I hope y’all had a good first day of 2007. Damn, 2007 just sounds so “futuristic,” doesn’t it? Sometimes I feel like I’m living in a Sci-Fi story. I guess I’ll have to start getting my shit together to go to DC next week. It’s not something I’m looking forward to, that’s for sure. I suppose I’d better update the old resume, and maybe wash some underwear. Although, if it comes down to the underwear, I figure I pretty much got the job.

In Response to Post-9/11 Concerns, Pataki Is Granted 24-Hour Security
By NICHOLAS CONFESSORE
George E. Pataki, who became a private citizen yesterday, will be assigned a 24-hour security detail, a privilege rarely offered to a former governor.
A spokesman for Mr. Pataki, David Catalfamo, said that Mr. Pataki’s staff had asked the state police, which provides security to governors while they are in office, to evaluate whether Mr. Pataki would need security after leaving office.
“We asked whether or not it would be necessary going forward, and they said it would be,” Mr. Catalfamo said. He said it would cost the state about $20,000 a week, and possibly more, depending on the number of state police officers assigned to the job. Mr. Catalfamo would not comment specifically on the level of security that would be provided.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer also approved the arrangement, said Christine Anderson, a spokeswoman for Mr. Spitzer.
“They’ll take the steps to make sure that he has sufficient security,” she said.
Mr. Catalfamo noted that Mr. Pataki was the first governor to leave office since the Sept. 11 attack. “I think there’s a greater awareness and sensitivity of the security of New York governors and elected officials in a post-9/11 government,” he said.
He added that the arrangement would most likely be temporary, and would be re-evaluated by state police officials each month. He also said the state police would probably seek additional advice on the matter from outside law enforcement agencies, like the United States Secret Service.

Dollar Falls; U.S. Factory, Jobs Data May Show Slowing Economy
Bloomberg
By Ron Harui and Chris Young
Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) — The dollar fell for a fifth day against the euro on speculation U.S. reports this week will show job creation slowed and manufacturing growth stalled, bolstering the case for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates.
Data due today and tomorrow may show Europe’s factories expanded at a faster pace and German unemployment dropped, adding to signs that the European Central Bank will raise borrowing costs. The dollar slid against 15 out of the 16 most actively traded currencies tracked by Bloomberg.
“Disappointing numbers this week will get us back to thinking when will the Fed cut rates next,” said Harvinder Kalirai, head of research in Sydney at State Street Corp.. “The Fed will cut interest rates and the U.S. rate advantage will erode, weighing on the dollar.”
The dollar fell to 118.74 yen as of 11:57 a.m. in Tokyo compared with 119.01 at the close of trading in New York yesterday. It also dropped to $1.3239 per euro from $1.3174. The U.S. currency will slide to $1.35 in the next three to six months, Kalirai forecast.

Democrats To Start Without GOP Input
Quick Passage of First Bills Sought
Tuesday, January 2, 2007; A01
As they prepare to take control of Congress this week and face up to campaign pledges to restore bipartisanship and openness, Democrats are planning to largely sideline Republicans from the first burst of lawmaking.
House Democrats intend to pass a raft of popular measures as part of their well-publicized plan for the first 100 hours. They include tightening ethics rules for lawmakers, raising the minimum wage, allowing more research on stem cells and cutting interest rates on student loans.
But instead of allowing Republicans to fully participate in deliberations, as promised after the Democratic victory in the Nov. 7 midterm elections, Democrats now say they will use House rules to prevent the opposition from offering alternative measures, assuring speedy passage of the bills and allowing their party to trumpet early victories.
Nancy Pelosi, the Californian who will become House speaker, and Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, who will become majority leader, finalized the strategy over the holiday recess in a flurry of conference calls and meetings with other party leaders. A few Democrats, worried that the party would be criticized for reneging on an important pledge, argued unsuccessfully that they should grant the Republicans greater latitude when the Congress convenes on Thursday

With Shelf Space Prized, Fairfax Libraries Cull Collections
By Lisa Rein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, January 2, 2007; A01
You can’t find “Abraham Lincoln: His Speeches and Writings” at the Pohick Regional Library anymore. Or “The Education of Henry Adams” at Sherwood Regional. Want Emily Dickinson’s “Final Harvest”? Don’t look to the Kingstowne branch.
It’s not that the books are checked out. They’re just gone. No one was reading them, so librarians took them off the shelves and dumped them.
Along with those classics, thousands of novels and nonfiction works have been eliminated from the Fairfax County collection after a new computer software program showed that no one had checked them out in at least 24 months.

Gerald Ford, an incompetent, never-elected past president, is being memorialized today by one of his good buddies and close confidantes, Dastardly Dick. The execution of Saddam Hussein is being celebrated by a bloodthirsty media and another never-elected, execution-happy, incompetent president. Here is a technical question for the ladies here..
I have this Knitted Afghan that got “dirty” and needs to be cleaned .
If I wash it in the bath tub in warm water then tumble dry ( no heat) it will that work..??
fabric content? hand knit or machine knit?
Hand knitted.. A bunch of bright colors
I’d handwash it in cold water (bathtub would work), roll it up in a towel to gently squeeze out extra water, reshape it on a towel or two to block dry. Heron or Gypsy may have more informed advice.
Thanks Kat
off to walk and then a boat load of paperwork crap.
Ciao!
Cheers, I am back…. Everytime I do my “chores” for this time, when I get upstairs I feel like screaming :safe: :hot:
Fred you should go and get a “gentle” soap for delicate wash. [Preferably “natural” — possibly look on web for “around house natural “soap”.) With decent soap, you should be able to wash BY HAND In Cold (so you do not set in stain)}
I agree with Farmerkat re “blocking”, but I do have a tendency to take the intense “wet” tumble to DAMP (not even near dry) then “block” drape. Check WEB for all types of “super-natural” which you may have to do or go IN SNOW to a store.:rofl2::eek:

Fred, Bright Colours or Black [Mwah HaHa], you do not want to AT ALL = NEVER Wash in Warm:!:  😉 😎 If it is handknitted then WASH IN COLD — NEVER WASH IN WARM:!: (even Polywhatever) It will keep it’s “shape” or “knit” or “form” or whatever 🙄 — setting stains in is bad “juju”, but always . And a pain in :spank:.. You could wash “polywhatever in warm, but if stained one could set in stain. 😮 😉

Martha Stewart had on a Men’s show yesterday…I never watch her but she had Jamie Oliver and it was that or…nothing…so…
She was showing the ashing of such sweaters and said that she had found this certain soap that is so great for these delicate things….let me try to find it….
they even have a soap for black colors.
Kat is right about the towel blocking….its dry there so you should be able to get it mostly dry on a towel, changing the towel of course as it gets more dry….here it would have mildew in a couple of hours….I like the air tumble thing but with something like that you could ruin it….
Here ya go fred….INstructions from Martha herself…
I would use woolite or the store brand of woll washer…but look at how she suggests a little fabric softener into the basin….that makes sense.
I cant find the name of the soap she was talking about…..but Im gonna look for it….

At least not for wool!
Ok I’ve had a sip of coffee and I am calmer now.
Fred you are better off using Dawn. A lot of wool spinners like Dawn and I guess :penguin: like’s it too. But I like Brown’s top of the lamb shampoo for wool found in yarn stores.
I have ruined wool sweaters with woolite. It puts a weird coating on the wool.
I never use fabric softener so I would never consider that.
The thing about the water temp is that you don’t want to “shock” the wool with drastic temperature changes and agitation that will felt it. Washing an afghan is a hassle. I would use the washer just as a soaking and spin-out device. Fill the basin with water (warm is ok if no stains) Turn the machine off. Soak for at least 30 minutes but no more than an hour. Flip the dial to the spin cycle and spin out water. Fill the basin again with the same temp water. The spin cycle will cut your drying time way down.
Drying it will take some time. I would probably try to hang it over my shower curtain rod (over towels) as long as it wasn’t dripping wet.
OK that is my “expert” advise. I have made all of the heedless woolwashing mistakes there are over the years.
Fred if the fiber looks sparkly it may be acrylic …then I dunno I am not an acrylic expert.
sblueheron, :yippee: :pirate: I’m radical, though since I do not use Woolite, either. But everyone does.

PJ needs to beat up his web server provider The blog keeps timing out , displaying a blank screen and Done on the status line .:growl::growl::growl:
in comparison Apples basic models are very underpowered and there is not a lot of choice. So its important to upgrade…especially the Ram, which is low even for the basic user…the graphics cards also have to be looked at if you do any graphics intensive stuff…and the HDs are much smaller than comparable PCs. There is only so much to choose from…and its, of course, perfectly possible to configure a great system…but within their framework which is rather limited.
Suddenly, it became clear to me while reading about all of these choices, that its much easier to control and keep up and running a system that is so controlled.
PCs are open to such a spectrum of the manufacturing market and canbe put together by anyone….so, they can be much less stable….not to mention Microsoft….though Leo La0Porte likes Vista alot….

What I’m looking for are hops with high latency, although I think it’s more to do with the db server, since static pages don’t load so slowly. I am dicking around w/ the support people before I switch hosts, which will be a big hassle on a lot of levels. Thanks.

It’s really not all that bad, if the price is right why bother?
Well, the static pages aren’t too bad, but there are sometimes some real slowdowns in the blog stuff. I’m sure it’s from having a shitload of db’s on one server, and they also keep everything locked down pretty tight. Your numbers weren’t nearly as bad as what Vernon and I had. Right now, things are a bit better, but they were terrible earlier today.
yeah…things really stood still for a while. I kept getting a white screen….

Pat Robertson Predicts ‘Mass Killing’
7:25 PM PST, January 2, 2007
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — In what has become an annual tradition of prognostications, religious broadcaster Pat Robertson said Tuesday God has told him that a terrorist attack on the United States would result in “mass killing” late in 2007.
“I’m not necessarily saying it’s going to be nuclear,” he said during his news-and-talk television show “The 700 Club” on the Christian Broadcasting Network. “The Lord didn’t say nuclear. But I do believe it will be something like that.”
Robertson said God told him during a recent prayer retreat that major cities and possibly millions of people will be affected by the attack, which should take place sometime after September.
Robertson said God also told him that the U.S. only feigns friendship with Israel and that U.S. policies are pushing Israel toward “national suicide.”
Robertson suggested in January 2006 that God punished then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with a stroke for ceding Israeli-controlled land to the Palestinians.
The broadcaster predicted in January 2004 that President Bush would easily win re-election. Bush won 51 percent of the vote that fall, beating Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.
In 2005, Robertson predicted that Bush would have victory after victory in his second term. He said Social Security reform proposals would be approved and Bush would nominate conservative judges to federal courts.
Lawmakers confirmed Bush’s 2005 nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. But the president’s Social Security initiative was stalled.
“I have a relatively good track record,” he said. “Sometimes I miss.”
In May, Robertson said God told him that storms and possibly a tsunami were to crash into America’s coastline in 2006. Even though the U.S. was not hit with a tsunami, Robertson on Tuesday cited last spring’s heavy rains and flooding in New England as partly fulfilling the prediction.
ex,
I was about to mount a search party for you.
It might be too early for the Letterman thing to show up anywhere but this looked new to me maybe to tie you over for a while http://tinyurl.com/yh53qx .
I should have video tape of Letterman and Comedy Central if things work out after tomorrow night.
I’m waxing my skis.
