Gates Advocated Air Strikes on Nicaragua
By GEORGE GEDDA
The Associated Press
Friday, November 24, 2006; 4:54 PM
WASHINGTON — In 1984, Robert Gates, then the No. 2 CIA official, advocated U.S. airstrikes against Nicaragua’s pro-Cuban government to reverse what he described as an ineffective U.S. strategy to deal with communist advances in Central America, previously classified documents say.
Gates, President Bush’s nominee to be defense secretary, said the United States could no longer justify what he described as “halfhearted” attempts to contain Nicaragua’s Sandinista government, according to documents released Friday by the National Security Archive, a private research group.

Telescope starts looking at cosmic frontier
Mexican leaders celebrate inauguration of Large Millimeter Telescope
MEXICO CITY – Scientists turned on a massive telescope built on one of Mexico’s tallest mountains Wednesday, hoping to get a glimpse of the beginning of the universe.
With a base like a launching pad and an antenna the size of a big Ferris wheel, the Large Millimeter Telescope, or LMT, will be used to pick up electromagnetic radiation known as millimeter waves emitted 13 billion years ago, when the first stars burst into existence, astrophysicists say.
“This telescope … will allow us to make fundamental discoveries about the formation and evolution of galaxies, about the formation and evolution of stars, and about the origin of the universe itself,” Jose Guichard, director of the National Astrophysics Institute, said during the inauguration.

Football fan shot dead after racist mob attack
A French football fan was shot dead by a police officer after a mob of young white men, screaming anti-Semitic and racist insults, attacked a Hapoel Tel Aviv supporter outside the Parc des Princes in Paris late on Thursday night.
The plain clothes police officer, aged 32, was under arrest yesterday after shooting dead a 25-year-old man after a Uefa Cup game between Paris Saint Germain and Hapoel Tel Aviv.
Police and eye-witnesses said a mob of up to 300 white men chased a French Tel Aviv supporter after the game shouting “dirty Jew” and “fat Jew”, making Nazi salutes and screaming “Le Pen president”.

Nov 24, 12:51 PM (ET)
By DAVID WEBER
BOSTON (AP) – Gov. Mitt Romney asked Massachusetts’ highest court Friday to force a proposed anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment onto the state’s 2008 ballot if the Legislature fails to vote on it.
The Republican governor, a fierce opponent of gay marriage and a possible presidential contender, filed the request with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court after lawmakers put off acting on the question until January. The high court ruled 4-3 in 2003 that the state could no longer deny marriage licenses to gay couples.
Romney has said the state Constitution requires legislators to vote on whether the measure should go on the ballot. If they don’t vote when they return Jan. 2, the last day of the legislative session, the court can order the secretary of state to put it on the 2008 ballot, Romney argues.
The postponement of legislative action was widely seen by supporters and opponents of gay marriage as a way to kill the measure.
Backers of the question, which would define marriage in Massachusetts as the union of a man and a woman, gathered more than 170,000 signatures of people.
Opponents of the question, including powerful House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, feared they didn’t have the 151 votes needed to kill the measure and instead called for a vote to recess the joint House-Senate session until Jan. 2. Lawmakers approved the recess vote by 109-87.
Since gay marriage became legal, more than 8,000 same-sex couples have tied the knot in Massachusetts, the only state to allow gay marriage. The ballot measure would ban future gay marriages in Massachusetts but leave existing ones intact.
Romney, who opted not to run for a second term as governor this year, is nearing a decision on whether to seek the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

Navajos’ desert cleanup no more than a mirage
Through a federal program, decontamination seemed possible. But delays and disputes thwarted the effort.
Church Rock Mine, N.M. — Most of the mining companies that drilled, dug and blasted for uranium on the Navajo reservation during the Cold War did nothing to repair the environmental damage they left behind. For a time, tribal leaders staked their hopes for a cleanup on Superfund, the landmark legislation that forces polluters to pay for remediation of toxic sites.
More than 1,000 abandoned mines are scattered across the Navajo homeland, which covers 27,000 square miles in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.

Iraq conflict passes WWII (1348 Days)
THEY were America’s days of infamy, 60 years apart – Pearl Harbour and September 11. The first led the US into World War II, a
conflict it endured for 1348 days; the second was followed by a war that from tomorrow will have lasted even longer.
America’s involvement in Iraq will reach that milestone at a time when the clamour for withdrawal has never been louder, and the possibility of achieving it has never seemed so difficult. The decisive end of World War II in 1945 delivers no lessons that could be applied to a very different war in a very different era.
If anything, things seem to be getting worse, the options less appealing. Baghdad is reeling from the deadliest assault on Iraqi civilians since the start of the US invasion in March 2003. At least 200 people died and more than 250 were injured after six car bombs, mortar attacks and missiles battered the Shiite Muslim slum of Sadr City.
Plumes of black smoke and anguished screams rose above a chaotic landscape of flames and charred cars, witnesses said.

