It was one year ago today that Morning Seditionists went live. I think it was the same day that Marc officially broke the news to us that the show was officially dead, but I’m not positive about that. Anyhow, at the time, we only had a couple of weeks left of Morning Sedition. I hadn’t been much for the old MS blog, mostly because I was generally trying to get my shit together and get ready for work, but in that last month and a half or so, I started going there quite a bit, trying to hold on to a piece of the show that got me out of bed and in the mood to face the day. I thought for sure that damn petition would do some good, or at least the list and maps of the locations of the folks who signed it – over 1300 unique locations in 33 nations around the world – would make them see just how popular the show was. Rather naive, I suppose.
I didn’t know if anybody would actually come over here, or, if they did, how long after the show was over that interest would die out, and that would be the end of that. It’s hard to believe this place not only outlived both MS and the Mark Maron Show, but may damn well be around for the end of the the AAR era, too, though I’d prefer they get a true liberal bazillionaire (if there is such a thing) to buy them out, and hire somebody that knows how to run a radio network to manage it.
So, it turned out people actually did show up here. In the past year, there have been over 165,000 visitors (about 450 a day, give or take), and about half of those are return visits. That’s not exactly Yahoo numbers (good thing, because this damn web host is flaky enough as it is), but it’s not too shabby for a show that never got any promotion, was on in the middle of the night on the West Coast (if it was on at all), forced many of us to jump through all sorts of hoops just to listen to it, and required both a brain and sense of humor to appreciate. It really was something special.
Anyhow, we made it to a year. Let’s see if make it to two.
Take care, and no sucking up.

US car sales to fall to decade low
November 28, 2006
AFTER a string of strong years, US car sales are slowing and an increasing number of forecasts say sales could fall next year to their lowest in nearly a decade, the Wall Street Journal reported overnight.
Slowing growth in the overall US economy and a slump in the housing industry, particularly in big markets such as California, come at a bad time for General Motors, Ford Motor and DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler Group, the newspaper said on its website.
IRN, a Michigan market researcher, forecasts US 2007 sales of 16.3 million light vehicles, or cars and trucks. That would be the lowest since 1998 and a drop of 300,000, or 1.8 per cent, from this year’s expected sales of 16.6 million vehicles.
Some car makers are more optimistic, the paper says, with both GM and Toyota Motor forecasting 2007 industry sales of 16.5 million cars and trucks. But analysts at Bank of America, Wachovia Corp. and Citigroup expect a sharper decline, as does investor Wilbur Ross, who has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the past 18 months buying battered auto suppliers, the WSJ says.

Peace sign Christmas wreath can stay
DENVER A Colorado woman can display her Christmas wreath shaped like a peace sign after all.
The homeowners’ association in the Pagosa Springs subdivision where Lisa Jensen lives has withdrawn its threat to fine her 25 dollars a day unless she removed the wreath.
…
Jensen tells The A-P she got a letter from the board last night that called the incident a “misunderstanding.”
Before the order was rescinded, Jensen said she received hundreds of calls of support and offers to help her pay the thousand-dollar fine that would have been due if she kept the wreath up until after Christmas.

Congressman calls Miami a `Third World country’
“Rep. Tom Tancredo, the leader of the anti-illegal immigration faction in the U.S. House, spent a recent weekend at The Breakers in Palm Beach.
Ninety miles to the south, he found a symbol to bolster his belief that unfettered immigration is endangering the United States: Miami, he told a conservative online news site, “has become a Third World country.”
In South Florida to attend Restoration Weekend, a gathering of conservative activists, the Colorado Republican, whose district includes suburbs of Denver, pointed to Miami as an example of how “the nature of America can be changed by uncontrolled immigration,” the story says.
“Look at what has happened to Miami,” the WorldNetDaily quotes Tancredo as saying in an interview. “It has become a Third World country. You just pick it up and take it and move it someplace. You would never know you’re in the United States of America. You would certainly say you’re in a Third World country.”

Oil prices climb as Saudi Arabia hints at OPEC cut
London, Nov 28: World crude prices rose after oil kingpin Saudi Arabia suggested that OPEC might need to cut output further at its next meeting in December, analysts said.
Traders also reacted to news yesterday that Iraq’s main northern oil distribution centre was in flames after being struck by two mortar shells.
New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in January, won 62 cents to USD 59.86 per barrel in pit trading. In London, Brent North Sea crude for January delivery gained eight cents to USD 60.11 per barrel in electronic trading.
“Prices have continued to move up… Finding support in comments by the Saudi Oil Minister over the weekend, warning that OPEC would cut production again at its December meeting, should the recent production cuts fail to balance the market,” Barclays capital analyst Kevin Norrish said.

