Video: Olbermann ‘special comment’ on White House campaign tactics
Mike Sheehan and David Edwards
Published: Thursday November 2, 2006
On MSNBC’s Countdown, Keith Olbermann remarks in his trademark “Special Comment” on the absurdity of the Bush administration’s attacks on Sen. John Kerry, under fire for remarks construed by Republicans as an insult to American troops.
Olbermann recalls the violent 1856 caning by Rep. Preston Brooks of South Carolina on the vociferous, anti-slavery Sen. Charles Sumner of Massachusetts which disabled the senator for three years and was one of the memorable events leading up to the Civil War. In support, Brooks’ constituents sent him new canes; drawing a parallel, Olbermann remarks, “We almost wonder to whom President Bush will send the next ‘new cane.'”

Iraq May Send US Force Home In 2 To 3 Years -Talabani
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani Thursday said his country could send U.S.-led troops home in two to three years, once Iraq has set up its own domestic force.
“Two to three years are needed to build our security forces and say bye bye to our friends,” Talabani said at a conference in Paris.

WASHINGTON – After years of surging military spending by the Bush administration and a Republican-led Congress, the nation’s defense industry is trying to gauge what life would be like if power on Capitol Hill shifts to the Democrats.
…
Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, who’s in line to take over the chairmanship of a key House Armed Services subcommittee, signaled a tough line during a telephone interview on Wednesday, denouncing the Iraq war as “Rumsfeld’s folly.”
“I’m not going to let the American military be used for a failed political policy,” said Abercrombie, who’s pressing for a withdrawal of U.S. troops. Asked when the pullout should begin, he responded: “How about this afternoon.”
…
“We’ll hear all these stories about soldiers who have to use their own cell phones to communicate, buying their own body armor,” said Coyle, who was once the Pentagon’s chief weapons buyer and is now a senior adviser for the Center for Defense Information, a research center. “I would see more emphasis on making sure the soldiers get what they need, number one, and number two, where is the money going if it’s not helping the soldier.”

Comment by Melina — November 1, 2006 @ 10:00 pm
Yeah, I watched it, and I’m still throwing up in my mouth a little thinking about it.
Cruella lost the election for sure last night. Not that she had a shot anyway, but unless the Repigs rig every precinct in the state, it is political suicide to advocate a 23% flat tax. Especially without exceptions for medical treatment and prescriptions. Her district has the highest percentage of senior voters in the state, so you would think she would know better. What a tool.
It was also refreshing to know that Harris backpedaled on her comment that voting for non-Christians is equivalent to legislating sin. I’ll keep that in mind if I ever decide to run for public office, just in case any christofascists feel the need to Swiftboat me for being an atheist.
Bitch.
Melina, you mentioned on yesterday’s thread that you didn’t think Nelson was forceful enough. Believe me, last night he took the gloves off compared to the first debate. He doesn’t want to be perceived as overreacting to any of Harris’ loonier statements. Not that I wouldn’t love to watch him dissect her verbally from head to toe, but he’s almost 30 points ahead and has nothing to gain from doing so.
And if memory serves, last night was the first time he’s come close to renouncing his vote on Iraq. About fucking time, but at least he finally came clean.
Hopefully the Dems (or Greens, or someone) will come up with a better challenger for this seat in six years, but for now my energy is invested in keeping this insane woman out of the Senate. If that means holding my nose and voting for Bill Nelson, I’m there.

Good Morning, :joe:
Okay, so, I have my early ballot and I have gotten through all of the propositions except one I’m stumped on. We have an eminent domain proposition that, apparently, is being introduced in several states and is sponsored by some rich guy in NY. Oregon passed a similar version and my booklet on the issues says they regret it because of all the litigation it has produced. Anyone from Oregon got any insight on this? Nicki? Gypsy?
Think Orwell.
Can you expand on that Nicki?

