Well, here I am at the Mayflower in DC. Didn’t get much sleep last night – some redneck-sounding hick was pounding on a door down the hall, hollerin’ “Laura, honey, please, let me in baby! You know that bitch Condi don’t mean nothin’ to me.” When I went out to see what the hell was going on, two guys wearing sunglasses (at two o’clock in the morning; what up with that?) and earpieces told me to get the hell back in my room. Oh well, I should be able to sleep through all the speechifyin’ today.
In the meantime, join me in wishing a happy birthday to Tricky Dicky Nixon, Gypsy Rose Lee, Les Paul, Bart Starr, Bob Denver, Joan Baez, Jimmy Page, and Dave Matthews. Also, for those of you in Connecticut, Happy Ratification Day.
Time to go see if anybody will give me a job, I guess. See ya

Looks like the blog was AFU yesterday. Bummer. Hopefully things will be better today. See y’all later.
Good morning everybody, let us not discuss football today. :knit2:
I received this week’s edition of the Late Show Newsletter yesterday afternoon, and it confirms that Marc is scheduled to appear on Wednesday, not Thursday. Peter O’Toole will be the first guest. I was going to post this on the blog, but it was… you know. Kinda like Ohio State last night.
But let us not discuss football. :knit2:
:love:We had a RAGING Granny sighting :yippee: 😎