Ex-spy’s poison on the Internet; $69 can get you a trace
Keay Davidson, Chronicle Science Writer
Tuesday, November 28, 2006
It’s one of the deadliest imaginable poisons, a radioactive substance about 100 billion times as deadly as cyanide — and a Web site run by a physicist and flying saucer enthusiast offers to sell you a trace amount of it for $69 and send it via the U.S. Postal Service or UPS.
Contrary to early news reports, polonium-210 — the poison suspected in the death of an ex-Russian spy in England — is not some exotic material available solely from nuclear laboratories. The isotope is available from firms that sell it for lawful and legitimate uses in industry, such as removing static electricity from machinery and photographic film.
… In the United States, it is legal for vendors licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to sell small amounts of polonium-210 and other radioactive sources without the buyers having to receive special permission from the government.
United Nuclear Scientific Equipment & Supplies of Sandia Park, N.M., will sell you a small amount of polonium-210 for $69 in a small, yellow, disk-shaped container. The firm offers a long list of available radioactive sources on its commercial Web site — which includes buttons marked, “Add to Cart” next to items for purchase.

Iraq tells Iran “we are desperately in need of help”
TEHRAN — Iraqi President Jalal Talabani arrived Monday for two days of talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, admitting that Iraq was “desperately in need of help” to quell escalating insurgent attacks.
Talabani’s trip had been delayed for three days because the Baghdad airport was closed in the wake of the bombings in the capital on Thursday.
The visit by Talabani, a Kurd from northern Iraq with long ties to both U.S. officials and Iranian leaders, was described by analysts here as a sign that Iraq’s neighbors, who have taken in thousands of refugees since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, are now fearful of chaos spreading across their borders. Syria’s President Bashar Assad also was invited by the Iranian president, but officials here cast his attendance as unlikely.
Iran’s state-run television broadcast Talabani’s arrival and the prospects for cooperation as its lead story. Both presidents were seen sitting in Ahmadinejad’s presidential complex and flanked by aides.
“We have no limits in offering our help to our brothers in Iraq, the Iraqi nation and the Iraqi government,” Ahmadinejad told the news media. “If there is peace and stability in Iraq, there is peace and stability in Iran, and there would be peace and stability in the region.”

Indian shares fall on U.S. worries
Tue Nov 28, 2006 4:49 PM IST
MUMBAI (Reuters) – Indian shares fell 1.25 percent on Tuesday, their biggest percentage fall since early October, as investors dumped technology stocks amid concerns of a slowdown in the U.S. economy, while Colombo stocks posted a record close.
India’s 30-issue benchmark BSE index dropped 171.64 points to end at 13,601.95 points, its lowest close since Nov.20, with 25 stocks in the red. It had hit a record high on Monday, when it also posted its 12th record close in 19 sessions.
“This is the start of a bearish phase and the market may fall further to 13,200 or 12,950 levels,” said Niranjan Singh Shekhawat, a technical analyst with HDFC Securities.
“There was a crucial support at 13,625, which has been breached, I guess aggressive traders are seen going short.”
Technology firms suffered the most and pulled down the index, which is still up about 5 percent so far in November, after U.S. stocks had fallen on signs of weakness in economic activity
(~snip~)
A slowdown in the U.S. economy would hurt their earnings, as that market accounts for more than 60 percent of their revenues.

Orders for manufactured goods plunge
By MARTIN CRUTSINGER
AP Economics Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) — Orders for big-ticket manufactured goods plunged in October by the largest amount in more than six years, in another sign of a slowing economy.
The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that demand for durable goods fell a larger-than-expected 8.3 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted $210 billion, reflecting a big drop in demand for commercial airplanes, a category that had soared in September.
It marked the third month in the past four that orders have either fallen or shown no gain, providing evidence that the nation’s factories are beginning to feel the impact of the slowdown in the overall economy.
The 8.3 percent drop in orders for durable goods, items such as airplanes and autos that are expected to last at least three years, was the largest one-month decline since a 14 percent plunge in July 2000. It followed an 8.7 percent surge in September.

