A leader of the Texas House of Representatives apologized Friday for circulating an appeal to ban the teaching of evolution as derived from “Rabbinic writings†and other Jewish texts.
snip
On Feb. 9, Mr. Chisum, 68, an 18-year veteran of the House and second in power only to the speaker, Tom Craddick, sent a memorandum to all 149 other state representatives in Texas.
The one-page memorandum, marked “From: Representative Ben Bridges,†declared that “tax-supported evolution science†was based on religion and therefore unlawful under the United States Constitution.
It continued, “Indisputable evidence — long hidden but now available to everyone — demonstrates conclusively that so-called secular evolution science is the Big Bang 15-billion-year alternate ‘creation scenario’ of the Pharisee Religion.â€
“This scenario,†the memorandum stated, “is derived concept-for-concept from Rabbinic writings on the mystic ‘holy book’ kabbala dating back at least two millennia.â€
The memorandum said that inquiries could be directed to the Fair Education Foundation, a group in Georgia, and gave its Web address, fixedearth.com. The site features items belittling the Holocaust and portraying Earth as stationary as depicted in the Bible, with Jewish thinkers like “Kabbalist physicist Albert Einstein†responsible for contrary scientific theories.

A Superior Court judge on Friday gave New Jersey elections officials three months to prove that they had adequately tested the reliability of electronic voting machines or to remove them from service.
The judge, Linda R. Feinberg, said that beginning in early May she would hold public hearings into the security and accuracy of the machines, which are at the center of a lawsuit against state officials.

Industry stumbles, jobless ranks rise
By Pedro Nicolaci da Costa
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Industrial output fell in January while the number of Americans filing for jobless benefits jumped sharply last week, according to a flurry of reports that raised doubts about the economy’s health.
Massive cutbacks in the auto sector were the primary culprit for the 0.5 percent overall decline in industrial production, the largest one-month drop since September 2005.
A survey of Mid-Atlantic manufacturers suggested things were not getting any better in February, showing activity in the region was essentially at a standstill.
Winter storms were partly to blame for the longer unemployment lines, but even so some economists said the level of claims — the highest since November — was alarming.

One has to ask
1. What industry are they talking about ??
What kind of industry still exists in the mid Atlantic states ?? .. Are the credit card companies going to lay off people ??
2. Will there be a spike in the unemployment numbers followed by a sharp return to the normal 4.,7 percent after 21 months go by ..??
3. Will anyone in the lefty babble business ever address this strange behavior .

U.S. must help Israel defend itself
U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, a Democrat from Illinois who is competing for his party’s presidential nomination, told Haaretz on Thursday that the United States should help protect Israel from its “dangerous” enemies.
“My view is that the United States’ special relationship with Israel obligates us to be helpful to them in the search for credible partners with whom they can make peace, while also supporting Israel in defending itself against enemies sworn to its destruction,” he said.
“Israelis want more than anything to live in peace with their neighbors, but Israel also has real – and very dangerous – enemies,” Obama said.

Air America sale OK’d by bankruptcy judge
A federal bankruptcy judge approved on Friday the sale of the liberal talk radio network Air America Radio for $4.25 million to Stephen L. Green, founder of a New York real estate firm.
The approval of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain essentially transfers all the assets of Piquant LLC, parent company of the New York-based Air America, to a group including new and current investors.
It gives a majority stake to Green Family Media LLC, an entity controlled by Green, and a minority stake to Democracy Allies LLC. That group includes RealNetworks Inc. Chief Executive Robert Glaser and two former Air America board members.
Air America was launched in 2004 and has lost money ever since. Its most prominent personality was the comedian and author Al Franken, who left the network on Wednesday to run for nomination to a U.S. Senate seat from Minnesota.
Green is the founder and chairman of SL Green Realty Corp., a publicly traded real estate investment trust that owns 34 Manhattan office buildings and has a total of 27 million square feet of space under its control. He is also the brother of Mark Green, a longtime New York politician who has appeared frequently as a guest on Air America.

PHOENIX (AP) — A proposed state law would prohibit any instructor in a public school or college from advocating or opposing a political candidate or one side of a social, political or cultural issue that is part of a partisan debate.
A group of Arizona lawmakers concluded Thursday that classrooms should not be forums for schoolteachers and college professors to espouse political opinions.

Documents show new secretive US prison program isolating Muslim, Middle Eastern prisoners
The US Department of Justice has implemented a secretive new prison program segregating “high-security-risk” Muslim and Middle Eastern prisoners and tightly restricting their communications with the outside world in apparent violation of federal law, according to documents obtained by RAW STORY.
Quietly implemented in December, the special “Communications Management Unit” (CMU) at a federal penitentiary in Indiana targeting Muslim and Middle-Eastern inmates was not implemented through the process required by federal law, which stipulates the public be notified of any new changes to prison programs and be given the opportunity to voice objections. Instead, the program appears to have been ordered and implemented by a senior official at the Department of Justice.

House Approves $1.8B Tax Cut Package
The House overwhelmingly approved business tax breaks worth $1.8 billion over 10 years on Friday, a key step toward forging a congressional compromise on increasing the minimum wage
The vote on the tax cuts was 360-45.
Passage of a wage hike for the lowest-paid workers now depends on how quickly the House and Senate work out differences between their tax packages. The Senate tax breaks — worth $8.3 billion — are more than four times bigger than the ones passed in the House.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (news, bio, voting record), D-Mont., said House and Senate negotiators could reconcile differences in the bills within two or three weeks.
“The minimum wage provision is going to trump all of this and is going to drive us to get this thing done pretty quickly,” Baucus said.

The prosecutor whose appointment as an interim United States attorney in Arkansas has ignited a furor in Congress will not be nominated for the job permanently, the Justice Department said on Friday.
The appointment of the prosecutor, J. Timothy Griffin, as the temporary successor to H. E. Cummins III as United States attorney prompted Democrats to complain that Mr. Cummins and several other United States attorneys had been removed for political motives.
The withdrawal of Mr. Griffin as the probable candidate to succeed Mr. Cummins permanently was a setback for the Justice Department, which had sought to portray the dismissals as a routine personnel matter.

Coleman would easily trump Franken (KSTP)
U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman would win easily if he ends up facing comedian Al Franken in Minnesota’s U.S. Senate race in 2008, according to an exclusive 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS/SURVEY USA poll.
The popular comedian announced that he would seek the seat Wednesday on the last episode of his radio show.
The poll shows Coleman getting 57 percent of the vote and Franken getting 35 percent.
…snip…
Franken did not score high among voters in the Twin Cities region, getting only 32 percent of those voters and has only convinced 66 percent of state Democrats to vote for him. Coleman gets all but six percent of the votes among state Republicans, but needs help in the Northeast region of the state, where the poll shows him scoring only 37 percent of the vote.