Morning :joe:
jeepers creepers it was a blogless day yesterday. glad there was a granny sighting, though. I figure Siggy was ticked off at Pj’s leaving again (last time PJ left for a very long time) and he sabotaged the blog to force PJ back home.
More Farm News: Today, Thadeus, the one-eyed miniature horse who I reported on a while back, is being driven to Auburn Vet school to have his eye socket cleaned out and stitched closed. It is pretty gross to look at right now.
The tornado turned out to be an F2 and looking at the damage, we knew it was pretty darn strong.
Nightly News last night did an addition to the weather story I told you about on Saturday (the story was on Friday) – they evidently had received quite a few comments and so their science guy (Bazell) did a connection to global warming. I think that’s cool they responded and corrected.
if you want to see pictures of the tornado damage, they are here. The goats we evacuated live across the street (a dirt road, actually) from the house blown apart in the second picture.
King Kong:wink:, 😎 ….. Yesterday it was off and on Cold Rain, not like Fred’s :cold:or ArtNorton’s ::cold: eek:
But super :omg::eek: 8 mansions burned in Malibu area in Southern California. Hubby said extremely dry with no help from weather :hot:
The Redwoods I planted have new sprouts (since around Winter Soltice:nod::wink::cool: — real strong sprouts)
From the seeds (I have grown redwoods before) I will be making as meditation practice and the listening to the trees and “the spirits within the trees” — Bonsai.
How Are You?
a.i.v.
A monolithic dome would have a much better chance of surviving a tornado than any frame structure.
Farmerkat — WOW :paranoid: WOW :yippee: for you and yours.
WOW.
Farmerkat beats The Snow :slap: (although both are :omg:)
As the Goblin King says, “L A U G H :!:”
a.i.v.
The weather has been pretty good for the last two days .. Not supposed to snow again until Thursday then it is not supposed to be much of a storm.
Do they typically have tornadoes in Georga ??
Tornados, yes. Tornados in January, no.
“the weather has been pretty good the last two days”
Only if you don’t consider 90 mph ground blizzards ‘not weather’.
115mph winds clocked 2 mi SE of Eldorado Springs :omg:
Did Longmont escape the wind?
I think I would much rather have snow than a tornado.. tornadoes are very destructive snow is more of a nusance
The wind was blowing but the snow had pretty much had a crust form on the top of it so it was just rather chilly rather than blizzardly
bazell mentioned your colorado snows in the weather story last night – their strength may be caused by global warming. :billcat:
dome houses… i’d want sky lights all over for star gazing.
druid, hope your hubby isn’t near the fires. Calif headed for universal health care. Awnald has become a democrat!
chilling morn here – 29… cold walk ahead!
ciao!
Oh my god Kat!! Those Crumptons are sure lucky…was that really close to you?…
I suppose that there is no way to know whats gonna happen next.
We’ve had some bad wind storms in the past few years and that is something that really scares me what with all these trees that Hi planted too close to the house a million years ago…I keep having more taken down, everytime I can justify it or add it on to somehting else (like, if he can get to the rest of the pathway ever, he will also take 3 huge ash trees that are half dead) But, hell, trees are nothing commpared ot the roof of your house coming off!
I wonder if Im any safer being in a stucco and stone structure…probably not….
I hope thatyoure keeping your news on all the time….
In colorado I suppose that youse out there must be constantly on the emergency network for a big whats next!!
I am warily moving ahead…I worry more when things are too “nice”…though this is not nice, its scary….really warm and humid and the ground is so muddy and soaked…foggy….
I hope we’re not approaching a tipping point….
Be careful out there!
they’re a mile as the crow flies. guess their house blew apart because of the pressure. they say you should open windows when there is a tornado warning. it rains in to the house, though. we sat on our front porch listening for it as the sat teevee goes out in heavy rain.
hopefully the blog will cooperate today.
Kat- If I can swing building a house I want it to be completely solar/wind/whatever works around here…They opened an alternative energy store in Norwalk, which is the next town over, and I want to go and get them to price up something for this little cottage too…
The first oil bill was really low, but I dont like having to burn oil or anything….
My friends got a wood stove because they just cant afford oil anymore….but isnt it not so great to completely heat your house with wood?
what kind of damage could that do to the enviornment if everyone was using that for heat rather than the few who do it for how pretty it is or whatever….
In a tornado it is the pressure change that most often causes structural failure.. I have seen concrete buildings that had those prestressed concrete I beams for roofs torn apart In a tornado the best thing to do is to open all the doors and windows and then go hide in the down stairs bathroom
build a house off the grid is my dream! :gate:
dorks are chomping at the bit …gotta go. Murrow is a total banana today. I start taking him to doggie school this week…and not a moment too soon. naughty doggie :pup:
Solar augmented hot water heating coupled with passive solar is probably the best but to keep the energy requirements down you should have it set up in zones so you only heat the room(s) you are in at the time.
Morning, all.
Over the weekend, I spilled water on my laptop. Turns out this is not a good thing. The screen will not brighten enough for me to see it, although the rest of the computer seems to function OK. Therefore it’s going for a trip back to Compaq where, hopefully, they will fix it without losing everything that’s on the computer which is of course not backed up.
The parrots in Red Hook seem to be building a second nest. :parrot:.
Although I haven’t seen the birds lately.
I read, yesterday, that the shelters have an influx of kittens because the warm winter seems to be facilitating the birth of more feral cats.
:cat::cat::cat:
And the preznit, Culture of Life George himself, has decided to send more human targets to Iraq, a move with which even Ollie North disagrees .

