Is anyone else nervous about this election? Between the downfall of the Head Christofascist Zombie, rigged voting machines, voter suppression, an insane president, and the military calling for Rumsfeld’s ouster, things could get ugly. :paranoid:
Morning, all. Things ARE ugly. I’m hoping, perhaps in vain, that they will get better.
I saw that stupid psychopath, Chaney, last night. He said it didn’t matter what the American people or anyone else thought about the war, the Bushies were going keep on keeping on, as usual.
And, these are the people who deem themselves patriots.
He seemed quite mystified about why the other neocons are turning against the war.
The Bush administration has told a federal judge that terrorism suspects held in secret CIA prisons should not be allowed to reveal details of the “alternative interrogation methods” that their captors used to get them to talk.
The government says in new court filings that those interrogation methods are now among the nation’s most sensitive national security secrets and that their release — even to the detainees’ own attorneys — “could reasonably be expected to cause extremely grave damage.” Terrorists could use the information to train in counter-interrogation techniques and foil government efforts to elicit information about their methods and plots, according to government documents submitted to U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton on Oct. 26.

Nuclear Lab Breach Could Be ‘Devastating’
CBS News Exclusive: Data Found In Drug Raid Contains Weapons-Design Secrets
CBS) The recent security breach at Los Alamos National Laboratory was very serious, with sensitive materials being taken out of the facility — possibly including information on how to deactivate locks on nuclear weapons, officials tell CBS News.
Officials say there is no evidence the information taken from Los Alamos was sold or transferred to anybody else, but there is no way to be sure right now.

As Westchester Republicans wage election battles this year, they are not only competing against Democratic opponents, but also a surging disparity in party enrollment that’s nearing 100,000 voters.
Democrats, as of Oct. 31, outnumbered Republicans in Westchester by more than 98,900 voters, according to the county Board of Elections.
The figures show that the disparity between the two parties jumped by nearly 4,000 voters in just the past year, further complicating the GOP’s effort to maintain a presence in a county it once dominated.
“The Democratic voter surge over the past decade is historic and overwhelming in Westchester County,” said James Maisano, a Republican county legislator from New Rochelle. “There is no question that this is now a solidly Democratic county and all Republicans have to face this difficult tide.”

There are a lot of moderate Republicans that can’t handle the the shift to the Reich..( rethugs assume things never change so the view point that was valid in 1960 should still be valid today) so looking at platforms they find that the democrats have a 1980s style moderate rethug position .. Does that makes them real democrats ( that is a party of the people).??.:yuck::eek::crap::reaper::paranoid:
what is a “real” Democrat? It varies from year to year and depends on your spin.
I just do not understand how ANY DEM could vote for a republican. Yet Arnold is ahead in CA :omg: :fist: HaaaYaaa :slap:
We have to just take over the Democrats :yippee::growl:…:tommygun:
In NYC area a lot of registered Democrats vote for Republicans in local politics. In national elections they’ll be more partisan. The main reason probably: most local Republicans are more moderate than their national counterparts on certain issues, and many New Yorkers are really somewhat in the center as opposed to left or right (that goes for Dems and republicans)

Six Arab states join rush to go nuclear
By Richard Beeston, Diplomatic Editor
Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, UAE and Saudi Arabia seek atom technology
THE SPECTRE of a nuclear race in the Middle East was raised yesterday when six Arab states announced that they were embarking on programmes to master atomic technology.
The move, which follows the failure by the West to curb Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, could see a rapid spread of nuclear reactors in one of the world’s most unstable regions, stretching from the Gulf to the Levant and into North Africa.
The countries involved were named by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE have also shown interest.
All want to build civilian nuclear energy programmes, as they are permitted to under international law. But the sudden rush to nuclear power has raised suspicions that the real intention is to acquire nuclear technology which could be used for the first Arab atomic bomb.

