For anyone who’s interested. 24 minutes into the Malloy show last night is an interview with Joe Trippi- consultant to Nova M and Howard Dean’s former campaign manager. He give an outline to how Nova hopes to build a network outside the top down failed model of AAR. They hope to build from the bottom up. He made a big point that they WILL NOT be subject to big buisness’s approval.
Malloy said that AAR is going to fail and to not kid yourself that it’s been saved. Of course, he’s trying to make a go of Nova and of course he’s probably bitter because they owe him about 50K.
Anyway, there you go for what it’s worth. :tinfoil: :cat: :cold:

Yeah, but I bet Mike doesn’t have holes in HIS socks. ๐
Many people say that the radio format has to be both informative and entertaining. I don’t see what is so entertaining about Lipprick and Handjob but just railing on continuously about the false pretenses for the war and making fun of Bush is not what people want to hear either .. I think at this point a liberal cooking channel on cable where they give detailed instructions in how to mix your fertilizer , make a sling shot for a wine bottle, re bore your rifle barrel, intimidate a cop and other useful things might be a winner . ๐ก ๐ก :gate: :omg: :jason: :jason: :fist:

AAR will fail if it continues to be an ego project for people with no knowledge about radio. Alas, I fear that’s what’s going on. I can’t help but have a sense that Mark Green enjoys guesting on AAR shows and wants a radio network to play with. Watch for him to get his own show — perhaps not every day, but on the weekend. I’m not convinced that Nova M’s folks know radio all that well either. Mike Newcomb is a wealthy physician with the money to do a radio show. John Zogby is a pollster, Joe Trippi is a political operative. I’m not saying that they CAN’T make it work, but radio is a peculiar animal.
Think about baseball. Which organizations succeed? The ones in which the owners/investors bring in smart baseball people and leave them alone to do their job. The same applies to radio. So far, AAR and Nova M (which are really like bickering brothers) haven’t really left the ego/playtoy model.
In todays world of corporatism it is a game of egos , juggling your books and not getting caught, getting the best return on investment NOW and TO HELL with tomorrow..

Well theyve said as much, Mark Green will get a show but I doubt he has time for full time….and I dont know what the format would be. Hell, I’d give Mark Green a chance if its true that they want to restore AAR to its former …um…brilliance.
Ive beent hinkin about those who are saying that being a syndicator works the best. If the fairness docterine were in effect, not to mention all the other regulations that the republicans have been doing away with for so many years, even AAR would have to have some conservative programming.
That seems to be the thing…if having the actual brick and morthat network, however that works, is ultimately corporatterritory if its to be more than a struggling group od stations, such as 1600, which might just as easily go to a spanish language format, maybe its best to spend the money on high quality programming and a huge social movement to request this stuff while mandating some of it by law!
It almost starts to make sense to take the station licenses away from the corporations and have the govt run the infrastructure with a preset amount of different contents…
Uh oh…Maybe thats a little communist? Socialist?

Reid is on with IMus….
I couldn’t find anything on the web about the Scarbourogh “story”. I think it just exists in Joe’s inner-ear.
If I understand things right, Nova is hoping to build/buy a bricks and mortar network while simultaneously paying for itself on annual podcast fee’s. Just judging from our little community here, I think it makes sense. People on very different schedules want to be able to hear what they want to hear when they want to hear it :pup:
In this end of the empire environment most business schools as well as organizations like the National Chamber of Commerce see the SBR becoming just that a banana republic ( It is already but the politicians on both sides of the fence won’t admit it) They see no point in even trying to compete with China so they are trying to get the most cash out of it before it collaspes . Global warming , energy independence and all these other over consumption induced problems are just on the surface of the problems that we will not be able to afford to solve . :gate: :omg: :jason: :jason: :fist:

I think the totalitarian state is to counter the attack of the half boiled frogs thats is about to occur. I am really sorry to hear that the Nova M model is going to be based on subscriptions. It just portends that there will be more talking amongst ourselves. I love Malloy but I think he should show a little more class than railing against AAR. If it is going to go down, it will do so on its own and his public bitterness is beneath him and unproductive (BTW, have I told you today how much I hate Danny Gold#$%@^%^?). I think of all people Maron has suffered the AAR experience most of all and yet you don’t see him going to this level.
I don’t see great things for Nova M or AAR as long as their directions are not based on free over the airwaves broadcasting that any and all can easlily tune in without jumping through hoops and monetary commitment. The message needs to be delivered to all, even those without cable, XM, Sirius, and even computers, pure and easy.
perhaps they need to hire a former clear channel exec

Georgia is abuzz…a winter storm warning has been issued and the grocery stores are being emptied out as I type and schools are preparing to close…. gosh & gasp => expected freezing rain and SLEET, hold on to your skivvies!
I got the 17″ screen imac with 1 GB memory and 250GB hard drive. I think that these are good for people who don’t wanna screw with a whole lot. I am utilizing more of the features it offers than I ever did with the PC just because it’s easier. What I am really liking are the widgets that are just a click of the rollerball. I can get the weather, time, date, google search bar, dictionary/thesaurus, language translater, calculator, and sticky notes, flight search etc. The Apple store offered a class for people switching from a PC. It was pretty basic but since I had been messing with this for a week before i took it, I had a whole bunch of questions I had written down.
The thing is that I was transferred so many times and put in so many queues that it was impossible that anyone might have even looked at my configuration. And the new outsourcing at dell is to canada….of whom I dealth with 2…and found them to not be very clever. The one guy in TX that I got was like, try this and this, but its not my area …but I can help you….until he couldnt….oh well…
The Canadians are pretty dull and rote…I usually like canadians but I got the feeling that they are maybe not making very much $ in that job…
Yeah, Apple bought an old post office in the Soho area (and they have a big store in my mall here) and Mom loves it…she seems to like the idea. I have a 24″ screen on my new dell and its fantastic…but shes got such a small apt that the computer is next to the TV and she wants them separate, even if she gets a TV card or the iTV or whatever that thing is.
But in that case she should probably get a laptop so she can move around with it. Its an L shaped studio so shes got a table area and a bed area…
But Ill bet she likes the design of the macs…
Well, Vern, I think that NovaM is utilizing both the air waves and podcasting. One by one they are buying radio stations, obviously that’s going to take a while, so, in the meantime, to generate income, they’re doing the podcast thing. Dr. Mike doesn’t have much radio experience but I think that Jeff Farias, his producer, does. And I think that Dr. Mike leans on him a lot.
My space is pretty small too. I think the 24″ screen would have taken up a whole wall for me. The 17″ is plenty big.
Kat, Mom was just saying that that was an old story and that she couldnt understand either why Joe would go with it. I havent seen much else on it so can only think that its a WH talking points memo being floated in order to gear up to the next war….scary….
Yeah, apparently that storm thats swinging by you is then coming here with 3-4 inches of snow and then rain…? They arent sure whats gonna happen.
Funny that my cousin on Cape Cod was waiting through today because there is an eastern mass storm that is only really on the cape as far as I can see…and driving off the cape is easy….but then she will drive into this big storm…I somehow see the wheels coming off this weekend.
Ive got to bring the wood in and all….
KP, I don’t know as much as you with ‘boots on the ground’ but I think that their model may be wrong. I come from a different broken but related industry and I am convinced that given their lack of outlets and exposure, they need to get their product out there and that means free and easy, even on the internets. They are in almost no markets and they could use the internets to build listenership and demand but it won’t happen with a $100 cover charge.
With the scarcity of spectrum, all the licenses are locked up in every market, and they are very expensive to buy. So you either need to lease airtime on stations (as AAR has done; this leads to pretty unmotivated local stations for the most part, and little or no promotion), or to try and buy up failing stations in smaller markets (NovaM’s plan). With syndication, you have more or less the same costs for producing the shows, but none of the costs associated with buying stations. Additionally, local stations – having paid money to buy the shows – are more likely to try and promote them.
Of course, you need to produce quality shows, and you need to get people out there selling them. And the shows need to perform well, or they’ll be gone.
I can see a subscription-based plan working, but it needs to offer something above and beyond just providing recorded shows. I can think of a bunch of things that would be fairly cheap to implement, but would make subscribers feel “special,” and feel as if they’re getting a little something extra. I also think it’s pretty difficult to attract new folks – you’re kind of limited to the already converted.
