Sun Storm: A Coronal Mass Ejection
Credit: SOHO Consortium, ESA, NASA
Explanation: What’s happening to our Sun? Another Coronal Mass Ejection (CME)! The Sun-orbiting SOHO spacecraft has imaged many erupting filaments lifting off the active solar surface and blasting enormous bubbles of magnetic plasma into space. Direct light from the sun is blocked in the inner part of the above image, taken in 2002, and replaced by a simultaneous image of the Sun in ultraviolet light. The field of view extends over two million kilometers from the solar surface. While hints of these explosive events, called coronal mass ejections or CMEs, were discovered by spacecraft in the early 70s, this dramatic image is part of a detailed record of this CME’s development from the presently operating SOHO spacecraft. Near the minimum of the solar activity cycle CMEs occur about once a week, but near solar maximum rates of two or more per day are typical. Strong CMEs may profoundly influence space weather. Those directed toward our planet can have serious effects.

That’s a fair amount of snow. Even better, Mexico, NY (which is kinda between Oswego and Syracuse) got 57″ of snow. Here? Sunny and a chilly 16 degrees. Gotta love that lake effect snow. Bush is calling for cuts at Colorado’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory,
WASHINGTON — Weeks after pledging major investments in renewable energy, President George W. Bush is calling for cuts at Colorado’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, drawing complaints Monday from two of the state’s Democratic lawmakers.
A centerpiece of Bush’s State of the Union speech this year was a 20 percent cut in gasoline use by 2017 made possible in part by increasing the use of renewable fuels.
Colorado’s Democratic lawmakers criticized Bush’s proposed budget, delivered to Congress on Monday, for increasing spending on fossil fuel and nuclear development while cutting the Energy Department’s renewable research lab by 3 percent.
Bush’s proposed budget would decrease funding for the Golden, Colo., lab to $181.5 million from $187.5 million, they said. The lab does the nation’s primary research on renewable energy and energy efficiency.
NEW YORK, Feb 6 (Reuters) – Venezuela has emerged as a ready source of financing in Latin America, displacing the International Monetary Fund and causing repercussions in bond prices and credit ratings, Fitch Ratings said on Tuesday.
The shift toward Venezuela’s oil money — which has become a ready source of financing without any stated conditions — has been supported by the general sense of discontent with the progress of living standards under neo-liberal policies recommended by the IMF, Fitch analyst Morgan Harting told investors in New York.
Countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay have rushed to pay back their debt and “rid themselves of the stigma of IMF conditionality,” while accepting substantial investments and grants from Venezuela, Harting said.
“Would you really be as bullish on Argentina today if Venezuela had not extended it almost $4 billion in financing over the last couple of years? That has been critical in keeping Argentina afloat,” Harting said.
Hackers briefly overwhelmed at least three of the 13 computers that help manage global computer traffic Tuesday in one of the most significant attacks against the Internet since 2002.
Experts said the unusually powerful attacks lasted for hours but passed largely unnoticed by most computer users, a testament to the resiliency of the Internet. Behind the scenes, computer scientists worldwide raced to cope with enormous volumes of data that threatened to saturate some of the Internet’s most vital pipelines.
The attacks appeared to target UltraDNS, the company that operates servers managing traffic for Web sites ending in “org” and some other suffixes, experts said. Company officials did not immediately return telephone calls from The Associated Press.
Among the targeted “root” servers that manage global Internet traffic were ones operated by the Defense Department and the Internet’s primary oversight body.
WASHINGTON – House leaders got fed up with waiting around for the Senate to act and decided Tuesday to go ahead with their own vote on a resolution opposing President Bushรขโฌโขs plan to add 21,500 U.S. troops in Iraq.
The House vote will go ahead after Republicans blocked debate on a similar resolution Monday in the Senate.
NBCรขโฌโขs Mike Viqueira reported that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., had agreed to a personal request from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to let the Senate go first in recognition of the role that anti-war sentiment played in Democratsรขโฌโข winning control of the Senate in November.
But with senators unable to agree even on whether to debate the issue, much less vote on a resolution, Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., seized the initiative Tuesday and scheduled a House vote for next week.
Russia wants U.S. to sign deal saying militaries don’t target each other
MOSCOW: Russia wants to negotiate a deal with the United States saying their militaries will not target each other, as a way to assuage concerns over U.S. plans to deploy missile defense sites in central Europe, a senior Russian diplomat said Tuesday.
Alexander Kramarenko, head of the Foreign Ministry’s department for political forecasting, said Russia wants the Cold War foes to sign “legally binding agreements guaranteeing that their military potentials will not be targeted against each other” in view of the potential deployment of U.S. missile defense components abroad, the Interfax news agency reported.
President Vladimir Putin last week dismissed Washington’s claims that missile defense sites it hopes to establish in Poland and the Czech Republic were intended to counter threats posed by Iran, and he warned that Russia would take countermeasures.
Putin said that the Russian response will be “asymmetrical, but highly efficient.” He said that Russia’s latest Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles were capable of penetrating missile defenses and added that more-effective weapons systems are being developed.