The democratic party machine in a lot of places is so impotent that they can’t raise the money necessary to run a non self financed candidate so they run Whoever that no one has ever heard of or can relate to.
That’s why the democrats are the third largest party in Colorado .. The voters couldn’t handle the smell from either side.
all is logical to people who feel they’re voting in their interest and by issues – which to me was always the most sensible way to vote. My values are progressive so that’s the way I go, but I tend not to look at the party affiliation so much as what I think the candidate is all about. I don’t care for the idea of political parties and I care about loyalty to one even less
The voter who votes for the person that best represents their views is why the Independents are the second largest party in Colorado. They can be counted on to vote either way and do so in almost every election.. Except this year..:rant1:

I can’t get all weepy about California; I just think one-party rule is a shitty idea, no matter where it is. NY City included. The Cal. democratic party richly deserves the state-wide losses its going to get on Tuesday, just as the Karl Rove/Abramoff GOP party deserves to reap the whirlwind nationally.
Maybe “Ah-Nold’s” success in Callly Fornia, derived from working with a Democratic assembly, will spawn some imitators, and as Bush becomes steadily more irrelevant, [and Iraq will end some day, probably sooner than we think], maybe we get a re-birth of the center-right realist wing of the Repug party. McCain, once he reclaims his balls at the front office, would be a logical leader of such a party. Of course I wouldn’t support these guys, but compared to having one of our major parties run by savages, this would be a great development. Remember: people like Souter and Earl Warren were Republicans.
Let the Bible Thumpers go form their own group, left behind indeed, and led by that loony ten commandments guy, assisted by child-molesters and closeted preachers [this is the “behind” part of “left behind”]. Hell, I’d donate money to McCain for such a project to free the Party of Lincoln from the cracker talibanis. And give it back to the greed financiers and owners of used car lots, where it belongs.

phone banking to the independents was bad enough – you call from the list, can think about how to say their name before you dial, etc. Today it is supposed to be very fast and the name pops up on a screen and you have to just go go go. Should be interesting! The positive thing is, the people SHOULD be dems so it’s a get out the vote thing. That will make it easier. (she crosses her fingers.)

MYDD Brief on CT Senate Race:
I heard today that an internal poll showed the race within three points, for example. I have also heard that Schlesinger’s internals show a performance of over 20% possible, which would pretty much finish off Lieberman for certain, since Lieberman’s lead is predicated almost entirely on Republicans and conservative independents. While polls have consistently shown Lieberman in front, the slush fund story is gained some traction, and Lamont still has his fabulous ground game. Lieberman has to be favored right now, but this race is far form over.

Harris’ Prayer Call Stirs Concerns
By WILLIAM MARCH The Tampa Tribune
Published: Nov 4, 2006
TAMPA – U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, who has made past comments that raised questions about her religious sensitivity, prayed in a telephone prayer service recently that God would “bring the hearts and minds of our Jewish brothers and sisters into alignment.”
“We just decree and declare there will be a shift for this nation, that there will be an enormous revival, even a revolution as we speak,” she prayed. “Once again, we’ll rejoice, rejoice with your Son and bring this nation into alignment with your government with your kingdom principles and authority.”
She added, “And Father God, right now on the day after the Jewish new year, Father, after the day after atonement, as they enter into their new year, Father God, I just pray that you would bring the hearts and minds of our Jewish brothers and sisters into alignment.” She prayed for the safety of Israel, “your sacred nation, Father.”
She closed by saying that after the coming “shift” or revival, “Once again we’ll rejoice, rejoice with your Son and bring this nation into alignment with your government with your kingdom principals and authority.”
Campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Marks said Harris’ reference to alignment of Jews meant that “the Jewish community historically voted Democratic. She was expressing her hope that the Jewish voters will recognize that she shares their ethics and values.”

Why then, with the Republicans on the verge of losing control of both the House and the Senate, would they train such a lengthy, hysterical and vicious attack on Kucinich?
The answer is obvious: Kucinich is in line to chair the Government Oversight subcommittee on International Relations, National Security and Emerging Threats, which will bring out the truth about each and every Administration lie which led us into war, into fear, into a roll back of our civil liberties. Under his chairmanship, people in Washington will at last be held accountable for their misdeeds. The truth will come out about 911, the war in Iraq and how the Administration’s policies and actions have directly put America in more danger.
Now is the time for us to stand up to the GOP smear machine. Now is the time to stand up for Dennis Kucinich…

