Friday, leading up to the last weekend before the election. If you’re trying to figure out what to do besides go out and vote, you can find some ideas here, or of course you can sign up to call for change (OK, I think I’m done with that one now). And of course be sure to vote for at least one candidate that has no chance of winning, so you can be all smug and like “don’t blame me, man, I voted for Howie.” Just try not to do it in any close races, ‘cuz we need Republicans in office about as much as we need tax relief for billionaires (one exception is in CT, of course, where if you’re a Republican, you should go out and vote for Schlesinger).
If you’re out there in the LA area, you’ve got a couple of chances to see Marc tonight, both at the UCB theater. At 8:00, it’s the God Sux Show, and at 11:00, it’s the Election Show (damn, just can’t away from this election, can we). No mention from Sammy yesterday if Marc’ll be on his show this morning, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Or hear.
Otherwise, have a good Friday. Now I guess I’d better go look out the window and see if we got any of that lake effect snow they were talking about.

Hacking Democracy was on HBO last night. They usually repeat the documentaries on other HBO stations. It’s a good black box primer. I think Randi was upset with Bev Harris over money issues (not completely sure about that) but man, Harris has done a ton of leg work and you have to hand it her.
here’s the schedule for Hacking Democracy if anyone wants to see it.

hi Druid :pent: Need to stream some radio and news…
Early last year, two little-known nonprofit groups paid for Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.) and his 12-year-old daughter to travel to South Korea and Malaysia. Their last stop was the Berjaya Beach & Spa Resort on the Malaysian island of Langkawi, where they bunked at an oceanfront chalet staffed with a personal butler, got massages and rode water scooters on Burau Bay.
Doolittle’s junket, which cost $29,400, was among the most expensive privately sponsored trips by members of Congress in recent years. The two groups that split the bills were not ordinary nonprofits. They were fronts for vigorous lobbying campaigns bankrolled by foreign entities and were operated by a Washington lobbying firm, Alexander Strategy Group, according to public records and people who worked with the firm.

HBO fired back at Diebold Election Systems on Thursday, defending its documentary “Hacking Democracy” from accusations of shoddy filmmaking.
In a letter to Diebold president David Byrd, HBO contends that accusations of factual errors and unfairness are unwarranted (HR 11/1).
“You assert in your letter that the documentary contains ‘significant factual errors’; however, based on several of the purported examples you have cited, you do not appear to have viewed the film which will premiere on HBO on Nov. 2,” HBO attorney Peter Rienecker wrote in a letter dated Wednesday. “HBO stands by the accuracy and fairness of the documentary. Of course, if after viewing the film on the HBO service (Thursday night) you continue to have concerns, we would be happy to discuss them with you at that time.”