Gingrich: US may be forced to reexamine freedom of speech
A former Republican speaker of the house mulling a possible presidential run has said that America may need to reexamine freedom of speech in order to prevent future terrorist attacks.
According to a New England newspaper, Newt Gingrich “spoke to about 400 state and local power brokers last night at the annual Nackey S. Loeb First Amendment award dinner, which fetes people and organizations that stand up for freedom of speech.”
Gingrich said that a “different set of rules” should be considered to reduce the ability of terrorists to use the Internet and abuse free speech to get out their message.
“We need to get ahead of the curve before we actually lose a city, which I think could happen in the next decade,” Gingrich said.
Gingrich also said that he would make a decision whether or not to run for president by September of 2007.

Tourists flock to Fisherman’s Wharf for the seafood and the stunning views of San Francisco Bay, but for many visitors, the real stars are the dozens of playful, whiskered sea lions that lounge by the water’s edge, gulping down fish.
Now a series of sea-lion attacks on people in recent months has led experts to warn that the animals are not as cute and cuddly as they appear.
“People should understand these animals are out there not to attack people or humans. But they’re out there to survive for themselves,” said Jim Oswald, a spokesman for the Marine Mammal Center across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

Melina, but gosh 😳 , I believe that all presents should be given to yourself or “gremlin” 😉 (Grandpa’s ol’ joke, I was even a “gremlin”:rofl2: ) — but something especially JUST FOR YOU :wink:
Third World, the technologically less advanced, or developing, nations of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, generally characterized as poor, having economies distorted by their dependence on the export of primary products to the developed countries in return for finished products. These nations also tend to have high rates of illiteracy, disease, and population growth and unstable governments. The term Third World was originally intended to distinguish the nonaligned nations that gained independence from colonial rule beginning after World War II from the Western nations and from those that formed the former Eastern bloc, and sometimes more specifically from the United States and from the former Soviet Union (the first and second worlds, respectively). For the most part the term has not included China. Politically, the Third World emerged at the Bandung Conference (1955), which resulted in the establishment of the Nonaligned Movement. Numerically, the Third World dominates the United Nations, but the group is diverse culturally and increasingly economically, and its unity is only hypothetical. The oil-rich nations, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Libya, and the newly emerged industrial states, such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore, have little in common with desperately poor nations, such as Haiti, Chad, and Afghanistan.

G’afternoon Druid. Melina, I was too tired to type last night but you are right, we still have some cobblestone streets. The street I live on is still cobblestone and we have managed to keep it by not asking the City for repairs. If fact, we have done some of our own repairs
But, more and more they’re being paved over.
As for development, it’s a two edged sword. On the one hand more people mean less likelihood of noxious uses. On the othe hand there are more people and one of the tings I loved about Red Hook was the low density.

Dru,
No precipitation but cold. I saw a picture in the paper this AM of the Seahawks game last night and the snow was coming down.
Sue P, Maybe that is why I avoid the Wharf, the killer sea lions. I do have a friend who swims to Alcatraz and back on a regular basis. I have not heard from her recently now that I think of it. I was just down there at the Ferry Plaza but I think the ferry traffic may keep the sea lions away. They have only been down there since Pier 39, another commercial endeavor, was built back in the late ’80s.
I remember a few years ago abalone poachers were shooting sea lions down the coast because they thought they were messing with their business.
Cold is not a San Francisco value.

The National Weather Service is calling for 2 to 5 inches along the Front Range and up to 8 inches south of Denver by tomorrow night.
Weather service meteorologist Bob Koopmeiners said this system is dropping south out of the Gulf of Alaska, and while it isn’t expected to be a big snow producer, it will usher in temperatures we have forgotten since last winter.
“We’re estimating temperatures will drop into the teens this afternoon and tonight, and below zero tomorrow night if the clouds move out,” Koopmeiners said.
“Thursday it will only rise into the 20s.”
And on top of that, another system may be zeroing in on the state later on in the week.
Snow will continue to fall in the high country with accumulations of 6 to 13 inches, and as much as 18 inches in mountains of western Grand and Jackson counties.
The Weather Service predicts 20 inches of snow may fall in the northern mountains near the Wyoming state line before it tapers off Wednesday evening.