The Senator miscued a joke about Bush by reading without the “us” in the line, “You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush.” The missing of the “us” word gave the messianic militarists an opening to demand that Kerry apologize to the U.S. troops for his “insulting” and “shameful” remarks.
Interesting isn’t it, how a mis-reading of a word can be seen as cause for apology when thousands of illegal and destructive deeds and tortures constitute the Bush regime’s “business as usual.”
There will likely be no apologies from Bush/Cheney for putting U.S. soldiers into a fabricated war-quagmire–a disastrous, costly boomeranging invasion. But to set the record straight about who should apologize, here are on the ground reasons for nine Bush/Cheney mea culpas…”

I’ve spent the last half-hour searching online, both Kucinich’s and Dovilla’s websites, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon Journal, and several other locations, with no luck. I was reassured, however, that Ted Strickland is continuing to kick Ken Blackwell’s evil ass. Strickland needs to win big enough so that Blackwell can’t rig the results to tip in his favor.
I’ll probably talk to my dad over the weekend. He lives closer to Youngstown than Cleveland, but he’s been a Kucinich fan since his days as Cleveland mayor (Kucinich, not my dad), so he’ll probably know. I won’t be able to post until Monday, though, as noted in the outburst above (mine, not Susan’s). 🙂
As Kucinich noted in his mailing, when the Dems take back the House he may be in line for a subcommittee chair, which is why the Repigs are turning up the heat. If people like Kucinich and Conyers can gain subpoena power, 2007 could turn out to be quite an interesting year.

Disgraced pastor fired by church
RAW STORY
Published: Saturday November 4, 2006
Embattled Evangelical Rev. Ted Haggard, who admitted yesterday to purchasing methamphetamines and soliciting a ‘massage’ from a gay escort, has been removed from his position at the New Life Church, according to a statement released by the church on Saturday.
While Haggard announced a leave of absence from the New Life Church on Friday, he was officially fired by the church board Saturday afternoon.
Excerpts from the New Life Church statement:
#
“We, the Overseer Board of New Life Church, have concluded our deliberations concerning the moral failings of Pastor Ted Haggard. Our investigation and Pastor Haggard’s public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct.
The language of our church bylaws state that as Overseers we must decide in cases where the Senior Pastor has “demonstrated immoral conduct” whether we must “remove the pastor from his position or to discipline him in any way they deem necessary.”
In consultation with leading evangelicals and experts familiar with the type of behavior Pastor Haggard has demonstrated, we have decided that the most positive and productive direction for our church is his dismissal and removal. In addition, the Overseers will continue to explore the depth of Pastor Haggard’s offense so that a plan of healing and restoration can begin.
Pastor Haggard and his wife have been informed of this decision. They have agreed as well that he should be dismissed and that a new pastor for New Life Church should be selected according to the rules of replacement in the bylaws. That process will begin immediately in hopes that a new pastor can be confirmed by the end of the year 2006. In the interim, Ross Parsley will function as the leader of the church with full support of the Overseers.
A letter of explanation and apology by Pastor Haggard as well as a word of encouragement from Gayle Haggard will be read in the 9:00 and 11:00 service of New Life Church.”

positive political ad? What’s that? :omg:
By Matea Gold, Times Staff Writer

NEW YORK — Haunted by the bungled calls and leaked information that plagued the coverage of the last three nationwide elections, networks are taking no chances when it comes to Tuesday’s midterm.
This time around, the members of the National Election Pool — a consortium of five broadcast and cable networks and the Associated Press that commissions exit polls of the major races — have decided to sequester two analysts from each news organization in a secret “quarantine room” in New York, where they alone will get access to the first waves of data from precincts around the country.
Stripped of their cellphones and BlackBerrys — and even monitored when they use the bathroom — the representatives will be able to study the results of the surveys but will not be allowed to communicate them to their newsrooms until 5 p.m. EST. They must sign affidavits guaranteeing that they will not reveal any data before then.
The drastic measures are necessary, news executives said, to prevent the leaks that occurred in the 2004 presidential race, when early exit poll results indicating that Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) was in the lead rocketed through cyberspace.

Military Times Newspapers Call for Bush to Fire Donald Rumsfeld
By Scott Lanman
Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) — A group of military-targeted trade publications is calling on President George W. Bush to fire Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, citing a lack of support from military leaders over the Iraq war.
“The time has come, Mr. President, to face the hard bruising truth,” said an editorial appearing in the Nov. 13 issues of Gannett Co.’s weekly Military Times newspapers, which include the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times. “Donald Rumsfeld must go.”

