Rare meteorite found in Kansas field

GREENSBURG, Kan. – Scientists located a rare meteorite in a Kansas wheat field thanks to new ground-penetrating radar technology that someday might be used on Mars.
The dig Monday was likely the most documented excavation yet of a meteorite find, with researchers painstakingly using brushes and hand tools to preserve evidence of the impact trail and to date the event of the meteorite strike. Soil samples also were bagged and tagged and organic material preserved for dating purposes.
Even before they had the meteorite out of the ground, the scientific experts at the site were able to debunk prevailing wisdom that the spectacular Brenham meteorite fall occurred 20,000 years ago. Its location in the Pleistocene epoch soil layer puts that date closer to 10,000 years ago.
“We know it is recent,” said Carolyn Sumners, director of Astronomy at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, as she surveyed progress on the dig. “Native Americans could have seen it.”

I actually really enjoy steph. I couldn’t listen to her for awhile after she replaced m.s. and helped end it, but it’s a good morning “drivetime” show: short funny bits, lots of banter (kind of repetitive,but that makes listeners feel like one of the in-crowd — like our emoticons, at least half of which I have only a vague idea of their meaning). jim
ward (she used to call him a “voice guy” now Voice Diety) is really, really good.
I like all of the shows on aar weekdays, tho I don’t listen to several very often, because they’re aimed at different audiences and we need to reach everyone. when you listen with that in mind, each show can be appreciated at least occasionally.

in drive time, any bit longer than 30 seconds is too long, and dangerous to the commuters involved.

Oh, one thing you can do with your iTunes stuff (and there’ll be a little bit of loss, but maybe not so bad) is play them and use either WavePad or ReplayAV to record what’s playing. It’s “real time” and therefore a slow process, but it works.
If you have ReplayMusic, it is actually capable of recording the tracks, recognizing the song and album, and naming each individual file. It works very well (I use it with Rhapsody), and it gets the artist, album. and track correct about 95% of the time, so you can just get a playlist going, and it’ll take care of everything for you.

* During the octave of Corpus Christi, 1675, probably on June 16, the vision known as the “great apparition” reportedly took place, where Jesus said, “Behold the heart that has so loved men … instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of mankind) only ingratitude …”, and asked Margaret Mary for a feast of reparation of the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi, bidding her consult Father de la Colombière, then superior of the small Jesuit house at Paray. Solemn homage was asked on the part of the king, and the mission of propagating the new devotion was especially confided to the religious of the Visitation and to the priests of the Society of Jesus.
A few days after the “great apparition”, Margaret Mary reportedly said “You do not truly buy into this bullshit, do you? Why should Jesus want his followers to participate in such bizarre activities?” Father de la Colombière, Obviously in denial, acknowledged the vision as an action of the spirit of God, consecrated himself to the Sacred Heart and directed her to write an account of the apparition. He also made use of every available opportunity to circulate this account, discreetly, through France and England. At his death, February 15, 1682, there was found in his journal of spiritual retreats a copy in his own handwriting of the account that he had requested of Margaret Mary, . This journal, and an “offering” to the Sacred Heart, well explained, was published at Lyons in 1684. The little book was widely read, even at Paray. My individual podcasts that aren’t recorded in my school’s studio are normally recorded using Audacity. Free and easy. Just like me.
I use iTunes and use my iPod to listen to podcasts. Nearly everyone in my school has an iPod…. it’s kinda ridiculous, I know. But the service that I use podomatic.com have their own players and apparently (found this out when I uploaded Sunday’s program) convert the files for all different kinds of players. I’VE never had a problem listening to shows and I’ve only heard of a couple of people who have had a hard time listening to my shows re: their file type.
Honestly though…. I’m just hoping that I’m progressing as, uh, as a progressive. That I’m getting a better grasp on things.
It’s only the aac files with copyright protection that are a problem. And it’s only a problem if you want to, say, move them to a non-iPod device, or convert them to a different format or whatever. Same is true of Windows DRM crippled stuff. The business model is that, just ‘cuz you paid for it, doesn’t mean that own it and entitled to do what you want with it. Best bet (IMHO) is to convert to ogg, which is an open source, non-patented compression algorithm (also is a smaller file size for the same bitrate as mp3). If your device doesn’t support ogg, then go with mp3. If you buy music, don’t buy DRM crippled crapola (if you continue to accept it, they will continue to do it). Also, don’t convert already compressed files into another compressed format (say, from mp3 to ogg), as both are lossey.

