Another weekend. Whoopie. The good news is that – around here, anyway – you can go to the post office and get a free screening for cervical, breast and colorectal cancers – with the best part being a free home stool test kit. Wow. No word on whether you need to go to the post office, or you can just make a deposit at your nearest mailbox, but you folks 50 years or older get a $5 gift certificate when your stool tests are completed. Wow, I can hardly wait. Should make hitting 50 more than worthwhile.

Alabama: 45th in helping kids, No. 1 in paying coach
MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) — The $4 million-a-year salary offered to the University of Alabama’s new football coach has some questioning the priorities in a poor state that often ranks near the bottom nationally for education.
Many Crimson Tide fans, hopeful for another championship title, cheered the hiring of Nick Saban, who took a cut from his $4.5 million salary to leave the Miami Dolphins. His compensation at Alabama, though, makes him the highest paid college coach in the country, well ahead of Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops, who makes about $3.4 million.
The reported salary is more than most CEOs make in a state that ranks 46th in the country in household income, with a median of $37,502. It also is nearly seven times what the university’s president, Robert E. Witt, earns, according to an executive-compensation database compiled by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
The hiring announced Wednesday also came on the same day Education Week magazine released a study showing Alabama ranked 45th nationally in giving public schoolchildren a chance for success.
“You couldn’t have a more stark picture of education priorities in the state of Alabama,” said Jim Carnes, communications director for Alabama Arise, a coalition that represents the poor. “We put that kind of money into a college football coach and leave our younger children at the mercy of inadequate schools and underpaid teachers. We strongly need a priority adjustment.”
University officials said the coach’s salary would be paid from the athletic department budget, which is supported by ticket sales and licensing agreements.
Deborah Lane, executive director of public relations at the university, said the program is “self-sustaining” and does not include taxpayer funds.
Athletic director Mal Moore said Saban, who won a national championship at LSU, was “a crucial hire for this program.”
Finis St. John IV, chairman of the trustees’ athletics committee, said the university president, Robert Witt, “thinks it’s important for student recruitment, for donor giving and for the momentum that he’s built trying to attract excellent students and make this the finest university he can.”
Faculty senate president, chemistry professor John Vincent, also supported the university’s decision.
“The money doesn’t come out of the academic side of the university,” he said. “Of course I would like to see these kinds of benefits available on the academic side, but this hiring offers much to the university.”
But Cleo Thomas, a former member of the board of trustees at Alabama, said spending millions on a football coach makes the public cynical, particularly when politicians talk about raising taxes for education.
“How do you make the claim for more public funds, which are scarce, if there are surpluses that permit $4 million coach’s salaries?” he asked.
State Rep. Richard Lindsey, D-Centre, chairman of a House committee that writes the education budget, agreed the lofty salary sends the wrong message. “I think we’ve let it get out of hand.”

fred, I brought up the admiral thing. I saw that the guy was a Naval flyer in Vietnam and some of the thinking is that we need him when we attack Iran (forgone conclusion?) which the dems can do nothing about if the insanity at the top decide to attack.
Morning, Druid!
couldn’t figure out why Bush would put an admiral in charge of ground forces so started nosing around the web.
this is where I find the info on Fallon:
A war against Iran may give the SBR a taste of what it was like to be the Japanese at the battle of Midway ( they lost three air craft carriers and had two seriously damaged) .. I would like to see GW, Putin and HU have a stare down that would so much fun,.
One of the things one has to remember is that the SBR has not fought a “real” war with a country with an army, navy and air force since Korea and that was not against a very sophisticated opponent. We came close to being chased into the sea there. Why Mayo didn’t chose to run us out of Asia is still unclear to me:eek: .
With Russia and China offering military equipment to Iran and since Iran is connected by land to both countries it would be most difficult to cut off the supply lines. Iran would make a nice test bed for both Russia and China to experiment with how to destroy the SBR militarily and then destroy us economically by cutting off the oil supply .:bf:

Yeah, in an effort to improve performance, I took that and a bunch of other stuff off. Not that it helped, but I wanted to remove any external stuff that might have had a possibility of causing trouble. You can accomplish the same thing by doing a google site search, anyway. Enter:

Hey guys, Good morning. :joe: I’m at work this morning and my boss was on the computer and all of a sudden all of her emails are on the desk top? Does anyone know anything about that? She’s got a message from a data execution prevention program saying that windows has closed the program and an application error that says “the instruction at 0x35f752c4 referenced memory at 0x35f752c4. The memory could not be “written” Click on ok to terminate the program (or) click on cancel to debug the program. She was using windows explorer.
The DEP in WinXP SP2 makes certain areas of memory protected and keep programs from executing code from these areas, in an effort to keep viruses (or other bad things) from doing bad stuff. Since emails mysteriously showing up on the desktop sounds a bit odd, I reckon I’d see if any new programs were recently installed, or any e-mails with attachments were received and open, or any cutsey online holiday cards were viewed. Might want to view what processes are running, and see if there’s anything suspicious, and you could also try opening a command window and running a netstat to see if there’s anything funky going on. And I’d do a full virus scan from safe mode (might want to consider unplugging the thing from the network first, too).
It’s possible that a legit program is trying to execute code from this area of memory, but if it’s a sudden development, then you’d have to wonder why.
Hmm, thanks PJ. I think maybe she somehow dumped her trash can onto the desktop. She’s a total PC ‘tard so she probably clicked on something unwittingly.
I’m not at work anymore so i can say now that my boss is one crazy bitch! Wow! I met a bunch of people from work at a bar yesterday and she had all the guys spankin her ass, it was hilarious:rofl2: She can be hard to be around but she can be fuckin’ hilarious too.

Israel has plans for nuclear strike on Iran -paper
LONDON (Reuters) – Israel has drawn up secret plans to destroy Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities with tactical nuclear weapons, the Sunday Times newspaper said.
Citing what it said were several Israeli military sources, the paper said two Israeli air force squadrons had been training to blow up an enrichment plant in Natanz using low-yield nuclear “bunker busters”.
Two other sites, a heavy water plant at Arak and a uranium conversion plant at Isfahan, would be targeted with conventional bombs, the Sunday Times said.
The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously last month to slap sanctions on Iran to try to stop uranium enrichment that Western powers fear could lead to making bombs. Tehran insists its plans are peaceful and says it will continue enrichment.
Israel has refused to rule out pre-emptive military action against Iran along the lines of its 1981 air strike against an atomic reactor in Iraq, though many analysts believe Iran’s nuclear facilities are too much for Israel to take on alone.

on the ride up, mr fk and I were talking about iran and the possibility of this surge thing being a way to call up more soldiers on the pretext for Iraq but really for Iran and how they desperately need a success right now so maybe that is what they’re planning on doing. wouldn’t put it past the sneaky bastids. Only thing is, that will likely strengthen terrorist groups around the globe and make al aqaeda look like a bunch of kindergarteners.

I think it’s working. I was gonna remove it, in case that was the performance problem. I don’t look at it much these days.
No, these kids are actually very smart. And they have young flexible brains, and are very shiny and good-looking. I’m none of that, sad to say. Just an old fart, looking for a place to hang out and kill the clock.
Im gonna have to read back…you mean I missed more geeky tech arguments…?
I just was saying that it came upon me like a blinding light what the difference is and why I choose PC’s…but that doesnt mean anything about Macs…one of my best friends here just switched over because she split with her husband and he was a PC guy and lorede over the computer…she wanted something that she could manage and that could be her’s…she is not a geek….But I warned her that I wouldnt be much help…but she had a great experience with Mac Tech…did I mention that they opened a mac store in the little Stamford Mall here…?
which stat program are you using these days?
I recommend Airport Express…You can use it in your hotel room and range around your room all you want and maybe even share the wireless with the roommate.
And extra special bonus it is an Apple product PJ:spank:
flexible smexible….youve flexed more than they can imagine flexing…youre just sad to be leaving home, family and dog….but you’ll be home before you know it! (I wish you would wing through here and see Marc with me next weekend….but you’ll be home by then, right?)
I want my Maron!
Hey PJ did Siggy have a nice birthday?
Well, the control Apple exerts over the hardware is a huge reason their OS has gained a reputation as being more stable. They are a hardware company. Windows and Linux don’t have that luxury. Also, M$ has had a thing about each OS being compatible with apps from previous versions. That caused a lot of instability, and a lot of why there were so many problems with Win 9598/ME. Not so with Apple. They just cut things off. You want the new OS? Gotta upgrade the apps, period. Works for them, but if M$ did it, they’d be vilified. But when you have a 10% market share that is mostly true believers, you can get away with it. Sometimes even incremental version updates have been incompatible with hardware/software.
Or a few hotties —
From the source, “I’ve been whoring around a bit, in the dark. :hot: :hubba: 😎

Ha, I can get a low-power travel WiFi router pretty cheap, or just use my Linksys with the non-stock firmware (it runs on Linux), and dial down the power to whatever works. Problem is if the hotel doesn’t like rogue WiFi AP’s. I have any number of really long Cat 5 cables to choose from, though.
Siggy had a nice b’day, but didn’t get to go anywhere today. Have to take him out tomorrow.
Thanks for the update Druid…:knit2:

pj, I have always been a Jeff Garcia fan. He’s arrogant! For some unexplainable reason other than the cold, I am wearing my old 49ers sweatshirt today.
And sorry, pj but no one could ever top the original Producers although I wish I had seen the play. Or the original In-Laws.
Dammit, 666, Carol Doda? Where is that emo? The purrfect 44! I had a friend who once got a boob job. She was one of the most gorgeous and beautiful people I ever knew as she was. I never understood. I guess it was something about the men she wanted to attract. I never got that either.
Druid, do I have to wake you up?:menorah::cake: Is it too early?
We need an apple emo with a candle in it. Watch for a Jobs rollout or indictment this week.
Say g’night, Gracie!