First Murtha and now the military press.. The VFW will be totally confused .. Murtha speaks for the active duty officers and these publications speak for and to the retired military.. Rummy is in deep :crap::bf:
Is it cynical of me to expect all kinds of voting problems yet again? 🙄
Some places have been indicating that they are experiencing problems with early voting on touch screen machines and absentee ballots that are returned for insufficient postage and incorrect signatures.
One of those places is San Diego . John Elliot was talking with people there about that on his show this afternoon
It will be interesting to see how many people show up to vote and find they have been purged from the voter lists.:bf:

Today, at last-minute, a Republican brochure was mailed into my Congressional District sporting a large picture of Osama bin Laden with the Statue of Liberty in the background stating, “He [Osama] thinks one more attack might break our will. He thinks we aren’t tough enough to stick it out.” – So, they know what Osama thinks, they just can think of where he is!
Inside is a silhouette of the epic flag-raising at Mt. Suribachi and “STAND and FIGHT” next to it. Below that the warning: “Liberal Democrats want to cut and run … to withdraw from the battlefield in the war on terror … left-wing Democrats blame America.” The piece ends with the clear implication that if you don’t vote Republican you and your family will die.
The brochure concludes, “If you don’t vote, liberal Democrats will take control of Congress and end programs that stop terrorists.”
The brochure is directed to those whom the Republican leaders hope will follow them over the cliff, those who believe Iraq can still be “won”, those who are ready to attack Iran. The Republican Party brochure panders to deepest fears. Worse, it is lacking in conscience. The people who wrote this know better. And the American people know better. And this Tuesday they will demonstrate it at the polls by sweeping the fear-mongerers out of office.
Sincerely,
Congressman Dennis Kucinich

PS As you may know, I have led the way in challenging the Administration’s policy with Iran, Iraq, the WMD fiasco, National Missile Defense fraud, intelligence fabrications, military tribunals, weaponization of space, and NSA illegal spying, The Republican National Committee and the right wing bloggers have attacked me for it. They are worried that I am in line to chair a top investigative subcommittee on National Security, so they are furiously at work trying to discredit me. I can’t be intimidated. I recorded most if not all of the Ali G shows on HBO today. Now I will have some decent filler for the videos.
I liked the HBO film on hacking the vote machines. Lots on Bev Harris. I am still not clear on why she has fallen from favor. Was it malfeasance on donations? Exaggeration about the problem? One thing is certain: she did do some groundbreaking work on exposing the problem.
that’s the issue then – she’s going to upset some people if she exposes what’s going on…
kucinich
might be also using his cred to raise last minute bucks for the cause.
I spent a couple hours today with a young man from seattle named jesse, a student at george washington u and intern with john lewis of atlanta, ga., on loan to the darcy burner campaign. he said mr. lewis, in an absolutely safe seat, recently hosted a fundraiser at his home (i’m not sure if his wash dc home or district home-home). he had lots of featured guests, bill clinton, eg, and raised a couple hundred thou which he donated to the dccc.
kucinich might be doing that too..
i’ve never seen this much team (not teen) spirit amongst the top dems.
hope springs a turtle!

tons of volunteers at the burner hdqt. more canvassing and a rally tomorrow and, hopefully, passing out literature at the seahawks game monday night or is it sunday? don’t know, not up to me — just a soldier for a few hours a day for the next 3 days.
very wet here, not the usual continual seattle drizzle turning to mist turning to overcast but dry. sheets of heavy rain coming thru mid to late afternoon today. rainy but no squalls til after we finished canvassing our assigned precinct: two spread-out planned developments, not the cookie cutter kind tho. these were pretty tony. one of the two areas was a fucking HUGE gaited community. not lots of dems, of course, but the district is giant and every vote really does count this year.
good times, brothers and sisters. how’s by y’all?
What Ms. Harris has also left herself – and by extension anybody who is advocating investigation, or merely covering the story – open to, is the charge of grandstanding, of tin-foil hatting, of being somebody who bursts in to a room and screams at public officials, videotape running all the time, artificially creating news.
Me – I think that can be justified. Guerrilla politics – even guerrilla news – isn’t pretty, but it’s often necessary, as long as it’s news you’re interested in. It’s necessary, as long as you take advantage of the opportunity to disperse what news you’ve gathered, promptly and professionally, especially if that opportunity can serve the public good, and comes with relatively few strings attached (“can we see it first so we know what the hell we’re broadcasting?” – the same thing we ask anybody with news videotape not shot by an NBC or affiliated camera crew, whether they’ve recorded a hurricane or a cat nursing a puppy).

