White Dwarf Stars
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_734.htm
Pushing the limits of its powerful vision, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope uncovered the oldest burned-out stars in our Milky Way Galaxy. These extremely old, dim “clockwork stars” provide a completely independent reading on the age of the universe.

Logic Puzzles
Bulbs
This is one of my favorite logic puzzles.
Imagine you are in a room with 3 switches. In an adjacent room there are 3 bulbs (all are off at the moment), each switch belongs to one bulb. It is impossible to see from one room to another. How can you find out which switch belongs to which bulb, if you may enter the room with the bulbs only once?
…and I am not the one speaking. 😉

Dazzling Dunes
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_733.html
As NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity creeps farther into “Endurance Crater,” the dune field on the crater floor appears even more dramatic. This false-color image taken by the rover’s panoramic camera shows that the dune crests have accumulated more dust than the flanks of the dunes and the flat surfaces between them. Also evident is a “blue” tint on the flat surfaces as compared to the dune flanks. This results from the presence of the hematite-containing spherules, or “blueberries”, that accumulate on the flat surfaces.
Sinuous tendrils of sand less than 1 meter (3.3 feet) high extend from the main dune field toward the rover. Scientists hope to send the rover down to one of these tendrils in an effort to learn more about the characteristics of the dunes. Dunes are a common feature across the surface of Mars, and knowledge gleaned from investigating the Endurance dunes may apply to similar dunes elsewhere.
Before the rover heads down to the dunes, rover drivers must first establish whether the slippery slope that leads to them is firm enough to ensure a successful drive back out of the crater. Otherwise, such hazards might make the dune field a true sand trap.

There is most likely a protest somewhere in your area. Consider attending. We need to turn out in force. THIS IDIOT MUST BE STOPPED BEFORE MORE SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS DIE IN A BULLSHIT WAR.

FK, Weird on the Condi thing. Condi was just on with Matte-hair Lauer on The Today Show and this topic was not brought up. Or I wasn’t paying attention, which is not hard to do with her talking.
Ever notice that during story segment transitions, Matt has this irritating habit of saying “Nallright” ??? Like he is chewing on his words?

Greetings and good morning from the left coast, all. Is there a clip somewhere of Maron on Letterman last night, for those of us who missed it?

Hello wv, thanks for considering the search party! I often have long gaps of time til I can get here again, because I’m either too busy at work or too tired/busy catching up on my news reading at the home computer. Right now I’m at about minute 43 of last night’s Malloy show, will go to that link you posted afterwards.
Where you going skiing? Downhill or x-country?

“waxing the skis” is a double entendre?? I was never a downhill skiier, but I never caught on to this.
I spoke with all the agency reps from agencies that I would consider working for, and there was really nothing else to stick around for, so instead of leaving in the evening, I left in the morning, and was home fairly early. Lots of jobs that sound interesting, but of course they were all in DC, except for the Railroad Retirement guy, who was from Chicago, and seemed like a nice guy.
Gotta love the GPS. Never even consulted a map – just put the address in and went where it told me to go.
Got about five or six inches of snow here, so Siggy got to go to the park and run around in it today (first time he’s been out since Sunday, so he had a lot of energy to burn off). There aren’t many things I enjoy as much as watching him hope around in the snow. To watch another creature experience complete, unfettered joy works wonders for me. I also got to shovel the driveway, which I rather enjoy (though it was warm and sunny today, so there wasn’t a whole lot to shovel by the time I got to it). Of course, it’s supposed to be 48 and rainy tomorrow, so it’ll probably all be gone again.
Goddamn TV guide shows Marc on Letterman tonight, instead of last night, so the ReplayTV didn’t record it. Don’t they replay those shows at some point, late, late night? Or is that another show?
Ohh. Duh. I’m stuck in a windowless cubicle, but I do have to venture out to the post office today, and then downtown for the emergency protest. Got the fleece socks, boots, gloves, hat and scarf, you bet! And the long coat, of course.

Wagstaff’s Receptionist: The Dean is furious! He’s waxing wroth!
Professor Wagstaff: Is Roth out there, too? Tell Roth to wax the Dean for awhile.

Professor Wagstaff: Guess that’s bad, huh?

