I was reading Atrios and Kos yesterday, and apparently they’re both in a bit of a snit because some folks have questioned Kos’ placement of a Chevron ad on his site. This has come up before – last time it was over having an ad from a fake grassroots organization opposed to Net Neutrality. Personally, I use FireFox with AdBlock, so I don’t even see the ads they run, but it’s always fun to see them get bummed because they don’t like it when people complain to them about it. They certainly have a right to grub money from anybody that will give it to them, and they can post ads for porn, Ovaltine, or even Wendy freakin’ Friesen for all I care. But, geez, do you have to whine about it when people disagree with you?
Here, we subscribe to the BuzzFlash principle, in that there are no ads. Of course, that may have a lot to do with the fact that nobody actually wants to advertise here, but I’d prefer to think that it’s because we’re ideologically pure. I issue a challenge to some wealthy wingnut out there to offer me a few million bucks to post a banner ad. Just watch how fast I turn you down.
One or the other of them – I think it was Atrios – got himself all buggered up over getting too much crap e-mail a while back, too. I guess everybody under the sun adds him to their conspiracy theory e-mail lists and tells him – dammit – he’s not writing about what they want him to write about. While I can sympathize with that, well, sorry, but that’s the price for being a blogstar. Those regular gigs on the Sam Seder show don’t come for free, you know.
Anyhow, have a happy hump day.

Rove to stay until end of Bush presidency
Despite being disappointed with Karl Roveโs election performance, President Bush has agreed to keep his chief political advisor for the remainder of his administration.
Administration sources said Mr. Rove has sought to stay with Mr. Bush until the end of his presidency. The sources said despite pressure on the president to reshuffle his staff for 2007, Mr. Bush wants Mr. Rove by his side.
“He knows too much,” a source said. “The last thing the president wants is another published memoir and book tour of life inside the White House.”

hey everyone…any word from the Japan contingent…there is a tsunami warning and they have told people to move ot higher ground. I dont know what that means as to where KK or any of our long lost seditionists are….probably not effecting them…?…I hope anyway….
I dont know why I see ads…but coming from a family that has heavily relied on advertising for our bread and butter, Im always sort of interested in what it is and how its done…and advertising in general allows these sites to exist….But, also, you are what you are, and of course you’re not taking ads from the KKK in Ebony or whatever….I think its important for sites that have a particular message to represent that even in their advertising space. Its not like mistakes arent made, and its not like those ads dont see the light of day if they arent presented by Kos….
They need to be more careful over there…
Im thinking that it might be fun to go to the yearly kos this year…not so much because I read Kos or even like it all that much. But, because this past year it was full of interesting people and panels…..what do you think PJ?…maybe granny you me and whoever else is interested from bloggerland should do a meetup there….I wonder if its in vegas again…..it could be really fun to get some seditionista force happening and make fun of the pale laptop wearing bloggers lining the halls…..
Ive got some sorta email virus suddenly…its sending out spam mail from my address…..Im running a different virus program than Ive had just to see if I can catch it…..now many mails are coming in with little paper clips next to them, but no attachment….has anyone seen this?

Are you sure these e-mails are coming from you? Or is it just that somebody else with a virus is actually spoofing your address, so it looks like it’s coming form you? You can install a freeware firewall to see if something is trying to send e-mail (or anything else) from your computer while you’re not looking.
I also use a program called LinkLogger, that logs all my router traffic in both directions, and can run reports to see what’s going out (and from what computer), and who’s trying to get in. There’s a free trial of it, but the catch is that for certain routers (mine, for instance), you have to flash the firmware to a third-party version (and if something goes wrong, you can wind up with a brick – not a problem in my experience, but it’s a risk you have to be willing to accept). You also need to forward the router logs to the computer running linklogger, and, obviously, that computer has to be up and running.
A long time ago when I had a PC I had a virus like that. It took names from my address book and sent the virus out to those e mail addresses. I guess that virus is still around unfortunately, or one like it. I wiped it out with some kind of special virus scan.

Japanโs meteorological agency initially predicted that a 6ยฝ-foot tsunami would hit the Pacific coast of Japanโs northernmost island of Hokkaido and main island of Honshu after 9:10 p.m. (7:10 a.m. EST).
A 16-inch wave hit the port of Nemuro on Hokkaido at 9:29 p.m., and live footage from the area showed calm seas.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — The fate of those kidnapped from a Baghdad research institute remained unclear Wednesday.
An Iraqi Interior Ministry official told CNN that most of those kidnapped Tuesday had been freed. But on Wednesday, an emergency police official in the Iraqi capital said no more than 20 people had been released.
It was unclear whether those released represented all of those abducted, as the Interior Ministry did not know how many were kidnapped, the Interior Ministry official said. No one was killed and no one was tortured, he said.
Al-Iraqiya state television was also reporting most of the hostages had been released.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki Wednesday deplored the mass kidnapping and vowed to free those taken and bring the criminals to justice.
In an appearance at Baghdad University, al-Maliki promised better security and no disruptions to education.
He said the government “will do all it takes to keep education going and we hope to see you graduate and join the process of building the country.”