PETA mistakenly targets church’s nativity scene
Confused pastor tells animal rights group that no real animals were used
The pastor at Anchorage First Free Methodist Church was mystified. Why was the activist group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals chastising him? No animals are harmed in the church’s holiday nativity display. In fact, animals aren’t used at all.
People, however, do dress the parts — Mary, Joseph, the wise men, etc. The volunteers stand shivering at a manger on the church lawn in a silent tribute to Christmas.
The Rev. Jason Armstrong was confused by an e-mail this week from PETA, which admonished him for subjecting animals “to cruel treatment and danger,” by forcing them into roles in the church’s annual manger scene

U.S. Finds Iraq Insurgency Has Funds to Sustain Itself
BAGHDAD, Nov. 25 — The insurgency in Iraq is now self-sustaining financially, raising tens of millions of dollars a year from oil smuggling, kidnapping, counterfeiting, corrupt charities and other crimes that the Iraqi government and its American patrons have been largely unable to prevent, a classified United States government report has concluded.
The report, obtained by The New York Times, estimates that groups responsible for many of the insurgent and terrorist attacks are raising $70 million to $200 million a year from illegal activities. It says that $25 million to $100 million of the total comes from oil smuggling and other criminal activity involving the state-owned oil industry aided by “corrupt and complicit” Iraqi officials.
As much as $36 million a year comes from ransoms paid to save hundreds of kidnap victims in Iraq, the report said. It estimates that unnamed foreign governments — previously identified by senior American officials as including France and Italy — paid Iraqi kidnappers $30 million in ransom last year.
A copy of the report was made available to The Times by American officials in Iraq, who said they acted in the belief that the findings could improve American understanding of the challenges the United States faces in Iraq.

Marcos: “We Are On the Eve of Either a Great Uprising or a Civil War”
Calderón Will Begin to Fall from the Day He Takes Office, Warns the Rebel Leader
Bagdad, Tamaulipas, November 23: December 1, the day that Felipe Calderón takes office, will be “the beginning of the end for a political system that, since the Mexican Revolution, became deformed and began to cheat generation after generation, until this one arrived and said, ‘Enough,’” warned Subcomandante Marcos during a press conference. Calderón, he added, “will begin to fall from his first day.”
He stated, “we are on the eve of either a great uprising or a civil war.” As to the question of who would lead the uprising, he responded, “the people, each one in his or her own place, within a system of mutual support. If we can not succeed in having it happen that way, there will have to be spontaneous uprisings, civil explosions all over, a civil war in which each person is only looking out for his or her own well-being, because the possibility is already there for things to cross that line.” He cited the case of Oaxaca, where “there are no leaders or political bosses; it is the people themselves who have organized. It will be like that across the entire country.”

Cobra meets over fears about assassination squad
25 November 2006
John Reid, the Home Secretary, chaired an emergency meeting of Cobra, the Downing Street crisis team, yesterday over fears that the murder of ex-Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko could mean an assassination squad is targeting dissidents in London.
Senior officials from health protection, the Department of Health, the Atomic Weapons Establishment, the Metropolitan Police and the intelligence services were summoned to the Cobra meeting, underlining the seriousness with which the Government viewed the assassination with radioactive material.
Mr Reid was briefed on the risks to the public health from the radioactive material used to poison Mr Litvinenko. NHS Direct was informed how to handle panic calls by members of the public worried they could be at risk.
Europe’s growing anxiety over Moscow’s slide from democratic values overshadowed an EU-Russia summit yesterday in Helsinki as the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, struck a defiant and assertive tone.