M$NBC Breaking Jobless rate fell to 4.4 percent in October, the lowest in five years.
They must use Diebolt software to compute this:yuck::rant1:
I wonder if the demodorps will come to grips with the actual number or if they will continue to live in la la land :gate::omg:
after the election they’ll say they made a mistake in the number and revise it.
Remember, they don’t count people who are out of work and no longer looking.
They also don’t count people who have never been employed like probably 3 million college graduates and who knows how many others since Bush took office.:bf:
Do they get those numbers from people signing up at the unemployment office? I haven’t gone there since I moved back.
When you work as a contractor and don’t hold a job for three consecutive( or equivalent) quarters you can’t apply for unemployment insurance either.:bf:
OK, here’s some useless trivia for ya. Today is the birthday of Bob Feller (he pitched three no-hitters; my mom got me his autograph once, though I really couldn’t give a shit about baseball), Charles Bronson (probably forever known for Deathwish, but I remember him better for the Dirty Dozen), Ken Berry (personally, I think his career peaked in F-Troop), Aneta Corsaut Jutchinson (what, you don’t remember Helen Crump from Andy Griffith?), Michael Dukakis (looked a lot like Snoopy driving a tank), Ken Holtzman (2 no-hitters, but I still don’t care about baseball), Lulu (you know, “To Sir With Love”), Larry Holmes, Michael Evans (Lionel – the original and final one, from All in the Family and The Jeffersons), Roseanne, Dennis Miller (icky), Adam Ant, and Phil Simms.
It’s also the day that Annie Oakley died (in 1926), and Mary Martin (in 1990), too. Jack the Ripper killed his last victim (that we know of, anyway), on November 3rd in 1888. CBS ran the Wizard of Oz on TV for the first time in 1956. A group of Iranian students took 63 Americans hostage at the US embassy in Tehran on Nov 3, 1979. In 1984, an anti-Sikh riot that lasted three days left some 3,000 people dead.
A buncha presidents were elected on November 3rd, including, US Grant, McKinley, Taft, FDR stomped Alf Landon, LBJ beat Barry Goldwater, and Bill Clinton beat daddy Bush in 1992.
Oh, there’s more, but I’ll leave it at that.
We have an old black & white autographed photo of Feller shaking I think his manager’s hand, and it reads “To Jack, Best Wishes, Bob Feller 1938.” I was to my Uncle.
They use the number of people on unemployment insurance and some statistical sample to compute the number of “loosely attached” workers .. The system apparently isn’t set up to count people who have stopped looking that is “discouraged workers” or the young people (recent high school and college graduates and those who have dropped out) that have never had a job.
The unemployment rates count the military, and only count people applying for unemployment benefits. If you’re out of benefits, you don’t count as being unemployed. They also don’t tell you anything about people who have had to take jobs paying far less than they used to make. The irony is that Republicans hate low unemployment rates, because it (in theory, anyway) makes for a tighter labor market and drives wages up. That’s why we need a steady supply of illegal immigrants that can forced to to work for shit wages and in shit conditions. The key is to keep their status illegal so that they can be threatened with deportation if they start thinking they ought to be treated with decency.
The demodorps should offer extended unemployment benefits and see if they have 8 million applications in the first week.
:tommygun:for fred 2

U.S. Web Archive Is Said to Reveal a Nuclear Primer
Last March, the federal government set up a Web site to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war. The Bush administration did so under pressure from Congressional Republicans who had said they hoped to “leverage the Internet” to find new evidence of the prewar dangers posed by Saddam Hussein.
But in recent weeks, the site has posted some documents that weapons experts say are a danger themselves: detailed accounts of Iraq’s secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war. The documents, the experts say, constitute a basic guide to building an atom bomb.
Last night, the government shut down the Web site after The New York Times asked about complaints from weapons experts and arms-control officials. A spokesman for the director of national intelligence said access to the site had been suspended “pending a review to ensure its content is appropriate for public viewing.”
Officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency, fearing that the information could help states like Iran develop nuclear arms, had privately protested last week to the American ambassador to the agency, according to European diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the issue’s sensitivity. One diplomat said the agency’s technical experts “were shocked” at the public disclosures.
The documents, roughly a dozen in number, contain charts, diagrams, equations and lengthy narratives about bomb building that nuclear experts who have viewed them say go beyond what is available elsewhere on the Internet and in other public forums. For instance, the papers give detailed information on how to build nuclear firing circuits and triggering explosives, as well as the radioactive cores of atom bombs. (emphasis added)

CAPE GIRARDEAU — The prophets of the Hebrew scriptures are known for their warnings of doom and gloom, but even Jeremiah — arguably the gloomiest Old Testament sage — would have tipped his hat to the Rev. David Clippard at the Missouri Baptist Convention’s annual meeting here this week.
In his opening address Monday night at Southeast Missouri State’s Show Me Center, Clippard sounded off about a number of issues facing the state’s 600,000 members, from a dwindling number of young churchgoers to the evils of embryonic stem cell research to falling contributions for international mission trips.
Clippard is the executive director of the state Convention, a fellowship of 2,000 congregations who cooperate with the 16-million member Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. Baptist churches that are members of the Southern Baptist Convention operate autonomously, but cooperate on many issues. Sen. Jim Talent, R.-Mo., and Richard Land, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, are scheduled to address the meeting today.
Clippard reserved his strongest words for what he said he considered paramount for all Americans: the threat of Islam. “Today, Islam has a strategic plan to defeat and occupy America,” he told the 1,200-strong crowd of delegates (called “messengers”), pastors and lay people, many of whom cheered his words.

