OK, so it isn’t actually Good Friday (probably not even a good Friday), but all this talk of the repression of Catholics by “anti-Catholic vulgar trash-talking bigots” (could be worse, I guess; at least they’re not pedophiles – or Republicans) has me all full of thoughts of the crucifiction. Imagine, the nerve of anyone writing something satirical and :omg: vulgar about the poor downtrodden catholic church.
Update: As Pap suggested on Sam today, call ABC at 212-456-7777 and tell them to get Glenn Beck off of their our airwaves.

The final design for a “doomsday” vault that will house seeds from all known varieties of food crops has been unveiled by the Norwegian government.
The Svalbard International Seed Vault will be built into a mountainside on a remote island near the North Pole.
The vault aims to safeguard the world’s agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change.

Well… several people have suggested that nuclear winter could offset global warming .. Kind of like tuning your digital watch xtal with a sledge hammer .. 😮 :growl:
It was a slow news day.
The only thing of note was the death of Anna Nichole Smith.
Condolences to those few who are directly affected by the sudden demise.
Still…………………..,
while CNN and FOX go into 24/7 wall-to-wall dead Playmate mode, here are a few other things that happened yesterday
that they could be talking about (and on the right, the front pages of CBS News, ABC News, MSNBC, CNN, and FOX News as of 7 pm est):
• North Korea may agree to stop its nuclear program.
• Hamas and Fatah have reached an accord giving the Palestinians a united front.
• NATO’s top commander in Afghanistan says more troops will be needed to fight the Taliban, but many large NATO nations don’t want to send them.
• Iran has just tested a missile which can strike US ships in the Persian Gulf, and they promise to retaliate for any attack. Still, Bush’s advisers are pushing for war. :omg:
So you can see why Anna Nicole’s death is getting all the coverage.
It was a slow news day. :slap: :fu:

It is kind of amazing that North Korea says they will stop making nuclear weapons in exchange for energy generating technologies ..
Wasn’t that the deal Clinton reached with them ??.
Rethugs are 👿
So, naturallly what are the politically astute young turds wasting air-time with?
ANNA NICHOLE SMITH ❗ :smack: :rant1: :spank: :jerk: :fu:
It’s exactly the same deal that Clinton offered except now it’s going to cost more money :growl:
When the Palestinian factions stop feuding with each other for a year or so I would say it suceeded … after all they have only been feuding with themselves for 5000+ years. :reaper:
The continuation of US imperialism is predicated on there always being an enemy that we must be ready to engage.
Having forward bases lets us fight them there as apposed to here and if those bases just happen to also guard all those natural recourses from the indigenous people in those countries who just thought they owned them so much the better ..
Imperialism is 👿
Where is Farmerkat? Has her computer been sidelined?
Here is a technique that congress should use to question the rethugs ..
Four college students failed to show up for a final exam and offered the excuse that they were all traveling together and had a flat tire ..
The prof agreed to let them take the test providing each student took it in a separate room..
The test had a series of questions the first group being worth 45 points .. The second group consisted of only one question worth 55 points ,,
The second question was which tire was it ??
Thanks wvmc3d . I looked at the roster of 415 bands and the one that I really remember was Romeo Void, mainly for just a couple of their songs. They might have out-Pretender’d The Pretenders for a brief moment.

Ooh, them’s fightin’ words. NO ONE out-Pretenders the Pretenders. Chrissie rules. I gotta stick up for my homie.

Maurizio Seracini claims not to be pleased that he is the only person mentioned by his real name in “The Da Vinci Code.†A scientist turned art detective, he has no need for any manufactured mystery around Leonardo. For 32 years he has chased a real one — and he seems now, finally, poised to solve it.
It is a long, and satisfyingly complex, story. But it can be summed up with one question: What happened to “The Battle of Anghiari,†a grimacing crunch of men and horses considered by some experts to be Leonardo’s greatest painting?
Mr. Seracini thinks he knows, and he was recently given permission to restart his search, which involves using the most modern detecting equipment to peer through a 500-year-old wall in the Palazzo Vecchio here. On that wall, in 2002, he found a tantalizing crevice behind a Vasari fresco where the Leonardo may be.
If he succeeds, he could bring to light what one Leonardo scholar calls potentially “one of the great art finds of all time.†Or he could find nothing. Or he could find the painting wrecked by time and its own defects. In any case, after three obsessive decades Mr. Seracini is very much on the hook.

We’re still in Brooklyn but we’re headed for SI when Dad wakes up. I’m fine.

