It is Friday, right? Yesterday felt like Sunday, but today doesn’t feel like Monday (good thing, too). I hope y’all had a good Thanksgiving, and there wasn’t too much family-related trauma (especially those of you have a loose wingnut or two in the family). If you plan on joining in on the post-Thanksgiving shopping orgy today, better take a minute to sharpen your elbows. Personally, I recommend a nice day around the house spent napping and eating leftovers.

France Authorizes Troops To Fire At Israeli Jets Over South Lebanon
French soldiers serving with the United Nations force in south Lebanon, who feel I wondered when threatened by Israel Air Force (IAF) overflights, are permitted to shoot at Israeli aircraft, the Jerusalem Post daily reported Thursday, quoting “a high-ranking French military officer.”
The French decision was conveyed several days after an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) general met French officials in Paris to explain why the IAF conducted the overflights in south Lebanon, in violation of a UN-brokered ceasefire which ended the fighting in the summer between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.
The overflights over French positions have raised French hackles. On October 31, an IAF mock bombing run almost prompted the troops to launch anti-aircraft missiles.
Major-General Ido Nehushtan told his French counterparts in Paris that Israel was conducting the flights to collect intelligence on Hezbollah, which Israel has accused of also violating the UN ceasefire.

The Democrats’ takeover of Congress this month has turned official Washington upside down.
Labor and environmental representatives, once also-rans in congressional influence, are meeting frequently with incoming Democratic leaders. Corporations that once boasted about their Republican ties are busily hiring Democratic lobbyists. And industries worried about reprisals from the new Democrats-in-charge, especially the pharmaceutical industry, are sending out woe-is-me memos and hoping their GOP connections will protect them in the crunch.
“Change is in the air,” said Melinda Pierce, a senior lobbyist for the Sierra Club. She had never even been invited to meet with Republican House leaders, but since Election Day incoming Democrats have welcomed her advice.
Dan Danner sees change in the opposite direction. The top lobbyist for the National Federation of Independent Business has attended meetings with Republican leaders at least twice a month for the past 12 years. But he has yet to see any of the new Democratic crowd and doesn’t expect to anytime soon. “That’s a significant difference,” he said.

Drug Industry Is on Defensive as Power Shifts
Alarmed at the prospect of Democratic control of Congress, top executives from two dozen drug companies met here last week to assess what appears to them to be a harsh new political climate, and to draft a battle plan.
Hoping to prevent Congress from letting the government negotiate lower drug prices for millions of older Americans on Medicare, the pharmaceutical companies have been recruiting Democratic lobbyists, lining up allies in the Bush administration and Congress, and renewing ties with organizations of patients who depend on brand-name drugs.
Many drug company lobbyists concede that the House is likely to pass a bill intended to drive down drug prices, but they are determined to block such legislation in the Senate. If that strategy fails, they are counting on President Bush to veto any bill that passes. With 49 Republicans in the Senate next year, the industry is confident that it can round up the 34 votes normally needed to uphold a veto.
While that showdown is a long way off, the drug companies are not wasting time. They began developing strategy last week at a meeting of the board of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

Microsoft has promised to refund gamers who have experienced problems with its new Xbox Live video service.
US Xbox 360 owners are able to download high definition TV programmes and films, including shows such as Star Trek and CSI.
But Xbox’s Larry Hryb has said “technical issues have resulted in a very unpleasant experience” for users.