This season, though, that tactic has proved to be poisonous for the candidates who’ve employed it. http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2006/12/neocons200612
Here’s the last few lines of the neocon piece in Vanity Fair. It’s a quote from Eliot Cohen:
“…So in a real pinch, we can still pull ourselves together. Unfortunately, it will probably take another big hit. And a very different quality of leadership. Maybe we’ll get it.”
Be afraid. :reaper: Be very afraid. :reaper:
Because they never look at themselves the NEVER learn.
:reaper: they can not govern :reaper:
… MoveOn.org and the liberal blogsphere like DailyKos would never engage in a debate about the legitimacy of building an independent antiwar movement, let alone a third party. Instead they’d rather throw their energy into campaigns like Ned Lamont’s disaster in Connecticut. Since Ned defeated Sen. Lieberman in the primary he has changed his tune on Iraq from reasonable opposition to all-out war hawk. But that’s where working within the Democratic Party will get you: nowhere.
So perhaps it is not “why” Peace Now and others in the liberal establishment have silenced antiwar candidates, but “how”. We know why: they are professional liberals who see the Democratic Party as an indispensable ally in the quest for grants, careers and cocktail party networking.
However, the more theoretical among these liberal careerists have a popular front philosophy: where they align with the liberal bourgeoisie against the reactionary capitalists. But when push comes to shove the liberals of the ruling elite always prefer repression to democracy — something ol’ Karl Marx recognized during the 1848 democratic revolutions in Europe and the Left in the US should have recognized when the industrial wing of the Republican Party sabotaged Radical Reconstruction last century.
But that may be a bit too analytical for such an obvious crisis: the Democrats and their patrons are part of the problem, not the solution.
Joshua Frank
http://brickburner.blogs.com/my_weblog/
I didn’t realize Lamont changed his stance on the war.
well the “Liberal” blogosphere is really the Democratic blogsophere, for the most part, so no, they’re not going to encourage third party discussion. they’re antiwar for the most part (or anti Iraq war) but they’re often mamby pamby about how to express that sentiment
Ah, Joshua Frank. :rofl2:
hey everyone….just got in…

I liked the video but I might be scared to see the movie
Hey, Im not aware that Ned has changed his stanceon the war at all…..Im gonna email his people and find out, because its something that would be very big around here if he did. His whole campaign is built around opposition to the war.
I’m really curious also
Why?
How is Lamont doing in the polls?
because I just like to know what local candidates positions are on certain issues?
I don’t feel so good
what did you think of the story I sent?
blog killer :jason:
Well, Lamont has been a staunch anti war candidate and if hes changed, its big news. I just wrote his stamford person and should have some sorta answer by tomorrow am….I actually expect that she is working but I think Im gonna go to sleep.
The last zogby poll that I reported on my blog a day ro two ago had only a 5 point spread with Joe in the lead…but its within the margin of error and the schlesinger dude republican guy is very interesting…Are repubs coming out at all? Will they vote for Joe? Will they vote for the republican? How can they send Joe unless they are sure that Bush will appoint him out, because he is so slimy that he will likley go with the stronger dems as they take over…so, as a tiebreaker he is not a sure thing…
Another poll I saw today said 10 points…with Joe in the lead…
I honestly dont know how polls can work at all in this atmosphere. People are afraid that the govt is listening in on their calls…a young girl aorund here or somewhere got a secret service visit a couple of weeks ago for writing kill bush on her myspace…its not like people want to talk about anything in public….
But if youre wearing a button they approach warily and ask questions or just want to rant a little. I am one of the very few who have bumper stickers and buttons, so people tend to talk to me….everyone…its pretty crazy….
Im interested in seeing how the polls match up to the vote.
well, thats the lamont story for this evening….
suz, someday maybe you’ll get tired of someone being so rude to you in a public forum….
sorry…
MyDD reports that Lieberman is running well ahead of Lamont (8-10%). But thinks the race will tighten up over the weekend.
Corker is increasing the margin over Harold Ford. Does that mean the Klan tactics work?
The Tennessee thing scares me…
fuck it I just want to use this :spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank:
:spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank::spank: take that Corker!
I can kick butt
:omg:
he is not rude to me! He wanted me to explain my interest in Lamont
don’t you say anything about him or I’ll :jason::jason::jason::jason:
you. Stay where you are.
I have some serious business to attend to
BE AFRAID
Kerry’s Comment and the Democrat’s Class Problem:
[…]No, Kerry did not mean to say that U.S. soldiers deserve to be in Iraq because they are stupid or uneducated or lazy – because they didn’t work hard in college. He knows very well that relatively few of the nation’s mainly poor and working-class troops have ever attended colleges or universities and that many of them enlisted in the military with the hope of attaining college tuition assistance. Of course Kerry was referring to George W. Bush as the person who didn’t “make the effort to be smart” therefore got “stuck in Iraq.”
The charge by Team Bush and John McCain that Kerry took a “shameful” slap at the soldiers ordered into Bush’s war is transparent, politically motivated deception. It reflects standard operating procedure for a Republican Party that tarred the triple amputee Vietnam veteran Max Cleland as insufficiently patriotic.
But even if Kerry had included those deleted four words (“just ask President Bush”), his word choice would still have left more than a little to be desired in ways that reflect an all-too common elitist Democratic disregard for – and clumsiness about – class divisions in the U.S., the industrialized world’s most unequal and wealth-top-heavy society. That indifference and inelegance creates dangerous new opportunities for the more truly vicious and corporate-plutocratic business party (the G.O.P.) to ironically wrap itself in the deceptive flag of populist rebellion…