$10 a month for NovaM, which is more or less just Malloy and Dr. Mike, seems like a stretch to me. Aside from the upfront costs of equipment, you can get satellite radio for about the same monthly cost (and don’t forget that there are costs associated with podcasts, too – an Internet connection and a computer, at the very least), and have a much wider variety of content to listen to.
Frankly, I think the costs associated with providing podcasts of shows are a fairly cheap form of advertising. It’s the only way that some of us can possibly listen, and it’s a great way to introduce our families and friends to shows that they never would hear otherwise. How many of us turned somebody on to MS that way?
I hope NovaM succeeds, and I hope AAR does too. The same for Big Ed and Stephie Miller. I’m just not sure that relying on subscribers to generate income is a very good business model, though.
NovaM has affiliates in South Fla, San Fransisco, Sacremento, Seattle plus they are on Sirius. NovaM hasn’t even been in existence a year. I don’t think that’s too bad. It’s gonna take time.
Its only good if it can be also your TV or you have an office. I have a very cold mud room off of the kitchen that is opened and I use it as a computer/bird room…and the dogs sleep here…so instead of having a kitchen TV I have the TV on the computer in a little or whole screen.
Apparently this thing is hi def so if I get it a hi-def cable box I can save stuff in hi def format…..
These files (which I finally found…strangely, no one could tell me where media center hides its media files) are configured ONLY for media center so if there is a hack I’ll have to find it
One thing that I can do is burn DVDs from WMC…but I have to go out and buy some.
Re Iran story
Let’s watch how this develops. What Melina just said is exactly what I was thinking. They are trying to let Iran ‘creep’ into the conversation and at some point it becomes a given that Iran needs to be dealt with.
Press moved on from breast feeding and touched on this Iran thing before they moved into the weekly American Idol report. For the neocons this may be their last shot for a while so look out for the Hail Mary or some shot to utilize the time they have left.
Kat, did you catch Jay Severin on Imus this AM? Mom just called me all hysterical about how much he hates women and hes talking about Hillary and the “mammary vote” and it so angers her because she was part of the womens movement…on and on…
To me, it seems that the best way to deal with the severins is to just say, Yeah, if the women want he in office we can put her in office…just leave them as scared and helpless as they are.
The spiteful hate against Hilla ryi s so interesting because she hasnt really dont anything much worse than any politician to anyone…so the people who hate her do so for something that she represents…
I dont like her positioning of herself and that carefulness, but maybe ultimately to move the country back in some sort of real direction we need someone that controlled…I dunno…
The only reason I feel compelled to buy a subscription to NovaM right now is to support it. I don’t need to catch any of the shows every minute every day like with Marc’s shows. Another reason I might get a subscription is that I can’t get the friggin station in every part of the Valley. When i was working at the scene shop, am radio was useless and I really wanted to listen to talk radio. I woul;d buy the podcaste in that situation.
Nova M does not have an affiliate in SF.
Malloy only got on the local CCR station first in nation because of listener outrage when AAR let him go. The local station is run by a right wing station mgr who I am convinced is trying to undermine and sabotage so at some point in the future they can ‘pull the plug’ and claim commercial failure.
As far as Nova and AAR goes….well, I think that the subscription thing is a mistake in general…and I think that maybe being a producing syndicator is the way to go…the idea should be to get the shows out there and not to make an empire that involves cash flow and making money. The model of making income via subscriptions doesn’t seem to work all that well….and having an actual network lets you in for the obvious issues that the fairness doctrine brings up.
And if Malloy is railing on about AAR, then I would be very pissed off….what does that serve anyone?…it certainly hurts the cause.
Even the Turks or Springer are better to have on the air than Rush and O’Reilly…
I get this Nader vibe from Malloy…like he has an anger management problem.
I just heard on Democracy Now the Negroponte called Chavez a
“radical populist”. Now that that link will be thrown into the repig echo-chamber, the next populist democrat (don’t know who that would be) to run for president will forever be linked in the feeble minds of the sheeple as a ‘radical’.
When I first encountered the idea of ‘deconstruction’ in college it was being taught by a marxist religion professor. I hated the idea that someone would try to prevert language and try to make words meaningless. I never thought it would be the right-wing who would pull it off- sheesh :tinfoil: ๐ฟ ๐ฟ
I have to think that the subscription income is so very little against the overall expense of AAR and Nova M and always will be. Why not just figure out a way to write it off as promotion and marketing expense or loss?
can you stream Nova live for free?