Hello everybody,
Nice to see that Travisdem has re-appeared.
The most difficult thing I ever installed in a computer was a ATI Video card. Or was it my first attempt at installing a new drive? I forget. I generally get rather flustered, kick a few things, curse and (out of frustration) walk away. The old adage of “try and try again” works for me. I just never give up. So its nice to see you having such fun and with a feeling of accomplishment Kristapea. My blood pressure made me switch to a Mac. Lot less headaches. But I must admit a fondness for my old windows boxes. The geek in me loves to play around inside the box.
BTW, Nice job Andy on your latest creation! I look forward to hearing more. You are indeed a man of many voices.
Try an old LINUX box sometime..With little to none plug and play after you install the OS it can be quite entertaining.:slap::reaper:
Re 83 Fred, that last emoticon would be appropriate to my state of health if I tried tinkering with a Linux box. I’d like to live a few more years. Just long enough to see if Democrat control is just a fluke or a new way of life.
Has n e one here heard anything in regard to a buyer for Air America Radio and what does it portend should one not be found?
I think I’m gonna buy the first season of the “Beverly Hillbillies”. I need a good laugh. I also hear that “Gomer Pyle USMC” will soon be released on DVD. I used to love coming home from school and watching old reruns of these shows in the afternoons. Oh and “Bewitched” was cool too. Abner!
Last I heard, they were in “active” negotiations with a buyer, which is why they got an extension from the bankruptcy court. If they are unable to find a buyer, I believe it means that they’ll need to liquidate their assets and use the money to pay off their creditors to whatever extent they can.
Okay, so I downloaded Robbie Williams CD, “Rudebox” this weekend and included the title track as out-tro bumper music for today’s podcast. That song makes me wanna get up and dance. I’m around lurking in my corner of the room.
Oh, Linux is cool. And free. The box that’s running sedition radio is on an old PII 450, with 192 megs of RAM, and about a 5 gig hard drive (I think). It’s been up and running since October 18, and the only reason it was down since September 4th was because the circuit breaker popped, and my UPS is DOA.
The federal US computer security watchdog has issued a warning about a bug in Apple’s OS X operating system.
The US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US Cert) issued the alert after security researchers produced code that could exploit the DMG bug.
***
The warning from US Cert said the memory corruption caused by the bug could make a computer unstable or allow an attacker to hijack it. It urged users to avoid downloading DMG files, which bear a .dmg suffix, from unknown sources.
The bug even affects machines that are patched with the latest fixes.
Apple has yet to provide a fix for the DMG bug though a workaround is known which should stop computers falling victim.
The bug has only been proved to work under laboratory conditions. No cases of it being exploited in the wild are known and no users are thought to be at risk. The availability of the exploit code might tempt some malicious hackers to craft webpages that take advantage of it.

Nothing in the usual places about AAR but I found this ..thrill.. thrill…
Yes, PJ I think the court had granted a weeks extension or something. So I guess Air America will be no more without a buyer. And so Seder would likely join Nova M? So it sounded like Marc Maron was close to arriving at a radio deal also. I wonder if anything has come of that? With all the unemployed AAR radio personalities I’d think it would be smart of Marc to make a deal quick before the market is bloated?
I have had Norton Antivirus installed on my Intel Imac since buying way back when just out of precaution. I donno about the bug you describe Fred. Hopefully Norton will protect my machine from any ill effects.
We still have a couple of Intel 486s running Linux ..It works just fine unless you upgrade some device in the box..Then it usually does not run at all for several weeks.:eek:
Prolly some tech creating a problem where none exists just to maintain their job. I’m such a conspiracy theorist!
I guess Marc doesn’t think NovaM is a good fit. I guess he can either try and get a local show going and hope to syndicate it, or do his own thing and try and get subscribers (if he ever gets his darn website up and running, it would help). I guess something on a satellite channel would be an alternative, too.
I think progressive (or at least non-wingnut) radio got a real boost from AAR, as mismanaged as it has been, and has opened up a lot of markets. But the Clearchannel sale might be a problem. They seemed willing to go with liberal programs if they could make a profit, but the new group sounds like a bunch of wingers.
Who knows with Seder? I like him, but whether he’d get another offer, who knows?
So PJ is there some kind of automatic refresh where mychingo message center is concerned? I see a “transferring data from http://www.mychingo.com . . .” at the bottom bar of this window.
Yeah, it’s actually an embedded flash movie, being called from their website.
I must confess to not listening to liberal radio with much frequency since the November election. I know the battle is not yet won. It appears we shall always be in a fight for the hearts and minds of the American people. I just need a rest from all this. I do so hope that AAR survives. I really enjoy Seder. But he is about the only one I listen to anymore. I resent Franken because I see his bloated salary as one of the reasons a potential buyer might just as soon opt out. Perhaps I am wrong or maybe any buyer could take what they want from AAR and leave ppl like Franken behind. I donno how all that works. Don’t get me wrong here. I have enjoyed many of Al Franken’s shows. But does he really rate a million dollar salary? I don’t think so. If he really believes in the cause and is not just in it for the money then perhaps it is time for him to pass the baton on to someone else. A fresh face, a new personality.
I would assume that any new owner would be responsible for whatever contracts have been signed, but who knows how their contracts are structured, and what they’d wind up doing. If I’m near a computer, I currently listen to Bill Press in the morning, and then Sam Seder. I’ve been listening to Al again after that, though I miss at least an hour or so, ‘cuz that’s my dog walking time these days. Then I listen to Randi if I can stand her, and Peter B.Collins. But, I also spend a lot of time listening to The Loft on XM (via DirecTV, which I really ought to dump, the dirty red bastids), and then my Rhapsody music stations (which I also feel guilty about, because it’s a Real Netoworks – Rob Glaser – thing).
And I have a shitload of old time radio to fall asleep with (been doing a lot of X-1, Dimension X, Suspense, Gunsmoke – much, much better than the TV version – and The Shadow – the Orson Wells ones are my favorites).
Melina sent some of us (on one my first live broadcasts) a copy of her grandfather’s radio show “The Inner Sanctum.” I confess not having listened to them as yet. I really need to add them to my ipod shuffle and give a listen while on-the-road.
Yep, those are classics. As are the CBS Radio Mystery Theater programs.
Maybe I’ll give a listen now. Well, I’ll be around if anyone wants to talk just give a shout.
At a private reception held at the White House with newly elected lawmakers shortly after the election, Bush asked Webb how his son, a Marine lance corporal serving in Iraq, was doing.
Webb responded that he really wanted to see his son brought back home, said a person who heard about the exchange from Webb.
“I didn’t ask you that, I asked how he’s doing,” Bush retorted, according to the source.
Webb confessed that he was so angered by this that he was tempted to slug the commander-in-chief, reported the source, but of course didn’t. It’s safe to say, however, that Bush and Webb won’t be taking any overseas trips together anytime soon