What’s wrong with the military or the CIA? Money’s money, right? That’s what it’s all about. As long as you do good with the money, of course.
A video from 1981.
Pardon Hinckley! :omg:
Because they hoodwink people to join them. Then they go kill and get killed. Fuck the Army!
I forget – why should Hinckley be pardoned again?
fred, thanks for the Aljazeera link.
Put disclaimers by the CIA ads. Back in my college days, the editor of the student underground paper took $50 from the CIA to plaace an ad. We all got pissed at him, but he had already spent the money on coke. The ad had to go in. So some of us put other, fake ads by the CIA ad. Lessened the impact. I’ll see if I can dig up a copy of that paper.
But, golly, if you castigate the military and the CIA in your content, surely it’s OK to take their money, isn’t it? Is what Wal-Mart, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, GE – a host of others – so much less dangerous?
It is a joke. Propaganda poster. Someone put a picture of Bush and underneath the image put “Pardon Hinckley”.
Hinckley shot Reagan in 1981. Apparently, Murtha’s swiftboat video is from 1981.
The Aljazeerah TV stream works .. It looks to be live but it also looks like you will eventually have to subscribe..( that’s bad if they want to get their view out)..Making a credit card charge to some business in the middle east night get you disappeared these days.:eek:
Soldiers are getting shot at. Soldiers are shooting. No. Create more options for young people besides the military.
As long as you remain ideologically pure, isn’t it all OK?
Kos writes:
So, that seems like rather perfect rationalization for pretty much any ad. And, of course, Kos goes on to say that he doesn’t think his readers are stupid, so they can ignore his ads.
The system is so corrupted that we need not discern anything. Take money from everyone. That is our freedom.
that’s too bad about subscription… it will be easier to get a record of people who subscribe to that…
I mean, by extension, what harm is it to take campaign contributions from lobbyists or special interests, right? It’s all good.

Oh, I thought you meant Roy Hinckley.
that whole advertising thing has been plaguing Kos since the site started taking ads. Seems anyone can find a reason to disagree with any ad, find something corrupt or bad or politically out of step with almost anything he puts up there…
I was thinking about college days, when we trashed the student paper for taking military ads. We did not want to legitimize the military choice And CIA. KOS is not the same. No one there will be swayed by a military, I am sure.
I admit that the pardon Hinckley gag is played out–and kind of tasteless. Anyway, that dude got a not guilty by reason of insanity sentence. He can now visit home.
I don’t care if KOS takes ads. I have never criticized that. Take the bastards’ money. I ‘ll have to go check the place out.
It’s not about what Kos’ readers think about the ads he accepts. Well, it wouldn’t be for me, anyway. It would be about what ads I personally could stomach being associated with. I certainly don’t fault other people for being able to rationalize away their integrity.
it’s true that the ads he accepts say something about him and what he supports – there’s no getting around that – he supports completely free capitalism, whatever sells sells.. This is in line with the Democratic party.
On the monday before the election and on election day Google Adds which DU puts up were putting up nasty advertising about democrats.. The DU admin took them down … until Wednesday .. ๐ฎ

HI KING KONG!!! :yippee:
this is horrible. makes my husband a walking f*cking cash register.
The Net Neutrality one is an ad that I thought was quite unacceptable, because it made it seem as though there was some grassroots organization working to “save” the Internet from these nasty old regulators. In fact, it was from a coalition of telco lobbyists. It was deceitful, and it also was advocating something that, in the end, could make it impossible for bloggers w/o a huge bankroll or backing from service providers (those blog and websites whose content is acceptable to the telecom industry) to get their message out.
Farmerkat! Thanks for thinking of me. How’s the family? โ
Anyhow, I was more amused that Kos felt the need to whine about people complaining. People bitch about anything. That’s all part of the deal, too.
Yeah, I saw that FK. I remember Mick Ware saying that kidnapping had become an industry over there. They snag somebody, and shop them around. Very scary, and Mister should stay over here (where things are scary enough as it is).
I would say that adds from organizations/companies that are not pushing something that’s a lie or harmful are ok as long as the income gained from them doesn’t effect the sites editorial policy or tilts/excludes information they present. When it comes to internet related sites if some site administrator does not allow someone to post something or edits the content that information will get spread around and the sites users can take offense if they like.
think of the ads for Air America – lots of really cheesy ones like “improve your vision without glasses” and so on…some of them really offensive…I guess I’m just used to unfettered capitalism, put up whatever ads you want.
This Aljazirah channel is pretty good ..Kind of like multiple Amy Goodmans bringing one news from the middle east. ๐ฎ
Talk radio advertising is directed toward the num nerds on the Reich.. They wouldn’t know what was true and what was false or what was grey.. I don’t think the advertising companies that pay them to run blocks of adds have come up with blocks of liberal advertisers Some of the local affiliated stations have though..