Well, I actually make most of it up.
The problem with most computer knowledge these days is by the time you hear about it .. find the files to download and figure out how it works its already obsolete. 😮
I have faith (unfortunately some might say) that a computer hacker will constantly have a way of going around any copyright protection that any company attempts to put on their product.
If OurTunes is out there which lets me copy songs from anyone who shares my network (and I’m in college folks so that’s a lot of people), then there will always be someone to take the copyright crap off of “Dirty White Boy.”
Oh, there are always workarounds and hacks. Some are more difficult than others. For me, it’s more of a principle. If I pay for something, I should be able to pretty much do what I want with it, if it’s for my own personal use. And I pretty much listen to albums more than I do “tracks,” so, if I’m gonna pay for something, I’d just as soon buy the CD and rip it to my hard drive at a very high bitrate so I can stream it over my network to my media devices, or at a lower bitrate for my mp3 player, or make an mp3 CD for use in my car stereo, or put it on my other little baby mp3 player, or create a FLAC, or basically do whatever the hell I want with it. I don’t really want to have to fiddle about with DRM and how many devices I can have it on, and, oh, then they decide to change the format and you’re stuck.
And if I was going to not pay for something, I wouldn’t really want a file transcoded from one lossey format to another.
Of course, if I was on a campus resnet, I’d certainly be pushing everyone to install ourTunes and share. I’d also be freakin’ insane from living in a dorm again.
But if you have a SINGLE in a residence hall with apartment style living…… Is nice…

Violence in Iraq could end “within months” if Iran and Syria joined efforts to stabilise the country, says Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.
He told the BBC the move would “be the beginning of the end of terrorism”.
The idea for the US to open talks with Iran and Syria over Iraq is said to be under consideration by a panel of experts examining US policy on Iraq.
The panel, led by a former US secretary of state, is also said to think that “staying the course” is untenable.

Hey Melina, You sent me some email but I haven’t had a chance to check it. So it won’t explode if I open it will it? Having trouble with iTunes files? I know that songs I purchase on iTunes cannot be used as bumper music on my podcasts. The way around it is import it into my ipod and plug the ipod into the soundcard (input) and record directly into Garageband or Logic Pro or whatever program your using. It’s a bitch. But it’s a workaround that . . . works! 🙄

Well, up here we do. Both a safety inspection, and an emissions test. Not too bad, really. Go there at 7:30 and was on my way home by 8:15. Two vehicles down, and one more to go.
Gas here w/o a car wash at the Delta Sonic (cheapest around) is $2.46.

Colorado still requires an air pollution inspection on any car over 10 years old but that’s just every other year ..
Gas is still around 2.40 a gallon for 85 octane.. (it comes in 85, 87 and 89 octane) There is about a 12 cent differential between grades. I see that it is down to 2.20 at the stations along the interstate but its a good 10 mile trip to the interstate.:yuck:

Blackwell may try to remove opponent fromballot
It’s fairly absurd that Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell (R) is running for governor while serving in a position that allows him to make decisions as to who can vote in the gubernatorial race. He should have handed over those responsibilities months ago, but instead he issued absurd rules intended to curb voter-registration drives.
But the idea that Blackwell can also help decide whether his opponent, who is beating him badly, stays on the ballot, is truly painful. (thanks to reader G.D. for the tip)
Voters in Ohio can be forgiven if they feel they have been beamed out of the Midwest and dropped into a third-world autocracy. The latest news from the state’s governor’s race is that the Republican nominee, Kenneth Blackwell, who is also the Ohio secretary of state, could rule that his opponent is ineligible to run because of a technicality. We’d like to think that his office would not ultimately do that, or that if it did, such a ruling would not be allowed to stand. But the mere fact that an elected official and political candidate has the authority to toss his opponent out of a race is further evidence of a serious flaw in our democracy.
Indeed, it is. In this case, Rep. Ted Strickland (D) has two homes in Ohio, an apartment where he’s registered to vote, and a condominium elsewhere in the same state. Blackwell’s supporters argue that Strickland actually lives in the condo, which suggests he doesn’t reside at the home where he’s registered, which suggests he’s not a qualified voter, which suggests he’s prohibited from running for governor.
It’s hardly the kind of complaint to be taken seriously. As the NYT noted today, state election law “gives voters with multiple homes broad discretion in choosing among them.” This is little more than a silly right-wing stunt intended to interrupt a campaign in which the very far-right candidate is poised to lose in a landslide.
But instead of dismissing this nonsense out of hand, Ohio Republicans are taking the complaint seriously.

As for the floorboard PJ. My dad used to have this old multicolored Pontiac. It was in bad shape and it had a hole in the rear floorboard. I can’t remember ever peeing out it. But I do remember my dad loading all us kids up in the Pontiac for beer runs to the stateline. Our town was dry. So dad would take us with him to the beer joint and pull the backseat of the car out and load it (up under the springs) with beer. Then us kids had the duty of riding back on a hard seat cushion. I guess dad figured if the cops stopped him they’d never be the wiser! I remember my ass aching from the ride home! My dad was what NickiRose might term a “hillbilly” I guess. But I miss him. And believe it or not I miss the beer runs to.