Speaking of teamwork, Kerry has done a lot. At least I have received some appeals to help democrats. You know, there was a lot of similar activism in 2004.

2004 looked like it was going to be a lot different … 🙁
school bus driver fired for flipping off the prez
(which firing either was or was not at the behest of congressman reichert–he claims it in front of some but not all audiences apparently)
was hired by another school district as a sub driver and has been working “frequently” according to a spokesman of the (less averse to uppity grandmothers) school district that hired her three weeks after her mid-september firing.
darcy burner and pete reichert are pretty much dead even in the polls. hope the above story helps —
featured in today’s king county journal. front page, above the fold — the lead story!

While not having read anything damning, my feeling is that the Bev Harris “controversy” is more over biography and politics than corruption. She was impressive in the HBO movie.
sorry I missed it 🙁
Go see Borat. :omg:
I expect to sometime this week
Speaking of Borat, right now HBO is running the bar in Tucson, AZ episode. “Toss the Jew down…”
:omg:
Is there a chat address for the cnick b’cast or is it just over the internets air?
I was just reading some reviews of Borat – they’re calling it brilliant satire
Kind of scary. Sing-a-long in Tucson.
yes…
Good description.
Yet the filmmakers have loudly and repeatedly insisted that everything outside of Borat and his manager (played by Ken Davitian) is authentic in the picture: the situations, the interviewees, and the reactions of ordinary folks to Borat’s outrageous antics. If that’s the case, then Borat is borderline genius, an inspired piece of guerilla filmmaking that’s able to gauge the real pulse of America and unearth some unpleasant (if hardly surprising) truths. The movie uses fictional bigotry (Borat’s) to reveal the real-life prejudices that blot the U.S. landscape, and, in that regard, it emerges as an unexpected piece of sociopolitical muckraking.
Lyrics – In my country there is problem
Verse
In my country there is problem,
And that problem is transport.
It take very very long,
Because Kazakhstan is big.
Chorus 1
Throw transport down the well (repeat line)
So my country can be free (repeat line)
We must make travel easy (repeat line)
Then we’ll have a big party (repeat line)
Verse 2
In my country there is problem
And that problem is the Jew
They take everybody money
And they never give it back
Chorus 2
Throw the jew down the well (repeat line)
So my country can be free (repeat line)
You must grab him by his horns (repeat line)
Then we have a big party (repeat line)
Verse 3
If you see the Jew coming
You must be carefull of his teeth
You must grab him by his money
And I tell you what to do
(Repeat Chorus 2 twice)

I think Cohen must have come across some antisemitism in his life…he figures a lot of it is hidden but just below the surface, and that disgusts him even more so he gets people to reveal it…
He is good aat revealling people’s homophobia, too. I thik too that perhaps Cohen’s family may have been victims of ill treatment in eastern Europe. I don’t know, though. As for antisemitism in America, I recall Chomsky saying something like “Today, anti-semitism is another ethnic bias, like anti-Italian or Polish.” Personally, I don’t think it is as bad as Cohen’s routines indicate.
wc….:
unfortunately, this is the only chat for cnick’s project, I think.
online listen and call-in by skype is my understanding.
all kinds of things lurk just below the surface in this “polite society” It doesn’t have to be “so bad” (like antisemitism in the old days). It just has to be hidden. I think the genius in this is that it’s fulfilling on some level just to see hypocrites revealed.
Well, one can always flee to Israel.
that would make for an interesting movie too if he were to try that…
Then our Babylonian captors demanded music,
commanded us to act glad, saying:
“Sing us one of your Jew songs!”
With what cheer could we sing the songs of Jah
kidnapped to this new shore?
For Cohen to get real cutting edge, he should expose racism of the anti-Black and anti-Latino sorts.
I have got to go to work. (Painter emo) :40:
