As we ring out the old year, and ring in the new, it’s always fun to look back and see who died. I certainly can’t do justice to death the way that Mort Mortenson can, so you may want to stop by thesnotgreensea.com and poke about through the archives there. And if you appreciate the great job he’s done over there (there would be no Sedition Radio without it), you may want to help him out with a donation to pay for his hosting costs.
Aside from the US Military people and Iraqi civilians who died needlessly in 2006 (there are, sadly, too many to mention), there were – as always – quite a few “celebrity” deaths throughout the year. Today, I’ll list a few of the deaths from the first six months of the year This is by no means a comprehensive list (it’s much too long as it is), so if I’ve missed your favorite dead guy (or gal), feel free to chastise me severely in the comments. It would be a nice contrast to all of that sucking up you were accused of doing.
January
Way back on January 2nd, the rather inept bisexual bank robber, John Wojtowicz (played by Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon) died of cancer. The $7,500 he earned by selling the rights to his story helped to finally transform his partner in crime (among other things) Ernest Aron into Elizabeth Debbie Eden. Alas, Ms. Eden passed away from AIDS-related pneumonia back in 1987.
Also in January, Ramona Bell, the 47 year old wife of radio host Art Bell, passed away, allegedly from an asthma attack (smoking and asthma – not a good combination). It didn’t take Art long to jump back into the saddle, though, as he married his third wife – Airyn Ruiz – just three months later. They say empowerment is the final stage of grief, and it must be true, since the Bells are expecting their first child in June.
Lou Rawls passed away at the age of 72 (from lung and brain cancer, which doesn’t sound good, does it?) on January 6th, which is the same day that they pulled the plug on Hugh Thompson, Jr., a chopper pilot in Vietnam who (along with his crew members Glenn Andreotta – who died just three weeks later – and Lawrence Colburn) was instrumental in putting a stop to the My Lai massacre.
Chris Penn – Sean’s brother – died on January 24th at the age of 40, from a combination of cardiomyopathy and multiple medication intake. Henry Zapruder (son of possibly the world’s most famous amateur film maker, Abraham Zapruder) died the same day, from brain cancer.
On January 30, Coretta Scott King went to join her husband Martin, at the age of 78, and Yippies co-founder Stew Albert passed away form liver cancer.
February
On February 3rd, America lost its Grandpa – longtime lefty rabble rouser, actor, restaurateur, Green Party candidate for NY Governor, and College Basketball Scout (among many, many other things), Al Lewis. And on the 8th, Akira Ifukube – composer of the musical scores for the Godzilla movies – passed away at the age of 91. Three days later, the author of Jaws – Peter Benchley – died from pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 65.
Andreas Katsulas – who played G’Kar in Babylon 5, Commander Tomalak in Star Trek: TNG, and the one-armed man in the movie version of the Fugitive, among other things – passed away from lung cancer at the age of 59 on February 13th.
Sportscaster Curt Gowdy died on February 20th from leukemia, at the age of 86. My favorite memory of him came during a Buffalo Bills game. After OJ Simspon ran for a touchdown, Gowdy excitedly exclaimed, “OJ’s been picking his hole clean all day!”
Two TV legends passed away on February 24th. Don Knotts – who will forever be remembered as Barney Fife, not to mention Mr. Limpett, and possibly as the illegitimate father of Mick Jagger – passed away at the age of 81, as did Dennis Weaver (who played Chester on Gunsmoke, among other things – also 81). The next day, we lost Darren McGavin – who played Kolchak in The Night Stalker, as well as the much beleaguered father in A Christmas Story). He was 83.
March
On the first day of March, Johnny Jackson (drummer for the Jackson 5, but, interestingly enough, not actually one of those Jacksons) was stabbed to death at the age of 54. Dana Reeve (Christopher Reeve’s widow) and Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett – both 45 – died on March 6th. Slobodan Milosevic died on March 11th (they say heart attack, but of course we all know he was murdered, and that Wes Clark and Bill Clinton are the real war criminals). Maureen Stapleton (who did not play Edith on All in the Family) passed away from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the age of 80, on March 13th. On March 25th, Buck Owens, known best (to me, anyway) from Hee-Haw, died of a heart attack, at the age of 76.
March 27th saw the deaths of Dan Curtis (who produced Dark Shadows) and Ronnie Reagan’s press secreatry, Lyn Nofziger (which I think is Nils Lofgren spelled sideways). Speaking of dead Republicans, Caspar Weinberger (HEW secretary under Nixon and Ford, which apparently qualified him to be Sec Def under Reagan) died the next day.
April
Gene Pitney (who wrote such songs as Town Without Pity, and Hello Mary Lou) died on April 5th at the age of 66, from a broken heart (no, seriously, he had heart disease). William Sloane Coffin died from CHF on the 12th, as did Puggy Pearson, Kazuo Kuroki, William Woo, and Mushin Musa Matwalli Atwah (all of whom I include for alliterative purposes only).
May
Earl Woods, who taught his son Tiger to play golf (much like my dad taught me to play golf, though I obviously lack Tiger’s talent), passed away at the age of 74 (which is the same age as my dad was when he died), of prostate cancer (which is sort of what my dad died of, except what he really died of was the torture they put him through in order to “cure” it). On May 8th, George Lutz – who moved into the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, just thirteen months after Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed six members of his family there (the Lutz’s got a real “deal” on the house, though they only stayed there for 28 days) – passed away at the age of 59.
Former heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson died on May 11th at the age of 71, from Alzheimer’s disease and prostate cancer. On the 14th, the second Clarabell the Crossdressing Clown, Lew Anderson, died of prostate cancer, at the age of 84.
On May 23rd, 85 year old Lloyd Bentsen (who pointed out that Dan Quayle was “no Jack Kennedy,” and later served as Bill Clinton’s Treasury secretary), passed away.
On the 29th, CBS News sound man James Brolan (42) and cameraman Paul Douglas (48), died from injuries sustained in a car bombing while reporting with the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division in Baghdad. Billiards champ Steve Mizerak died that day as well.
June
On June 2nd, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and former Tubes member Vince Welnick became yet another Grateful Dead keyboard player to meet a tragic end, after committing suicide. We lost another keyboard player four days later, as Billy Preston died of kidney failure at the age of 59. On June 7th, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a US military strike, finally bringing an end to the violence in Iraq.
On the 23rd, Aaron Spellings – who brought us such classics as Charlie’s Angels, Beverly Hills 0U812, and Tori – passed away at the age of 83. A day later, Patsy Ramsey, mother of, well, you know who, died of ovarian cancer, as did 38 year old homeless advocate David Owen, who was murdered.
Tomorrow, I’ll list deaths that occurred in the second half of the year (including any more last minute additions).
i’m up a little late, so i’ll start things off….

