Ah, Ash Wednesday. Brings back memories. Back when I was in college (the first couple times), Ash Wednesday was the day we’d dig into our ashtrays, schmear a cross on our foreheads, and then go out in search of Catholic girls. Since I went to SUNY schools, they were a bit of an exotic commodity. Of course, in Buffalo, we could always go over to “The Locker Room,” which was a bar over by Canisius – a Jesuit school – (or make the trek up to Niagara, but Canisius was just a few blocks down Main Street). There were usually one or two rich girls looking to rub daddy’s nose in it. If that didn’t work, there was always Buff State to fall back on.
Anyhow, you’re supposed to give up something for lent. As for me, I think I’ll just plain give up.
Morning / Evening :yinyang:
Don’t give up, pj! 😥

Hey Druid!
Haven’t we all :omg:
King Kong, :yinyang: I was going to call/greet you with a Happy New Year greeting in Chinese/American speak similar to Gung Hey/Hay Fa? Choy/Choi {sounds similar to the previous}SORRY , but I couldn’t confirm the spelling. ; however, know I am saying the wish to you. In SF, Chinese, Japanese, and with many other types of Asian peoples, it is many different Times of the Month of the Year of the Sow {Pig} in many different Asian “Nations…” …

Thanks for the wish. Your wishing me happy new year in Cantonese. In Mandrin (the Chinese we speak) it’s Gong she fot tsai & Shin nien qui la! Four days down south with a local family playing majong and singing KTV was enough. It’s good to be home.

Blair and President Bush talked by secure video link Tuesday morning about the proposals, U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said. Bush views Britain’s troop cutbacks as “a sign of success” in Iraq, he said.
Sure, it’s a sign of success. Now Chimp Boy can kill American soldiers more quickly and efficiently.

IMPEACH THIS ASSHOLE ALREADY!!!
:fire:
So, Kevin, if a country takes out troops it’s a success and when one adds troops it’s a WHAT? :reaper:
Thank You King Kong, I can hardly wait until next year and if possibly even this year. 😉
Wonderful. I like wishing others Happy New Year. So SF general language is Cantonese, but I know there is so many different dialects there.

and, Druid, what still blows my mind, each dialect says it different, yet the written language is the same! (Though China has a simplified version)
Kevin M, re 7  , King Kong, re 8

Only 10, 9 … Posts to go. Then PJ and I will trade places a tad bit, back and forth {I hope} or 🙁 I will continue on the path and join others of my kind …

Public workers have no right to union aid when disciplined
Public employees don’t have the same union rights as private sector workers when facing possible disciplinary action, the New York’s highest court ruled Tuesday.
The Court of Appeals said a 1975 U.S. Supreme Court decision giving private sector employees the right to have union assistance during “investigatory interviews” does not apply to public employees in New York because of differences between the National Labor Relations Act and the state law governing public employees, the Taylor Law.
The differences in the laws are “not mere random variations,” Judge Robert Smith wrote for the majority in the 4-2 decision. He noted that subsequent bills in the Legislature show that lawmakers did not believe any such protections existed.
…….
“For the court to say a public employee is not entitled to union representation is really shocking in this day and age,” said William Herbert, a lawyer with the public employee union CSEA. He said his organization may lobby legislators to change the law.
“Certainly in light of this decision, a legislative option is something that is on the table,” he said. “It’s something that needs to be examined carefully.”

Teachers , police and firefighters represent one of the largest unionized blocks.. So will striking employees now be subject to disciplinary action .. ??

Damnit Sue! I have too much to do today to be playing with the Bush Speechwriter!
You really gotta wonder what the deal with the SamSederShow blog comments is. Seems like it ought to have been fixed quite a while ago.
PJ, How are you feeling?
I hope you’ll post your speechwriter handiwork. I’m really looking forward to it. But, as I tell Jenn, do your homework first or it’s bed with no supper.

