Hill Plateau, which is north of us, and to the East of Lake Ontario gets really dumped on, especially since it’s at a higher elevation. They average over 200 inches of snow a year up there. Here in Syracuse, we only average about 115″ of snow a season.
The conventional wisdom says that the Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives next month, but only by a small margin. I’ve been looking at the numbers, however, and I believe this conventional wisdom is almost all wrong.
Here’s what’s happening: a huge Democratic storm surge is heading toward a high Republican levee. It’s still possible that the surge won’t overtop the levee — that is, the Democrats could fail by a small margin to take control of Congress. But if the surge does go over the top, the flooding will almost surely reach well inland — that is, if the Democrats win, they’ll probably win big.
Let’s talk about Congressional arithmetic.
Unless the Bush administration is keeping Osama bin Laden in a freezer somewhere, a majority of Americans will vote Democratic this year. If Congressional seats were allocated in proportion to popular votes, a Democratic House would be a done deal. But they aren’t, and the way our electoral system works, combined with the way ethnic groups are distributed, still gives the Republicans some hope of holding on.
The key point is that African-Americans, who overwhelmingly vote Democratic, are highly concentrated in a few districts. This means that in close elections many Democratic votes are, as political analysts say, wasted — they simply add to huge majorities in a small number of districts, while the more widely spread Republican vote allows the G.O.P. to win by narrower margins in a larger number of districts.
My back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that because of this “geographic gerrymander,” even a substantial turnaround in total Congressional votes — say, from the three-percentage-point Republican lead in 2004 to a five-point Democratic lead this year — would leave the House narrowly in Republican hands. It looks as if the Democrats need as much as a seven-point lead in the overall vote to take control.
No wonder, then, that until a few months ago many political analysts argued that the Republicans would control the House for the foreseeable future, because only a perfect political storm could overcome the G.O.P. structural advantage.
But what’s that howling sound? Every poll taken this month shows the Democrats with a double-digit lead in the generic ballot question, in which voters are asked which party they support in this election. The median Democratic lead is 14 points.
And here’s the thing: because there are many districts that the G.O.P. carried by only moderately large margins in recent elections, a large Democratic surge — one only a bit bigger than that needed to take the House at all — would sweep away many Republicans holding seats normally considered safe. If the actual vote is anything like what the polls now suggest, we’re talking about the Democrats holding a larger majority in the House than the Republicans have held at any point since their 1994 takeover.
So if the Democrats win, they’ll probably have a substantial majority. Whether they’ll be able to keep that majority is another question. But be prepared to wake up less than four weeks from now and learn that everything you’ve been told about American politics — liberalism is dead, whoever controls the South controls Washington, only Republicans know “the way to win” — is wrong. (Are we seeing the birth of a new New Deal coalition, in which the solid Northeast takes the place of the solid South?)
Except for the fix. I saw that the Bushies aren’t even considering a contingency plan for losing the House. I don’t know if that’s because they just plain don’t know how to plan for anything (as they’ve clearly demonstrated), or that they know the fix is in.
:tinfoil:Well we all know the thugs never take responsibility for anything so if the dems take back both houses the thugs will pull the plug on the resuscitator that is holding up the crap shoot and have the BLS release the real unemployment numbers and then blame the result on the democrats. All those retired people and those loafing around the pool and/or pool table waiting on their dividend checks will immediately have a third order tizzy fit and having that 7th grade perception will do nothing to make it look any different than what Karl Rove wants it to look like.:reaper::reaper:

Researcher says American West is becoming warmer faster on average than the rest of the world
DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — The American West is becoming warmer faster on average than the rest of the world, a climate researcher says.
“The West is warming dramatically,” said Jonathan Overpeck, director of the Institute for the Study of Planet Earth at the University of Arizona. “Things are just going to get hotter. You can bet the farm on it.”
The West is 2 to 3 degrees warmer than its average annual temperature, calculated using more than 100 years of records, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Many studies peg the rise in the earth’s average temperature since 1880 at 1 degree, making it the warmest it has been in the last 400 years.
At a conference Thursday, Overpeck said data from some 30 computer-modeling studies shows that by mid-century annual average temperatures in the West will be up 4 or 5 degrees. By the end of the century, the West could be 7 to 8 degrees warmer, he said.
“Things are cooking in the West, and they’ll continue to cook even more,” Overpeck said.