Malloy’s whole schtick is about anger and bitterness- that’s why I listen to him…. it’s cheap therapy :bong:  :tommygun: :reaper:
If you subscribe you may win $10,000. Anyone feeling lucky?
Yes you can stream live for free.
You can stream for free in real-time. And of course the broadcasts will always be free. I don’t think Malloy is hoping that AAR fails or that he wishes them ill- he’s just sayin’
He’s probably got more inside info than anyone outside of Seder or Franken.
So, I got my quarterly care package from M$ yesterday, and broke a couple of my most sacred commandments. The first is, “thou shalt not install a new OS until at least the first service pack.” I was actually more interested in Office 2007, and installed that on my laptop, and then figured, ah, what the hell, I might as well install Vista. The second is, “thou shalt always do a clean install of a new OS.” But, well, I’d just installed Office, and I didn’t really feel like wiping everything out and doing it all over again. So, I went ahead and did the upgrade. Took about an hour, all hands off and fairly smooth. Had to do a couple of updates (drivers and whatnot), and there are a couple of relatively insignificant apps that don’t work (need to check for updates), but mostly everything went w/o a hitch. Of course, I did it very late, so I didn’t get a chance to play much. We’ll have to see if any problems develop.
There was someone at Slate.com who helped develop Vista who wrote about what to expect- strongly implied that you’d need a new computer to get Vista premium to work. ๐ฏ
Streaming live is not the point. Everyone has time demands or geographic limitations that might make it impossible to hear a show in real time. How many of us actually got the Marc Maron Show over the air or could stay up at the hours it streamed? That show free and easily available online would have been a great promotional tool to grow its popularity, yet AAR made it part of the premium so I could not send friends a link to check it out.
It seems there’s always some link that someone creates to get around podcasting- if you know a friendly blog to go to :hubba:
There’s nothing in the real world right now to make everyone happy. Just think what we’ve created out of whole cloth in the last three years starting with AAR :dancers:
You need fairly new hardware. I have the Business edition. The top of the line is the “ultimate” edition, which adds windows media center, drive encryption, parental controls, DVD Maker. All of which I can accomplish by other means, or just plain don’t need. Even the stuff like the desktop widgets are all things I already had – just not built in to the OS. So, I wouldn’t have run out to buy it, but the Aero graphics are pretty nifty, so WTF.
Even the guy who wrote the article admitted as much (about the redundent bells and whistles)
Yeah. I mean, it’s kinda cool to see through the menu bar, and the interface looks nice, but not a mandatory upgrade, as far as I can see. The new Office interface looks like a big improvement, though. I need to get that installed on my primary computer so I can evaluate it more completely.
art, I get that and I are one, but the whole cloth point is to deliver this message and format to any and all and grow the distribution system. Subscriptions and limitations work against that in the face of a juggernaut already massively in place and FREE.
Wow PJ- I hope that I get the ultimate edition …I should considering that I have media cener and this fancy new machine. It comes with a free upgrade…
Anyway, apparently the basic home one is pretty basic, but more stable and safer. You dont get the bells and whistles with that but it will run on most machines.. For the ultimate people will need ot at least upgrade memory and stuff…we’ll see how it goes over.
I dont like Malloy’s anger thing…I dont think its therapy or that it gets much done in the real world…and is more likely to turn people off….
He has so much information to give the world and he is only speaking to a pretty radical angry fringe….
the delivery is important too…
I look at Malloy more as entertainment. I’m angry but I wouldn’t say I’m radical- and you’re right, he’s got a lot of good information.
wvmc3d – There’s a free jaggernaut alright but we’re not a part of it (yet). What alternatives have you got?
Gotta go to sleep-land now. Melina, hope you and Will start feeling better. :om:
Malloy’s passion and anger and that of his listeners has kept him in the game and I appreciate that. I just think his anti-AAR stance does not help the cause and if there really is a move at Nova M to steal AAR talent, that is not useful either. Do we really eat our own?
I hope that the AAR personality he refers to is Maron but I can’t see that happening and I wish for Marc a more secure and financed production.
Maron back on radio? Priceless!
Night, art. We won’t get it in a day but I am sure that juggernaut was subsidized and a lot of losses in that day. Giving it up free on the ‘nets is an easy start. This is a whole new opportunity that did not exist then and making it a pay per hear is a non-starter.
The free airwaves thing involves a lot of reversals on the assaults from back in the Reagan and Clinton eras which actually seems to be starting to happen.
You’ll probably get the “Home Premium” edition, which has the Windows Media Center stuff, but not the business stuff (shadow copy backup, domain join, remote desktop, etc.).
So, I see you haven’t migrated your blog over to your domain. You want me to just put in a redirect page to the blog page for now? Then you can start using the domain name for links and stuff.