Wow 😮 cnick…calling roxie stupid? (your 11/28/06 podcast) :fustrate:
:smack:
She is one of the smartest, kindest, most generous people I have ever met. She has been a lifesaver to me and travis.
She wrote from her heart. Live and let live.
 Not cool. :spank:
I said she was stupid for leaving the blog because of all this. I stand by my statement.
Yes I agree that Roxie wrote from her heart when she wrote the following and I quote:
“So who wrote the parody? My first guess was cnick. He
fired the first (public but apparently not private)
shot in the anti nick & susan show. It also had a kind
of bitchy gay guy feel to it. But, as far as i’ve
seen, cnick’s pretty out front in his snarkiness. Plus
he’s usually not around the blog at that time of day.
My guess is pj. He can be very funny and he’s always
articulate and to the point. If it’s not pj, he
certainly knows who wrote it and approves.”
What’s “not cool” is taking me out of context sblueheron and I don’t appreciate that.
This is just a test of something to truncate really long links so that they don’t mess up they layout, so you don’t need to click on it (unless you’re in the market for an 80 gig color iPod with video for $332).

I find that stuff so much better then most teevee shows.
Good Evening all. One thing I would like to say is that emailing, blogs etc.are sometimes very confusing forms of communication and can be interpreted in many ways sometimes that are not intended. Sometimes the mind can impute things that are not there, or are there but are misinterpreted. I observe that meanings are clarified when there is a personal connection between the parties, and when people do not know each other miscommunication prevails. I know sometimes I have made statements and thought afterwards…oh shit….they did not think I meant that! I just hope that if people have been hurt we can discuss it patiently and hopefully with love and friendship. Personalities sometimes clash and a time out is needed. We are all very different and have different stresses in our life. I truly do not think anyone is intentionally being evil here.
MLM,
Well said.
Don’t forget Part 2 of Lincoln airs tonight on Boston Legal. Right now in fact Eastern time.

There is nothing that can adequately describe the rediculous CRIME it was to disband the group of peeps who put together this show, hell, even Riley gave it the college try and kicked ass. I also miss any bits that even made reference to NEWS DADDY…dammit that is funny!

Heres some good news!:hot:
LONDON (Reuters) – The earth has a fever that could boost temperatures by 8 degrees Celsius making large parts of the surface uninhabitable and threatening billions of peoples’ lives, a controversial climate scientist said on Tuesday.
James Lovelock, who angered climate scientists with his Gaia theory of a living planet and then alienated environmentalists by backing nuclear power, said a traumatized earth might only be able to support less than a tenth of it’s 6 billion people.
“We are not all doomed. An awful lot of people will die, but I don’t see the species dying out,” he told a news conference. “A hot earth couldn’t support much over 500 million.”
Gee, thanks for that bedtime story, Mr. Moonlight.