Woman offers snow up on eBay
LOVELAND (AP) – As if Colorado residents don’t have enough snow to dig out from, one resident is offering more for a price on eBay.
Starting bids were holding steady Friday at 99 cents for snow from “Blizzard I and Blizzard II” being offered by Mary Walker. She and husband, Jim, got the idea for selling snow after shoveling mounds from two storms a week apart that together dumped more than 4 feet along the Front Range.
“I figured eBay has ghosts and all sorts of weird stuff, so why not snow?” said Walker, who teaches business workshops on employee communications.
How much snow 99 cents or whatever the winning bid gets depends. Walker’s auction notice suggests avoiding shipping and handling charges by stopping by their home and picking it up — in a dump truck.
Only 10 offerings of snow are available and the proceeds are earmarked for a used snowblower for Jim or a pair of shovels.
She says she doesn’t really expect to find a buyer for their blizzard overstock.
“We just wanted to just give some folks a laugh,” she said.

Pakistan could become next US nightmare
IT HAS more than twice as many people as Iran, six times more than Iraq, many primed for Islamic extremism by a legacy of poverty and illiteracy left by decades of misrule by corrupt secular leaders, civilian and military.
It already has nuclear weapons, and ballistic missiles made with North Korean help. It shelters jihadists battling Western forces across its border, and fanatical cells training Muslim youth in Western countries to put bombs on buses and metros.
If Iraq has turned into a nightmare for the US President, George Bush, think about Islamists gaining power in Pakistan, population 166 million, and their hands on its nuclear arsenal.