How goes the morning after :?::?:
Morning /Evening :yinyang:
Just a quick HI before I go out on ‘Black Friday’ (shopping).
Hey KK…how was the duck?….
Well, I didnt eat much but I am going to brine my lil’ non-Islamic turkey…and am making som applesauce to try to deal with the end of the year at the farm orchard.
Im watching some olbermanns that I saved this week and he is showing Richard’s whole apology….man, he is sorta unbalanced.
hey kk,
bet shoppings wild where you are.
fred: did you cook for the social services meal?
The duck was HUGE. the six os us celebrating couldnot finish all the dishes.
How was your T-Day?
roxie- my favorite T-shirt at the SherLin Night Market (night markets are great) was IN Engligh, but NOT English: “Front Raps Cod Freeze In Safe Smash Drugs Basin”
The turkeys came precooked by a task force of mostly individuals..We made about 200 gallons ( 20 10 gallon cook pots) of instant mashed potatoes and another 200 of dressing Tens upon tens of 5 gallon cans of green beans, cranberry sauce, and gravey.. We don’t have an electric can opener.. my thumb is sore …
Off to “The Blue Note” C U :yippee:
kk
excellent!
have you understanding what fish plans to sing about to world?
and on what drugs am they?
fred: next year you’ll bring an electric one i bet…i’m sure the folks eating were happy you made the effort. i haven’t done that for years — maybe christmas day.
anybody know if sam’s new or a repeat? are we going to miss a week of marc? damn holiday!
PJ!! Check today’s Woot….would that also work for podcasts? Can you record TV witht hat? I want the newer big Archos, but I also need a good MP3 recorder….its go a tiny screen but it seems to do alot!!…for the price anyway…..
I don’t know if a typical electric can opener would open a 5 gallon can . We used to have a commercial one that clipped to the rim on the top of the can and then ran around the top to open it but it expired and with rethugs in power ..:yuck::crap::rant1:
this is what it says on amazon:Record from any standard audio source with high-quality stereo sound via the stereo analog line-in connection or record voice or live music with the built-in microphone. Files will be saved on the Gmini 402 in WAV format.
Is that good quality for podcasting?
.wav is uncompressed, so you’d want to convert it to mp3 or whatever. Doesn’t have video in, so you could use it as a camcorder, but not to use as a DVR.
Wav files are raw CD quality 40khz recordings.. One hour of real time makes about a 900 megabyte file. The biggest ( time consuming) problem is getting the file off the device to your computer so you can make an MP3 file from it.:fustrate:zzzzzz
You should use a broadaxe to open cans, the way the pilgrims did it. You could take turns volunteering to hold the cans.
I think that the 80 gig one that is just twice the price is better…the price keeps dropping and it is set up as a dvr so you can catch some shows on it…and this gimini apparently has a funky audio input situation wher eyou definitley need an external mic that connnects with a Y connection that covers the earphone port…?…and is not very friendly.
It would make a nice gift for a child though…huh?…better maybe than just an MP3 player….
Well, it’s got USB connectivity, so that’s easy enough. It says it ca do PCM or ADPCM (which is a lower bitrate, beacuse of the way it does sampling), but is still uncompressed. Dunno what options this particular device has, but you can select different sampling rates, different bit depths, and of course number of channels (mono, stereo, etc).
Getting your blood in their food is verboten… Some one suggested using a chainsaw but…
I got that as seen on TV can opener that drives around the top of the can….its pretty good.
$160 seems to be a pretty good price, if you’re in the market for something like that. At the very least, it’s a 20 gig external hard drive that plays mp3’s and takes pictures and video. Would be OK for sending the birthday movies to grandma, or perhaps for the budding Paris Hilton/Brittany Spears consorts out there.
Good morning. :joe:

pj:
how would the quality as a videocam compare to non digital vhs-c type one?
PJ! I have a question for you, this laptop someone gave me has some software on it that I want off but I don’t want to get rid of it completely. Can I put it onto a disc and download it art another time?
Fred! Woo HOO! :pup:
Hey Roxie. Well, it says it will do “up to” VGA resolution, which would be 640 x 480, I guess. Regular TV is around 500 lines, so it should be OK. It also compresses it to MP4, which is probably OK for display on a regular TV (at least, if it isn’t a really big screen, and depending on the amount of motion). As for comparison to an analog camcorder, well, it really depends on the quality of the camcorder (and of course your recording settings). You’ll never really do any better than NTSC with a VHS camcorder, which is fine on a non-HD TV. So, um, to not really be at all helpful, I guess I’d have to look at user reviews to really get a sense for how good the video is.
On a Windoz computer programs are “installed” so that they put entries into the registry and create files and directories all over the place. You can usually uninstall them through the control panel but you would need to have the original program disks to reinstall them . On a MAC you can often just find the folder that contains the executable files and move it off the computer then delete the links to the desktop. To do a reinstall you just move the folder back and then manually make the links from the desktop to the executables.
Hey KP. If it’s a windows program, you’d most likely need to uninstall it, and be able to reinstall it from the original installation source. Mac software is generally independent (it just puts everything it needs into the installation directory, which you can move around anywhere. Some Windows software is like that, and JAVA software is, too. But, if it’s Windows, odds are, no.
Is it an issue of disk space? I mean, unless you’re out of space, why remove the program if you’re ever gonna want it again?
thanks pj, i’ll look at the reviews.
Thanks Fred. I thought I saw AutoCAD on this thing but now I can’t find it. Must have been hallucinating.
This laptop has 5.59 GB of space total and 1.90 GB of free space. I found the entry for AutoCAD in the list of programs in C drive but theres no listing under program files. So, maybe it’s been uninstalled already. I was just getting worried about downloading too much stuff but it looks like there’s not a whole lot on here. My other laptop has a D drive, which was nice.
The newer video cams make mpeg/avi files which are digital recordings..VHS is an analog recording technique.where you write the composite video analog signals to the tape.
Mpeg files allow you to manipulate the video with your computer and you can make copies without degrading anything. Every time you copy a VHS tape the video quality gets worse and worse. Some digital recoding devices can make HDTV quality recordings too.You can still play them back through your video card to a normal TV.
5.5geg is not much in todays world of digital everything. If it has Windoz XP on it you might do a disk clean up which deletes temporary internet files and other temporary files that might be lingering around.
Well, it is an excellent price for an external hard drive, but you can actually probably get alot more HD space in a non player sort of setup…also it has no speaker (not that speakers do much on these little players) But its a good toy for a kid….thats the way I see it.
I would get it for Ben’s neice who is also 12 and lives with him but Ben’s mom just canceled the cable modem, so she isnt gonna be able to download songs or anything…..She could do movies or pics and copy them to the computer…..but maybe its best toget her a digital camera in that case.
Good groggy morning everyone! :joe::joe:
ust be careful of the picture and video downloads krista…i find that the digital files really back up quickly when theyre coming in…and that there is a copy in itunes and in my replay folder and who knows where else. I have to actively delete stuff. This is where spending a bit on an external hard dive comes in handy because you can store stuff easily there….I have one…but its also all confused as to what is where….just hoping not to lose all my pics or anything. Im under the impression that you cant save whole programs onto a disc…..it would be cool to learn autocad…
andy!!!hows things?
Hey Melina, tired and I didn’t do any cooking, I went to my brothers’ house for T-day.
Yeah, that’s what I was noticing on the other computers is that I had the same files in Replay and Itunes etc. I had Replay set up so that it would keep a week of shows and new files would just replace the old files. But Itunes keeps everything. I haven’t downloaded Itunes yet or Replay. I couldn’t get AutoCAD on this thing to open so it must not be there. I have AutoCAD 2000 on disc but i guess it won’t fit on this computer. I think i will get an external hard drive to store everything on.
Krista, what about upgrading the internal HD?
How would I do that on a laptop? Hopefully this lil laptop is just to tie me over til I get a new computer, but I have no idea when that will be. I have to fix the front end of my friends car first.
Good morning everyone.
Farmerkat, please pass this on to Mr. FK