The U.S. Justice Department is finishing rules to allow a vast expansion of DNA gathering that will include samples from most people arrested or detained by the federal authorities, officials said. The move would affect hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants each year.
Congress authorized the new DNA sampling in a little-noticed amendment to a renewal in January 2006 of the Violence Against Women Act, which protects and assists victims of sexual crimes. The amendment permits DNA collecting from anyone under criminal arrest by the federal authorities, and also from illegal immigrants detained by federal agents – by far the largest group to be affected by the new law.
Over the past year, the Justice Department has been doing an internal review and consulting other agencies on how to carry out the law.
The new law has strong support from organizations of crime victims and some women’s groups, who say it will help law enforcement officials identify sexual predators and detect dangerous criminals among illegal immigrants.
hey everyone!
Is Seanie around??
Seanie, Will is dying to see My Chemical Romance with Ben at the Hartford Civic Center on Feb 24th…do you know anyone on that tour?
They would be happy with the mosh pit, and it is an all ages show starting at 7:30 PM, …and I dont know if they are too young at 13 years old to let them in the mosh pit. I cvan get them seats in the 15th row above it all I guess but they are more expensive…
I dont know what to think….and if they have a parents waiting room and if I have to have a ticket to go into it…
I guess Ill call.
It seems like they are a little young. I think I went to my first alone concert at 16…but before that my mom took me to see Dylan, Ashford and Simpson, James Taylor…so many different people…because she was into it…But I am definitely not into this goth stuff…I don’t know how rough it is. It couldn’t possibly be like, Punk from the 70’s in NYC…right?
Yeah, Melina, I don’t think I’d let a 13 year old into a mosh pit these days. Moshing has become violent. :rofl2: Back in the day, it was rough but if someone fell, they always got picked up, there was an etiquette . And it seems like mosh pits here were infiltrated with jocks in the 90’s who used it as a way to vent their anger and violence on the weirdos. :growl: Stupid jocks.
Hey Melina, Krista, here’s my two cents if you want it. I let my Michelle go to a concert but she was 16 and it was the Indigo Girls. 13 seems pretty young and a Goth concert would certainly concern me.
I would be concerned that he’s just not big enough to be in a mosh pit too. Unless that’s a band that a lot of little kids like but they don’t sound like it and I’m sure Will wouldn’t want to go see a kid band at age 13 anyways. :jerk:
Well, yeah, I meant the Indigo Girls would be the female equivalent of soy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Actually, I like them, too. But then, I like tofu. I use soy milk when the occasion calls for it, but I can’t say as I particularly like it. Or dislike it. It’s basically white water.
Melina! America’s Funniest Videos just had an awesome video of some people watching tv on the couch and a cat, suddenly, jumps over everyones’ head being chased by a Boston Terrier! :rofl2: I love that show, despite that guys terrible jokes :jerk:
well, I already told him that I wont let him in general admission on the floor…so there are reserved seats above the floor but they are alot more expensive…and Im not gonna buy myself a ticket to sit through that…so if there is a parents waiting room I might consider it if he chips in his own money for his ticket and then Ill buy Ben’s (because his mother could never afford it…actually Ben has some money that I rewarded him for A’s on his report card!)…so we’ll see…Im exhausted so Im gonna call the venue tomorrow and see what they say about parental waiting rooms…
Krista in the old days in NYC it was really rough….the Mudd club was full of real punks with safety pins through their faces and samshin themselves all over the place. The slam dancing was hard slamming. I think that these guys are watered down and its younger kids that like them, thus the early start time…but I dont like General admission because of stampedes.
Will is bigger than me…maybe 5’10” by now, but Ben is still really little…he is developing slower than Will…so I would never send him into that.
We just got an email to see Jack Hannah and his animals downtown and we were pretty excited abotu that but all the good seats are already sold out…and all thats left is way in the back…just not worth it!
Im watching Scarborough and I find him making som sense…argh!
But I still wish a boston terrier would bite his face off!
Its actually sorta like AFV, considering that he did an xtended piece on Idol’s worst tryouts and is doing lots of showbiz….
I liked the Indigo girls for a bit…they are pretty hard core lesbo apparently at their concerts…but they are good songwriters.
Who knew that also when I went to see the vagina monologues that it would be a lesbian be-in as well..
I just gave Nellie a bath ๐ ๐ :pup: I got some good scratches on my thighs ๐ EVERYTHING is wet and smells like wet dog.

I would be concerned that he’s just not big enough to be in a mosh pit too. Unless that’s a band that a lot of little kids like but they don’t sound like it and I’m sure Will wouldn’t want to go see a kid band at age 13 anyways. :jerk:
It was my daughter, course I like the Indigo girls, maybe that’s why I’m always striking out with the ladies.
A lot of lesbians like the Indigo Girls, no?. So if you’re going to a concert to meet girls, yeah, you might be likely to strike out. :fustrate:
Now, the indigo children, they’re something different….
Ahh sorry, I’m in the middle of a repair install so I’m somewhat pre-occupied.
Who knew that also when I went to see the vagina monologues that it would be a lesbian be-in as well..

travis :pup: ..did you survive election day? :knit2:
Yep, yup…I’m extremely tired
I just gave Nellie a bath ๐ ๐ :pup: I got some good scratches on my thighs ๐ EVERYTHING is wet and smells like wet dog. I had a choice of getting her in the tub or putting the gate up :slap: so when I let her out of the tub she raced out of the bathroom and shook all over the house. Of course the afterbath is fun with the towels and the treats and now she is sleeping by the heater. I wish that MY worst problem was getting a bath. ๐ ๐