bite your tongue.
Are you listening to the Very Holy Noam?
:priest:
“International Communist Conspiracy…”
ouch. She’s right Nicki 🙁
Hey. I can walk to Mt. St. Helens. Portland has a volcano within the city limits. Don’t talk to me about the ever present volcanic danger.
no, I’m having trouble paying attention to things right now. Is that on the same website? I will tomorrow
you can walk to Mt. St. Helens? Whoa. It looks like it’s about 80 or more miles from Portland according to this map you sent me. Of course if you really make an effort….
You live right on the ocean. What the fuck is that Puget Sound all about. A tidal wave will cruise right through it. Portland, on the other hand, is 80 miles inland.
And I can throw a rock and land it on Mt Tabor.
Lurker! Lurker!
ohh ok I won’t lurk. Oh wait, I wasn’t to begin with.
which volcano (other than helen — she prolly shot her wad for a geological while)?
is mt baker nearby. they’re all linked. the native am’s had a whole creation-type story about the range but i can’t remember who did what to who. i think rainier & baker were rivals for the fair slopes of helen…or something like that.
susan & nicki, how are you guys? how was thanksgiving? surly relatives? drunken revelations?
I didn’t do much this year, Roxie. I took a rain check on seeing my mom, she lives about 70 miles from me in Central Jersey and I wasn’t up to travelling. I basically spent it alone. I’m supposed to see her and my brother next Sunday so we’ll have some sort of big meal then
Portland’s Mt. Tabor was named after another Mt. Tabor, which sits six miles east of Nazareth in Israel. :sdavid: Our Mt. Tabor makes Portland one of only two cities in the continental U.S. to have a volcano within its boundaries; the other city is Bend, Oregon.
:fist:
I love northwest Native American stories…there are so many good ones. Yeah, I think all the volcanos had distinct character/personaltie is the stories. They do similar things with mountains in Chinese folk stories as well and maybe in other cultures. Every mountain (and especially volcanos!) are quite “alive”
Get the connection?
CIA Monitor!
I would love to see a volcano up close (not while it’s erupting, though…)
Speaking of eruptions…
:omg:
What time do you think the Thought Control Squad will arrive?
after I go to sleep or work…I’m actually supposed to work a few hours tomorrow morning. Er, this morning.
I::joe: I’ll be back in the afternoon though
Work Sunday?
I don’t usually, but they asked me to work in another branch that’s open Sundays just this week, and I could use a few extra dollars.
personally I’d prefer to catch up on sleep but I already told them I would  it’s just four hours
What time do you have to be there? (Private dialogue.)
Exclusion!
9 AM. Ooops yeah. Sorry. 9 to one. And then maybe I go to the funk shoe store next door and buy a pair of boots, I’ve been dreaming about getting funky boots for like the past six months and haven’t
White Castle!
Look, there’s just you and me logged on, I can’t include anyone else. Oh yes! There’s a bagel store next to that HLC branch also :pent:
white castle, oh baby. You really know how to say those things!
Get me hard ones.
Censored
portland may be inland but it’s a pretty flat inland — and doesn’t portland lie onoir very the columbia river mouth?
puget sound is inside that huge peninsula thing out there to the west of seattle. the olympic penisula would act as a huge breaker for the sound.
mt rainier is pretty far away but there’s a valley running north thru the kent valley to the “rainier valley” in southeast seattle. i had a dream a few months ago that my house was now on a lake — the bottom of the ridge i live on had filled with water.
is mt. tabor more or less active?
we’re all at Gaia’s mercy anyway…fleas on a dog!
Willamette/Columbia
Astoria is on the mouth. That sound is huge. So, the Denny Regrade is going to slide into the Puget Sound.
damn, lost my internet connect for a couple of minutes :omg:
Do you ever hang out on NE 6th Avenue?
I wish I could ship you bagels but they’d just be stale by the time they reached you
Hey. That one place ships them. 40 bucks a dozen.
We excluded again.
denny regrade & a couple of streets thru downtown seattle running along the whole waterfront (esp pioneer square area) will liquify in a big quake.
hmm, interesting, what place is that? Never mind, I’ll research it myself…
Poland!
hey, i’m still here (off & on)
i’m on my number 1 mobile deevice and am typing on a keypad with a stylus….
extra sllloooowwwww.
You sound like a geologist.
ok, whatever you do don’t say the N word. Oh you know, that dirty third party…ok, I won’t even think it. Cancel cancel my thoughts.
Liquified rocks.
I love geology, plate tectonics, glacial erratics, all that earthy stuff…oh yeah, my connection is still slow too… I understand
wait a minute:
you can get Polish bagels shipped for $40 a dozen?
Transcend the Dems:

:fist:
well NY style Jewish bagels (I guess that’s Polish?) I think. I want more info from Nicki…it’s a lot of money when you’re used to just buying them in the store, but I guess if they’re hard to get in certain ares…
a lot of downtown, esp the older parts were elevated one floor with fill cause the sewers & toilets would back up whenever the high tide came in.
there’s a tour in Pioneer Square, called the underground tour, where you can visit some of the old storefronts and original groundfloors of the older buildings.
anyway, the fill basically liquifies in an earthquake — turns into quicksand sort of — and heavy stuff, like buildings, sinks. but not straight down unfortunately. i’m sure there’s computer animations somewhere on the net. i’ll have to look one of these days.
sounds like you guys are about to go. nice to talk, lurk, be excluded again! later…
:nana:going to the bills game with my roommate!