A – Rod on Board Jet That Overruns Runway
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: October 13, 2006
BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — A private jet, carrying Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and six others, overran a runway at Bob Hope Airport on Friday and was brought to a halt by an arresting system.
”I spoke to Alex. He’s fine,” agent Scott Boras said.
None of the seven people aboard were injured, federal officials said.
The Gulfstream G-II carried five passengers and two crew members, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement from Washington, D.C. It departed from Las Vegas earlier in the day.
The twin-engine jet was stopped by the Engineered Materials Arresting System, a 200-foot-long stretch of pavement injected with air bubbles designed to collapse under the weight of an aircraft as large as a Boeing 737 jet traveling as fast as 50 knots, airport spokesman Victor Gill said….

Hey-
Many companies function fine in bankrupcy and reorgainzation…too bad for the creditors….and I guess they go on to try to bring in new ownership or investors or whatever.
It seems like they are pretty well in debt…but they need a liberal Murdoch who is willing to lose money for years to get this thing going.
The problem is that the management has been so bad that its hard to get investors.
I am quite sure that Marc got his contract bought out and got away with the cash owed to him…this is why I kept saying that I was happy that he was out of it.

I wonder if they are meeting the general payroll at all….how many people they will lose…and if they can keep functioning.
I havent had time to read the articles at all and I have to go thorugh my files and find documents right away and then get some sleep.
I was arranging to take tomorrow off, but its apparent that I have to go back tomorrow….
Its very difficult.
I hope youre all not being “non violent” on my account…..
Go ahead and shoot the shit out of everything with your little emoticon…what difference does it make to rant and rave? Its just a release….
so, shoot em up and kill em all….just remember that republicans or conservatives make up the balance of our government.
Checks and balances to keep things somewhat balanced, in a country that cares about its people and is made of largely of a middle class who have a chance to own a house and have a nice life….
The people that you want to shoot are neocons…and different that anyone we have seen in a very long time…..
Was marc on with Sam today?
Yes, Marc was on with Sam Seder this morning. He is the one who first broke the news of Air America’s bankruptcy filing. Marc asked Sam if he thought he (Marc) would get the money Air America owes him now that AA has filed bankruptcy. So I guess Marc hasn’t received his money yet! I’ve looked at the petition. It is on The Smoking Gun website. I did not see Marc’s name in the list of creditors. Perhaps Marc Maron is not his legal name or he is listed as a company in the list of creditors. Sorry your still having to deal with family issues. I went though all of that sometime back with my dear mother. She fought cancer for a long time. I know that dealing with an aging parent or family member can be trying. We somehow manage to find the time and the strength to be there for our loved ones. So you must be a only child? I have an older brother and two younger sisters. My sisters were there 90% of the time for my mom. I don’t know what we’d have done without them. And I know my sisters allowed by mom to live through those final months with dignity.
I don’t think your words have resulted in a kindler, gentler, blog discussion here Melina. I would not worry about that. Fred wants to overthrow the government or disappear right-wing thugs. Sometimes I think he’s serious. 😮 I guess I’m gonna try to work within the system. I think it would be hard to stir up the masses. I doubt WCW made much of a ripple. It’s hard to light a fire under these people. I guess we’re so used to being f***ed up the a** we just think its normal. Wait a minute. Did I just say that?
Nick- I have an older sister but she has not been of help…as a matter of fact, though she is going through a hard time personally (as if I havent had my share this summer,) she has been unreachable because she is tyring on jeans at banana republic etc….and out to dinner tonight with girlfriends while I try to find health care proxys…..
anyway, its probably better, but Ive got my mother fighting me for no reason abotu little things, and I cant understand why because she is hardly around….its confusing….
But I think he will be OK….and if he lets me help him wiht the transfer home and the PT issue, he will live a long time.
If he insists that he needs no help, it wil be a nightmare of waiting for the next fall…..worse next time….
Anyway, I was in traffic so much today in manhattan that I was podcasting and messing with the iriver and its little external mic.
I havent read the book yet except at red lights. But I will try more tomorrow. I need to install software and see if it comes with a basic editing program or if microsft includes one in this media edition of windows…
Ive got to sleep….very tired and have to go early again tomorrow….
Ill listen to Marc tomorrow.
I think for sure he got off a lot better than most….I think they were buying out the rest of his contract but hewasnt makingmuch anyway, and he has worked almost continuially since leaving. Ill bet he has made more on the thoad already than he wouldve in this time….
I really want to go and see himnext weekend.
Pray to the saint of visiting nurse services and Physical therapy and PTs and MD’s.
ah forget it….Salon has an interesting article on religion and the spagetti monster….
Cool regarding the iRiver. In Manhattan? So are you in NYC often? I wonder if I’ll ever manage a visit to NYC. I’d love to take a trip there someday. Maybe. Get some sleep and I’ll talk with you this weekend.