Good morning, Druid. Happy lurkin’.
Hey Sue. Feeling much better. Not 100% quite yet, but getting there. Very impressed with the power of the oregano, and so happy I didn’t have to submit myself to the witch doctors. Just like when you get a new car, suddenly you see the same car on the road all over the place, so it seems to be with infected lymph nodes. I have a source which tells me there’s been a bit of a rash on them. The voodoo cure seems to be to admit the patient, attempt to drain the thing with a horse needle, load them up with IV antibiotics, and then eventually go in with more invasive surgical procedures to drain them. All of which means you get to spend several days (at least) in the hospital, and sick from all the antibiotocs (which, if you’re lucky, only make you sick, and don’t cause kidney failure or something). Not that that doesn’t sound like fun, but – all-in-all – I think my way was better.
PJ, I don’t know if your way was better or not but I’m certainly glad you’re on the mend.
HP just called to tell me my computer will be repaired on 2/28. They had received it on 1/8. Next time I may try giving the computer oregano. But it will have to take it dry as water does not seem to agree with it.
The Age of Dinosaurs ended millions of years ago but paleontologists are still attempting to get a handle on the immense diversity and diverse immensity of these creatures.
Take the report last month that Spinosaurus is now officially the biggest carnivorous dinosaur known to science. This two-legged beast actually strode onto the fossil scene in 1915 when a specimen was described by German paleontologist Ernst Stromer. He figured this theropod (defined as a two-legged carnivore) was bigger than Tyrannosaurus rex, but the original Spinosaurus bones were destroyed by Allied bombs in 1944. So the T. rex reigned as the king size, carnivorous land beast for decades.
Then along came Giganotosaurus 11 years ago.
Now Cristiano Dal Sasso of the Civil Natural History Museum in Milan says Giganotosaurus has been dethroned based on estimates from a new Spinosaurus skull.

From Daily Kos:
Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) now appears likely to run for re-election next year, as he continues to improve from a stroke that had thrown his political future into doubt.
Johnson had put his re-election plans on hold and halted putting together a campaign team pending his recovery from the brain hemorrhage he suffered on Dec. 13. But with Johnson’s rehabilitation following brain surgery going well, his aides now say they anticipate he will seek another term….
Johnson’s office confirmed that the Senator was released from The George Washington University Hospital on Friday, and transferred to a private rehabilitation facility…. According to a statement from Johnson’s doctor released by Johnson’s office,
the medical condition that caused his stroke has been alleviated.
“Senator Johnson had his final angiogram last week which confirmed that there is no evidence of residual arteriovenous malformation (AVM),” said Dr. Philip Marion, medical director for the Department of Rehabilitative Medicine at George Washington. “The Senator made great progress in the two months he spent at GW Hospital.”
Since the Repigs fillibustered the non-binding resolution, why are people demanding a BINDING resolution, knowing that it cannot possibly pass? I think the Dems are not in a position to pass such legislation. I do think, however, that they are in a great position to hold hearings and investigate and that those activities will help to blunt the Repigs in the end.
I saw only one person in Red Hook with ashes. Used to be many many more.
Evenin’ All! Hi Mom! Happy New Year King Kong…
PJ – I am glad you are on the mend and my apologies for starting the pussy pit rumor. 😳

Tony Blair says Iraq has made “remarkable†progress. Clusters of red on the British Army’s own maps of Basra suggest otherwise.
On military charts, significant swaths of the southern city are security coded scarlet, for unsatisfactory. Other zones are marked green, satisfactory, or amber, between the two.
Levels of violence and anticoalition attacks are far lower in the Shia-dominated south than the Sunni triangle around Baghdad. But British casualties have been increasing over the last year, with more than ten soldiers killed and 60 injured since November.
Iraqis in Basra and across southern Iraq offered a mixed reaction to the British withdrawal. Some welcomed the gradual departure of an occupying military power in a land traditionally hostile to any invader. But there was also widespread trepidation that the diminishing British presence will only cement the already tight grip that fundamentalist Shia militias hold over the south, enforcing their own hardline interpretation of Islamic religious law.