I was in Saudi Arabia about 10 years ago when Al-Jazeera was a new thing. People were really excited and positive about it; for the first time, the middle east had an independent news source. It seemed like
democracy was dawning in that part of the world.
I wouldn’t expect the US to always like or agree with what Al-Jazeera’s editorial positions. But it represents the chance for people to hear something other than the state-sponsored point of view, to make up their own minds and get engaged in the issues affecting them. The middle east, at least the Arab countries, have been a news desert for years. If the US really wants democracy in the middle east we should be supporting more Al-Jazeera-type experiments not trying to undermine this one.
Thanks for the link, Fred.

Congressman John Murtha reportedly called a Democratic bill on lobbying and ethics reform “total crap” two days before the House Majority Leader election, during a vote-bidding presentation before the Blue Dog Coalition.
“Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) told a group of Democratic moderates on Tuesday that an ethics and lobbying reform bill being pushed by party leaders was ‘total crap,’ but said that he would work to enact the legislation because Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) supports it,” John Bresnahan reports for Roll Call.
“Even though I think itโs total crap, Iโll vote for it and pass it because thatโs what Nancy wants,” Murtha said, three sources at the meeting told the Capitol Hill newspaper.

TOKYO (AP) – Sony’s new PlayStation 3 can’t play some of the games designed for previous generations of the popular console, the latest misstep for the stumbling electronics company as it faces off in a crucial, three-way war with Nintendo and Microsoft.
Sony Corp. (SNE), which has fallen behind in key products like flat-panel TVs and digital music players, badly needs a best-seller in the PS3. The console went on sale here to hoards of eager fans over the weekend, ahead of its U.S. release on Friday.
On Tuesday, the company acknowledged the console won’t run some of the 8,000 titles designed for previous PlayStations – even though the PlayStation 3 was billed as being fully compatible with older-generation games.

Now that they have taken back the congress it will interesting to see how many democrats vote against things that might be good for the people as a whole and vote with the thugs on things for those with money. I don’t see these democrats being much different that the demodorops of 1992 . I hope they are or they may be short lived ( so to speak) :bf:
Sean is on sedition radio right now!
Well, the left and the Democrats are too different things. I will agree, though, that the only thing that those on the left hate more than those on the right is each other.
uh oh what did i say?
In our corrupted system there are only two “real” parties so if you are not united by the love of money, the hatred of minorities or corrupted religious issues the democrats are the party that represents you whether you like it or not.. :bf:
is there a link to sedition radio?
I don’t think those on the left hate each other as much as they have focused on certain issues and if the politician does not look to be on your side in terms of your issue(s) you don’t vote or vote for a minority party candidate which takes the vote from the only candidate that matters, In the game of compromise that once was DC politics senators and reps voted with some one on an issue to just line that person up to vote with him on some other issue. So to the person examining their voting record it appears they don’t stand for any issue.
Oh, no. If you don’t agree that somebody’s pet cause is the most important cause there is, then you’re just a tool of the imperialist, fascist, capitalist pigs, and are no better than they are.
Yep, on the right, under multimedia.
Sedition Radio is linked over on the right side of the blog under Multimedia under S

If you look at the history of the left in the US, you will find examples of united front organizing work. I don’t see all this left hatred of left. There have been problems, to be sure. A major one was the insistence of some to insist that the authoritarian leninist model was the only way. Even so, groups of thaat ideology did do good work. It is said that the CIO would not have been formed had it not been for the Communist Party of America’s rank and file. They were not thaat concerned with the correct party line, as interpreted by the leaders. There are more examples. There have even been groups critical of the leninist hegemony. Examples…IWW…more…
Greetings all!! :jesus:
I think that those on the left openly dispute more than conservatives do among themselves, for instance. That’s the nature of our lot, though, we’re more individualistic than right-wingers who have more of a conformist mentaltity, with the good and (mostly) bad that that implies
Any writer that uses traitor and Bush in the same sentence can’t be all that bad.
There have been ugly sectarian struggles among the left. Anyway, when I say left here, I mean socialist left. Starting a little to the left of FDR. Anyway, even among the “leninist” styled groups, much good work gets done. They do work with other groups. I know. I was with โ he fucking SWP for a short while in the late 1980s. They stressed coalitions. They were not wildeyed crazies. They even ran candidates in elections. They had been long-time trotskyists; realized that trotskyism was no longer valid, and went for the model of Castro’s Cuba–probably in a more theoretically idealized sense. Interesting group, but I am more of an anarcho-syndicalist than a marxist-leninist. Power to the masses!
:fist:
Damn near finished with that painting.
:pent:yay! I got a bunch of drawings in the mail today
And the blog died….
Jon Stewart “if you had been elected vice president in 2004 who would you have shot in the face”

I would be able to vote for John Edwards w/o holding my nose.

Even if he does see dead people.
Oh, I dunno. I’m usually up pretty early. My wife takes my stepson to bowling on Saturday mornings, so I’m up fairly early. Got a Friendlys right by my house that’s a pretty easy off Rt’s 690/481.
pretty easy for a truck?
There’s a Home Depot right nearby. You could pull in there, and I could hook up with you.
It’s basically right off the Thruway.
I like this Jeff Schwartz guy (from last night’s Colbert).

He’s probably not sufficiently anti-Israel, though.