10th Century existence. The Scottish Saint Baya instructed Saint Maura in the harsh, eremitical life. Followers later gathered around Maura, who, in turn, organized them into a community of which she was dominant. Some authors identify Saint Baya with a Bee Colony. They might also be identical to Fred and Ethel.
:priest:
The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos, Día de los Difuntos or Día de Muertos in Spanish) is an ancient Aztec celebration of the memory of deceased ancestors that is celebrated on November 1 (All Saints’ Day) and November 2 (All Souls’ Day).
The holiday is especially popular in Mexico where it is a national holiday, and is celebrated in the Philippines, in Mexican-American communities in the United States, and to a lesser extent, in other Latin American countries. It is a public holiday in Brazil, where many Brazilians celebrate it by visiting cemeteries and churches, bringing flowers, lighting candles and praying.
Though the subject matter may be considered morbid from the Anglo perspective, Mexicans celebrate the Day of the Dead joyfully, and though it occurs at the same time as Halloween, All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day, the traditional mood is much brighter with emphasis on celebrating and honoring the lives of the deceased, and celebrating the continuation of life; the belief is not that death is the end, but rather the beginning of a new stage in life.

We have a proposition that protects pigs from inhumane treatment, ie providing pens large enough for the pigs to turn around. And the people I’ve been hearing against this prop completely ignore or sidestep whether or not keeping an animal in a crate too small to turn around is cruel. They try to say that veterinarian experts say that it’s not cruel and Goyette keeps insisting that any moron can see that it’s cruel. It has been a very contentious proposition.
Measure 37 is an ordinance that greatly enriches big money interests at taxpayers’ expense. The backers used the fears of small landowners to get it passed. Classic example of how power works in the political process. Big money interests frequently require the support of those with little power.
3Here is what 1000 Friends of Oregon wrote about Meausure 37:
Why We Are Opposed to Waivers of Zoning Protections
& No Public Process
1000 Friends of Oregon supports a fair land use system that strengthens the small town feel of our communities and the integrity of Oregon’s scenic landscapes and family farms. Consistent with this goal, we support an adequately funded system of compensation for property owners who have experienced individual hardship in the application of our state’s land use regulations. In fact, during the 2001 Legislative session we worked diligently on a bill to accomplish just that, only to see it scuttled at the eleventh hour by Oregonians In Action.
We believe Oregon voters approved Measure 37 with the understanding that they were voting for greater fairness in Oregon’s land use system. However, we believe Measure 37 also includes several provisions that are inherently unfair and toxic to the democratic process.
Measure 37 is an unfunded mandate with one clear objective: to rollback Oregon’s land use protections. The measure makes the false promise of payments to property owners, but local and state governments simply do not have the money for such payments. It is inherently unfair to authorize government to issue waivers arbitrarily for select property owners. In the absence of adequate funding, the effect of Measure 37 is to force government to issue such waivers. Furthermore, Measure 37 eliminates all normal notice and public hearing requirements so that affected neighbors and Oregon taxpayers remain in the dark and vulnerable to back room deal-making.
Vote for the pig protection proposition. I would like to see the day when the factory farm is abolished. Animal auschwitz.
and besides hurting the people, it ruins urban areas even when supposedly trying to improve them…
:pope:
Hmm, we have had some eminent domain abuse here and the prop focuses on that part. But it sounds like the devil is in the details.

The eminent domain fear is the bait to draw the normal people to support the measure. But the measure probably provides little protection to the little guy. Think Bush’s taxcuts. How much did you get? What was Bill Gates’s refund? Power relationships. You get it.
it’s going to benefit the wealthy, like everything else and do little to help the average citizen
We went to a screening of Sir No Sir! last night. It’s a very powerful film about the anti-war movement within the US Military (that is, the soldiers themselves) during Vietnam. It was quite eye-opening, and it made me realize that the Vietnam war was stopped more – much more – because soldiers finally became unwilling to take part in it, than by the any civilian peace movement, however well intentioned. Of course, support from the people back home was crucial. It also makes me realize that this Iraq bullshit will only end when our soldiers make the very courageous decision to stand down.
Another interesting thing was that the myth of the angry protester spitting on returning troops and calling them baby killers appears to be a crock of shit.
From what I’ve read, prop 207 (I think it is) in AZ provides for compensation if the government rezones property in such a way as to lower its value (generally, prohibits development), for other than “traditional” governmental objectives (exempted from requiring compensation, for example, are things like public health and safety, traffic control, water regulation, nuisances, and to compliance with federal regulations).
Proponents argue that, under current eminent domain laws, the government can avoid paying compensation by, rather than seizing property, just rezoning it.
I didn’t even know they had pigs in AZ (except for Jon Kyl, John McCain, etc.).
Yeah, that’s part of it PJ.
I think the pig prop affects one factory farm here.
What they should do is put the pig farm owners in a cage too small for them to turn around in, and, after a year, if they don’t think that’s cruel, well, fuck it, keep ’em in there then.
Yeah, That’s what I said too. What’s good for the pig is good for the long pig!

Re “eminent domain law”
I want The Ancient Redwood Forests to be seized under “Eminent Domain Laws and thus allowing NO FURTHER CUTTING — ALL FOR THE PUBLIC’S (aka for “children’s children”) FUTURE:yippee:
(even for those who does not want to or cannot get to the Forests  )
re 51 and 52 :yippee:
number 54 – Druid – protecting forests is not quite the same thing as eminent domain – though it is public domain – it falls into a different category somehow…people have not built property those areas, we’re trying to keep people from building there (which is quite different)…
I don’t think it’s a matter of it being already developed, just whether it’s privately (vs. publicly) owned. If it’s already public land then the jurisdiction that controls it (say, the state or the feds) can decide whether to allow clear cutting, etc.
That’s one complaint people supposedly have. They buy a chunk of land, intending to develop it, and then the government, rather than seizing it under eminent domain (in which case, they would have to compensate the owner), they rezone it as green space (or whatever), prohibiting it from being developed.
here under eminent domain … ocean property or even property in “special” places can be taken. I just say if people want to take a person’s land then let “us public” take charge and take back the Redwoods.
To me it makes sense, which means :fustrate: but all is a “dream” for me at this time  teehee 😉
Of course, private land that’s undeveloped is probably an odd notion to you city folks. 😉
Yeah, we have an interesting example here. Some clown built a really big shopping mall, and now he wants to expand it. Problem is, there was an existing tank farm (gasoline storage) there. So, he got the city to seize it under eminent domain (which they fought, ‘cuz they didn’t want to relocate). Somehow, that was considered in the “public good,” and the mall developer won.

Here’s today’s NYtimes editorial on the elephants who recognozed thier own image at the Bronx Zoo:
Editorial
Horton Sees an Image
To the very short list of animals that can recognize themselves in a mirror — i.e., humans and apes and possibly dolphins — scientists have now added the Asian elephant, or at least three female Asian elephants in the Bronx Zoo. Faced with the presence of an enormous — and rugged — full-length mirror in their enclosure, the animals displayed clear signs of grasping that they themselves were the origin of the images in the glass. One elephant, named Happy, was even able to touch a mark on her own face that was visible only in the mirror. It is still not known whether male elephants are as self-aware.
Such tests appear to mark a boundary between animals that display some form of consciousness and those that don’t. But what they really do is raise questions about the value we attribute to consciousness and our inevitably human definition of it. It is always us setting the rules. How many tests set by elephants could we pass?
Can we even pass the very simple test of allowing them to survive in the wild? The clear implication of the mirror test is that animals who pass it are somehow closer to us and thus more deserving of our protection. But as the fate of chimpanzees makes plain, we are no more likely to save species with a proto-human form of consciousness than animals whose mental life bears no resemblance to our own.
We keep probing the animal world for signs of intelligence — as we define it — and we’re always surprised when we discover it. This suggests that something is fundamentally wrong with our assumptions. There is every reason to value other life-forms as much for their difference from us as for their similarity, and to act accordingly. That may be the only intelligence test worthy of the name.
Yup, I don’t know. Later:doh:
“….the reality that most of the men and women fighting and dying for the US in the deserts and urban jungles of Iraq and Afghanistan are there, not because they are stupid or intellectually lazy, as Kerry said, but because they were too poor to pay for their college or to have their parents pay for their college the way Bush’s and Kerry’s parents did for them. They’re there because Bush and his Republican Congress have for six years slashed federal aid for higher education, driving students into ROTC programs, where they became easy pickings for Bush’s wars upon graduation. They’re also there because people like Bush and Kerry have conspired to encourage American firms to ship well-paying jobs overseas, leaving students with little but retail clerical work and waitering to help them pay their bills.”:fu: http://tinyurl.com/y85eh3

Bush “would understand” if Israel decides to Pearl Harbor Iran.
And I “would understand” if people start talking about the 25th Amendment.
I think an attack by anyone on Iran might result in a nuclear exchange between the aggressor and the Russians. Putin seems to be setting Russia up to take the SBR’s place in world affairs. With an aging bunch of ICBM’s the SBR is far behind the eight ball when it comes to retaliatory strike capability and if the weapons are already here sitting all over the country in containers that came from Singapore , Thailand , and even Argentina no one would know who to shoot back at ( assuming there was anyone still around to shoot back) . I think Iran is posturing to create conditions that will get the SBR blown off the face of the earth. :bf:

WASHINGTON – The productivity of American workers slowed to a standstill in the summer, while wages were rising at the fastest clip in more than two decades — a combination likely to raise inflation concerns at the
Federal Reserve.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that productivity, the amount of output per hour of work, showed no change in the July-September quarter, while labor costs rose by 3.8 percent. For the past year, wages and other labor costs are up by 5.3 percent, the fastest increase since 1982.
While rising wages and benefits are good news for workers, they raise concerns about inflation especially at a time when productivity is slowing. If companies decide to pass on their higher payroll costs by boosting the price of their products, that could translate into increased inflation.
In other economic news, orders to factories for manufactured products rose by 2.1 percent in September, the biggest increase in six months, but virtually all of the strength came in a surge in orders for commercial aircraft. The
Commerce Department said that orders for long-lasting durable goods were up 8.3 percent, offsetting a 4.6 percent drop in demand for food, gasoline and other nondurable products.

BAGHDAD, Oct. 31 — American soldiers rolled up their barbed-wire barricades and lifted a near siege of the largest Shiite Muslim enclave in Baghdad on Tuesday, heeding the orders of a Shiite-led Iraqi government whose assertion of sovereignty had Shiites celebrating in the streets.
The order by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to lift the week-old blockade of Sadr City was one of the most overt expressions of self-determination by Iraqi leaders in the 3 1/2 -year-old U.S. occupation. It followed two weeks of increasingly pointed exchanges between Iraqi and U.S. officials, as well as a video conference between Maliki and President Bush on Saturday.
Snip
The move lifted a near siege that had stood at least since last Wednesday. U.S. military police imposed the blockade after the kidnapping of an American soldier of Iraqi descent. The soldier’s Iraqi in-laws said they believed he had been abducted by the Mahdi Army as he visited his wife at her home in the Karrada area of Baghdad, where U.S. military checkpoints were also removed as a result of Maliki’s action.
The crackdown on Sadr City had a second motive, U.S. officers said: the search for Abu Deraa, a man considered one of the most notorious death squad leaders. The soldier and Abu Deraa both were believed by the U.S. military to be in Sadr City.

So, the vote hacking movie will highlight Bev Harris. Can anyone explain why Harris has (seemingly) lost favor with people like Randi Rhodes? Has she been discredited for overreaching. I just noticed that Bev Harris is never mentioned anywhere on AAR. I wonder if people like Palast and the Wasserman/Rosenberg gang will be in the movie. Brad Blog. Can anyone shed some light on the Bev Harris controversy?
Yeah Nicki, I’d like to know as well. Harris has been on this from day one, as far as I know before anyone else.
I heard the exchange between Harris and Rhodes. I recall that Randi asked some direct questions which the usually quick witted Harris was unwilling to answer. Prior to that, Harris was coming out with nearly incredible stories about the goings on in Ohio and Florida. Anyway, she has seemingly fallen off of the radar of late, while Palast and others have not. Oh well. I will try to find some answers.
Maybe this sheds some light:
Over the past two years Bev Harris has received a great deal of support from the members of Democratic Underground, in her research, publicity efforts, and fundraising. In return we have played host to an 18 month-long squabble between Ms. Harris and other verified voting activists, and have even been threatened with lawuits by Ms. Harris herself. Despite this, we have publicly remained mostly silent on the verified voting squabbles.

DUBAI: Saudi shares plunged to their lowest close in almost 20 months yesterday as retail investors scrambled for the door, extending the sharpest decline in the index since a Gulf Arab stock market crash ended in May.
Stocks across the world’s top oil exporting region took their cue from the Riyadh market, the Arab world’s largest, which has fallen almost 12% since it switched on Saturday to a single session and scrapped evening trading, a move which has upset retail investors.
The exchange now closes before most Saudis finish their working day, preventing many retail investors from trading directly on a market where mutual funds account for less than 5% of daily volumes.
“Unifying the trading session in Saudi sent the wrong signal to the market. It was perceived among retail investors that the (Saudi) Capital Markets Authority wants to get rid of retail investors, which is nonsense,” said Hani Baothman, chief executive of Saudi-based Aayan Capital.

I’ve said all along until a left-wing nut hacks the machines and swings it Democratic or Green, the thugs won’t do a damn thing about it. And while i’m on my soap box, I also have wagered that the israelis will take on iran. Ok, i better get down off this thing before i fall off.
That reminds me, well not really but anyway I was driving up the MoveOn HQ in Bryn Mawr and rethug driving past in his all white Escalade gave me the finger. I suspect he didn’t like the anti-bush stickers ib the rear window. So I returned the favor and lamented no longer having my 4 ton 1973 F-250 Camper Special so I could drive it right up his ass. I am sick to death of Rethug abuse
amen, andy. also discovered that even though by law each party who is on the ticket is supposed to be at each county for vote verification but, the thugs won’t let the dems in some counties!
Also, a friend of mine works in a flower shop and yesterday a woman thug called and said that if everyone in that shop did not vote straight repub, she and all her friends would take their business elsewhere. Unreal. I’m hearing all kinds of crap down here.
Brilliant – i didn’t know he was a meth user, too! HA!
Hey FK, there was a caller on Sam’s show this morning, I only caught the last bit of it, but basically he was saying he was no longer going to take any crap and if a thug got in his face, he would take his teeth out! I don’t know if that was legit or just a bit.
Lets hope that the economic news doesn’t 1929 us in December .. Having a thug as disctaordorop and a Dem congress would be just backward from the days of FDR .. We can’t afford the “real” economy to go down the tubes any more than it has. That might lead to political unrest .:bf::gate::omg:
Are you refering to pigs or repigs ??:yuck:
Oops liberals are nice people :bf:
I’m nice people 😐
OH NO
LONGMONT — President George W. Bush has been campaigning for Republicans all week, and Saturday morning he’s coming to Greeley.
Partisans on both sides disagree on whether a presidential visit will help or hurt Colorado Republicans.
At his stops in Sugar Land, Texas, and Statesboro, Ga., the president rallied the Republican troops while bashing Democratic candidates.
Bush is stumping for Republican incumbent Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, 4th Congressional District, and gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez. A host of other statewide and local candidates also will attend the rally, which starts at 10 a.m.
…
Shaun Kenney, campaign manager for Musgrave, said people requesting tickets do not have to be Republicans. He said the campaign will hand tickets out to Democrats and unaffiliated voters who support Republican candidates and the president.
“We’ll know our own,” he said. “It’s an imprecise science.”

Just as long as the “new persons” are not in India or China :bf:

Keeping things fair and balanced
The leader of one of Colorado’s most popular mega-churches, Ted Haggard, said his church would investigate allegations from a male prostitute that Haggard solicited gay sex, 9News reported Wednesday.
.
.
Male escort Mike Jones of Denver started talking to 9 Wants to Know two months ago, making claims that he has had a three-year sexual business relationship with Haggard, the station reported.
.
.
The station spoke to Haggard outside his home in Colorado Springs, and he fervently denied the allegations. Haggard is married and has five children.
.
.
Haggard has been one of the major proponents for a state constitutional ban on gay marriage.

And what would one expect Teddy boy to say ??
We are very leery of the short Chinese guy in his baggy pants that visits us every two months or so and takes notes and tells us how they do the same process in Singapore.:eek:

LOL. Would you like to be beaten up?
I just happened to be fooling around with different emos, no rhyme or reason to it
Oh, okay. Don’t beat me up, please! I can’t take the abuse…:omg:
I spent most of my wrath on an eight-year old earlier, don’t worry. And anything I have left is for those damn Nick Spano people (Republican politician) who keep sending me shit by my door

Ok..this Hacking Democracy is the exact film that was shown on Blackboxvoting.org (or was it .com?) if my memory can be trusted.
I saw this right after the 2004 elections-watched it online.:knit:
So I find it interesting that this film is “released” four days before an election. The film has been finished for almost two years.
Do you think it may have a “why bother?” effect on voter turnout?
Bev Harris’s hair has been three different colors 20 minutes into the piece.:omg::tinfoil:
:yuck:bev harris!
It is a new, improved version of the post-04 film. People do not seem to be that concerned. What did Noam Chomsky say in response to 2000 election? “{The people are not doing anything] [b]ecause they don’t give a fuck.”
I am all for getting people to start giving a fuck.
