Man, got a two page paper (single spaced, too – the bastid) to pull out of my butt by tomorrow. On the bright side, my professor for my “capstone” course project – the equivalent of a master’s thesis – is OK with my project idea. On the not so bright side, I have no freakin’ clue how the hell to do it. Guess I’ll have to go with my standard modus operandi – smile and nod and say OK a lot. Kinda like being married.

It’s an understatement that Malloy teased about some AAR talent coming to Nova M. He practically guaranteed it. Said that there is going to Major structural changes at AAR and almost let the cat out of the bag about who’s coming to Nova. :dancers:
I think Nova’s got a good buisness model idea going (the Founders Club) and I’m transparently making a cheap plug here for Nova. There’s even going to be a $10,000 drawing from the first 5000 who sign up (so say’s Malloy).
Hell, I don’t care if they give away toasters. As long as the message is getting out. Maybe even :fire: is on the horizon ❓ :yippee:

NY Times: Bush signs landmark executive order increasing power over federal agencies
President George W. Bush has given his administration a boost in how the government regulates key issues such as civil rights and the environment, RAW STORY has learned The New York Times will report on its Tuesday front page.
The President “signed a directive that gives the White House much greater control over the rules that the federal government develops to regulate public health, safety,” privacy and other issues, writes Robert Pear for the Times.

Web video ‘exposes’ the ‘Real McCain’
A new project of producer/director Robert Greenwald’s Brave New Films production company aims to “expose” the “real McCain.”
The nearly three minute long video, which is being distributed by Democracy For America, a grassroots political organization founded by DNC chairman Howard Dean, juxtaposes “conflicting” statements made by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on a range of issues, including the war in Iraq, the Confederate flag, the religious right, and gay marriage
Regarding the Iraq War, McCain is shown saying “The success will be fairly easy” and “I believe that we can win an overwhelming victory in a very short period of time.” But, moments later, McCain is shown contradicting himself, saying, “I knew it was probably gonna be long and hard and tough and those that voted for it and thought that somehow it was going to some kind of an easy task then I’m sorry they were mistaken. Maybe they didn’t know what they were voting for.”

Prehistoric ‘Hobbit’ Was Definitely New Species
On the remote island of Flores, in what is now Indonesia, scientists in 2003 made a remarkable discovery — the remains of a pre-human being, only about three feet tall, who lived and thrived there until about 12,000 years ago.
The skeleton was different enough from other fossils that scientists said it was a previously undiscovered species, separate from those that led to modern human beings. They called it Homo floresiensis, though everyone quickly nicknamed it the “hobbit.”

I don’t know about Nova M radio .. Maybe Newcomb ( Newcrum) and Malloy balance out the programming They could certainly use a different morning drive time host .. Newcrum is about as liberal as Schultz is .. :fustrate: :fustrate: :paranoid:
So I received an e-mail from AAR yesterday. They want me to re-up for another year of premium. Your timing is interesting, folks.
You want my money? Two words. MARC MARON. And don’t tell me you can’t afford him. Franken leaving puts you well under the salary cap, even if you gave Sen. Dead Air a parachute.
In the immortal words of Stan Lee, ’nuff said.
Malloy wasn’t trying to sell the present- rather the future Nova. I’ve never really payed much attention to Newcomb. But Seder’s been on the edge for months- I really like Rachel but don’t hear her as much. Just think about Seder taking Franken’s place, Rachel in the afternoon- (I don’t care much for Rantin’ Randy) and Maron in the morning  :yippee:
Whatever happened to Peter Werbe? John whatisname puts me to sleep 🙄
I’d rather have a subscription leftie network that doesn’t have to advertise. Malloy made a big point of saying that Nova would always be free on air or real-time web broadcast.
Schultz keeps making the point that there are not enough votes to impeach the neocon dictator..
Now there were a lot of political analysis types that said that due to gerrymandering and voter apathy there would not be enough dem votes to make a significant change in congress in Nov 2006 too.
Now I would think that if the dems brought a good case and the Rethugs voted against impeachment they are admitting they are complicit in the war crimes he committed.
The problem is we need a different law enforcement branch to arrest them all and send them to the Hague since Alberto certainly would not do it .
In the 19th century there was a name for that branch of government .
Worked well in France in about 1780 too.. :gate: :omg: :jason: :jason: :fist:
BTW- since I’m shamelessly shilling for Nova- unlimited podcasting for $100 a year :peace:
Hubble’s primary camera shuts down
BALTIMORE (AP) — The primary camera on the Hubble Space Telescope has shut down and is likely to be only marginally restored, NASA said Monday, a collapse one astronomer called “a great loss.”
While other scientific work can still be done by the aging observatory, the unit that failed, the Advanced Camera for Surveys, is the one most scientists depend upon. NASA scientists say they expect to be able to restore just one-third of its observation ability, probably by mid-February.