How many records did Romeo Void have? 1? 2?
WHT, you have to be careful what you say. It is easy to be misunderstood around these parts. The Pretenders definitely rule over RV. I considered them part of the British wave with apologies to the representative from Ohio (I liked Devo and Tin Huey as well). Stiff put out a great compilation of Akron based artist with a scratch and sniff tire tread on the cover.
That’s it. :crap: Anymore of this music talk and we should get a room.

The NY State attorney general, Andrew Cuomo, is suing Exxon and 4 other oil companies because of a spill of millions of gallons that remains under the Brooklyn neighborhood of Greenpoint and has polluted nearby Newton Creek. The stuff has been there for about 50 years.. Exxon was supposed to clean it up but the agreement to do so contained no deadlines and no penalties. (Kind of like Bushies’ plan for Iraq). It also didn’t require clean up of the soil or creek.

Hey, KP. They may not have SammyCam today. I don’t see it and they used it the other day.
As for the Void, Wikipedia says three.

I think they need to “set up” the Sammy cam, and that sometimes takes them a while, since I don’t think they’re exactly a bunch of technophiles.
Oh, Sammy cam is working for me. What a potty mouth.
Anybody catch who they were talking about XM and Sirius being in negotiations with? I just caught the tail end there.
KP, you can usually get it on a podcast at KPTK, especially if you know what the time was so you can isolate the segment.
Maybe Honorable SandBox Master can add the KPTK podcasts to his links.
On the other hand, if this groundswell we are starting gets Sammy on the air in Seattle, they might discontinue the podcasts.

For some reason I was looking under Multimedia and other than that I just follow the Top 20 list.
I could not find the Sammy Cam link on his page but found it on the AAR home page and it seems to be working. It did say it would not be up until 9:30 but if you were getting it.

Glaser was a big supporter of Marc and Morning Sedition and very responsive to most of our emails.
Yeah, Rob Glaser is an investor (and their biggest creditor, I believe, so he’s gonna be losing a few bucks).
Ew, you made go to the freepers.
The only response I ever got from Glaser was a form e-mail, saying how surprised he was that we could actually write, and tough shit but we’re all you’ve got, so you better support us no matter what.
Now, Jon Sinton was very responsive, and seemed to be a very genuine person, who really tried to make AAR work. Doug Kreeger, too. Not saying Glaser wasn’t – just that I never got any correspondence from him.
I may be confusing Glaser with Sinton. 😳

The Pretenders definitely rule over RV. I considered them part of the British wave with apologies to the representative from Ohio (I liked Devo and Tin Huey as well). Stiff put out a great compilation of Akron based artist with a scratch and sniff tire tread on the cover.
Comment by wvmc3d — February 9, 2007 @ 9:07 am
That Stiff comp used to funkify every album in its storage crate with that nasty tire smell, and I say that as someone who grew up breathing the stuff that spewed from the stacks at the rubber companies.
A lot of the “artists” that were on the comp weren’t actually real acts, at least at the time. Rachel Sweet cut a couple of songs as songwriting demos for Liam Sternberg (who also wrote “Walk Like An Egyptian”), and had no idea she was going to be on a record until Sternberg sent her a copy and she saw her picture on it.
You get extra bonus points for mentioning Tin Huey, whose first major-label album Contents Dislodged During Shipment is one of my faves of all time, although it sold so poorly that Warners bought them out of their deal rather than let them make another one. The Hueys are actually back together and gigging around Akron on an occasional basis.
As is Chi-Pig, who fared even worse by making an album for Island that ended up never even being released, although it is GREAT. It’s called Miami, and I think you can still get it on CD Baby. Sue Schmidt sent me a way cool Chi-Pig T-shirt a couple of years ago that I wear with pride, even though no one in Florida knows what the hell a Chi-Pig is.
:rofl2:
This concludes our lesson in Akron alternative music for today. It’s Friday, and Randi has bounced her :boobs: so my work week is done.

Was it Wednesday Maron said he would be on Conan?
Notice that Al slipped into the SammyCam this morning? I’ll miss Al but I guess I am not left enough for some. I really appreciate what he did and what he is going to try.
Hopefully, Nova M poaches some AAR talent giving some room at both for Maron to get another show where he won’t get screwed again.
I highly recommend that anyone with XM let them know you prefer Thom Hartmann to PhatHeaddie.

The weather in Syracuse isn’t bad. It’s just returned to “normal.” Just north of us, though, it’s pretty bad. 100 inches of snow in six days is pretty intense. That’s over eight feet.
And, yeah, they’re busting their asses trying to get to everyone, but this much snow this fast is pretty tough to overcome.
Great stuff, Kevin. Another smelly record that fumed up record stores and collections and homes was Ohio’s own Raspberries first album and it was out there.
As for the Romeo Void “controversy”, I see it as the Pretenders vs. the pretentious.

Well, that’s Cleveland history as opposed to Akron, so we’ll save that for another day so that I don’t go on babbling about Pere Ubu and make this post as long as the other one. 🙂
One of the things I miss about vinyl is its aroma, especially indie records that were pressed in smaller plants. I remember opening up my copy of Lincoln by They Might Be Giants and taking in its bouquet like it was a fine wine.

You mean “Alone Together,” Andy? Kinda like marble?
I give up on The Pretenders controversy. I have to admit that the Pretenders are one of my favorite bands of all time, and just wanted to support another contemporary group that bared some emotion and righteous anger in their songs.
Records are gone and record stores are going away too. At least around here anyways. These kids now don’t understand the culture they’re helping to make disappear by buying music online. The sarcastic record store clerk who makes fun of your purchases, the crowded store with weird music you’d never heard before, the disgusting record store bathroom that you would have to use because you’ve been browsing and bullshitting for so long, the cool guy discount, the funny comments on your hand written receipt, the occasional hanging out after hours getting drunk and stoned in the store, and the memories associated with the purchase of a particular record. :knit2: :reaper:
Yaeh, Kinda like marble. I didn’t think it would play.
Mike Malloy recently said that he was going to reveal the origin of the NovaM radio network name. My hunch is that it derives from a term found in a trilogy of William Burroughs novels, NovaMob (and also the name of a Husker Du spin-off band).
… one of the most prominent themes of the books is that language is literally a dangerous virus which must be battled with guerilla tactics involving delinearization of text as is exemplified by the cut-up and fold-in techniques.
The main story however quite clearly involves the view of a language virus as the source of several control mechanisms that keep humanity on this planet enslaved. The virus has several distinct personalities or attack paths which correspond to different persona of the Nova Mob. The virus/Mob is extraterrestrial and came to our world from the Crab Nebula which was the result of a supernova that occurred due to the Mob activities. Their first stop was however the planet Venus from where they attack Earth.
The goal of the Mob is to create so much conflict on earth that it will eventually explode in a supernova. This goal is close for the Mob when an intergalactical counterforce known as the Nova Police arrives. The Mob has actually been framed by one of its members: Izzy The Push. The Nova Police team up with other freedom fighters on Earth such as Hassan-i-Sabah and start fighting back.
The end of The Ticket That Exploded can be interpreted in two ways: either the Mob succeeds in creating a supernova of our planet, or they fail and get busted by the Nova Police, who destroys the language virus and replace it with total silence. Perhaps this is one and the same thing: both sides win.
And cut-outs!
So Seanie..where in Seattle will you be…call my cell phone or email me or myspace me…or skype-me.
Oh Druid… Heron has landed but leaving again at 8pm

Well, assuming you’re using windows and not linux, download the server, install it, edit the config file, and then start up the server. Then install the shoutcast DSP plugin for winamp (of course, you’ll need to have winamp installed) and use it to send your content to the server. The shoutcast documentation is pretty good, and it’s fairly straightforward to get it all up and running. If you’re running it on linux, it’s a bit more complicated, but still not too bad (apart from all of the content needing to be the same sampling rate).
Oh, man, what an excellent allusion. Double allusion, even.
If there’s a song that makes you want to throw yourself off a cliff more than “Alone Again, Naturally” I don’t know what it is.
Aquaman- I don’t remember the name of the Dave Mason album but I’ve got it in a box somewhere in the basement.
The first cut goes “Lookin’ all around me, what do I see”
I can hum the melody- one of the greatest albums ever.
It played beautifully despite looking like a piece of marble.

Stars of the Galactic Center
Credit: Susan Stolovy (SSC/Caltech) et al., JPL-Caltech, NASA
Explanation: The center of our Milky Way Galaxy is hidden from the prying eyes of optical telescopes by clouds of obscuring dust and gas. But in this stunning vista, the Spitzer Space Telescope’s infrared cameras, penetrate much of the dust revealing the stars of the crowded galactic center region. A mosaic of many smaller snapshots, the detailed, false-color image shows older, cool stars in bluish hues. Reddish glowing dust clouds are associated with young, hot stars in stellar nurseries. The galactic center lies some 26,000 light-years away, toward the constellation Sagittarius. At that distance, this picture spans about 900 light-years.