Melina, :yinyang: Tree Story. We just moved (me, basicly) from mountains. The old trees around the old house were exquisite. A minor boon meant trimming trees, first with an arborist suggestions.
We just had gotten this place with these wonderful Monterey Pines. He adivsed in California all the way and including Washington 95% of property damage was due to Monterey Pines and that we had probly the oldest here. I gave the final okay, although I was in shock 😯 to take down, but I needed Redwoods, as soon as he was done.
After he cut down to ground the front two I told them to leave the “stub”, which is now a meditation () and :pent: Druid Alter. They were 40 years, thus already Living just to Die — on the side of Death:reaper:..
I should have demanded my husband and arborist to leave one in back … but they said it could break fence — and Danu could get out — but I did get a lil bit out of 😯 to say STOP, regarding my meditation alter. :hot: Whew.
Basically, for house and home and liability and The Future, “clear” if the trees have span of 50 ish years.
You might want to do what there was no time for me to do: Plant seeds to start growing and when the young ones have grown, cut down trees. PLANT LESS. (but any loss of trees = :omg: )
a.i.v.
sblueheron, :yippee: 😉 , but don’t you have a sweet, new meow to keep you warm? :pirate: 😎 :peace:
Fred- where’s the sun ❓ ❗
Must have sun today :omg:
90 mph winds= sun
no wind=no sun ❓ :eek::no:
Starting Thursday going into Saturday- 6-12″ in the city, more in the foothills. “high” of 0 saturday w/ low of -12 :shock:
FKat- I don’t doubt global warming but I lived in Boulder in the early eighties and from Feb thru April we’d frequently have gusts of 90 mph.One gust blew over about a mile of huge power lines along a major street in near the university :billcat:
But the accumulation plus wind we’ve had this winter………,
never seen anything like it :omg:
Democrats Aim Raise for Northern Marianas but Not Samoa
After years of protection from the likes of Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff, employers on the Northern Mariana Islands would finally have to pay workers the federal minimum wage under legislation before the House tomorrow.
But Republican leadership aides accused the Democrats of using a double standard by imposing the higher minimum wage on a government with a Republican representative to the United States while continuing to exempt a territory with a Democratic delegate. American Samoa and the tuna industry that dominates its economy would remain free to pay wages that are less than half the bill’s mandatory minimum.
But Samoa has escaped such notoriety, and its low-wage canneries have a protector of a different political stripe, Democratic delegate Eni F.H. Faleomavaega, whose campaign coffers have been well stocked by the tuna industry that virtually runs his island’s economy..
The wage bill coming to a vote would raise the federal minimum from $5.15 an hour to $7.25 over two years, the first such increase since 1997. The 10-year stretch between wage increases is the longest since the mandatory minimum was created, and passage is expected to be overwhelming.

Sorry to be so irrelevant- just clearing the debris in my mind before I got to sleep:oops::sheep::sheep::sheep:
So what are we supposed to do about this globalization business.. If we raise wages in the SBR companies take jobs overseas. Even in states with higher minimum wages employers take jobs to states with lower minimum wages . If workers organize employers take jobs to right to work states .. No one ever uses the word Tariff any more ..and the polititians seem clueless ..
maybe one could encourage China to use rich CEOs as slave labor :gate::omg::jason::jason::fist:
How bout declaring any american corporation who’ve taken their headquarters to the Bahama’s (in name only) declared “enemy combatants” and and seizing their assets?:slap: mwhu-ha-ha:nod:

PLANET BUSH correspondent Lawton Smalls was on The Sam Seder Show yesterday. It was good to hear him, but it was wrong wrong wrong.
our local paper is full of how foks prayed and God saved them during the tornado…if god is so wonderful why did HE (hehehe) send the tornado to destroy their homes in the first place?
(art, that emo doesn’t behave for me either, btw)
what’s the deal with tuna and Samoa, i wonder….
artnorton, The Winds. Now that is why we had to remove our trees — they are past their prime, and the winds blew down a huge limb last year. (If it hit us = too traumatic to think about.) 95% of property damage were caused by them here. Then found out the trees caused the damage in the Pacific West Coast, all the way including Washington. The Winds will only get worse. The Winds so far this year, have been horrid, which makes me sadly glad to have taken down the dying ones, which were all 😥 … It will change Ph regarding soil, thus my Art of this certain mushroom will forever change. I hadn’t known that. Maybe I can do Bonsais in the back and try to get back those mushrooms. (Well, I have tons of sketches , WHICH IS BETTER THAN NOT — to you Sue P. I still would be so haunted :reaper: = The Death Card; thus, ultimate change was due.)

Again you are proving ” You’re A Better Man (Woman) Than I, Gunga Din.”
But I will talk to you after a Major Quake. 🙄

San Francisco tops U.S. drug-use list
By UPI
Jan 9, 2007, 9:16 GMT
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, United States (UPI) — A new study says the San Francisco area has a higher percentage of regular drug users than any other major metropolitan area in the United States.
The study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found nearly 13 percent of San Francisco residents admit to using some type of illicit drug, including marijuana, cocaine or heroin, in the preceding month.
USA Today said Monday that according to data from the National Surveys on Drug Use and Health in 2002-2005, the national average is 8.1 percent.
Other metropolitan areas with higher than the national average drug-abuse rates included Seattle, 9.6 percent; Detroit, 9.5; Philadelphia, 9.1 and Boston, 8.5. Cities with the lowest admitted drug use were Houston at 6.2 percent and Washington, Dallas and Riverside/San Bernardino, Calif., all at 6.5 percent.
Alice Gleghorn of San Francisco`s Department of Public Health, told USA Today: ‘The fact that state law allows the use of medical marijuana and that we have a population with a high rate of AIDS that might need to use medical marijuana may contribute to the rates. We do have a cultural regional norm with regard to medical-marijuana use.’