I have to agree with quietgirl. Satan and Saddam united in the underworld doesn’t bode well for Kenny. He may be killed by the end of the day! (You BASTARDS!)
Full disclosure: Saddam and I have the same birthday, April 28. Although he was older and therefore had it before I did.

Apple Faces Suit Over iPod-iTunes Link
Dec 30, 7:22 AM (ET)
BY BETSY SCHIFFMAN
NEW YORK (AP) – As if its options woes weren’t trouble enough, Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) (AAPL) said Friday it is facing several federal lawsuits, including one alleging the company created an illegal monopoly by tying iTunes music and video sales to its market-leading iPod portable players.
The case, filed July 21, is over Apple’s use of a copy-protection system that generally prevents iTunes music and video from playing on rival players. Likewise, songs purchased elsewhere aren’t easily playable on iPods.
The plaintiff is seeking unspecified damages and other relief. The court denied Apple’s motion to dismiss the complaint on Dec. 20.
Another lawsuit, filed Nov. 7, alleges that the logic board of Apple’s iBook G4 fails at an abnormally high rate. The plaintiff is seeking unspecified damages. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple said its response to the complaint is not yet due.

hi sheeple!
Notice from Fred’s post 36, the following and I quote: “Likewise, songs purchased elsewhere aren’t easily playable on iPods.” Everyone seems to want to protect their territory. As for the G4: That’s old technology. All current Apple offerings use Intel based processors, the same ones used in PC’s. Law suits are a fact of life. I wonder how many law suits are pending against Microsoft?
:tommygun: take that evil locust horde!
hi cnick!
I personally have not found the limitations of the iPod a problem. Yes, I’d like it if we could do anything with the music we purchase. But there are Artists out there – singers, musicians and the like – that are having their work stolen from them. When someone copies a CD they purchased at the music store and give a copy of it to a friend that is one less sale. The Artist’s work is in affect stolen.
Hey Sean! Where u at?

Hey Krista,
Sorry to not respond earlier but I was off to the movies. Anyone who hasn’t seen Blood Diamond should check it out. Very violent in stretches (hell, practically the entire movie), but the violence was necessary to illustrate the point of the movie. Excellent film. Not to mention that I always enjoy looking at Jennifer Connolly. :hubba:
I probably won’t be back on the blog until Tuesday morning, so I’ll wish everyone a happy and safe New Year. Enjoy your choice of beverage :alc: and look forward to all the :crap: that the multitude of House and Senate investigations will turn up in 2007.

:tommygun:kids wit AK’s are scary…………
No Melina I’m not gonna do one this weekend. Sorry to run but I got to watch the stove top. Cya all later . . . maybe!
My, my. A might touchy re: the old iPod. 😉 The article should have read, likewise, songs purchased from other sources that will play on every other player, aren’t easy to play on the iPod, because Apple wants to force you to buy iPods and buy your music from iTunes exclusively.
That’s nice, because you’ve always had the legal right to make copies for personal use. The big problem with all the DRM crapola is that they are taking away fair use, and it’s just not right. I don’t care who it is.
And when they start shipping music CD’s with rootkits (as SONY/BMG did, until they got caught doing it), or that won’t play in my computer’s CD drive (SONY/BMG again, and EMI), then it starts to get pretty annoying. Next, you’ll have to “authorize” your CD player in order to play a CD that you bought. So if you want to play it on your car stereo, you’ll first have to deauthorize either your boom box or your home stereo, or your portable CD player, first. And forget about grabbing your CD’s for that road trip in your friends car, ‘cuz his CD player aint authorized to play your CDs. Oh, and if your portable player gets stolen and you can’t deuathorize it, then what? Jump through a billion hoops and hope you can rely on the kindness of the company that issued the CD? Yeah. Or you accidentally hosed your CD? Tough shit, ‘cuz you aren’t allowed to make a backup copy of the CD you paid for. It’s madness, I tell you. Madness! :growl:
And, as far as DRM goes, if we have to be driven, like sheep off a cliff, to having it, I hope the courts force Apple to open up the iPod and iTunes so that it’s compatible with all DRM schemes – or, better yet, that a DRM standard is developed that everyone – everyone – has to stick to. That will ensure competition and lower prices for both devices and music.
re 54 😎 (:rofl2: )

So how is an Intel MAC any different from an Intel PC ?? The TPM or what ever it is called keeps OSX from running on a PC but OSX is just another version of linux with a cute GUI .. The cases, motherboards and power supples are all proprietary and I think they even have mother board video. In a year the whole thing is obsolete and you can’t upgrade them. They could have at least used AMD and gotten some performance out of them . The software packaging may be attractive but it is not like you couldn’t build an Intel PC with something similar .. :reaper::reaper::tongue:
thats what Ive been wondering myself Fred…
hey, for all your string theorists who also kint and deal in yarn here are some cook articles and even instructions on how to crochet your own model of chaos!
Aside from the TPM, they went with a proprietary Unix kernel (to enforce the TPM). From what I’ve read, only a small fraction of the OS requires the TPM, and it’s been hacked to bypass those parts that do, so it actually will run faster on non-Mac hardware, albeit at a loss of some functionality, which I gather is rather unimportant. Of course, Apple is very, very litigious, so you want to fly under their attorney’s radar if you’re messing with that stuff.
I would like to have seen M$ split into separate OS and software companies. The software co. would be encouraged to make software for all OS’s, and the OS company would benefit by making its OS compatible and open to all software, instead of putting in special hooks that only it knows about, to make its own software run better on it.
It would be nice to see Apple split into a hardware and a software company, too. Then its OS would have to become capable of running on any hardware (one reason it has avoided a lot of problems is its tight grip on hardware – it doesn’t have to try and be compatible with everything, the way Linux and Windows do), and the hardware company could continue to manufacture its “cool” hardware, so that it could easily run other OS’s, the way an IBM clone does.
Never happen, though.
When we were experimenting with MACs we put Redhat FEDORA 4 Linux for the Power PC on them bypassing OSX entirely .. The Linux developers need a better software development platform something like Visual Studio or Visual Studio .net There is a module called mono that provides the .net framework under LINUX and allows one to run .net programs built on a PC under X windows . There is even a version of mono for Sun work stations. If you look at C# it begins to smell and look a lot like Java with another name .
Likewise programs written in Java can run on Windows , Sun and Linux platforms.. Sun just released a GUI development interface for windows for their Java product .. It is hard to believe that most Java and GNU development is done in an development environment that still runs in a command window .:yuck:
The nice thing about OS X prior to the Intel deal was that they used an open source Unix kernel, so you could tweak it to improve performance or do other stuff that those geeky programmer types know how to do. Now it’s proprietary. Too bad. I think everything should be open source, so you can play with it, if you want (and know how). This software licensing crap is a big scam AFAIC. You pay for something, but you don’t actually own it.
re #54 pj, you pretty much nailed it.
As for and artists’ interest, Apple could give a rat’s ass about anyone’s interest other than their own. Their approach to the music business is to portray themselves as some kind of savior or white night that will save a dying industry while all the while exercisng monopoloistic and predatory behavior that let’s them push folks around and ‘compete’ unfairly. The more territory they control, the more power they have.
The simple fact that they want me to give them $70 to replace a battery that was defective in the first place tells me where their head is at. There is nothing democratic about these guys.
Open source is great for the people on the development teams that grew up with it so they know how all the parts interact .
. It looks like Redhat has at least three teams of people working on code in total isolation from each other since the code one sees in various revisons of the kernel is never the same . The libs they use all seems to be different and not the latest either . it is most confusing .. 😮
I like that smart people can take what others have done, and then carry it farther, or in a new direction. And also that it’s open, so you can see what’s in there. Look at this voting software in the FL-13. We all know it’s fucked up, but the judge ruled the source code can’t be inspected. NFW should that be possible – that voting software can’t be publicly inspected. Even if there’s nothing malicious in there, the smart people should be able to look at it, bang on it, and try and break it, so that it’s the best it can possibly be.
awwww, you guys. S got me a 2GB nano for xmas, I took it back and upgraded to 4GB and got a nifty green one-it’s so cute laying there in it’s box like a new shiny ornament and how you guys are talking trash about computers that I couldn’t understand in 100 years but you’re taking my Apple buzz down fast.:santacool:: —> :crap:
Well, iPods are perfectly good at playing non-DRM-crippled mp3’s, so I’d stick with those. I really like the allofmp3 site, ‘cuz you can choose the encoding and the quality. Plus, the prices are good.
I don’t write it guys I just deliver it.
We are not talking trash about Apple .. Their personal products are the pioneers in that arena just their support network is looking very red in its nature ..
Speaking of red in nature the FCC is allowing AT&T to buy back Southern Bell.
One has to wonder what the crap shoot would do if the congress tries to do another Teddy Roosevelt and break up these global monopolies .:yuck:
Is it an urban legend that you can go around a CD with a magic marker so that it will play in any device? Have you heard that one or did I just dream it?
I read that part of the ‘deal ‘ is that ATT won’t fight Net Neutrality but of course Congress would have to act to support that part of the agreement and I’m sure they’re just blowing smoke to get the deal done. :fu:
One can only hope the tyrannosaurus eggs that get thawed out due to global warming are near DC or Wall Street Yum… rethugs are yummy… Yum..:rant1:
There was some CD copy protection scheme that you could thwart by going around the edge with a magic marker.
ATT had to make concessions to Net Neutrality to get their merger. The merger sucks, but the concessions were good.
I think it was Sony that put their ID marks on the outside tracks of their DVD movies,The encoding would screw up the typical DVD copying software but the fix was to make the outside tracks unreadable by using a magic marker to obscure the tracks
But id the concessions are not followed are there any legal consequences? I can’t imagine this Justice Dept enforcing anything
Well, the agreement is for two years, or until Congress passes a law. I suppose somebody would have to get screwed over and initiate legal action. One thing it does is define net neutrality, which the telcos had previously said was “too vague” to define, so that, in itself is good. Also, it sets a certain precedence. Tim Wu lays it out pretty well at that link above.
Great I just get up here and 😮 :yippee: 😎 :yippee: great “writing of it all” re posts

I can take my little iPod and load it with songs I’ve collected over the years and yes some that I purchased from the iTunes store and plug it into my car stereo and enjoy the music while I travel down 280 during the week. Or if I should choose I can even take my new iPod shuffle into the offices where I work and listen. The music goes with me just like any other MP3 player. I wonder why every Windows user on this blog is so touchy about their Windows Operating system? My oh my. The fact remains that we’ve all witnessed from this very blog the tales of the buggy Windows software. It is subject to a myrid of viruses and from what I read here seems to break down much of the time. Most of the computers I’ve owned were Windows based computers. I’ve owned Windows 95 up to Windows XP and XP Professional. I have never owned Windows 2000. I have had far fewer problems with OSX. That is a fact. And the fact remains if you want to podcast and create websites you will have to purchase additional software to do so because Windows XP and its earlier versions did not come with software built-in to do same. All new Apple computers come with iLife. iLife contains all the tools you’ll need to edit video, create an audio or video podcast and create a website. If you want to do that with the Windows operating system you will have to purchase additional software.
aww cnick!
I’m 100% behind you here!
Back to:knit::cold::joe::cat:
Also remember what I wrote here last night. All Intel Apple computers will boot Windows XP, XP Professional and the new Windows Vista. So why box yourself in with hardware that cannot boot both operating systems? I know that there are some people on this blog that like to build their own computers. That’s great! If you want to build a computer from the ground up then you have that option. Cool. Don’t buy Apple if what you want to do is build a computer. If you want to create a work of art, a podcast, a song, a movie, purchase Apple. Also be aware of a software program that you can purchase called Parallels. This software will allow you to create virtual machines on a Mac. So you can have Windows and OSX both running at the same time. And you can also create a virtual Linux machine too! So I’m not trying to piss anyone off here on this blog. But it seems that there is endless bashing of Apple products here. No one can say I suck up to PJ on this blog huh? I’m just telling it like it is. Like it or not!
CNick, But I like putting in a new program :hubba: and reading about new software. I learn by doing. Not already have it installed … but we can all get along … you like yours and I like mine. But I am a brand new bitch’r about 2000xp or whatever? Just by reading “what I call a Debate “[:yippee:] I have learned much and possible software problems. I am just SAD since THIS AREA horribly slow . :fustrate: . That is where ultimate trauma resides.