I think its probably the most important show we’ve got and the mix of funny ans silly with important stuff is just perfect for the sheeple….maybe a little over most heads, but maybe the message gets across…..
Ill have to catch Marc on the podcast later….so sad…
Hey, Ive got a credit card offer from a company called Marbles! …its a card with a picture of the marbles that youve lost if you accept this offer. They are a “friendly” bank card….”uncomplicated like you!!”

Saint of the Day
October 13th
Coloman of Stockerau
(also known as Colman, Colomannus)

Corrupted System – Basement Recordings
and of course Guided by Voices and anything Bob Pollard related (like his
new LP “Normal Happiness”).

That’s one thing I noticed about ultraconservatives – also many libertarians. This “rugged individualism” crap is nothing more than selfishness. I believe it’s an “American” trait unfortunately. Glad to know there are some people who transcend that
I get an error message when I try to start the stream.
I’m streaming through my Replay AV. It’s fine now.
it’s working for me… 🙁
That’s what I hate about patriotism, it divides the human race.
good point, Krista. Good counter to the “runaway Darwinism” propaganda of everyone for themselves that these neocon types use.
I’m trying to find an alternate stream for Springer…
Why??
Patriotism is not a good thing, at least the way people tend to define it. Patriotism: “loving and caring for the human race and other life forms we share the planet with” sounds like a good deal. Nationalism, on the other hand…not very healthy
I think Nicki said he was getting an error message…

Also, the Western NY snow storm was created by a secret government weather machine, in order to help bail out Tom Reynolds.

Air America Radio Files for Chapter 11

Friday, October 13, 2006; 1:19 PM

Ney Pleads Guilty Over Abramoff Bribes

Will the Levee Break?
By Paul Krugman

Krugman was also predicting an economic collapse. Guess who’s shift that’s going to happen on :reaper::reaper:
Except for the fix. I saw that the Bushies aren’t even considering a contingency plan for losing the House. I don’t know if that’s because they just plain don’t know how to plan for anything (as they’ve clearly demonstrated), or that they know the fix is in.
On Bush’s shift?
:tinfoil:Well we all know the thugs never take responsibility for anything so if the dems take back both houses the thugs will pull the plug on the resuscitator that is holding up the crap shoot and have the BLS release the real unemployment numbers and then blame the result on the democrats. All those retired people and those loafing around the pool and/or pool table waiting on their dividend checks will immediately have a third order tizzy fit and having that 7th grade perception will do nothing to make it look any different than what Karl Rove wants it to look like.:reaper::reaper:
I love Maddcows lack of optimism about the dems taking back at least one house .. Nicky is right she s a media opportunist :gate::omg:
Rachel Maddow works on my last nerve. I cannot listen to her. I’d rather listen to Randi Rhodes than Rachel Maddow. Randi’s show was a repeat today! Hmm, I wonder if she knew AAR would file bankruptcy today? I didn’t see Randi’s name as a creditor in the bankruptcy filing. I guess she’s been getting her checks?

Chapter 11…
Hey-
Many companies function fine in bankrupcy and reorgainzation…too bad for the creditors….and I guess they go on to try to bring in new ownership or investors or whatever.
I wished to hell that we could hear him every day…but you couldnt purposely wish that on anyone…..
Hey Melina,
Yes, Marc was on with Sam Seder this morning.
Smoking gun website:

Been listening to John Elliott. He’s okay I guess.
Guess everyone is in bed or out having fun. It is Friday night after all! I had my fun a little earlier. I’m in for the night.
 The bed is looking nice. Good night everyone!
Yeah, AAR has assets of $4,300,100.
I noticed a couple of interesting charges on one of my cards this evening (a card I use only for the rare on-line transaction)
09-02-2006 AIR AMERICA RADIO 212-871-8100 NY $49.95
08-30-2006 AIR AMERICA RADIO 212-871-8100 NY $49.95
Funny, I signed on for a 6-month membership for ONLY The Marc Maron Show.
Kinda’ odd timing for a mistake, dontchathink? My Credit Union will likely cover it, but….
Oh, well, if Doug Kreeger got skunked for a third of a million bucks I guess I can’t complain too much.