:gate:
at costco theyve got 500 gigs of storage for $189…but Im looking at the 80 gig archos player….
I should be heading down tot he sharper image black friday blowout sale but the guy assured me that the archos would not be going on sale, as wouldnt the love handler exercise machine…..so, what else is there?:rofl2:
Hey Tom…you just reminded me that Mr is heading out today…Kat, we’re thinking of you guys…
You’d have to have a shop do it, I don’t think it would be more than $175.00, but if it’s only temporary it’s probably not worth it.
That’s what happens when I don’t read all the posts! :spank:
Hey Kat, ask him if there is any sort of carepackage we can send out to the soldiers and/or the press corps…is there anyting they want for the christmas season? I know hes not in Iraq till after x-mas but Im sure that even in ….is it Beirut….there are still many people far from home.
Krista…I replaced the HD on my old dell laptop by just buying one real cheap on ebay :santacool: and then opening it up (and the computer parts liquidators tell you how to open the right place..) and then jist popping it in, pluggin it in, tightening the screws and reloading windows XP…you can upgrade the internal pretty easily if you have the XP discs.
I also replaced the keyboard on that one a couple of itmes. I had watched a tech do it before and it seemed pretty easy so when the next one died I ordered one from ebay :santacool: and just did it…no problem….you need a little tool kit with lots of little phillips head screwdrivers….
What can I use to soak the turkey in?…can I buy a bucket at the market (I wouldnt want to use an old one…or even the fish tank cleaning one;-)…or just in the roasting pan and turn the thing alot.
Will you marry me Melina? Maybe I’ll do that because it’s gonna be a long time before I get up to the new computer on the list of things i need to take care. The Universe has piled a whole bunch of crap on me recently. :crap:
I used a plastic cooler Melina. Tjhe ones with the spout on the bottom are best for draining.
PJ/Fred…what do you think of this thing to use to record podcasts and to use as a DVR to save a bunch of shows from TV and stuff….I never know what to look for, but its a beautiful thing in person…
This is one of those things I dont need, really, but I need a good MP3 recorder (I have a good mic) and Id like something like this for travel…They have a 30 gig one that has wifi too….
Replacing the HDD is pretty easy, KP. One thing you could do is get a bigger hard drive for the thing, and then if you get a more better computer, you can buy a 2.5″ USB/FireWire external drive enclosure (they’re pretty cheap), and you’ll have a nifty little portable USB drive that you can use with any computer.
If you want to really play, find a disassembly manual for your laptop. I know Dell has them online. I had mine completely disassembled into pieces – motherboard, radio, dsplay removed, you name it. It even worked again when I put it back together, and I only have one screw left over (of course, I lost a couple, too). That’s the first time I’ve had it that far apart. Desktops are a lot easier.
Looks like a nice toy, Melina. They make a 160-gig version, too. I’d probably want to see what different settings it has for recording and how the MPEG4 compression looks. It’s probably pretty good.
Yeah, but laptops are much funner….I love to take them apart!
I have the original b&w toshiba laptop that my dad gave me 15 years ago…it was my first computer…anyway, it still works and has windows 3.1 whatever that was!….It got flooded on and all…but I kept it so i can take it apart and play with the parts! Im hoping ot get time for that.
Krista…the other thign is that Ive seen a ton of emachines on sale lately that are less than $400….and they have alot of power and a big screen. Today at one of the computer stores they had a huge emachine for $189…but only 15 of them so you would have had to get in line at 4AM….
The dells are great because the celerons are really cheap and the payment plan with no interest is pretty good….I paid off my laptop with no interest…and that was a pretty big purchase for me.
Now I see that my sister has gotten 2 new dells with HUGE screens…and they are nice….Im so itchy to get a new desktop because I cant reach the tech support for this half dead one!….They keep putting me on hold for long long times…and Im so pissed….
Oh god…where is Nick…this archos has a head mounted video camera add on….I could just imagine our intrepid reporter with his in ear mics and this head mounted camera going out into the field letting us know what America thinks!!!
I cant for the life of me figure out if it records audio, though they do offer a mic for it….it seems like if you want to copy your analog music into it you have to do it through the dock…..But it seems like you should be able to just record on this thing. I really like the 160 gig….
Ive read the whole site and I know how to upgrade the firmware but it doesnt say one word about freakin recording MP3s …like podcasts, bands, panels at Kos…..and the wifi one doesnt mention being able to go on the internets…..much less collect your email!
The screen is really beautiful in person.