Hey, if anyone else was listening to Sen. Dead Air this afternoon and heard Melanie Sloan talking about the picture of Chimpy with Jack Abramoff, here it is:
http://tinyurl.com/v9xln
Included on the CREW blog is a lively discussion of whether or not the picture was Photoshopped. According to Melanie on Al’s show today, the White House is not attempting to claim that it was.
The main bone of contention among the bloggers seems to be Abramoff’s somewhat diminutive size, as the photo was taken three years ago when he was of somewhat less Roveian proportions than he is now.
Hey PJ, is Signatures still open? Maybe you can pay them a visit.

Chicken and Ham both have to be cooked at above 140 degrees F to kill any lingering bacteria .. I think that has been true since about 2000 BC
Nah, the Fahrenheit scale wasn’t even invented until, like 1714.

When you import most of the veggies in the winter time you have no control over the conditions in which they are grown or what they might be using as fertilizer ( might give the term organic a new meaning)
From Huffpo:
It may feel like looking into the mirror for Bill O’Reilly and
Stephen Colbert next week. The Fox News Channel host and Colbert, who has essentially based his comic character every evening on Comedy Central on him, will trade appearances on each other’s programs Jan. 18.
“I’m really looking forward to speaking to a man who owes his entire career to me,” O’Reilly said.
On “The Colbert Report,” Colbert portrays a self-involved talk-show host who has tried to bring “truthiness” to the world. His character owes an obvious debt to O’Reilly, who holds court in the “no-spin zone” each evening.
On “The O’Reilly Factor,” O’Reilly portrays a … um, he hosts the top-rated program in cable news.
“I look forward to the evening,” Colbert said. “It is an honor to speak face-to-face with a broadcasting legend, and I feel the same way about Mr. O’Reilly.”
Oliely a legend :barf::barf::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:
I would rather think of the people at FAUX news as history rather than legend:gate::omg::jason::jason::fist:

OMG, downtown SF is crawling with pod people here for macworld and possible Steve Jobs sightings. They are definitely are sucking up a lot our attitude and arrogance.
BTW the drug survey had Washington, DC at the bottom of the list. I guess they are really missing Rehnquist back there. GWB must be survey exempt.
I love steven colbert!…look at what he said Fred!
Hes not calling O’Lielly a legend…But anyway, he is a legend of misinformation. These guys will go down in history as sorta the National Enquirer on TV….No one in the future will look back on them a journalists. They are actors in the manipulation of the American people, and that is more and more apparent….
I hope to god that history is clear about that….If Will or I have anything to say about it, it will.
Did you hear that Steve JObs called starbucks and ordered 14,000 lattes…as a prank…? I dont knwo if its true but Keith said so…so it must be true…he was one of the worst people

It is true. Steve is a regular Jerky Boy. I am so glad I resisted the temptation to attend the event. If Steve is really as blue as some like to think, he may be looking at some quality Martha Stewart-style time after the DOJ/SEC gets done with him.
I would love to be at the CSE….the apple thing, not so much….
All the tech podcasts are posting overtime with daily updates from the things and they have so much fun stuff
Dru – that tiny computer was on Woot because its not so hot…the NEW one unveiled at the show is excellent…fits in the jacket pocket or purse and has a connection like the EVDO Palm phone I use …so has internet access anywhere there is cell phone. and alot more disc space and ram power!
I wa sjust listening to one of leo laporte’s specials on this that had a Digg guy and a bunch of others…sorta half and hald Apple show and CSE….very cool how split they are….how pissed the apple folks are about Vista putting in a “tilt” thing, where if you try to copy an encoded DVD it shuts your machine down and you have to reboot….horrible!