Mistress Joy! :omg:
Kerry wasn’t talking about the troops. He was talking about George Bush, and it was a joke, and George Bush makes jokes about whatever he pleases, including that he would like to be dictator of the USA. If it pleases Kerry to tell a joke about Bush, then he can tell a joke about Bush.
I am powerful :pent:
Kerry made a slightly insensitive statement. The proverbial speck in the eye as opposed to the huge log (in the eye of Bush)..
Maron is now on KPOJ. “My cat has a vomitting problem?”
http://www.620kpoj.com/main.html
Bush is never answerable to anything he says, that’s what gets me sick. Kerry’s gaffe was no big deal in comparison.
“Nothing gets you closer to Jesus than crank.”
:rabbi:
:rabbi: is how NR is going to look when I finish my art
I thought this :rabbi: was supposed to be Maron. (Or at least Rabbi Schneerson.)
it can be Maron, yes. the other person will have his own unique look
yeah, this was from an earlier show which I missed…
“The candidates with money can create ads that are designed to make stupid people vote.”
:rabbi:
Yes. This morning’s show. Tyger Thom is on Morning Drive on KPOJ.
the middle class…whatever that is…poor people with credit (or not, Marc)
ok this caller is going to make me sick
Mike from Austin caller. He is an idiot. Silent majority will come out to vote.
Speaking truth to the ignorant, Marc. “You people are zombies.”
the silent majority that are too crazy even for Rush Limbaugh? eeeee
:rofl2:
“I do not believe God is telling him to vote Republican!”
The idea that any god would even support a political party (or nation, for that matter) is ludicrous.
no faith in democracy. No of course not, they want a theocracy
He said “self hatred”.
:rofl2:
yes, he did, damn Jew… :sdavid::tongue:
Render unto Caesar…
:jesus:
BUT he was referring to Rev. Haggard.
:priest:
:sdavid::jesus:
Interesting commercials on this station (more so than the AA stream I normally listen to)
it applies to that Haggard more probably. Marc isn’t really self hating, he’s just nervous and neurotic
I know. I was joking about the use of the phrase. Remember Beavis and Butthead? “He said “member'”. :rofl2:
The term “self-hating” means something quite different when it is used by a zionist as opposed to when Maron (and everyone) uses it.
yeah, I was finally called self hating on the Jew Crew, so I decided not to post there anymore.
Yes. Beevis and Butthead “he said wood”
Slam those zionist neocons right back. Throw some Israel Shahak stuff at them.
I did stuff like that. I was just insulted. It wasn’t a regular who got on my case but nobody came to my defense . I just left.
gagged DLC goth :peace:
Jay Marvin will be on Al Franken’s show. Al called him “Jay Marvin from Air America Colorado.” I like JM. Regular guy.
Yes, you did. :rofl2:
I heard that on Al’s show today. yeah, I think Jay Marvin has filled in for people and he’s pretty good
I should join up with Jew Crew. How would I be labeled, self-annihilating?
:rabbi::tommygun:
SMASH Zionism!
:reaper: teehee
I like it when local liberals come aboard AAR.
You’d be branded an enemy. I don’t think they’d kick you out, but they’d have major issues with you…
Bernie Sanders is on Tyger Thom’s show now.
I like to hear new voices on AA in general.
Would they call the ADL on me?
Yeah, Bernie says the same thing every time he’s on Thom’s show, so I pretty much have it memorized
Thom moved from Vermont to Oregon…Oregon is the happenin place!
Brunch with Bernie! :omg:
they would be mean and stupid :bf::fu:
bagels with Bernard
:pirate:
whoa
I have to jump in the bath.
I switched to Franken. Colorado action.
the first was more appropriate :rofl2:
ooo bath
You have the monopoly on that.
I bought a 16/20 in. canvas for the CAT fundraiser painting.
yes. I took that as a request 🙂
I’m glad you’re starting a painting!
From Mumia Abu-Jamal’s Lead counsel, Robert Bryan –
Dear Friends: On October 4, 2006, our Reply Brief in response to the briefs submitted by the district attorney will be filed on behalf of Mumia Abu-Jamal in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Philadelphia. This is pursuant to a September 1 court order. We continue to aggressively pursue relief for Mr. Abu-Jamal. On July 20, Professor Judith L. Ritter, associate counsel, and I filed a lengthy opening brief supported by voluminous exhibits. A week later NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., through Christine Swarns filed an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief. A separate amicus curiae brief was filed for the National Lawyers Guild by Jill Soffiyah Elijah of the Harvard Law School, Professor Zachary Wolfe of George Washington University Law School, and Heidi Boghosian, its Executive Director. They were joined by the National Conference of Black Lawyers, International Association of Democratic Lawyers, Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice of Harvard Law School, Southern Center for Human Rights, and the National Jury Project. These amicus briefs greatly strengthen our quest to protect the constitutional rights of Mr. Abu-Jamal and secure a reversal. This case concerns my client’s right to a fair trial, and the struggle against the death penalty and the political repression of an outspoken journalist. Racism and politics are threads that have run through this case since his 1981 arrest. The issues under consideration by the court are complex and of great significance under the United States Constitution, include:
1. Whether Mr. Abu-Jamal was denied the right to due process of law and a fair trial under the Fifth, Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments because of the prosecutor’s “appeal after appeal” argument that called upon the jurors to disregard the right to the presumption of innocence and reasonable doubt, and err on the side of guilt.
2. Whether the prosecutor’s use of peremptory challenges to exclude African Americans from sitting on the jury violated Mr. Abu-Jamal’s right to due process and equal protection of the law under the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments and contravened the prohibition against racism in jury selection held in Batson v. Kentucky, 476 U.S. 79 (1986).
3. Whether the verdict form and jury instructions that resulted in the death penalty deprived Mr. Abu-Jamal of rights guaranteed by the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments to due process of law, equal protection of the law, and not to be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, and violated Mills v. Maryland, 486 U.S. 367 (1988), since the judge precluded jurors from considering any mitigating evidence unless they all agreed on the existence of a particular special circumstance.
4. Whether Mr. Abu-Jamal was denied due process and equal protection of the law under the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments during post-conviction proceedings as a result of the bias of Judge Albert F. Sabo which included the statement that he was going to “help’em fry the ni – – er”.
The case continues to move rapidly. Once the briefing phase is complete, we will present oral argument before a three-judge panel in the U.S. Court of Appeals. I will notify you when a date is eventually set.
Our purpose is to win this life-and-death struggle, gain a new and fair trial, and see our client walk out of jail a free person. However, Mr. Abu-Jamal remains in great danger. We must redouble our efforts to prevent his execution.
Thank you for your concern in this campaign for justice.
With best wishes,
Robert R. Bryan

It was cold outside, and I was tired from holiday shopping. I had just lit the candle in the menorah for the third night of Hannukah and plugged in my tiny Yule tree (all pagan Jews raise their hands!). My thoughts were indeedbah humbug. Dull presents, people I didn’t want to see, and no True Meaning…
was more like an apocalyptic battle in the sky…
As I was examining the details of this, I heard a thud on the roof above me…
.
..”even though it’s not yours. and then you can go to your DLC conference. I need to do
“Who are you?” I demanded imperiously.