KP before you invest in an external hard drive be sure the older computer supports the interface to it. A lot of the older computers don’t have USB for example..Most of the older laptops do have two PCMCIA card slots so you can get a USB adapter but that is just more money you have to spend.
This laptop has 1 USB port. She gave me a unit that adds 4 extra USB ports but I can’t seem to get it to work. There was no chord to it and I have a chord that seems to fit it but it’s not working. The laptop does not sense the new hardware so I think I need to go and get the right chord for sure.
For the Archos 504 audio recording, it says:” stereo line-in, WAV (IMA ADPCM or PCM) format.” So, apparently no native mp3 recording.
KP, as long as you’re not going to store a bunch of video, I wouldn’t worry too much about hard drive space. 24 kbps mp3 is roughly 10 megs per hour. So, 100 hours is roughly a gig.
What kind of laptop is it? You can get an 80 gig drive for most notebooks for around $60, and bump it up to 100 gigs for around $80. For those prices, you’re usually looking at OEM drives, meaning you won’t get any utilities to format the drive and whatnot. You can generally download that for free, though, and Windows installation will do it for you, too.
If you use it as a replacement drive, you’ll need to be able to install whatever software you have (like Windows, for instance). Since I’m sure it’s all legit software, I’m sure the installation media is handy. 😉
A hard drive enclosure is in the $20 – $40 range, give or take.
So, if it was me, and I’d see how quick I run out of space. Hardware prices only seem to get cheaper, so it’s not like if you don’t run out and spend money, you’re gonna lose out.
damn….well…Ill have to keep looking or I can download and change em into mp3…thats not the worst thing.
Krista…wh I switched the hard drive of the old laptop I had to go on dell and download drivers for things like the usb etc…I oculdnt find the right disc for the drivers and utilites so i went online and downloaded all sorts of crap. I still have an exclamation point on the usb section but I finally got them to work…I dont know how….just downloading crap. Check on the manufacturer downloads page and see if they have utilities and updates for the computer you have. It might fix the usb situation.
does it matter if it records in wav only? what would I be missing?…I have to edit it anyway
Odds are you’re gonna edit anything you record, anyway. At any rate, you’ll be transferring it to your PC. I see that Newegg has it for the same “special price too low to show” as Amazon, but Newegg has free three-day shipping (whereas Amazon’s “super saver” free shipping seems to send it via mule).
Wav is uncompressed. It’s actually “better” that way (in theory, anyway), since you don’t lose any information until you convert it. All you’ll be missing is drive space, since it takes up a lot more room, though it says it does ADPCM, which is somewhat compressed, so that’ll save some space). Of course, you can get a cheapo one just for recording for under $100 that will do mp3. Ones and zeros are ones and zeros, after all.
but with 80-160 gigs, how oculd I record so much that I wont get back to some computer at some point to transfer and at worst case scenario burn it onto discs….?
I just told mom to give me amazon gift certificates for x-mas….and Im gonna tell everyone that because they seem to have the best prices on these things…
see, the main thing is that Im gonna start recording some Himan pod casts or sound bytes or whatever.
He is very open to your idea of streaming lo-fi and then offering CDs…or even just streaming. But I thought that If I could do one or two questions per week of interviews with him and put in a podcast off the page as well….it would certainly draw traffic.
We are just fighting about getting a CD machine. He thinks that the Disc maker machines are good but that you have to make 500 to 1000 discs at a pop. I think that you can start small and burn a few at a time, assemble them yourself (I have a graphics friend who knows about the CD layout thing)…and he doesnt even want to do jewel cases so it would be easy to print up hard cardboard cases or somehting. I find that jewel cases crack…..the last time I checked, there were only a few hundred people willing to buy the stuff so I would view it as a jumping off point to other things like podcasts and material…..and a good virtual archive of Hi’s work and his scripts and stuff. The schools who want his archives always end up disappointing him……I dont think they know what to do with it.
So, back around to the archos…I NEED it…right?
Melina,
Make sure to let us know how that Islamic turkey makes out with the kosher salt. Hope all halal doesn’t break loose.
well, I had to go round and find the kosher one…I kept imagining an osama sorta guy with a scimitar in the “butchering according to Islamic law” part…and it was just too much. Also it had a bright yellow wrapper covered with islamic writing…..so….
That’s kinda what I meant. Except if all you want is to record audio, a cheapo one would be fine. Even at 192 kbps (which is pretty major overkill, especially for voice), mp3 is about 1.5 MB per minute, so a one gig one would hold, what, something close to 11 hours.
If I wasn’t so enlightened, I’d say that they get the turkeys to fly themselves into buildings. But of course I would never say that.