Hey, how about that? Two of the people shown occupying Matsui’s office (looks more like a friendly conference in the photo) are two of our California Peace and Freedom Party officers, John Reiger and CT Weber. Yes! :fist:
SeanMS,
I know what you mean. I got it. I am also thinking of going to the street though I probably can’t. I am more likely going to spend some time calling Congressional offices and registering thoughts (never forgetting New Orleans!) to try to do some waxing or fluffing or whatever they are calling it now to try to get some backbone over there.
This twerp is on the ropes and I am more fearful of that than when he was doing his so-called ‘manly’ texan strut. At least Nixon was intelligent and had a modicum of shame. (Heh-heh, he said modicum).
Wv, phone calls are good too. I’m too incoherent with rage to be any good on the phone right now, I doubt saying Fuck Bush and his enablers and screaming into the phone is much needed right now, so I’ll bundle up and go to whatever march and/or rally is happening by 6pm at Powell and Market or Montgomery and Market. Code Pink is doing some kind of youtube action at the Montgomery Street BART station, but for me the incoherence factor weighs heavy, or my tendency to drone on and not get to the point.
Anyway, KPFA’s morning show has a list of Bay Area actions posted, supposed to be updated through the day:
http://kpfa.org/events/2007-01-11-events.php
excerpt:
In San Francisco, there’s a rally at noon at city hall. World Can’t Wait is organizing a demonstration at San Francisco’s military recruiting center at 670 Davis St. starting at 3:PM. The Answer Coalition is organizing an emergency protest at Powell and Market streets starting at 5 p.m. And code pink women for peace is organizing a “You TUBE” action at the Montgomery St. Bart Station starting at 6 p.m. as part of a coordinated national action, participants will be sending personal photos and video appeals to their congressional representatives.
Hartmann had some link this morning for all of today’s actions nationwide but I cannot find it right now. I will keep looking and put up if I find it in case anyone else is interested in futile and yet somehow satisfying gestures to express their disgust and anger towards this lunacy.
Don’t think for a second that what has been going on this week is not a pre-emptive strike against the shift in power in this country as much as the war on on Iraq/Iran/terrorism/whatever works. We should deeply fear the desperation.

seanie, cut it out…youre not gonna shoot anyone, and wasting your time on that is not gonna help anyone.
Mom said that CSPAN 3 had on hearings with Nancy Pelosi vs. Condi Rice and that they were both dripping with hatred….
This is what we’ve been waiting for…maybe not all out anarchy, but lets get stuff on the record and unravel how bad this really is…and then try to sort out fixing it….
Give them a minute to start things moving.
hearings today were great and people are seeing the truth…even the top repug supporters (voinovitch!!) are falling away….
I just dont see them getting this done…and Bush is gonna take a hard fall.
I hope there are protests, but we know that this administration doesnt care if 200,000 people march right past them…they have a vision and they wear blinders….
The great thing is that it seems like the government is staniding up to this gang of thugss
Check out Sen Smith( R-ORE)…he says that its not just bad its CRIMINAL!!
Thats a republican saying that!
Hey guys…great Woot today…I cant say how much I love my little robots that wash my floors and vacume. The deal is only $29 cheaper than iRobot’s site (free shipping there too)…and I guess I like the fancier models…but this dirt dog pis for the garage and will pick up bolts and stuff like that…..they work really great….but I use the scheduler with a pet brush kit.
iRobot. They should paint it white – it would instantly be called stylish, innovative, and “just plain cool,” and sell millions. Plus, they could jack up the price.
what? i just shot like a hundred fascists!
Isn’t it lovely to watch the Repigs bailing on Chimpy, one by one? And some of them are names you wouldn’t expect to hear. Brownback. Coleman. Voinovich.
Pretty soon, Chimpy will have no one to play with but his annoying friend Little Joey Loserman. Maybe Uncle Dick will let the two of them torture a few prisoners to cheer themselves up.
I’m hoping the PBS News Hour has some footage of Condi vs. Nancy. Sucks not having CSpan 3. 🙂
Forget about Trump and Rosie, this is where the real slapfight is. Except that Condi’s shoes are too expensive to throw.

The scary part is that since the speech was obviously pre-recorded, they had a chance to re-shoot it without Bush having such a look of fear in his eyes. Maybe the version that aired was the most usable take.
Time for this cowboy to ride off into the sunset. But first, a little time in the hoosegow. Actually, a LOT of time. And his beefy buddies Dick and Karl, too.

Does anyone have a clip of Letterman available??
So, I just went over to Marcs’ site and all he has are Conan appearances. He’s been on Letterman more than once? Right?
Conan actually talks to Marc on the couch. Does David only allow him to do the standup routine? I bet that’s why Marc doesn’t post those videos. Potential for too much of the same routine.
You mean, Letterman doesn’t want to talk to Marc? 🙁