My bet is Franken didn’t re-up his 3 year conntract.
AAR went on air three years ago the end of March. Franken’s last broadcast is Feb 14. Looks like 2 years 46 weeks from the first broadcast.
Two years ago runor had it that he had agred to stay for 3 years and that is why he didn’t run for the seat of the then senior MN senator who did not seek re-election after only one term.

My bet would be that the “New AAR” won’t offer to renew Als contract .. At least not at that price for a 12th place showing in the ratings.. This isn’t foot ball after all . :yuck: :fustrate: :paranoid:

re:#17 Maron had a half-hour special on CC. On fridays, they’ll have a couple of half-hour shows in a row featuring one stand-up. Marc’s doing a lot of stand-up on the West coast- pretty much working every night. I think you can probably see his last show for free at the CC website (or maybe for some $ at Itunes). He was pretty good- definetely a breath of fresh air compared to Carlos Mencina who doesn’t have anything original to say.
“Do they pay for it or is it just “free†advertising ” sarcasm or irony?
I still would like to get our “Immigrant army” together in the parking lot then call into C-span .. If we got on the air we could all yell something out of Hezbollah dialog and fire our assault weapons into the air ..

The TeeVee industry being a capitalist venture might give the comics spots on a show like comedy central simply to promote there shows. ( they get paid by the sponsors but don’t have to pay the comedian… unpaid labor.. the dream of the capitalist system) The comedian might have to furnish the shows producer with pre tapped material ..or travel to there studio to be on live or be taped. Having the TeeVee company doing a live telecast from someplace other than there studio complex is an expensive proposition
Hi Druid, :gate: not sure what video you’re talking about.
I don’t think Marc gave a shit where the money came from and I don’t think it cost him anything.
Fred, don’t you work for a private company? Let me know when you find the land of milk and honey where things are different – I want to live and work there
They pay the talent, even on Comedy Central. At least scale. I’m sure there are residuals every time it gets re-run, too.

I am voting for Franken if he runs. Several years ago I had the chance to give a half-hour presentation to Paul Wellstone and figure that Franken alone can carry on Wellstone’s legacy. Wellstone was brutally honest and forthright one-on-one. The current guy in there Norm Coleman is an opportunist.
I’m glad to know Maron is one of those people with no obvious means of support .. The problem with having him on the radio is that he can probably make 2k a day doing stand up in front of an audience .. if he has to go some place and perform on a regular basis for free or even for $100/hr he has to make a decision especially if the regular job is on the opposite end of the day from his club performances .
I finally got Maron punched in on my XM radio after more than a year of trying. It has a weird feature that the radio will beep at you if it finds a particular artist is playing on one of its channels. The problem is that you have to accidentally stumble over the artist before you can “lock” it in. Now that I have Marc locked in, XM seems to play a bit at least once every couple of days. So far only the National Lampoon channel has popped up and they seem to bleep the routines heavily.
I think Marc sacrificed a lot to work for AAR for the time he did- and then they :fu: him over. I think if he was offered something by Nova or something else he’d find a way to keep his comic career going but he wouldn’t be doing radio for the big money nessecarily. Of course on the other hand “fool me once, shame on me……………….won’t get fooled again……. heh, heh,heh with chucklenutz’ smirk :rofl2: :slap: :nana:
Hey Pj- yeah, definitley go ahead….but wait till you finish your paper!!
We need to talk soon anyway because we are on the verge of being handed an actual budget worthy sum to start something in radio drama!
Besides that and regarding CC:
Fred-Will and I went to the comdey central taping for Marc, and it was in a NYC theater which had a whole lineup of half hour to 45 min shows….and they turned over the audience every couple of shows or so, because they have a big boom with steady cam and are filimg the crowd as part of ths whow. They do a week of these and I expectt that they pay the talent something like scale or whatever because its a great platform for comics…so, because minors arent allowed Marc had us sit in a hidde area so we wouldnt be on camera….
CC has a regular lineup of shows and alot of funny movies and cartoons and stuff. I think that they make deals with syndicators…..and then they have their own shows like the daily show and colbert…and the comedy standup things that they run over and over…then they make those things available on itunes and through xbox and whatever….
It’s not as if he’d be doing his radio show for Orem, Utah, so there are lots of opportunities in a place like LA or NYC to do standup. Not that anybody is making a fortune doing sets at Giggles. He was was on the list of AAR creditors for over 40k. I wonder how much of that he’ll actually see from the change in ownership.
apparently, and according to the NY Daily News (if you wanna buy a bridge,) the business model for real success for AAR is gonna be syndicator…and that there will have to be major changes.
But Al has already announced that he is leaving and that his last show is on Feb 14th…when Thomm Hartman will take over for him.
And hopefully we will hear whatever else is coming up soon.
I dont think that a deal could be made with Al’s contract outstanding and the 300,000+ that they owe him. I expect that he had to let them out for some sorta buyout. He wa sleaving anyway…and as stale as he has become, Im gonna miss him.
But I hope that we see some shakeups and see Marc back soon!!!
How does one get Nova M and who have they got besides Malloy?
I guess I need to look them up.
Nova M business model is to own radio stations .. That would insure that they continued to put out liberal talk and not be bought off .. They have only one station KPHX in Phoenix and are syndicating Malloy . .. KPHX is also the AAR affiliate in Phoenix.. You can stream them from the links on the right side of our web page. ( the WM stream is the only one that currently works)
You can get podcasts for Newcrum and Malloy off their web site at http://www.novamradio.com
No barbed wire or walls around jails where ex-Congressmen serve time
Three of the four ex-Congressmen behind bars, like former Ohio Republican Bob Ney, are serving time in federal facilities that have no wall or fence around them, according to a report in today’s Roll Call. In spite of this fact, law enforcement officials sought to ward off the notion that they were serving time in a ‘Club Fed’-like jail.
Four Congressmen are currently behind bars, according to the article by Rachel Van Dongen: James Traficant, a former Ohio Democrat; Frank Ballance, a former North Carolina Democrat; Randall ‘Duke’ Cunningham, a California Republican; and Ney. Traficant is currently housed in Minnesota’s Rochester Medical Center for unstated medical reasons. But the other three are incarcerated in federal penitentiaries.