Yeah, RAID is different from backup. It’s a hardware configuration, either configured for high performance (RAID 0 – more “AID” than “RAID”), or for redundancy.

the teenager wants to build himself a new pc so he can get Vista. he did a fine job building his last computer and I’ve read that a lot of kids don’t use a laptop at college (they get stolen all the time).. suggested he wait and see where he ends up and then determine what he’ll need for that college. if it’s a desk top, then he can build it. if laptop, then I guess we have to purchase. anyone else know about these things?
i wanna go, too, druid.
marc, as i recall, didn’t seem too keen on the nova deal. wasn’t he talking to them? maybe that was the sense i got from him when we met him in la. since he was “fired” from aar twice, i think he’s savvy about who he’ll sign on with in the future.
Pretty tough to build a laptop. And, you’re right, they’re easier to steal (or just plain lose), and hauling one around everywhere you go is kind of a hassle, but it sure is nice when you have time to kill between classes, or you just plain want to go to the library and do work. So, I dunno, tough choice.
I don’t think NovaM was able to offer a large enough budget for him to do the kind of show he wants to do.
wasnt SF last night?…its the 31st, right?
Im still in a PC Dru…I like the choice and the figuring out of things. But when I hit a wall and need tech support its a problem…didnt use to be until the outsourcing and the rules for the workers to follow…horrible..
Now, Michael dell has seemingly created a “better” system giving an elite status to his XPS line and giving it its own tech support based out of Austin for one second before it jumped to Canada. But there are hugely long queues and then whe youe in the wrong one they have to send you to the right one. They seem to have split things up further , specializing in only wireless or only non XPS issues…and when you reach the line between one thing and another it seems like it might be back to the queue!
He’s there Thurs, Fri, Sat (2/1 – 2/3).
He’s gonna be in Philly in May, though.
isnt anyone going????
I may have to pass this time around. I haven’t seen ex around here recently so I am not sure about her.
The idea of tech support is to make it so you won’t want to call back ,, they got your money so what the H* do they really care . :yuck: :fustrate: :paranoid: :paranoid: .

I would never buy a laptop unless you can keep it under lock and key.. They also don’t like the cold very much so carrying them between classes is a hassle ..College students being klutzes like to spill their lunch on them too and they apparently tend to rip off the backpack and throw it in the corner when they get home then go .. oops …. They are not in general upgradeable or expandable and they break a lot and usually the only way to fix them is to buy another one ..
Sometimes playing solitaire during that geology class would have been fun though .. but .. the prof was a good shot with the eraser .. ๐ฎ ๐ฏ
don’t they have those tablet or small computer thingys they can use to take notes on and use wireless internet at the coffee shop and then sync up with the desktop? thought i saw pj and melina post a link to those at one time. maybe i’m imagining things.
i agree with fred; the purpose of customer service is customer-no-service. :cat:

I was suppose to be the chauffeur for the geriatric gathering devoted to Bridge playing this morning, but one of the players is in the hospital on death’s doorstep or something. :crap: Bridge was canceled and so was my free range of the basement dwellings and the rest of the house- an event that I’ve waited two weeks for!
Hey Fred- Ive opened and fixed many a laptop…I just look up the part on ebay and then open the thing (I learned from watching the tech that they send over to fix these things when you have tech support…)
And also….the old laptop that I fixed a few times and have had for a long, long time is one that Dell GAVE me when my one before it failed to the point that it was unrepairable. It took alot of tech support but finally I got someone in TX and they swapped it out for one that was better because they needed to match the specs. This was in the last few months of a 3 year service contract. So, I bought a 1 year service contract because thats all they would give me and I had minimal problems…and then after that was over I swaped out the keyboard and the hard drive and did something else that I think was the fan…not sue…but you can even replace the screen. When you buy from these liquidators on ebay they send along sintructions about how to access the component in you computer…its pretty cool.
You cant build one unless you get the parts from a particular company…I guess its really the case….then you would have a few choices of components like hard drive to fit that slot…but nothing like a desktop.
I love laptops but they can get stolen.
I may get one of those security cords for mine for the Kos….may even decide to bring the old one, though it has an externl wireless card and a smaller screen.
The one with the big screen is so great to travel with once youre sitting down with it!
you can work the system at Dell but it takes time…and time is what I dont have alot of these days.
does anyone know if its OK to use laser paper in an inkjet printer?

Has anyone used DVD Decrypter before?
I think I’m going to try iriverter and see what happens
A Stegosaurus fossil has been discovered in Europe, marking the first time the famous plated dinosaur has been found outside of North America.
The find supports a widely accepted idea that the two continents were once connected by a series of temporary land bridges which surfaced when sea levels dipped, allowing dinosaurs to cross.

To Ivins, “liberal” wasn’t an insult term. “Even I felt sorry for Richard Nixon when he left; there’s nothing you can do about being born liberal รขโฌโ fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed,” she wrote in a column included in her 1998 collection, “You Got to Dance With Them What Brung You.”

Just getting home, and heard about Molly Ivins. A real loss for the universe. How she can be gone while an evil slime like Dick Cheney still slithers about the earth doesn’t help the case for intelligent design or the existence of god.
PJ, do you know where in Philly Marc will be playing?
Andy, Maron will be at the Helium Comedy Club, May 9 – 12.
I’ve used dvd decrypter. Works like a charm.
Thanks PJ.
That must be a fairly new venue, anyway they’re not listing the show yet. the calender only goes up to March.
Yeah, I figured it out, though it does take a long time to work. I guess I should queue it up at night when I’m usually not using the computer. It worked great, except I need to figure out how to change the aspect ratio from 16:9 so I can use the full screen on the zen.
:yippee: i am officially coming to seattle!!!!!
we can go out drinking travis!!!!!
Wow! When is this happening, Sean? I may have to build my tolerance back up.

So sad about Molly Ivins ๐ฅ ๐ :gate: Our torch bearers are dying off! Who will carry the torch! Vigilance! But we can’t see, we need torches! Who will carry the torch???
First thing I thought was which government agency gave her breast cancer. Pentagon? CIA? FBI? WH? :tinfoil: ๐ฎ
Hey Travis, that’s cool your working the polls. It’ll probably be boring so bring a book. We weren’t allowed to have anything that could get online when I worked the polls last election(That we fuckin’ NAILED!) :yippee:

If you can’t carry the torch, light it. If you can’t light it, bring the matches.

Or wait! Maybe we should burn some stuff down! :fist:
Where’s Angus when you need him!
When I was working at the scene shop there was a Scot named Ian who worked there. Everytime he spoke I wanted him to turn into Angus McFahrquar. :rofl2:
I will definitely be going to see Marc at the Helium in May. If anyone else wants to go and needs a place to crash let me know.
GOOAALLL!!!!
I would LOVE to see Marc at a place called Helium. I’ll have to wait til he plays in LA and take another drive sometime. ‘Cept it would be funner if I could find someone to go with me.