As for Vernon’s problem with his battery. Vernon, if I’d just purchased an iPod and the battery went out I’d be pissed too. If Apple wants $70.00 I’d be having a hissy fit too. I have an older iPod, an iPod Nano and a new iPod Shuffle. The older version iPod still works fine. I guess I’ve just been lucky not to have the problems that your experiencing. Sorry man. I feel for you. Keep bitching till they do you right!
Fred is only half right about upgrading hardware inside an Apple box. I said here the other day. If you think you might wish to add a larger internal hard drive or a new video card to your Apple Mac then you need to purchase a Mac Pro desktop. Do not purchase a Imac if you think you might want these kinds of hardware upgrades. You cannot upgrade the hard drive in an Imac, nor the video card. So purchase a Mac Pro desktop if you think you may need to do these things later. I can with my Imac add additional external drives. I currently have a 250 Gig hard drive built into my Imac. And I have a 250 Gig external USB hard drive. I wish I’d purchased a firewire external hard drive. That will likely be my next purchase as the USB hard drive just does not cut it. So as for Fred saying that Macs cannot be upgraded that is only half true. You can upgrade Mac Pro’s. Go here to read about Mac Pro’s.
Fred, re 72 … awaken from the egg, I stretch and say,”I am hungry. Hmmm Rethug. Yum. :growl:

You can upgrade the memory (RAM) in all Macs. I maxed mine out at 2 Gigs. Two gigs is the maximum amount of ram allowable for the Imac. The Mac Pro desktop and Macbook Pro laptop allow for greater ram and the processors have more horsepower. I don’t think what we’re debating here is so much a hardware issue as it is a software issue. I contend that the Windows operating system is buggy. Much more than it should be given all the years of research Microsoft has put into the system. From what I understand Windows is attacked more by hackers and virus writers because it is the most used operating system in the world. And I suspect there are far to many people using Windows without adequate Virus protection.
I was disturbed to read that Microsoft’s new operating system, “Vista” is also subject to security issues. I was hoping that Microsoft was finally coming out with a system that was immune to the issues which plagued Windows. Back to the drawing board I guess. Or endless software patches.
… lets talk aethetics … I like the dark sleek obtion and not the look the “whatever look of Apple… although I have a crush on Steve Jobs [but I heard he is “gay” :rofl2:]” 😎 :rofl2:

I am not (let me repeat) I am NOT saying that OSX is perfect. But I can attest here that I have had far fewer issues with OSX than I ever had with my many Windows boxes. That is my experience with Windows vs. OSX. If you doubt this then I’d say purchase a Mac and see how many “F” words you use when using a Mac. I bet your mouth won’t be quite so filthy then.
If you like the darker side Druid then perhaps you should remain a Windows user!
CNick, When one is The Standard of The World … security is a problem … just like Identity Thief. 😉

One last thing about Windows vs. Mac. Ask Marc Maron which operating system he uses? Answer: OSX! If Marc likes Apple computers then I feel I’m in good company. Case closed.

I’ll prolly be in bed when the ball drops tomorrow night Druid. Thanks for the good wishes, And thanks for being my friend. I guess I’ve alienated most here. That’s to bad. I just believe in free speech and I doggedly stand behind my Apple computer. Should I say I am a “Apple enabler”? Have a Great New Year Druid and everyone else on this blog.
I think I have burnt out all on this site too … We Bad. :spank: :alc:

Good night everyone!
Harp cures all. Hard bagels, too.
D_666, I will try to Harp sometime tomorrow for NYrs.
CNT, I only meant that by presenting objective info on IPod, I did not want it to seem like an endorsement. I find their products fine and wildly popular to many (obviously) but not entirely worthy of the devotion their fans try to project on the rest of the world.
Lights out, y’all. Happy whatever this holiday is that makes it so they had to rush out and kill Saddam before dawn. :reaper:
I am a Libra too and it was standard in “academia” and “the biz”; therefore I chose the sleek, fighting ready, PC — with the Mystery screensaver ext and The Mystery Library, which was part of “a conjuring” … I rest my sleek, sexy PC to the “bulbous” Apple :rofl2: 😎 :rofl2: A Joke :rofl2:
