A bit more seasonable today, about 30 degrees cooler than yesterday, and maybe a little snow. I’ll have to see how much got blown away with the wind last night, as soon as it gets light out.
By the way, the poll over there on the right is open to everybody, not just registered users, so you lurkers should feel free to vote. I’ll leave it open through the weekend, at least. Then I’ll try and think of something a little more original to ask. Suggestions are always welcome.

Weak dollar bleak for world economy
Transatlantic travelers hoping to cash in on a $2 pound for the first time in 14 years should enjoy the good times while they last, because a tumbling dollar could start an economic whirlwind.
snip..
But the fact is that the sharp rise in the pound – up 14 per cent against the dollar this year – is not a vote of approval for the UK economy but a damning verdict on the outlook of the world’s largest economy by experts in the financial markets
snip…
Experts have been warning that the US and the dollar have been living on borrowed time. Non-stop spending by US households has delivered a record trade and current account deficits. The dollar has held up because overseas investors, especially the Chinese and other Asians governments are keen to buy dollar assets. But recent comments by the Chinese central bank about the need to move into other currencies helped trigger the start of the dollar’s recent slump a week ago. Private investors have also be keen to buy into US Inc but the prospect of further falls in the dollar could encourage them to cash in their chips now, pushing the dollar down further and creating a vicious cycle.
In its most recent forecast the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that if that happened there would be a “disorderly unwinding” that would see a rapid fall in the dollar, volatile movements in the financial markets and a “significant hit” to the world economy. A weak dollar would put up the prices of imports, discouraging Americans from spending. It would ALSO drive up inflation and force the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. That could transform its stagnant housing market into a financial disaster zone. A consumer-led recession would hit those countries that have done well by selling to Americans.
snip
The IMF yesterday declined to comment further. However after five years of issuing warnings over the dollar and the global imbalances, the IMF is taking action. It has launched multilateral talks to allow big players such as the US and China to talk frankly in private about the possible ways to reduce these imbalances without triggering the market reaction they dread.

Wolf hater admits poisoning protected species
SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) – An outspoken opponent of U.S. government efforts to reestablish the gray wolf in western states has pleaded guilty to trying to poison the federally protected species, a U.S. prosecutor said on Friday.
Tim Sundles, 48, planted meatballs laced with a poisonous pesticide in Idaho’s remote Salmon-Challis National Forest in 2004 with the aim of killing wolves, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Fica.
The meatballs instead poisoned a coyote, fox, magpies and three pet dogs, according to court records. He signed a written plea ahead of a scheduled trial next week.

Threats to celebrities bring charges
By Greg Krikorian, Times Staff Writer
December 2, 2006
A federal grand jury indicted a Woodland Hills man Friday on charges of sending threatening letters with white powder to half a dozen politicians and celebrities, including incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and television personalities Jon Stewart and Keith Olbermann.
The 14-count indictment accuses Chad Conrad Castagana, 39, of sending the letters from Sept. 7 through Nov. 9 to those three as well as Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, comedian and late-night talk show host David Letterman and Viacom Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone. The powder turned out to be harmless.
From the LA times
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 30 (AP) — Advanced Micro Devices said late Thursday that it had received a subpoena from the Justice Department regarding an investigation into possible antitrust violations in the graphics processor and card business.
A.M.D., based in Sunnyvale, Calif., is a leading maker of microprocessors that act as the calculating engines of personal computers. It entered the graphics chip market this summer, agreeing to acquire ATI Technologies for $5.4 billion.
That move was seen as a strategic blow to Intel, A.M.D.’s much larger rival, and one that would allow A.M.D. to broaden its product portfolio in a continuing attempt to banish an image as a small competitor that sold microprocessors and flash memory chips. The deal was completed in October.
A.M.D. said that the Justice Department had not made any specific accusations against it or ATI, and that it intended to cooperate with the investigation. A spokesman declined to comment further.

Good Morning :joe:
Seems to be warming up here. Don’t need the space heater this morning. I was talking to my dad in Fla yesterday and he said he put his AC on yesterday it was so warm and muggy.
It snowed again last night :yuck:
:cold::cold:
No snow here (nothing on the ground, anyway), but it’s a bit cooler than it’s been. Not supposed to get out of the thirties today. That’s not as cold as you’ve had it, but that’s OK by me. A little snow on the ground would be nice, too.
I know you do not want me to keep saying this but:

Tidbits from Malloy last night. Right now his show is only over the air in Phoenix and SF(!). Nova M will have some satellite thing going at the end of the year. He thinks they will be on XM and Sirius. He thinks AAR will be gone in 10 days (cum grano salis). He also stated that when AAR started everybody (EXCEPT Franken) seemed to be united in a mission to bring a similar message to their listeners.
Nevada’s state fossil, the giant ocean-roaming fish-reptile known as the ichthyosaur, will have to share the scientific stage after researchers this week unveiled the first fossils of land-based dinosaurs ever found in Nevada.
The discovery expands the known range of the prehistoric beasts and offers a new understanding of life in the state some 100 million years ago.
snip
The remnants, found at secret excavation sites in southern Nevada, pushed the known range of the ancient reptiles about 250 miles farther west, said Joshua Bonde, a graduate earth science student at Montana State University who is leading the dig.
It marked a breakthrough in a state that had only turned up marine fossils until now, said Eugene Hattori, the state’s curator of anthropology.
The state was largely underwater or nonexistent when the ichthyosaur swam the seas more than 200 million years ago. While the seas receded and the area became land about 145 million years ago, evidence of ancient land-based animals in Nevada previously did not exist.

The new chief of the U.S. General Services Administration is trying to limit the ability of the agency’s inspector general to audit contracts for fraud or waste and has said oversight efforts are intimidating the workforce, according to government documents and interviews.

We certainly don’t want to intimidate employees. Underpaying them and cancelling their pensions and healthcare seem sufficient.
Intimidating employees, right.
Oh, that reminds me, I have to add Malloy to Juice and start downloading him again.
FEMA redrew the flood map. “All of a sudden, the lenders are requiring flood insurance where they did not in the past.” The only source “for the kind of insurance the lender requires is somebody like Lloyd’s of London. It might have a $50,000 deductible, and still be prohibitively expensive.”
http://tinyurl.com/yguebg
Apparently FEMA and insurers believe in global warming.
I also heard Malloy last night as well, and he told it like it is.
On Fred’s poisoning of wolves news story, this is an ages old issue. People have a cultural and almost heriditary hatred of wolves. Fairy tales told from generation to generation instill an irrational fear into people, and some take it to heart and go over the edge. Fascinating really on how it manifests as primordal displays of evil, much like the typical Rush Limbaugh listener.
Yeah, and they’re such beautiful animals (the wolves, not the Limbaugh listeners).

Now apparently I have to get a multimedia phone headset because I could stream these shows from my new treo but the headset jack is tiny and needs something special. The one provided with the phone is one of those ipod hard disc thingys that falls right out of my ear…I seem to lack a bit of cartiledge where the vast majority of americans have it….but maybe a bluetooth one is better anyway…I put a 2 gig card in this baby and can transfer shows and everything to that. I live on the waterfront in Brooklyn. The old floodplain map has been incredibly accurate. It actually shows which streets will flood. The last time a hurricane hit Brooklyn the floods were where they were mapped to be.
Red Hook, where I live, is a flood plain. My house, however, is slightly higher and is in the 500 year floodplain, or at least it used to be. We didn’t need flood insurance when we bought it 20 years
However, in the last few years, without hurricanes, there are streets that flood regularly. That’s new.
On Long Island, the Peconic Bay is clearly encroaching on the land and some streets that did not flood, now flood regularly when the tide is higher than usual.
I tried to see that new FEMA maps but they want money for them and they are listed under numbers which I can’.t decipher.
Hey, try a little bubblegum on the earbud. That oughtta hold the sucker in there.
Tho other thing I wanted to mention about cnick’s skyp chat is that last week I was in a chat for around 10 minutes that was the wrong chat…I think this has happened to others. When cnick saw me online listening ot the show he came and got me and added me to the official chat.
Meantime I was chatting with him with no reply and asking him to add me over an over…and he was talking away on his show.
I thik this has happened to some others…
be sure that you havent created your own chat because is not for sure that nick is gonna see it and be able to process the whole thing between the official chat, the levels and technicial stuff of podcasting live, the other windows opened…and all of that.
the chat is opened to everyone unless he spcifically states that it is a certain type of chat (in which case, Ill happily not be there anyway…though Id like to to be in the tranny one)
So be sure that youre in the correct chat and that if youre not you instant message someone else if Nick isnt answering…
I thnk its hard to juggle all of that alone. Thats why people have producers.
but dont I need a new tech gadget with bluetooth??????? maybe I can get one with a chip in my brain so I can read consumer reports while I multitask and talk on the phone!!

I think humans just tend to be afraid of creatures that are smarter and morally superior to them.
I saw a nifty pair of bluetooth speakers that automajically pause your mp3 playback when you take a call, and then start it back up when you hang up. Of course, they weren’t headphones, but they were cool. My talking GPS will do that, too. When I’m listening to an mp3, it pauses it and tells me “yo, you gotta take a left” and then starts it up again.
I have to admit, I love that damn thing. Around here, I just have it on while I drive around, ‘cuz I know where I’m going, usually. But now I actually know the names of streets that I’ve driven around all my life. The other day, I had to go someplace I’d never been before, and I just got in the car, tapped the address in, and let it tell me how to get there.
Melina, I know the church on Warren. I always wonder about people who live right above that trench. It really traps the fumes and funnels them right up to their windows.
Many years ago we looked at a house above the trench. I think it was the one next to the fire station. It was VERY cheap but the idea of breathing exhaust fumes really seemed unwise.
Maybe if your fumes are filtered through a million dollar mortgage they smell better, or they give your kids a rich case of asthma.
The hill in Cobble Hill was made landfill in Red Hook. Lowering that elevation didn’t help Cobble Hill but it made Red Hook less of a swamp. The price of progess? :rofl2:

From Robert Novak:
Sen. Harry Reid, leading the Senate’s new Democratic majority, is framing next year’s schedule in a way that will make it difficult, if not impossible, for President Bush to give recess appointments to nominees blocked for confirmation.
Reid’s schedule limits Senate recesses to one week. Recess appointments usually are made only when Congress has been out of session for at least 10 days. That may kill any consideration of trying to seat federal appeals court judges whose nominations had been stalled even in the Republican-controlled Senate.

Another reason to breathe a bit easier.
I used to have an aquarium w/o a lid. I used to find the little suckers on the floor all the time. Those betas can last quite a while. Pick ’em up, blow the dust off ’em, and chuck ’em back in.
PJ, when I load the blog, a little white rectangle flashes in the photo at the top. It says, “my voicemail” I think. That has not happened before.
Damn, that Reid’s a pretty smart fella. It says “usually,” ten days though. I wonder if there’s an actual rule in there somewhere.
Farmerkat , 😉 I can understand the teenager. I am O (blood). When I was younger (a teenager:eek:) I loved the taste of meat (still do but…). and my sister who was a vegetarian gave me a test to see if I was meant to be a “vegetarian”. I Failed. :omg: Now the roles are reversed 😆 :omg:

It’s been warm here all week too. There’s a cold front coming on Monday that should push our lows down into the low to mid 50’s, and highs around 70. Yeah, I know, I suck. 😆

Sean- I had bookmarked ‘the progressive american’ online for Krugman, Rich, et al. It’s been swept clean by NYT. It referred me to topplebush.com, but same story there- nada. One day before the midterms, Rumsfeld wrote a set of options for Iraq. I’ve edited them . The original is really interesting.
¶Publicly announce a set of benchmarks
¶Significantly increase U.S. trainers and embeds,
¶Initiate by putting one or more Iraqi soldiers with every U.S. and possibly Coalitio squad
¶Aggressively beef up the Iraqi ..Ministries of Finance, Planning, Health, Criminal Justice, Prisons, etc. — by reaching out to U.S. military retirees and Reserve/National Guard volunteers (i.e., give up on trying to get other USG Departments to do it.)
¶Conduct an accelerated draw-down of U.S. bases.
¶Initiate an approach where U.S. forces provide security only for those provinces or cities that openly request U.S. help
¶Stop rewarding bad behavior, as was done in Fallujah … Put our reconstruction efforts in those parts of Iraq that are behaving, ¶Position substantial U.S. forces near the Iranian and Syrian borders to reduce infiltration and, importantly, reduce Iranian influence on the Iraqi Government.
¶Withdraw U.S. forces from vulnerable positions — cities, patrolling, etc. — and move U.S. forces to a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) status, operating from within Iraq and Kuwait, to be available when Iraqi security forces need assistance.
¶Begin modest withdrawals of U.S. and Coalition forces¶Provide money to key political and religious leaders (as Saddam Hussein did), to get them to help us get through this difficult period.
¶Initiate a massive program for unemployed youth.
¶Recast the U.S. military mission and the U.S. goals (how we talk about them) — go minimalist.

Democrats tap religious leader for radio talk
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democrats turned to an evangelical Christian to give their weekly radio address on Saturday, citing a desire to avoid partisanship after last month’s elections that gave them control of Congress.
“I want to be clear that I am not speaking for the Democratic Party, but as a person of faith who feels the hunger in America for a new vision of our life together, and sees the opportunity to apply our best moral values to the urgent problems we face,” the Rev. Jim Wallis said in his remarks.
Wallis, author of 2005’s “God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets it Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It,” highlighted issues that he said required a new direction, including U.S. policy in Iraq. He also called for new efforts to combat poverty and protect the environment.
