Denver labor splits over Democrats plan to use non-union convention center
There is tension in the air between Democrats and organized labor in Denver. The city will be the site of the 2008 Democratic National Convention and the party plans to host the convention at the non-union Pepsi Center. Another major issue for organized labor is that the convention center is also owned by Stan Kroenke – husband of Wal-Mart heir Ann Walton. While the Colorado AFL-CIO has expressed support for the Democrats using the non-union space and the Pepsi Center has expressed it would allow current workers managed by Rhino Staging be replaced with union workers. When the McNichols Center was replaced by the Pepsi Center in 1999, it cost nearly 300 union members their jobs. The major opposition comes from Jim Taylor, President of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees local 7. While Taylor has yet to make any public positions – reportedly not returning calls from U.S. Senator Ken Salazar and Denver City Councilwoman Elbra Wedgeworth – he has so far not signed a pledge not to strike during the convention. When it was first learned that Denver was in consideration, Taylor has expressed he saw it as an opportunity to put leverage on the facility to organize its current workers. Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean is optimistic that an agreement will be reached.

Fred, meant to type you…the foot cramps (and leg cramps) at night are oftentimes just a magnesium deficiency. Take magnesium before you go to bed. I have to take it every night for that and it works for me. I take one form for cardiac health, but really, any good quality one should work. Hope that helps.

I have a PCMCIA WIFI card in the laptop at work.. I don’t know if the routers can be used to receive another WIFI network ?? Maybe a repeater can ??

I haven’t seen any desktop boxes to specifically receive WIFI but the system is bi directional so a router should work as a receiver too but how do you tell the router what network to connect too ??. Usually they originate the network , I think they assume if your computer has a network card in it it can have a WIFI card as well.:tongue::yawn:
WIFI and cell connections are different beasts . When you use WIFI it is just wireless networking operating at a power level such that it works over a range of several hundred feet. The cell phone internet connections are just a really poor dial up connection. Some how you either have dedicated cell channels or have to dial up your ISP. Cell phone internet connections seldom get over 2400 baud even if they advertise a higher rate . They suck ..

Does anyone know of a good program or way to archive papers scanned into a database…such as scripts? I want to scan these things into a database and have them available online somehow so that they can be read and paged through…like a library…
Maybe save them as acrobat write only files?….

Hey Sean, not sure what you want to do, but if you get a high-speed wireless card for your laptop (not 802.11), you should be able to set up your laptop as a wireless bridge (in other words, you connect to the Internet via your wireless provider, and then set up an ad-hoc connection allowing the XBox to connect via the laptop (either Ethernet cable or WiFi – if they do that – should work).

Yeah, I dunno WTF the problem is. Trying to create what they call “addon” domains so I can move my other stuff over here, but it keeps having problems. I don’t know if that’s a cause or a symptom. Very frustrating. The haven’t even assigned my support ticket, and I was on a live chat when it came back up again, and the guy said “ok, thanks” and split before I had a chance to follow up.

Kristapea, I so envy that fact that you HAVE your computer. Mine is in the bowels of HP. Their website says they want to talk to us and that the computer has not been shipped back but when we call they say they don’t want to talk to us and the computer is to arrive today….so far, no computer. 😡
Once upon a time when you bought an HP laptop it was manufactured in Fort Collins . The computer parts were stocked in Fort Collins, If you returned it for repair the computer was repaired in Fort Collins and the returns department was across the isle from the shipping dept ..But hey they got your money so what the H* do they care :crap::rant1:

Air America close to sealing the deal
Air America Radio’s parent company may have found a new owner, and will likely make an announcement as early as today, according to Reuters and the Wall Street Journal.
The consortium of investors will be led by the Richard French family of Westchester County, NY, which owns New York City-area television concern WRNN. The group is close to signing a deal to purchase the assets of Piquant LLC, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York in October, according to people familiar with the situation. An agreement could be announced as early as today, these people said. Any agreement would need to be approved by the bankruptcy court. If the deal doesn’t go through, it increases the likelihood that Piquant could face imminent liquidation.
If the acquisition does go through, it could lead to several programming changes at the liberal talk-radio network. Richard French, Jr., son of WRNN’s owner, will likely get his own show in prime time on Air America. Richard French, formerly a New York State Democratic Party official, already has a nightly show on WRNN, “Richard French Live,†where he has hosted guests including Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). Another on-air addition could include the return of former Air America morning host Marc Maron, who has been in talks with the French family.