Hey everybody, thanks for all the wine suggestions. I ended up being a flip-flopper and picking up a Chardonnay and then later a pinot grigio. But that just means I have an extra bottle to class up today’s leftovers.

Krista, if I can find that Obsession wine you suggested, I’ll give it a try. I’m a little concerned, though… a single woman of your beauty and intelligence drinking something called Obsession? Very Sharon Stone. 🙂
I was going to make a joke about rabbit stew, but instead I’ll post something that Krista will like a lot more.
:pup::pup::pup:
But I guess thay my point was that I NEED the DVR and the 100 gigs…right?
and anyway, Im gona get something like $200 back on the iriver fiasco….they sent me an old screwed up one…it was a mistake because it was supposed to be refurbished and like new…then they said to send it back and they would send me another…then they wrote and said whoops we’re out of em, we’ll credit you…then they sent me the whole thing back with no explanation or packing slips…then when I wrote them they asked for my tracking number!!!….and when I asked WHY they would need that considering that I had my thing back here with all of its accesories….they sent me another shipping label….
and theyre out of those…but I dont want to deal with them anymore. So, I want something FUN that also has the capacity to record MP3’s, wav’s or whatever…as long as its good quality…..I need a DVR and it could come in handy….

Looks like if you want to use that Archos as a DVR, you have to use the “optonal” DVR station, which is another $100. On the bright side, that give you SPDIF out for audio (as well as analog), as well as S-VHS, Composite video in/out (so you could digitize your existing recordings), and RGB out, plus an AC adapter/charger to charge the thing (have to charge via the USB cable otherwise, and no included AC Adapter if you don’t get either the DVR station or the docking station), and of course the all-important remote.
Hey all,
’bout to go out for the evening but I thought I’d offer up this link for anyone interested in podcasting on the cheap. Go here. Talk with you guys later.
Yeah, looks like that one needs an “optional” Cradle System, for that one, too, if you want to use it as a DVR. Nice that it has a card reader in it, though. Same price as the Archos. I see that the Archos requires some extra video codec purchases at $15 a pop to play other video formats.
Going out on a Friday night? You know, I seem to recall doing such a thing in a past life.
When you buy some of this stuff from”never heard of Inc” you should plan on using it for only a short time since the manufacturer may go away, the technology may(will) change or it may break and will either not be repairable or it will cost more to get it fixed and/or to get your stuff off of it than it cost to start with 😮
This older one comes with the cradle etc….but its harder to find and Im not sure that its got the proper audio in capabilities….
still, it seems to do everything the newer ones do. They pulled this one from sharper image and I was wondering why…well, because they want to sell the cradle, charger and audio input separately…theyalso developed their own USB input so you need their dongle….theres that word again….
Ding dongle!!
Yeah, the furthest Im getting tonight is down to pick up Willfrom the diner.
But then my sister is all into going out every night and wants me to go club hopping with her…and I just really dont want to.
At least if cnick comes to visit I have someone to take him down to the city and check out the clubs with….Im just no good at any of that anymore.
This
But Dad, I like Never Heard Of it Inc…and if they go out of business Ill open another credit card to buy the newest thing from Never Ever Heard Of it inc!!…how else can I watch survivor and Olberman in the car while I drive and put on my makeup and talk on the cell phone all at the same time?????
With all the storage in those things they could easily turn into what would be like a high tech low cost flood filling the down stairs closet where all your slides and pictures are stored with three feet of mud..:crap::eek::paranoid:

I didn’t have any turkey on thanksgiving! Strange. It feels like I missed something. And it’s not even snowing here!

Peeps…Im gonna go and laydown….just tired and not getting much done except listening to my excellent pandora radio station and shopping for video recorders.
Another parallel to Vietnam
I just sent the link to the story above to my friend in Chicago and she said one of her co-workers knew Malachi.
I feel like it could snow here…:hot:

Well, I put a post on my blog about Malachi Ritscher. He was an underground kinda guy, so that’s how his story will spread. :gate:
Newsday

Buying a live turkey is a Thanksgiving rite for many in New York
“They operate under strict Muslim “halal” laws of animal slaughter _ similar to “kosher” _ which requires that the animal’s main artery be cleanly severed, with minimal suffering and all blood drained. “It’s a sacrifice to Allah,” said owner and ethnic Yemeni Kaleb Omar, 25, running around in a long white apron. “We say slaughter, not kill _ murderers kill.” ”
And more f4rom another source…
“From what I understand, “halal” meat is nothing more than having a Muslim slaughter the animal “in the name of God.” I’ve also heard it requires bleeding the animal dry while it is facing Mecca. Sometimes, however, all that is necessary is somebody saying “In the name of God the Beneficent the Merciful” over the food before consumption. Either way, I’m glad to see more people enjoying Thanksgiving.”
Last!?