Oh yeah, Druid, I didn’t recognize the title. 😳
I like Peter B. He looks like Frasier Crane.
Hah! We’ve cracked double digits, temperature-wise, and it’s only 10:00. Could be in for a scorcher today.
Hello, y’all,
I think the jury is still out for a while on this AAR deal. Meanwhile, we can drive ourselves crazy with speculation. Hey, it stirs up the drink. However, it is a matter of how things pan out at AAR. :smack: My grasp of the obvious is severe. The Greens will save the network for now and good for them, FOGs or not. For better or worse, the AAR ‘brand’ and model was destroyed by Gold&^*%. It will not come back in the way most of us remember from the beginning times when I thought it was the best. It now will have to settle at being a syndicator and they don’t have that strong of a lineup when you look at it.
Vern’s handicap…
Young Turks-Lame attempt to replace MS. I don’t hear them so I am being a little unfair. I like Press (not AAR). Probably an SF thing.
Seder-The best AAR has left. I wish he would lean more on the funny. He could do it. Hopefully Maron’s best advocate.
Hartmann-I respect this man but entertainment has to be part of the package and he is not that entertaining.
Randi-At this time, the franchise, yet not that great. Still, I can listen. She could use a Lanpher but that won’t happen.
Maddow-I really like Rachel but Jones is not enough to prop her up. She needs a partner or ensemble, like she used to have.
The rest are OK but they are filler and I doubt get picked up much except for that. Sad because I used to love AAR weekend programming. Out here it is sprinkled in between infomercials.
The perfect model for AAR was Morning Sedition. Not a droning message banging rant but a well rounded show with politics and comment, culture and entertainment, and most of the time FUNNY. A masterful blend and their other shows were more in that mode back then. It remains to be seen if the ‘new boss’ will get that. I agree with Melina, one 1K contribution does not necessarily mean FOG so I hope there is room in the 24 hour lineup for some refitting.
Sadly, they have lost of the territory and AAR may be hard pressed to take over entire schedules these days, settling for distributing bits and pieces. I want to remain positive and ready to advocate but this minefield is forever changing. If Maron has a place in radio, it could very well be elsewhere. I don’t think he will take a sucker deal anywhere just to get back on the air. He shouldn’t have to at this point.
Hey, Vern. Turds? I don’t like them much at all. I listen to Press when I’m near the computer at the time he’s on, and he’s OK. Not “appointment” radio. Agree that Seder is the pick of the litter at this point. I make a point of listening to his show. I was off Franken for quite a while, and there are some things he does that bug me, but I like his guests, and listen to him more often than not. I take the dog out during his show, and it’s rare that I go and grab the podcast to see what I missed. Randi, well, sometimes I can listen, and sometimes I can’t stand to listen. It bugs me that she seems to think she’s the only source of information, and that she seems to think anything positive that happens is all due to her and her alone. Frankly, by the time her show is on, I’ve already heard and read whatever she’s got to say. I really don’t like Maddow at all. She’s a good newsreader, but that’s about it. I just find her tone to be smug and snarky.
I couldn’t even tell you what’s on after that, since I just plain don’t listen.
Be nice to hear Marc on the air every day – but only if he can get a budget to pay staff and writers to do the kind of show that MS had become. They really blew it when they let that go (as we – and anybody with a brain and a sense of humor – all know).
Hey- whats with the storm that my cousin tells me about….?
Any particular part of the world? Or is it a political storm?
I must be slipping, I didn’t know this.