Alright, finally got through to someone who claims to know about my computer. He said that the mother board needs replacement but that they will not have the new mother board until the 16 of February-and this is for a machine that is still in waranty.
I have an older laptop but I’m having trouble with the wireless connection. It is fine if I’m sitting in the room with the router(?) but when I go downstairs it does not get a signal. Could it be the tin ceilings? The HP never had that problem.

I put up a youtube clip of Jr’s show…he is not bad and Ill take him over just about anyone but Sam…as long as Maron is in the deal.
At least they have money.
Even if their station is mostly home shopping they use that as a platform for the 2 hours of liberal talk….the thing I like is that they seem interested in interactive broadcasting….how great a following you get with that interaction….more on that later….I don’t think that what I put up on RIPCoco is groundbreaking but you can see the kid there.

UN nuclear watchdog disputes claim that Iran barred weapons inspectors
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is disputing claims that Iran has barred 38 nuclear inspectors from visiting the country, RAW STORY can reveal.
A Reuters report earlier today — followed up by a report from AP — sent shockwaves through the international community airing allegations that Iran had kicked out inspectors of the U.N. atomic watchdog organization. Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki posited that Iran had barred 38 inspectors with the U.N. nuclear watchdog.
This, however, does not align with comments from the IAEA themselves. Shockingly, no comment from the agency appeared in either Reuters or AP’s article.

meringue tips: make sure there are absolutely no yolks in with the egg whites
egg whites should be warmed (I swirl them over a gas flame in my metal mixing bowl). warm egg whites beat to a greater volume (make sure they are at least room temp). i also use cream of tarter (like 1/2 tsp for 6 whites), to help keep the egg whites stiff. Add sugar slowly. Do not over beat (they’ll look flaky.) Oh, and I add the cream of tarter at the beginning and don’t start adding sugar until they move from foamy to peaky. hope that helps!

On Friday, Jan. 19, after years of litigation, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit finally upheld a 1949 Texas law banning the sale of horsemeat for human consumption. The Humane Society of the United States had filed an amicus brief in the case in March 2006, arguing in favor of the state law banning horse slaughter. Two of the three existing horse slaughter facilities in the United States are located in Texas, and as soon as the ruling goes into effect, Illinois will stand alone as the last state where American horses are slaughtered for foreign diners.
Last week, U.S. Reps. Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Ed Whitfield (R-KY), John Spratt (D-SC), and Nick Rahall (D-WV), and U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and John Ensign (R-NV) introduced H.R. 503/S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This legislation would ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop the export of horses for slaughter across our borders.

yia yia is Greek for Grandmother. Greeks make the best rice pudding and my Greek Grandmother from the “old country” made the best of the best. I got the closest to it yesterday because my mom just gave me my yia yia’s cookbook (it’s in English)!
hmm, Galatobouriko. I could try that. was planning on trying koulourakia and kourabiethes next. Can’t find any that taste as good as hers were. They’re usually too dry. Spanakopita is my mom’s specialty, so I’m learning that from her. learned stuffed grape leaves from yia yia, and I’m pretty proud of those. Is it dinner time yet?
Kat, that’s what I was guessing. I spent 3 months in Greece years ago, mostly in southern Crete. We usually just went into a taverna or restaurant, especially at the beginning, and they would take us back into the kitchen and show us what they were serving since we only spoke English. Toward the end, I learned a little Greek and had a local friend who helped explain it to me. It’s great that you have that cookbook.
Crete is where my grandfather’s family is from but I’ve haven’t been there yet (I think they fled the Turks).

Thanks for the great news about AAR and Marc! You know what’s so cool? The new owners are in the Hudson Valley, which is already the new New York heart of great music with WXPK (107.1 FM) — the ONLY music station other than WFUV worth listening to. Gawd, if they get a frequency in Westchester, I’ll be able to hear it loud and clear.

I am not sure what your primary delivery system is for AAR/ProgTalkRadio but if you have a moment if you are listening over the radio waves…
It sounds like there is a lot of hat in hand stuff going on these days trying to gin up ad revenue. I understand the economics involved but are you hearing a lot of that on local over the air b’casters? I really think that it is a setup to toss progressive talk for being unprofitable. Funny how it is coming up right now. The guy running our local SF station has just started a campaign like that and I suspect his motives. That would be a coup, progtalk can’t make it in San Francisco. No one will ever look into any underlying mismanagement/sabotage.