But unless they are in NYC, right now, there is nothing much….
Hi wants to do all of his own voiceovers as long as he can.
I think that a letter-writing to the Green FOG boys is a good idea. If they think they could generate audience goodwill by bringing back MS, they might even do it. But without Riley. :nana:
What we saw when Marc subbed for Sam would be just fine — Marc, Kent doing Lawton and Angus, Jim doing the Milfingtons, and bring back Tom Johnson. I miss Pendejo. 🙁
No, you wouldn’t have Morning Sedition Radio Theatre, but you’d have enough. Put Dan, Brendan and K-Lo in the booth and you have all of MS that you really need. And aside from having to pay Maron blood money, it wouldn’t be that expensive.

For the eyes of ‘kat with apologies to those who could care less
This evening, we will announce that Barry Bonds, the 14-year Giants veteran and seven-time National League Most Valuable Player, signed a one-year contract with the Giants.
As you’ve probably heard, the process of negotiating this contract was complex, lengthy and highly unconventional. This decision was not taken lightly and we spent significant time evaluating all of the elements and circumstances surrounding the negotiations before we made a final determination to move forward.
Of particular concern were the allegations against Barry in the New York Daily News on January 12th. We consider any action by one player to unfairly damage the reputation of another player to be a serious matter. Based on the information that we have at hand in this matter and in discussions with both players, all of the facts have not been accurately portrayed. After evaluating the situation and its potential impact on clubhouse chemistry, we came to the conclusion that the Giants’ players will be able to function as a team committed to supporting each other and dedicated to doing everything they can to succeed on the playing field.
Additionally, we felt that with these assurances, signing Barry to a one-year contract helped us pursue a long-term strategy toward getting the club back on track. With his presence in our lineup and only a one-year contractual commitment, we were able to avoid the temptation to trade away some of our valuable young pitching talent and were able to free up long-range funds to acquire a front line pitcher. These decisions enabled us to sign Barry Zito, retain our promising and highly sought-after young pitchers and fill our need for a power hitter in the middle of our lineup. We believe that this combination of moves provides the Giants with a better chance of winning in 2007 and in the years ahead.
You may also be interested to know that even with the signing of the 42-year-old Bonds, the average age of the 2007 Giants will be 30.7 years versus 32.7 in 2006. So we have gotten younger and presumably healthier as we stated we would try to do when the 2006 season ended.
I understand that this has been a particularly controversial and difficult decision and that there are strong opinions on both sides of the issue. I received letters, emails, phone calls and had many conversations with many of our season ticket holders during our Fanfest. I truly appreciate your passion for the Giants as we work through these complex issues. At the end of the day, I believe we have put together an exciting team for the coming season.
Like you, I am pleased that we have been able to complete this process so that we can all turn our attention to the day when pitchers and catchers report to Arizona on February 14. Thank you again for your commitment to the Giants and I look forward to seeing you at Spring Training or when we open our All-Star Season at AT&T Park.
Sincerely,
Peter A. Magowan

Thor’s Helmet from CFHT
Credit & Copyright: Jean-Charles Cuillandre (CFHT), Hawaiian Starlight, CFHT
Explanation: NGC 2359 is a striking emission nebula with an impressive popular name – Thor’s Helmet Sure, its suggestive winged appearance might lead some to refer to it as the “duck nebula”, but if you were a nebula which name would you choose? By any name NGC 2359 is a bubble-like nebula some 30 light-years across, blown by energetic winds from an extremely hot star seen near the center and classified as a Wolf-Rayet star. Wolf-Rayet stars are rare massive blue giants which develop stellar winds with speeds of millions of kilometers per hour. Interactions with a nearby large molecular cloud are thought to have contributed to this nebula’s more complex shape and curved bow-shock structures. NGC 2359 is about 15,000 light-years distant toward the constellation Canis Major.
